Duterte’s 8-point economic agenda ‘business as usual’ THE eight-point economic agenda of President-elect Rodrigo Duterte is an elitist neoliberal agenda, research group IBON said. It is good for big business at the expense of the majority of Filipinos and long-term national development. Its “business as usual” belies the clamor for change and, in repeating Aquinoera policies that drove this clamor for change, bodes ill for the incoming administration, added the group. Duterte’s possible head economic manager, Carlos Dominguez III, who has a rich mining background and is reportedly being eyed as the finance secretary, presented the incoming administration’s economic priorities. IBON said that the short list is revealing for what it said and did not say: The agenda presented continues the Aquino-era pro-big business economic thrusts that according to IBON enriched a few while keeping tens of millions of Filipinos poor and dependent on government dole-outs. The agenda affirmed See agenda, page A7

Plant trees for future generations LAWMAKERS are confident that the coming 17th Congress would give priority to the enhancement and protection of the country’s forest cover. “We are all witnesses to nature’s fury. Global warming and climate change are
now a real threat to humanity. We must do our part and act now to counter the problem of biodiversity loss for the sake of the future generations,” the lawmakers stressed. There are various environmental measures under
consideration by the House Committee on Reforestation which, if not passed due to time constraint, are sure to be reintroduced in the early days of the next Congress. Two of these measures are: 1) House Bill 3556 See trees, page A7
DAVAO City--The chair of the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) has congratulated presumptive President-elect Rodrigo Duterte for his “historic victory” during the May 9 Presidential election and vowed to “partner with you and your administration.” Addressing the letter dated May 10 to “His Excellency… President-elect Duterte,” MILF chair Al Haj Murad Ebrahim said Duterte’s winning the electoral contest is “indeed a historic victory because for the first time in the history of this country, a true son of Mindanao in whose veins Moro blood runs is now the 16th President of the Republic of the Philippines.” In his campaign sorties, Duterte, the lone Mindanawon Presidential candidate would tell the crowd his grandmother was a Maranao and he has grandchildren
who are Tausug. He would spend time to talk about Philippine history from the point of view of Mindanao and how the Moro people have been marginalized and minoritized and how important it is to “correct the historical injustice. Duterte visited the MILF in their Camp Darapanan in Sultan Kudarat, Maguindanao noon of February 27. In his rally in Cotabato City that afternoon, Duterte declared that if he wins, “yung isang paa ng Moro ay nasa Malacanang na” (one foot of the Moro is already in Malacanang). Murad’s eight-paragraph letter, e-mailed to Duterte’s chief executive assistant Christopher L awrence “Bong” Go on May 11 and the signed letter handcarried to Davao on May 12 by Duterte’s February emissary to the MILF, said they See partner, page A7
Solon seeks probe on investment scams A LAWMAKER is urging Congress to conduct an investigation, in aid of legislation, on the sudden proliferation of investment scams in the country. Rep. Rodel M. Batocabe (Party-list, Ako Bicol) said thousands of Filipinos have been enticed and fooled into entering these dubious deals, and are seemingly left vulnerable to these scams
that continue to successfully form and prey upon the public despite the numerous laws being implemented by the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). He explained in House Resolution 2256 that instead of preventing the occurrence of such illegal acts, the government merely responds to the resulting situation See scams, page A7
