Caraga small animal raiser gets DA Gawad Saka award for 2015 By RHEA ABAO
Through the 2015 Gawad Saka Search , the Department of Agriculture (DA) honored outstanding achievers in agriculture and fisheries in awarding ceremonies at the Philippine International Convention Center in Pasay City on December 9, 2015. A seafarer turned into a successful farmer, Joel Callano of Sitio Matinaw, Poblacion Tagbina, Surigao del Sur won the 2015 National Gawad Saka Outstanding Small Animal Raiser Search. Aside from the honor, he received a presidential trophy and a P200,000 cash prize. The 2015 Gawad Saka Search is the DA’s annual undertaking in cooperation with local government units, other government institutions, non-government organizations and the private sector. It aims to give due recognition to farmers, fisherfolks and people’s groups whose exemplary contributions to agricul-
tural development serve as inspiration to others and made significant impacts to people’s lives. Callano has been equipped with appropriate technologies which resulted in the improvement of his farming practices focusing on small ruminants. He also engages in Integrated Farming System. This was made possible through interventions of DA-13, Agricultural Training Institute (ATI)-13, in coordination with the Provincial Agriculture Office of Surigao del Sur. Callano’s innovativeness made him not just a farmer but also an agripreneur as he ventured into business. At present, his farm serves as a show window for best practices in animal raising that encourages other farmers to engage in agriculture farm enterprise. The honor and recognition Callano received is a fruit of determination and cooperation with the Tagbina local government through the Municipal Agriculture office.
