Glam up your Instagram: tips and tricks to nail the perfect IG shots July 18-24, 2015
Instagram has got to be one of the mobile apps we can’t live without. Those tiny, filtered squares have become little windows into the lives of our friends and idols, where we can see the latest and most interesting tidbits with one quick (and endless!) scroll. But aside from viewing photos, Instagram has challenged every user to take better photos using only their mobile phones. While filters can sometimes make or break a photo, Carl suggests holding off on “overdoing” it with applying filters—or even go with the #NoFilter trend, even! Snap as many photos as you can—from every angle In mobile photography, quality rules over quantity, but it’s best to have options to choose from. “Snap as many photos as you can,” Carl says, “and don’t worry about the good or bad shots.” As much as possible, explore every angle available—bird’s eye
view, ant’s eye view, side view, front view, back view. A new angle provides fresh perspectives and will surely make your IG photos stand out from the rest! Play with light Great photos are well-lit, or are lit with a clear intention in mind. “Find and play around with different light sources,” Carl shares. Or, if light is of little supply, turn on your phone’s torch light to help bring your subjects to life. Break the rules! Many budding photographers get told to follow the “rule of thirds,” basically an invisible grid on top of your photos that guides you on where to place your subjects. Carl’s suggestion? “While it’s perfectly OK to follow photography rules
and principles, a user should NOT hesitate breaking these rules,” because breaking the rules once in a while actually lets you be more creative with your IG photos. Tell a story The most important ‘trick’ of all. The best camera is the one you carry with you everywhere, but Carl says your photos or videos become even “beautiful when they are captured and shared with stories.” So don’t just point and snap!
