PHL power sector grows by 1,043 MW M

ANIL A -- The power sector has s e en slow but stable growth over the past two years, as the Aquino administration draws near to its end next year. A report released by the National Economic Development Authority (NEDA) showed that the three main islands--Luzon,Visayas and Mindanao, had an added total power capacity of 1,043 megawatts (MWs).
The NEDA, citing Department of Energy (DOE) data, said the Luzon grid has gained 606 MWs from 2014 until the second half of 2015. It is near the required power reserves of the island at 647 MW. Compared to the December 2013 figures, a total installed capacity of 12,919 MW -- the new 606-MW capacity is still promising. The report also stressed that in 2013, Luzon’s de-
pendable capacity only amounts to 11,494 MW, while its available capacity totals 8,822 MW. For the Visayas, the new installed capacity in the island totals 325 MW, adding to the installed capacity of 2,498 MW recorded on December 2013. However, the island had a dependable capacity of 1,984 MW during the same period, while it reached an available capacity of 1,653 MW. Mindanao, on the other
hand, has only gained 112 MW since 2014. It had an installed capacity of 2,125 MW during the end of
2013. Data also showed that for the same period ,the island had a dependable
capacity of 1,753 MW, while it had an available capacity of 1,262 MW. (PNA)
APEC pushes strengthening of agricultural biotechnology to ensure food security By Kris M. Crismundo
ILOILO CITY -- The Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) High Level Policy Dialogue on Agricultural Biotechnology (HLPDAB) Meeting kicked off here on Wednesday with discussions focusing on enhancing cooperation to strengthen agricultural biotechnology. APEC member-economies have considered agricultural biotechnology’s crucial role to improve produc-
tivity and resiliency in agriculture sector to ensure food security in the region. The HLPDAB Meeting, chaired by the Philippines’ Department of Agriculture Undersecretary Segfredo Serrano, aims to develop policy frameworks and strategies to develop and commercialize beneficial biotechnology and their products. “We will discuss not only the
experiences of the APEC economies on agricultural biotechnology but as well as emerging trends, and of particular importance would be regulatory issues as well as harmonization issues,” Serrano said. “We will attempt to harmonize so as not to unduly hamper the trade and development of this technology that can be utilized for agricultural development and improving agricultural productivity,” he added. The two-day HLPDAB Meeting will focus on the following key areas: -fostering the benefits of innovations in plant breeding and science communication; -policy approaches and initiatives, challenges and considerations to managing low-level presence situations; -policy considerations and current practices on co-existence of agricultural production system; and -recent developments and potential applications of animal anima biotechnologies. It was noted that biotechnology will help agricultural products withstand challenges facing the agriculture sector such as climate change, making them more resilient. Food security is crucial in the APEC economies as 70 percent of the hungry population globally are in the Asia Pacific region. Iloilo City is currently hosting the HLPD on Food Security and the Blue Economy which will conclude on Oct. 6. (PNA) ERRATUM
