SENATOR Cynthia A. Villar said training on sweet corn production will boost the income of our farmers and will further develop the agriculture sector and pave the way for inclusive growth. In her remarks during the opening of the training held at Villar SIPAG Farm in Las Piñas City, Villar said she would like to personally bridge the gap that would enable Filipino farmers and agri-related industry players to be more competitive and successful. She said the gap involves the lack of technical expertise and knowhow in mechanization which are being provided in the training given for free by Villar SIPAG. As chair of the Senate Agriculture and Food committee, Villar assured to provide continuous training and education to farmers, fisherfolks and their families as well as residents of agricultural communities all over the country.

DAVAO City -- Homegrown businesses expect more investors to start considering Davao City following the as-yet unofficial victory of Mayor Rodrigo R. Duterte in this year’s presidential election. At the same time they expressed confidence his administration will deliver continued economic growth nationwide. “Of course we believe more investors will take note of the city as an area of opportunities, but with his leadership, we believe the entire country will benefit from it,” said Eric D. dela Costa, vice-president of Alsons Business/PAGE 11

COTABATO City -- The Department of Agriculture and Fisheries in the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (DAF-ARMM) is set to distribute farm aid inputs to farmers badly hit by the severe drought during the last quarter. DAF-ARMM Secretary Alexander Alonto Jr. said there is an urgent response needed for the farmers to immediately cope with the rainy season now being felt all over the region, coming from the almost six

months of crop failure due to the impact of the long dry spell brought about by the El Niño phenomenon. “Our office is now validating from the ground who are those farmers to be assisted and they are preparing the farm seeds and other inputs for the immediate response,” Alonto said. DAF-ARMM is celebrating its 25th year of service after it was devolved to the autonomous regional government in 1991 by virtue of Executive Order No. 460 signed by farmers/PAGE 11

DAVAO City -- The incoming administration of President Rodrigo R. Duterte should put up more economic zones in the rural areas to spur growth and create economic activities in the countryside. Speaking to reporters during “Wednesdays at Habi at Kape” in Abreeza Mall, Abdullah Zawawi Tahir,

Malaysia’s consul general in Mindanao, said that the eco-zones are necessary to attract investors because these provide the infrastructure that they would need for their operations. When investors locate in a rural area, he said they will generate employment and provide the locals with

income but “most of the eco-zones are in Manila,” so all products from all over the country will have to be delivered there. “It should be here. We have ports in Panabo and Davao cities,” Tahir said. He explained that people who would land jobs here no longer have to go to the Philippine capital or even envoy/PAGE 11
