Briefly No rice shortage MALAYBALAY City -- The National Food Authorit y (NFA) here assured the public that there is ample supply of commercial rice and affordable government rice in all public markets, while dispelling fears that there is rice shortage due to the effects of lean season. NFA Bukidnon Manager Victoria Real-Duray said there is price increase in commercial rice during the months of July, August, and September because this is planting season, and traditionally, rice traders take advantage of this lean harvest time of the year to rake in more profit. She suggested that local residents should patronize government rice sold at only P27 per kilo in selected public market stalls, instead of buying high-priced commercial rice.
Inclusive growth THE National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA) said the government is stepping up its efforts to remove constraints to inclusive development by allocating P399 billion for public infrastructure projects in 2014. Socioeconomic Planning Secretary Arsenio M. Balisacan noted that this amount is 35-percent more than the P295 billion appropriated this year for infrastructure development. “ The dramatic surge in infrastructure spending next year will lower the cost of transporting goods and people, support agricultural productivity, reduce risks from disasters, and generate economic investments and employment. The proposed projects will ultimately benefit the poor and vulnerable sectors,” said Balisacan.

PRIME industry that contributes the biggest chunk of export earnings for northern Mindanao, would be at a sorry state 10 years from now if no measures will be instituted for its sustainability. The Philippine Coconut Authority (PCA) sounded the alarm over what it calls “government’s continued inaction” to address the concerns of the coconut
industry where a seeming decline of production is now felt in some areas. Luis Cruz, PCA regional ma nager of nor t hern Mindanao, said that despite
current favorable outlook of coconut and its by-products due to high demand, there is no guarantee that the industry will continue to be an export earner. “Export is good, but the supply base is getting weaker and weaker.” Cruz said At present the coconut industr y contributes 70 percent of the total export earnings of the region. export/PAGE 11
