INSTITUTE OF MANAGEMENT STUDIES

Campus design

Institutions play a vital role in education by providing specific learning environments. A well designed campus facilitates effective institution functioning and unique student experiences. Campus development involves anticipating and implementing changes to meet evolving academic, enrollment, and global dynamics.

Design objectives for campus design include establishing an understanding of management studies, creating an identity through architecture, and ensuring inclusivity and functionality for all users.

Site Location : Madhavaram , Padianallur

Total Site Area : 26 Acres (105218 sq m)

Total Built up Area : 48025 sq m

MASTER PLAN

Drawing inspiration from B.V. Doshi’s iconic design of the Indian Institute of Management,Bangalore (IIMB) and the principles outlined in Christopher Alexander’s seminal work, “A Pattern Language,” the campus has been designed to create a harmonious blend of functionality, aesthetics, and human-centric design.

Just as Doshi’s architectural masterpiece at IIMB seamlessly integrates with its natural surroundings, this campus design aims to create a symbiotic relationship between built structures and the environment. Following the principles outlined in “A Pattern Language,” the design prioritizes creating spaces that facilitate meaningful human interaction, learning, and community engagement.

The arrangement of the hostel block separates it from the academic precinct, creating distinct zones delineated by open informal gathering spaces and play courts students to unwind and engage in recreational activities.

Within the hostel block, the rooms are organized around several courtyards. This intentional arrangement disrupts the traditional linear design, offering residents access to open spaces and views of lush green from the majority of rooms. Courtyars help prioritizing natural light, ventilation, and connectivity with nature, fostering a more pleasant and comfortable living environment for students.

Site Location : Valasaravakkam , Chennai

Site dimensions : 10.36m X 48.77m

The site is elongated, with its orientation facing north and south, thereby exposing its longer sides to the sun’s heat from the east and west.

With this in mind, the design was carefully crafted to seamlessly blend landscape features into the interior spaces while ensuring that direct sunlight is deflected from the living and dining areas, which are predominantly utilized during the mornings. Sit-out spaces and balconies have been incorporated on both the northern and southern sides of the house, offering residents comfortable outdoor areas to enjoy at various times of the day.
