ell, I know I always say it, but this month's cover has to be one of, if not, MY FAVORITE. I feel like a coach or a teacher that shouldn't have favorites, yet I still do. I love everything about this. I love that it reminds you of football season. I love that it reminds you of your alma mater. I love that you see six exceptional students representing East Texas so well at four amazing universities. I love that you can see color, sights, and the sounds of each university when you look at this photo. While I'm waiting for summer to arrive, I feel like the Target lady waiting to get in the doors on the day of Black Friday. Then with the departure of summer, I feel like a mother grabbing at their child's ankles when it is time for them to leave the coop. I mourn for a day, or maybe a couple of days. Okay, maybe a good week. Then, and THEN it's football season and FALL! That breath of something exciting and new makes all things good again. Kinda like those college days gone by. For those who do not know and it's not obvious enough, I proudly attended Texas A&M (WHOOP!). But, for all of you Bevo fans out there, I did not always bleed maroon. Growing up in Austin, I proudly put in my time. I wore plenty of burnt orange, and I have plenty of pictures of me "hooking 'em." I could probably recite the chants from all the football games, basketball games and volleyball games I attended growing up. That, of course, was before I knew better. (insert laughter!) Regardless of maroon, orange, black, yellow--we are all precious in His sight. (Amen!) I love that we can laugh, eat, cheer, and banter with friends over school rivalries. But, in the end, it's the little things like college football that make life a little more enjoyable. Here is to another great football season for you and your kids. Making fun memories for you die hard fans snuggled up in a stadium blanket and a toboggan. Hopefully, you will at some point partake in the delicious cheese nachos, hot dogs, or cotton candy while in a stadium near you this season. But most of all, I am praying blessings for an awesome year to all of the student athletes (especially those 6 handsome and beautiful ones gracing our cover) and students knee deep in books and exams! Gig 'Em! STEPHANIE OLIVER

Eco Friendly

Home

D

r. Rima Kittley and her husband Wayne are currently building their dream home. Unlike other dream homes, part of their dream is living in an eco-friendly, organic structure. This home has been a long time in the making, spending a lot of time researching products and materials. The home is very efficient yet not sealed up because the walls were meant to breathe. Some unique aspects of the home are use of magnesium oxide board for sheeting instead of plywood and sheet rock and use of rock wool insulation. Magnesium oxide board will not support mold growth. The cement slab

does not have plastic underneath to collect mold. Instead, it is poured on a sand base. The roof is metal instead of toxic shingles. The floors are porcelain tile throughout and the inside walls are coated with a special nontoxic painted stucco. The cabinets are all made of real wood, no formaldehyde-laced plywood allowed, with Tite Bond used as its only glue. The indoor air is kept clean with an environmental control system including dehumidifiers and HEPA filters. There is even a whole house water filtration system. The home is almost completed, and the Kittley family will soon be able to settle in and enjoy all their hard work.

DESIGN TIPS

Feng Shui

Anyone? Sabrina Lumpkin is the creator and owner of Bellissima Home, www.bellissimahome.com, an online shopping experience offering hand selected, premium, designer inspired items for the home. Luxury you can afford!

F

eng shui? Sounds like a new type of sushi roll, but most of us have heard the term Feng Shui at one time or another. So, just what is feng shui? It's a simple question that can be quite complex to answer.

Feng shui is a complex body of knowledge that reveals how to balance the energy of any space to assure health and good fortune for the people inhabiting it. This Chinese art of placement theorizes that creating a balance between one's inner space and outer space can enhance success in life on many levels. Feng means wind. Shui means water. In Chinese culture, wind and water are associated with good health. Good feng shui came to mean good fortune while bad feng shui came to mean bad luck or misfortune. Ancient culture believed the specific land's energy could make or break a kingdom. The theories of yin and yang, as well as the feng shui elements, are a beginning basic belief for this principle. Feng shui is widely utilized in homes and offices throughout the world. Detailed studies of feng shui can take years of study, but some levels can be easily applied and easy to understand. A few beginner, basic steps for bringing good feng shui into a space are as follows.

18 • THE JOURNEY • SEPT2014

by Sabrina Lumpkin, owner of Bellissima Home

• Clear the Clutter • This step is essential and cannot be skipped. Rid yourself of everything you are not extremely fond of in the space. It can be a time consuming task but can be very therapeutic. Ask yourself, "Do I love it? Is it useful to me now?" In the study of feng shui, the answer to at least one of these questions should be 'yes' in order to hold on to this object.

• Great Quality Light and Air • Allow natural light and air into the space. Open windows often and bring in air purifiers and air purifying plants.

• Fix What's Broken • Your space is actually a mirror of you. Think about people whose homes, whether in disarray or order, definitely fit the life they live. Repair all the broken handles, faucets, moldings, etc. around your home or office. Making these repairs and replacing broken items can completely enhance the good energy in an environment.

• Assume a Free Flow • Good chi (energy) in the home or office is about bringing nature's f low indoors. Clear the space of obstacles and remove furniture or accessories in the home or office pathway. It is believed in feng shui that the obstacles in a space could very well block the path to receiving joy and abundance on a personal level. Everyone loves a smooth, free f lowing path.

• Don't Sit or Lie in Vulnerable Positions • Place chairs, beds and other seated furniture so that the views of doorways are clear from the seated or lying position. In the study of feng shui, this practice allows you to rest easy and devote your full energy to the task at hand, whatever it might be.

• Claim the Space • Make sure a house number is clearly visible. Again, in the study of feng shui, if people cannot find you easily, and fairly effortlessly, you might be aligning yourself to miss out on opportunities and abundance.

• Make the Entryway Inviting • Guests should feel intrigued and warm as they enter the home. Design an entryway that welcomes good energy. Such things as a mirror ref lecting beautiful light can really warm up a space.

• Keep the Toilet Lid Closed • There is nothing inviting about an open toilet. From the feng shui perspective, no good energy comes from an open toilet. Think about the way you feel different when walking into a restroom with the toilet lid down versus up.

Again, these are just a few tips to explore. Feng shui has so many facets when studied deeply and can involve zodiac signs, elements, colors and so much more. Feng shui is very much like Chinese medicine..... the more you learn, the more there is to explore. Ultimately, all good energy starts with those who are inhabiting the space! Blessings, Sabrina tjmag.com • 19

Reels

Clock

able reels have become our latest reclaimed wood obsession, which means that we have to find as many ways to use them as possible! A big shout out to our sweet friend’s brother that has met up with Jeff (Tiffani’s husband) on more than one occasion to supply us with these great reels! As well as a huge thank you to Jeff for doing the hard labor for us on these projects!

SUPPLIES: • 30 inch diameter cable reel • socket wrench x 2 • white chalk paint & brush • fine sandpaper • black chalk board paint & sponge brush • number stencils • 30 inch diameter clock kit • small paint can lid • drill & screws • heavy duty hanging hardware

DIRECTIONS: 1. Using your socket wrenches unscrew the bolts and take apart your reel. 2. Sometimes the cable reels have symbols painted on the top. If your does, then you may want to sand it off some so it doesn’t show through your white paint. 3. Now just slop your white paint over your reel. If you don’t cover it all the way, then you don’t have to sand it get the distressed look!! 4. Once your white paint is dry, lay out your stencils and trace your numbers then paint them with your black chalk board paint. 5. After your numbers dry, use a f ine sandpaper and lightly sand over the numbers to distress them. 6. Attach the hanging hardware to the back of your reel. 7. Now use your drill to put a hole in the center of your paint lid for the clock kit to fit through and then attach your paint lid to the reel with screws. 8. Follow the directions that came with your clock kit to attach it to your reel. Now hang your clock on the wall and admire your work!

Patio

Table

DIRECTIONS: 1. Grab a helper, unless you have really long arms, and use your socket wrenches to remove the bolts and take apart your reel. 2. Now sand the top and edges of your reel and then wipe off all the dust with a damp rag. 3. Apply your dark walnut stain with a rag. While your top is drying, spray paint your metal base if needed.

SUPPLIES: • • • • • • • •

57 inch diameter cable reel socket wrenches x 2 metal table base spray paint (optional) sander & coarse sand paper dark walnut stain & rag drill & screws exterior urethane & brush

4. Pre-drill holes around the lip of your metal base where you will be attaching it to your table top. 5. Once your stain has dried completely, apply several coats of exterior urethane with a brush to your table top. 6. After your poly has dried, f lip your table top upside down and center your metal base upside down on top of it. Now attach your base to your table top using screws. Flip it over and set your table for a fab patio meal!

SUPPLIES: • 20 inch tall cable reel • socket wrench x 2 • drill with paddle bit & screws • grinder • measuring tape • jig saw

• sander & coarse sand paper • chalk paint & brushes • painter’s tape • dark walnut stain & rag • matte finish polyurethane

DIRECTIONS: 1. Using your two socket wrenches, and working with only one nut and bolt at a time, unscrew one nut and remove the bolt. 2. Now using your paddle bit and drill counter, sink the bolt hole on both ends of the reel so that your table top and bottom will be level. The bolts will still be sticking out on one side of the reel, but we will take care of that later!

Kids'

Table

3. Put your bolt back in the hole and using your socket wrenches tighten the nut back on. Now repeat the steps on each nut and bolt. 4. Once all your bolts are back in, grind off the ends of the bolts that are sticking out of the counter sunk holes. 5. Now flip your table upside down (we put the cut bolts on the bottom) to cut your base. Use your tape measure as your guide to draw a circle around the base (we measured out 7 inches from the center hole on ours) and then use your jigsaw to cut your base down to size. *We wanted our table to be a certain height for the chairs we had, so we took apart another cable reel and added an extra base piece. First we set our table on top of another cable reel and traced around the base, then we used our jigsaw to cut it out. Next we took apart the second reel and attached the extra base with screws. 6. Now it’s time to get to sanding! Sand all around the edges along the base where you just cut, then flip your table back up and sand your table top. 7. Wipe down your reel with a damp cloth and get off all the dust. 8. Staining is usually messy when we do it, so we recommend staining your center first! We just did one coat of dark walnut stain applied with a rag. 9. While your stain is drying, use your chalk paint to paint your table top.

PARTY TIP: It’s nice to have a little party decor on your porch to welcome your guests and let them know they are at the right house. The only thing we did to this cable reel to get it party ready was slap some paint on it!

Melissa is a housewife who loves her husband and son, Ben and Ty, more than anything else on earth. In a previous life, she was a CPA. Her passion for serving Jesus took her and Ben to Africa for two years where, among other things, she learned she can never pack too many crafting supplies. If you want to see a happy girl, give Melissa an old piece of furniture and a paintbrush then stand back and watch the magic happen.

10. After your stain is dry enough (ours was when we got done with the top) apply painter’s tape around the bottom of the center of the reel and paint your base. 11. Once your paint is dry, apply several coats of matte finish polyurethane to your table top and you’re done!

Tiffani Brantner is a part-time nurse and student, a constant crafter, party-thrower, "idea-comer-upper", and a richly rewarded wife and mother to Jeff and Cullen. INTERNSHIPS

U-INTERN I-INTERN

H

ello! My name is Claire Brody, and I am a fellow East Texan. I was born and raised in Lufkin, Texas and ventured off to the University of Texas at Austin in 2010 to pursue a degree in Radio Television and Film. After working out a degree plan with the dean of the Communications school, I moved out to Los Angeles three years ago to break into the entertainment industry while simultaneously finishing my degree. I have had the rare opportunity over the past couple of years to intern at companies like Warner Music Group, Paramount Pictures, USA Network, NBC, Warner Brothers, HBO and most recently, Disney and ABC. However, I remember the time when I had no experience and no contacts and was searching high and low for someone to give me a chance to prove that I had what it took to be their best intern ever. That’s why I created my new brand I-intern U-intern as a resource for current interns, former interns and wannabe interns to seek advice, tell stories and share a laugh. I am hosting a new web series, I-intern U-intern, and it will be available at www.iinternuintern. com this October. Here are my TOP 10 pieces of advice for you to be a ROCKSTAR intern!

1. BE PROACTIVE— When you finish your assigned work, walk around the office and introduce yourself to other assistants and executives. Ask them if they need a hand with anything. By being proactive, you’re effortlessly networking and building new relationships.

2. ALWAYS ASK QUESTIONS— If you are confused by a task…always ask! Otherwise, you will do it all wrong not to mention executives really respect people who are confident enough to ask!

3. COMMUNICATION IS KEY— Always, always, always communicate with your supervisor about everything. If you are for some reason going to be late, shoot them an email. If you want to know “why” you are doing a task, ask them! Always communicate!

4. DON’T COMPLAIN— There will be a lot of perks during your internship, but there will also be a lot of boring tasks you will be expected to complete. DON’T EVER COMPLAIN! Every job calls for cruddy stuff, and everyone else has their own cruddy tasks, too!

5. BE ON TIME (Always)— I know everyone says this, but seriously—just don’t be late. It is a reflection of your enthusiasm for the job and it just makes you seem like your time is more important than theirs. Learn to get a thrill out of being the first one in the office, that’s what I do! 28 • THE JOURNEY • SEPT2014

by Claire Brody

6. LISTEN— Listen young grasshopper, and trust me on this. Listening is the single most important thing you can do as an intern.

7. BE A FLY ON THE WALL— While sitting at your awesome, fabulous intern desk, you will overhear tons of conversations between executives. Listen to those conversations and learn from them—but keep it all to yourself (you’re under contract).

8. CONDUCT INFORMATIONAL INTERVIEWS— During your time with the company, reach out to other executives and assistants working in other departments. Ask them if you can conduct an “informational interview” where you will sit down with them for 10-15 minutes and ask them questions about their career and how they got to where they are today. Finish by asking them if there is anyone else they know of that they would recommend you meet with too. Most often, they will give you a list of names!

9. TRIPLE CHECK EVERYTHING— Us millennial kids like to complete tasks as quickly as possible, which is f ine in an internship as long as you triple check EVERYTHING! As your internship goes on, you will be asked to do more and more important tasks, and they can’t afford to have you making mistakes. Always triple check and you will never be at fault!

If you have any questions about interning or how to land an internship, please tweet me at @IinternUintern or comment on our Facebook page. I look forward to hearing from you soon!

10. REMEMBER, IT’S NOT A COMPETITION— Get to know other interns! These guys are your peers. As you rise, they will rise too. It’s also important to have someone that is going to cover your back and help you in an intern crisis. tjmag.com • 29

ALUMNI

what I wish I knew

S

AS A FRESHMAN ummer has officially come and gone. ‘Tis the season of back to school shopping, high school football, and cooler weather, unless you live in Texas where it is still a whopping 128 degrees outside. Ready or not, the new school year is here. Use these helpful tips to make the transition easier.

To all of the college freshman who are currently at Bed Bath & Beyond shopping for matching towels and pillow shams, heed my advice. No one and I mean no one, dresses up for school. Go to the bookstore and find the cutest A&M, SFA, or Texas {bless.} shirt you can find. Buy the shirt at least 2 sizes too big and wear it over some Nike shorts. You will blend right in. Trust me; you will want to blend in. Most likely the map glued to your face as you walk through campus will distinguish you enough. While I have your attention freshman, just know this will quite possibly be the hardest transition of your life. There will be thousands of young, irresponsible boys and girls all in one location. No curfew. No parents. Unlimited social opportunities. Sounds fun, right? As a recent Texas A&M graduate, I believe I am an expert on this topic. Listen up. College is meant to stretch you. It is meant to help you find yourself. If you think you know yourself at the age of 18, I beg to differ. It is more than oversized t-shirts and leggings. It is more than Greek letters across your chest. It is more than getting asked to the first football game by that senior engineer. No advice column will prepare you for the next four…or five…or six years of your life. I hope the following information helps.

1. Buy rain boots and always carry an umbrella. There is no shame in it. Heck, go ahead and get your rain boots monogrammed. That way your suitemate won’t be able to steal them on the first torrential downpour of the year. There is nothing more shameful than walking through campus during a September shower in those designer flats you begged your mother to buy. Take it from the girl who got caught in a tsunami the first week of class. I can remember running from North side all the way to West side. I had no umbrella and no rain boots. My clothes were soaked all the way through. My freshly straightened hair (take the extra sleep, wear a hat) was instantly curly and wet. I waited at the cross walk as tears and rain streamed down my face. A guy (with an umbrella) turned and said, “You must be a freshman.” Here in the south, it will rain. Be prepared. Don’t expect that cute boy to share his umbrella. He won’t.

2. Go to class. This may seem like an obvious thing. I mastered the art of skipping class to sleep and socialize. I once lived by the motto, “Am I going to remember all the nights I stayed in the library studying or the nights I spent at concerts and being adventurous?” This is a terrible motto. Truth is your mother paid me to tell you to go to class. Find a middle ground. Go to class and study hard, but be adventurous. Make dumb decisions. Drive to Austin the night before a test to see your favorite band. Go to your date party instead of studying. Skip a study session just so you stand with the 12th man as those Aggie boys dominate on Kyle Field. There is definitely a happy medium between trying to have a 4.0 and just trying to keep your financial aid. Find the middle ground and have fun!

30 • THE JOURNEY • SEPT2014

by Hannah Smith

3. Know what you believe. You will be tested time and time again. If you do not know what you stand for, you will fall. I can guarantee that you will make mistakes. There will be days where you don’t even recognize the person you have become, but I have good news. We serve a gracious God who accepts us…and all of our junk. He is pretty cool like that. He will be your most valuable friend over the next few years. Spend time with Him daily. Spend more time getting to know Him than that boy in your Business Math class. Whether you are a mother of a child starting kindergarten, a college freshman, a 7th grade girl stressing over your clothes for the first two months of school or a teacher who dresses like it’s fall in 127 degree Texas weather: You rock. Embrace every second of the new school year. Every outfit malfunction, every test, every quiz, or every problem student. It all passes too soon and then before you know it, you will be 4 months post grad longing for just one more night in the library. You will be a high school hero wishing for one more night under the lights. You will be a mother sending your child off to college, just wishing they were 5 years old again. Don’t let this school year pass in the blink of an eye. Work hard, play harder, and find joy in every moment!

WILL CHANCE

O

ne Local East Texan will now call Princeton, New Jersey home. Will Chance, the son of Jeff and Becca Chance, is a 2014 graduate of Luf kin High School. This past month, he began his college career at Princeton University. According to US News and World Report, Princeton University is ranked the number one university in the nation. While still in high school, Chance was undecided on which university he wanted to attend. During the spring of 2013, Chance began visiting campuses around the nation. During his visit to Princeton, a coach noticed his height and size. He asked Will if he ever thought about rowing crew. After Chance and his parents finished laughing, they took note the coach was not. In fact, he was very serious that Will would be excellent at the sport. Living in the Piney Woods, Will never fathomed the thought of rowing crew. However, from that point on he committed to rowing and soon thereafter committed to attend Princeton. He began to work out daily on the only erg rowing machine in Luf kin. With the help of his Princeton coach, he created a workout regime and diet plan that would prepare him for the more serious training that was to come. In the summer of 2014, Chance trained in New Zealand for f ive weeks to prepare for his season rowing at Princeton. The many hours spent working out at the boat house on the cold New Zealand water and being immersed in the sport were invaluable. Chance said, “I’m excited to now be at Princeton working out on a daily basis with my teammates. I’m working hard and looking forward to our f irst regatta in October. I’m hopeful that my efforts will make a meaningful contribution to the team.” Not only is Chance the first LISD graduate to attend Princeton University, but he is also the first to row crew at an Ivy League university. He is majoring in Operations Research and Financial Engineering.

SCHOLARSHIPS

Aggies Giving Back T

he Angelina County A&M Club is an organization that consists of over 500 Aggie alumni. The sole purpose of the group is to raise scholarship money for the graduating seniors in Angelina County that are heading to Aggieland each fall. The most recent tradition has been to award 12 scholarships yearly, as the number “12” represents the 12th Man of the Texas A&M spirit. Many of the scholarship applicants are in the top ranks of their class with an amazing amount of extracurricular activities. The organization reviews grades, ACT/ SAT scores, class rank, extracurricular activities, letters of recommendation, and personal essays. Every year, the organization swells with pride as they review the seniors that have been accepted to Texas A&M from Angelina County. With so many qualified applicants, choosing the recipients has always proven to be a diff icult task. This year was especially challenging as the organization received a record setting number of applicants who exhibited stellar qualifications.

After discussing ways to break ties and further evaluate qualifications, one former Aggie from Luf kin said, “Wouldn’t it be great if we could give ALL of these students a scholarship?” The organization loved the idea, but knew there was no way to do that with the funds available. According to Linda Burton, “We had enough for 12 strong scholarships, but there was no way we could award every applicant.” Soon after Linda made that comment, she was holding a check from an anonymous donor for an amount that not only doubled the amount for the top 12 winners, but allowed for all other applicants to receive a scholarship. According to Linda, “This was the most exciting gift for this club to receive since I have been part of this organization over the past 10 years, and I could not wait to inform all 40 students that they had received scholarships.” Everyone who applied with all blanks f illed in, all letters of recommendation and essays completed, and all other documents received by the club was able to receive a scholarship. They set a new record for the most scholarships given by the club in one school year. Angelina County A&M club is proud of the local graduates who began their college career at A&M this fall and can’t wait to see what is in store for each one.

SOMETHING ABUNDANT

I

At{one}ment

t was her favorite time of day, when sun kisses the curve of horizon. People moved with the urgent focus of tasks and to-do’s. Despite their hurried company, she ambled lonely, thinking over the day’s events. All of them repeated the routine of the one before and ran together like one long bore. She wondered if mundane could ever learn to dance like moon rays on gently breaking waves? She sighed deeply as an evening cooled breeze played with her hair and blinked away the haze of such a silly, romantic new-day dream. Hearing her name, she turned. Her attention settled on him. She knew she had never seen him before, but when she heard her name in his mouth, it sounded like...home. Unsure how he knew her, she searched his face for understanding. Unaware but overcome with those eyes. He never took them off of hers. They held her strong, steady, and kind. Every obnoxious noise died, and she heard only her own shallow breaths and pounding heart. Her feet never moved, but her soul began to lift and sway in the knowing. Ladies, can we be real for a minute? We are addicted to romance. We hunger for relationship, emotion, and connections like a middle-aged mom-on-a-diet hungers for chocolate cake (wouldn’t know a thing about that!) Because our God is a relational God; He made women to ref lect that part of His image (Genesis 1:27). In the very beginning, God made a man. When no other animal or created thing was suitable as his match, God made a woman from a piece of the man’s side. God brought Eve to Adam, and he instantly knew she was where he fit. God’s most prized creation is a man and woman pieced together, united as one under a covenant vow, laid bare, and without any shame (Genesis 2:19-25). It may be difficult for our human minds to understand this godly concept, but plainly, a physical oneness between a pure, devoted man and his faithful wife is meant to show us in the physical realm the loving character of the Lord toward his faithful followers and their expression of love in return to Him in the spiritual (1 Corinthians 6:17). We know what happened next, however. A serpent enemy made a sleazy move to ruin God’s design. I can’t help but wonder if Satan targeted Eve in the garden precisely because she was the bride—the prize of her husband and the prophetic symbol of Christ’s love for His Church—making her utmost

42 • THE JOURNEY • SEPT2014

in value to his evil plot. The serpent targets the WOMAN. The newlyweds sin. The Love story needs a hero, a savior, a plan to atone the fall. The greatest Love story began with a perfect wedding in the Eden garden, and it culminates with the wedding of Christ to His Bride on the shores of a glassy sea (Revelation 19:7). But it isn’t just any wedding. It is a Jewish wedding. Our Bridegroom was born a Jew from the line of David and He fulf illed the Jewish law in its entirety, nailing it to the cross. If you have believed upon Him as your Savior, you are His Bride. He obtained you according to the Jewish laws from the days in which He lived. I often teach about the ancient Jewish wedding traditions and how they display Christ’s love for His Church. It is my passion to awaken women (and sometimes even men) to this Love story and their unique role in it through the Word of God. Love is a universal language. Love makes the old feel young again. It gets hearts racing. Pablo Picasso said, and I think most would agree, “Love is the greatest refreshment in life.” The apostle Paul wrote of it like this: “...a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one f lesh.’ This is a profound mystery—but I am talking about Christ and the church (Ephesians 5:31-32).” He was certainly right. This is a profound mystery. Think for a minute. Physical intimacy within a marriage covenant was designed by a holy God. Within the parameters of God’s design, there is nothing like it. It is a shared experience, so intense and euphoric; one cannot compare it to anything else on earth. Can I get an Amen, sister? That is precisely why it is used as a metaphor for our spiritual connection with Christ. It should be beyond anything we can explain or experience in any other way. Earthly marriage was meant to display the love of Christ for His Church with that type of intensity. Oh, how I wish there was time and space to share so much more of this captivating facet of God’s Word. But since there is not, let me leave you with this: In the traditions of the ancient Jewish wedding, the bridegroom built a bridal chamber for his new bride for their f irst nights together as husband and wife. According to the custom, the couple was not afforded any physical contact during their betrothal.

by Angie Nichols

Despite the limitations to their relationship, he needed to gather just the right furnishings and attend to every detail in an attempt to overwhelm his new bride’s every sense with the evidence of his care and knowledge of her. Within the private setting, often years in the making, they made their union complete in the most intimate privilege of the marital experience. At{one}ment. Ladies, we know pleasure is heightened by true relationship. We long to be known, really known down to the depths, and still found to be beautiful, wanted, and loved. No matter your failures, shame, or brokenness, if you are under the cross, Jesus is your atonement. ...we also joy in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom we have now received the atonement.--Rom. 5:11 He has gone to prepare a place for you, a bridal chamber. A sacred space of intimate at{one}ment. I’ve heard it said that intimacy translates to “into you I see.” Dear one, He sees you. He knows you. He can’t take His eyes off of you. He sees you as a pure and holy bride. In Him is the ultimate intimate At{one}ment. “My soul years for you in the night, in the morning my spirit longs for you.” --Isaiah 26:9 “Come, my people, into your secret places, and let your doors be shut...” --Isaiah 26:20

'Tis the Season

O

h, football season. How I loathe you.

How you come rushing in, all “fall friendly,” making us think it’s time for hoodies, cocoa and rainy, cold Sunday afternoons. But you don’t bring the cold weather with you, do you? Oh no! You come when it’s still hot outside, when we must surrender ourselves to 110 degree heat because our nephew plays the tuba in the band and we promised we’d go watch him. You’re like, “Oh hey, come watch this game and try to breathe at the same time.” You’re cruel football, so cruel. And aren’t you quite the mistress? Seducing my husband every Monday evening and Sunday afternoon? I can only hope the man remembers to pay our utilities, because I cannot get him to do anything else for the entire season. (I take that back. He’ll call and place an order at Wing Stop. And once I saw him pick up the cat and move it out of his chair. But yeah, other than that, nothing.) I recently posted this to Facebook and had a lot of likes and comments, almost all from women... I plan on going to the football game tonight. IF. There is no possibility of rain. The temperature is resting comfortably between 68 and 75 degrees. I can feel a slight breeze from the north but not enough that my hair keeps blowing in my face. The humidity level is non-existent. (I want it dry enough that there's a chance my nose will bleed.) There is no sun. At all. No sweating. At all. And we are winning by such a huge number that my husband says, "Why don't we get outta here and go to Marble Slab."

Why did I have to be the one to say it, ladies? Don’t be afraid! There’s nothing wrong with saying, “I love football when it’s the ___ playing. But if I begin to sweat or they run out of nachos, I’m out!” A couple of Friday nights ago, I relented and went to a Luf kin Panther game. Yes, I said “relented.” Stone me, but if it’s between that game and Friday night alone in my house without any kids, this momma’s torn. But I went, because I love my husband and I love Jesus, and The Attorney General swears Jesus is a football fan. (Go LP!) As I sat there melting, I thought about how really irresponsible it is for us to load our kids up on Coke and M&M’s for dinner, but we did. And I thought about how tragic it was that I was eating chili out of a machine that is controlled by a button and an exhausted Band Booster. I thought about how it would be wise to buy an extra Coke (or two) because Remi will spill one, Rocco will drop one on his way up the stairs and it will - in the end - save us a trip. I thought about the poor kid in that Panther costume and how his mom must say, “Not a word from you, mister! Straight to the shower!” the moment he gets home. And then I thought about all the (disappointed) Cowboys Facebook posts I’ll see over the next few months. All the Roll Tide! The Gig ‘Em! The Hook ‘Em! And the Texans posts...that will invade my wall, my home and my life. And I surrender myself to the chili and the cotton candy. The sticky seats and the sweaty kids. I give in to the desire for a hoodie but the need for a bathing suit. And I remind myself that if Connie Briton can do it every Friday night and her hair still look that good, then by George, I can too. Go LP!

Melissa Radke is married to the best looking man in town, whom she affectionately refers to as The Attorney General. They have two children, Remi and Rocco; you have probably seen their picture in the Most Wanted list at your local schools. She loves movie popcorn, telling her friends what to do with their hair and being the center of attention. You can find her anytime at melissa@luf kin.org or Chik-fil-A. You are encouraged to ask for her autograph. In fact, she insists.

WELLNESS

28 DAY DETOX –

I

know that a detox and clean eating challenge really doesn’t sound all that fun. I get it. There are so many more other things in life that need your time and attention. Or is there? How much time do you spend dealing with, suffering from or thinking about any of these symptoms: extra weight, mood swings, skin issues, anxiety, depression or constipation? Changing your eating habits could mean that you don’t have to think about or suffer from those problems anymore. Wanting to change our diet is one thing. Knowing what to do and what to eat can be a problem within itself. That is where this 28 Day Arbonne Challenge comes in. It is a STEP BY STEP and DAY BY DAY eating plan. The very first step in a lifestyle change is getting educated about it. Knowledge is POWER! When people make a choice to get educated on what is fueling their body, and their children’s bodies, and then it is hard NOT to make the right changes. Part of the 28 day detox is about gaining the knowledge to make the right choices for your health. The other part of the detox is getting the right tools in your hand to help make eating healthy part of your everyday lifestyle. It’s not over after 28 days. That is just the launching pad into living healthy! When we don’t take time to learn, we fall into unhealthy habits and thought patterns. For instance, did you know that you can’t “out exercise” a bad diet. I know because I have tried. The truth is that how we look is based on what we eat. In fact, 80% of it is what we eat, 10% is exercise and another 10% is genetics. Good news is that the first step to getting healthier begins right in your kitchen!

Did you know that food is either fuel or poison? Poison, also known as toxins, can wreak havoc on our bodies. Did you know that most people don’t lose weight and then get healthy? The reality is that when you get healthy, you will lose weight. The 28 day detox is not about rapid weight loss, but about having a healthy relationship with food. Did you know acidic foods lead to inflammation? Inflammation can lead to diabetes, heart disease, Alzheimer’s, cancer, wrinkles and most illnesses. Most acidic foods are manmade. Choose foods that make your body more alkaline. Alkaline food is God food, meaning FOOD THAT WAS ONCE LIVING! Now you know! 48 • THE JOURNEY • SEPT2014

CLEAN EATING CHALLENGE What is the Arbonne 28 Day Detox? Americans are overweight but under nourished. The 28 Day Detox Challenge is a program that helps educate, equip and empower people to make healthier choices that lead to an overall healthier lifestyle. It has been said that it takes 21 days to break a habit. This is 28 days so that there is no turning back! It’s as SIMPLE as 1,2,3 (notice I didn’t say easy): 1. EAT CLEAN- Learn what that looks like and get the tools to make it happen. 2. ELIMINATE ADDICTIVE, ALLERGENIC AND ACIDIC FOODS- In other words, balance your body. 3. REPLACE, SUPPLEMENT AND SUPPORT- These tools will insure that your food intake is a nutrient dense diet. Don’t just take the wrong things away. When the right nutrients are added in, the effects of it show up in our skin, our mood, our energy, our sex drive and so much more. What would your life look like in a month if you chose to take control of your health, your energy and your mood by making some simple changes to your food choices? For some, that might be fewer headaches and other aches and pains. Although weight loss is a common side effect if your body has extra pounds, the focus of this plan is to change your relationship with food and take control of your health. In simple term, it’s 28 days of food with no fluff, no empty calories, no GMOs, no artificial sweeteners, and no processed foods. It’s 28 days of adding essential nutrients your body needs. The vegan protein, tea, energy drinks, digestive enzymes and much more are tools that help take some of the guess work out of this transition. There is daily support through a private Facebook group so you can learn and share. Making the switch to an organic, clean eating lifestyle could be a full time job! So this plan offers a way to step into the lifestyle of healthy meals without all the stress. At the completion, you will actually have an organized way to reintroduce the acidic foods and test how they make your body feel. For many, this is the final proof that the plan is amazing, because remembering how bad you felt before is a stark contrast to your pain-free living after 28 days. It is worth it. You are worth it! Please contact your personal Arbonne Independent Consultant for more information. This information is presented solely for general informational purposes so that you may learn more about the subject. Nothing contained in the packet is intended to constitute, nor should it be considered, medical advice or to serve as a substitute for the advice of a physician or other qualified health care provider. POLITICAL SPOTLIGHT

UPDATES

FOR THE AREA TRENT ASHBY,

Medicaid Changes Coming

TEXAS STATE REPRESENTATIVE

Most people in Texas who have Medicaid get their services through managed care. In this system, the member picks a health plan and gets Medicaid services through that health plan’s network of providers. Health plans offer Medicaid members extra services not available through traditional Medicaid. In 2013, the Texas Legislature approved several expansions of Medicaid managed care, including East Texas. STAR+PLUS is a Texas Medicaid managed care program for people who have disabilities or are age 65 or older. People in STAR+PLUS get Medicaid health-care and long-term services and support through a medical plan that they choose. Beginning September 1, if you are on Medicaid, the health plan you pick will provide you with someone who will help make sure you get the services you need. These are the two plans that will service the East Texas area in the STAR+PLUS program. UnitedHealthcare Community Plan can be reached at 1-888-887-9003 or www.uhccommunityplan.com. Superior HealthPlan’s contact information is 1-866-516-4501 or www.superiorhealthplan.com.

Strategic Fiscal Review Not long after creating a committee to scrutinize the effectiveness of economic development incentives, House Speaker Joe Straus has instructed members of the House Appropriations Committee to hold hearings on a pilot process called Strategic Fiscal Review. This new budget writing process will allow me, as a member of the Appropriations Committee, and my colleagues, to put several state agencies under the microscope in order to ensure those folks are using taxpayer dollars in a responsible and prudent manner. The SFR will also enable the committee to have needed conversations about the role of government and the priorities of our great state. Notable state agencies, including the Department of Transportation and the Department of Public Safety, will be among the first to undergo this enhanced review process. The first SFR hearing will be held on September 4.

EPA Regulations Could Thwart Economic Growth A string of victories over several states at the Supreme Court level have given the Environmental Protection Agency an unfounded amount of deference as it relates to new proposed rules that stand to do potential harm to our state’s economic prosperity. Should the proposal be approved, the EPA would require that Texas cut 43 percent of our carbon emissions in the next 18 years-- a measure that many experts believe would deliver a crushing blow to our economy and cause several power plants to shut down operations. Before being official, the new rules must go through a public comment process and continue to survive lawsuits from at least 12 states. The penalty fees for not complying with the potential regulations would likely amount to around $9 million per year, which has some folks calling for the state to create a fund that pays the fee for companies that continue to operate their plants. Others are calling for the state to file a lawsuit if the rules do become official. Either way, this issue has a long ways to go before being settled. I’ll keep you posted.

Lufkin Coca-Cola | Lynne Haney Division 1 {61-100 Employees}

C

onsidered an integral part of the Luf kin community for 109 years, Luf kin Coca-Cola Bottling Company is a founding and proud member of the Luf kin/Angelina County Chamber of Commerce and a host of other local non-profit associations.

With a past of family, multi-generational ownership, Luf kin Coca-Cola’s current owner, Lynne Haney, is only the 4th person to hold the title of President in the company’s storied history. Serving Angelina, Polk and Trinity counties, Luf kin Coke is one of only two bottlers in the state that remains independently owned. Both Lynne and Jim Watkins, general manager, serve in numerous capacities within many local civic and economic development organizations. Luf kin Coke’s support ranges from illuminating east Texas skies on Friday nights with local teams football scoreboards to providing product discounts and donations to many local non-profit fundraising events. Some of these events and organizations include the United Way, Relay for Life, Angelina County Fair, Boys & Girls Club, The Luf kin State Supported Living Center, The Salvation Army, and the list goes on and on.

Texas Metal Casting | Don Smith Division 2 {11-60 Employees}

L

iving and working in a community with a strong manufacturing and foundry industry, Don Smith bought some foundry equipment and began operating a side business. From 1959 to 1968, Don grew his small business of making pattern castings while working full time as an engineer at Luf kin Industries. In 1968, Don decided to go full time. He built a facility, became incorporated and Texas Metal Casting has become well known in the non-ferrous foundry industry. For 55 years, Texas Metal Casting has produced castings from aluminum, bronze and stainless steel. They are leaders in building patterns, manufacturing valves for large petroleum chemical industries in the gulf coast and known for their machine shop services. With 60 employees and many of them employed 20 to 50 years with Texas Metal Casting, Don says Luf kin is a good environment. “We have a great workforce pool of skilled foundry labor and individuals with engineering degrees.” Texas Metal Casting has an edge in the industry. About 15 years ago, they recognized a niche market and have capitalized on it. The need for small volume orders and rapid turnaround is something China can’t fulfill.

with companies like Peterbuilt, Mercury Marine, Emerson, Dupont, Chevron Phillips, Dow, Formosa Plastic along with many other globally known companies. In addition to encouraging employees to contribute to the community through volunteering in athletic organizations and the Boy Scouts of America, Texas Metal casting has for around 40 years produced and donated the Southern Hushpuppy Championship medallions and awards. For many years, they made parts for the Texas State Railroad in Rusk and Palestine and still today donate parts for the sailing ship Elissa that’s harbored in Galveston. The next time you see a decorative aluminum cake pan in the shape of Texas or boot then turn it over. Most likely you will see Texas Metal Casting on the back. Texas Metal Casting sits on 10 acres off FM 1194 outside the west loop. The owner’s integrity and trustworthiness has been a constant for taking care of employees during good and slow times. Doing business while building employee and customer relationships has contributed to a very hands-on type work going from 6 week scheduling down to weekly delivery. Last year the company had a record year with $5 million in gross sales.

Also a little known fact, Texas Metal Casting provides many aluminum castings for Luf kin Industries pumping units. They have worked with and do in large part work tjmag.com • 71

Deep East Texas High School Fishing Series Announces Toledo Bend & Sam Rayburn Tournament Schedule

H

igh school fishing continues to grow throughout East Texas with the announcement of a new high school fishing tournament trail. The Deep East Texas High School Fishing Series started by Broaddus, Hemphill, Center, Zavalla and Douglas high schools is expected to attract teams from East Texas and Western Louisiana and will fish both Toledo Bend and Sam Rayburn lakes. “We have secured dates from both Fin and Feather Lodge and Jackson Hill Marina to host our series,” reported Karen Bennett from Hemphill high school. “The biggest issue that the student anglers reported to us was that there were just not enough tournament dates for kids to fish.” “We also know that their busy schedules would conf lict at times with our schedule,” she added. To solve these issues, the Deep East Series will include 12 qualifying tournaments, 6 on Sam Rayburn and 6 on Toledo Bend. To qualify for the Deep East Championship, the teams will only need to count their best 6 performances. This will allow teams more f lexibility to qualify for the May Championship that will be a two day event held on both Big Sam and Toledo Bend. “By having more tournament dates, we also hope to have smaller, more manageable size tournaments,” commented Randy Morgan, Broaddus Bass Club advisor. The first Deep East tournament is October 11th and will include an on the water skills competition named the “Tommy Martin Challenge” to help hone the anglers’ casting accuracy by developing better casting mechanics. Hall of Fame Bass Fisherman Tommy Martin will be on hand for the inaugural event to talk about the importance of casting and demonstrate techniques that every serious bass fisherman must know. Karen Bennett shares, “We also have some additional events planned, such as a multi-species tournament and family day where the whole family can enjoy a day at the lake and have expert fisherman available to teach everyone about the joys of fishing just for the fun of it” The Deep East trail requires a $25 annual membership fee and the individual tournament entry will be $30 per team. For more information, visit deepeasthighschoolfishing.com or you can call Jackson Hill Marina at 936-872-9266.

FITNESS

HIIT brought to you by

HAAS ATHLETICS

2109 W Frank Ave, Lufkin (936) 238-4023

L

iving a healthy lifestyle has endless benefits. Exercise increases our mood due to an increase in mood enhancing chemicals, it increases our lung capacity, immunity fighting immunoglobins, builds lean muscle (which decreases the risk of osteoporosis), helps lower your heart rates, and I could go on and on. That’s just exercise! When you add in healthy living (diet, activity levels, etc.) you can also lower LDL (bad cholesterol) levels and increase HDL (good cholesterol) levels, lower triglycerides, and cut cancer risk. I will stop there, although I could keep going. So the big question remains. With all the benef its of exercise and healthy living, why do we not take advantage of this opportunity? The answer for the majority of us is TIME! We are already so busy in our everyday lives, with kids, spouses, maintaining our homes, friendships and of course our jobs, that it seems almost impossible to find time to take care of ourselves and take advantage of the benef its of exercise and healthy living. There is now a way to burn more calories, build lean muscle, increase metabolism, and get the benef its of healthy living while spending 30 minutes (or less in some cases) exercising! Because of the high demand lifestyles we live, a new workout style has become extremely popular. HIIT

workouts (or High Intensity Interval Training) have become the most popular workout trend this year. HIIT is a specialized form of interval training that involves short intervals of maximum intensity exercise separated by longer intervals of low to moderate intensity “recovery” sets. The HIIT training effect means you burn calories for hours after the workout, increase aerobic fitness, unleash fast-twitch muscle fibers and grow lean muscle tissue, while burning fat. I know what you are thinking, and you are right… It is intense! It is a challenge. If we want to GROW (in any capacity) we have to challenge ourselves. This doesn’t mean that we have to conquer it on our first try, but if you make it a little further each time and push yourself you will see results and FAST! HIIT workouts have become popular so quickly because they easily fit into our busy lives. Les Mills GRIT Series, which is a version of HIIT training offered at HAAS Athletics Sports Training and Fitness Center, is a 30 minute HIIT workout that is scientifically proven to get you results. We have established that we are all busy, but who doesn’t have 30 minutes to run in, work out hard, and get back to it!! You’re in, out and back on the run. But now you feel good about yourself and you feel accomplished! You are also burning calories as you go through your day. Les Mills GRIT Series (for example) is proven to continue to burn calories for up to 9 HOURS after you finish your workout. You come in, work out for ONLY 30 minutes and burn calories for up to the next 9 hours. This is exactly why it is so popular! You put in the maximum effort for a minimal time frame and enjoy the benefits for hours. HIIT workouts will boost overall cardiovascular fitness, endurance, and fat loss, without losing muscle mass. Why should you try GRIT? It will help you become more athletic, lose fat fast and build lean muscle. At HA AS Athletics Sports Training and Fitness Center, we have incor-

porated a lot of FUN extras into our Les Mills GRIT Series HIIT workouts. In addition to all of the exercise benefits, we have great coaches. Justin Roberson and Jenni Blackledge are energetic, fun, and motivating and really want to help you reach your goals. We also have teams…each class time is a team! These teams compete against each other and against the other teams for all kinds of fun prizes. Each group focuses on the ‘team’ mentality; this builds new friendships and directly mimics our family friendly focus gym environment. If you are looking for a fun, new, and challenging way to increase your physical activity and enjoy the many benefits of healthy living with minimal time out of your busy schedule, give HIIT workouts a try. Of course with any exercise program please check with your doctor first and do your research!! If you would like to try out a class for free, come by HA AS Athletics Sports Training and Fitness Center and sign up for one of our five classes we offer daily Monday through Friday. You can also check out our Facebook page or call us at 936.238.4023. References: Lesmills.com/whyhiit Dean Anderson, Fitness and Behavior Expert
