ach  October,  you  see  the  pink  every  where.  So  many  companies  and  brands  have  come  along  side  the  breast  cancer  movement,  which  is  such  a  great  thing!  What  better  month  to  have  a  breast  cancer  awareness  than  October?  It's  beautiful  weather  with  the  changing  of  the  seasons;  it's  the  time  of  year  before  all  the  hustle  and  bustle  begins.   I  hope,  God  willing,  with  all  the  funding,  awareness,  and  research,  the  cure  will  happen  in  my  lifetime.  Â

E

And  you  know  the  effectiveness  of   the  awareness  when  it  touches  your  kids.  One  day  during  the  summer,  we  had  a  sweet  tea  stand.  The  kids  raised  money  for  American  Cancer  Society.  One  of  the  friends  that  stopped  by  told  the  kids  'thank  you'  for  what  they  are  doing  because  his  mom  is  still  alive  from  her  battle  with  breast  cancer.  Then  of  course,  once  he  left,  they  had  a  lot  of  questions.  The  second  opportunity  was  from  this  crazy  sock  craze  that  is  going  on  with  boys  right  now.  My Â

oldest  wanted  to  get  some  of  the  "pink"  socks.  Of  course,  my  mouth  dropped.  I  knew  something  was  wrong,  because  if  my  boys  have  to  eat  off  a  pink  plate,  drink  out  of  a  pink  cup,  or  use  a  pink  band  aid,  they  would  rather  do  without!!  It  was  because  the  breast  cancer  awareness  socks  were  hitting  the  shelves  and  a  lot  of  football  teams,  as  well  as  other  boys  in  general,  were  wearing  them.  I  bring  up  both  stories  to  say  no  matter  how  big  or  how  small,  awareness  is  awareness.  Those  two  situations  gave  me  the  opportunity  to  talk  to  my  kids  about  cancer  and  explain  how  important  it  is  to  take  care  of  our  bodies.  I  want  them  to  know  how  blessed  we  are  that  there  are  students  and  doctors  who  still  want  to  study  and  research  UMLQKQVM \W Ă…VL K]ZM[ ?PM\PMZ aW] ZIQ[M from  a  sweet  tea  stand  or  put  on  a  Susan  G.   Komen  race  that  raises  millions,  it  is  still  going  JIKS \W \PM [IUM XTIKM \W Ă…VL I K]ZM The  kids  are  blessed  to  still  have  their  MeMe  in  their  lives  who  fought  a  courageous  breast  cancer  battle  many,  many  years  ago,  back  when  technology  and  science  were  not  what  they  are  today.  The  success  numbers  were  not  as  high  as  they  are  today,  but  God  had  a  plan  for  her  and  let  us  enjoy  her  for  many  more  years   beyond  the  cancer.  For  that,  we  are  so  very  grateful!  We  love  you  MeMe!!  4M\ [ KWV\QV]M Ă…OP\QVO \PM Ă…OP\ NWZ ITT WN \PW[M who  have  gone  before  us  and  those  who  will  be  diagnosed  in  the  years  to  come. CRAFTY DECOR

fallTOPIARY

by Melissa & Tiffani

e’ve been crafting together since before crafting was cool. By that, we mean way pre-Pinterest, if you can even imagine a world pre-Pinterest. Our families have received various homemade projects over the years from stacked crosses to anything and everything painted and modge-podged, you name it. We love it! Not only is it sentimental and fun to make, let’s just face it… it’s cheap! A nd we love cheap. So we would like to share one of our many ideas we borrowed from a store front w indow for a fall decoration that is sure to turn some heads and be a centerpiece for you this season.

W

We saw this while waiting for a table one evening. We wandered into a small town shop and found some beautiful topiaries all decked out in fall décor. We were in love. We had never seen anything like it, but when we saw the price we were shocked! How could THAT cost so much? “No thanks,” we said. We can do these ourselves! We proceeded to meticulously dissect this new found treasure and plan out exactly how we could reconstruct this at home, and off we went to the craft store. Supplies: Foam cone, a roll of moss, mini pumpkins, w ired berry sprigs, autumn colored large crystals, hot glue g un. Trace the shape of your cone on the back of your moss roll and cut it out. Wrap it around your cone and attach w ith hot glue. Hot glue pumpkins and crystals on in a random pattern. Melissa is a housewife who loves her husband and son, Ben and Ty, more than anything else on earth. In a previous life, she was a CPA; despite this, she rarely balances her checkbook, can’t add more than three numbers without a calculator, and is quite pleasant to be around. Her passion for serving Jesus took her and Ben to Africa for two years where, among other things, she learned she can never pack too many crafting supplies. T his is probably where she developed her charmingly exasperating need for A LL things to be sanitary...Come to think of it, Africa may also be responsible for Melissa’s reluctance to eat meat. In fact, she would happily be a vegetarian if it weren’t so much work, and, you know, if she liked more vegetables. )ZM LWK\WZ[ [MMQVO IV QVKZMI[M QV \PM V]UJMZ WN KI[M[ WN pediatric cancers in the East Texas a rea? Simply, the answer is no. There has not been a statistical increase in pediatric cancers being diagnosed in the East Texas area. At The Children’s Clinic of Lufkin, we cover a broad area of east Texas and therefore our practice has become the referral clinic for these t ypes of patients. With my training in oncology, I am familiar w ith most of the pediatric oncologists in the Houston and Dallas areas. For that reason, I see a majority of cancer patients in our area and refer as needed to the appropriate cancer specialists. In east Texas, we have the same rate of childhood cancers per year/per capita that is found in other geographic areas. The bottom line is that there is no evidence that east Texas children are at a g reater r isk for developing cancer and, moreover, there has not been an increase in the number of cases of pediatric cancer reported.

How concerned should parents be that their child will be diagnosed with pediatric cancer? How common is it? The vast majority of children will not develop a childhood cancer. Most pediatric cancers are thought to be related to defects in how DNA is processed. Therefore, they are detected earlier in life; as opposed to adult cancers that are often related to high r isk behaviors such as smoking, alcohol abuse, diet, sun exposure, and the like. On I^MZIOM IJW]\ WVM KPQTL W]\ WN _QTT LM^MTWX KIVKMZ QV I OQ^MV aMIZ The possibility of developing childhood cancer is an understandable fear for parents. In our close k nit community, we know a lot of people and our circles of acquaintances are typically large. When a child in our area is diagnosed w ith cancer, most people hear about it. The news travels fast and far. So while it may seem like there are more k nown cases each year leading to the conclusion that there must be more cancer in k ids, in fact, data indicates no such trend. 60 THE JOURNEY OCTOBER/NOVEMBER2013

Thus, overall outcomes remain an area of intense focus because there is still a lot of room to improve.

What should parents look for as possible or suspect symptoms/ complaints f rom their children? W hen should they speak to their doctor about their concerns? <PM UW[\ KWUUWV ÅVLQVO \PI\ ITMZ\[ I XIZMV\ \W [MM \PM LWK\WZ Q[ I T]UX WV WZ IZW]VL \PMQZ KPQTL¼[ VMKS Swollen glands often cause parents concern simply because most people have k nown someone who has had a child diagnosed with cancer and are familiar with the presenting symptom of swollen glands. We pediatricians typically understand what is going through the parents’ minds. In almost all cases, we can safely reassure parents that, “It’s not cancer,” and they let out a huge sigh of relief. However, if it is a rapidly growing, painless lump, parents should see their pediatrician and have the area examined. Another common complaint that propels parents fears is when their child has a persistent headache. Most headaches are caused by stress or migraines. However, persistent, unexplained headaches, particularly ones that wake children up at night and are associated with vomiting or changes in coordination (handwriting becomes messier, an unsteady gait, double vision) should drive a parent to seek a doctor’s advice. Also, persistent or worsening focal headaches, especially in the back of the head must be evaluated promptly. Other potentially worrisome symptoms include unexplained bruising, bleeding, persistent fevers, weight loss as well as a lump or mass in the tummy area or prolonged persistent focal extremity pain.

But as children g row into adults, the r isks for developing cancer from lifestyle choices and behaviors increase. In fact, lifestyle choices play an increasingly important role in the future development of many cancers. Factors such as sun exposure, radiation (i.e. from CT scans), alcohol consumption, smoking, and tobacco use place an individual at g reater r isk of developing cancer later in life. Therefore, adopting a healthy lifestyle in the childhood years can minimize the r isk of developing cancer later in life. L ifelong habits such as sun avoidance, drinking alcohol in moderation, tobacco avoidance, and a commitment to a healthy diet and regular exercise will serve a child well beyond his or her childhood years when the r isk of cancer increases as we age.

After several years of testing within normal limits, Phillip’s PSA number suddenly elevated. Still within normal ranges, doctors were not initially overly concerned. However, Wendy McDaniel, Phillip’s w ife, could not shake a feeling that more testing was necessary. A biopsy revealed a fairly aggressive type of prostate cancer. “We met with our families to share the devastating news of the diagnosis. Then we immediately went to M D A nderson in Houston and met with doctors there. We were given several options, but after many tears and much prayer, Phillip decided to have a radical nerve sparing prostatectomy,” shares Wendy.

Phillip shares that as the son of a Methodist preacher, faith has always been a part of his life. “But until something like cancer happens, you kind of take God for granted. It’s like praying becomes routine. W hen you face something this serious, you spend more time talking straight to God. At t imes a peace would settle over me and I knew everything would be okay. I had many people earnestly praying for me,” he said.

Because of their diligence and persistence, Phillip’s early diagnosis meant he did not have to undergo any chemotherapy or radiation therapy. Thankfully, the nerve sparing technique worked and Phillip did not experience many of the side effects that are possible with such a surgery. To this day, Phillip is cancer free. Mr. McDaniel credits his recovery and sustained health to his faith, his family

Thanks to a great manager and friend, Preston Price, Phillip’s business continued to prosper while he was off work for three weeks after his surgery. McDaniel was able to return to his full duties slowly. Wendy, a business owner herself of Sparkle Boutique in Nacogdoches and Serendipity Boutique in Woodville, relied on her faithful employees to keep things running smoothly as she cared for her husband. “I had no worries knowing I had my best friend, my wife Wendy, by my side,” Phillip shares. “She was always there to comfort and remind me how very blessed we are. Even though I worried about our businesses, Preston always went out of his way to keep things going and allowed Wendy and I to concentrate on healing me.” Cancer taught Phillip that God has a purpose for his life. “All I can do is continue believing and t rusting in God and wait to see how He w ill use me to touch someone else. I want to encourage every man to get a yearly P SA test a nd know h is number. Watch your number and get a biopsy if you are not comfortable w ith t he progress of your number. There are new treatments being d iscovered and used each day. Early detection is the best thing that can happen. Just remember to put your faith in God, trust him and believe He will always see you t hough.”
