Leadership Lines By Emily Parks, President
C
an you believe the 2013-2014 JLL year is coming to an end? It really seems like just yesterday I was typing my first article for Our View as President. So let me ask, have you taken some time to REFLECT this year? Have you taken a good look in the mirror lately? What do you see? Does your REFLECTION look different than it did in September? I am confident in saying that mine does! I am definitely a different person today than I was 9 months ago. I have grown more this year than I have in years…I wish I could say that literally, but I think it is safe to say I will always be vertically challenged. However, there is no threshold for growing in grace, dignity, faith, love, character, strength and knowledge. As I stand in front of the mirror today, I see a woman that has learned so much about herself, has grown stronger mentally (physically…not so much), has a strengthened faith (God and I have had many conversations about JLL), and has an even deeper love for our organization and our community. If we, the Junior League of Lufkin, were to stand in front of a huge mirror, what would the REFLECTION be? * I would see over 40 Camp Get Fit kids that learned the value of eating healthy snacks and exercising. * I would see 2,000 children with new backpacks filled with supplies, some with new haircuts, clean smiles, a dried tear after getting necessary shots, and current vision/hearing reports. * I would see middle school volunteers learning the value of helping others.
* I would see a group of parents eager to gain knowledge on how they can positively impact their children’s lives. * I would see 5,000 kids with “pirate patches” reading eye charts. * I would see about 600 of those kids with shiny, new glasses. * I would see 8th graders learning about careers and the importance of furthering their education. * I would see ladies that poured their heart into Spring Market, Fun Run, and the Big Raffle in order to raise funds for our mission. * I would see many sponsors, in-kind donors, sustainers, and 2014 supporters. * I would see 5 scholarship recipients. * I would see organizations that received over $20,000 in grants. * I would see 11 board members that dedicated their time and energy to conduct the behind-the-scenes business. * I would see a gorgeous group of ladies each with a passion for helping the women and children in our community…ALL STARING BACK AT US!! What an amazingly beautiful REFLECTION! Thank you for believing in me and allowing me to serve beside you this year! Hugs,
Emily Parks

Council Chat By Tonja Childers, Back to School Bonanza, Chair The Junior League of Lufkin, in collaboration with the First United Methodist Church and Buckner Children & Family Services, and in partnership with Angelina Pediatrics, The Children’s Clinic, and other community volunteers, will hold our 4th Annual Back to School Bonanza this summer. Our big event is scheduled for Saturday, August 2, 2014, from 8am-2pm at First United Methodist Church. Buckner Children’s & Family Services will begin screening families starting in the coming weeks and will also be on hand the day of the event to assist with qualifying families who are not prescreened prior to the event. The Junior League of Lufkin and First United Methodist Church will provide 2,000 FREE backpacks filled with school supplies to Angelina County school children (K-12) that qualify. In addition to the backpacks, the children will receive updated immunizations (donated by the Children’s Clinic and Angelina Pediatrics); have a dental screening (provided by local dentists and/or their hygienists); receive a haircut (provided by local stylist and/or the Academy of Hair Design); and receive a hearing screening (provided by Kelly Jobe and the Cole Audiology Lab at SFASU). All children will receive a head lice check and will be given the
chance to have their vision screened, too. We have already seen what a positive impact the Back to School Bonanza has had on our community and we are committed to making it bigger and better year after year! We will be sending 16,000 flyers home with all the school children in Angelina County and we are expecting a fabulous turnout! We still need A LOT of help though. If you (or someone you know) are a hairdresser or have training in dental or vision screening, and would like to help, or make a donation to our clothing drive, please contact one of our B2SB sub-committee chairs below or contact me directly at 936-676-2514 or b2sbjll@gmail.com with any questions you might have regarding the event: Event Co-Chair – Stephanie Gustafson (936-414-1440 or stephbootcamp@gmail.com); Dental – Mandy Camp (903520-8023 or aacamp2004@yahoo.com); Haircuts - Tina Luna (936-465-0086 or tluna@lufkinisd.org); Vision Screening – Michelle Combs (936-465-1425 or michellecombs@hotmail. com); and Hair Check – Frankie Racine (318-426-4779 or frances0718@gmail.com); Immunizations/Hearing – Lora Huerta (936-414-0903 or lhuerta@consolidated.net). Together, we will make a difference in the lives of the children in Angelina County!

Spring Market By Amanda Morales, Chair
Spring Market Wrap Up
O
ur Market with a Mission was a huge success! This event raised over $22,000 that will benefit the women and children of Angelina County through our various projects. This year, we had 45 vendors that had a variety of merchandise to choose from. We received so many compliments from these vendors on how nice and hospitable everyone was. It makes such a difference! Pre-party was outstanding. Brookshire Brothers and Mar Teres provided the food and entertainment by Left Arm Tan. Everyone had a great time! The luncheon was amazing with the food being catered by Mar Teres and the gift bags filled with items from 2-NV. Thank you to our very own Susan Belasco for making this happen! It was such a nice treat for our ladies who attended. We added a couple of events that helped bring in more shoppers. The bunny/chick pictures were a huge hit! Thank you to Jenny Blackledge for taking these fabulous pictures! I want to take this opportunity to thank everyone for their support! I especially want to thank my committee for all of their hard work. They spent many hours planning, preparing, and working the event. Also, a special thanks to Abby Todd and her culinary students. They were a huge help with the luncheon. Finally, this event could not happen without our League members. I am so appreciative of everyone who donated their time, attended the Market or assisted in any other way. I look forward to the 2015 Spring Market and I know Kimberly Graham and her committee will do a wonderful job!

areer Conference was held on Friday, May 9, 2014. Approximately 600 8th grade students attended the conference—and it was another huge success! The one-day event included 40 career-choice speakers and the ever-popular College Road Trip program. College Road Trip is designed to help students understand the value of a dollar and the relationship between educational levels and earning potential—all while having fun. Thank you to all of the committee members and volunteers that helped to make this year’s Career Conference possible!

What was your favorite placement in the League? Why? My favorite placement was Provisional Trainer. There is no comparison to the excitement and enthusiasm of new members! It was fun to share in their excitement.
What was your favorite placement in the League? Why? My favorite placement was B2SB. I was chair of immunizations the first year it began, and it was extremely rewarding to know we were making a real difference in the lives of children.
Please give some advice for new members of the League. I encourage all our members to see the “big picture” and keep the vision of our work as the focus. Always embrace the positive attributes in each other and let the small things go!
Please give some advice for new members of the League. I would advise new members to the league to do 2-3 years of community placements before joining any fundraising committees. This allows you to experience the “work” that JLL is doing and gives deeper meaning to the need for fund raising.
Where will you continue to volunteer? Right now I am spending my time focusing on my 5 year old son and loving every second of it! Please share a favorite or funny memory from your service time. I have so many memories from my League experiences! One of my favorite memories is the reveal of the charity ball theme! My husband dressed as pirate Jack Sparrow at the meeting and it was a blast!
Gina Green What was your favorite placement in the League? Why? Provisional Trainer; I learned so much about each of the Provisionals in a short period of time and was able to see everyone’s talent and their love for helping others. They will always be special to me! Please give some advice for new members of the League. Follow through with your commitments and serve with a loving heart.
Where will you continue to volunteer? I will continue to serve as a board member of Lufkin Community Partners, The Rainbow Room, a member of St. Cyprian’s School Board, as a fill in for Little Lambs Sunday School teacher at St. Cyprian’s Episcopal Church, as secretary of the Outreach Committee at St. Cyprian’s Church, and at both of my children’s schools.
Stephanie Rasmussen What was your favorite placement in the League? Charity Ball and Fun Run. Where will you continue to volunteer? At my children’s school.
Where will you continue to volunteer? I enjoy all of our community projects…so anywhere I am needed when I am available. Please share a favorite or funny memory from your service time. As VP of membership I was in charge of sending birthday cards out to league members. I overheard the tail end of a conversation at a meeting one night and thought I heard a league member say she was pregnant…WELL she wasn’t. Needless to say…I sent her a birthday card and congratulated her on her new little one. (That was really not funny…but embarrassing!) Summer 2014 9

Focus on the Community By J.P. McDonald, Museum Director and Alyson Langston, PR Director
T
he Museum of East Texas was founded in 1976 by the Lufkin Service League (now Junior League of Lufkin), so families, especially children, would have the same cultural enrichment opportunities as those in urban areas. The Museum’s primary mission has always been education through exhibitions of visual arts and humanities. These exhibitions are enhanced by visiting scholars and artists, public programming such as lectures, and family art workshops. Through the generosity of the Junior League of Lufkin, each year 400-500 children receive a set of watercolors and paper to take with them at events such as Celebrate Paint and other Super Saturday workshops. Additionally, our classroom always has watercolors and paper available for weekend and after school visitors. The Museum has long been part of the annual curriculum of the Lufkin Independent School District with a docent guided tour program which serves kindergarten through fifth grade. Higher grade levels from throughout the region, as well as college and university classes participate in the exhibitions and educational opportunities on an annual basis. Curriculumbased education materials are created for teachers and students including pre-tour and post-tour activities. Whenever possible, the tour size is limited to one class to ensure that every student receives individual attention to maximize learning. Seventeen years ago Art Camp was created so children could receive art instruction at the Museum taught by professional art educators/artists. In the first years, 80-100 students attended basic painting, drawing and clay classes. In 2013, almost 500 students attended. Students enrolled in 18 different classes. Each year, through the generosity of the Museum Guild’s annual Festival of Trees, hundreds of scholarships are available to children of need. Additionally, we offer two weeks of “Wee Art” for three year olds and a guardian as well as adult art classes. During the school year, the Museum hosts four Super Saturday events, two in the fall and two in the spring. These two hour long programs are open to the public and free of charge. They offer children of all ages the opportunity to have a hands-on art experience as well as enjoy refreshments and other activities. The Museum is grateful for the continued support of the Junior League of Lufkin. The vision of your members over 40 years ago created and has sustained an institution that has enriched families in Angelina County and beyond. We are always looking for volunteers to assist us as docents for school tours, to help with Art Camp, to serve the Museum Guild and so much more. If you are looking for a volunteer opportunity, we will gladly find a place for you! We look forward to a long continued partnership with the Junior League and thank you for all you do to help us brighten the lives of children and families in East Texas.

The Junior League Prayer We pray that we will never be so blind That our small world is all we ever see, Or so supremely satisfied, That what we are is all we ever want to be. Give us the joy of feeling someone’s need, Make us gracious followers; Make gracious those who lead. And more than all, We pray that through the years we will
Outgoing Board of Directors at May Celebration
Summer 2014 15
Sustainer News By Anita Caraway As I walked outside the last couple of mornings, I am questioning whether or not I am really in Texas or back in Colorado in mid-May. This cool weather has certainly spoiled me as I know that the heat of summer is just around the corner. I am certainly thankful for the fabulous weather and will enjoy it for as long as I can. With this article, we are wrapping up another year with our League and we certainly want to thank you for all of the hard work over the last year. May is certainly a time to celebrate our volunteers. I hope you were all able to attend Spring Market. A special thanks to Mary Jane West who served as our lead volunteer for Spring Market. I know that Sustainers served in all capacities over that weekend and from what I saw, the market was a success. Thank you for your help. The Spring Social was held on May 1st at Crown Colony Country Club. Special thanks to Linda Anderson, Jan Paxson and Barbara Ferguson for planning such a fun party. The weather was perfect around the pool, the Hawaiian clothing was bright and everyone had a great time. May 5th was Scholarship Night at Lufkin High School and our Junior League of Lufkin Sustainer $1000 Scholarship was presented to Kirsten Gomez. Kirsten has been a member of Panther Pride Drill Team where she was a Senior Sergeant and will be attending Texas A&M University in the fall. We wish her much success in the future. The Career Conference was held on May 9th at Lufkin Middle School. The 8th graders not only heard about different careers but also got to experience “real life as a part of College Road Trip. Thanks to all of the Sustainers who were able to help this year. On May 15th, Debra Moore hosted the Emeritus Luncheon for 11 ladies. Ann Watson planned the luncheon and Patti Smithhart and Bobbi Robinson helped that day. What a great way to support those members who helped get us where we are today. As a reminder, you help will be needed with the Back to School Bonanza in August. Jamie Zayler is our point of contact and an email will be sent out during the summer to sign up. If you can help with registration at Buckner Family Place during the summer, please contact Bobbi. Note from Bobbi: Thank you for giving me this opportunity to serve as Sustainer President for two years. In particular, I would like to thank all of the 16 Summer 2014

board that made my job so easy. Please support Patti Smithhart as your new president. She will be great! Please notify me if you have a name of Sustainer that needs a Get Well, Sympathy, or a Cheer card. My email is bjr5950@suddenlink.net. As a final note to wrap up our year, Bobbi Robinson was named Sustainer of the Year. She is certainly a shining example of the word volunteer and we are all very proud of her leadership for the Sustainers this year. Congratulations Bobbi! This year was another example of just how valuable we still are as volunteers in our League. We will continue to let you know about opportunities that will be available over the summer and we look forward to kicking it all off again in September. Hope you have a great summer,
