im Graham and I attended the AJLI Fall Leadership Training in Detroit, Michigan in September. We learned a lot from our training sessions and even more from our networking times with members of leagues across the country. We came back with lots of great ideas that we hope to implement soon! Detroit, despite what you may have heard, is a wonderful destination. We stayed in the largest hotel in North America, right downtown, and just across the river from Canada. We went on a wonderful city tour and learned so much about Detroit. Let me just say, don’t believe all the media hype…it’s a great place and we felt extremely safe! I want to thank the league for allowing us to go on this trip. The education and experience is invaluable. I would definitely recommend any members to look at some AJLI training opportunities.

Fun Run By Tina McDonald & Shanelle Stewart, Chair & Co-Chair
T
he 3rd Annual Sprint into Spring Fun Run will be held March 1, 2014 at Crown Colony Country Club and is shaping up to be the biggest and best run yet! We had almost 200 participants last year despite the 30-degree weather! Hopefully Mother Nature will cooperate a little better this March. We will have medals for all children participating in the Kids Run, and will have lots of activities during the 5K and 10K for the whole family. We hope to attract participants from across the spectrum. Whether you are a serious runner, just run for fun, or have never run a day in your life: This Fun Run is for You! The nice pavement of Crown Colony lends itself to a “PR” (personal record) for everyone. I encourage each of you reading this article to sign up for the Fun Run, download a running app on your phone, and get moving! There are many running apps to choose from: Couch to 5K is one example. So lace up your running shoes, put on your headphones, and get started. Walkers are welcome! All pre-registered participants will receive a T-shirt. Prizes will be awarded to top male and female in each race, as well as top 3 in each age division. M
iddle School Volunteer Program is off to a great start with over 60 kids signed up! Our first event was 32 students help with care packages for soldiers. The event was held at the American Legion Center Saturday, November 16th from 9-11. Zoo Boo, which was a huge success. Many kids were signed up for one shift, but opted to volunteer for more shifts. We are very pleased with the turn out and the enthusiasm that MVP kids have for service. Any active, provisional or sustainer member is welcome to come out and volunteer at any of the MVP events.

Parent Academy By Amber Youngblood, Parent Academy Chair
P
arent Academy is off to a great start. Burley Primary graciously agreed to be our host school for the year. Our first Parent Academy was held October 22nd and attended by the families of only first graders. The purpose of Parent Academy is to host a smaller group of families in a more intimate setting where they feel comfortable asking questions and giving feedback. Our own Mallory Muhlbach, Reading Specialist for Burley Primary, gave a very informative presentation to the families on how to help their child read at home and other tips to help the parents with homework. Also Provisional Christina Montgomery was a great help by being the interpreter for the night. The members of the Parent Academy Committee and additional Provisionals helped make the event a success and run smoothly. As the Chair of Parent Academy, I was proud of the dinner we as a league were able to provide, in an otherwise fast paced era where families rarely sit down, talk, and share a meal. A special thank you to the staff of Burley Primary, Principal Jason Davis, and Counselor Michelle Jay for giving our league the opportunity to bring families together. The next two Parent Academy nights will be held in February and April 2014 with exact dates to follow. Always remember:

Provisionals By Kim Ogden, Provisional President
W
ith the JLL 2013-2014 year in full swing, our provisional class has hit the ground running…. literally! Weighing in at 21 members strong – we are a lean, mean, provisional machine! First up for our class was the Ropes Course at Angelina College – what an experience! Designed in 1998 for the purpose of team building, this course did not disappoint. As our group began trickling in to the staging area that morning, we were met by rainy weather, nervous chitchat, and overly active imaginations of all the day may have in store for us. While some of us had met before, the sheer size of our group promised to make name learning one of the first challenges we would encounter! However, that challenge along with all the others that day were conquered in true provisional style and we left at the end of the day with our first “to do” checked off our lists, smiles on our faces, and a new appreciation for heights and harnesses! Since that first day of wire walking and chicken throwing, our class has had the privilege of being introduced at a JLL meeting, touring the Pregnancy Help Center, the Rainbow Room, and the Women’s Shelter, attending a board meeting, helping with various MVP activities, and working on our Provisional Project. The project (unlike the decision at Ropes Course to dangle 30 feet over a hard landing and sheer death) was easily chosen and voted on by our amazing group. We are proud to say the project we have adopted is helping to feed 30 families during the Thanksgiving holiday. Each member of our provisional class put their own money towards the purchasing of enough food to comfortably feed these families and their loved ones - and with two little skills learned through Ropes Course - cooperation and problem solving - the stuffing of all the bags proved to be an easy task to undertake! While we may remain “newbies” to you guys for a while, I can say with certainty that our hearts and our minds are fully invested in JLL and we will continue to tackle our projects and commitments with the same fearlessness and determination that we all showed on our very first day together at the Ropes Course. On that rainy morning in October, we were taught the phrase “challenge by choice” – no one was forced to participate but we were each encouraged to reach beyond our comfort zones to 10 Winter 2013
challenge and conquer our worries and fears. What we may not have understood that day was something much more simple than zip lining and unimaginably high balance beams. By doing nothing more than showing up that morning, we each had already accepted our first true “challenge by choice” and hit it head on. We had accepted our invitation to the League, overcome our initial doubts and fears, challenged ourselves to reach out to women we didn’t know, and trust that we would find our sea legs before the ship sailed. I’m proud to say that we conquered so much more than we may ever know that first day, and we will continue to challenge ourselves as not only provisionals, but as actives in the years to come.

Can you imagine what it feels like to be suddenly abandoned by your mother? Can you imagine what it feels like to be filthy and smell so bad that kids at school won’t sit next to you? Can you imagine what it feels like to itch uncontrollably with lice infestation? Can you imagine what it feels like to be burned with cigarettes because you wet your pants?

ast year there were 1,169 cases of alleged child abuse in Angelina County and of those cases 24 children were placed in foster care. The other children who experienced abuse remained with family members. Children in foster care receive state funding to help with expenses such as clothing and diapers but children who are with their family are not eligible for any assistance. Many times the family member caring for the child is a retired grandmother or working parents with children of their own. Assuming responsibility for a relative can be expensive. Often times they have to buy items such as beds, car seats, clothing, shoes, diapers and school supplies as well as cover the cost of food. In 2007, a non-profit agency called Lufkin Community Partners was formed to raise money to assist families who are working with CPS that are not eligible for state funding. Lufkin Community Partners manages the Rainbow Room, which is located at the CPS office. The Rainbow Room keeps many of these supplies available for the caseworkers to distribute to the children and families in need. Sometimes a family is reported to CPS because they are too poor to provide their children’s basic needs. Lufkin Community Partners is able to help by giving these parents the resources to care for the children. Lufkin Community Partners purchases heaters in the winter, air conditioners in the summer, beds for children who sleep on the floor or on urine soaked mattresses and car seats for parents who cannot afford them. They also distribute hundreds of lice treatment kits each year. In 2012, Lufkin Community Partners provided assistance to 491 children who had cases with CPS. Lufkin Community Partners is able to provide these items because of generous donations of individuals and businesses in our community. “The Junior League of Lufkin grant money was given to buy car seats for children. Many parents or family members with custody can not afford a car seat, so we buy them for any child without one!”

‘Tis the season of giving and we have chosen to give back to our senior community. Please bring an item to be donated to the Angelina County Senior Citizens Center for Bingo prizes. This can be everything from toiletries to fashion accessories such as scarves and gloves, paper goods to home goods, hand sanitizers to lotions. Think about practical items that all seniors need remembering that many of them go without the most basic necessities. We look forward to seeing you as we celebrate the holiday season.

Sustainer News By Anita Caraway Since becoming a Sustainer, I have looked forward to the Fall Luncheon and Business Meeting. It is a time for us to come together for a little fellowship and a time to learn from the Active members what is going on with our League and more importantly how we can help. This year was no exception and we certainly want to thank Ginger Bates and Susan Morgan for coordinating the luncheon and the beautiful decorations. We also want to thank TJ Patterson and the LHS cheerleaders for providing the pink ribbons in memory of Emily Watts. At the meeting Bobbi Robinson presented the Sustainer Community Donation of $500 to Robin Hight who is the director of the Angelina County Senior Citizens Center. The donation has been designated for their Meals on Wheels Program. Some of you may remember that the League used to deliver for Meals on Wheels and there is one route that still uses a volunteer. The Center also has Bingo on Mondays and Thursdays and 42 on Tuesdays and Fridays for seniors. If you are interested in volunteering at the Center, please contact Robin at 634-4179. There are several Sustainers who are currently working actively in the League projects and those members were recognized at the meeting. We do want to send kudos to Kelley Moore (current Sustainer of the Year) and Lisa Griffin who were working Vision Screening and missed the meeting. Vision Screening is about half way over but more volunteers are needed. You can reach Crystal Thomas at 366-7339 if you are trained and would like to be added to the volunteer list. Our next opportunity to get together is the Holiday Tea. Please remember that the date has changed to December 11th from 4-6pm at the Museum of East Texas. We will have an opportunity to meet the Provisionals and once again help the Senior Citizens Center. Sustainers are asked to bring prizes that can be used for Bingo. The prizes do not have to be wrapped. Some ideas for prizes include household items such as dishwashing soap, laundry detergent, toilet paper, paper towels, lotions, etc. We do have a couple of opportunities available to support the League financially. First of all the Helping Hands Annual Campaign is under way. There are several different levels for donating as a Sustainer Partner. If you need additional information on Helping Hands, please contact Melissa Roberts at lissa@citywidedirectories.com. Additionally, there will be a 2014 Campaign which will begin this January. Sustainers, friends and families are encouraged to donate $20.14 for the upcoming year. That amount pays for a backpack and part of another which are distributed at the Back to School Bonanza. This is a great way to support that project if you are unable to attend in August 2014. The Spring Market is being branded as “Market with a Mission” and the dates are March 27th – 29th. The League will have a booth this year called Jaded Gypsy. We are looking for used but excellent condition items such as glassware, housewares, furniture, vintage jewelry, artwork, china, silverware, collectibles and linens. If you have items you would like to donate, you can take them to Dunagan Warehouse, 1507 Webber for storage until Spring Market. You can also contact Mary Jane West at mjww@ consolidated.net if you have any questions. Please mark your calendars for the Annual Fun Run which will be Saturday March 1st. Lisa Haglund will need around 20 Sustainer volunteers to help that morning. The Career Conference has been scheduled for Friday May 9th and we will be hearing from Suzy Jungmann about volunteer opportunities there. Finally, the Back to School Bonanza is set for Saturday August 2nd.

I do want to remind you about the website for the League, juniorleagueoflufkin.org. There is information on all of the League projects and fundraisers including Helping Hands and upcoming dates. There is also a member only section and you can find the sign-in name and password in the front of the new directory. I want to wish all of you a blessed holiday season and I hope to see you all at the Holiday Tea on December 11th.
