Townsville is discovering the next chapter in its evolution. In 2015, Economic Development Queensland established the Townsville City Waterfront Priority Development Area (PDA) in conjunction with Townsville City Council and the Port of Townsville. The Waterfront sought to connect the city centre with the water’s edge of the Ross Creek and cultivate investment in large scale projects that would transform the city’s heart. Five years on, the Waterfront’s vision is being realised in real, tangible infrastructure, sparking a rise in business confidence and economic growth. The Queensland Country Bank Stadium and Stadium Precinct The Townsville City Waterfront PDA called for a new stadium precinct to help reinvigorate the CBD. This enabled Council to lobby for and receive funding at state and federal government level, while laying the foundations for the infrastructure to make this vision a tangible reality. The new Queensland Country Bank Stadium is a multipurpose regional stadium that is already attracting investment to the precinct on which it sits, including a high-end hotel, training field and the Cowboys Community, Training and High Performance Centre.

The Waterfront Promenade The Waterfront Promenade will create a series of footpaths, bikeways and bridges along Ross Creek to link the Ross River to The Strand, Jezzine Barracks and Cape Pallarenda. Combined funding from Townsville City Council and the Queensland Government has enabled this project to become a reality, including: • a combined 627 metres of concrete pathways and mangrove boardwalks • the Reid Park Active Transport bridge • the conversion of Little Fletcher Bridge into a pedestrian bridge • a series of wayfinding signs to direct the community through and around the Waterfront precinct. This development will provide multiple linkages across the creek and enable the community to maximise the entertainment and cultural precincts the Waterfront has to offer. Additional new works in the Townsville City Waterfront PDA The PDA’s adoption has led to an expansion of the Central development on Flinders Street West, which will provide further commercial real estate opportunities. Further projects will focus on the reinvigoration of the eastern end of the PDA, including the new Ferry Terminal and upgrade works to Reef HQ. Along Flinders Street West, the North Rail Yards proposed development plans are progressing, which will unlock the potential of this site and further add to the Waterfront’s appeal.
