Building a terrarium is simple and rewarding.

Here’s a step-by-step guide to get started.

1. Choose Your Container Almost any clear glass vessel will work: jars, bowls, vases, bottles or geometric terrariums. Transparency is key—it lets light reach the plants and allows you to admire the layered design. Clean the container thoroughly to remove any dust or residue.

2. Add a Drainage Layer Since terrariums lack drainage holes, it’s important to prevent waterlogging. Start with a layer of small pebbles, gravel or coarse sand at the bottom—about one inch deep for smaller containers, or more for larger ones. This layer traps excess water away from plant roots.

3. Include Activated Charcoal A thin layer—aim for ¼- to ½-inch—of activated charcoal on top of the drainage layer helps filter water, prevent odors and keeps the environment fresh—especially in closed terrariums. The jury is out on whether or not this is necessary, but it won’t hurt your plants, so err on the side of clean and cautious.

Open terrariums are best for succulents, cacti and air plants that prefer drier conditions. The open design allows airflow and prevents excess humidity.

Remove any dead leaves to prevent decay. Most terrariums thrive in moderate room temperatures and gentle light, mimicking the dappled conditions of a forest floor.

4. Include a Layer of Moss Not just any moss, and definitely not peat moss—you want sphagnum moss for this. It helps regulate moisture and aids drainage. It can also help the soil stay put.

6. Arrange Your Plants Select small plants that will fit comfortably within the container and won’t outgrow it quickly. Before planting, remove excess soil from the roots and trim if necessary. Dig small holes and gently place each plant inside, patting the soil around the base. Aim for an organic, layered look—taller plants at the back, shorter ones in the front.

7. Decorate and Personalize This is where creativity shines. Add decorative elements like moss, stones, figurines, bark or shells to give your terrarium character. A miniature pathway, tiny mushrooms or a small crystal can transform your terrarium into a whimsical landscape.

8. Water and Care Water lightly using a spray bottle or spoon. Closed terrariums need watering only every few weeks or less, while open terrariums may require a bit more frequent care.

Avoid overwatering—roots sitting in soggy soil can quickly rot. Place your terrarium in bright, indirect light, away from harsh direct sun that could overheat the glass.

avoid common pitfalls to make your remodel journey smooth and (mostly) painless A HOME REMODEL IS A CHANCE to start fresh and create a space that fits how you live today. But between the dream and the drywall, plenty can go sideways. The best remodels happen when optimism meets preparation, which means having a solid plan and the right professionals to bring it to life.

Start with layout and livability in mind. It’s tempting to begin with the pretty parts of a remodel project—the tile, the paint, the perfect light fixtures. But a home that looks great and functions poorly will never feel right. Think about how your family moves through the space—where you cook, gather or drop your bags when you walk in. It’s easy to think you’re saving money, but low bids often skip essential details like insurance, realistic timelines or quality materials. A good professional works with you in partnership and protects your vision, your investment and your sanity. Working with contractors who are familiar with local permitting rules will also help avoid delays.

But in New Mexico, where lifestyles (and architecture) range from adobe to ultra-modern, the smartest remodels blend beauty, practicality and staying power.

In Albuquerque, owner and designer Marisa SaavedraGutierrez of Spatial Harmony Interiors says most of her clients plan to stay in their homes but want to do it right in case they ever sell. “Kitchens and primary baths are essential,” she says. “If they’re well-designed, that alone can move a house from for sale to sold much faster.”

Her focus is on universal design—creating spaces that work for everyone, regardless of age or ability.

That might mean widening doorways, eliminating shower curbs or adjusting counter heights. “If you break a leg skiing, you should still be able to get around comfortably,” she says. The same principles apply to kitchens: efficient work triangles, better lighting and timeless surfaces like quartz or granite in place of groutheavy tile.

Real-estate professionals Jessica and Mike Taylor of Realty One in Albuquerque agree that kitchens and baths deliver the most substantial return—but they caution against overdoing it. “Most renovations don’t give you a one hundred percent return,” Jessica Taylor says. “If you’re selling, less is probably better.” Mike Taylor adds, “Stay within the character of the house.

Over-customizing can actually hurt resale.”

National data backs that up. According to the 2024 Cost vs. Value Report from Remodeling magazine and JLC Online, the average homeowner recoups about 96 percent of the cost of a minor kitchen remodel and 74 percent of the cost of a mid-range bath redo. In the Mountain Region—which includes New Mexico— exterior projects outperform nearly everything else: Replacing a garage door returns roughly 174 percent of its cost, and a steel entry door can net 185 percent of its cost at resale. In Santa Fe, a modest kitchen update even topped 100 percent in some cases.

W

hen Lynn and Jackie Johnson signed the papers for their Historic East Side home, they thought the hard part was over. In reality, their real investment had only just begun.

The recently remodeled property seemed perfect—a charming adobe with mountain views in one of Santa Fe’s most coveted neighborhoods. But within months, troubling signs emerged: water stains creeping up the walls, moisture seeping through the adobe.

What followed was a two-year forensic investigation that revealed a sobering truth. “The structural integrity of the adobe that was not redone—it was covered up—was failing drastically,” recalls builder Bill Deuschle of Fabuwallous Solutions. During one inspection, he opened a parapet wall and watched adobe pour out like loose sand. “I had time to grab two five-gallon buckets and put them under it, and it filled them up.”

The diagnosis was grim: The entire south and west elevations needed to be removed down to grade, requiring new footings and foundations. The Santa Fe

Historic Districts Review Board’s (HDRB) assessment confirmed the severity—they were actually willing to let the contributing structure be demolished.

But Deuschle had a different vision. “I woke up one morning and thought, we can take this building apart and put it back together in a way that it will be

structurally sound and it will not cost any more than if we remove the building and start over,” he explains.

The approach offered another critical advantage: The Johnsons wouldn’t lose five feet of ground around the property to setback requirements, and the timeline would actually be shorter than demolition and rebuild.

The original cabinets and countertops from the original renovation were carefully preserved and reinstalled after the south wall was completely removed and rebuilt with new foundations—a process that required meticulous measurements to ensure perfect fit.

The engineers thought he was crazy. But Deuschle presented a budget, and the team moved forward with what would become one of Santa Fe’s most remarkable preservation projects.

The trust required for such an ambitious approach was already there—Deuschle and Jackie had been friends since sixth grade. That connection helped the homeowners navigate the stress of watching their home be torn apart and rebuilt.

The 1921 structure, part of the historic O’Leary family compound, required extraordinary measures. The team 46

held remaining walls together with steel rods while systematically deconstructing the failing sections. Floors came out. Joists—many of which had been covered with dirt and were rotting—were removed.

Yet amid the destruction, there were surprising victories. While hundreds of joists needed replacement under the new flooring, only two vigas required replacing in the adobe walls. The thick walls provided enough bearing that nearly all the historic timber could be salvaged—a detail that delighted the HDRB.

Built with insulated concrete forms, the guest casita achieves authentic adobe proportions with walls thick enough to house a 12-foot-deep basement—earning a Compatible New Construction award for its seamless integration with the 1921 main house.

The 14-inch-thick adobe walls also inspired an innovative solution for the windows. Historic preservation rules prohibited removing the original windows, so Deuschle proposed using them as interior shutters while installing modern, double-paned thermal windows that matched the historic profiles exactly. “Historic loved the idea,” he notes. The result: 21st-century energy efficiency wrapped in authentic period character.

Throughout the process, measurements became critical.

“I’ve never taken so many measurements on a house in my life,” Deuschle admits. The precision paid off— cabinets and countertops were saved and reinstalled, reclaimed century-old oak flooring was refinished, and the exterior was restored to appear untouched.

“The biggest surprise was what an amazing job Billy and his crew did,” Lynn reflects. “Who has ever heard

of tearing off two sides of a house and then putting it back together just like it was before? Only better.”

While preservation guided the main house, the homeowners needed more space. A new casita, built right on the property line, provided a solution.

Constructed with insulated concrete forms, the structure achieved adobe-like wall thickness while allowing for a 12-foot-deep basement—something impossible with traditional adobe construction.

The project earned Fabuwallous two awards from the City of Santa Fe in the same year: a Heritage Preservation Award for the sensitive restoration and a Compatible New Construction award for the casita. “It was the only time in the city I know of that one contractor got two awards in the same year,” Deuschle says.

contemporary fixtures that complement rather than compete with the historic character.

“It’s a fusion, really, of modern-day building techniques and fixtures that are compatible with that period,” Deuschle explains.

Today, the home feels both historic and thoroughly modern. “The interior of the house looks identical today as it did when we bought it,” Lynn confirms—but now with structural integrity that will last generations.

The ambience, Deuschle says, is what makes the project his favorite in 53 years of building. “The energy in the house just embraces you. It really does. It just feels so comfortable and warm.” From the secluded patio with its outdoor fireplace to the upper terrace with mountain views, the home lives like the jewel it is—nestled into the Historic East Side with mature landscaping fed by a reclaimed well.

The Johnsons, who spend a few months a year in Santa Fe, have created exactly what they wanted: a walkable base for exploring galleries, restaurants and the surrounding neighborhood.

“We love the size—livable, attractive, homey,” Lynn says. “We just love being there.”

The project stands as proof that historic preservation and modern living aren’t mutually exclusive. It just takes vision, precision and a builder willing to try something everyone else thinks is impossible.

artful collaboration yields a modern home rooted in place and story

hen life afforded Marc and Ashley the chance to travel for their careers, they collected both memories and meaningful objects along the way. As an environmental economist and a fine art, lifestyle and interior design photographer respectively, the couple explored African savannas, coastal Mexico, the islands of Spain and the deserts of Morocco from their

home base in Washington, D.C. Years later, when a new opportunity to work remotely was presented to them, they didn’t hesitate to pack up and move to the rugged landscape Ashley had loved visiting since her youth: Santa Fe. Their serene luxury home, south of the city in the high-desert hamlet of Lamy, brings together their 20 years of wanderlust under one modern roof. Here, amongst the desert sage and junipers, Ashley teamed up with Santa Fe builder Mark Schwebel of Big Art Building to design and build a forever home for their growing family. Though the endless views commune with the indigenous Sangre de Cristos, the interiors draw inspiration from the raw warmth and textural neutrals of Africa. Its tented safari camps across the continent have been an enduring source of both adventure and peace for the couple.

With homeowner and builder speaking a shared language–both have an arts education background— Schwebel’s 45 years of award-winning designbuild experience, combined with Ashley’s keen eye as a photographer,

culminated in a collaborative process as flawless as its result.

“I wanted a space that felt like a gallery, one that could contain all of these beautiful pieces we’ve been collecting throughout our time together,” Ashley says. Each room unfolds as a rich story told in layers, blending tales from their travels with an appreciation for the work of New Mexico’s artists and artisans. “It’s a neutral but textured blank canvas that allows those things to sing.”

Ashley’s African-inspired canvas spans 4,200 square feet, including three bedrooms, two and a half baths in the main house, plus covered outdoor spaces and a one-bedroom, one-bath casita.

Back in 2020, Marc and Ashley had rented a home in Santa Fe before relocating and toured one of Schwebel’s spec houses.

Its clean lines and focus on the views mirrored the qualities they envisioned for their own build. “We all clicked right away,” Ashley recalls. That early connection grew into a genuine partnership from breaking ground to final touches.

Schwebel valued Ashley’s decisiveness and creativity, while she appreciated his streamlined design aesthetic and his ability to translate her ideas into form.

“The house has all the trademarks of what I do,” Schwebel says. “The big glass doors that slide back, the high ceilings, wood ceilings and floors, stone and concrete.” In the absence 60

of color, custom details abound. Kitchen cabinetry crafted in his own cabinet shop, a walk-in pantry hidden within the millwork, and a wet room in the primary bathroom are other hallmarks that reflect his approach: “I look at every house as being a very large piece of art.”

Their skills and artistic sensibilities produced one of his most cohesive homes to date. In this expressive sanctuary, each room enjoys its own subtle identity yet supports the whole, as harmonious as an airy cloudscape. Shifts in flooring and ceiling treatments delineate spaces without breaking the flow, while rustic statement doors Schwebel sourced from Los Angeles echo the Moroccan craftsmanship

the couple hoped to capture. Overhead, beams and planks were painstakingly whitewashed in varying shades until they whispered the right tone. “I kept calling Mark to say the beams needed more whitewashing,” Ashley laughs. “I swear we bought New Mexico out of white paint.”

Schwebel’s design excels in both its indoor-outdoor connection to the land and its sensitivity to its resources.

He over-insulated both structures and tucked the glass deep under portales to conserve energy. For safety, fire sprinklers—mandated by code—disappear into the beams, another detail handled with care.

Step through the front door and the Sangre de Cristos

mesmerize the senses, framed by a wall of glass that slides back to greet them. Equally calming is Ashley’s curation: pale creams and whites, natural fibers and materials, places “to curl up with a book and watch the snowfall.” The expansive living, dining and kitchen areas flow together as one grand yet organic space, grounded by engineered hardwood floors chosen for their beauty and durability.

Latillas above add texture and rhythm, while the void of bright hues and ornamentation lets the eyes soak in the natural beauty of the surroundings.

A timber barn door Schwebel fashioned from latillas doubles as a backdrop for the dining area and leads to the dreamy ambience of the primary suite. Whitewashed beams and a four-poster bed marry with Moroccan textiles in a cocoon of comfort, warmed by the coziness of a gas fireplace. The adjoining spa-like bath introduces microcement walls, pebble-inspired tile flooring and a circular freestanding tub facing the mountains. Steps away, a safari-themed nursery hints at the family’s next chapter, complete with a tent-like canopy above the crib.

A lack of glass enclosures around the overhead shower and the massive five-foot-round soaking tub in the primary bathroom creates a spa-style wet room with mountain views.

“I love building homes with people who are passionate about the creative process,” Schwebel says. “And Ashley and Marc were totally passionate.” Their passion extends not only to their new home but also to what it represents.

“We did not know anyone here before we moved. We’re in our early forties, so we just set out to meet people and we did,” Ashley shares.

“We’ve been very fortunate to have created a really beautiful community.

The way I view wealth is a full dining room table with every seat filled. It’s been wonderful to throw dinner parties and see all those seats filled around the dining room table, and to be able to cook with friends and family around the kitchen island. That’s what a home is meant for: those memories you make with loved ones.”

Maybe it’s the desert light that softens old adobe walls, or the mountain air that still hums with the songs of the past. Across the state, a handful of hotels keep that spirit alive, each with a story etched into its walls, carrying the heartbeat of a different era. Among the most beloved are the Hotel St. Francis in Santa Fe, the Murray Hotel in Silver City and the El Rancho Hotel in Gallup. They’re more than places to stay—they’re time capsules, each preserving a chapter of New Mexico’s colorful history.

In the heart of Santa Fe, where the scent of piñon mingles with roasting chile, stands the Hotel St. Francis, one of the city’s oldest and most graceful hotels. It began as the De Vargas Hotel in the early 1900s but was rebuilt after a 1922 fire. The newly reconstructed hotel was named after the city’s patron saint and designed to embody the spirit of early Franciscan simplicity. Its whitewashed walls and hand-carved furniture tell a story of reverence and restraint.

candlelight, the rough texture of aged wood, the echo of footsteps on stone. But while the atmosphere whispers of the past, the amenities are thoroughly modern.

The hotel’s in-house Secreto Lounge has become a Santa Fe favorite, known for its craft cocktails featuring local ingredients like lavender, sage and green chile. Meanwhile, Wolf and Roadrunner, the hotel’s restaurant, celebrates the region’s culinary heritage with refined New Mexican flavors. Staying here offers more than a comfortable bed—it provides a connection to Santa Fe’s enduring blend of art, faith and hospitality.

Down in Silver City, the Murray Hotel stands as a monument to the golden age of American travel. Built in 1938, this Art Deco landmark once hosted travelers seeking the adventure of the open road and fortune in the nearby mines. The building’s clean lines and geometric accents harken back to a time when modern design was a symbol of progress and optimism.

After decades of dormancy, the Murray was lovingly restored in the early 2000s, reopening as a celebration of Silver City’s resilience and creativity. Today, the lobby glows with chrome details and terrazzo floors that have seen generations

come and go. Local artists often display their work here, bridging the past and present through the town’s signature creative energy.

Silver City itself is a town with grit and soul—a mix of mountain beauty and Old West charm. The Murray fits right in. Guests often find themselves swapping stories over coffee in the lobby or wandering the nearby galleries and cafés. Staying here isn’t about luxury in the traditional sense—it’s about nostalgia, craftsmanship and connection. The walls may have been built for travelers of another era, but they still welcome anyone with an explorer’s heart.

On old Route 66, just outside the red rock horizons of Gallup, the El Rancho Hotel rises like a movie set that never quite wrapped up.

This was once the go-to lodging for Hollywood’s golden-age stars filming Westerns across northern New Mexico.

Names like John Wayne, Katharine Hepburn and Spencer Tracy line the lobby’s grand staircase, their photos hung like family portraits.

Built in 1937 by R.E. Griffith, brother of a Hollywood director, the El Rancho was designed to be both rustic and regal. Its log beams, Navajo rugs and grand stone fireplace give the place a cinematic feel—part lodge, part legend. Guests still check into rooms named after movie stars, some with original furnishings and autographed photos left behind by the icons who once stayed there.

But the El Rancho isn’t just about nostalgia. It’s about endurance.

Through decades of boom and bust, it’s remained a cornerstone of Gallup’s identity—a living museum of Route 66 culture and Native craftsmanship.

The on-site restaurant serves hearty New Mexican fare, while the gift shop carries artisan jewelry and rugs from local Navajo and Zuni artists.

Though spread across the state, Hotel St. Francis, the Murray Hotel and El Rancho Hotel share a rare thread: Each stay invites guests to slow down, to notice the creak of old floorboards and the scent of sage on the wind.

They remind travelers that history isn’t something behind glass—it’s something lived in, slept in and shared over a morning cup of coffee.

Medley blends a delectable menu with cozy, eclectic ambience

NORTHERN NEW MEXICO has a way of pulling people in. That’s the way it was for chefs Colleen and Wilks Medley, who have been living their entrepreneurial culinary dream in Taos since they opened Medley, a wine shop in 2014 and the restaurant next door in 2015.

After Colleen Medley worked in Wolfgang Puck’s kitchen on the West Coast and Wilks Medley worked with the Black Restaurant Group on the East Coast, this ambitious couple decided to escape the big cities in search of a quieter life, where they could enjoy the outdoors and one another. “Colleen worked pastry, I worked savory and our schedules didn’t often match up,” Wilks Medley says. “After working in the industry for fifteen years, we wanted to end up in a place where we could have a better quality of life and a family.”

They purchased the Old Blinking Light building, located north of town in El Prado, and, through sheer determination—and incredible consistency, according to customers—the Medleys have built a righteous culinary destination for locals and tourists. Medley is 70

both a special-occasion restaurant and a neighborhood hangout—with two distinctly different dining areas, as well as an outdoor patio in the summer. The bar does not require reservations, and guests can order off the menu for a more casual dining experience. The dining room requires reservations and features a more formal ambience, complete with banquettes, padded chairs, and earth tones.

Many diners take advantage of the wine store, which features a curated collection of wines using a unique rating system that ranks wines based on their body, ranging from light to full-bodied. The beverage director and sommelier, Molly Steinbach, likes that this approach allows people to choose wines from regions they may have never considered before. “We are opening their eyes and palates to what is possible,” Wilks Medley says. If you buy a bottle of wine to enjoy with your dinner, there is a corkage fee, but this allows customers to “enjoy some really good juice for a fraction of what a restaurant might charge,” he adds.

A decade after opening, the couple still enjoys the freedom of cooking what they love and showing their customers how much they care. The eclectic menu changes seasonally and ranges from cheese and bread plates, which pair well with wine, to creamed green chile chicken enchilada soup—inspired by enchiladas Wilks ate growing up in New Mexico— and gambas al ajillo (garlic shrimp) to a loving nod for his southern roots with shrimp and grits and, for steak lovers, Medley offers a well-marbled 16 oz. cowboy ribeye.

“The three dishes we could never remove from the menu are the tuna tartare tostada and the New Zealand lamb chops—both small plates—and the burger, made with grass-fed beef and pulled pork,” he says.

vegetarians, pescatarians and those who are gluten-free, including a handful of seasonal salads, light and tasty small plates, and heartier mains like vegan black bean and quinoa falafel. Wilks Medley says they are always switching out the fish according to migration seasons and availability.

On a sweet note, Colleen Medley creates unique and approachable desserts. “Colleen likes to leave more to the customers’ imagination, so we don’t put the dessert menu online because it makes it more of a surprise when people arrive,” Wilks Medley says. “We are a medley of everything, and we want to keep it interesting. Every time a customer walks in, I want there to be something on the menu that is not expected.”

And the Medleys have been surprising their customers in the best ways for more than a decade. Whether you are planning a date night, a weekend in Taos, a birthday celebration, a casual but fun night out or want to gather a few couples looking for a memorable dining experience, Medley is calling. A SWIRL OF SMOKE turns a good cocktail into theater. But beyond the drama, smoke genuinely enhances flavor. The same aromatic compounds that deepen whiskey in a charred barrel—phenols, vanillin and guaiacol—also elevate a cocktail. The interplay of sweet, bitter and charred notes can soften alcohol’s bite or highlight sweetness in citrus and vermouth.

There are a few ways to get that campfire magic into your glass. Direct smoking is the easiest and best for a strong aromatic impact. Options include battery-powered, handheld smoking guns that direct smoke from within the gun into the glass or into a glass dome. Other popular kits include a topper with wood chips for firing within the glass.

For a more subtle effect, smoke the glass itself, trapping the scent before you pour in the cocktail. You can also infuse the ingredients before mixing. Firing honey syrup, a citrus-salt rim or even ice cubes creates the same sensory experience as a subtle surprise.

Choosing what to smoke matters. Cherry and applewood lend gentle sweetness, oak and hickory bring boldness and pecan adds nutty richness.

For creativity, toss in herbs like rosemary or thyme, or burn a twist of orange peel over the top for a quick aromatic lift. Match the smoke’s intensity to your base spirit: light smoke for gin or blanco tequila, heavier woods for bourbon, rye or aged rum.

Some cocktails practically beg for smoke. A smoked old-fashioned deepens its bourbon or rum backbone with oak or hickory. A Negroni becomes silkier when finished with smoked cherrywood and a scorched orange peel.

Applewood or hickory smoke enhances the earthy agave base in mezcal and tequila margaritas, balancing fruity brightness.

In the end, smoke changes not only how a cocktail tastes, but how it feels.

Each sip becomes a sensory ritual, equal parts fire, fragrance and flavor.

Smoky Apple Cider Margarita INGREDIENTS Cinnamon sugar and flaky sea salt, for the rim 2 oz. mezcal or silver tequila 1/2 oz. orange liquor 4 oz. apple cider Juice from 1/2 a lime 1–2 teaspoons maple syrup use more or less to your taste Apple slices and cinnamon sticks, for serving DIRECTIONS Run a lime wedge around the rim of a smoked glass and coat in sugar mixture.

Combine the mezcal or tequila (choose mezcal for a greater smoky taste), orange liquor, apple cider, lime juice and maple in a cocktail shaker.

Add ice and shake to combine.

Strain into the prepared glass.

Garnish with apple slices, rosemary and cinnamon sticks. (Light the cinnamon on fire for additional smoky effect.)

Smoked Negroni INGREDIENTS A pinch or two of wood chips An orange Ice 1 oz. gin 1 oz. sweet vermouth 1 oz. Campari DIRECTIONS Use a peeler to peel off a 2 to 3-inch piece of orange zest, avoiding the bitter white pith.

Add ice to glass.

Pour in the gin, vermouth and Campari.

Stir for 20 seconds.

Twist the orange peel over the drink to express the oil.

Add the peel to the drink.

Put a smoker on top of your negroni.

Add a pinch or two of wood chips.

Use the torch to burn and light the chips on fire.

Cover with the top piece of your smoker and let the smoke infuse the cocktail glass for up to 60 seconds.

Remove the top of the smoker and serve.

INSIDE A SPACIOUS, converted Montessori school in Albuquerque, design and fabrication happen under one roof. Here, every cut of felt and cork becomes part of a larger story— one that balances modern architecture, sustainability and the warmth of human touch. Submaterial, a design and fabrication studio known for its modular wall art and acoustic panels, creates functional, sculptural pieces that enhance both home and work environments.

Founded by designer David Hamlin in 2006 in Seattle, the company expanded after Hamlin moved to New Mexico in 2012. Submaterial reflects New Mexico’s bold light and vivid landscape through its use of natural textures and refined geometry. Hamlin has always had an affinity for clean, beautiful architecture, and he ensures that each product is made thoughtfully by hand by his small, talented team.

Hands-on care and creative problemsolving are central to the process. For sizing team lead Olyvia Mathews, that approach is part of what makes Submaterial unique. “Our processes heavily rely on skillful, practiced hands,” she says. “We use machine assistance for accuracy and efficiency, but nothing is done without human-centered efforts.

People can notice and maneuver around the subtle variations in a way machines just can’t detect.”

Mathews describes her work as a mix of geometry and artistry, where precision meets creativity. “I want people to be enchanted by the juxtaposition of the sharp lines that are made with such soft and textured materials,” she says. “It creates this really pleasing visual effect of being both clean and cozy.”

Submaterial’s collections range from wall panels and acoustic art to room dividers and cork accessories. While the company’s work appears in high-end offices and hospitality spaces across the country, much of its appeal lies in residential interiors. Among residential favorites is the Divvy Collection of room divider screens, which bring textured, soft acoustic separation to open-plan spaces. Another standout is the brand’s wall panels, which turn wool felt and cork into sculptural art that doubles as sound-absorbing decor.

Designer Owen Schwab helps steer the studio’s creative process, shaping the look and feel of each new product, starting with a basic hand sketch and, in jest, what he describes as illegible, chaotic notes.

“It then gets more technical inside the design software, some hand modeling and prototyping before the broader product development,” he says. Schwab explains that Submaterial’s distinctiveness comes from a balance between its products feeling architectural and clean, while also soft and welcoming, thanks to the handmade feel and use of natural materials. “We have a lot of agency and the ability to develop fun ideas, fun patterns, fun materials and the space to investigate them,” he says. “We also have a good corporate culture and a great team of people.”

Thanks to Hamlin’s original vision, sustainability is also central to Submaterial’s philosophy. The company sources cork from Portugal through a carbon-neutral process and uses domestically felled woods and full-grain, vegetable-tanned leathers where possible. To minimize emissions, it uses water-based, low-VOC adhesives. The team plans every project carefully to minimize waste, donating leftover pieces to artists and community projects and partnering with recycling firms like TerraCycle to process materials that can’t otherwise be used.

That same sense of responsibility carries through to every design. Whether shaping a serene home office divider or a largescale installation in a corporate lobby, Submaterial’s mission remains the same: to make spaces feel calmer, more intentional and undeniably human.

THE EXTENSIVE PHOTOGRAPHY in Dana Wolter’s “The Elegance and Comfort of Home” is so sumptuous and the designs it captures so luxuriant that any reader can be forgiven for wanting to jump straight into the book’s pages to snuggle right in. In fact, creating such elegant coziness was Wolter’s inspiration for the new book, which grew directly from recovering at home after cancer treatment.

“My home became my refuge, and it was a wonderful reminder of how important my surroundings were for me to heal and rest,” she writes, explaining that afterward, she doubled down on creating spaces that not only pleased the eye but also supported her clients’ long-term peace and well-being.

Visually, this aesthetic translates to using the highest quality and more sensually pleasing materials, from natural white-oak cabinetry or paneling to custom upholstery with plush fabrics and textural nail-head detailing. An expert at balancing light and dark, Wolter presents airy living rooms and kitchens full of natural light for socializing, as well as moody private spaces in the form of boldly painted libraries, dens and bedrooms. And speaking of moody, velvet is one of her secret weapons, sometimes used on a large scale, such as to cover a dining room’s walls entirely in an indulgent shade of gray-blue velvet.

“Interior design is as much about setting the mood as it is about the furnishings that occupy the space,” says Wolter, who aims to allow warmth, light and intimacy to ebb and flow through her homes, just as light ebbs and flows throughout the day.

Granted, many of these homes are extremely high-end, such as a second home on Florida’s Gulf Coast with Bermudan architecture and several interior courtyards with trickling fountains. But none of these projects feel precious; all are instead designed to create comfort and connection—including a connection to nature via the conscious use of wood, stone and organic fabrics.

“Since my cancer diagnosis, I have been even more aware of using these materials and connecting a home to nature….” Wolter writes. “I believe connection with nature is central for well-being. A space that is easy to maintain, more beautiful with wear, and thoughtfully designed—all while being eminently practical—supports a more peaceful way of living.”

Vertical Heights Walls are your playground for pattern. Vertical stacking is a modern favorite—especially when paired with slim, elongated tiles.

This layout draws the eye upward, making small spaces feel taller and more refined.

For a bolder move, change the orientation without changing the tile itself. Basketweave effects, crosshatch layouts, or alternating horizontal and vertical runs add visual interest while keeping the geometry clean. Even a simple stacked grid in an unexpected direction can shift the mood of the room without altering the tile’s shape.

Impact Underfoot Flooring grounds a space, and tile patterns can dramatically shift that tone. A running bond—or traditional brick lay—is a classic choice with enduring appeal.

When used on floors, especially in narrow spaces like powder rooms or hallways, it reads as subtle yet stylish.

Want to add more movement and sophistication? Try a herringbone layout using full rectangular tiles—no cutting required. This staggered zigzag is dynamic and eye-catching, ideal for entryways or kitchens where you want a statement that’s still timeless. A diagonal installation—simply rotating a basic grid 45 degrees—can also visually expand a space, making it a smart trick for smaller rooms or transitional areas.

Backsplash Brilliance A backsplash can be your main stage of creativity. Subway tiles in a stacked vertical pattern feel sleek and modern; in a running bond, they feel classic and familiar. Try alternating vertical and horizontal sections for a woven effect, or use oversized subway tiles for a fresh scale shift. Take the pattern all the way to the ceiling for extra drama.

why plumbing deserves attention during renovations When remodeling, it’s easy to get caught up in the fun parts—tile, fixtures, finishes. But the real hero of a smoothly running home is plumbing. Those hidden pipes quietly deliver water and carry waste, and giving them attention now can prevent headaches, water damage and unnecessary expense later.

Inspect Early Start with a simple check. Look under sinks, behind toilets and around water heaters for damp spots, stains or musty smells. If your water meter moves while all faucets are off, you likely have a hidden leak.

During a remodel, a pressure test is the most reliable way to catch weak joints or small cracks before walls and floors are finished. Even minor leaks left unchecked can increase humidity, encourage mold and waste water—problems you definitely don’t want to enter your newly renovated space.

Upgrade Supply and Drain Lines Slow drains and low water pressure aren’t just annoyances—they’re signals that your plumbing is struggling. Galvanized pipes clog with mineral buildup, and older drain lines may sag or be undersized.

When walls are open, its’ the perfect time to replace old lines with modern PEX, copper or PVC where appropriate and add clean-outs for easier maintenance later. Make sure new materials are compatible with what stays in place. Mixing metals, for instance, can cause corrosion if not properly isolated.

Smooth, properly sloped drains move water efficiently, reduce backups and improve overall system performance. It’s a small detail that makes a noticeable difference in everyday life.

Protect Against Cold and Damage If you live in a cold climate, exposed pipes near exterior walls or crawl spaces are vulnerable. Insulate them and consider adding shut-off valves for each section of your home so a problem in one area doesn’t shut down everything. Noisy pipes? That banging or rattling usually means loose fittings or water hammer. Securing pipes with cushioned straps and installing arrestors protects your system and keeps your home quiet.

Pay Attention to Sewer Lines Older clay or cast-iron sewer lines are prone to cracking or root intrusion. Upgrading to PVC or HDPE ensures proper slope, smooth flow and long-term reliability. Photograph layouts and label shut-off valves for future maintenance. Those small steps save time and reduce stress down the line.

enduring evolution The story of how this tree first pushed its way through the courtyard roof is long lost, but the evidence is unmistakable—it’s been growing this way for generations. The owner of this Santa Fe estate purchased not just a home but this quirky, determined piece of nature, and instead of redirecting it, they let it stay exactly as it chose to be. They embraced the legacy wholeheartedly when remodeling the home, asking Lorn Tryk Architects and Madera Builders to work around the tree so it could continue its upward path untouched.

The result is a walkway that feels almost mythic— architecture shaped around a living presence, sunlight filtering through branches that have become part of the home’s identity.
