H

eralded as the “birthplace” of Nebraska, Bellevue offers a wealth of history to residents and visitors alike. Guided tours will take you to the state’s first bank, oldest church, a historical cemetery and many more sites. Bellevue began as a fur-trading post in 1822 and continued to grow slowly until the population boom hit in the 1940s and 1950s when the Martin Bomber Plant was constructed at Offutt Air Force Base. Offutt did and continues to play an integral role in Bellevue’s development and growth as it was home to the Strategic Air Command and now U.S. Strategic Command. Proud to be on the Lewis and Clark Trail, Bellevue commemorated the anniversary of the exploration with the unveiling of the Lewis and Clark Children’s Interpretive Art Wall in 2004. Standing 8 feet tall and 65 feet wide, the wall art depicts how more than 700 elementary-aged children from Illinois to Washington recounted the travels of Meriweather Lewis and William Clark. The wall, damaged by the flood of 2011, has been restored and moved to a permanent location in another part of Haworth Park. The Missouri River continues to play an integral role in Bellevue’s growth as the city has embarked on a riverfront development adjacent to the 155-acre Haworth Park area. The Bellevue City Council unveiled plans in 2012 for American Heroes Park that include a fishing lake, splash pad, skate park and a community lawn for concerts and other public events. Most recently, Bellevue is adding a $180,000 splash pad to its long list of family-friendly recreation opportunities. It is to be built in 2015 in Hastings Banner Park in northwest Bellevue. The park also offers residents soccer fields, baseball fields and a walking trail. Nationally acclaimed Bellevue University, now the largest private college or university in the state, has continued to expand Suburban Newspapers Inc.

with several major building projects having been completed in the last five years at its main campus. Bellevue also is home to the Eastern Nebraska Veterans Home, a state-of-the-art facility that helps the men and women who have served our country. One of Bellevue’s most unusual attractions is Fontenelle Forest Nature Center. Featuring more than 1,400 acres of woods and wetlands, the forest is crisscrossed with 17 miles of walking trails. At the entrance to the forest, visitors will find the Katherine and Fred Buffett Forest Learning Center year-round exhibits. The Bellevue Medical Center, the city’s first full-service public hospital, opened in 2010, as did the state-of-the-art Champions Village softball complex. As Bellevue has grown so, too, have the amenities for its residents. With new shopping venues and first-rate recreational opportunities, Bellevue truly is a gem in eastern Nebraska. 2015 Sarpy County Resource Directory

Gretna The public library plays an important role in this growing city

The Nebraska Crossing Outlets has been a great success for the city. Below, children race to find sweet treasures at the community Easter egg hunt at North Park.

B

ooks are not the only things you can check out from the Gretna Public Library. In mid-January the library added three brightly colored ukuleles to its collection. All three are available for checkout. The instruments come with a carrying case, tuner and care instructions. Because of the ease of learning to play the ukulele, the non-traditional instrument can be checked out for three weeks as well as a variety of songbooks, instructional books and DVDs. A few years ago the city of Gretna welcomed the new and revitalized Nebraska Crossing Outlets along Interstate 80 and Highway 31. The new $112 million Smart Outlets at Nebraska Crossing mall rose from the rubble and boast of stores never before seen in the market, such as Coach and Under Armor. This outlet also served as a forerunner in blending technology and social media into a shopping experience, offering digital kiosks, mobile software and a social media platform to connect brands and consumers. Outside of Nebraska Crossing, development spurred development, as seen along Highway 31 and Highway 6 with new businesses moving in all the way up to Highway 370. The lane expansion of Highway 370 has already attracted developers, and crews have

16

Sarpy County Resource Directory 2015

already begun work on new residential areas such as Aspen Creek and Remington Ridge, showing further growth in the Gretna area. This growth was also apparent in the Gretna Public Schools as 2013 marked the opening of a third preschool site at Whitetail Creek Elementary School and Gretna High School opened its new, two-story expansion with a courtyard. The school district served as another shining example of the community, with its four elementary school, middle school and high school all continuing to rank with the top schools across the state.

La Vista Aiming for growth and progress, the city is the youngest in the state

Left, the Embassy Suites La Vista Conference Center has proved to be a great draw for conventions, fundraisers and other events. Below, La Vista community parks offer spaces to play outdoors.

L

a Vista, the youngest city in Nebraska, turned 55 years old in 2015. Incorporated in 1960, La Vista’s reputation is that of growth and progress. Just in the past 10 years, the city has grown leaps and bounds in residential and commercial properties as its population has soared to more than 17,000. In January the La Vista City Council agreed to move forward in the acquisition of the buildings and the relocation of the remaining businesses in Brentwood Crossing, located at 84th Street between Harrison Street and Giles Road. Last year, taxpayers approved a half cent tax increase to help fund the revitalization project. The city’s first residents enjoyed the panorama of the Big Papio Creek Basin and from this came the name La Vista, Spanish for “the view.” Many businesses look to La Vista for its growth. The city is home to many familiar names, including Cabela’s, Yahoo!, PayPal, Oriental Trading Company, Black Hills Energy, Embassy Suites and many other smaller businesses. The Southport area, just south of Interstate 80 on Giles Road, has been a successful addition to the city. The development includes Cabela’s, a premier outdoor-gear retail store spanning three football fields packed with education, entertainment and shopping. Cabela’s has just about everything campers, hunters, hikers, anglers, birdwatchers and outdoor fashion buffs could imagine. After a day of fun in La Vista, spend a night at one of the city’s

Suburban Newspapers Inc.

hotels in the Southport area — Hampton Inn, Embassy Suites and Courtyard by Marriott. When planning an event in the area consider the impressive Embassy Suites La Vista Conference Center, which offers 45,000 square feet of meeting space with state-of-the-art audiovisual technology. After taking your turn at the number of shopping destinations in the city, treat yourself and a guest to lunch or dinner at the growing number of dining establishments. La Vista residents enjoy a state-of-the-art library which also houses the Metropolitan Community College Sarpy Center. Recreational opportunities abound in La Vista, especially with its abundance of neighborhood parks — 15 to be exact. For those who enjoy the links, La Vista Falls is a premier ninehole executive course that fits newcomers and good golfers alike and won’t take a bite out of your wallet.

Offutt The Air Force base is home to the 55th Wing, the U.S. Strategic Command and the Air Force Weather Agency Left, the Runway Run is held every May and takes a course through the base, including along a runway. Below, Burke High School students in the school’s introduction to aeronautics class take turns at the controls of a full-motion flight simulator at Offutt Air Force Base.

I

n early January it was announced that the Offutt Air Show was canceled for 2015. The reason, however, is exciting news for the 55th Wing. The 55th Wing learned that funding had been approved for a taxiway construction project for the upcoming year. The Air Force will spend nearly $7 million to repave part of taxiway Mike south of the runway. The construction project is scheduled to begin in April and estimated to continue for six months. This year marks the third time the air show was canceled for construction, once in 1994 and again in 2006. Past air shows have included entertainment such as military and civilian aerial acts, static displays and booths showcasing military history and capabilities. Situated near the Missouri River, Offutt Air Force Base is home to the 55th Wing, U.S. Strategic Command headquarters and the Air Force Weather Agency. The base originated in the late 1800s as Fort Crook, named for a well-known Indian firefighter and Civil War hero, Maj. Gen. George Crook.

By the mid-20th century, Offutt Field was transferred to the new Department of the Air Force and christened Offutt Air Force Base. Soon after, the base gained national prominence when it became the Strategic Air Command headquarters. Offutt continues to grow and change, highlighted by the ongoing construction of a $500 million headquarters for U.S. Strategic Command. Visitors hoping to learn more about Offutt are encouraged to visit the Welcome Center located at 1600 Highway 370 and neighboring with the Bellevue Public Schools office.

ocated in the heart of Sarpy County, Papillion is expanding by leaps and bounds. For years it has been known as the county seat and as a city with great potential, and that potential is more than evident when you drive down Papillion’s streets today. As legend would have it, the city was named by a group of fur traders who visited the area and found beautiful wildflowers and swarms of monarch butterflies. History books tell us that one traveler became overjoyed by the sight and proclaimed, “Papillion! (Pappy-on)” which translates to butterfly in French. Today, Papillion is thriving not only as a growing residential area, but also as a booming commercial business destination. So booming, in fact, that CNN/Money Magazine in 2007 ranked Papillion the No. 6 city in the nation, but the honors didn’t stop there. In 2010, the publication ranked Papillion as the Best Affordable Suburb in Nebraska. Papillion was named the Best Small Town in America by Livability.com in 2012, and ranked No. 8 among the Best Places to Live by CNN/Money Magazine in its 2013 rankings. In January 2013, Bloomberg Businessweek named Papillion the Best Place to Raise Children in Nebraska, praising the city’s strong schools and recreational activities for children and adults. Recent additions to the community include new commercial developments vying for valuable land within the city’s zoning jurisdiction. The Shoppes at Market Pointe, Settlers Creek and Shadow Lake Towne Center have made Papillion their home. Midlands Place, near 84th Street and Highway 370, offers additional shopping and restaurants. It is also the site of a new Fairfield Inn & Suites Hotel. Shoppers also can visit historic downtown Papillion and the specialty shops there. City officials have made a commitment to improve downtown. In summer of 2013, construction was completed on the First Street Plaza at the corner of First and Washington 40

Sarpy County Resource Directory 2015

Streets. The plaza features a small water feature, stage, seating area and restrooms. It has hosted numerous community events since opening. In addition to shopping, Papillion offers many outdoor recreational opportunities. During the hot summer months residents and visitors alike will be able to enjoy Papillion’s second splash pad at Eagle Ridge Park, near Cornhusker Road and 66th Street. Restrooms and additional parking will also be available. Schwer Park also boasts of a splash pad. There are two city-operated 18-hole golf courses in Tara Hills and Eagle Hills. The Papio Trail system winds its way through parts of Papillion, a perfect spot for a leisurely stroll, rollerblading or biking. The Sumtur Amphitheater at the Walnut Creek Recreation Area debuted in 2007 and in just a brief time became home to numerous musical and theatrical performances. The Walnut Creek Recreation Area stretches across acres of land featuring 40,000 newly planted trees to enhance the tall-grass landscape surrounding the lake, which is accessible from Highway 370 and 96th Street. The park allows outdoorsmen the pleasure of fishing, hiking, bicycling, nature study, picnicking and RV camping. Walnut Creek is also host to a few popular local running races for novice and experienced runners such as the Papillion Days Duathlon and the Mayor’s Triathlon. Werner Park, home of the Omaha Storm Chasers, the Triple A franchise of the Kansas City Royals baseball team, opened in 2011. In addition to ballgames, Werner Park hosts other events, including concerts, at the stadium located on Highway 370 and 126th Street. Suburban Newspapers Inc.

Plattsmouth Founded in 1854, the city’s downtown district has been revitalized in recent years

Rhylander Park, left, is a great place to spend the afternoon. Close by is the downtown district. Downtown Main Street offers an array of businesses and merchants.

W

hen Plattsmouth was founded in 1854, the Missouri River’s close proximity to the east end of Main Street brought extensive trade and travel opportunities. Named aptly for its location at the mouth of the Platte River, it is the county seat of Cass County. Expensive, stately homes were built in the downtown area, and many of these beautiful, historic homes are still inhabited today and listed on the National Historic Register. Other areas of the city offer building lots for new construction, as well. There are nearby lake communities, such as Beaver Lake, Buccaneer Bay and Copper Dollar Cove. To take a step back in time, a must-stop for visitors is the Cass County Historical Society Museum. Starting in 1994, the Nebraska Lied Main Street program has made a difference in the lives of countless Nebraska residents by providing communities the opportunity to revitalize their downtown business districts through economic development and historic preservation. Since 2001, when Plattsmouth applied for and received the coveted Main Street Community designation, its mission has been to

revitalize the Plattsmouth downtown business district by strengthening the economic base, promoting the unique historic resources and bolstering local pride by encouraging citizen involvement. Twin Rivers Water Park is a great place for area residents to cool off on hot summer days. The city also boasts a Senior and Community Center that includes a pool, gym, weight-lifting equipment, fitness room and an indoor track. Some activities and classes offered at the center include preschool PE, self-defense classes, basketball, sand volleyball league, healthy cooking classes, ballroom dancing, movie nights and swim lessons. Plattsmouth, its population near 7,000, is rich with recreational opportunities, including three golf courses in the immediate area, a water park, skate park, plus numerous venues for the outdoor enthusiasts, including the Schilling Wildlife Refuge. he same green rolling hills, springs, the railroad and peaceful valleys that attracted Capt. J.D. Spearman to Springfield in 1871 are the same attractions that have drawn others to the area. But today, there’s much more. The scenic MoPac bike trail (and parallel equestrian trail) plus an international award-winning winery, an artistically landscaped sculpture garden and the popular Sarpy County Fair, show that there’s a lot more to Springfield than a pastoral setting and peaceful valleys. In recent years, Springfield Drug, boasting one of the area’s last old-fashioned soda fountains, and the annual Sarpy County Fair have been popular destinations in Springfield. In addition to the county fair, Springfield also hosts its annual celebration in early June. While Springfield has a storied past, new attractions should draw people down Highway 50, including a national veterans cemetery that is scheduled to open for interments in 2016 just north of the city limits. The cemetery will be in the same growth corridor as the Travelers Cos. data center. Soaring Wings Winery and Vineyard opened a few years ago just south of town, and in a just a short period of time the vineyard has

produced award-winning wines in international contests. Soaring Wings also hosts numerous special events — including concerts — that brings folks from across the metro area to Springfield. The winery features a party room complete with a multimedia center, ideal for business meetings and end-of-the year parties. A quarter-mile down the hill sits Weiss Studios and Gardens on two acres of award-winning gardens where custom art pieces, copper birdbaths and feeders are displayed. In the spring a lovely spring arts festival is held for the surrounding communities. Children in the area can attend the four Springfield Platteview Community Schools: Springfield or Westmont Elementary Schools, Platteview Central Junior High and Platteview High School.
