CHAMBER MESSAGE

Working for Bellevue Welcome to the Bellevue-Offutt community and the greater metropolitan area of Sarpy and Douglas counties — one of the best places in Nebraska to live, work and to raise a family. The Bellevue-Offutt community is an eclectic mix of retail business, military, defense industry, banking, health care, education and food service with a sprinkling of entrepreneurial diversity thrown in for good measure — all working together for the common good. The Bellevue Chamber of Commerce understands that in order to have a strong economic environment, you must have a strong community that supports and encourages growth and innovative thinking. We are truly blessed in Bellevue to have leaders, business owners, educators and a wealth of private citizens who recognize that we all share in the responsibility of creating economic success and stability as well as a healthy community environment for our children and future generations. For the past 52 years, the Bellevue Chamber of Commerce has diligently worked to fulfill the mission to create, enhance and promote the economic environment, employment opportunities and the quality of life in our community, and to advocate and create solutions for business and community issues. The chamber is involved in numerous projects throughout the year that benefit our community. A prime example is RiverFest, an annual summer affair that brings our community together for a regional barbecue competition, family fun and festivities throughout the day, and the area's leading musical festival in the evening. The chamber sponsors Bellevue First — Bellevue Now, showcasing local businesses and restaurants. In addition, we co-sponsor a one-of-a-kind Runway Run where a 7K course includes Offutt AFB

and its runway for all participants. The chamber works with other local civic and private groups to encourage new business development, to create awareness of problems facing our community, to develop potential solutions, to be a source of information and support for business owners, and to maintain and enhance the good that is Bellevue-Offutt community. As the chamber’s president, I am honored to serve alongside the army of volunteers that work out front and behind the scenes to build a better Bellevue-Offutt community for all citizens. That is the uniqueness of our community. We think big picture, we work together to make things happen and we support the efforts of all. If you are not a member of the Bellevue Chamber of Commerce, please join us today. Your investment will pay big dividends in many different ways as we work together to make the Bellevue-Offutt community a better place to live, to work and to raise a family. Sincerely, Jim Ristow President and CEO Bellevue Chamber of Commerce

BENEFITS OF BEING A CHAMBER MEMBER

What’s in it for me? Benefits are aplenty for Bellevue Chamber of Commerce members Members of the Bellevue Chamber of Commerce enjoy many benefits and incentives. If you're thinking of starting a business or want to strengthen your bottom line, the chamber has it covered, from tips on managing finances or putting a new business owner in contact with experts to help them connect the dots. “We can help you from start to finish,” said Jim Ristow, president and CEO of the Bellevue Chamber of Commerce. Through marketing opportunities such as website exposure, member connection programs, business referral service and more; and business-to-business opportunities such as luncheons, morning and afternoon networking gatherings, Bellevue Young Professionals group and more, the chamber works to help increase exposure of local businesses. The chamber also acts as a resource center and offers personal assistance to benefit local businesses. “We help them find the resources they may or may not know that are out there,” Ristow said. Another area of help the chamber offers is business education. The chamber offers professional development training, leadership training and membership orientation. The chamber can act as a liaison for a business with the city, help with business plan modeling, or point entrepreneurs to experts in financing, either through incentives, loans or the Small Business Adminstration. The staff at the chamber also is available to mentor, if that is something that is needed. “No idea is too far-reaching for us to help launch or keep a business running,” Ristow said. The chamber also is involved with military and government affairs. It acts as both an advocate for chamber members and

as a source of information for government and community issues that directly impact local businesses. “We are active, too, in recruiting business,” Ristow said. The chamber looks for companies that would be a good fit for Bellevue and that would fill an underserved need. The chamber also acts as a welcome mat to the community by helping those who are new to Bellevue get introduced to the community. “Networking has a more far-reaching benefit than people realize,” Ristow said. And for even more networking and community involvement, the chamber plays host to several community events throughout the year, including the Nebraska'a Official Veteran's Parade, Runway Run, RiverFest, golf outings and more. — Tom Knox

CHAMBER AWARD WINNERS AMBASSADOR OF THE YEAR Michelle Seiter Omaha World-Herald, Account Executive - Retail 1314 Douglas Street, Suite 600 Omaha, NE 68102 michelle.seiter@owh.com Michelle Seiter is very fond of Bellevue. “Bellevue is my hometown. It is where I grew up,” she said. For Seiter, the city is always changing and growing. “It is definitely not the place it was 20, 10 or even five years ago.” She enjoys volunteering and taking part in civic and community events. In her past involvement with the Bellevue Chamber, she attended ribbon cuttings, open houses, volunteered for RiverFest and more. She has also volunteered with the Summer Arts Festival for the last 20 years. What Seiter admires most about the chamber is the sense of community that it offers its members. She has come to know many chamber members, and several have become great friends. “As business associates and friends, we learn from, encourage and cheer each other on,” she said. All of which further develops the sense of community that Seiter enjoys.

CHAMBER AWARD WINNERS DISTINGUISHED SERVICE AWARD Harlan Falk Great Western Bank, Senior Vice President 9290 West Dodge Road Omaha, NE 68114-3366 harlan.falk@greatwesternbank.com Harlan Falk has been involved with community and nonprofit organizations for longer than he can remember. Those organizations include the Bellevue Chamber of Commerce, Offutt Advisory Board, College World Series, the Durham Museum and several others. “I enjoy networking and supporting various nonprofits in the community,” Falk said. He has been involved with the Bellevue Chamber of Commerce, by his own count, for more than 20 years. “Basically they offer strong leadership for the overall Bellevue Community,” he said. “They have a very aggressive agenda to enhance the business development and the welfare of the community.”

SILVER ARROW AWARD Carey Hamilton and Brian Hamilton Beardmore Chevrolet 418 Fort Crook Road North, Suite 459 Bellevue, NE 68005 careybh@aol.com bchchev@aol.com Sitting in a prime location along with many of Bellevue’s auto dealers, Carey and Brian Hamilton, the owners of Beardmore Chevrolet, are quite proud of what Bellevue has to offer car buyers. Bellevue is “absolutely a shopping destination for car buyers,” said Carey. “I love that.” When Baxter opens its Bellevue location later this year, there will be 10 brands and more inventory for car shoppers to compare in Bellevue, they both pointed out. Carey is a fourth-generation car dealership owner. And together, the couple have been in the business for more than 30 years. Her father, along with General Motors, helped them get started in the business when they bought their first dealership in Grand Island in 1981. They eventually sold the Grand Island location, but still have dealerships in Kearney and Bellevue. They split their time between Grand Island — where they still have a home — Kearney and Bellevue. However, they find themselves in Bellevue more often to be with their grandchildren. “I love to babysit the grandkids,” said Carey. Brian graduated from Bellevue Public Schools, so they have strong ties to the area. But wherever they are, they find themselves getting involved with community events and nonprofit organizations. They also work to be active with the Bellevue Chamber of Commerce. The staff at the chamber are “forward-thinking and ambitious. They play an important part in Bellevue’s growth,” Carey said.

At left, Leadership Bellevue class of 2012. Below, Leadership Bellevue class members take turns introducing themselves.

Leadership Bellevue — Partners In Excellence Leadership Bellevue’s mission is to identify, educate and inspire leaders to serve the Bellevue-Offutt community. The program began almost 30 years ago and has close to 400 successful graduate leaders. Leadership Bellevue is designed to sharpen leadership skills by helping participants sense what Bellevue needs. The program exposes future leaders to the past, present and future of the community by combining presentations by current leaders, tours, panel discussions and dialogue between participants and community decision-makers. The goal is to bring participants face to face with the challenges Bellevue is meeting and to

inspire them to accept responsibility for providing necessary leadership. Each session during the 10-month program is a full day. Social opportunities encourage participants to become better acquainted and foster mutual interests in working together to address challenges facing this progressive, growing community. Leadership Bellevue is a springboard into community awareness and leadership. Leadership Bellevue is coordinated by the Bellevue Economic Enhancement Foundation in partnership with the Bellevue Chamber of Commerce.

CHAMBER AWARD WINNERS SMALL BUSINESS — BREAKING GROUND Tony Elias AME Computers - Owner 3512 Samson Way Bellevue, NE 68123 support@amecomputers.com Tony Elias, owner of AME Computers, was born and raised in Nebraska. He attended public schools in Bellevue, and Bellevue University. Elias’ passion is computers, and he got started in the field about 20 years ago. He had a desire to share his knowledge with others, so he created a website where he wrote instructional articles about computer repair. Finding he was getting a good response to his website, Elias said he thought, “what if I took all this knowledge and took it to brick and mortar?” That vision came to life on Feb. 14, 2011, when Elias opened his computer repair shop in Bellevue. “There’s nothing we’ll shy away from,” he said about troubled computers. Elias said he likes the small-town feel of Bellevue, while still having access to anything needed. “I’ve got five kids to raise, and this is a great place to raise them,” he said. With his strong attachment to Bellevue, Elias has cemented that bond even further by belonging to the Bellevue Chamber of Commerce. “They’re awesome at what they do,” he said.

CHAMBER AWARD WINNERS SMALL BUSINESS — 1-15 Employees Andy Siders Big Red Locksmiths Inc. - Owner 711 Fort Crook Road North Bellevue, NE 68005 bigredlock@aol.com “It’s great to be a part of such a cool little town,” said Andy Siders of Bellevue, owner of Big Red Locksmiths Inc. A self-proclaimed military brat, Siders has lived in a lot of places, but has called the metro area home since 1977. He graduated from Benson High School in 1983. He eventually became an apprentice locksmith and in 1992 opened Big Red Locksmiths. By buying out other local locksmiths he was able to grow the business. Currently the company has eight employees, including Siders. He credits the success of Big Red Locksmiths, in part, to “the loyalty, dedication and professionalism of my employees,” Siders said. Outside of work, Siders enjoys spending time with his wife and four kids. “I have been blessed,” he said. The family spends much of its free time golfing and fishing. Siders said he sees the Bellevue Chamber of Commerce as “a great resource for any business that is trying to increase their bottom line.”

Biskup, who joined the practice in 1991, has been practicing family medicine for 25 years and anti-aging and regenerative medicine for five years. He grew up in the Omaha area. His family moved to Bellevue when he was 15. Some of his hobbies include skiing, inline skating, hiking and biking. Biskup also enjoys spending time with his family. Both doctors are active in the community, and see the Bellevue Chamber of Commerce as essential for their business. “Being in the chamber, you have someone looking out for your business at the local and state levels,” Saniuk said.

BELLEVUE LIVING

This is the good life Nebraska is certainly home of the good life. Nowhere is that more true than in our state’s first city, Bellevue. Situated on the banks of the Missouri River, Bellevue’s beauty and accessibility only begin to tell the story of why Bellevue has enjoyed steady, continued growth over the years. A very important element of the American dream is to own a home, and Bellevue is the perfect place to make that dream come true. “Bellevue has a very good assortment of homes and reasonably priced homes, making that dream of owning a home attainable for just about everyone,” said Rusty Hike, broker/owner of Hike Real Estate in Bellevue. Hike said Bellevue’s easy access to the Omaha metro area, the city’s wonderful schools and the family feel evoked throughout Bellevue are good selling points. “It happens a lot,” he said, “especially with our military families. They are stationed here, they love it, and when they get orders for another base they oftentimes keep their Bellevue home with the plan of moving back here someday.” Hike said that scenario gives Bellevue a great market for rentals, but more importantly the knowledge that the rentals will become permanent homes

again in the near future. Bellevue also boasts a wide range of senior living opportunities. There are several community-style living options that offer several levels of independent and assisted living, with home choices that range from apartment style to detached villas. These communities offer a variety of amenities, from barber shops and beauty salons to art studios and car washes. Home care is a choice for those who wish to stay in their own home. If a higher level of care is needed there are skilled nursing, Alzheimer’s and memory care services in the Bellevue area. Bellevue’s variety of homes is due in part to its unique location – wide expanses of the city are on the banks of the river, other neighborhoods wind through Fontenelle Hills and the adjacent Fontenelle Forest, and still other neighborhoods enjoy the Kennedy Freeway proximity that comes with homes closer to the center of town. In recent years, Hike said, some of Bellevue’s established neighborhoods have undergone transition. For example, the Fontenelle Forest area has seen a rebirth with extensive remodeling under way in what Hike said has always been a popular neighborhood. At the same time, new-home builders are buying inner-city lots and filling up neighborhoods. From small starter homes to popular larger homes for growing families to more upscale executive homes, Bellevue has a large assortment of homes to choose from at affordable prices and in a community people are proud to call home. Bellevue really is the home of the good life. — Deb Reinard and Tom Knox

Bellevue offers affordable living CNN Money Magazine named Bellevue to its Top 5 list of Most Affordable in its Best Places to Live competition in 2012. In doing so, the magazine said: “People who live here enjoy wide open spaces, including the vast Fontenelle Forest, a 2,000-acre preserve of wetlands and prairie. They also benefit from a low unemployment rate — just 4.4 percent — thanks, in part, to the nearby Offutt Air Force Base, which boasts 10,000 military and civilian workers. The steady supply of jobs from the base helps keep the housing market stable. And ample land in the surrounding prairie means builders have plenty of lots to choose from, which helps keep home prices cheap.” — Deb Reinard

Bellevue: A brief historical overview There was a time when presentday Bellevue was little more than open prairie and woodland. Fewer than 20 years had gone by since the Lewis and Clark Expedition had passed and returned through the area. Native Americans, members of the Otoe and Omaha Tribes, lived near the Missouri\

River and Papillion Creek. A furtrading post operated by Joshua Pilcher was not much more than a dot on the overall landscape. The year was 1822, about as far back as Bellevue can concretely trace its origins as the oldest permanent settlement in Nebraska. As a result of its connection with the Missouri River, by the

1830s Bellevue experienced the first of many of its booms. The fur trade was flourishing and Bellevue served as a springboard for many traders and trappers headed westward. The town was the point of embarkation for goods enroute to St. Louis. Spurred by the growth, fur trader and perhaps Bellevue’s best candidate for city father, Lucien Fontenelle, built a larger trading post in 1832, selling the former location to the federal government for use as the Missouri River Indian Agency or Bellevue Agency. Following the death of Lucien in 1840, his son, Logan, returned to the territory and served as an interpreter for the U.S. Government. Logan’s mother was a daughter of Chief Big Elk of the Omaha and Logan would eventually become chief himself in 1853. Logan also worked for Peter Sarpy, a businessman and ferryboat operator. Sarpy brought scores of people across the Missouri River on their journey west, including fortune seekers during the California gold rush and Mormons headed for Utah. He also aided in establishing the Bellevue Town Company, with the town officially organizing in 1856. Success has not come without setbacks. Bellevue was passed over for capital of the Nebraska Territory and as a selection site for the Transcontinental Railroad. Bellevue also encountered hardship in the years that followed. Its population and influence Above, left: Fontenelle Hall at Bellevue College in the early 1900s. At left: A vintage scene from Fort Crook, now known as Offutt Air Force Base.

dwindled and led to relocation of the county seat in 1875. Yet in an era where ghost towns were common, Bellevue prevailed. The resurgence of the community was the result of two major factors. Bellevue College, a fouryear university for men and women, opened in the fall of 1883. The second element was the commissioning of Fort Crook by the War Department in 1890, with construction taking place between 1894 and 1896. Named after the late Gen. George Crook, the fort played an important role during the Spanish-American War. With the coming of the Second World War, Fort Crook was selected as the site of the Martin Bomber Plant. Thousands of bombers were produced here during the war, including the Enola Gay and Bockscar, the planes used to drop atomic bombs near the end of World War II. Fort Crook was renamed Offutt Air Force Base, after Jarvis Offutt, a World War I pilot killed in France. The base took on a new set of challenges contesting Cold War threats and served as headquarters of the Strategic Air Command from 1948 to

1992. Today, Offutt Air Force Base is home to the 55th Wing, the Air Force Weather Agency and United States Strategic Command. From its beginnings as a cluster of buildings associated with a trading post to its status as third-largest city in Nebraska and a significant economic player, Bellevue has been on a remarkable journey. The city has not only a rich local history, but one that is intertwined with history on a national and even international scale. Most of all, the history is something we should be proud of.

The Bellevue Depot was moved to its present location at the Sarpy County Historical Museum in 1970.

Avenue of Flags With American flags going up in mid-May and flying until mid-November, some of Bellevue’s main streets are transformed into Bellevue’s Avenue of Flags. Since 1999, the American flags, thanks to the generosity of donors, have been flown proudly along Mission Avenue and Franklin Street in Olde Towne and also along Galvin Road. Over the years, The Avenue of Flags has continued to expand west along Highway 370. The number of flags have fluctuated each year, directly reflecting the level of participation of business and community members of Bellevue. Organized by the Bellevue Chamber of Commerce, and pulled off by many volunteers, this yearly patriotic display is in honor of current service members and veterans of the United States military.

Many of the flags need to be replaced each year due to wear and tear from the elements, with only about 10 percent of the flags lasting longer than one year. Even some of the poles need to be replaced. Each year replacement hardware must be ordered, too. To help sponsor the flags, the donation is $60 per flag. Make checks payable to the Bellevue Economic Enhancement Foundation. Donations can be dropped off at the Bellevue Chamber of Commerce office or mailed to B.E.E.F., 1102 Galvin Road South, Bellevue, NE 68005. Hungry? Your first stop should be in Bellevue Let’s face it, America is a melting pot of cultures. And Bellevue offers a variety of flavors and cuisines from around the globe. American cuisine has changed over the years, but many eateries, pubs, casual dining and fast food options have it covered. There are even some great barbecue establishments, too. And there are plenty of pizza places to suit a variety of tastes. But if your mood is for something south of the border, there are several restaurants offering Mexican fare. Or, if something with an Asian flair is what you’re craving, there are plenty of establishments from which to choose. Hosting an event? Look no further than the city limits to find a caterer. Don’t forget those pastries for the office or the cake for the special birthday or wedding. There are several bakeries in the city, too. No matter where your taste buds want to take you, Bellevue restaurants can satisfy. — Tom Knox

THAT’S ENTERTAINMENT

Having fun in Bellevue Whether indoors or out, there are plenty of options to keep you entertained in Bellevue. From bowling to skating, movies to theater and golfing to trails, whatever you are in the mood for, the city has it covered. For those who like to head outside, there are miles of trails and paths for hiking, biking or walking. Bellevue is home to Fontenelle Forest Nature Center, which is managed by the Fontenelle Nature Association — one of Nebraska’s oldest conservation organizations. The organization cares for nearly 2,000 acres of forest, prairie, waterways and wetlands along the Missouri River in the Loess Hills. The forest’s 26 miles of trails and a mile-long barrierfree boardwalk allow visitors to enjoy the beauty of the natural surroundings. Bellevue also has several other trails. The longest is the Keystone Trail, which begins in Haworth Park and stretches 16.2 miles to northwest Omaha. The Bellevue Loop veers off the Keystone and follows a levee above the Missouri River to the mouth of the Papio Creek.

Fontenelle Nature Association Founded in 1913, FNA is one of Nebraska’s oldest conservation organizations and one of the largest private nature centers in the United States. The properties encompass nearly 2,000 acres of forest, prairie, waterways and wetlands along the Missouri River in the geographically significant Loess Hills. Fontenelle Forest Nature Center is designated as a National Natural Landmark with the U.S. Department of the Interior and is listed on the National Register of Historic Sites. Notable historic sites that are located within FNA properties include more than 70 Nebraska Phase Indian lodge sites; the trading post of Manual Lisa and Lucien Fontenelle; and a portion of the Mormon Trail. There is also reference in the journals of Meriwether Lewis and William Clark to a five-day encampment along the Missouri River, which is widely held to be located in Fontenelle Forest. More than 90,000 visitors walk FNA paths each year, including nearly 30,000 children and adults who participate in environmental education courses. Bellevue Little Theatre packs big punch The Bellevue Little Theatre, 203 West Mission Avenue, has been entertaining audiences for more than four decades. The marquee changes several times each year with announcements of the latest comedy, drama or musical playing on its revolving stage. Sarpy County’s only performing arts center, the theater continues to thrive. During its first eight years, productions were held in restaurants, schools and at Bellevue University. In 1977, the board purchased and renovated the 244-seat 1940s Roxy Movie Theater building. In 1992, the adjacent building was purchased to serve as dressing rooms. The thrift shop/reservation center, which is more than 20 years old, is operated with an all-volunteer staff and is currently located in the theater building. Support from the Midlands Community Foundation and Bellevue Little Theatre patrons, and recent support of the Theatres of the Midlands, has provided state-ofthe-art lighting and sound systems, as well as interior and exterior renovations to the stage, proscenium, lobby and marquee. GREENING OF BELLEVUE

LEED-ing the way

Bellevue is very proud to be home to two LEED-certified buildings – Bellevue Medical Center and the Air Force Weather Agency at Offutt AFB. LEED certification is more than a buzz phrase circulating through the construction world. It has become a coveted recognition that many strive for, yet only a select few are able to attain. According to the United States Green Building Council, LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) is a voluntary, consensus-based, market-driven program that provides third-party verification of green buildings. From individual buildings and homes to entire neighborhoods and communities, LEED is transforming the way built environments are designed, constructed and operated. Comprehensive and flexible, LEED addresses the entire life cycle of a building. “When someone sees the Lt. Gen. Thomas S. GREENING OF BELLEVUE

Continued from page 63 first time,” said AFWA Commander Col. Louis Zuccarello, “the first thing they comment on is its sheer beauty. From the aesthetically pleasing native plants and shrubs along the walkways to the incredible number of windows opening the facility up to the outside, the building invites visitors to come closer. Once inside, they’re impressed by the massive atrium with its glowing light coming in, as well as the overall modern design and look of the adjoining offices. Its construction and design is truly inspirational.” A great deal of planning goes into the construction of a LEED building, including where and how to situate the building on a piece of land. Zuccarello said the AFWA building design was shifted 90 degrees during planning to maximize the light coming through the windows while reducing the effects of the afternoon summer sun. He said the outer glass has highly efficient window glazing and sunshades to keep energy usage to a minimum. Light shelves on the outside of windows help bounce the natural light farther into the facility. All lights in the building use occupancy sensors and are able to sense the amount of natural light, dimming accordingly and using less energy. During construction of the Bellevue Medical Center, the eco-conscious theme was carried throughout the facility, from the building’s design to the use of natural resources to create a soothing environment that enhances healing while promoting a general sense of health and well-being. The medical center’s interior utilizes Ipe wood

accents and zinc cladding which are designed to be maintenance-free for many years. And while LEED buildings are constructed with the building’s occupants in mind, Bellevue Medical Center took extra care for its patients and visitors by incorporating interior paints, adhesives, flooring and ceiling tiles made with low volatile organic compound (VOC) content. Even casework such as cabinetry and shelving was made with formaldehyde-free particleboard. Bellevue Medical Center continued its environmentally-friendly theme throughout its 20-acre site with the use of native plants and grasses winding a path through a healing garden and leading to a natural wetland on the campus. — Deb Reinard

GREEN BELLEVUE

Making the community a better place In 2009 a seedling was planted in Bellevue that in less than four years has blossomed into a lush garden aptly named Green Bellevue. Bellevue carries the unique distinction as the only city in Nebraska to have a 1,400-acre forest within its city limits and through the efforts of Green Bellevue has earned the designations as Bellevue Community Arboretum and a Tree City USA. While Green Bellevue has a clear interest in the city’s landscape and the nurturing of Bellevue’s trees, the organization has branched out in several directions to fulfill its mission of “Coming together to ensure a more beautiful and sustainable community.” About 33 percent of the average person’s trash comes from yard waste and kitchen scraps. Green Bellevue can teach you how to turn that garbage into compost. Don Preister, president of Green Bellevue, said the organization has produced films and offers demonstrations on composting and will feature even more composting ideas at the organization’s Earth Day Celebration on April 21. Though recycling and composting are a large part of Green Bellevue’s educational curriculum, the organization has identified several other initiatives. One such initiative has the goal of Bellevue becoming certified as a National Wildlife Federation Certified Community. A second initiative is Green Bellevue Trails, which is designed to connect neighborhoods through interlocking trail systems. An upcoming project thes year is an underpass to be built near 40th Street that will take walkers and bikers below Highway 370 from the Quail Creek neighborhood to Twin Creek. “We are looking at a way of moving people Continued on page 66

Other Green Bellevue initiatives include: • Green Building, which is designed to create an awareness of environmentally-friendly construction practices such as those engineered into the building of Bellevue Medical Center. • Sustainable Planting Methods, which utilizes the gardening talent of volunteers who count as one of their successes Bellevue’s designation as an American Rose City. • Keeping Bellevue Beautiful, which includes Green Bellevue’s participation in the annual Great American CleanUp and America Recycles Day and also provides the community with Green Bellevue volunteers who educate on recycling, reusing and reducing waste. • Green Schools hopes to garner

the attention of Bellevue’s youngest citizens and set them on a path of lifelong environmentally-friendly living. The Green Schools initiative uses the talents of current and former educators. • Know Your Farmer, Know Your Food encourages the support of local farmers as well as local farmers markets. “We develop our farmers market as a family activity,” Preister said. Bellevue’s Farmers Market is held on Saturdays in Washington Park beginning in late May and runs throughout the summer. Having planted nearly 500 trees in the last three years and contributed more than $300,000 in that same timeframe, Green Bellevue has set down some strong roots and looks to grow into a viable community resource for many years to come. — Deb Reinard

What is TerraCycling? We’ve all heard of recycling, and people in Bellevue are doing their part as evidenced by a 24 percent increase in recycling in the past two years. But have you also heard of TerraCycling? Instead of taking that closetful of old shoes to the thrift store (which, by the way, is also a wonderful form of recycling), those shoes can be repurposed into items such as plastic containers or park benches. That’s TerraCycling, and Green Bellevue can help you plan TerraCycling Brigades that will add funds to your nonprofit organization. And it’s not just shoes on the Terracycle list. The wrapper from your energy bar, the cork from a wine bottle, the pen that just ran out of ink and many other personal care items are all part of the TerraCycle program. “We have a volunteer,” said Don Preister, president of Green Bellevue, “who takes terracycling a step farther and weaves plastic shopping bags into purses and vests.” — Deb Reinard

Green Bellevue organized a variety of family friendly activities to commemorate Earth Day. A 5K run was part of the celebration at Everett Park.

Educational opportunities get an A+ in Bellevue. Parents who are ready to send their little ones off to preschool can choose from a number of public and private options, as well as the early childhood offerings presented by Bellevue Public Schools, Omaha Public Schools and the nearby Papillion-La Vista School District. Bellevue is home to many award-winning elementary, middle and high schools, both public and private. Enrollment has been growing at all schools thanks in part to a booming economy in the city. Another thing that makes Bellevue-area schools attractive is the feeling of community that each school brings to its neighborhood and its students. One such academic institution is Cornerstone Christian School. Cornerstone, with deep roots in Sarpy County, first opened its doors in Papillion in 1984. Soon after, Cornerstone

A big thank you

Since 2001, Walmart employees have been writing giant messages on fields near Offutt Air Force Base. In 2012, the field in the northwest corner of Highways 370 and 75 was the spot for the message, “THANK YOU FOR OUR FREEDOM,” which took about four days to create. Thirty workers, 2,500 pounds of flour and 500 wooden stakes were required for the letters to be plowed into the dirt. The message is so large, it takes up the area of 35 football fields. Here, Tim Malik, poured flour while Greg Cook marked the spot with a wooden stake as part of Walmart’s annual thanks to the military.

In fact, the defense industry and the military are Bellevue’s largest business sector. Offutt AFB has a total economic impact of more than $2.6 billion (2010). More than 50 defense companies do business in the Bellevue-Offutt community and employ more than 2,500 people, including Northrop Grumman, Lockheed Martin and McCallie Associates, among others. The Bellevue office employs more than 400 professionals and chose Bellevue for its 110,000-square-foot, state-of-the-art information technology site in 2005. Smaller, independent defense contractors like the Garrett Group and Software Engineering Services Systems call Bellevue home. It’s because of the city’s high-tech labor pool, dependable utilities, extensive telecommunications system and urbanized infrastructure that Offutt AFB and the Bellevue-Offutt community continue to grow. Bellevue, Nebraska – Strategically located in the heartland of America The American dream is alive and well in Bellevue, the third-largest city in Nebraska. Nationally, the “Cornhusker State” was named by Forbes Magazine as ninth best for business. The city boasts a highly educated workforce, an infrastructure for urban technology, affordable cost of living, top-ranked K-12 schools, and beautiful parks and trails. Known as the birthplace of Nebraska, this city of nearly 80,000 is in the heartland of the country, along the banks of the Missouri River. The location of progressive industry in the region is no accident. Business and industry are drawn to the area by a strong pro-business climate, nationally recognized schools, outstanding medical facilities, one of the nation’s lowest costs of living and a labor force with one of the nation’s best work ethics. Business leaders praise the region’s transportation assets, communication facilities, mild climate, high quality of life, recreational opportunities and natural scenic beauty.

Twin Creek is a 135-acre regional center located in the heart of Bellevue, Nebraska at the northwest corner of 36th Street and Highway 370. Anchored retail and Class A office spaces are limited in Bellevue which is why many local and national businesses are located at Twin Creek. Bellevue is also considered the next area of concentration of significant growth, including new developments and an increased residential outlook. Don’t miss out on the opportunity to join the tenants already at Twin Creek.

Bellevue’s largest employer is Offutt Air Force Base, with more than 6,000 activeduty personnel, 3,000 civilian employees and a $1.3 billion economic impact. Offutt is home to the 55th Wing, U.S. Strategic Command, the Air Force Weather Agency and Air Combat Command’s Heartland of America Band. That’s why the city’s largest business sector is the defense industry. Hosting more than 50 defense contractors in the community with more than 3,000 employees, Bellevue boasts a highly trained and educated workforce. Northrop Grumman, Lockheed Martin and McCallie Associates are Bellevue’s largest contractors concentrating on mission-support contracts. Medical sector growth Bellevue broke ground recently on its newest industry — the medical sector. The community is home to a newly completed $8 million Alegent medical clinic and welcomed the opening of the Bellevue Medical Center in 2010. The center is a $100 million capital investment in the community that will employ 500 people. “Bellevue is Nebraska’s thirdlargest city and we needed a hospital to serve our community and our Continued on page 78

future growth,” according to Bellevue Mayor Rita Sanders. The hospital provides labor and delivery care, emergency care, inpatient and outpatient surgery, and intensive care. Facilities feature state-of-the-art diagnostic services and equipment. A result of growth of the medical sector is increased interest in additional medical office buildings. Communications capabilities Bellevue’s state-of-the-art communications capabilities are unmatched. The city is served by digital central offices, and is one of just a few areas of the country that is at the intersection of east-west and northsouth fiber optic networks. Dark fiber and dual power grids are two key reasons why businesses have been successful.

Pro-business tax climate Through use of targeted business tax incentives, exemptions and low taxes, Nebraska offers a tax structure that is equitable to businesses and individuals. The state’s solid financial position is guaranteed by a state constitution that prohibits deficit financing. Several performance-based incentives allow firms to earn a series of tax credits, refunds and exemptions for investment and new job creation. The economy also benefits from solid population and labor force growth, as well as a growing industry mix. One central goal of the consortium is to develop students who have the knowledge of international and cultural issues, proficiency in foreign languages and skills in research, analysis, and critical thinking required of professionals employed in the 16 federal agencies that make up the U.S. intelligence community. The university offers graduate and undergraduate Security Management degree programs – the nation’s largest.
