Education Notes

Proving they can dance The team of Cabria Thompson, Barbara Bilski and Lesley Gonzalez were co-champions in the first ever Bolingbrook High School “So You Think You Can Dance” competition. The other champion team included Calyan Foster, Antionette Tidwell and Dasia Newman. Katie Timmer’s 11th and 12th grade physical education classes participated in the event, doing their own choreography and coming up with their own costumes. Possible dance categories included cultural, jazz, ballet, hip hop, Latin or ballroom. Submitted photo

MILITARY NOTES ■ Navy Petty Officer 3rd Class Adam Dassie of Bolingbrook has graduated from the U.S. Navy’s Nuclear Power School at Naval Nuclear Power Training Command in Goose Creek, S.C.

Owusu, who finished third in the Will County Spelling Bee last year, clinched his 8th grade berth on precocious in the 9th round after Danielle Cinquepalmi misspelled indigenous. Cinquepalmi finished 3rd in the overall spelling bee.

■ Five Valley View School District 365U students received free refurbished computers and related hardware and software from Vista Learning’s Computers 2 Kids in Need programs. Twins Clinton and Dillon McAndrew, who are in kindergarten at Wood View Elementary School, B.J. Ward Elementary School 2nd grader Alondra Valdez, Jane Addams Middle School 8th grader McKenzie Burns, and Humphrey Middle School 8th grader To Vo were all selected from a large group of nominees. In all, 25 students from throughout Will County received computers.

ACHIEVEMENTS ■ Seventh grader Jayden Flores spelled anomaly and pneumonic correctly in the 17th round, edging eighth grader Edward Owusu to win the Jane Addams Middle School Spelling Bee. Both spellers will advance to the VVSD Spelling Bee at Humphrey Middle School on Feb. 5, along with 6th grader Jimel Rogers who spelled forensics correctly in the sixth round to beat Kristian Bielski. Rogers finished 5th overall in the Addams competition. Flores earned his 7th grade berth when he spelled
