On the record with ... Dina Frigo By STEPHEN Di BENEDETTO sdibenedetto@shawmedia.com

HUNTLEY — Dina Frigo’s passion for the developmentally disabled has led to the creation of a new program that she hopes will lead to a healthier lifestyle for families affected by autism. Frigo approached officials from the Northern Illinois Special Recreation Association in early December about an idea that would create a social outlet for autistic children, their caregivers and siblings. Enthusiastic about the premise, NISRA and Frigo quickly developed the 3-in-1 program and will be hosting the first event from 7 to 9 p.m. Feb. 8 at the Sage Therapeutic Recreation Center, 285 Memorial Drive, Crystal Lake. The idea came to Frigo, after almost 10 years of caring for her son, Anthony, 11, who was diagnosed with autism at 2 1⁄2 years old. The Huntley mother of three wanted to create an avenue that allowed for families with special needs children to be together, after she has spent years juggling therapy sessions, home and personal life. The program, which is being supported by NISRA and Options and Advocacy, provides entertainment for the autistic children and their siblings, while parents can socialize during a yoga class. Frigo is working with NISRA to make the program a monthly event that soon could include more fitness and wellness activities. The deadline to apply is Jan. 25. Registration is $25 a family. Interested people can contact NISRA’s

Maribeth Hutchinson at 815-459-0737. Frigo sat down with reporter Stephen Di Benedetto to discuss her family’s experience with autism and the upcoming family program. Di Benedetto: How has your family gone about coping with autism since Anthony was diagnosed? Frigo: First all, finding out your child has autism is very devastating, very stressful on the marriage. The divorce rates in special-needs family is in the 90th percentile. I’m actually a single mom. It affected our family so much. I pretty much did everything I could. I got him early intervention before he turned 3, when he was diagnosed. He had developmental therapy, speech therapy and occupational therapy in the home, and we just did everything very swiftly and as much as possible. ... It’s hands-on with Anthony. He’s got a whole schedule, and he follows that real well. Honestly, he does real well. I see that by what I implement for him, in his schooling, activities and life skills. Di Benedetto: How have the experiences you’ve gone through with Anthony influence this program you’re developing? Frigo: Everyone is affected by the autism – the caregiver, the siblings. I thought what a better way to bring forward something positive that we can all do together. Because with the autism or any type of special needs, you’re running back and forth. You are taking them to therapy. You’re trying to get the other kids involved and meanwhile, in the interim, you are trying to take care of yourself and work and try to take care of a family. I feel it’s so

instrumental to take care of yourself, as a caregiver, and what a better way to have everything all in one, where you can bring the siblings, and the special-needs kids are attended to. Di Benedetto: Is the essential point of this program to get everyone in the same room together? Frigo: Yes. The siblings can relate because they either have a brother or sister who has special needs. The caregivers definitely. You need some moral support. What a better way to exercise and talk about things and get some stress off of you? You

don’t have to go to 10 different places to drop everyone off and pick one up. It’s a nice social outlet. Di Benedetto: What do you hope families will take from this program? Frigo: My primary goal is to get Anthony into a posture that would enable him to have a healthy, fruitful and enriched life, as well as the other families and other children who have special needs. I have a lot more in store for the future, some more programs to implement. This is near and dear to my heart.

Fields come first in Huntley High School expansion By STEPHEN Di BENEDETTO sdibenedetto@shawmedia.com

HUNTLEY – A $12 million expansion of Huntley High School likely will begin this summer with renovation of athletic fields, including a built-in irrigation system and new, synthetic turf for football. The expansion to address crowded classrooms, hallways and common areas will not include some big-ticket items, such as a new swimming pool and field house. District 158 officials also have ruled out building a second high school, saying that a price tag of at least $60 million would be too costly for a student population that has stopped growing at the feverish pace administrators projected a decade ago. “The bottom line is we are using predictions based on what kids are here now,”

Superintendent John Burkey said. “It wouldn’t be responsible at all to go down that road of building another school. It’s more about what’s going on in the school.” The district has sketched out a busy year of expansion. The board met Thursday to endorse a $36,250 contract with architects from Wold in Palatine. The architects will sketch possible interior and exterior improvements the district can afford with its $12 million expansion budget. Officials expect to award construction bids for field improvements by April, board documents show. In the early 2000s, the Huntley-based district of about 9,000 students projected enrollment one day would reach 15,000 students. But the economic downturn slowed Huntley’s population boom. Using current elementary enrollment, the district now projects the high school

will exceed 3,000 students by 2019. The high school, Burkey said, has gone through minor expansions to accommodate the current enrollment of about 2,450 students. It originally was constructed in the mid-1990s as a combination middle school and high school. A year and a half ago, the district formed a panel of high school administrators and teachers to study the building’s physical and programming needs for a larger student population. The panel revealed its wish list in a three-hour presentation last week, citing the need for wider hallways, more parking, a larger cafeteria, flexible library space and classrooms equipped with technology. But athletic fields will come first. Burkey said the school’s athletic venues were last renovated in 1999. Fields for baseball, softball and soccer need an irriga-

tion system, he said, and synthetic turf and more seating for football would allow the school to attract more fans and use the field for multiple purposes. “There’s been nothing done out there since the school has been opened. It’s something we have to address,” Burkey said. “It’s basically weeds is what the fields are.” Amenities such as a larger swimming pool and indoor field house will have to wait. The two facilities combined would cost upward of $18 million, which would exceed the district’s expansion budget that uses a state construction grant. District officials, though, are talking with the Huntley Park District about splitting costs on a potential field house used by both entities. “If there is a way to share costs, it might be doable,” Burkey said. “But a field house by itself, we can’t afford.”

MARENGO – For many working adults, the prospect of returning to college can be daunting. When Rob Jasinski decided to return to college to get a bachelor’s degree after more than a decade in the workforce, it wasn’t an easy decision. The 46-year-old Union resident earned his Bachelor of Science degree in mechanical engineering technology from Milwaukee School of Engineering in November. Jasinski, who has worked at Nissan Forklift in Marengo for 19 years, said getting the degree was “amazingly difficult.” It required taking one course at a time for many years, long drives to and from Milwaukee, countless hours of homework, and time away from his wife Laurie and their three daughters. Jasinski enrolled at Milwaukee School of Engineering in the fall of 1997. He was 32. “I missed a lot,” he said. “But I’m really enjoying it now.” More and more older students are returning to the classroom. Some are looking to gain additional skills after being laid off in recent years. Others are looking for more money and better job prospects. Whatever the reason, projections show the number of college students over the age of 25 is expected to grow at a faster pace than traditional students between the ages of 18 and 24. College enrollment for students ages 25 to 34 is projected to increase 20 percent between 2010 and 2021, according to the most recent figures from the National Center for Education Statistics. Enrollment for students 35 and older is projected to increase 25 percent during the same time period. That’s compared to a projected 10 percent increase in enrollment for 18 to 24year-olds. However, enrollment projections for all three student groups were far below

previous growth rates recorded from 1996 to 2010, according to the report. Many schools, including McHenry County College, have made changes to make going back to school easier for older students. Changes include offering more online and night and weekend courses and boosting support services for nontraditional students. McHenry County College President Vicky Smith has been pushing the school to offer short, stack-able courses that allow students to quickly acquire a certificate that would give them additional employment opportunities while working toward a degree. Jasinski started on the path to a bachelor’s degree at McHenry County College. After getting his associate’s degree there, he took a year off before enrolling at Milwaukee School of Engineering. He had looked into taking courses online, but said, at the time, not enough quality programs were being offered for engineering. He also looked at several colleges in Illinois, but found Milwaukee School of Engineering “had all the right things” he wanted as an adult student. “If I was going to do it, I was going to do it right,” Jasinski said. Most semesters he took one course at a time, usually making the 85-mile drive to Milwaukee twice a week after a full day of work at Nissan Forklift. His wife often brought him food at work so he could make it through the long days and nights. On school nights, he returned home to Union around 10 or 11 p.m., only to get up the early the next morning for work. Other nights, he’d do his homework alongside daughters Allison, Rachael and Courtney. At one point, Jasinski and his wife sat down and drew up some rough calculations of what all the driving was costing them. They estimated he drove about 140,000 miles over 2,700 hours going back and

forth from school and spent about $30,000 on gas. Despite the long drive, Jasinski said a number of factors made going back to school a bit easier. His company, Nissan Forklift, reimbursed him for tuition costs and his boss allowed him a flexible schedule in order to attend classes. He also had his family behind him. “I couldn’t have done it without the support of my wife and my kids,” Jasinski said. The biggest challenge for Jasinski was staying on track. He was forced to take some semesters off when the classes he needed weren’t available. After a semester off, getting back into the routine of studying, driving, and missing his daughters’ sporting events proved difficult. Jasinski took his classes seriously. He always sat in the front row and took notes, in contrast to some of the younger students who lacked his motivation. All his hard work paid off. Jasinski made good on his goal to graduate – with a 3.5 grade point average – before his daughters finished high school. Many family members and friends attended his graduation ceremony in November. “I was elated,” he said. “It was a relief to have finally accomplished my goal. I was proud for me and my family.” For other adults considering going back to college, Jasinski encouraged them to study all the available options before picking a school and not to give up. “It’s absolutely worth it,” he said. “You just have to stick with it. I stuck with it and it has paid off already.” The degree has given him additional opportunities for promotion at Nissan Forklift. It has also helped inspire his daughters to work hard at school, a lesson they learned from doing their homework alongside him. “Don’t be afraid,” he said. “There are a lot of adult students out there.”

Well-wishers feather Huntley quilters’ funds By STEPHEN Di BENEDETTO sdibenedetto@shawmedia.com

HUNTLEY – About two months ago, local Quilts of Valor volunteers who make lap-sized blankets as a thank-you to area veterans were on the verge of retiring their sewing needles. Demand for the quilts was slowing and the group’s start-up money was vanishing. Now, though, the group is in business for 18 months more because of overwhelming response to a lateOctober Northwest Herald article on the plight of the Huntley-based group. “We have had a huge response,” said Sue Bruss, who founded the group with fellow Sun City resident Jan Meyer. “We were floored. We never expected that kind of outpouring.” The local group started after Bruss and Meyer heard about the national Quilts of Valor organization at a quilting convention. They were given $6,000 in startup money to form a local chapter, after making quilts for area veterans at a special event in 2011. Last fall, the money had dwindled to about $200 and the founders feared it would run out at the end of the year. Then the community responded. Bruss, Meyer and the group’s 30 volunteers received donations from $10 to $500. A local firefighters union gave $250 and challenged colleagues across northern Illinois to match or beat the donation. The quilters now have about $3,000 to buy the high-quality fabric they need to make quilts. The chapter has presented quilts to hundreds of veterans, including 20 at Transitional Living Services in Hebron on Jan. 10. “We are always looking for people and recipients – a brother and uncle who has never been recognized,” Bruss said.

Mistaken donation ignites controversy in Grafton Township By STEPHEN Di BENEDETTO sdibenedetto@shawmedia.com

HUNTLEY – A $1,000 donation made in error to Grafton Township’s food pantry has turned controversial, causing Supervisor Linda Moore to claim that a public request for a refund may have been politically motivated. The controversy erupted last week when Sun City resident Gerald LaBonte asked the township board during its monthly meeting to refund the $1,080 his neighborhood donated to the Grafton Township Food Pantry by mistake. LaBonte, who was elected by his neighbors to represent his Sun City neighborhood, told the board that the donation was meant for the nonprofit Grafton Food Pantry because the organization has more purchasing power from its partnership with the Northern Illinois Food Bank.

The volunteer, he said, wasn’t aware that two food pantries existed in Grafton Township. The neighborhood holds a semiannual fundraiser for the Grafton Food Pantry each fall in October. He said he made Moore aware of the mistake Nov. 5, but was told that the checks were already cashed and going to a good cause. “What are the ethical values of a person who received money and found out that it was given to you by mistake and then says, ‘I’m not giving it back?’ ” LaBonte said. Moore stated in a news release Monday that the money likely would be refunded, nearly two months after LaBonte said he spoke with Moore about the error. Moore said LaBonte, “a self-appointed spokesman” on the issue, did request a neighborhood refund during last week’s board meeting. But she denied in the release that she knew about the mistake

in the fall. “No one told us that at the time,” Moore said in the release. “Due to the timing of Mr. LaBonte’s comments, it is hoped this is not a political move, what with the Republican primary election coming up Feb. 26, 2013.” Moore is running against Huntley Trustee Pam Fender and attorney Marty Waitzman in the primary contest. Both challengers have said they decided to run to end the dysfunction in Grafton that has defined Moore’s tenure. But when asked about the Nov. 5 conversation with LaBonte in a conversation with the Northwest Herald on Wednesday, Moore said the two did speak about the donation mistake. She said her lawyer advised her not to refund the money. “What else can I do but follow legal advice?” she said.

But Moore couldn’t recall why her lawyer gave permission to refund the money, nearly two months after being told she couldn’t refund the money. “My lawyer changed his mind,” she said. LaBonte said he was insulted Moore would turn this issue into political gamesmanship. He said he has never voted in a Grafton Township election, and that he didn’t even know the names of the Grafton trustees until weeks before approaching them about a refund. He said the refund procedure Moore’s lawyer detailed in a letter sent to him Jan. 12 is cumbersome for his neighbors, who have to submit proof of payment and have it verified before receiving a refund. “For me, she has turned a simple request to return money into a legal problem,” LaBonte said. “Why turn to a lawyer? I don’t understand it.”

BATAVIA – More live classical music could be in the Tri-Cities’ future. Last week, the Elgin Symphony Orchestra performed at the Batavia Fine Arts Centre for the first time. Representatives of the ESO and the venue said the public response to the performance exceeded their expectations. Dominic Cattero, manager at the Batavia Fine Arts Centre, said the orchestra sold 540 tickets for the Thursday performance of Vivaldi’s “The Four Seasons,” accompanied by a performance of Tchaikovsky’s “Serenade for Strings in C Major.” The arts center can accommodate 890 patrons. However, Cattero and Cheryl Wendt, director of marketing for the ESO, said they had expected about 500 to attend. “It was just wonderful,” Wendt said. “For the first time there, in the cold of January, to have a turnout like that, is just excellent.” Cattero said the performance was more than a year in the making. The orchestra and BFAC administration had worked since 2011 to bring the ESO to the Tri-Cities. The Hemmens Auditorium in Elgin serves as the home venue for the ESO. However, the orchestra also regularly performs at the Prairie Center for the Arts in Schaumburg. Representatives of the ESO have stated that they are attempting to grow the Elgin orchestra’s base of support. The Batavia concert was intended to serve as a centerpiece of the orchestra’s outreach efforts in the Tri-Cities. Cattero and Wendt said future performances in Batavia are being discussed. Wendt said performers for the Elgin orchestra “loved” the environment at the Batavia auditorium, and they would welcome a return to the venue. “We’d love to be back,” she said. How many Batavia performances might lie ahead remains unclear. Wendt said it could depend on the outcomes of contract negotiations between the orchestra administration and the performers’ union. But Cattero said the next performance likely would not come until the beginning of the next performance season, which runs from late summer to late spring. He said the BFAC is “very booked up” through July. “So the next available date won’t be until their next performance season,” Cattero said. “But we certainly hope to see many, many more of these performances here.”

IN RECORD TIME Tri-Cities music label spins decade of entertainment

T

he secret to Declassified Records is founder Jon Pomplin’s love of music. The Geneva indie record label is celebrating its 10th anniversary, and Pomplin, who grew up in St. Charles, this year will release “eXperiMentalDelusions.” The CD will feature music composed, performed and recorded by Pomplin, along with guest musicians. This month, he’s been busy reviewing material for the final round of voting for the GRAMMY Awards, as a voting member of the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences.

What categories do you judge? It’s intended for members to pick fields they feel most comfortable voting in. There’s a total of about 28 fields. I usually vote in jazz and rock categories, (and) alternative, if there’s something in there. We vote on them based on their merit as pieces of music — the technical aspect — not whether I like that artist or not. You encourage youth to become student members of the academy? You can’t vote, but you still have access to all the perks the academy provides, (including) the ability to network with other people in your field. One of the reasons, I encourage musicians and students to get involved (is because) the academy (through) charitable organizations helps provide musical instruments and support to music programs in various schools across the country. Thoughts on the state of music today? With the … proliferation of recording software and equipment, it means more and more people are moving into the recording business. A lot of them forget

Find music label What: Jon Pomplin’s Declassified Records is based in Geneva How much: www.declassifiedrecords.com the old adage: Just because you can do something, doesn’t mean you should do something. We’re cutting a new album for BangTower. I just finished a new music video. I shot everything when I was out in Los Angeles for rehearsals.
