THE COLLECTION WINTER 2012
The Bar Method, begun in California by Burr Leonard in 2000, offers a specific workout routine that creates a uniquely lean, firm, sculpted body by combining the muscle-shaping principles of isometrics, the body-elongating practice of dance conditioning, the science of physical therapy, and the intense pace of interval training into a powerful exercise format that quickly and safely reshapes and elongates muscles. Bar Method studio owners are required to teach classes, serve as models for their teachers, and maintain a high quality of teaching at their studios. And Angie Comiteau and Jen Hedrick in Summit do just that. Now that you know the basics of Bar Method, let’s hear what two students at the Summit studio have to say, Victoria Dalena and Kim McManus.
turned 44 and long gone were the days of eating and drinking all I wanted knowing a quick binge diet or intense exercise routine would take it off. I had gained 20 pounds in one year... it was a harsh and unwelcome entry into the land of perimenopausal womanhood! As the mother of triplet boys with a full-time job, I was never very good at fitting exercise into my schedule on a regular basis…plus I absolutely hated to work out. I had tried dozens of exercise classes through the years and dragged myself through the motions each time. Wow, has my outlook changed… I remember walking into my first Bar Basics class a year ago feeling lumpy, large and
Victoria said, “When my first daughter turned one, I was still almost 18lbs over my pre-baby weight. Disappointed and frustrated, my mom gave me a 30-day gift card to Bar. I was determined to make the most of her generous gift - I attended class about 5 times per week during those 30 days. The dedication paid off. At the end of the first 30 days, I had lost 10 pounds. In fact, a friend noticed a change in my arms after the first week. Within a few months, I was back to my pre-baby weight and felt better than ever. I was toned in places I had never been before and more flexible than ever. I had always gone to the gym over the years but never experienced results like this. Those results were all I needed to keep at it.” Kim explains, “My story started during my OB/GYN visit in December 2010. I walked in for my yearly exam, stepped on the scale and stared at the number in horror! I had recently

self conscious. Since joining The Bar Method I actually look forward to my workouts, even attending the 5:30AM classes on a regular basis! I make the time in my schedule to work out as much as I can, and I find the hour flies by. And in the flexibility category I have gone from barely bendable to giving Gumby a run for his money! I didn’t know changing my flexibility was even an option. A year later, 30 pounds lighter and incredibly more flexible, I have made even some of my skinniest jeans look baggy! I have finally found an exercise routine that works for me and that I LOVE to do! But be prepared…You’ll likely have to buy smaller jeans and clothes!” “Yours truly” took a beginner class, and I must say I felt like Kim…nervous, clumsy, apprehensive. But at the end, I was proud of myself for making it through, and the next day, when all my muscles were sore, I knew I had had a comprehensive total-body workout. (Diane Gallo)

Hoboken Farms Decadent & Gluten Free – Tell Your Friends! Hoboken Farms offers what Serious Eats NY calls a “drool-over menu” of hot and cold sandwiches, soups, salads, handmade mozzarella cheese and crusty breads on the weekends. The shop is also stocked with their BIG RED Marinara Sauce that The Wall Street Journal voted best in the country and is carried in Whole Foods and sold exclusively online by Buddy Valastro, “The Cake Boss.” But did you know that almost every item on their menu is created with totally gluten-free ingredients? The Hoboken Farms team understands how serious even a trace amount of gluten can be, so when they opened the Summit shop, it was designed from its inception to be a place where the gluten-free community can celebrate! “All of our meats, cheeses, sauces, dressings, snacks, and soups, are totally free of wheat and gluten,” owner Brad Finkel explained. “All you have to say is ‘gluten free’ and our whole process and the bread we use changes,” he added. Hoboken Farms completely separates the production of all gluten free items by dedicating all equipment in that area to GF (separate gloves, presses, toasters, etc.), and they pack all gluten-free foods with their own colored label and then triple-check all orders to make sure there are no mix-ups with their famous

non-gluten free crusty baguettes and breads. Every day the Hoboken Farms team smiles as gluten free customers get to experience what many say are their first awesome sandwich. Brad explained, “When Colleen first came into the shop, we knew that she was a concerned mother of a gluten free child. We explained our process and all the precautions that we take in order to make sure that all GF sandwiches remain free of contamination. She ordered, and while we made her daughter’s sandwich, she was watching. Afterwards, I wondered if everything went OK with her daughter. The next day we were thrilled to get the following email: ‘Our young daughter has celiac disease and Hoboken Farms was the first time she was able to go into a deli and order a sandwich. She loved it! Thank you for taking the necessary steps for a safe gluten-free food. We will be back!’” (Colleen and Jim) Hoboken Farms caters, delivers and is open 7 days a week from 10:30-3:30. They have free parking in the lot at rear and a rear entrance as well. Hoboken Farms proudly serves carnivores, vegetarians and the gluten-free! Summit Middle School Students Send Greetings to Troops Sixth-grade students at the Lawton C. Johnson Summit Middle School are joined by Guidance Counselor Cristina Martinez, as they hold the letters they wrote to troops serving in the military for Bonds of Courage. The students (l-r) are Pablo Rojas, Emily Kostolansky, Elizabeth Mencke, Christopher Cummings, and Icisys Sadler. Students from LCJ Summit Middle School collaborated with Bonds of Courage to write and collect letters for military personnel. This activity has been done over the years through the Middle School Guidance Advisory Program, which focuses on the Pillars of Character Education. Through the Caring Pillar, sixth graders were able to share their stories, express their gratitude, and send holiday wishes to soldiers stationed both near and far. More than 300 letters were sent.

research cases related to human enhancement under the mentorship of Hastings Center scholars. Students will present and discuss topics such as cosmetic surgery and performance-enhancing drugs. The results of the project will be presented to parents and community members at a public forum and published on a public website. “Without a doubt, the Hastings Center-Kent Place School project is an exciting opportunity for members of our entire school community,” says Karen Rezach, a co-director of the project and director of both The Ethics Institute and of the Middle School at Kent Place. “Our students will be afforded the chance to work one-on-one with some of the finest bioethical research scholars in the world, further develop their ability to articulate a position on a complex issue, and respectfully appreciate the differing points of view of their project colleagues. The greater community will be exposed to biomedical ethics and given the opportunity to broaden their knowledge and perspectives on issues that are most relevant to life in the 21st century.”
Oratory Neighbors Working with Kent Place Neighbors Oratory Prep School seventh and eighth graders partnered with Kent Place Middle School girls to make sandwiches for at-risk and homeless people being served by Bridges, an outreach program in Summit. Cathy Marshall, Oratory’s Campus Ministry Coordinator for the all-boys school, explained, “Our school prepares sandwiches for the Bridges program between
four and six times a year. When Kent Place said they were interested in helping us with this project, we couldn’t have been more pleased.” Both schools’ officials felt this was a perfect way for the pre-teens to do volunteer work as well as get to know their school neighbors in Summit. At the after school activity, the boys and girls made 300 ham and cheese sandwiches and packed bag lunches of fruit, juice, chips and sandwiches for at-risk or homeless people. Bridges serves communities in Irvington, Newark and New York City on their “runs” (delivery days) to those areas where they offer food and warm clothing. For more information about Oratory Prep, visit their website at www.oratoryprep.org. The Hastings Center is an independent bioethics research institute founded in 1969 to address ethical, legal, and policy issues in medicine, health and the life sciences. Much of the Center’s research is in three broad areas: care and decision making at the end of life, public health priorities, and new and emerging technologies. The Ethics Institute at Kent Place School, founded in 2007, fosters the study of ethics and ethical decision-making in primary and secondary school communities and provides ethics resources and programs to Kent Place constituents, independent schools, private schools, public schools and the greater community. For more information please visit www.kentplace.org/ethics.

The assistance is provided by AARP as part of a national Tax-Aide program through its foundation, in conjunction with the IRS. Donating Your Vehicle to SAGE Will Help Area Seniors Do you have a car, boat, motorcycle or RV that is not being used? Perhaps you’ve thought of donating it to a worthwhile cause, but most of the programs are national in scope and the funds are not necessarily going back into your community. If that’s the case, then please consider contacting SAGE Eldercare in Summit about their car donation program. SAGE provides a wide variety of services to elderly residents in Union, Essex, Morris and Somerset counties. The car donations they receive support these services. “SAGE will arrange to have the vehicle towed at no expense, and the donor will be provided with a tax deduction form for their future tax filing. A portion
of funds obtained from this program will be used to replace an outdated vehicle of our own. We provide transportation for some of our home health aides to local residents who use SAGE’s service for in-home aides and our van is in need of replacement,” stated Jessica Rosenzweig, Executive Director of SAGE Eldercare. “Prospective donors may call me at 908-598-5503 for more details, and provide me with the make, model, and year of the vehicle. Through a third-party, the vehicle is sent to auction, and they will provide the paperwork for your future tax filing,” advised Dawn Knill, Director of Development at SAGE. “Vehicles can be picked up from anywhere in the contiguous United States, so if you have relatives across the country, they can contribute to SAGE, too. Additional information on our car donation program, as well as other ways to donate to SAGE, and a full description of our services, are available on our organization’s website.” For more information about SAGE, call 908.273.5550 or visit www.sageeldercare.org. THANK YOU!
from
Here & There….
Joe Steiner
For 29 years you have been our readers and advertisers. From that first black and white edition on craft brown paper, to today’s full color editions, we have tried to provide you with good information about our main service communities, as well as providing a forum for our advertisers to showcase their services and products. Our goals for 2012 are no different than they were during those first few editions. The Chamber is not just “The Collection.” It is an association of businesses who work together with each other, non profits, government agencies, and the community to make the region the best place in New Jersey to live, work and enjoy life. All of this is directed by a uniquely qualified board of directors, who serve the Chamber and the community. During these past two years, the Chamber has been led by Bob Davies (Davies Insurance Management of New Providence). Bob’s enthusiasm for the communities is unbridled. His work ethic to make our communities better is what has made the Chamber succeed during his term. The initial “Tying the Communities Together” awards program was Bob’s dream, and we are all looking forward to seeing it grow and expand in the years to come. Our thanks to Bob and to the folks at Davies who allowed Bob to work with the Chamber. Our new leadership team for 2012 is headed up by John Rosellini of Overlook Medical Center. He is joined by our new Vice Chairs – Bassett Associates’ Beth Welsh (Summit), Bouras Properties’ Kassandra Romas (Civic/Industrial), Cartridge World’s Norm Sobin (New Providence), and Dr. Pat Smith (Berkeley Heights) – and by Treasurer Mort O’Shea of Hilltop Community Bank. All have pledged to work together with our members, staff and community and do “whatever it takes” to make our area great. Two other folks help make this organization and publication the positive force that it is. Diane Gallo has worked with us for the past twenty years, and Annemarie Cahill is the “new kid on the block” celebrating her first anniversary with us this month. Your ideas and suggestions are most welcome. You can reach any of us by phone – 908-522-1700 – or by email – info@suburbanchambers.org. We look forward to a bright and better future! Thanks, Joe Steiner President / Secretary Suburban Chamber of Commerce Page 30
