St. John’s Lutheran Church in Summit, 587 Springfield Ave., invites the community to celebrate 500 years of Lutheran hymns on Sunday, Oct. 20, at 4 p.m. The service of music and commentary about church music heritage will be led by the St. John’s Choir and other visiting musicians.

“We join together to lift up our voices in harmony singing chants, chorales and global music from the past 500 years,” said church spokeswoman Jama Bowman. “The Reverend Blake Scalet offers commentary on the hymns. The St. John’s Choir and guest musicians will offer choral settings and anthems conducted by Christopher Harlow-Jennings, with special organ improvisations by Brian Harlow-Jennings.”

In addition to congregational hymns. the choir will sing a movement from Bach’s Cantata No. 4 Christ Lag in Todesbanden and Albert Becker’s Komm, Heiliger Geist.

All are welcome. A free will offering will be received, and a light reception follows.

St. John’s Lutheran Church is a welcoming congregation that has made a public declaration of its inclusion of LGBTQIA+ people and a commitment to becoming an antiracist church. There is ample parking behind the building, which is ADA-accessible.

To watch livestream services, visit youtube.com/ StJohnsSummitNJ.

On Saturday, Oct. 26, at 3 p.m., St. John’s will host Halloween Hoopla with the New Jersey Youth Chorus, a childfriendly Halloween concert followed by a Trunk-or-Treat in the parking lot. All are encouraged to wear costumes.

The Overlook Auxiliary is hosting its third annual “Art for Overlook” Auction & Cocktail Reception at the Green Village Firehouse on Friday, Oct. 18, from 7:30 to 11 p.m. The event is open to all and provides an opportunity to bring together local artists, community members and healthcare workers to support child and adolescent behavioral health programs at Overlook Medical Center. Tickets are on sale now by visiting oaux.org/events/art-for-overlook.

This year’s event will feature the works of 11 local artists: Jean Best, Lisa Cerny, Kate DeOssie, Cynthia Pareja Dubin, Valerie Flax, Elizabeth Gillin, Cabbar Komek, Jesús Núñez, Don Piloso, Ricardo Roig and Judy Weinstein. The event will also include appetizers, cocktails, live entertainment and an array of additional auction items such as photo packages, dinner parties and show tickets, all donated by the community.

This year’s Art for Overlook will put a spotlight on a cause faced by many parents -- adolescent technology addiction. Dr. James Sherer, an addiction psychiatrist, will be the featured guest speaker at the event, and will address youth technology addiction and the development of Overlook Medical Center's first-ofits-kind outpatient program that will aim to tackle it.

The Overlook Auxiliary is a 501(c)(3) organization that supports Overlook Medical Center with volunteering and fundraising efforts. Founded in 1916, the Overlook Auxiliary has more than 300 active members and has contributed more than $21 million to the Medical Center community since its inception.

For information on the Overlook Auxiliary, visit oaux.org.

Volunteers are the lifeblood of communities, and in Berkeley Heights, New Providence and Summit, various boards and committees are in search of residents to join and contribute to efforts that range from overseeing the installation of public art displays to preservation of historic structures.

“If you are passionate about shaping the future of your community, please consider volunteering on a board or commission,” said Summit Mayor Elizabeth Fagan, M.D.

BERKELEY HEIGHTS

An application is available on the township’s website, and applicants are asked to include any relevant work or other experience pertinent to the committee, commission or task force for which they are applying, which include the Board of Health, Grants Committee, Library Board or the Economic Development Committee.

All applications are reviewed by a three-member panel of township employees.

NEW PROVIDENCE

The borough’s website features descriptions of the various volunteer advisory committees in town, and an application that can be submitted electronically. Some of the groups seeking members include the Public Art Committee, the Planning Board, the Comcast Franchise Renewal Committee

and the New Providence Mental Health Advocacy and Education Committee.

Along with basic identifying information, applicants are asked how long they have lived in New Jersey and in New Providence specifically, are asked to attach a resume and a photo, and to indicate which board, commission or committee interests them most.

Those interested in serving on the fire department, rescue squad or police auxiliary are asked to contact those agencies directly.

SUMMIT

Each November, the mayor and Common Council begin the annual process of reviewing volunteer applications and appointing new members. Terms vary from one to five years of service, and the city keeps applications active for two years.

Among the volunteer groups that seek members are the Affordable Housing Committee, Historic Preservation Commission, Civil Rights Commission and Recycling Advisory Committee.

Details and an application are found on the city’s website. Call the City Clerk’s office at 908-273-6400 with any questions.

Whether you have a penchant for “Paradise by the Dashboard Light,” a love for “Lola” or you’re crazy for Bruce’s “Cadillac Ranch,” an upcoming fundraiser at the Summit Elks Lodge, 40 Maple St., promises an evening full or music, entertainment, food and friendship, all to benefit a local non-profit.

On Thursday, Nov. 14, from 7 to 10 p.m., the Elks will host a karaoke night, with proceeds benefitting the all-volunteer Summit Historical Society, which has as its headquarters the city’s oldest remaining structure, the 1741 Carter House at 90 Butler Parkway.

Admission is a minimum donation of $40, and will include finger food and tunes provided by local DJ Michael Fusco of Summit Soundz. There will be a cash bar.

A QR code is being created for advance ticket sales. For details, visit summithistoricalsociety.org or call the Carter House at 908-277-1747. The museum is open September through June, every Tuesday from 9 a.m. to noon and Wednesdays 1 to 4 p.m. Admission is free. Housed in the archives are materials that include newspapers, maps, Summit High School yearbooks, city directories that date back to 1898, hundreds of local postcards, obituaries and family histories, photos and more.

The Reeves-Reed Arboretum in Summit, 165 Hobart Ave., will host its annual family-friendly Celebrate Fall festival on Sunday, Oct. 20, from 11 to 3. This year’s event marks the Reeves-Reed’s 50 years as a public arboretum, historic garden and educational resource. Activities will include:

• Fall themed games, crafts, activities, a story trail and chalk maze

• Pumpkin patch and spooky trail (children are encouraged to wear costumes)

• Goats grazing in the glacial bowl

• Tenafly Nature Center presentations in the amphitheater

• Wisner House Art Exhibition, Susan Darwin’s “Location Series - The New Jersey Paintings”

• Photo opportunities throughout the gardens and woodland trails

• 50/50 anniversary raffle and 50th anniversary merchandise sale

• Market and food vendors

“Our festival is all about bringing the community together to celebrate the beauty and warmth of the season and to celebrate nature,” said Jackie Kondel, executive director of the arboretum.

Admission for Reeves-Reed Arboretum members and children younger than three is free. Non-members are $10/person. This event has timed entry at 11 a.m., 12 p.m. and 1 p.m., so register for the entry time you prefer, as changes will be based on availability.

For tickets and more information, visit reeves-reedarboretum.org.

The Berkeley Heights Education Foundation (BHEF) will host a Back to the 90’s-themed 30th anniversary celebration and fundraiser from 7 to 10 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 15, at Vintage Tavern, 342 Valley Road, Gillette.

Proceeds from the event will help support administrator, teacher and student-initiated grants to enhance educational excellence in the Berkeley Heights public schools. Guests will enjoy an open bar, music by @Boogie Heights, passed hors d’oeuvres and door prizes. Tickets ($75 per person) are available for purchase at bhedfoundation.org.

This evening will celebrate the teachers and administrators who have brought innovative programs to Berkeley Heights’ public schools through BHEF grants, as well as the generosity of individual donors and business and corporate sponsors that

have made grant funding possible over the past 30 years. For sponsorship opportunities, email the BHEF at bhefnj@gmail.com.

The Berkeley Heights Education Foundation is a volunteerrun organization that operates independently of the Berkeley Heights Board of Education and Parent Teacher Organizations. For almost 30 years, the BHEF has raised funds to enhance education excellence in the Berkeley Heights Public Schools by sponsoring programs that support innovative instruction, strengthen school-community ties, enrich students’ appreciation of the arts and humanities, and augment technology resources throughout the district. For information, visit bhedfoundation.org.

On Saturday, Oct. 19, Community Paper Shredding Day will take place at the Berkeley Heights Municipal Building parking lot, 29 Park Ave., hosted by the township’s Environmental Commission. The event starts at 9 a.m. and runs through 1 p.m., or until the shredding trucks reach capacity.

This is an opportunity to recycle paper that contains confidential material, and will be the last paper shredding event of the year in Union County. Participants are asked to remember:

• Previously shredded paper or wet paper will not be accepted.

• Please bring material in paper bags (no leaf bags, plastic ring binders or clips). Boxes and plastic bags will be returned.

• Limit papers to confidential/sensitive materials only.

• In an effort to accommodate all those wishing to participate, there is a limit of four bags or boxes per car weighing no more than 10 pounds each.

• Residents only, no businesses.

The Berkeley Heights Environmental Commission was established to protect, develop or use natural resources, including water resources, located within the township. The commission is an advisory group with the responsibility to recommend plans and programs to the Planning Board for the development and use of open lands and wetlands.

Once again, we find ourselves in the midst of autumn, a wonderful time of year, especially in Summit. We have settled into our back-toschool routines, are enjoying the last bits of warm weather and we are gearing up for the end of the year rush. There is so much to look forward to right now, but there are a couple of important things to keep in mind this time of year.

With everyone back on the road after the end of summer, it is imperative that we remind ourselves to practice good pedestrian and driver safety. Please remember to put the phone down, both as a pedestrian and driver. Always stay alert and focused on the road.

There are many fun community events coming up, including annual fall favorites like the Haunted Hike, Scream on the Green and the Halloween parade. Subscribe to city notifications to stay informed and get reminders for these and other events throughout the year.

I encourage everyone to get outside and enjoy the many wonderful parks and green spaces throughout Summit, including Martin's Brook Park, Briant Park, Reeves-Reed Arboretum, Park Line, Tiny Forest, Village Green and more. Let's make the most of this beautiful fall weather while we can.

Please reach out with any questions, comments or concerns.

Wishing you and yours a happy and healthy fall season, and I hope to see many of you enjoying the offerings around town!

Mayor Elizabeth Fagan Summit

HAPPY FALL!

We have been very successful in obtaining almost $2 million in grant money from federal, state, county and private sector sources for various projects around the borough. We have been extremely busy working on our infrastructure, including paving 88 roads over the past two years, and replacing major water mains. We are awaiting the Passaic River Bridge project to begin shortly, as the bridge is currently being manufactured. The New Providence Community Pool Bridge is also slated for replacement this fall. A temporary pedestrian bridge will be installed during construction. Also this fall, new lit pickleball courts will be put in next to the tennis courts.

We have many wonderful family friendly fall community events and activities planned. Please visit our borough website for all the details. We welcome and encourage everyone to come and participate!

We are a team effort here in New Providence.

Thank you to our outstanding Borough Council, our dedicated administration, employees and staff, all our very generous businesses, our selfless volunteers and to all of you for making our community such an incredible place to live, work and visit. We look forward to seeing you around town and encourage everyone to please support local and SHOP NP! We wish everyone a safe, happy and healthy fall ahead!

Mayor Al Morgan

New Providence

I invite everyone to join me and members of the Mayor’s Wellness Committee on a Harvest Moon hike on Sunday, Oct. 20, at 2 p.m. Meet at the Passaic River Park parking lot on Springfield Avenue.

We will be led by fitness expert Nerissa Aschoff from the Summit Area YMCA through beautiful trails, where you’ll set mindful intentions and connect with nature with Tammy from Ultra Connected Wellness. Two former Scout leaders, Dennis Toft Sr. and Councilman Manuel Couto, will share the principles of hiking and snacking while utilizing technology for identifying and multitude of flora and fauna via the Seek app.

The walk will cover about three miles, with cinnamon cider served afterwards. Bring a journal and a camera to collect your observations as we explore our surroundings and find out how the forest can sooth your nervous system and nourish your soul.

This event will combine community, conversation and exercise, all of which contribute to overall well-bring. Preparing a snack in nature demonstrates resourcefulness and connects us more deeply to our environment, and celebrating under the full Hunter’s Moon adds a magical touch to the experience.

Please bring any personal medications or allergy remedies, if needed. A registration form and waiver are required, and can be found on the township’s website. Every participant is required to fill out and sign a waiver. We will have extra printed copies on hand for last-minute attendees. All guests younger than 18 must be accompanied by an adult guardian.

Come for the hike, and stay for the connections. We can’t wait to see you there!

Mayor Angie Devanney Berkeley Heights

More than 500 guests were welcomed during the late September grand opening of one of downtown Summit’s newest businesses, Farinolio, at 12 Bank St. As the ribbon was cut by Summit Mayor Elizabeth Fagan, M.D., founders Annette and Francesco Colbertado were joined by staff members who included Laura Orlando, partner and director of private events, and Eden Coetzee, front of the house manager for both the Westfield and Summit stores. Representing the Suburban Chamber of Commerce were

Evelyn Simmons Davis, executive director, and board member May Fridel. “When you treat a store as your home, you want your guests to be welcomed with kindness and a smiling face,” said the Colbertados. “That’s why at Farinolio, we select and treat all our team members -- our brand ambassadors -- with the utmost care and respect. In turn, we expect them to engage with all our guests and answer any questions they have about our food and culture. Positive feedback makes our day, but constructive criticism helps us grow. We strive to receive both. That’s how we define ‘hospitality’ at Farinolio.” The store is open Monday through Saturday 8:30 to 4:30, and the phone number is 908-219-9949.

DOORS TO SANTA CLAUS SHOP GETTING SET TO OPEN

For the 58th consecutive year, the Santa Claus Shop will open its doors to area families to provide complimentary holiday shopping. The shop serves more than 1,500 lowincome family members and senior citizens from Summit, New Providence and Berkeley Heights.

This year’s Santa Claus Shop will be held at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Summit. Families will be offered shopping hours by invitation only during the first week of December.

The Santa Claus Shop is chaired by Summit residents Jen Adel, Amanda Darnowski, Jenny Groves and Corinne White and co-chaired by Stephanie Phiebig, Hilary Reilly, Teresa Solano, Jessica Whitehorne and Roseanne Wilson. The shop exists solely on donations and volunteers. With monetary donations from area residents, local organizations

and businesses, the Santa Claus Shop can purchase the gifts that allow less fortunate neighbors to experience the joy of holiday giving without financial burden.

To keep the holiday spirit alive for local residents in need, the Santa Claus Shop chairwomen ask for members of the community to consider giving. Checks can be made payable to SHIP, with Santa Claus Shop noted on the check’s memo line, and mailed to the Santa Claus Shop, P.O. Box 119, Summit 07902. The ability to make an online donation is available at summitsantaclausshop.com.

After 44 years of serving local snow enthusiasts, Summit Ski & Sport is closing its doors.

“The building has been sold,” said owner Paul Phillips, “and our lease has ended. It’s time.”

He said how grateful he and his wife, Mary, are “for the memories here” over more than four decades, and that they thank the Hadley brothers for helping them get started. Mr. and Mrs. Phillips founded the business while still in their 20s.

“Not only did we have so many great full-time employees,” he noted, “I am extremely proud to have been able to give so many kids – more than 100 of them – their first jobs.” He said his retirement plans including keeping his wholesale business for the time being, spending more time at the Phillips’ home in North Carolina, taking long walks with their dogs and hanging out as often as possible with grandchildren.

Another source of pride he described is that Summit Ski & Sport has had second and even third generations of families come to purchase their snow gear and have it serviced.

“I am blown away by the reaction we are getting from people when they hear we’re closing the store,” Mr. Phillips said. “People have come in and teared up when they’re talking to me. Their feelings have been so heartfelt, and they’ve even come in to share memories and photos with us.”
