We survived our second issue!

Yes, we survived. Although.... barely. I believe we crossed the finish line with a combination of head colds, sore backs, and twitching eyes. You laugh, but it’s true. This magazine is a labour of love in every possible way.

We strategize, we plan, we pound the pavement and we grab take-out when we are pushing for the proverbial finish line.

LETTER from the EDITOR KRISTI NELSON As this issue heads to print, we are approaching the holidays. Some of my favourite holiday memories in Revelstoke include building massive snowmen in the yard, and evening cross country skiing under the lights in the sparkly snow at Mt. MacPherson. My husband, Brendan, and I once were lost on Mt. MacPherson on Christmas Eve afternoon, going in circles (we were worried, because it was our job to pick up the turkey on the way home. Oops! We did make it in time!) we kept missing a sign, or, looking back now, perhaps it was just covered in snow!

I also remember one Christmas Eve in Revelstoke in the 90’s when, strangely, there was zero snow. It wasn’t until very late that evening, when suddenly the gigantic, trademark Revelstoke sized flakes started falling from the sky, lit up by the streetlights.

Revelstoke is truly a magical place to spend the holidays, I find it extremely relaxing! We enjoy a specific regimen: eat, ski, drink, sleep, repeat.

This winter, I hope you are inspired to find satisfying moments in the every day - flip through and see which experience appeals to you!

We’ve compiled a good mix of cozy and crazy, adventure and rest, pertinent information and inspired light relaxation.

Since interviewing local singing sensation Aza a few weeks ago, her first music video was released, she officially signed her record deal, and her dreams are becoming a reality. When I was her age, I would have done anything to be in her shoes! Keep your eye on this rising star, she’s sure to shine bright. Read more about Aza on page 26 and check her out on Instagram @a.zamusic We’ve kept the well-received “36 hour” itinerary themes, adapting them this time for families and “tribes” of all kinds visiting or enjoying quality time in Revelstoke together.

For those who would like to spend more than 36 hours in Revelstoke, we put together some real estate market analytics for you.

We learned a lot, were surprised a few times, and aimed to present our findings in a “just the facts” sort of way that makes the data easy to understand - hopefully it brings clarity to a somewhat complex marketplace. We appreciate feedback and look forward to hearing yours.

How Fashion Survives in a Mountain Town

#KeepingWithTheTrends When Diane and Stephen Bull bought Style Trend Clothiers nine years ago, Revelstoke was a very different place than it is today, and so was the fashion industry. Back then , Style Trend was still the trendiest place to shop for clothing in Revelstoke, however, “Revelstoke was behind. Trends would hit Vancouver first, then the next season it would make it’s way into the interior, then after that - Revelstoke. Now with social media, we all have immediate access to all the latest trends,” says Diane. Instagram has especially influenced how people buy, as clothing is not only featured but usually paired and styled to create a look, creating a sense of urgency; I’m available now, come get me... “Where’d she get that? It’s no longer a mystery. You can find out, without asking, and buy it, today.”

Customers do just that, whether in-store, or online.

As Revelstoke has changed over the past few years, so has the local clientele. “The culture in our little mountain town is very much quality over quantity with all things, and clothing is no different. We are able to bring in quality pieces that will LAST as opposed to so much of the ‘fast fashion’ (yes, the f word) that you see in the city,” says Diane.

#WeLoveLocal “Sourcing truly local labels is a challenge there really is no textile industry in Canada - I don’t think people realize how very little is actually made in Canada, but we do carry a number of local, Canadian brands,” says Diane. BRUNETTE is a customer favourite, and Diane says; “Customers are always excited to hear the full story behind BRUNETTE; and we are proud to have known Miriam, the creative genius behind the brand, long well before Brunette was the monster is is today.”

Gentle Fawn is another customer favourite, which customers are often quite surprised to hear is also BC based.

#UniqueBoutique In a small town, if someone has the same shirt as you, you’ll notice quickly, which is a challenge for retailers! “We try to strike a balance between not overstocking the same item, such as dresses, and being able to meet the demand for pieces such as the BRUNETTE pullovers - as everyone wants one!” The feedback from customers - who Diane says range in age from high schoolers to retirees and one of the benefits of doing business in a small town is that you truly get to know their customers, and therefore anticipate their needs. “We handpick each and every piece that we order every season - most of the time with a specific customer in mind.” We love that we support independent brands, whether they are the smaller local lines or more mainstream lines based in the US or Europe.”

STEP 1 Spritz thickening tonic throughout hair brush through to ensure even distribution.

The Knot Dr brush is a great detangle tool for dry or wet hair.

STEP 2 Blow dry product into dry or wet hair.

Point nozzle down the hair shaft to reduce frizz and increase shine.

Create a soft parting by brushing straight back and letting the hair softly split. Break into two sections, hold a section in each hand. Pass a piece of hair from the bottom of one section over and across to the other hand. Hands never move and you are just passing hair back and forth over top of the braid. Keep tension firm.

STEP 4 Tap hair potion (never shake this product!) into middle of the braid and massage in.

This will help expand the braid, while locking it in place.

Throw on a toque and you are ready to go!

Tuck braid under and in, secure with bobby pins. Place your favourite clip, or a bun pin at the base of braid. Ready for an evening out!

AZA [ay-za]

[ “A melody or set of lyrics just comes to me” ] Four words came

to mind after speaking with local emerging artist Aza Deschamps: quiet confidence, big voice. Aza has graced local stages; performing at Luna Fest, in local venues and in Grizzly Plaza.

You may have seen her play the sax with the RSS band, or perhaps you were present at her very first performance 7 years ago, when she played the lead in a school play, catching the attention of other audience members who encouraged her to pursue singing, which she soon did.

Local mentors provided inspiration and support; her singing teacher, Joanne Stacey as well as Steve Smith. “They have inspired me to keep going and been supportive and had my back. They understood that a singer needs support and helped normalize becoming a young performer.

They believed in me, and showed me that my dreams were within reach.”

Lately, Aza has been performing less as she spreads her wings, recording her first album of her original content in Vancouver with Jump Attack Records in collaboration with Blue Light Studios. When asked about her songwriting process, she says, “A melody or set of lyrics just comes to me - usually at inopportune times - so I jot them down into a file in my phone. When I get a chance to sit down at the piano I find chord progressions, just using trial and error, playing it over and over again, fixing it and fixing it until I’m proud of it.”

She adds: “It’s kind of a science. It’s different for every person. For me I need to do both the lyrics and melody at the same time otherwise I lose track of where I’m going.” She sent me a copy of her yetunreleased first single, Strangers, and I was blown away by her voice, maturity and talent. “This song was co-written by Cole Blakely, and it’s about dealing with having a friend or significant other who just flakes out and lets you down. It’s a picture of becoming strangers - after knowing someone so well.” On shooting her first two music videos in Vancouver - which has to be a surreal experience for any 16 year old girl - she says: “It was incredible - I had such an amazing group backing me up. It was one of those moments when I thought, wow, this could actually happen. It’s a huge step.”

Being in a small town has given her a taste of fame early; she is often recognized in Revelstoke, which motivates her further, and she says being a teenager without anonymity in a small town keeps her out of trouble…

It seems the sky is the limit for this shining star. I asked Aza about her dreams. She wishes to make a living doing something she loves - reaching people with her music. “As long as I can inspire people, that’s what I’m in this for. Music has helped me, so I want to make music that will help other people.”

With her first single “Strangers” just released - you can expect her full album out by April 2019.

A Quiet Night In

To quote one of this issue’s lovely contributors, Dr. Theresa Camozzi, “Sometimes self care looks like paying bills and buying broccoli. Sometimes it’s reading a great book snuggled under all the blankets in the house.” Theresa had this as her status update about a year ago, and it has stuck with me. Whether it’s a night when you’re celebrating winter, ignoring it, or enjoying some downtime after hitting the slopes (or the bars!) too hard while visiting, here’s a quick recipe for a delicious quiet night in. Something we all need from time to time.

There’s a reason I listen to The Moth podcast within hours of its release (twice a week). I love its wide variety of relatable - yet at times inconceivable - true stories of the human experience. FINDING SELF in unexpected moments

Most of our pleasure comes from the unexpected twists and turns our paths take. Falling into the trap of thinking that completing our goals will give us a sense of being full and joyful is all too common. Rather, it is experiencing moments as they unfold in front of us that will have us looking back on a rich and full life.

Staying present to life in seemingly mundane moments gives us fascinating experiences that lie just beyond our regular existence, giving us unexpected opportunities to greet different facets of ourselves. Consider your life’s most fulfilling, hilarious, inspiring, joyful, and interesting experiences. How many were planned, and how many of them could you not have planned if you’d tried?

For most of us, the best parts of life are entirely unexpected.

Thirty years ago I found myself sitting quietly by the window, watching the snow fall in the wee hours of the morning. The quiet from outside seeping in through the windows and settling in everywhere it could touch, the snow coming down like a thick blanket. In the blink of an eye, a snowy owl swooped down past the window. Less than a metre away, the snowy owl’s full wingspan glided past me, my whole body coming alive in its presence. The world paused as this moment of winter magic imprinted itself on me forever. An irreplaceable moment that only happened because of listening to my quiet inner voice telling me to sit and observe.

On that quiet morning I was introduced to the wonder and awe that could happen in a moment of being present to the unfolding of life. That rare moment of wildness outside my window would have been enough for a lifetime, but last winter another scene unfolded outside my window. Working late, I glanced up to see a bear walking down the road. Quickly I ran to get my family to show them, and as we gathered by the window we saw not one but three bears taking a midnight midwinter stroll. In the stillness and wildness of the moment, I was shaped by the magnificence of Revelstoke’s more wild residents. I saw myself in the wilderness outside my window and took it as an invitation to allow more mystery, love, and awe into my life. It was an invitation to look up from my work, to step into the beauty of the world, to give it attention, and to be part of it.

The invitation to be part of life is always there, with us, beckoning us forward. The longer I’ve been living this life, the more I realize that right under the ordinary, the extraordinary is waiting quietly. Presence is both at the top of the mountain and looking out from a window. Light is both in the fire and in the moonlight rippling across fresh snow. Love is in the embrace and in the quiet moments of solitude. Awe is in the snowy owl and in the family of bears.

CHOCOLATE CHUBBIES RECIPE BY SARAH MICKEL

Prep: 45 mins Makes: 2-3 dozen

INGREDIENTS l l l l l l l l l l l

8 squares of semi-sweet baking chocolate 3 squares of unsweetend baking chocolate 300 grams semi-sweet chocolate chips 300 grams white chocolate chips 1/2 cup butter 3 eggs 2 teaspoons vanilla extract 1 cup white sugar 2/3 cups unbleached flour 1 cup toasted chopped pecans 1 cup toasted chopped walnuts

DIRECTIONS Using a double boiler, melt the all of the chocolate squares and beat until smooth. Do not boil the water beneath the chocolate pan. Add butter to chocolate and stir until combined. Beat the eggs and sugar and vanilla on high speed for 3 minutes.

Combine flour, nuts and chocolate chips in a mixing bowl.

Add egg mixture to melted chocolate and stir well. Pour chocolate mixture over the dry ingredients and mix well.

Using a small spoon scoop small amounts of cookie dough onto a parchment lined baking sheet. Bake for 10 to 12 min at 325 F. Once cooled use a plastic squeeze bottle or table spoon to drizzle melted white chocolate over each cookie.

We’ve been honing our skills for when the Zombies come. Our team is comprised of medical doctors, nurses, and a guy who has his Master’s in War. We’ve got hunters, builders, fishermen, and food preservation enthusiasts. I’m relying on my ability to Euro-hem a pair of jeans to ensure my future survival. Denim is, and always will be king.

We’re not weird. It doesn’t have to be a zombie apocalypse. It can be (from least to most plausible) nuclear, viral, or when we get too tired of being around people.

When we first started dating, my then-boyfriend hurled a dead grouse and some foraged mushrooms at my feet, along with a barely discernible grunt that included the words “stir fry”.

Thirteen years later, we are immersed in a lifestyle that is largely based around living off of the land and sourcing our own local food.

It’s a multi-family endeavour. In the winter, we ski. After that, we scurry to stock our freezers and shelves. These hobbies provide balance in this era of technological revolution—what could keep us more grounded to our place on earth than the fundamental act of feeding ourselves? Look no further than the squirrels that stash their proverbial nuts for the winter. That’s us, except we’re stashing elk tenderloin, canned peaches, tomatoes and salsas, deer sausage, dried apples and jerky made from the meat of a mountain goat. We get together for big multi-family dinners and we share everything that we have hunted/grown/canned/foraged. These are our people.

One group project involved raising fifty chickens and processing them, two of which were served at Thanksgiving this year. We imported piglets and raised them on a diet of fresh vegetable trim from local restaurants and remnants of the food recovery program. The kids would climb the fence and watch Kevin Bacon devour his treats. Not a single morsel of the pork went to waste—the fat was mixed with bear meat and turned into breakfast sausage. Our friends made Guanciale, an Italian bacon-style cured meat made from pig’s cheeks. It was delicious alongside the eggs from my other friends’ chicken coop and some toasted homemade bread slathered with raspberry jam (the kids made it from the berries that they’d picked from the yard).

We wrapped the bacon around the elk tenderloin that my husband successfully hunted just a few kilometers from our front door, and served it with chanterelles that were picked that same day.

A fresh fish pulled from the Columbia River by a six-year-old boy is delicious when wrapped in foil and put on the barbecue.

We love great food and we love spending time with our friends and families while staying connected to the outdoors. Combining these pastimes has created a fulfilling and social lifestyle. There are countless opportunities to teach patience, preparedness, and of course, the rewards of providing for oneself. Isn’t that the goal of parenthood? To instill in our children a sense of adventure, social responsibility, and confidence?

Our kids are seven and nine years old. They’ve helped butcher a deer before wrapping it in brown paper for the freezer. They can gut a fish and they take great pride when their catch is being served.

They’ve gained a healthy respect for where their food comes from. By spending time together with a common community goal, we hope to keep our kids from rotting in front of the TV and turning into Zombies. Because we all know that Zombies will inevitably lead to the next apocalypse.

Every winter, strengthening the immune system comes in at the top of my patients’ health-goal lists. As a Naturopathic Doctor, I have plenty of tools to help them, but my secret weapon in the fight against viral infection is in the very air of Revelstoke, and it’s free for the taking. When you breathe in here, you smell the perfume of thousands of trees- and that signature scent carries some recently studied molecules that impact the immune system in a profound way.

Revelstoke owes its gorgeous abundance of trees to the climate of the Interior Wet Belt - an inland rainforest. According to Parks Canada, this area has the greatest diversity of conifers (evergreen trees) in Canada. Armed with a tree identification guide, you might find cedar, hemlock, pine, fir, spruce, and larch. I’ve even spotted Yew trees in the forests near Halcyon Hotsprings.

Conifers are special for many reasons, but I’m writing about them today because they effect our immune system through a group of essential oils they produce called phytoncides (pronounced “fie-ton-sides”). The best known are alpha-pinene, beta-pinene, and limonene.

According to a Forest-Bathing article on Medscape, the phytoncides found in forests are anti-inflammatory, anti-tumour, and brain protective. Studies have shown that exposure to these molecules (through forest bathing and through essential oil inhalation) increases the activity of a very bad-ass sounding immune cell: the Natural Killer Cell.

Natural Killer cells are responsible for detecting and eliminating both tumour cells and cells infected with viruses. That means they help to prevent both cancer and the common cold. Simply being in the forest increases Natural Killer cells for a week or more. Add that to the other benefits of forest bathing (decreased stress, more creativity, better problem solving, and improved mood) and suddenly spending time in the softly diffused light under the fragrant, evergreen branches seems like the best health boost we’ve got.

If you’re hoping to give your immune system an edge this winter, grab a friend and your boots, snowshoes or skis and head out into wild, green places. The research supports what the people of Revelstoke have known for generations: the forest is good medicine.

Cedar has a long history of spiritual significance and is used in many sacred ceremonies. Use this oil to calm, cleanse and protect.

SPRUCE

This sweet, grounding, earthy oil can be difficult to find, but is said to ease respiratory problems, boost the immune system, and support the adrenal glands.

Reach for this comforting essential oil to uplift your mood, improve mental clarity and cleanse the air. *Do not use any essential oils without consulting with a healthcare provider.

Market Update a closer look at local real estate

How’s the market in Revelstoke these days? The answer varies widely depending on who you talk to. Is it a buyer’s market, or a seller’s? The perspective changes, depending on who is trying to buy and who is trying to sell, and finding true comparables for any property can be difficult. We thought we’d crunch some numbers to get some clarity, and talk to someone at the heart of Revelstoke’s real estate scene.

We asked local realtor Tyler Bradbury of Re/max Revelstoke about his take on the current market and he told us that lack of inventory is slowing down the pace of Revelstoke’s market.

“Six months ago to a year ago, we were seeing bidding wars. We had a seller’s market for about two years, but now, buyers have time to shop and can negotiate again.” Where are the buyers coming from? “Sixty percent of my clients are 30-somethings, moving from Kelowna or Vancouver, many working remotely.

Revelstoke’s schools and early childhood education programming are big draws.”

How about those rumours about houses selling over the internet, sight unseen? “Yes, it does happen, but not often. There were two deals like that last month, but that’s rare.” We’re curious, who is leaving?

“Many retired folks are looking to move to the Okanagan; the changes and growth Revelstoke has experienced over the past few years are not for everyone.”

Supporting the findings of a report submitted to Revelstoke’s city council by city staff in August, Bradbury agrees that there is a particular need for housing other than single-family detached; “Row townhouses would be a great fit. Many want to invest in this community and are held up because they don’t want a single family home and there currently aren’t options.”

Q: How long does it take to build a house from start to finish in Revelstoke these days?

A: From the moment the clients purchase the land to build on to arriving at end goal… the move-in date… well, it varies widely depending on the complexities of their plan and the level of finishing. However, when all goes smoothly, plans can be drawn up in 50 – 100 hours, and the building of an average 2000 square foot home in Revelstoke has been taking us 6 – 10 months.

Q: What is the current minimum cost per square foot to build a new home in Revelstoke?

A: It depends on your level of finishing - particularly when it comes to kitchens and bathrooms - but it can be done for $180 - $225 per square foot.

Q: The City of Revelstoke’s Director of Development recently reported to council that the city has a strong need for more attached housing how would you like to see that come about?

A: Building higher density projects in Revelstoke is something we are really excited about, especially considering the need, and the impact it can have on residents. A sense of community, and, let’s face it, cost sharing. We have some great design ideas, and are optimistic that the city’s current zoning rules will soon evolve to make them possible.

It really depends on when we start the process, as there are other factors that affect the project that are outside of our control, such as weather, trade and supplier availability, and permitting. The building permit processing time varies, but we are pleased to have the fastest permit approval on record, less than 2 weeks! The city commended us, calling it the best building permit submission they had received in years.

Keeping projects on schedule is key, and with the amount of snow we get, the short building season is a challenge! Our firm has embraced the advancement of technological resources so we have project management system that allows our client’s to see everything.

Q: Are there any trends you’d like to help bring to market in Revelstoke?

A: Yes, absolutely, and it’s a big part of why Nathan sits on the Economic Development Commission and Advisory Planning Commission - to influence policy in a way we believe will benefit our city.

Given our hot rental market and demand for vacation rentals, carriage houses could be great fit for many houses on deeper - in some cases 200 feet deep - city lots in the downtown area, and benefit residents as revenue generators. Narrower infill-style homes are another concept we’d love to introduce. On the minds of many is the new Net Zero energy efficiency rules introduced as part of the 2018 BC Building Code. Homeowners are making plans today to be ready for tomorrow, and we are seeing that with both new builds and renovations.

Our system provides a great deal of transparency and value for our clients, tracking where the project is every step of the way, from budget, schedule, selections, and more. It literally counts the number of screws.

Q: Why do your clients choose to build?

A: Generally it is either because they want something fresh and new, or they are having trouble finding the exact features they want in an existing home on the market such as layout, quality of construction, or energy efficiency.

Q: What are the some of the trends you are seeing in terms of living spaces?

A: We work with an incredibly practical and mindful local designer who gets to the crux of how people live while designing their new home, and building around this takes precedent over traditional aesthetics in many cases. It’s about how you live, what is important to your daily routine, instead of cookie cutter designs that don’t address your needs. Low maintenance and energy efficient systems are driving factors as we see clients who want to enjoy Revelstoke and know that their house

Mountain of Opportunities

If the mountains had feelings, I suspect Mt. MacPherson might feel a bit understated.

Across the river, Mt. Mackenzie hosts famous socialites and skiers alike, is host to the Mountain Coaster and a growing network of hiking trails and is the darling of “must-ski” articles in the likes of Forbes Magazine. Competing with Mt. Revelstoke is not a lot of fun either - with National Park status, a smooth road up to the summit giving locals and tourists from all over the globe unprecedented access to the alpine.

Often photographed and painted, Mt. Begbie is one of few mountains in North America that provides a view of a glacier from a town below. Mt. Cartier’s distinct mountain top towers high into the sky challenging anyone brave enough to climb it.

And then there is MacPherson… providing a physical backdrop to our community.

No glacier, nor a distinct mountaintop, yet arguably providing more outdoor opportunities throughout the year than any other mountain in our area.

Not convinced? Name an active outdoor activity and there is a good chance you can enjoy it in the MacPherson area. In the summer one can bike over 40 km of mountain bike trails in the expansive trails network in addition to countless running and hiking trails. Begbie Bluffs allow rock climbers can test their skills climbing the numerous crags in the forest. It is home to the warmest lake in Revelstoke, Beaver Lake. In the winter, the mountain becomes a hotbed for cross country skiers, snowshoes and back country skiers, with each trailhead within 10 km from town.

6+ km of cross country ski trails are lit at night for a tranquil experience in nature, funded by Columbia Basin Trust, Columbia Shuswap Regional District, and the City of Revelstoke Tourism Infrastructure Fund.

Mt. MacPherson has been somewhat of a well-kept secret, but perhaps not for long, as, believe it or not, MacPherson is about to get even better. This summer, the Revelstoke Nordic Ski club embarked on a three-phase capital improvement project.

The first was the construction of a second parking lot, providing an additional 50 stalls (now has capacity for 150 vehicles), followed by a ski stadium expansion to increase capacity to host club and race events. 750 meters of new sprint trails and a terrain park now offer youth and young at heart an opportunity to improve their skills by moving over technical features.

The second phase will allow Revelstoke to host higher level Nordic events with of several distance race loops in close proximity to the lodge. The last phase is the construction of a scenic connector trail. This gently climbing 1.5 km trail provides easier access to the outer trail network.

At all times of the year, Mt. MacPherson is ready for you to play and explore.

Sledding has long been one of Revelstoke’s top winter activities. Sledding actually put Revelstoke on the map long before RMR was a thing. We watch them arrive year after year. THE REAL RUMPUS ROOM

Sitting down at the Distillery in town, I came upon our local beer; Rumpus.

As I savoured my sip I asked Fred, its creator, “Why the name Rumpus?”

“Well… it’s how I see Revelstoke, as a rumpus room.” Ha, I thought, great idea… then as I wandered home later, I thought about it more and more.

Is Revelstoke simply a glorified rumpus room? A place where kids with too much energy and excitement get sent to play? Or where families head to tire their kids out?

When I think back to my rumpus room as a kid, I realize how great a zone it was. We had all sorts of toys, board games, an Atari 64… Sure, our parents sent us there when we were in trouble, but it was such a great space to entertain myself and my siblings.

Endless days were spent imagining, adventuring in my mind, playing, pillow fighting. I remember skiing my lego guy all across the couch, hitting huge airs with him and shredding off imagined mountain tops.

Now as adults we are mature enough to understand our desires, our energies and perhaps we realize that the other rooms in this house are not for us, and the Rumpus room is our happy place. So now instead of being sent here, we decide on our own, and bring our families to either visit on vacation or move here permanently.

What is incredible with our adult rumpus room is not only do we get to decide on the toys, but by choosing Revelstoke, we are deciding on what the room is. It’s the rumpus room with no walls and no restrictions, big mountains, wild rivers, rainforest and alpine lakes. Immense natural beauty around every corner. The room transforms with the seasons, warm summer days, snowy winters, blooming springs, leaf strewn falls. It’s the ever changing, always engaging, fully rewarding playground.

As fall leaves, and winter descends on us, our rumpus room is changing. It’s time to put away the summer toys, and dust off the winter ones. Each family, or person sent to this room, has choice on what they will indulge in this winter. Be it getting their new snowmobile, waxing their new snowboard, or getting their first set of skins, it is an exciting time. It’s guaranteed to be a winter full of exhaustion from activities, moments of pure excitement as our games go full throttle and escapism into games.

The room is going to look very different covered in white, and we will all be expending our endless energies in our own exciting ways.

There is no doubt, Revelstoke is our rumpus room, and I have become that Lego guy I played with as a kid. I have sent myself forever up to the playroom to get rid of my excess energy, and I have brought my family with me.

RMR :Where to Start

With 1713 meters of lift accessed vertical, 19 runs and 4 alpine bowls, where to start on RMR is a big question; and you have how many days to enjoy it?

When it comes to tackling RMR, if you’re short on time, it’s good to have a plan.

Luckily, local backcountry ski legend Greg Hill a.ka. the man who once climbed and skied two million vertical feet in a year, was willing to lend us a hand, sending you and your crew in the right direction; straight down the hill, of course.

Watch the conditions...

If the snow is amazing top to bottom, and you love long runs, ski top to bottom, it takes forever. Snow Rodeo top to bottom is unbelievable when it’s perfectly groomed. It really can be such a fun run.

When it gets icy, or conditions aren’t stellar at the bottom at the end of the season, I download. I’m 42. I’m allowed to. It took me years to accept that sometimes, a download is the way to go.

“Let’s start by talking about some reasonable goals...”

I once did as many laps of the Stoke chair as Icould in one day. I think my number was 38. If you get in 20 runs, you are maximizing your day.

Beginner “Um, are there easy runs?”

For kids? I’m a father of two, and my suggestion is that 8 runs should sufficiently wear your kids out. On this hill, with kids, if you want to do more than that, you will either need some great bribery or be prepared for some serious whining. This is supposed to be fun, guys.

First time taking the kids up to RMR? Starting kids off - the first thing you want to do to is take away the intimidation; so head to the Last Spike and Greenhorn. If the kids aren’t ready to head to the stoke chair or all the way to the top, just take them to the top of the gondola and do runs like Last Spike, Feller Buncher, or Woolly Bully.

If your kids are a little older, consider sending them up on their own, but first Familiarize them with the resort. Two way radios are probably the best way to communicate. Cell phones work in most areas on the south side, but the North Bowl has areas with no service.

My 11 & 13 year olds have been set free, with parameters.

Although my kids can ski anything, if they are on their own, they stay on the Stoke Chair or Ripper.

Intermediate “I’ve got this” Start out your day at the Ripper chair. Beat the crowds to the powder and enjoy warming up on the mellower, quieter, shorter runs below the alpine. Cruise Burn Down, Blow Down and Chopper. The groomers do a great job in that area and you can enjoy the glades.

Looking for an area to build confidence as a skier? The Tasty glades up top are perfect. My wife loves to ski this area.

Advanced “This is a piece of cake” Start your day with the glades on the front side. Iron Gladen, Still Life and the Tally Ho. When the North Bowl opens, head there and drop into Sweet Spot. Gracias Ridge is great too.Vertigo Ridge is really good for intermediates, but just watch out for the one gully at the end! One of the best areas is the Sub Peak, and the best run once you get there is called Discipline, but you have to earn this one with a solid bootpack.

Friday evening - arrival Check in! Grab some dinner downtown before enjoying a group activity of some sort. A local hockey game offers the most authentic small Canadian mountain town experience (check the schedule on page 48), but if the boys are on the road, consider an evening at Peak Axe Throwing. If you just can’t wait until tomorrow morning to feel the spray of snow on your face, head up to the base of RMR - where Turtle Creek Tube Park awaits.

Saturday daytime

Are you here for the hill? Say no more, check out some suggested itineraries of ski runs on page 70, and be on your way.

Not a skier? Consider renting snowshoes at Mt.MacPherson for a peaceful yet exhilarating way to enjoy the season. Not feeling it? Check out local shops, cafés and bars; make your own little progressive pub-crawl through Revelstoke’s delightful, historic downtown.

evening Dinner

downtown will set you up nicely for an evening to remember. A combined sushi and karaoke experience can be had at Kawakubo (private rooms - call ahead for Reservations). If a steak or burger is more your thing after a long day at the hill, with its three separate bars and 2 menus at the 112 and River City, the Regent is a traditional hotspot for a night out in Revelstoke. Either way, you will likely find yourself making your way down the street to Traverse Night Club by the end of the night. Need to fuel up again before bed? Nico’s pizza is open late.

Sunday Back to the hill before taking off? Yes, we get it. Not so much?

Book in for a massage or spa treatment at Feather and Stone to relax (at RMR - book online through the mind body app). Stock up for the drive home at La Baguette, where you can find warm drinks, treats, smoothies and wraps perfect for recapping the weekend on the car ride home. where to stay: Check out The Stoke Hotel - A funky, newly refurbished riverside spot to hang your hat featuring great common spaces (read: central courtyard hot tub), free breakfast and shuttle service to downtown.

Revelstoke is a winter wonderland for children, and it would be easy to entertain them by spending an entire weekend just building snow forts.

The mild temperature and excessive snowfall make it the perfect playground for outdoorsy kids. Just don’t dress them all in white.

Friday evening - arrival

Check in and get cozy! Order dinner in from Padrino’s pizza if it’s late, or if you’re in the mood to explore, grab dinner up at RMR at the Rockford, where you can also take the kids tubing into the evening at the base. Helmets suggested!

Saturday

Hitting the hill is a popular draw to Revelstoke, and if you’re headed up to RMR be sure to read Greg Hill’s tips for success on page 70, but there’s still plenty to do if downhill is not your family’s passion. Snowshoeing or cross country skiing along with a scenic boat ride (Galena Bay Ferry, free of charge) sound good? A quick side trip from Revelstoke; drive down Highway 23 to Halcyon Hot Springs for a dip in the hot springs followed by dinner at the delicious Kingfisher restaurant on site, all with gorgeous lake views. We suggest stopping off at Mt. MacPherson (7 km south along the way) to snowshoe or x-country ski first; the hot springs are that much more enjoyable after some fresh air and a workout.

Beginners, head to the Mickey Olsen Loop; a 3.2 km green run. If it’s late in the day, don’t worry, overhead lights come on from dusk to 9:30 pm, and the snow truly sparkles. Other lit trails for evening adventures include Evelyn’s Choice, Dynamite, Titan and the terrain park.

If your crew is more advanced, the main loop (4.4 km total) first takes you up 2.5 km to the Ole Sandberg cabin. Shortly after, a fork in the road will - if you dare - take you down log roller and log lane to hydro hill, taking beaver lake road to BCIT to road ramble, back to the parking lot (this route gives you over 9 km of varied terrain featuring twists, turns, hills and long straight stretches in the thick woods). Or, you can complete the Main Loop.

Saturday night

Downtown, the Taco Club and Village Idiot will give the kids a sense of the vibe of a ski town.

For entertainment, Revelstoke’s newest addition to the apres-ski entertainment scene is “Revelstuck” Escape Room. The Cabin has 8 lanes of bowling, and it’s cute, and it’s licensed. The Roxy Theatre in Grizzly Plaza is historic (plays one show per week). Want to chill in the room with a movie? Pick up some treats at La Baguette or cupcakes from Pip & Dex (available inside The Annex on First Street West).

10 Different Ways...

To Spend Sweet Summer Days

Overwhelmingly, the comment from newer Revelstoke residents who first came for the snow is that now they love the summers here even more than the winters. What’s not to love? Lush forests, warm temperatures, private swimming holes, and wildflowers visitors come from all over the world to see are just some of what awaits.

Ideas for Days Spent Locally: • A Summer Day at Revelstoke Mountain Resort can be spent in many ways; like hiking the sub peak if you have an appetite for seeing snow in July; take the gondola up as far as it will take you, then climb up to the sub peak for 360 degree views of the mountains, river and valleys. It’s amazing how different the view is compared to the top of the Stoke chair. Less aggressive hike options are at the top of the gondola, or just ride the pipe, play disc golf, have lunch with a view. Paragliding is also on the menu.

• Flower gazing on Mount Revelstoke; either as part of a hike or bike ride, or just driving up to the summit and wandering around a bit.

• Spend some time at the Three Valley Gap Ghost Town and lake, or reignite childhood nostalgia with a visit to the Enchanted Forest. Open summer months beginning in May, located minutes west of Revelstoke on Hwy 1.

• Beach Day - local favourites are Blanket Creek, Williamson’s Lake, and Martha Creek…

• Take a Dam tour; one of Revelstoke’s top rated attractions. An educational and eye opening experience, with fantastic views (you get to go inside and take an elevator to the top), and you can feel good about making sure your kids learned something important during summer vacation!

• Waterfalls are abound in Revelstoke and there are several hikes which will take you to these special places which feed your soul! Begbie Falls is an easy, family friendly one, or head Akolkolex Falls for more of an adventure.

• Revelstoke offers ample opportunity for all types of summer riding, be it road or path cycling, mountain biking, or dirt biking/ATVing. Rentals are available at several bike shops around town; Wandering Wheels, Skookum, and Great Canadian Tours, also offering Mountain Bike Shuttles. For young mountain biking enthusiasts, check out Beaver Lodge Bike Park on Mount Revelstoke; artistically appointed and mindfully designed to develop each essential skill mini mountain bikers need to hit the trails.

EASY DAY TRIPS • Beach Day at Shuswap or Okanagan Lake followed by Caravan Farm Theatre in Armstrong.

• Cruise up the Big Bend Highway 130 km to see the Mica Dam, scouting for (& stopping at) swimming holes all the way.

• Take a drive down Highway 23 South to the Galena Bay Ferry, and enjoy a free cruise across the bay.

Head further towards Nakusp and stop in at Halcyon Hot Springs for a dip in their four healing pools of various temperatures. Have dinner at the Kingfisher Restaurant on site, and enjoy a sunset cruise on the way back!
