Hello Winter is here and with the snow comes another issue of Substance Magazine. You will notice that the magazine has grown! Our winter issue boasts 100 pages, bringing you an additional 16 pages of incredible local content. We are beyond excited about this expansion and we are so proud of what Substance has become.

We continue to feel grateful for the community we live in. The connections we make with local businesses and retailers are second to none and we love the challenges that publishing a magazine of this calibre presents. We each run our other businesses, manage our teenagers, our households and walk our dogs- and we love every minute of the chaos that is a full and satisfying life.

We hope that you love this issue as much as we do.

The “substantial” content we have curated over the past few months is sure to interest even the toughest critics. Here’s to a winter full of adventures, fine foods, good health and lots of POW!

LETTER from the EDITOR KRISTI NELSON It’s an exciting time to launch our winter edition. Can you believe we are only days away from 2020? At the beginning of an entire new decade, the possibilities seem limitless. Maybe it’s your moment to launch that new venture, move to a new home, meet someone new, or take up a new tradition like naked skiing with the growing crowd celebrating the last day of the ski season each year. If that last part is indeed you, perhaps you’d like to be part of an upcoming feature in Substance! I just have SO many questions…

It’s hard to believe it’s been 20 years since “Y2K” - I remember ringing in the year 2000 in a basement house party on a snowy night in Revelstoke; relieved that the apocalypse did not in fact occur. Life went on (as did the party), and I have many memories of snowy walks home through quiet streets with good friends from back in those days.

As Revelstoke’s “aprés scene” grows, it is important to remember that life isn’t always a party. The long snowy winter can be difficult for some. With a newfound focus and awareness of the importance of combating depression and anxiety, we addressed a quietly common issue, Seasonal Affective Disorder, on page 82. Revelstoke’s grey winter days, massive snowfalls and long evenings can trigger SAD symptoms, thankfully contributors Talia and Theresa Camozzi offer a variety of suggestions and strategies to cope, they also have published a book on this topic.

We are grateful to our readers and contributors, and as our magazine grows, we hope to welcome new voices; if you have a suggestion, or a story or perspective on Revelstoke to share, we’d love to hear from you.

Naked skiers, I’m talking to you! I’m so fortunate to have the opportunity to use my voice to promote this incredible place, and to be partnered with our talented publishers, Sarah Mickel and Diane Bull. Did you know that Diane was honoured by the Chamber of Commerce as Revelstoke’s Business Person of the Year for 2019? We are incredibly proud of her!

Finding sparkle in the snow, getting above the clouds to find that sunshine, and relishing joyful moments are my favourite parts of the long winter season. Contributing to joyous experiences in the powder? Well-fitting ski boots, which, incidentally, are on the top of my Christmas wish list this year (along with gloves, apparently - see photo!). For more details on why fit is so important, check out page 88.

art knows no boundaries with Zuzana Riha

You may know her work from seeing her giant lifelike animal sculptures, paintings of bears and other wildlife, or temporary seasonal store window paintings. Local artist Zuzana is a special part of Revelstoke’s community who constantly inspires. Is there anything she can’t do?

This modern renaissance woman has many talents, and is as kind, strong, lovely and fun as she is capable. While catching up for this article, we reminisced about having spent a magical day together back in 2011 touring the Louvre in Paris. I recalled her awe, marvelling at the many masterpieces, as did she: “Can you believe that back then, they were only working with 4 or 5 oil colours?” She then explained the differences between acrylic and oil paint: “With modern acrylics, there are so many options, and we don’t have to wait as long for the layers to dry.” When asked about which projects she’s the most passionate about these days, “I currently love everything. I think it makes you a better artist; the really good artists are those who can do a bit of everything.” Like Picasso!

Although Zuzana now believes a true artist understands every medium and can turn it into art, with that being her personal goal, there were times when she felt she should be more focused on one discipline; “I’m just now realizing it’s not a bad thing. I’m not afraid to try new things and I’m excited about creating something new and different.”

She is now well known about town for her unique animal sculptures made from discarded materials. “Combining my passion for the outdoors and climate change has become a focal point and something I’m known for; I enjoy making art from trash, or things people wouldn’t think to use for art.”

A Marshall McLuhan quote, ‘The message is the medium’ comes to mind as we discuss this, so I ask how her projects come about; does a certain material inspire a project, or do you visualize the project first, then decide on materials? “It works both ways,” she says. Her rubber tire bear sculptures were inspired by her actually mistaking a pile of tires in a downtown alley for a bear. Sourcing old bike tires around town made the vision a reality, helping with disposal issues along the way. Her caribou, standing guard in front of Caribou House - which she runs with her partner, Andre - was originally inspired by spatulas (the end result includes many more materials such as hockey equipment). “Boxes are collecting in my basement and garage,” she laughs, with our society becoming more mindful of waste, people now think of her when disposing of items which may be useful in art projects. Zuzana also created an owl made of cutlery on display at Woolsey Creek, a local restaurant in which she is a part owner.

Zuzana’s art is available to view and purchase at Woolsey Creek Restaurant and The Modern Bakeshop, and she is now preparing for her second art show for The Revelstoke Visual Arts Centre.

In this edition, we are focusing on the kids, and sharing local uniquely Revelstokian stories; whether transpired or simply inspired and created here, these books are sure to instil further memories to last a lifetime.

These books by local authors and illustrators make magical gifts or souvenirs for the littlest readers in your life.

revelstoke reads Charles T. (Chic) Sharp has taught karate in Revelstoke for years, and is the author of the My Twelve Brothers and Me series of children’s books. The series tells the fictional tales of Chic and his younger brothers, all of whom have disappeared in remarkable and mysterious ways. Brother Creely enjoys antics and adventures such as riding a giant long john as a surf board, while Marty Two Shoes, with two right feet, has trouble walking a straight line but a special talent for finding lost possessions. Delightfully illustrated by his daughter, Cara, these books are whimsical and fun.

Local spiritual healer Mieke Blommestein has a series of books which combine lessons in mindfulness and kindness combined with nature. The Tale of Miss Spider Who Spun Her Web encourages readers to listen to their inner voice, while Benjamin the Crocodile teaches important lessons in self-acceptance.

In the Red Canoe by Leslie Davidson is a beautifully illustrated story celebrating spending time with grandparents in nature. Personally, when I’m reading aloud to my children, I enjoy it even more when the book rhymes, which this one does!

bc board books A collection of beautifully British Columbian board books for toddlers are the latest collaborations between BC artist Roy Vickers and author Robert Budd. Hello Humpback! in particular has brought much joy to our home (our three year old has it memorized and almost shrieks the repeating “Hello, Humpback!” part. She can also now accurately identify nearly all species of sea life by indigenous style drawings). Featuring Roy Vickers’ stunning art, these books are a pleasure to read; check out its companions, Sockeye Silver, Saltchuck Blue and One Eagle Soaring.

In Babies of the Great Bear Rainforest, award winning nature photographer Ian McAllister brings the baby animals of British Columbia’s Pacific coast together in this vibrant display of local wildlife.

Nicholas Oldland’s creative and funny books are peppered with powerful messages and adorable illustrations which may look strangely familiar. Perhaps you’ve seen them in your dreams; as Chief Creative Officer for Canadian children’s wear company Hadley, many of his designs appear on their trademark pajamas. Titles of his unique board books include The Busy Beaver, Up the Creek, Big Bear Hug and Walk on the Wild Side.

CRANBERRY ORANGE LOAF PREP: 20 MINUTES COOK: 80 MINUTES 2 cups all purpose flour 1 teaspoon baking powder ½ teaspoon salt 1 cup white sugar 1 tablespoon orange zest ½ cup buttermilk ½ cup vegetable oil ½ cup + 3 tablespoons orange juice 2 large eggs 1 teaspoon vanilla ½ cup cranberries 1 cup powdered sugar

1.

In a bowl, combine the flour, baking powder, salt, and sugar.

2.

In another bowl, combine your orange zest, buttermilk, vegetable oil, orange juice, eggs, and vanilla.

3.

Mix both bowls of ingredients together and add your cranberries (fresh or frozen) and gently mix. Note that the cranberries will work their way to the top of the loaf while baking.

4.

Bake in a 9x5 inch loaf pan at 325° for 75-80 minutes.

5.

In a small bowl, make your glaze by mixing together your powdered sugar and 3 tablespoons of orange juice.

6.

Once loaf has cooled, drizzle your glaze over top.

PREP: 45 MINUTES COOK: 25 MINUTES

CHEESECAKE STUFFED APPLES

6 apples 8 oz cream cheese 1/3 cup white sugar 1 teaspoon vanilla 1 egg 1 teaspoon cinnamon 1/3 cup of pecan pieces

1.

Take the apples, and carefully scrape out the entire inside, leaving a round apple ‘vessel’. Discard the core & seeds while chopping up the rest of the apple and adding it to a mixing bowl.

2.

In the bowl with your chopped apple, add your cream cheese, sugar, vanilla, egg, cinnamon, and pecan pieces.

Mix well.

3.

Take your mixture and fill back into your apple ‘vessels’.

4.

Place apples on greased pan and bake at 350° for 25 minutes.

5.

Serve with your choice of toppings. Here we used caramel sauce, pecans, and graham crumble. Other ideas are maple syrup, walnuts, etc.

UPSIDE DOWN GINGERBREAD PEAR CAKE PREP: 30 MINUTES COOK: 40 MINUTES 3 firm pears 1 cup unsalted butter 1 cup brown sugar 1 large egg 2 cups all purpose flour 1 teaspoon vanilla

3/4 cup dark molasses (mixed with 3/4 cup of hot water) 1/4 teaspoon salt 1/4 teaspoon ground cloves 1 ½ teaspoons ground ginger 1 teaspoon baking soda 1/4 teaspoon + 1 tablespoon cinnamon

1.

Thinly slice your pears and layer them to completely cover a greased, 9” pan (round or square).

2.

In a saucepan, over medium heat, mix ½ cup butter, ½ cup brown sugar, and 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon. Whisk until everything comes together, with sugar fully melted, then pour over pears.

3.

In a separate bowl, mix together ½ cup butter and ½ cup brown sugar. Mix until blended. Add flour, vanilla, egg, molasses mixture, salt, cloves, 1 tablespoon cinnamon, ginger, and baking soda.

4.

Spread your cake mixture gently over pears.

5.

Bake at 350° for 40 minutes.

6.

Serve warm with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream.

Whether you find yourself there with time on your hands in the form of scheduled R&R, a rest day to give the legs a break between powder days or being unexpectedly stranded on a road trip (mountain road closures are a very regular occurrence in the winter), the culinary scene offers variety in terms of not only types of cuisine but also in atmospheres and vibes. We took a very informal poll of locals and the Cheesy Fingers and Jalepeno Poppers were really getting the crowd excited; the house dip is something that cannot be missed (order it with everything). SET THE TABLE Have fun with glassware; you can find so many cool options at great price points! Hint: keep the box to tuck them away in when not in use. I LOVE a goblet at holidays- so festive, perfect for wine or nog.

I do have a set of charger plates, but I know my audience... this dinner was for my rowdy side... so simple placemats were sufficient (also less dishes!).

I always suggest fabric napkins...it’s a special touch for your guests. I put a simple leaf in the napkin holder to pull over the color.

PRO TIP - Set your table before your guests get there, or, if they are overnighters, before your kitchen gets cray- at least a few hours before dinner! Nothing like a little anticipation to convince your guests that your turkey is the best!

THE DETAILS Stick to a color theme for the most modern and crisp look. A grey and white palette here means that fresh greens POP and your food will be the star. As for plates, I use white simple dinner plates. They are easy to replace, then depending on the season I mix and match side plates and bowls.

We are pretty informal, so no salad forks or extra spoons!

For interest, vary the heights; taper candles, wine glasses and votive holders move your eye across the table and don’t impede anyone’s view across the table.

I like to mix and match real greens with artificial ones. That way, we get the benefit of the fresh smell of of the greens but nothing dries out too quickly.

If you’ve been feeling confused about Revelstoke’s real estate market, you’re not alone! After crunching the numbers, we were surprised about a few things ourselves. With the market changing so swiftly, trends can turn on a dime, so it takes effort to keep up. Numbers talk and facts matter - we broke it down, and can dispel some of the myths that may be floating around town!

"More homes are selling than ever before!”

In terms of volume, the single family home market remained relatively flat compared to last year. We analyzed the 12 month period ended October 31st with the same period the previous year and just two additional single family homes (96 for 2019 versus 94 for 2018) exchanged hands. Volume wise, 2015 was Revelstoke’s busiest year.

“The prices are going through the roof!”

Although the average sale price has increased substantially over the past few years and continues to rise, the high end market (in Revelstoke, $800,000+) actually saw far less action over the past year than the year previous (by about half!). That said, the number of houses selling in the $600’s more than doubled over the past year.

In the previous 12 month period ended in October 2018, over 1/2 of the single family home sales were under the $500,000 mark. In the same period ended in October 2019, fewer than 1/3 had a sale price under the $500,000 mark. The average sale price rose from $560k in the previous 6 months as we reported in the spring to $589k for the 6 months ending this fall.

“most houses sell within a week of being listed!”

False! In the past six months, just one home sold within a week of its listing date.

Although 13 of the 52 respective sales occurred within 30 days of the home being listed, the average single family home spent 67 days on the market. 52 single family homes sold in the past six months with an average sale price of $588,811, representing a total of over $30 million.

“Homes in Columbia Park sell the fastest.”

The trends change quickly - this was true for the six months ended this spring, as Substance readers may recall, we reported in our summer issue and the trend has already shifted! Now, for the current six month period at least, Downtown listings are being snapped up the fastest, spending an average of 53 days on the market.

Summing up the past few months of real estate movement in Revelstoke; the $600’s are currently a hot price range with a ton of movement, the number of single family homes under $500,000 is shrinking fast, prices are rising, volume is stable, and the high end luxury home market has seen a little less of the action lately. The good news? Overall, the market is strong and steady, with valuable opportunities for both buyers and sellers, particularly if these trends continue.

Revelstoke’s Guide to Loving it or Listing It with Nathan Weston Many homeowners looking to upgrade their living space struggle with the decision to either renovate their existing home or to build something new. Nathan Weston of Straight Up Construction specializes in helping homeowners with both renovations and new build projects in Revelstoke. Here are the questions he asks clients to help them decide.

WHAT’S THE CURRENT LOCATION LIKE?

If your kids and the neighbours are best friends, you walk to work or school, neighbourhood block parties are the highlight of your social calendar, and your view of Begbie can’t be beat, moving (even a few blocks) may throw a major kink into your present routines and lifestyle. In these cases, renovating is often a better option.

WHY ARE YOU ARE CONSIDERING RENOVATING OR MOVING IN THE FIRST PLACE?

If it’s as simple as adding a bathroom and upgrading kitchen finishings, perhaps a renovation can turn your not-quitefunctional home into your dream home. Ask yourself if the current layout is workable with a few tweaks or add-ons. Understanding any structural limitations of your current dwelling is key. The feasibility of a large renovation, such as adding a second story, depends on the type of foundation and age of the existing house. In Revelstoke, this includes unique engineering requirements to address snow loads, for example.

IS YOUR HOME SUITABLE FOR YOU FOR THE LONG TERM?

If your projected window for living in your current home is 5 years or less, making simple renovations are ideal to make your space more livable for you. If the timeframe is 5-10 years (waiting for children to graduate, for example), it may be worthwhile to take on a larger renovation project prior to moving.

EITHER WAY, CONSIDER WHERE YOU’D LIVE IN THE MEANTIME

If you plan to renovate, will your home be livable during the construction phase? If you are building, can you afford to stay in your current home while the new one is being built?

Generally, lots in Revelstoke are selling anywhere from $250,000, up to the $400,000 range. An average basic family home build will cost an additional $600,000. Normally, the banks like the homeowners to own the land outright and be able to provide funding for the foundation before financing kicks in. Typically, this is around $100,000. So, in other words, if you currently own your home and intend to stay in it during the building process, crunch the numbers to ensure it’s financially viable.

WHAT ABOUT DEVELOPMENT COST CHARGES (DCC) FEES? ARE THERE SIGNIFICANT SAVINGS FOR RENOVATING VERSUS BUILDING?

The City of Revelstoke’s Development Cost Charges are currently about $15,000 to $18,000 per new home for a suite built in Arrow Heights, depending on building lot size. A variation of these charges also apply to substantial renovations over $100,000 that affect existing infrastructure.

DOES YOUR CURRENT HOME HAVE HERITAGE STATUS?

Many homes in Revelstoke’s historic downtown have Heritage status, and alterations (even paint colours!) must be approved by the Heritage Committee. It is important to check if your home is included in this area. If so, ask about the approval process, timelines, and any additional requirements from the Heritage committee and the City of Revelstoke.

As Revelstoke grows and changes, its quickly fluctuating housing market is a hot topic around town. We wanted to find out who some of Revelstoke’s most recent buyers have been and what their real life experiences were like within this exciting market. The overwhelming consensus from these homeowners? “Get in while you can!”

- Tickner Family Our first couple initially lived in Revelstoke during the exciting days of 2008-2010 when the ski hill was just gaining momentum. They then moved to Australia, but their love of Revelstoke’s laid back lifestyle, likeminded, caring people, and fantastic skiing lured them back. Now a little family, they were attracted to their new property for its unobstructed views and lot size, all located just a few minutes’ walk from both downtown Revelstoke and the Greenbelt pathways. With the real estate market having changed substantially in the years they were down south, the couple was surprised to learn that the property they loved had sat on the market for two years, seemingly unnoticed. “We were shocked that no one had recognized the potential it had. We feel so lucky to have gotten into the market in 2015 before things really started to take off.”

On their must-have list? Walkability was high; close proximity to schools, pathways and downtown. Initially, “We really wanted land to build. This lot was substantial with two homes on it, and we recognized the unique opportunity to transform the property. Leon, owner of Axe One Building Co., took on the challenge of completely restoring and extending the one bedroom house on the lot, which most would have viewed as a tear-down.

The charm of the tiny 1930’s home just spoke to us and we knew we wanted to save it.” Eventually the couple subdivided the lot, selling the parcel with the larger house and restoring the cabin, which they have made their home with its charm, large yard and unobstructed views of MacKenzie, Begbie and MacPherson. “It’s heaven,” says Stefanie.

When asked what was the best part of the real estate transaction, she jokes; “Boaters gonna boat - the sale included a boat!” The homeowners have also enjoyed the anecdotal stories told by locals reminiscing about parties held in the house in years gone by, “Our property was owned by the Shamons, an original Revelstoke family. You can tell the place was loved. It’s covered in old fruit trees, and it just has a lovely energy to it.”

In terms of offering advice to those in the market, “I think there is still the false perception that the current prices are hyped up, similar to what happened in 2008, and that they will come down again. We are sandwiched between a river and a national park. Space is at a premium and there is a reason why such a large international crowd is coming here each year. Get in while you still can.”

- LeRose Family Newlyweds Olivia and AJ purchased their first home - a bungalow in Columbia Park - in August of this year and are settling in nicely. They are enjoying their yard and having extra space for storing their RV and boat. Having looked for a property for about two years, “We are truly grateful to Tara Sutherland for helping us find this house and we are so happy to be settling down in Revelstoke. We had made offers on other houses, but because it is such a competitive market it was tough to make an agreed contact with a seller.” When the listing for their home came up, “Tara called us about this house knowing exactly what our needs were and she was able to see this was the perfect fit!”

When asked if these Revelstoke locals encountered any surprises in the home buying process, “The ruthlessness of the Revelstoke market was the most shocking. Homes in our price range were extremely limited and the better purchases were gone seemingly in moments, many being sold with little to no conditions, and over asking price. Assuming the market is hard would be an understatement,” says Olivia. She further warns, “Be careful of money pits, but when the one comes up that fits, do not hesitate a moment to make an offer if you can.”

We asked the couple if they considered other communities, but with family in town and all the recreation opportunities they could ask for in a familiar small town setting, Revelstoke is home to these two: “Outside of every window in Revelstoke is a million dollar view. Buying in Revelstoke was the biggest challenge of our lives, and the best choice we ever made. We love the small town community from growing up here, but we are really enjoying the new locals making this a great community too.”

- Biollo Family Initially getting into the Revelstoke market in 2012, the Biollo Family had a quick month of house hunting before finding their new abode, conveniently located in Arrow Heights, with quick access to both the ski hill and an elementary school. “We had enough equity in our previous home to make a major upgrade for our family. We were also excited at the prospect of not needing to do any more renovations as this home is brand new. We are focused on enjoying our kids now with any spare time we have.” A brand new home also meant new luxuries and functionalities such as A/C, a new furnace, windows and fresh air exchange.

What sort of features did the family want in an upgrade? “We wanted a large finished garage, lots of natural light and to be closer to the ski hill.”

When asked about the best part of the real estate transaction, Meredith laughs, “The window shopping, and then straight to when it was done! Buying and selling real estate is extremely stressful. Our realtor, Tara, was supportive with aspects of the negotiations that we were passionate about, she was prompt, honest and did the work to make it happen regardless of the time or day.”

Having lived in Revelstoke for 11 years, always keeping an eye on things, the Biollos were not as surprised to see what’s happening in the market, “We are grateful to have been able to purchase and own a home in today’s market. Get in there if you can. I couldn’t imagine 7 years ago that we would be where we are today and I don’t see the trend changing.” The Biollo’s have made Revelstoke their home, enjoying everything from the picturesque mountains, rivers and outdoors to the people: “We feel surrounded by love, support and likeminded young progressive families, and that is the best part.”

- Rebecca Marchildon Having recently purchased both a residential home and a commercial property for her growing business, The Alchemy Studio (formerly Revelution), Rebecca Marchildon has spent a lot of time perusing, purchasing and negotiating on Revelstoke real estate recently, so we naturally wanted to know about her perspective on the topic.

From when they began looking, “We found our house in a matter of weeks, negotiations were smooth and straight forward, and we purchased it at an amazing price thanks to Tara’s negotiations,” says Marchildon. The family loves their new Upper Arrow Heights home with a view they describe as spectacular; “We love that our house is near the awesome ski resort & our children’s school. We absolutely love how safe we feel in our neighbourhood and community.”

From there, “Tara showed us the heritage building (the Needham Building on Douglas Street) for our business idea a few times. We finally buckled down and made the purchase. She was very patient, assisting us throughout the process of making some dreams come true!” Excited to expand their growing business into the space, “Our business location is very central to all of the different areas of Revelstoke which makes it very special. Initially, I was worried about not being right downtown, but Tara helped me realize the location was actually perfect and parking availability was way better than downtown!”

Echoing the sentiments of the other featured homeowners, Rebecca notes how quickly Revelstoke is growing, and with it, the demand for quality homes. “Prices are going up and up and up, so buy as soon as you find an deal you can make happen.”

TEMPERATURE + LIGHT Your Monstera will grow just about anywhere in your home, it tolerates low light, but grows faster and becomes more dramatic in a bright spot. That said, avoid strong, direct sunlight because it may burn the leaves.

WATER When its soil becomes dry to a depth of 1-2”, water directly into the pot so not to moisten foliage; just enough to keep the soil from completely drying out. Your Monstera is somewhat drought tolerant, so you don’t need to worry about keeping up with the watering all the time. Be careful not to allow the pot to stand in water, as this will cause root rot.

FERTILIZER For best results, feed your plant once a month throughout the spring and summer.

A little bit of food will go a long way to encourage growth and root health. No fertilizer is necessary during the winter—it’s important to give your Monstera a chance to rest during the cooler time of year.

CARE Large leaves can collect dust. If you notice the leaves are dirty or dusty, wipe the leaves with a damp cloth and gently dry to keep them clean and healthy.

Monstera Deliciosa’s iconic, pretty split leaves have been featured extensively in art and design recently, it’s hard to scroll through instagram without catching a glimpse of one. Even more stunning is the plant itself, also known as a split leaf philodendron. This easy-to-grow houseplant can get huge and live for many years, and looks great with many different interior styles. It’s safe to say that the Monstera isn’t going away anytime soon.

You will recognize their large, glossy green leaves with deep splits and holes. Like most houseplants, it’s native to the tropics, hailing from the rainforests of southern Mexico and Central America. While it rarely flowers indoors, outdoors it produces flowers that develop into edible fruit that is said to taste like a fruit salad. The solid green variety is by far the most common, while the beautiful speckled white and green M. deliciosa variegata is slower-growing, and more rare.

Every new home in Revelstoke is unique, as homeowner Katherine Brown points out. When it comes to her beautiful new space, the attention to quality and detail we have come to expect from Jordan Cochrane Construction is evident.

She especially loves the distinctly ‘Revelstoke’ live edge floating shelves in her kitchen. Her custom stair railing was done by Jason Rutledge of Back Country Metal Works and is a favourite feature in the home which attracts the eye.

She credits Jordan’s team for being helpful in figuring out how to make the gas fireplace fit with the design, and coming through with sourcing some tough items such as the cement tiles in the powder room.

Having lived in the neighbourhood for 10 years, they were eager to stay, so when the opportunity presented itself, they snapped up their lot, but waited a couple of years before actually building. Self-described as budget-conscious, the family found great value in building rather than buying; “The real estate market in Revelstoke today makes building a viable option. Older homes that need significant work are selling for prices that are the same as building new.

Of course, older homes can have qualities that you can’t get in a new build such as character and historic value,” says Katherine.

When asked about the process, she said, “Building isn’t easy and no matter how much planning you do before hand, if it’s your first experience with a build, you will need to continue to make decisions through the entire process. It’s tough to know what will impact the budget and what won’t. It’s helpful to have a builder like Jordan who can work with your designer to ensure that you are making good decisions that stay within your budget, yet are also in line with current standards for today’s technology.”

Katherine’s advice for those considering building in the Revelstoke market: “Take your time researching designs and technolgy online before hand. I would advise against thinking the “homeower” can design it themselves with out looking strange or taking best practice design principles into account.”

Originally from Ontario, the family loves living in Revelstoke, its many activities, pace of life and residents, and they now have a fantastic new abode to call home.

Keeping track of your tribe might be tricky with the extensive terrain of Revelstoke Mountain Resort. Plan ahead on an aprés meeting spot in case anyone gets lost. The Rockford has spectacular views, and MacKenzie Common Tavern has more of a cozy vibe.

Staying up at the hill to enjoy the true ski in/ski out experience at the Sutton Place at RMR adds a feeling of relaxation and luxury to the weekend. Ski/eat/ sleep - you may not need to leave! If downtown is more your vibe, The Regent Hotel is a centrally located historic, landmark hotel, or there are also a number of cute B&B’s in heritage homes in Revelstoke to consider such as The McCarty House and The Holten House. If you’re staying at the hill, grab dinner there - the Rockford Grill and MacKenzie Tavern are located just steps from the rooms. Skiing and boarding present a great way to bond with your partner; you get quality time on the chairlift in between breaks of quiet alone time on the way down the hill to ponder life, all the while feeling on top of the world. There’s enough speed and adrenaline to make it interesting, and an opportunity to observe your partner’s physical movements and location in a way that everyday life doesn’t require. Needing to keep an eye on one another’s whereabouts is essential to being a good ski partner; in day to day life, the conveniences of cell phones and our culture of independent living strip us of this, so skiing provides a nice opportunity to get back to basics and stay in the moment. #coupleswhoplaytogetherstaytogether If you can swing it, and the weather cooperates, RMR’s “First Tracks” program is a memorable way to get the very most of a powder day. By booking in advance (only 28 guests are accepted per day) and paying an extra $49, you are given early guided access to designated powder runs on the hill (you’ll get in 2-3 runs before the public arrives at 8:45 am). This type of guaranteed access to untracked powder is normally only available with a heli-skiing or cat skiing experience (so this is a fantastic deal). If you time your rides right, with your early access you will in fact get even more first tracks by being one of the first over to the Ripper Chair, for example.

The idea of starting a stretching routine can be a bit overwhelming, but for those with chronic aches and pains, it can really make a huge difference in managing discomfort, while maintaining functional movement and enhancing athletic performance.

We enlisted the help of physiotherapist Lindsay Corrigan to create a little reference sheet of stretches and exercises designed to ease the pain of common tight spots and injuries.

Start where it’s sore, eventually incorporating all of these little moments of self care into your day while watching TV or winding down in the evening. It only takes a few minutes to improve your posture, relieve stress and enhance circulation; just a few of the many side benefits associated with a good stretch.

RUNNER’S LUNGE

WHY •

WHY • This is a great stretch to combat the effects of prolonged sitting/driving, or activities such as running, hiking, biking, and ski touring. Tight hip flexors can contribute to hip and low back pain, and poor posture.

PIRIFORMIS STRETCH Figure 4 is a wonderful stretch to loosen tight glutes, piriformis and other rotators of hips while taking pressure off the low back. This is a great stretch to perform after lower body activities. It is helpful for anyone with hip or lower back pain, or those suffering from Sciatica.

HOW • Lie down on your back with both

knees bent and feet in line with your hips.

Bring one ankle on top of the opposite knee and without shifting the hips or lower back try and press the lifted knee away from you. If you don’t feel a stretch yet, reach through and grasp the back of the leg that is still on the ground and pull the leg towards you, so the foot lifts up.

Try to keep your back flat on the ground instead of rounding your spine. Hold 3060 seconds on each side

PRO TIP • If you have difficulty getting onto the ground, this stretch can be performed while sitting. Sit at the edge of a chair, place one ankle on top of the opposite knee and try and sit up tall.

Alternatively, lying down, you can place the lifted foot on a wall, so you don’t have to reach through to hold your lifted leg.

HIP FLEXOR STRETCH

HOW • Begin kneeling on one knee and take a large step forward with the other foot. Keeping your torso upright and your spine straight, shift your weight onto your front foot so your knee stacks directly over top of your foot. Then, tuck your tailbone down towards the ground to increase the stretch in the front of the back thigh. Hold 30-60 seconds each side.

PRO TIP •

To increase the stretch, reach the same arm as the back leg up into the air and try to perform a slight side bend away from that side. To make this stretch easier, try it standing. Place one foot up on a step and lunge forward, then tuck your tailbone down like in the kneeling version.

PEC STRETCH

WHY • Child’s pose is a gentle and safe mobility exercise for the ankle, knees, hips and spine and shoulders. It is also a great position for relaxed breathing or meditation.

WHY • This is a great stretch to combat rounded shoulders and poor posture. It is helpful for reducing strain on the muscles of the neck and shoulders, reducing numbness and tingling in the hands at night, and is excellent after activities such as biking, skiing, climbing, prolonged time driving or working at a computer.

HOW • Start on hands and knees and slowly sink your hips over our heels and allow your back to round into a gentle spine flexion stretch. Keep your arms reaching out in front for a shoulder and lat stretch, or keep them by your side for a more relaxed position. Hold 1-2 minutes.

HOW •

Lie down with your spine lengthwise over top of a rolled-up towel, yoga mat, foam roller or bolster. Bring your arms to shoulder height, palms facing the ceiling. If you don’t have a stretch in the front of your shoulders, bend your elbow to 90 degrees and let your arms rotate backwards until the back of your hands rest on the ground.

Try and keep your spine flat/avoid arching and keep your chin tucked in. Hold 1-2 minutes.

PRO TIP •

Walk both hands to the left or right to increase the side body stretch.

If your knees or ankles don’t like the pressure of sitting on them, place a foam block or rolled up towel between your legs for your sit bones to rest on.

PRO TIP • If having your arms at shoulder height (bent elbows or not) is too difficult or creates numbness/tingling in your hands, lower your arms down by your side but keep your palms facing up.

CAT/COW WHY •

Cat/Cow is a great way to encourage spine mobility before or after activity. It is a gentle and safe way to stretch the back and is helpful for anyone suffering from lower back pain or stiffness.

HOW • Start on your hands and knees with your shoulders over your wrists and your hips over your knees. As you inhale, drop your belly towards the ground, tip your sit bones up to the ceiling behind you, and if it is comfortable, look up towards the ceiling. Then, as you exhale, press the ground away from you, round your spine and pull your belly in. Tuck your tailbone under and look towards your belly button. Repeat this sequence with your breath cycle 10x.

PRO TIP • When your belly drops into extension, squeeze your shoulder blades together and press your chest forward. As you round into flexion try and spread your shoulder blades further apart and squeeze your abdominals in.

SUPINE SPINAL TWIST WHY•

This great way to encourage spine mobility before or after activity. It is a gentle and safe way to stretch the back, glutes and pecs and is helpful for anyone suffering from back pain or stiffness.

HOW • Lie down on your back with your legs straight. Draw one knee in towards the chest and

using your opposite hand to guide it, draw your knee across your body and gently allow it to drop towards the ground on the opposite side of our body. Try and keep both shoulders flat on the ground as you perform this gentle twist. Gaze towards the ceiling or away from the bent knee. Hold 30-60 seconds.

PRO TIP •

To increase the stretch in front of the chest, try reaching the opposite arm out like a T at shoulder height with the palm facing the ceiling. To make this stretch easier, start with bent knees and allow both of them to move to the side together.

Often patients turn to IV therapy to help work on concerns ranging from generally feeling run down, fighting infections, conditions that compromise gut nutrient absorption, or even to support chemotherapy treatments and athletic performance.

What are the key benefits? Firstly, it’s fast. When we are really run down, or working through times of disease, the body’s demands for healthy foods and nutrients increases beyond what is a maintenance amount. Sometimes it can be challenging to achieve those levels in the blood, and that is where IV therapy can be assessed to possibly aid in that. As an example, we know that at certain blood concentrations, vitamin C exhibits anti-viral properties. The gut and kidneys will reach a limit of absorption, thus making this difficult to achieve orally. Utilizing the IV, we can skip the gut and go directly into the blood stream.

In naturopathic medicine, there is no one-size fits all solution, so although this is a safe procedure, it is not for everyone. An initial consultation is required to assess your individual concerns and specific health needs. This may include a physical exam or additional blood work. From there, if an IV is suitable, it can be formulated to suit your specifics needs.

You may have heard of one of the most widely implemented formulas for these infusions; “The Myers’ Cocktail”, or “Myers’”. AN EXPLORATION OF SEASONAL AFFECTIVE DISORDER (SAD) IN REVELSTOKE Living and adventuring in Revelstoke has unlimited benefits and perks. Yet there is something lurking in the shadows of our glorious mountains in the winter: an increased likelihood of developing SAD. Our bodies change with the cycling of the seasons. Every cell responds to the seasonal rhythm of days and nights. Wintery decreases in sunlight cause measurable changes in our biochemistry, for example a decrease in important mood regulating molecules like serotonin, melatonin and vitamin D. When these physical changes interact with other risk factors, our likelihood of developing SAD increases. Such risk factors include: being a woman, being young, working a job that includes shift work, a personal or family history of SAD, and having a personal history of clinical depression or bipolar disorder. Like most things affecting our mental health, the exact cause is elusive and almost always the result of a combination of factors.

Some people joke that they go into hibernation as soon as the snow flies, but within that joke there is truth. Being part of our environment means that when there is a shift in the world around us. there is a shift within us. Or at least there should be. Bears naturally hibernate, and for us humans we naturally slow down too.

We’ve gotten used to relying on electricity to extend our days as long we want. We don’t allow for the natural slow down and need for introspection and rest that winter invites us to do. We think nothing of eating food that has been shipped from around the world so that not a day has to go by without a fresh strawberry (as pale and tasteless as January strawberries can be). We’re disconnected from the land we live on and the wisdom found here.

A healthy shift into winter can look like sleeping a little bit more; leaning into the cozy winter vibe; connecting with family, friends and community; eating warming seasonal foods and spices; and bundling up to read more books for an evening activity. An unhealthy shift into winter can look like excessive sleeping, feeling dread about leaving home, bingeing on carbohydrate rich foods, or using the television or internet for extended periods.

In our experience, the very best things that you can do to fortify yourself against low mood in the winter are: get outside every day for at least 30 minutes; find something beautiful and meaningful about the season; participate in winter celebrations and community events; seek help at the first sign of depression (or before it starts if it is a predictable cycle for you).

Winter in Revelstoke can be a time of pure magic, but if you are affected by SAD that magic dwindles. There are so many well researched treatments for SAD including light therapy, herbal therapy, pharmaceutical therapy, talk therapy, outdoor activities, and nutritional interventions. It isn’t a one size fits all treatment, and they all have potential side effects (even light therapy) so it’s important to work with a healthcare provider.

If someone you love becomes withdrawn and down in the winter, keep reaching out to them. Bring them outside, include them in your plans, invite them for dinner, suggest they get some help from their care team, and have compassion for what they’re going through.

It’s a dark winter evening in the valley. The sound of a far away train whistle is muffled by the falling snow. Revelstoke sleeps.

in this community because they knew that it was special; they knew that Revelstoke was Home, despite the challenges laid before them.

But in the earliest hours of any new morning, polka dots of lit up houses glow like fireflies.

The smell of steaming hot coffee fuels the invisible highway of data that pumps through the veins of the high speed network. These are the Intercontinental Commuters of Revelstoke in their natural habitat. Greenwich Time (it’s not a vegan lunch break) is their beacon—they intricately thread their work through time zones so meticulously that it would put even the hardest working spider to shame. They dwell among us.

They probably nap sometimes.

It’s never been overly easy to live here, but it’s always been worth it. We know how to dig deep to achieve our biggest goals, just as we know how to dig ourselves out from under our biggest snowfalls.

Modern technology has greatly supported the dynamic diversification of this city, proving that if you want to live here badly enough, you can do it. It’s as easy as setting your alarm for a conference call at 3am, then commuting back and forth to Australia or Switzerland every few months.

This is the newest version of BYOC (Bring Your Own Career) Revelstokians. We’ve had them for decades, each wave defining an era in the history of Revelstoke.

It was the boldness of the BYOCs in the 80’s that helped to sustain our population after the Revelstoke Canyon Dam was completed. A sizable convoy migrated from Hudson’s Hope to Mica Creek to Revelstoke. Their Pied Piper was BC Hydro, building a series of large-scale energy projects which provided secure employment that financed the dreams of many, at a time when the interest rate was 22.75%. When the project finished in 1984, some reinvented themselves as entrepreneurs, starting new businesses and assuming great risk. They invested

There is a steady rhythm to Revelstoke life, like the ticking of a grandfather clock. The unwavering bass line in this tune finds it way back to itself every time. Look no further than to the old buildings that line our main streets—they’ve been restored to pay homage to the past because we know the value of our history. In these same buildings you’ll find the coffee shops where some of the BYOC’s from the 80’s still meet for a gab, as an Intercontinental Commuter stops for breakfast after working all night. They pass by each other, never knowing how much they share in common.

Intercontinental Commuters can’t be spotted because they’re just like you and me; another person who loves to live here and is doing what it takes to stay. Their secret handshake is in binary and there’s an app to track your interactions. It’s sort of like Pokemon Go but with less battling. You might learn the handshake by simply turning to a new face and saying hello.

People from across the globe are following the data trail to Revelstoke and falling in love with our quiet snowy nights. Old houses look like they’re made of gingerbread again. The schools are bursting at the seams and there is a palpable sense of forward-thinking vitality in this mighty little city that never sleeps.

We are here. It is worth it.

Eco Smart Adventure

With numerous eco terms being tossed around these days, I wonder if they are all a form of “greenwashing”. Is ‘eco smart adventure’ an oxymoron when applied to tourism in BC? We are at a crossroads of conflict in BC. Tourism is our biggest source of income by a factor of 8. No industry can compete with the dollars brought into our province by people coming to appreciate what beautiful landscapes we have. The flip side of this is that the international travel and ecological footprint is in fact ruining what we have to offer. Think about how many of us are now planning our summers around avoiding the smoke from forest fires. We are all witnessing inconsistent winters and other climate changing actions. The forests in the north have gone from endless green, to a plague of red and dead trees. These changes are happening because of our massive carbon footprint and dependence on fossil fuels.

So, how can a town like Revelstoke, which is completely dependent on tourism, even hope to offer eco smart adventures? Is there a way we could offer offsets or types of adventure that complement our natural environment?

Presently, there are not a lot of options for us to use, but there is no doubt that the future will be different.

At this point, Revelstoke Mountain Resort is one of the greenest ski options, being powered by renewable electricity. Tourists can easily stay at the bottom of the hill and simply use the lifts for shredding or ski tour the backcountry beyond the lifts.

Backcountry skiers driving to Roger’s Pass for multiple days leave a bit more of a footprint. Hopefully in the near future, electric vehicles rentals or buses will be options for our lovely town.

The impact of flying into one of our incredible backcountry lodges and then skiing out of them for a week is surprisingly low; similar to driving to Rogers Pass daily for adventures. They also boast the added benefit of truly isolating people and saturating them in nature.

Snowmobiling is a huge draw to Revelstoke. Will the Taiga electric snowmobile ever be able to answer the demands of those rippers? It is still in its infancy but perhaps a few years from now, snowmobilers will be silently and powerfully shredding through the Monashee powder up on Boulder mountain.

We boast the best Heli-skiing in the world, is there a way to green that industry? In my mind, the best action that comes from Heli skiing, is influencing the 1% to care about climate and snow. Enjoying nature, immersing yourself in it, being neck deep in powder, makes you appreciate it and builds a desire to protect it. We are probably a few years away from the future that I dream of… where personal electric drones fly people around the mountains, guiding them to the best powder on earth.

Revelstoke is a trendsetting town, and I have no doubt that we will lead the way into adventures with less impacts, as long as we keep questioning the status quo and searching for alternatives. It is our responsibility to evolve and offer better options for the tourists and for our future.

Chances are, you have heard all of these things said to you with regards to ski boots. But what does it all actually mean? There is no question that boots are a key part of a great day on the hill; I don’t care how incredible your skis are or how good you look, if your feet hurt, it’s lodge time instead of pow time. So what’s involved in a good bootfitting?

Bootfitting is a process. It is a relationship with your bootfitter that takes time.

It is very rare that a boot right off the wall is going to fit your foot well enough for the demands of skiing in Revelstoke. “We are not looking for the perfect boot off the wall,” said Mikey Harris, head bootfitter at Skookum Revelstoke, “We want to find the best fit overall, and then we work with the boot to make it perfect.” The amount of customization is going to vary from skier to skier, but just because every part of the boot is customizable it doesn’t mean it is always necessary. “Sometimes all it takes is a slight shell punch to meet the needs of that particular skier.”

There are 4 components to a well fitting boot: shell, liner, footbed and socks.

“The goal is to get the shell of the boot matched closely to the shape of the foot, and get a balance of all day comfort with high end performance,’’ Mikey said. This balance is super important, too much of either and the experience suffers. ”I also assess the foot, ankle and knee movement and flexibility in order to create a plan for stabilizing and aligning them inside the boot.” BLAH BLAH BLAH, Mikey, I just want to ski! “I keep your body parts tight and in a straight line!” Ahh thanks! Boot companies are starting to integrate more bootfitting-specific features in their liners and of course there are custom options available. Providing the foundation for the rest of the boot, the footbed is the one place it is recommended to always get customized support. “Feet are incredibly complex,” observed Mikey, “Without a supportive footbed, the foot muscles are unable to relax in the boot, which leads to all kinds of fit issues.” Also, bones start to pinch nerves, knees start to party all over the place, and ankles get smashed. Finally, the sock. A Haiku.

Every ski day is a great day, but only if you are actually skiing and not in the fetal position in the Village Idiot later that night with a bag of ice on your feet and a stiff drink in your hand.
