Compressive Tuning has become a premiere brand and major icon in the industry while remaining steady as global leader in handcrafted performance parts development. The California-based organization is staffed with a team of Subaru performance specialists who weave extreme creativity, innovation, artistic personality, and craftsmanship into everything they create. The most unique aspect of the COBB FMIC is the use of a vertical flow core. The Garrett core comes in a 24" x 8" x 3.5" and flows from bottom to top. Packaging in the car benefits significantly from this core design, as does pipe routing. The end tanks are formed sheet aluminum and taper to create even pressure across both sides of the core, maximizing cooling efficiency. Each end tank is finished off with a billet aluminum machined 2.5" inlet/outlet Once assembled, the cores are finished in either black or silver powder coat.

Christian T. was a curious kid who needed to figure things out and see how things fit together.

“To understand my passion for cars, first you must understand I was that kid taking apart the alarm clock and trying to figure out how to put it back together”, he said. Christian has proven himself to be a true individual in choosing this specific Subaru chassis to express his creativity. “The 2007 GD platform provides the final take on a “pre traction control” era Subaru, with the sleek look of the Hawkeye front end”, he said.

stitching body working a Wagon & STI rear bumper together to formulate an OEM look,” he said. “My favorite modification is the Spec C Type RA-R front clip”, he confirmed. He is focused on taking his visions to the next level by saying, “The car is mostly complete, as with any of our builds there is always something more to do.”

theins&outs

The exterior of Christian’s car brilliantly shines with its Hyper Blue paint color. The build took shape by adding a Spec C RA-R Front Clip, adding Subaru STI wide body’s rear quarter panels and doors, and including a customized rear bumper that is a blend of a STI Sedan and factory wagon bumper. Christian enhanced the inside of the vehicle with a STI Interior from JDM Racing, Cobb Shift Knob, and a VDO Triple Gauge Pod. He installed Circuit Demon Headlights on the front and mounted JBL speakers in all four doors just to turn more heads.

thegripsystem

Wanting to powerfully lock the car on the road, he was quick to include ISC N1 Coilovers and Front & Rear Strut tower braces to upgrade and firm up the suspension system. He enhanced grip and added visuals by mounting four Falken Azenis RT660 tires on some TE37 wheels from Volk Racing. Finally, he upgraded his safety and stopping power by installing a set of STI Brembo Brakes to make his custom 2007 Subaru WRX/STi Wagon a safe and responsive performer in any conditions.

The engine upgrades included the installation of an IAG 550 Short Block and Air Oil Separator, Invidia Header, Invidia Up Pipe, Invidia Downpipe, a custom made catback to clear his tow hitch, a GFB Blow Off Valve, and a Pro-Tune from RRT Motorsports. He continued upgrading with a complete 6 Speed drivetrain swap from an 08’ STI, ACT Stage 2 Clutch and Streetlight Flywheel. Christian finalized his drivetrain modifications by installing KEIN Engine Mounts, Transmission Mount, Differential Carrier Mount, and Pitch Stop.

the new kid on the block

The 86 chassis sparked a ton of debate when it was released to the states back in 2013! The first of its kind for the AWD auto maker in collaboration with Toyota netted enthusiasts a very interesting platform that would grow to be the next big thing in the tuner world! The question we have to answer here though is; How does the 86 Platform stack up next to one of the great icons in the drift world, the 240SX. The 240 and other s-chassis variants have become the go to for grass roots and pro drifters alike. While not originally designed for drifting in the early days in Japan these cars were adopted by the drifting scene due to their RWD driveline, balanced weight distribution and their lightweight design.

Having driven pretty well sorted examples of both cars I can say for certain that the 86 Platform is one of the best starting points for a new enthusiast today but there are some things to consider but like everything else in life nothing is perfect.

The 86 platform itself is great, the first gen models leave a bit to be desired when it comes to power and the Torsen LSD can be a bit hard to learn at first, requiring a very heavy foot to keep the differential locked sending power to both rear wheels. My biggest gripe has to be with the electronic power steering system, this design softens the wheel at low speed to make turning easier but as the vehicle speed increases the wheel becomes much heavier and can be a real pain in the__ You know what I mean.

Luckily, all of these elements are correctable! A few key upgrades such as a 2-Way Rear Differential, power steering controller and even some basic engine upgrades breathe new life into this platform and make it a totally drift ready platform. Adding forced induction is a whole new level to this car, the FA20 platform really takes to boost well with a good tune and the car is geared very nicely for courses where 2nd and 3rd gear are most utilized!

As the price of s-chassis and their upgrades continue to skyrocket in America, more new drivers will be looking at the 86 Platform as their next project car and I feel that they are right to do so! The Gen 1 cars are starting to really come down in price and there is a plethora of upgrades out on the market already for them, pretty much anything you could want for a drift car is available for this platform and once you get a few events under your belt I think you’ll agree that the 86 Platform is the future, it may not be “better” by definition than the 240SX but you can’t argue that the new kid on the block is starting to make some waves!

At Subimods, we take pride in being just as passionate as our customers. We understand the thrill of late-night drives, the adrenaline of track days, and the countless hours spent in the garage perfecting our cars. But sometimes, even the most dedicated enthusiasts need a little extra help—whether it’s tackling a complex part or lacking the specialized tools to get the job done. When that moment comes, finding a trusted partner becomes essential. That’s exactly where we found ourselves in mid-2024.

It wasn’t about lacking skill or motivation. We love working on our cars. But as our motorsports ambitions grew, especially with our two BRZ drift cars, we recognized the need for additional expertise to meet the demanding standards of this competitive world. That’s when Ben, Ross, Kyle and the talented technicians at EFI Performance (EFI Logics) stepped in. Located just an hour from Subimods HQ, we already had a strong relationship with EFI and knew their stellar reputation—built over 16 years in the racing industry—would make them the perfect partner. Their extensive experience and proven track record gave us full confidence that our fleet was in good hands.

EFI began by taking charge of our 2025 Gridlife Time Attack project, which we can’t wait to share with you in the coming months. They meticulously gutted the chassis, performed critical safety upgrades, and prepared the engine and drivetrain for competition. But why stop at one project? We handed over both our 2022 and 2013 BRZ drift cars, along with a truckload of parts, and said, “Have at it!” Jack, Diego, and Sharbel at EFI got to work, installing HKS Turbo Kits and a range of drift-focused upgrades. From there, Calvin at Dotson Tuning worked his magic, dialing in the performance while ensuring both cars could handle the intense demands of drift racing. The results were nothing short of phenomenal.

If you’re considering working with EFI Performance, we can’t recommend them enough. From motorsports programs to specialized tuning, their expertise is unmatched. Use the QR code above to explore their services—we trust them with our fleet, and we’re confident they’ll exceed your expectations too.
