We got together with our friends from Mediamatic to throw one of the best arty-parties of the summer. It was hot, jam-packed and happening. And you were there in numbers, sipping cocktails and dancing to the tunes of Jef Barbara.

On the rare occasions that the sun was out this summer, we had lunch out on the courtyard of our Tetterode office.

We got our Robber bread from Vomar and spiced it up with pesto, tomatoes, hummus, rucola, egg-salad, cucumber, mayonaise, salt, pepper, you know, the works!... And you thought we were hipsters.

Death Grips just left an unattended piece of musical luggage in a public area and we don’t really know who to contact, so explosive is this stuff. The new Californian avant-hip hop project by Flatlander and Zach Hill has detonated its debut mixtape Ex-Military with a bangful of lyrics shouted through gritted teeth and excruciatingly loud samples with the first track kicking off with a Charles Manson interview clip. This is not for the faint-hearted. Download the mixtape for free on their website.

Flamingods

flamingods.bandcamp.com Flamingods are a jolly ukulele-strumming bunch from London. Headed by Kamal Rasool, who has a thing for collecting instruments from faraway lands, the band make music that jitters and jolts like a tribal rain dance. Their latest album Sun sounds like a mass exodus of toucans and tigers, interspersed with bird calls and popping percussion.

And apart from being cheery, surprising and just plain old nice, Flamingods give their music away for free.

DJ Yo-Yo Dieting

Portlander Pat Maher’s mixes sound like a police van getting smashed up by a bunch of angry youths. It’s unacceptable, yet you can’t stop listening to these warped, damaged, in turns slowed-down and accelerPage 12

I’m afraid that you might tear this column up in rage if I mention chillwave again, but let me assure you that Bong Rodent, apart from having the best moniker, like, ever, puts a very original spin on the whole chillwave/hip hop sampling aesthetic. Forget the hazy, dreamy soundscapes of yesteryear, pep and rhythm flow from this young man’s hands. Download all his stuff for free and email him to say ‘<3’.

Tense Men

tensemen.tumblr.com Tense Men is the new music child of Sauna Youth’s Rich Phoenix and Cold Pumas’ Ollie Fisher. Layering stuttering drum beats, cresting guitars and subdued vocals, these guys create winding roads of intense musical heat. If any visual metaphor must be applied to this band: it’s like watching the rope slowly split during a tug-o-war between two sweaty, fierce men. Check out their new cassette release on Cazenove Tapes.

Hell, one of their videos is a clip from Grease, overridden by a fuzzy distorted mess of thumping guitars and frazzled vocals. And any form of taunting John Travolta is a sign of excellence, I believe. These guys are pretty internet-hyperactive, so check out their site and get your hands on a load of mpfrees and a number of really excellent videos.

Fuck Buttons’ Benjamin John Power has a new solo project on the block. Listening to Blanck Mass is like putting your ear up to a snowy television set as a kid and listening intently to the static electricity nibbling on your cheek. Devoid of rhythm, the music surges and pulsates with beautiful ease as Power layers organ, synth and power drone to create an intergalactic map of sound. You might have to attempt to listen to his debut album a few times. It’s totally worth it though.

Anguish Sandwich

anguishsandwichcamp.bandcamp.com This boy-girl-boy sandwich from Northampton likes to keep it simple.

The drums are bashed without much fuss and the bass player likes to sit cross-legged on the floor when they perform. Lyrics are shouted without much ado, and these kids are brutally honest and cheeky at times. Check out their demo No More Cows: I think you’ll like it. Sandwiches are good, everyone likes sandwiches.

Band mates and husband and wife Danny and Tiffany Preston of ethno-electro band Rainbow Arabia live together in a beautiful old American Craftsman Style house in Echo park on the green slopes of Los Angeles. Turns out they are a pretty normal couple. Time to talk dogs, decoration, fruit juice and studio dynamics.

Bas: Tell me about your house.

Danny: Our house is old and has lots of personality. It’s located in Echo Park; the front window looks out to the downtown skyline. The back looks into our backyard that is full of bamboo and trees, and onto some radio towers on the hillside over the canyon.

This is exactly what I had in mind. The combination of modern and earthy. Ur-

banity and bamboo… beats and ethnic rhythms... Pro Tools and pig skin…

It’s more like giant dogs, Ableton and Casios.

Giant dogs?

We love dogs. Right now we have an Irish Wolfhound/Briard mix and a Bouvier des Flandres. There’s a Basset Hound buried in the backyard.

No... it’s not legal. Here’s a little story. This was the first dog I had on my own. His name was Huddie Ledbetter. Tiff and I were out of town while my best friend was watching him. He was having some health issues. He had a glass eye and was going blind in the other. He ended up passing while away at my friend’s house. All my friends knew Huddie and they all went over to my friend’s house. They wrapped him in a blanket and put him in a pickup truck, then drove to my house with an escort of cars following. They buried a hole and had a service for him, playing Leadbelly and drinking whiskey. Wish I could have been there, but it does sound like a good way to see him off.

That is a nice story. Moving. It really shows how big a role he played in your life. People with dogs are more stuck to the house than people without dogs. Is that why you make music that refers Page 20

to cultures and countries all over the globe... do you travel without moving?

Not sure if that’s a reason why we make our music. We have always been fans of all music and both of us love to travel. Luckily we have lots of friends that house-sit for us, so we can leave town a lot.

How much time do you spend away from home normally?

This year we will be gone for about four months.

You must miss Murphy and Django at these times. (Is it after Django Reinhardt and Eddie Murphy, by the way?)

Yes, we do. You’re right about Django, but Murphy is named after Peter Murphy (the lead singer of Bauhaus). He is very goth.

How can a dog be goth?

It’s his haircut. He’s got bangs that cover one eye.

Wow! Is that natural or groomed? I’ve always been fascinated by pet barbers.

He has the bangs naturally, but the groomer makes the sweep.

It’s about 70 bucks for the full clean and groom. We only have it done every once in a while. They have to be groomed eventually or their hair will get really long.

That’s one of those things you don’t think about when you don’t have a dog. And what makes Django Django?

Django is more like a football player, while Murph is a soft, gentle guy. They are best friends. Who says jocks and artists can’t be besties?

What a perfect world you live in! How does your wife fit into that perfect world? Living in a husband-and-wife domestic environment myself, I feel pretty comfortable asking this question - any fights lately?

It can be difficult... but most fights are about music. We have our studio downstairs. So, tensions can arise downstairs in the studio and then everything goes back to normal when we go back upstairs.

Thanks for being so honest. What do you fight about in the studio?

Stupid stuff. I’d rather not go into detail.

Musical choices and decisions are never stupid. They are essential... so that’s why you fight?

Yeah, I guess. But I think there

Should I ask deeper?

I think it would be better for both of us to be present rather than me speaking for the two of us.

You’re are right... is Tiffany home? (chuckles) The dogs help to ease the tension, I assume. The sentence ‘I’m gonna walk the dog’ must be a common one.

Yes they do. Thank god.

Just one more question about studio dynamics - if I’d ask you ‘What shouldn’t you try at home?’, would your answer be ‘making a record’?

There’s still magic in making a record at home. But if you want to go with that as an interesting answer for the magazine, we can say that.

We could. But seriously, it sounds intense to make a record at home. But intense is close to magic.

Definitely.

How do you combine it with homely activities such as cooking dinner?

We usually have a break to cook dinner. We also make fresh juice every day. It’s pretty routine.

Who cooks? Together?

We take turns. We both have our specialties.

Tiffany makes a mean salmon with dill cream sauce and I’m an expert at making fresh hummus.

So actually, you are quite a normal LA couple living in a good house with two dogs. You cook salmon in dill cream sauce and you drink a daily fresh fruit juice… How does that relate to the kind of music you make?

It doesn’t... our music comes from the clash of multiple influences from our backgrounds. I have a background of blues, new wave, post-punk, reggae, African, all kinds of world music. And Tiff has a background of metal, goth, classic rock, punk rock. The dynamics of the differences of our background make this complex recipe of mixed genrefication.

I’ve seen somebody calling your music ‘fourth-world music’, as opposed to the easier classification of world music.

What are your thoughts on that?

I think the fourth-world pop description is accurate. It just kinda explains this new movement of electronic music that is influenced by the whole world.

Isn’t that also really how things work these days - being connected and blending everything into a personal and almost self-indulgent kind of art? In a way the people in the music scene these days are all hippies with a Macbook in Page 26

the giant digital comfort zone. Geographical location, or where your home is, is not so important anymore. Yet according to your answers - dogs, bamboo, yard, old furniture, juice... it is.Do you and Tiff like to sit on the couch watching TV and eating a TV dinner in sweat pants?

We like to, but we don’t have the time to. I still like to just chill and play records. I used to be a big record collector and have lots of music to listen to that’s not on a Macbook. I wish it was all on my Macbook, though!

Vinyl is hard to digitise. But maybe you shouldn’t anyway. Better put the needle in the groove and pour a glass of wine.

I agree.

So, what record are you gonna play when you get home from work?

Lately, I have been pulling some old Art of Noise records out. No wine tonight though, but a beet-carrotginger-apple juice.

And who’s cooking?

Not sure what’s on the menu tonight. Actually, I have to run to the store. Maybe roast up a chicken.

The White Villa

A very small story about a white house told by Terrie Ex, who is a fortunate home owner and the guitarist of noise-punkavant-jazz band The Ex. Words by Terrie Ex, written down by Floris Dogterom

‘Almost 30 years ago, a bunch of punk bands in Wormer, including us, squatted the former director’s residence of the local paper mill. We needed a place to rehearse and hang out. From the beginning, basically everybody was welcome in the ‘White Villa’, as it is generally known. People and bands would stay with us, eat with us and generally look after one another. I remember that in 1982 the manager of Sonic Youth called us up, asking if the band could stay with us since they had no money for a hotel. Thirty years on, I’m still living in the Witte Villa with my girlfriend and my daughter. We still have a lot people staying over, usually bands who need a place to crash. In my house, things have pretty much stayed the same. I like that.’

We sent a short multiple choice questionnaire to Caleb, one of the two brothers that make up Illinois band Tweak Bird, discussing brotherly dynamics and why you should listen to their heavy yet joyous space and fuzz-fused ditties.

1. About sibling pranks: Have you ever ‘tweaked’ your brother while he was asleep as brothers and sisters do?

A I tweak him every day... while he’s awake!

B No, are you kidding me? To tweak someone is urban slang for something involving someone’s buttocks, a cup of chocolate sprinkles and a small pet.

C He is not my brother. We made the whole kinship up in hope of White Stripes fans hopping over to us.

D Other, namely: Well, if I ever ‘tweaked’ my brother it was defi-

nitely because he ‘tweaked’ me first.

I am not an instigator. We hardly ever ‘tweak’ any more after the accident... we’ve moved apart in respect of each other’s giant egos.

2. How does Ashton manage to simultaneously play the drums, keyboard, sing, keep his glasses on and be all-round awesome?

A In his mind he’s the chosen one.

B He actually also plays my guitar on stage, that’s why I wear this massive native Indian head dress to cover that up.

D Other, namely: Ashton practices being awesome two hours a day. Basically, he always wants more in the music and performance, so if I don’t give it to him, he’ll make it happen on his own. I guess in that way he’s my puppet. I bet he thinks that I’m his puppet, but, no. I just kind of bring my own energy to the band.

Sometimes I’m hot and sometimes I’m cold. He’s finicky too. Tweaky if you will.

3. Why should we all listen to Tweak Bird?

A To get to know the state of Illinois better, because Sufjan left out the whole poppy Black Sabbath-y side.

B Grunge’s not dead.

C Frankly, the songs would sound better on a Korg synth. We encourage our keyboard-playing fans to cover our songs in their homes to fully experience our music.

D Other, namely: All songs sound better through a Korg synth. If you don’t know you must try. All people who attempt to better their lives through listening to music should add Tweak Bird to their playlist.

4. As this is the Don’t Try This at Home Issue: Have you ever tried anything in or outside your home that you regret?

A A Melrose Place marathon.

B Imitating Jackass’ Party Boy by dancing wildly to our own album while ripping my shirt in a local audio store.

C Riding bare-chested on a motorcycle in snowy winter for the sake of the arts (see cover of second album).

D Other, namely: This is a true story from the past. When Ashton and I were in our teens and living at home, we wanted to convert our bedrooms into a two-room home recording studio. The problem was we didn’t have a doorway connecting the two and had no tools, except for a chainsaw we used for cutting up firewood. I took it and ripped a huge crooked hole in the wall just big enough to walk through if you hunched over. Mom was bummed.

Crashing in Geertruida

Ok, so you’ve got this house in this pretty typical Dutch residential area in the northern outskirts of Haarlem. Not exactly the centre of the universe.

And you’re thinking, someone needs to seriously liven this place up. So what are you gonna do?

You’re gonna start putting up shows in your living room. It’s exactly what Yannick, Marijn and Bert did. Their house is called Geertruida and recently it’s been the scene of some amazingly out-of-control house shows featuring bands such as Friendo, Kim Kio, Cold Pumas, Jeans Wilder and TV Buddhas. Photographer Bauke Karel was there to make us feel sorry we weren’t, and to put things in perspective, Isolde Woudstra and her camera payed Geertruida a visit on a quiet, sunny Wednesday morning.

New releases worth your while

Blood Orange Coastal Grooves

Fair Ohs Everything is Dancing

Devonte Hynes is the embodiment of a restless creative.

Among a ton of other pursuits, he started his musical career with London dance punk trio Test Icicles, moved to Omaha, Nebraska to record his debut as folky troubadour Lightspeed Champion at Saddle Creek, has collaborated with The Chemical Brothers, Basement Jaxx, Florence and the Machine and Solange Knowles, and is a fashion consultant for Jay Z’s Rocawear label. None of which is reflected much in his debut album under his new moniker Blood Orange.

Inspired by oriental pop, Prince and Paris is Burning-style street tough drag queens, it’s an album that should annoy me, instead makes for the perfect transition from the party to the afterparty: by turns seductive and melancholic, always very cool.

Perhaps because they didn’t attend an Ivy League school, perhaps because they don’t brag about it, or perhaps because they’re simply a bit late to the party, Fair Ohs have avoided getting lumped in with other bands incorporating elements of world music into their sound.

Their tropical/oriental/Afro pop punk full-length debut is so consistently, guilelessly joyous, the comparisons seem irrelevant.

I wish I could go back in time and be a teenager again, so that I could spend those angsty years listening to stuff this catchy, relatable and smart, rather than fucking Blink 182. Ah well, you live, you learn.

Yellow Ostrich The Mistress

Widowspeak self-titled

Oh, how I love bedroom recording projects. After having released The Mistress for free on Bandcamp and a successful Kickstarter campaign to get it pressed on yellow vinyl, Alex Schaaf ’s 2010 album is getting a proper (and deserved) label release. Sometimes an individual is so talented, you wish you could clone them to enjoy all they have to offer; loop pedals solve this problem nicely, and Schaaf makes deft but judicious use of them here. He’s a compelling enough vocalist and a skilful enough songwriter to pull off everything from a cappella to multi-layered instrumental explosions. Excited to hear what he does with a presumably increased budget in the future.

The debut full-length by this Brooklyn trio immediately calls to mind several fashionable references: Chris Isaak, David Lynch, various druggy, ’90s bands. Singer Molly Hamilton’s breathy, sexy vocals in particular have drawn a lot of comparisons to Hope Sandoval (of Mazzy Star fame), but faster tempos and Rob Thomas’ jangly, surfy guitar lines in particular make their music less oppressively languid than that Monster of Shoegaze. While Widowspeak isn’t this year’s most original record, it is dreamy and seductive enough to soundtrack its own Wild at Heart-style road trip.

Pictureplane Thee Physical

CANT Dreams Come True

On his second full-length, Pictureplane’s Travis Egedy attempts to realise the nü-rave vision he laid out in a cryptic manifesto back in June, nicely summed up by his words: ‘New forms of techno fetish in a world with no true physical limits’. Lyrically, the album focuses on themes of transcending gender and embracing sexuality. Sonically, call it synthwave or a sort of industrial pop which intermingles ’90s diva-sounding vocal samples and Egedy’s breathy vocals with buzzing synths and pounding beats.

One can criticise Egedy’s agenda regarding mainstreaming queer culture, or, like me, one can simply applaud Thee Physical’s viscerally pleasing blend of the rough with the pretty and overall danceability.

The solo debut by Grizzly Bear bassist/vocalist/producer Chris Taylor was recorded with the assistance of Twin Shadow’s George Lewis Jr. While Dreams Come True certainly isn’t nightmarish, it is darker and more synthy than I would have expected, perhaps per Lewis’ influence. Since Taylor helped produce Lewis’ own solo debut album, Forget, last year, I guess this was a case of ‘you scratch my back, I’ll scratch yours.’ And I think this is the beginning of a beautiful friendship, because both albums are lovely and rich.

Aside from the fact that it was neither written nor recorded by Bruce Springsteen, this new Bruce Springsteen album is pretty solid. Kidding, but actually, the thought did occur to me that I’d rather listen to skilled new bands reshape obvious influences into pleasant new material than listen to the walking ghosts those artists have become in their advanced age crank out music so awful it makes me terrified of my own impending mortality. That they also rip off Bob Dylan, Dire Straits and Tom Petty keeps things varied.

I’ll take my dad to their concert and it will make him feel simultaneously comfortable and hip.

After two relatively quiet years, these Sacramento beardos follow up their simultaneous debuts Ganglians and (the superior) Monster Head Room with a double LP. A couple of their early songs (‘Cryin’ Smoke’ especially) had a kind of preternatural knack for melody shining through their shitty production that made them stand-outs of the lo-fi revival in my mind. A cryin’ shame, then, that what I expected to be a triumphant step up sounds halfassed instead. The best I can say is that they seem like a band that will be forgotten, and 20 years from now some new beardo will dig one of their records out of a dusty crate, expecting nothing, and be pleasantly surprised by what he hears – given that he was expecting nothing.

At the heart of this British coming-of-age flick lies a playful friction between daydreaming and reality. Self-absorbed adolescent Oliver (Craig Roberts) would really prefer his life to be a film where he’s as cool as Delon and as witty as Woody Allen. Instead, as usual in mundane teenage life, Oliver gets cheap slow zooms where he’d wish for elaborate crane shots.

At least he’s got a Greek chorus in the form of Alex Turner to accompany him through his tasks, which include saving his parents’ marriage and keeping new girlfriend Jordana (Yasmin Paige). Ayoade toys with style conventions, different formats and visual film quotes; and when a scene from The 400 Blows morphs straight into one from Don’t Look Now, it also means that Oliver might have come a little closer to his dream.

Once again, Queen of Quirk Miranda July (Me and You and Everyone We Know) invites us into her universe. It’s a sad and funny place, where the people are confused, the dresses are vintage and the only emotion is awkward. In The Future, a wildcat is looking for a home. But before Sophie and Jason can devote their lives to fluffy Paw Paw, they’ve got some living to do. But in the process they become hostages of their sense of purposelessness. July offers a magnetic tale of midlife frustration. The quirk level might be too high for some, but those of you who can enjoy conversations with the moon, stopping time and screaming from the window will feel right at home in July’s universe. The Fall 18 September - 013 Post-punk dinosaurs The Fall have been fronted by the legendary Mark E Smith ever since the band was founded in 1977.

Backed by an ever-changing line up, Smith has released no less then 28 studio albums, many of which are truly outstanding.

EMA 18 September - 013 EMA has taken the blogosphere by storm ever since her folk-infused, heartfelt debut album Past Life Martyred Saints came out earlier this year.

Man Man 10 Sept. - Stad als Podium, Haarlem 10 Sept. - TakeRoot, Groningen 18 Sept. - Incubate, Tilburg Forget reliving memories of Beefheart and Zappa, this underrated Philly band serves up the weird indie rock du jour. Frontman Honus Honus & co. throw dashes of piquant percussion (noise makers, fireworks and smashing plates) into a simmering pot of piano, horns, xylophone and more, but it’s their surprisingly poignant songwriting and wildly exuberant live performances that leave the best aftertaste.

Stad als Podium ft. Battles, zZz, Man Man, 65daysofstatic and Sleep Party People 10 Sept. - various locations, Haarlem This small festival offers a nice little opportunity to see Haarlem’s cultural institutions in a different light. Chiptune in the Teylers Museum? Check. Indie folk in Frans Hals? Check. The Moi Non Plus out-creeping David Lynch’s Eraserhead in the Toneelschuur? Oh hell yeah. And if you keep your eyes peeled, you might inadvertently absorb some good old-fashioned culture along the way.

TakeRoot Festival ft. The Tallest Man on Earth, Man Man, The War on Drugs 10 Sept. - De Oosterpoort, Groningen Nevermind their hideous website, this festi-

val’s line-up is good-looking enough to catch the eye. Its 14th edition focuses on a mostly vanilla but still pretty solid take on past, present and upcoming American music.

The War on Drugs 10 Sept. - TakeRoot Festival, Groningen 11 Sept. – Paradiso, Amsterdam 12 Sept. - Incubate, Tilburg Adam Granduciel’s pet project weaves some pretty obvious Springsteen, Dylan and Tom Petty influences into epic Americana that’s well-executed enough to sound like a forgotten track by one of the afore-mentioned artists - both cinematic and comforting in its vague familiarity.

Wooden Shjips 11 Sept. – Vera, Groningen 17 Sept. - Incubate, Tilburg This spacey psychedelic rock quartet, hailing from (you guessed it) San Francisco, features Ripley Johnson, also of Moon Duo fame. Keep your ears peeled for material from their upcoming album West, an homage to Manifest Destiny and the allure of the American West.

Clap Your Hands Say Yeah 13 Sept. – Melkweg, Amsterdam Back in 2005, CYHSY made waves by being one of the first bands to rise to fame based on internet buzz, in spite of self-releasing their (wonderful) debut. The Davids Bowie and Byrne were even spotted at their Page 71

Ganglians 17 Sept. - Incubate, Tilburg 24 Sept. – Bitterzoet, Amsterdam What these Sacramento beardos lack in musicianship or talent per se, they make up for with catchiness and plenty of Beach Boyish good vibrations. Lo-fi pop to smoke a bong to.

EMA 18 Sept. - Incubate, Tilburg 20 Sept. – Paradiso, Amsterdam Erica M Anderson’s solo project rose like a bruised and battered phoenix from the smouldering remains of Gowns, her previous project with her former real-life and onstage partner. It doesn’t appear to have ended amicably, but her tales of descent into the abyss are both terrifying and blissful, and utterly cathartic.

Rock My Religion + Rats On Raft 23 Sept. - Worm, Rotterdam Tonight Worm is showing Dan Graham’s cult film Rock My Religion. This film is a provocative thesis on the relationship be-

tween religion and rock music in contemporary culture with music by Sonic Youth and Glenn Branca. After the film, stick around for the album release party of Rotterdambased post-punk darlings Rats on Rafts.

Sic Alps 24 Sept. - OCCII, Amsterdam Much like their fellow San Franciscan and occasional guest player Ty Segall, Sic Alps make noisy psychedelic pop and are notorious for their exciting and energetic live shows. Read more on page 62.

Off Centre Festival ft. Jamie XX, Shabazz Palaces, Nathan Fake, Sandwell District 29 Sep-01 October - various locations, Amsterdam Off Centre aims to bridge the gap between electronic and live music. Last year’s debut edition featured relative unknowns that went on to become hot shots, such as James Blake, Mount Kimbie and Gold Panda. You might be wise to check out next year’s big names while they’re still hip, rather than wait for their douchebag- and student-packed 2012 performances.

Graphic Detour until 27 November - Graphic Design Museum, Breda The Graphic Detour exhibition showcases works of young designers, who challenge the boundaries of graphic design.

Out of Storage Until 18 December - Timmerfabriek, Maastricht This exhibition is a collection of hundreds of works compiled by the French contemporary art institute FRAC Nord-Pas de Calais.
