The Positive Issue

This is a photo of Damon Palermo, aka Magic Touch, checking out the bottom of a plant pot that is hanging from the ceiling in his kitchen. The photo was shot on film by Nicholas Venaglia in Damon’s home in San Francisco. As you can read in the interview on page 18, Damon is a very positive guy. He likes to look at animals, he likes sunshine, palm trees and Mexican breakfast and he uses emoticons in his emails, especially ‘the one with the guy hugging the other guy’... how’s that for a Magic Touch?

Good times are ahead of us. We’ve extensively recapped 9/11 and thereby concluded an era of fear, grief, violence and mourning. The Middle East was revolutionised overnight. The UK wasn’t. The worst summer ever is behind us. Organic food and local produce is the next big thing. So are community-driven projects. The art world is bursting with entrepreneurial creativity and the alternative music scene is flourishing like never before. The ‘don’t like’ button still does not exist on Facebook and crisis is nothing more than a six-letter word. Enjoy the Positive Issue. You deserve it. Page 6

The promising Finnish kraut band Joensuu 1685 has transformed into a new collective called Siinai. They released their debut album Olympic Games last month, have recorded a second album with Wolf Parade’s Spencer Krug and are touring Europe in November. Certainly one to keep an eye on. Page 11

Raleigh Moncrief www.raleighmoncrief.net

I have a crick in my neck that forecasts either hailstorms or the next big thing in the musical hipstersphere. And the name Raleigh Moncrief sends lightning bolts through my vertebrae, which means nothing but HOT HOT SHIT ALERT. To leave it brief: Moncrief has just been signed to Anticon, he has worked with the likes of Bjork, Dirty Projectors and Marnie Stern and his debut album Watered Lawn is coming out on 25 October. This album is the kind where each track sounds way different but they all tie in together in the end and you totally get it and it’s awesome. Expect rambling samples, electronica and a few guitar strums here and there. Also start unfastening your bra, because when this guy hits the stage you will wanna throw it at his face asap.

SpaceGhostPurrp

facebook.com/spaceghostpurrp Normally, if someone told me to ‘suck a dick for 2011’, I’d retort with something mildly threatening and storm off in a grrrly rage. And yet, when Miami-based 20 year old SpaceGhostPurrp shouts his verbal abuse through my headphones, I cackle and turn up the volume. Mixtape Blvcklvnd Rvdix 66.6 (1991) sounds what its cover looks like, if that makes any sense: it’s a boy’s shoebox collection of horrorcore, ’90s Southern rap and r&b, Mortal Kombat and dad’s old porn VHS stash. No artist before has made me want to swig whiskey, scatter all my Monopoly money on the floor and roll around in it butt naked, covered in Johnson & Johnson’s baby oil. Page 12

Let’s just clear the air and come clean - we probably wouldn’t make that big a deal about these kids if it weren’t for the fact that they are from Russia (yes, Russia!). Congratulations Wavepool Abortion (or Жертва Aборта, if I may introduce them in Cyrillic), you are, like, the first ever cool Russian band we’ve written about in our New Music section and it’s awesome to have you here. Teenage band members Pyotr Reznikov and Matvei Solovyov describe their band as ‘the Ramones and The Beatles taking a big shit.’ I couldn’t have put it better myself. It’s filthy and lo-fi in the best of ways; download this stuff and make your iPod more exotic.

Well Matt, let me tell you, you had us fooled for a sec there, but after typing in a few select keywords, we found out you’re a pretty cool dude and other people should know about you too. Baltimore-based Co La mixes together a sonic soup of intergalactic electronic beats, a bunch of dub, soul, pop whatever-you-please samples that bubble and splutter in waves of rhythm. Keep your ears pricked for more from this fellow as the months get colder and his tracks get HOTTTER. Page 13

Silent Diane www.silentdiane.com

Christine Aprile and Malcolm Elijah belong to that ultra popular gothy circle from Austin, Texas (think Sleep∞Over and Pure X) and make mesmerising synthy music that sends you tumbling down the creaking staircases of dark noisy pop. Amidst the lingering darkness, Aprile’s glass-shattering vocals permeate the vintage drum machines and 8-bit bleeps and crack like a lightning bolt. The effect is startlingly sexy and mysterious. Check out their new single ‘Capella’ on True Panther. Witch house just got a run for its money!

Sunless 97

lesssun.tumblr.com Sunless 97 is one hell of a super-mysterious male-female duo who have no intention of casting off their invisibility cloak at the moment. All I know is that they reside in London and that they’ve released some pretty neat mixtapes not too long ago that feature the likes of Aaliyah and The Jesus and Mary Chain. Their track ‘Illuminations’ is simply delightful with its dreamy boy-girl vocals, warbling chimes and gentle melody. In fact I just played it on repeat, like, a bajillion times, and it sounds as amazing as the first time round. These two have got something pretty ace up their sleeves, don’t lose sight of them. Magic Touch

Somehow, while recording with San Franciscobased band Mi Ami, drummer and beat-maker Damon Palermo found the time to produce some boogie-inducing disco/house-inspired tunes under the moniker Magic Touch. We’d been wondering what’s up with that mystical feature of his. Turns out it’s about giving a lot of hugs, both digital and real life ones. Here’s a little insight into being positive with a magic touch! Interview by Brenda Bosma. Photos by Nicholas Venaglia

It may be a bit odd to do this on the 10th anniversary of 9/11, but as this is the Positive Issue, we’d like to know a thing or two about your positive side. That’s okay. Okay. So, perhaps you can try to help us become a more positive person? Are you a ‘ Yes, We Can’ kind of guy? Because if not, I’m not sure if we can still change the issue into the Negative or Submissive edition. No need. Yes, I am! Sure, hit me. Page 18

Did evolving from an impro noise-ish band to a disco beat solo project have something to do with that kind of attitude? I mean, was your mood changing radically for the better while you were getting more into disco music? Well, I have always been into disco, house etc, so it wasn’t really a drastic mood change. Just a change in sound. But I would say that there is a positive reaction to dance music. The ‘ Yes Sir, I Can Boogie’ reaction!

Magic Touch

Can music be an anti-depressant? It can be a form of that. Music that is soothing and plays in the background, something not too invasive, can be relaxing. When I listen to disco etc, that’s more at night time. Though sometimes disco in the morning can be really good too! Do you like to boogie too? Have the fibres shaken right into your system? I love dancing, but am a bit shy in a club. I dance a bit more in my room than I do when I’m out. What about negative stuff happening to you, do you try to get something positive out of that, to stop drowning in it for too long? It’s easy to get caught in a rut or continue thinking negatively, but that’s not really going to help the situation. It is better to turn it around. Like one time in Cleveland, not many people were at our show and our friends’ band made everyone (mostly local townies that hadn’t come for the show) come onto the stage and dance, and so there were 12 people or so on stage. Sometimes those nights can be

Features

just as fun as a crowded show. You sound like a role model! I’ll talk to you again, when you’ve been in the business for a couple of more years. Well, there’s always breakfast the next morning. That’s one of the most exciting parts about touring. Okay, if a friend who just played a really bad show came up to you right afterwards, would you be honest enough to tell them they sucked or would you avoid the whole situation by offering them a drink? And maybe start a quick monologue about the glass being half full/half empty? I’ll try to change the subject with a full drink and just listen and see where the conversation goes. Giving them a hug and joking about the situation can always be helpful. Magic! speaking of magic. What about your moniker ‘Magic Touch’; is it like 50 Cent’s Magic Stick or Magic Johnson’s willpower? 50 Cent and MJ are awesome, but no, I was really into the song ‘Midas Touch’ by Midnight Star at the time. And I like the use of magical sounds in a lot of disco songs. Page 23

Features

Magic Touch

50 Cent is more and more becoming a Bono. (He wants to fight hunger in Africa.) Magic Johnson is also a known charity giver. Do you ever do anything selflessly? Yes, I try to help people when I can. And for example, I don’t mind people downloading my stuff for free. Often I download music and then go out and find the record. For me it’s kind of like a research method. But if people don’t do that they might play it in a DJ set, show their friends... it has its pros and cons, but honestly, with all the music business crashing, things have been great for my friends and me. Maybe it has created a smaller/tighter community. Can you make a decent breakfast out of it? Yes. What does your perfect breakfast consist of ? I really like Huevos Rancheros, or breakfast burritos, Huevos Divorciados. Mexican breakfast. And coffee. Do you use smiley faces in your emails? Yes! I use the one of the guy hugging another guy a lot, but I think it only works in email. That’s a nice digital message. Talking about all that radiance - why do you care? What keeps you pumpin’? Ha wow, there are so many reaPage 24

sons to care. I like seeing animals a lot, especially dogs and cats. Also sunshine, nature, music, seeing my friends, riding bikes, driving in California, coffee, palm trees. I really like records, too. I get really excited looking at old records. I have fun looking around at thrift shops. Even if I don’t find anything, the covers are often hilarious to look at. Trashy stuff, I can imagine. Moustaches, tight clothes and aerobic power moves. Yeah, I really love that stuff. Okay, last exit: is there anything you’d like to achieve with Magic Touch, other than touching people magically and making them boogie? I want to make good music, collaborate with more friends (two of my friends play on my record) and expand the sound, maybe play live drums. Also I want to DJ. These are achievable goals. I’m sure with your attitude you’ll manage to make that work. Thanks! Thanks for this chat. Have a great day and enjoy your breakfast if you haven’t already. Ok thanks, take care! Peace. Magic Touch plays on 9 October in DOK in Ghent. The show is free for everybody.

Dirty Beaches

Listening to Badlands will teleport you to the front seat of a brand-new Chevy cruising a lost highway. There’s no lovely Betty Draper right beside you though, nor is there an ice cream parlour anywhere in sight. Badlands evokes a much darker image, one drenched in angst and noir. Born in Taiwan, having lived in Honululu, Toronto, Montreal and now Vancouver, drifter Alex Zhang Hungtai aka Dirty Beaches has sprinkled his new album with ‘minimalist rockabilly’. We asked him about it in this little questionnaire. He answered every question with ‘c’. For ‘cherry’, of course. ‘David Lynch can do whatever the fuck he wants’ Words by Brenda Bosma. WHEN DID CRYSTAL ANTLERS SINGER/BASSIST JONNY BELL FIRST EXPERIENCE HAPPINESS? Words by Jonny Bell. Photo by Jonny Bell’s parents

I was probably one or two years old, and my parents were going on a trip to Egypt. I don’t remember much about how I felt about it, but I knew I didn’t want them to leave me so I crawled inside of one of their suitcases and hid and waited. Apparently they searched for me for hours before finding me, snapping a cute picture and tried to explain why I couldn’t go. Later that night my dad brought me a tiny balsa wood airplane and told me everything would be ok and they’d return soon. I’m not sure if I was actually happy about anything beyond the airplane, but I’ll never forget that day - especially cause I still have the picture Crystal Antlers play with True Widow on 7 October in Ancienne Belgique in Brussels. New releases worth your while

By Carly Blair

Veronica Falls self-titled

Active Child You Are All I See

After having released several singles over the past year or two, this Scotland-born, Londonbased quartet reveals their debut full-length. Their simple melodies, boy-girl singalongs and sweetly earnest lyrics undeniably take cues from Scottish twee legends such as The Shop Assistants and The Pastels (lead singer Roxanne has even worked in a coffeeshop co-owned by The Pastels). Their sound is unoriginal, and you could write them off for that reason alone, but then again, they’re a twee band, so they’re kind of inherently unpretentious and unambitious. Since their songs are so catchy, good-natured and well-executed, I don’t particularly care that they’re derivative and find Veronica Falls to be an enjoyably light listening experience.

After easing modern ears into the notion of harp-based dance music with last year’s thoroughly enjoyable Curtis Lane EP, ex-choirboy Pat Grossi returns with his debut full-length. Grossi’s quite the musical chameleon and his colours have changed subtly: the soaring falsetto and harp are still there, but most of the sort of cheesy, blatantly chillwavey synths of the EP are gone, having been replaced with somewhat more r&b-inflected vocals and a post-dubsteppy feel (perhaps inspired by tour mate James Blake). These shifts make the album very of-the-moment and its flagrantly gorgeous, sometimes bombastic elements easier to swallow.

Girls Father, Son, Holy Ghost (True Panther)

This Brooklyn-by-way-of-Long Island dream pop quintet generated plenty of buzz with their first two (free) EPs, and in particular with Color Your Life’s break-out single ‘All Around and Away We Go’, wherein Andrea Estella’s demure vocals enchanted over an irresistibly spacey disco backdrop. Now, on their long-awaited debut album, they’ve been digging deeper into the mines of ’70s disco and easy listening, offering up a fine collection of seductively mellow pop songs. The band purportedly want to make music which you could feel comfortable cheating on someone to. Now we wouldn’t go as fas as to suggest you should give it try. Maybe just listen to the album and take it from there.

For all the accolades their first two releases (Album and the Broken Dreams Club EP) got them, the accompanying singles never prompted me to look any further into this San Francisco duo’s music; it seemed proficient and catchy in an overly familiar way, and I was hungry for new sounds. I’m glad, then, that I finally got around to it this time. While growing up within the Children of God cult, lead singer Christopher Owens wasn’t allowed to listen to pop music; you get the impression that music we’re completely jaded to still seems completely novel to him. Girls’ myriad references to ’60s and ’70s rock and pop (I’m reminded of Pink Floyd especially) and Owens’ simple lyrics could come off as tired and ob Page 35

thew Mondanile’s guitar stylings. On ‘Green Aisles’, Martin Courtney sings ‘All those aimless drives through green aisles, our careless lifestyle, it was not so unwise.’ Well, despite the minor contemplation, the record is no big leap from their trademark, laid-back melancholy pop sound. So if you’re planning any aimless drives in the near future, bring this album: it’s bound to get you lost and then back home again.

Nurses Dracula

Buoyed by good reviews of their debut full-length, this New Jersey lo-fi psych pop outfit relocated to Brooklyn prior to recording their sophomore release in upstate New York with Kevin McMahon (The Walkmen, Titus Andronicus). A bigger budget, better recording equipment and more confidence translate into more fully realised songs than those found on their debut. Slacker bros fear not, they’ve only started to get their shit together; they’re still coasting on good vibes and MatPage 36

(Dead Oceans)

For their follow-up to 2009’s Apple’s Acre, this Portland psych pop trio headed into a proper studio for the first time and enlisted production assistance from Scott Colburn (Animal Collective, Sun City Girls). The production quality isn’t a huge departure, but Dracula does feature more fleshed-out, brain-

ticklingly polyrhythmic percussion than Apple’s Acre. I think Aaron Chapman is one of the most appealingly odd-sounding singers out there nowadays, and Nurses’ delicately ramshackle pop is both distinctive and utterly winsome, containing all the nervous uncertainty, addictiveness and giddiness of a newfound love affair.

Balam Acab Wander / Wonder (Tri Angle)

Music Reviews savvy guy that he is, on his debut full-length Koone has shifted his sound towards something more along the lines of Glinda the Good Witch house: not the least bit creepy, the music here is more like a pastoral counterpart to Burial’s urban vibe, incorporating elements of hip hop, field recordings, folk and drone into a richly textured and meditative whole. In a scene obsessed with darkness, this album is as welcoming as the beam of light penetrating the cavern depicted on its cover.

20-year-old Ithaca college student Alec Koone, aka Balam Acab, achieved notoriety with his See Birds EP back when the whole witch house thing blew up last year, on account of using slow tempos and warped vocals and releasing on witch house stronghold Tri Angle Records. The hype bubble surrounding that microgenre-which-never-actually-existed has basically burst. However, talented and Page 37

True Widow + Crystal Antlers

07 October - Ancienne Belgique, Brussels 20.00 | €12 | Free for Subbacultcha! members Texas bred slowcore-shoegazers True Widow are shrouded in mystery and a sense of impending doom. Together, DH, Nikki and Slim sound dark and delicate with distant vocals layered under the noise of foreboding chords, sizzling cymbals and echoing drums. Their latest LP As High as the Highest Heavens and from the Center to the Circumference of the Earth dropped in March through Kemado. With support from California-based punk soul sixpiece Crystal Antlers, this is going to be one hell of a show.

Pigeons + Miaux

12 October - Renold (KRAAK), Brussels 20.00 | €6 | Free for Subbacultcha! members New York duo Pigeons are coming to Brussels. Sharing a label with Ducktails and Julian Lynch (Olde English Spelling Bee), these cats shook things up with their album Si Faustine last year. They’ve got a handle on the psychedelic side of things and blend it with some fine melodic folk tunes. Their new Album Liasons is set to come out in November on Soft Abuse. Tonight they’re joined by Antwerp-based Mia Prce, aka Miaux, who combines repetitive melodies with groovy uptempo beats.

Craft Spells + Ping Pong Tactics

15 October - Charlatan (Democrazy), Ghent 20.00 | €10 | Free for Subbacultcha! members These Cali kids would probably rather hide in their bedrooms making C86channeling synth pop than actually see the sun; luckily, we live in the Netherlands, and here it’s more fun to dance indoors anyway. With their catchy mix of dream pop and new-wave melodies, the four lads are bound to catapult you right back to the ’80s - you know, hairspray, cocaine, shoulder pads, the works! Support by local lo-fi noise punkers Ping Pong Tactics. Page 49

The Ex

29 October - Vaartkapoen, Brussels 19.30 | €10 | Free for Subbacultcha! members These Dutch anarcho-punks have carved out quite the legacy for themselves over their 30-plus years of existence. They’ve added layers of intricacy and influences to the lo-fi backbone of their music, influenced countless other bands, built a worldwide following and set an excellent DIY example by booking their own shows and releasing and distributing their music themselves.

Dirty Beaches

01 November - Trix, Antwerp Starts 19.30 | €13 | Free for Subbacultcha! members Dirty Beaches is Vancouver-based nomad/crooner Alex Zhang Hungtai. He’s been compared to Elvis, Suicide, Jerry Lee Lewis and David Lynch and he’s made one hell of a badass record called Badlands. It’s a pretty exhilarating collection of songs, ranging from heartbreaking pop songs to violent Page 50

Purling Hiss

01 October - Botanique, Brussels Are you post, new or dark? Well, if you can tick any of these boxes, Erika M Anderson is probably for you. Cunningly tying together grunge roots with a goth heart, this San Fran-based woman is ready to drag you down her dank well in the trail of The Knife, witch house, that three-legged dog from the cover of Alice in Chains’ eponymous third album and even wee Zola Jesus. She’s still not decided whether she prefers a dance groove or the utter horror of grunge guitar brutality, but with only one full album out for now, we’re not gonna rush her to choose.

07 October - Zaal België, Hasselt Purling Hiss are another great band from the Philadelphia area. These heavy trash rockers were introduced to the amazing Woodsist label by their local friend Kurt Vile, and recently their new EP came out on Mexican Summer.

Male Bonding 04 October - Botanique, Brussels Male bonding are a London-based tropical noise punk trio who are touring in support of their sophomore album Endless Now. These guys are known for their loud, energetic live shows, so this is one not to be missed.

True Widow 07 October - AB, Brussels 08 October - 4AD, Diksmuide 13 October - TRIX, Antwerp True Widow will warm up those aural muscles with their mix of psychedelic grunge, shoegaze, doom metal, postrock and slowcore. Read more on page 48.

the themes is ‘shared grief’ - now we don’t know what exactly that means, but it might involve these three noise-makers trashing your eardrums with their wicked sounds. Who knows... bring earplugs just in case.

Entrepot Fictief 07-31 October - Jacob Van Caeneghemstraat 16, Ghent Newly founded art collective Entrepot Fictief host some great exhibitions in October, featuring works from a wide range of promising local artists. The month-long event is backed up by a series of concerts taking place in the first weekend, featuring Belgian acts such as Ping Pong Tactics, Köhn and Floris Vanhoof.

Final Flash + The Luyas 08 October - Beursschouwburg, Brussels If you thought the audio heavyweights behind Black Mountain and Pink Mountaintops had Canadian psychedelia held hostage in their private closet, you obviously haven’t heard Montreal’s Final Flash, who sit rather neatly between a moody teen stop and more recognisable classic rock motifs. But there’s nothing too neat about The Luyas, their Montreal art rock brethren. They’ve taken a grip of Europe this year and refuse to let it slip. Sure, when they’re sweet, they’re super-sweet, but their lulling ramblings are all the better when they dissolve into ruptured freak-outs.

Zun Zun Egui 10 October - Video, Ghent Lord knows the indie folks love an oddball act with a Japanese female singer, and while Bristol’s Zun Zun Egui satisfy this craving, they do so in an extra-unusual fashion by specialising in a rather Africansounding type of experimental rock. Word on the street is they’re great live, so you’d

be wise to sign up for some of their unpronounceable tribal grooveage.

SBTRKT 11 October - AB, Brussels After a series of high-profile remixes, London producer Aaron Jerome recruited a gaggle of guest vocalists, including Little Dragon’s Yukimi Nagano, to accompany him on his lauded debut full-length. It’s post-dubstep-ish à la James Blake or Jamie Woon, but unencumbered by (potentially disappointing) live vocals and eminently more danceable than either; we’ve got high expectations for this one.

Field Festival 12-15 October - Beursschouwburg, Brussels The Field Festival is the official launch of the ‘Sounds of Europe’ project, which offers an up-to-date sampling of the contemporary field recording scene. The festival takes place in Brussels’ Beursschouwburg as well as at Q-02 and boasts an interesting scope of the hidden sounds of Brussels, brought to you by artists including Peter Cusack, Jason Kahn and Pauwel De Buck.

Craft Spells + Ping Pong Tactics 15 October - Charlatan Democrazy, Ghent These Cali kids would probably rather hide in their bedrooms making C86-channeling synth pop than actually seeing the sun; luckily, we live in the Netherlands, where it’s more fun to dance indoors anyway. perimentations in the early ’60s, Morton Subotnik is taking to European roads to discuss his decades-spanning work and to create new A/V experiences in the process. Support from two younger art noise peers.

Yuck 17 October - AB, Brussels Ah, the warm and fuzzies of ’90s ‘alternative rock’. These London kids have barely escaped their teens, but their band, led by the musically impatient Daniel Blumberg, makes music that comes across like a much-considered, well-worn mixtape. From Dinosaur Jr through Pavement to Eric’s Trip, it’s undeniably familiar but still fresh.

Bill Orcutt (Harry Pussy) + Räpe Blossoms 18 October - Les Ateliers Claus, Brussels 19 October - Gunther, Antwerp In the past, Bill Orcutt was all too happy to mask his punk tendencies with atonal riff confusion. These days he’s gone all acoustic, but the spirit remains the same, infusing his tough structures with dirty bouts of

finger-shredding blues. Noise freaks Räpe Blossoms are all rhythm, violence and sweat so check your melodic ear at the door.

Skeleton$ 18 October - Vooruit, Ghent Subbacultcha! favourites Skeleton$ performed at our five-year anniversary party in Amsterdam a couple of years back and we’ve been keeping an eye on them ever since. They have just put out a new album featuring more of their trademark African melodies and frantic rhythms.

Tinariwen 19 October - AB, Brussels Consisting of several Tuareg nomad musicians from the Saharan Desert region of Mali, Tinariwen were formed in refugee camps in Libya in the ’70s. Several of their members served in Gaddafi’s army back in the day and later fought for the Tuareg rebel movement, and they built a following by recording politically-themed songs on cassette and circulating them throughout Saharan Africa. blues’ is as extraordinary as their story, mixing elements of West African, Arab and Berber music as well as classic rock into an intricate and relaxing whole.

Real Estate, Spectrals 22 October - Charlatan, Democrazy, Ghent These New Jersey natives relocated to Brooklyn, recently signed to Domino and are now set to drop their sophomore record in mid-October. Martin Courtney’s dreamy vocals and Matthew Mondanile’s distinctive guitar sound in particular set their tunes apart from the rest of the lo-fi pack. Overall, their lo-fi psych pop floats in and out of memory, like idle summers spent high on the beach or coasting along highways, proving that there’s much more to Jersey than Snooki and Guido bro bar brawls.

Faust 25 October - Les Ateliers Claus, Brussels As kraut as krautrock comes, these ultimate outsiders are still pushing boundaries 40 years after their debut. Rather than a plain old retrospective, expect plenty of pieces from their 2011 puzzle, Something Dirty.

Wild Beasts 25 October - Le Grand Mix, Tourcoing (Fr) These English boys sure love their overwrought ’80s pop moments, having smoothed out the production creases across three albums on Domino in recent years. Beyond their bouts of Spandau Ballet falsetto, their greatest strength seems to be balancing on that fine line between mainstream tosh and credible pop.

Sonic City curated by Liars ft Liars, Factory Floor, HTRK, Washed Out, Oneida, Melvins 28-30 October - De Kreun, Kortrijk

You gotta love a bit of curation, right? It cuts the crap and all that. The lovely Sonic City might not have the international clout of All Tomorrow’s Parties, but when you’ve had leading bands such as former curators Deerhoof in charge, you have to embrace the surprises. This time it’s those Liars holding the invitation cards, bringing in hip young things such as Washed Out and Factory Floor alongside the challenging drone movements of Oneida and crazed noise veterans The Melvins.

Bozar Electronic Weekend 28-29 October - Bozar, Brussels This annual event offers a sample of some of the best progressive electronic music as well as visual arts. Once again, the guys from Bozar put together a great line-up featuring promising artists such as Eleven Tigers and Lucky Dragons as well as bigger names, including Modeselektor and Plaid.

The Ex 29 October - VK* Concerts, Brussels These Dutch art punks passed through Brussels in their expanded Brass Unbound formation at the end of August. It was electric, and you needn’t expect anything less from their more traditional quartet formation either. Passing the 30-year marker has only energised them, the frenetic guitar duelling of Terrie Ex and Andy Moor charged even further by the staccato vocal punches of newish ‘singer’ Arnold de Boer (Zea).

Three Trapped Tigers 31 October - Le Tipi (Collectif JauneOrange), Liège The only Belgian show of London-based Three Trapped Tigers is definitely one to check out. Their energetic mix of noise and electronics combines the best of bands like Battles and Foals. Page 59
