PRODUCT NEWS

Driving hybrid vehicles: what happens when… … you pull away from a standstill or drive slowly in a hybrid car?

Introducing e-BOXER The e-BOXER self-charging hybrid range is a continuation of Subaru’s commitment to ensure that everything we do is Better Where It Matters. You can expect the same 5-star safety, go-anywhere capability, and rugged reliability that our SUVs are renowned for; with the added benefits of battery based power. And all without the need to plug in to recharge. We’ve merged Subaru’s core DNA with hybrid technology, so you have the best of both worlds. How does the e-BOXER work? Self-charging hybrids have both an electric motor and combustion engine. E-BOXER, the self-charging hybrid range from Subaru, pairs a self-charging battery-powered electric motor with an e-BOXER petrol engine. The engine and motor work together to adjust to the most efficient driving mode depending on the driving speed and conditions, reducing CO2, NOx and particulate emissions, and make driving more efficient by using less fuel.

6

From the initial start when pulling away or driving at slow speeds in traffic, the battery-powered electric motor alone drives the car. The petrol engine remains off, using no fuel and creating no emissions. In city traffic, this EV mode offers highly efficient – and completely clean – power to drive.

…you accelerate fully in a hybrid car? Under full acceleration or increased load (like climbing a hill) both the petrol engine and electric motor work together providing instant, responsive power. Excess engine power also recharges the battery.

…you decelerate and brake in a hybrid car? When you decelerate or brake, energy from the car’s movement that would otherwise be lost is captured and used to recharge the battery. This is called regenerative braking.

SUBARU MAGAZINE

When pulling away, or in slow traffic, the electric motor alone does all the heavy lifting. Whilst at cruising speed, the 2.0L direct injection e-BOXER petrol engine drives the car – but also recharges the battery. When accelerating or under load, both the engine and the motor provide power together. The electric motor power assistance – Motor Assist – is completely automatic. It works seamlessly with the e-BOXER engine to give you a rewarding drive. 100% Subaru. But now with hybrid power. The launch of e-BOXER brings together proven Subaru engineering to create the ultimate driving package: a choice of new, dynamic hybrid models that represent our best Subarus yet. Every vehicle element – system layout, safety package, driving performance, capability and versatility – has been carefully optimised. Taking Subaru’s core DNA and merging it with hybrid technology, e-BOXER brings you the best of both worlds. Even better acceleration, balance and handling With a battery-powered electric motor assisting the new e-BOXER petrol engine, Subaru’s mild-hybrids make every bit of energy count. Cleaner and more fuel-efficient than conventional petrol or diesel power, e-BOXER vehicles offer more responsive, instantaneous acceleration and terrain-gripping torque. Exceptionally smooth and refined, reduced vehicle noise and vibration mean Subaru’s ride quality is now better than ever.

Subaru’s core DNA merged with hybrid technology

With a compact, light high voltage battery, the e-BOXER range also has an even lower centre of gravity and a betterbalanced vehicle weight distribution, further enhancing handling.

The e-BOXER range offers the same peace of mind

Go-anywhere All-Wheel Drive capability In e-BOXER models, Subaru’s superior All-Wheel Drive capabilities are even better. When negotiating long, bumpy and challenging tracks or slopes, the electric Motor Assist enhances torque response. Inclines can be climbed smoothly without stepping too hard on the accelerator. In addition, the towing capacity and capability of Subaru’s e-BOXER range will be one of the best in its class due to the smaller battery design and its positioning, positively influencing the weight of the vehicle. The e-BOXER uses a customised Lineartronic transmission that integrates an electric motor, powered by a high-voltage Lithium-ion battery. Its position in the car means the basic structural layout of the Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive drivetrain remains unchanged. As well as lowering the overall centre of gravity even further, the front/rear vehicle weight distribution is better balanced. Safety first. Always With numerous outstanding safety features fitted as standard, Subaru e-BOXER self-charging hybrids

8

offer the same peace of mind as the rest of the Subaru range. Some of these are listed opposite. Subaru’s e-BOXER range is built on the new Subaru Global Platform (SGP) offering improved all-around safety, better stability and handling, and enhanced ride quality. Already standard for XV and Impreza, the all-new e-BOXER Forester now joins the platform in a significant upgrade for the model. The benefits are far-reaching; for example, high-tensile body and reinforced battery frames protect the high-voltage electrical components in the e-BOXER so they stay secure, even in a rear collision. The lower centre of gravity design, enhanced suspension system, and rigidity improvements provide a vehicle that responds immediately when evasive actions are taken, helping you to avoid hazards on the road. In the event of a collision, the low-mounted engine and gearbox are designed to both absorb the impact and drop safely below the passenger compartment, protecting occupants legs. To allow for this movement, the cradle securing the engine is engineered to collapse, allowing the engine to slide downwards.

SUBARU MAGAZINE

Key features Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive Always-on Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive distributes maximum power to all four wheels all of the time, which means better traction on wet and slippery roads. The entire drive system, from the Boxer engine to the rear differential, is mounted in a straight symmetrical line, providing exceptional stability, traction and improved performance and is standard across the Subaru SUV range. X-MODE with Hill Descent Control X-MODE gives you control you can rely on at the push of a button, taking control of the engine, transmission, Symmetrical AllWheel Drive, brakes, and other components to help you navigate extreme terrain confidently. When X-MODE is activated, Hill Descent Control automatically maintains a constant speed when travelling downhill: all you have to do is steer. EyeSight technology Subaru’s advanced driver assist

technology is like a second pair of eyes on the road. A high-resolution two-camera system scans the environment, accurately tracking vehicles, motorcycles, bicycles and pedestrians. EyeSight* comprises six safety systems that, where needed, can provide warnings and even activate collision avoidance assistance. Subaru Rear Vehicle Detection Subaru Rear Vehicle Detection (SRVD) includes Blind Spot Monitoring, Lane Change Assist & Rear Cross Traffic Alert. Sensors placed at the rear of the vehicle alert you to vehicles in your blind spots for safer lane changes and can also warn you of potential collision danger when reversing out of a parking space. Driver monitoring system Driver Focus keeps a watchful eye over the driver to help ensure their attention is focused on the road ahead. Using an infrared LED and a camera, the system monitors the

driver for signs of inattention or sleepiness and if detected, warns them to refocus their attention. Side View Monitor The Side View Monitor displays an image from the camera installed on the passenger-side wing mirror on the Multifunction Display, reducing your blind spot and making street parking a breeze. Reverse automatic braking When you’re reversing, four sonar sensors on the rear bumper detect obstacles. When the vehicle detects a possible collision you’re alerted. If you fail to respond by pressing the brake, it is applied automatically to prevent a collision or reduce the impact from a collision. High Beam Assist High Beam Assist (HBA) increases visibility and safety when driving at night by automatically toggling the high beams on and off when oncoming traffic is detected.

Please check model specification for feature availability / details. Models shown may not reflect UK specification *EyeSight is a driving support system which may not operate optimally under all driving conditions or for all objects. The driver is always responsible for safe and attentive driving and observance of traffic regulations.

IN THE NEWS

SUBARU -THE BEST MANUFACTURER FOR SAFETY Subaru has been voted Best Manufacturer for Safety Features in the 2019 Auto Express Driver Power Survey, the UK’s number one car ownership survey – beating off stiff competition from 29 other manufacturers to take the no.1 spot.

Safety has always been central to the development of Subaru cars and we’re delighted that our on-going commitment to safety has been recognised by Subaru owners in the UK. We’ve been crash-testing our vehicles since the early 1960s, long before industry-wide testing was introduced, and all Subaru SUVs (plus Impreza and Levorg) hold the maximum 5-star Euro NCAP safety rating. Subaru cars are fitted with a host of innovative safety technologies as standard and we remain committed to the welfare of all road users, recently announcing our vision to eliminate traffic accident deaths involving Subaru vehicles by 2030. Subaru UK Managing Director Chris Graham commented on the win: “We are delighted that Subaru has been recognised for the quality of its safety systems by the people that matter most – Subaru owners. The accolade is testimony to Subaru’s on-going commitment to build the safest cars on the road today, with our latest safety technology fitted as standard across the SUV range.” Steve Fowler, Auto Express editor-in-chief said: “Subaru has long been known as a maker of tough, well-built,

all-wheel drive models. More recently, Subaru has placed its EyeSight system at the heart of its model range. The feature is a well-judged package of safety systems powered by a pair of cameras to scan the road ahead. This year, owners have consistently praised Subaru’s safety credentials in our Driver Power survey, placing the manufacturer ahead of some far-larger manufacturers.” Find out more about our award winning range at subaru.co.uk

SUBARU OWNERS

OUR SUBARU SAVED OUR LIVES The Outback. Capable. Unashamedly tough. And, crucially, engineered to save lives. As Rob and Rachel Willoughby found out when they were hit by another car.

Built to keep people alive

Rob and Rachel Willoughby

Make no mistake, the Outback is solidly-built. Which is pretty useful if forced off the road by another car at speed. It was in March when Rob and Rachel were driving their 2006 Outback along a flat, main road in Lincolnshire when they spotted a car coming out of a long sweeping bend, heading dangerously towards them. Rob reacted like anyone else: he took evasive action by trying to swerve away, but there was nowhere to go. Farmland flanked both sides of the road and the Outback took a big hit right on the fuel tank’s chin. A shocking scene Doing a serene 30 mph, Rob was just cantering along, but the force from the car that hit them was such that it flipped the Outback into the air, off the road and onto the rough farmland alongside. It rolled three times with its human cargo on spin wash before coming to an abrupt halt. Rob takes up the story. “I managed to clamber out, but Rachel was trapped inside. That’s a sight you shouldn’t have to see, but I could tell she was more in shock than injured. Thankfully, the emergency services swooped in within a matter of minutes – police, fire brigade and even the air ambulance. They pulled her out quickly and treated both of us at the scene of the crash for cuts, bruises and nasty scrapes. We were then taken to hospital and assessed. Apart from shock and a little whiplash, we were both fine, just a little dazed.” What’s the damage? Rob makes no bones about it. He swears that the Outback saved their lives. Even though the car was 13 years old, its sturdiness, safety prowess and bulletproof build quality kept its precious cargo inside safe and sound. Side impact protection built into all doors took the full force of the

12

collision and its circular reinforcement frame dissipated the energy away. Rob explains, “The car took the brunt of the accident and kept us both intact. There was hardly even any broken glass. It just soaked up the punishment as it somersaulted over the hard, sun-baked ground. I don’t know why I was surprised though, we knew it was super safe and we never ever had a single issue with it. Totally reliable, mechanically spot-on and built to keep people alive.”

SUBARU MAGAZINE

Of course, the Outback had taken several large beatings, but the damage to its occupants was minimal. Back in the saddle Unsurprisingly, many people involved in accidents stay off the road for a while after a big collision. It can dent confidence quite badly - but not Rob. After the all-clear from the hospital on the Friday, the first thing he did Monday morning was to ring Charles Warner Subaru in Lincoln to purchase another Subaru Outback. “I’ve always had good dealings with them and I decided I wanted to get back in the saddle quickly with a new Outback. We chatted about the crash, trumpeted its safety spec and talked through options for my new Outback. After everything Rachel and myself had just gone through, I couldn’t drive anything else. I owe my life to this tough-mobile.” Rob chose the Outback 2.5-litre SE Lineartronic, a car he could trust and enjoy driving again. Picking it up a couple of weeks later, he even drove the same stretch of road where the accident occurred as a confidence booster.

Safety first is safety always Subaru has always put safety at the forefront of product development and was recently voted Best Manufacturer for Safety Features - ahead of 29 other manufacturers - in the 2019 Auto Express Driver Power Survey. The Outback has been awarded the maximum five-star rating in Euro NCAP’s crash tests, with impressive scores in all areas and maximum ratings in side-impact and dummy tests. All Outback models have EyeSight, Subaru’s innovative driver assist system, fitted as standard - in addition to a raft of additional safety tech. You can see why Rob simply won’t drive anything else. Rob sums up his decision to stick with the Outback rather nicely. “Staying alive because of a car is probably the bestever reason to stay with that car.” We couldn’t put it better. SUBARU MAGAZINE

In early 2019 Subaru UK partnered with British Continental cycling team WIGGINS Le Col, providing a fleet of Outbacks to support the team in their race schedule at leading development races throughout the UK and across Europe.

LIFE IN THE FASTER LANE WITH TEAM WIGGINS LE COL’S JAMES FOUCHÉ We chat to James Fouché at this years Tour de Yorkshire, a young New Zealand cycling star with Team WIGGINS Le Col, about life in the peloton, his appreciation of the Outback and the ‘glorious’ Yorkshire weather. James Fouché is absolutely exhausted. Drenched and bedraggled, too, by the driving rain and gale-force winds that the ‘beautiful’ Yorkshire climate has thrown at the elite cyclists all day. But he couldn’t be happier. After Stage Two of the Tour de Yorkshire (132KM from Barnsley to Bedale), he’s currently co-leader of the King of the Mountains. Which in layman’s terms means he has climbed up the Cote de Lindley quicker than any mountain goat.

James Fouché

“A good day at the office”, is how James describes it, “but it’s going to get tougher for me as the race unfolds.”

Follow Team WIGGINS Le Col  OfficialWIGGINS  WigginsOfficial  wigginsofficial

At just 21 years-old, James has battled through the junior ranks and earlier this year was crowned New Zealand National Road Race Champion. Fouché joined Team WIGGINS Le Col in 2018 after they saw just how fast he was progressing (and pedalling) in the elite race world. He was also excited to hear about Subaru and Team WIGGINS Le Col’s partnership for 2019; knowing that he’s got a safe, reliable support car behind him makes every painful, furious kilometre across Europe a little easier. “The support car fleet and team are great. It’s really important for me to have quick fixes if I have an issue on the road. They also provide me with valuable information on what’s ahead through the radio – type of terrain, bends coming up, wind direction, where the rest of my team are - it makes things so much safer. In the peloton, too, everyone’s playing chess, trying to outthink and outmanoeuvre the other. Thankfully, our Outback fleet has proved to be skillful on all roads: totally reliable, safe and surefooted in some of most challenging conditions I’ve ever ridden in.”

Gabriel Cullaigh

That, in our books, makes him a big fan of the brand – and Subaru would definitely be on his short-list for a future purchase. 15

F E AT U R E A R T I C L E

After chilling out and getting the team tactics for the next day’s stage, we sat down with James for a chat about life as a professional cyclist. We wanted to know how he started and how hard competing at this level is. “I started cycling at school. I did a triathlon for a few seasons then I moved just to cycling because I wasn’t too good at swimming. I came to Europe for the first time in 2017 off the back of some good race wins in New Zealand and Belgium.” James hit the ground running, grabbing second place in the Classica da Arrabida in Portugal and instantly became ‘the fast, strong cyclist to watch’. Of course, though, the climb to world level isn’t easy. “The hardest part about being a pro cyclist is having to be on your game for eight or nine months of the year. Every race, you have to go hard or go home. Leave everything on the course. Luckily I have two great coaches, Patrick and Tammy Harvey, who saddle any of my worries, so I can just focus on riding my bike.” So, that’s exactly what he’s been doing. Winning National Championships and challenging various older, more established and decorated World Tour riders along the way.

James Fouché competing at the Tour de Yorkshire

And Yorkshire. What does he make of it? “It’s my first time here and the experience has been amazing so far. The spectators along the route have been unreal. The countryside is spectacular and varied. The weather, however, has been atrocious. Actually, my favourite place to ride is definitely the training grounds in Auckland.”

With Team WIGGINS Le Col and Subaru’s help, James believes that his goal to compete and win at World Tour level is very realistic. That’s if he doesn’t get lost.

Team WIGGINS Le Col riders at the Tour de Yorkshire

“I got lost on a non-supported ride last year after some bike issues. A short five-hour ride turned into nine hours, and I had to use the light on my phone to find my way back. I won’t be doing that again.” Which just goes to show how important it is to have great support behind you all the way.

SUBARU MAGAZINE

THE OUTBACK. A REAL TOUR DE FORCE What’s life really like as a support car driver in an elite cycle race, keeping up with the action as the riders tackle some of the country’s trickiest roads, bends, climbs and descents? We caught up with Simon Cope, driver of the team’s support vehicle, at this year’s Tour de Yorkshire and found out just how the fleet of Outbacks are faring through the team’s punishing race schedule.

How are you finding Yorkshire? We’re really enjoying it. The fans have come out in their hordes, despite the rain, and the routes are pretty spectacular. Not that I’ve got much time to take them in! A couple of our riders are right up there in the mix and we’re hoping that they’ll be there at the business end of the race, too.

What does the role of support driver involve? Basically, we’re the back-up for all our riders. And by back-up, I mean multi-taskers. Everything from route planning and communication to quick mechanical fixes on the course and even motivational encouragement when legs and minds are screaming. We’re in constant radio contact with all our riders and follow their every move. We’ll only catch up with the peloton when one of our riders needs something or there’s been a crash. The roads have been pretty treacherous, so we’ve been keeping a careful eye on everyone.

So, it can be hairy? Yes, especially when you think the riders are reaching speeds of 50km/hour. You’ve got to have your wits about you, but there’s an etiquette for support drivers that we all understand. We accelerate on the riders’ right and then get out of the way as fast as we can. As an ex- pro rider myself, I know how the peloton ebbs and flows. You’re guided by instinct a lot of the time. Tell me about the Outback. How’s it been to drive? Brilliant. It has to be. This is cycling on the edge, so only a top-class performing car will do. It handles the bends, climbs, descents and all the different terrains as well as, if not better, than the riders do. The suspension is silky smooth and it’s

got loads of torque when you really need to put the power on. What impresses you most about it? To be honest, everything. Safety-wise, you know you can push it to the absolute limit without taking any risks. Anything challenging, it leaves for dust. And its EyeSight feature really does look out for you, it’s like having a co-driver – it constantly alerts you to any trouble ahead. Fans getting over-excited, sheep straying, riders slowing. ‘Nowt to worry about’, as they say around these parts. It’s been pretty wet and slippery on most stages so far, but it’s the riders I can worry about, not the car. The Outback’s Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive is a real confidence-booster for me and I can just get on with my job. So, yes, it’s safe, skillful, reliable and has got all the bottle you need. A real tour de force. Is its load-carrying a bonus? Absolutely. It’s packing space. Seven spare bikes on the roof, one mechanic in the back, chains, crank sets, spare wheels – it becomes a mobile workshop on wheels. Food, drink bottles, gels, wet weather gear – you name it, we’ve got to have it to hand. What happens at the end of each stage? For the riders, it’s a cool down, chill out and then tactics talk for the next day. For me, it’s prep, strategy, prep. Someone once called us support drivers ‘the unsung heroes’ – which is cool – but I guess the car should take some of the credit, too! We left Simon to give his evening team talk for the last stage of the race – 175km from Halifax to Leeds. It turned out to be a real cracker and Team WIGGINS Le Col’s young starlets Mark Christian and Gabriel Cullaigh came in a credible 15th and 16th place in the Overall General Classification respectively. Supported all the way by the ever-reliable Outback. Find out more about the Outback at subaru.co.uk/outback

A LASTING LEGACY In a touching tribute to his grandparents, Liam Sawyer is restoring their 1998 Subaru Legacy Outback back to its former glory – and raising much-needed funds for Marie Curie cancer care along the way. Liam’s grandparents Vic and Rose

We couldn’t resist having a peek. After all, seeing an original 1998 Subaru Legacy Outback Estate Mk2 is a bit of a treat. It’s a classic that has stood the test of time and it’s not often you see one. A rare find, indeed, especially since it has been sitting in a field for quite a few years in Balsall Common, Coventry. Liam fondly recounts how it got there. “My grandmother Rose went to Carstins, in Balsall Common, to look at a new Subaru Forester with

my grandfather Vic. They were off to their static caravan in Wales for the weekend and got chatting to the salesman. He suggested that they try the new Legacy Outback Estate 2.5 Auto, a demo model he had with only three miles on the clock. Not just for a short test drive, though, but for the whole trip!” Of course, driving along mountainous roads full of twists and turns played directly to the Legacy’s unbeatable handling and prowess – so much so that it quickly became part of the family. Over the next few years, it became a source of pride and joy for

20

the couple as they sauntered around the country with the kids in tow. Unfortunately, medical ailments meant it became increasingly difficult for Rose to drive. The car she regarded as ‘the best she had ever owned’ was parked up in a field at the back of their farm. It had 69,000 miles on the clock.

The nurses were brilliant and were all especially kind to my grandmother.” In tribute to the memory of his grandparents, Liam started his own passion project last August.

Sadly, Vic passed away in 2015 and Rose was diagnosed with breast cancer around the same time. Dark days indeed, alleviated only by the

As he gazed across the farmland, the seeds of a restoration project were planted. Although the Legacy lay in the field battered and bruised, he thought that bringing the car back to its former glory would be a fitting tribute to his grandparents’ driving adventures. His nan and grandad’s car, in fetching red with grey trim, had survived the worst of the British climate, the excesses of the noughties and England’s World Cup defeat, pretty much intact. “The car was mechanically sound despite the years off the road – no surprise for a Subaru! However, fate and Subaru UK came to the rescue. “My grandfather was a bit of a celebrity in our village, everyone knew him. So when the locals got wind of the project, they generously donated funds to help. It helped restore my faith in the community, I can tell you.” Help is at hand Subaru fans across the country then started to donate parts too, but some still proved a stumbling block. That’s where Subaru UK stepped in to lend a helping hand. Gary Langford, Manager of Subaru UK’s Parts Operations, commented “It was a pleasure to help out with such a worthy cause. It’s not often that

we get the opportunity to be involved with something of this nature and it’s a privilege to be involved in such a passion project. We wish Liam good luck in his fundraising venture – he has our full support.” Liam is delighted with the help and guidance he has received from Gary and Subaru UK . “They’ve been absolutely fantastic and refreshed parts other manufacturers couldn’t reach. I’ve been back and forth, nagging and annoying, and they’ve always turned up trumps.” Liam’s project is now nearing completion, with just a few tweaks to be made and fixtures to be found. “I take her to shows, events, runs and on convoys, especially for Subaru fans to see. We ask everyone who shows an interest in her to make a small donation. We’ve built up a huge following which means that Marie Curie will benefit greatly.

Liam Sawyer

You know, people often ask me, once she’s completed, would I be interested in selling? I think you can guess the answer. Not a chance.” We leave Liam to his tinkering at this point, having been granted a special audience. It really is something to behold – a lasting legacy to his grandparents and their love for the car.

THE CAR THAT FLOATS THEIR BOAT The Wheelyboat Trust is a small national charity making big waves: it’s dedicated to providing disabled people with access to waterborne activities via specially-designed wheelchair-accessible boats. We chat to director Andy Beadsley (himself a wheelchair user) about the charity and how his Subaru Outback provides the wheels that pull the Wheelyboats. The Outback is Andy’s eighth Subaru. No, hang on he says, ninth (or even tenth if you count his wife’s Forester). As you can tell, he’s a bit of a fan. Not surprising really, when you understand what he needs the car to do - hitch up, tow and deliver his charity’s Wheelyboats to numerous waterways up and down the country.

Andy and his dog Molly

Andy explains further, “Our aim is to provide disabled people with freedom and independence on the water. That’s why we do what we do. But our Wheelyboats would be left high and dry if we couldn’t transport them safely and reliably to spots as close as possible to the water’s edge where they’ll be launched.” “On a personal level, too, I need an SUV I can actually get in and out of easily. Other big towers seem to have seats halfway up a mountain, whereas the Outback is a gentle hop from my wheelchair.” Roll up, roll up Formed in 1984, the charity was originally called the Handicapped Anglers Trust. Founding Trustee, Alan Faulkner, conceived the idea of the Wheelyboat after his friend, Bill Buchanan, was paralysed in an accident on his farm. Alan was determined that in spite of Bill’s disability, he would find a way for him

to continue angling. A real passion project, plans for a prototype ‘roll-on roll-off’ wheelchair-accessible boat were drafted and the first Wheelyboat was officially launched by HRH Prince Charles at Fishmongers’ Hall, London in 1985. In 2004 the name was changed to The Wheelyboat Trust, reflecting the broader aims of the charity to offer purposebuilt boats for activities that included fishing, but also powerboating, nature watching, adventure and pleasure trips. As Andy says, the benefits of the wind in your hair and the spray on your face can never be overstated. Freedom and independence are lifelines for so many. Come in boat number 200! 2019. Get the champagne bottle and ribbons ready, because this year is the charity’s 35th anniversary and the trust are celebrating by launching Wheelyboat number 200. The new boat will potentially be used for a sea scout group on the Thames in Surrey or for a newly-formed accessible boat club in Oxfordshire, also on the Thames.

One of Andy’s Wheelyboats ready for delivery

“Our latest model is the Coulam Wheelyboat V17 and this will be going to the sea scouts. It will accommodate eight people in total including four or five wheelchair users. The larger Coulam Wheelyboat V20 seats ten people and will be going to Oxfordshire. We have 14 projects in hand at the moment so it’s difficult to pin down exactly which Wheelyboat will be the 200th!” The Wheelyboats themselves are purpose-built and beautifully designed by a naval architect. Up to 24 ft long, they have been modified to provide roll-on, roll-off access, drive-from-wheelchair helm, an open level cockpit, hydraulic steering and a whole host of other features. A tow in the water Andy does not know of any other charity quite like themselves and, as such, the orders keep rolling in (Europe has already come calling). Indeed, any project where the public benefits can acquire a Wheelyboat, with the charity designing, building and helping to fund a vessel. “For me, it’s a vocation rather than a job. Made so much easier by the smile on the faces of the people out on the water. And, of course, by some very capable wheels that tow us closer to where we want to be. As near to the water as possible. No stress, no fuss.” The Outback’s permanent Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive provides unrivalled traction and control that has proven invaluable to Andy and The Wheelyboat Trust over the years. Andy’s Outback is crucial in ensuring the Wheelyboats get delivered from A to B every time. We get what he’s saying. No other car floats Andy’s boat like the Outback. ‘THE JOB’S CHANGED, SO THE CAR NEEDED TO’

Julian in the early 00’s

Now into its eighth series, Channel 5’s The Yorkshire Vet follows the trials and tribulations of Julian Norton’s veterinary life across rural Yorkshire. With nearly a year with his new Outback under his belt, we catch up with Julian to find out how he’s getting on with his new(ish) car and how it compares to his much-loved Impreza from the early 2000s. Remind us about your first experience with Subaru? That’s going back a few years, now. My first Subaru was an Impreza sport, back in the days when it was making inroads in the World Rally Championships, around the turn of the Millennium. I had a Sport, which I absolutely loved, especially flinging it around the twisty turny roads of the North York Moors. It was mud-splattered bluish-red and ended up with over 100,000 miles of fun on the clock. How long did you have it for? Three years. Then I bought another one with an updated body skin and improved transmission. Yet again, I felt like half vet and half rally driver! I moved away from Subaru subsequently – and since then there has never been a car that could quite match up to the capability credentials of my first Subaru. There’s always been something missing! So, that’s when I decided to get back behind the wheel of an Outback towards the end of last year. You’ve had your Outback for the best part of a year now. What’s made you fall back in love with Subaru? Besides the capability of the car, the vast amount of space and oomph, really. We have a growing family – my two boys are almost bigger than me now – so it

26

was really a matter of space. And, of course, I needed a car that could carry all kinds of veterinary kit for daily farm visits and emergency call-outs. My boot is always full of veterinary equipment – calving jacks, medicines and so on, so the back seats need to be big enough for the family. Would you say Subaru’s have improved since your Impreza days? Yes, definitely. I got my Outback last autumn and it’s been a bit of a godsend. It handles the hills and dales around here superbly – much better than my Impreza did – and it has still got that extra oomph that I need to get up some of the trickier, steeper hills. Especially when the ice bites. Cattle and sheep also seem to be on a mission to test its grunt by moving to the most inaccessible places on the farm that they can find! I love the challenge of driving into the field to treat a cow. The permanent four-wheel drive is crucial for me. And all the safety tech is an added bonus! And now you’ve always got a camera crew in tow! At times, my crew feel like a second family! A

cameraman and sometimes a sound recordist, both praying that it’s either a funny or an exciting call-out. Anything out of the ordinary makes for great telly! They have lots of kit, too, so it’s really helpful that the Outback is so cavernous inside.

example, I carry around with me a portable ultrasound scanner, which I use for examining cattle. It’s another thing that takes up space, so once again the Outback scores major brownie points. There’s plenty of medicines and new drugs, too.

How has life changed over the years for you being a recognised face? To be honest, it’s not too bad. I’m busier than ever – just this morning I had two visitors – from Scotland and also the Midlands – who wanted a selfie with me! It’s fun but I make sure nothing gets in the way of my mixed vet work. I get stopped quite a bit too, not only for my autograph, but often by someone who wants to discuss their dog’s lame leg or other minor health problems. Not that I’m complaining – I love meeting owners as well as their animals. It’s a busy but exciting period of my life and one I never expected.

So comparing the Outback to your old Impreza, do you miss it? A little. I do miss the madness of it. But the Outback is so good for carting things around, not just work bits and bobs, but fun stuff like the family’s mountain bikes, etc. And it’s incredibly safe too, with warning bleeps telling me if I’m veering off lane or there’s danger ahead. Stray sheep in the middle of road, for example!

Has your vet’s work changed much? No, not that much – cows still need to be calved and horses hooves still need to be looked after. The equipment has advanced over recent years. For

And just like that, Julian’s off again. Ten years from now? Maybe he’ll still be driving his much-loved Outback. Find out more about the Outback at subaru.co.uk/outback

IN THE NEWS

ALL-ROUND SAFETY, ALL Subaru Corporation recently announced Subaru’s vision to eliminate traffic accident deaths involving Subaru vehicles by 2030. Ensuring our vehicles are Better Where It Matters – designing and building cars that are as safe as possible – is something we’re rightly proud of. In the 1960s, well before crash testing was mandatory, Subaru was undertaking pioneering collision tests. Today we continue to pick up accolades and high ratings in collision safety tests globally, but we believe that it’s on the road where safety performance really matters. Safety technology has never been so intelligent, powerful and advanced. Subaru continues to pioneer active, passive and pre-crash safety systems to give drivers and passengers supreme confidence and peace of mind on the road. It’s an all-round safety principle that we passionately adhere to. A whistle-top tour of major Subaru markets quickly reveals the extent of the many safety accolades. In the US, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) has awarded the Subaru marque with seven IIHS TOP SAFETY PICKS + for the 2019 Ascent (not available in Europe), Outback, Legacy, Crosstrek (known as XV in the UK) and Impreza. IIHS tests evaluate two aspects of safety: ’crashworthiness’– how well a vehicle protects its occupants in a crash – and ’crash avoidance and mitigation’– technology that can prevent a crash or

28

lessen its severity. TOP SAFETY PICKS are given to vehicles that earn good ratings in the IIHS’s crashworthiness tests. The Plus ‘+’ recognition is added for winners with a superior front crash prevention rating and good headlights. The latest US spec Forester was awarded the 2019 TOP SAFETY PICK with the highest possible rating of Good for six crashworthiness tests and Superior for front crash prevention. In Japan, Subaru has performed equally well. In 2018, the latest Japanese spec Forester won the top rating in the JNCAP Preventative Safety Assessment whilst in 2019, the XV and Impreza won the Grand Prix in the JNCAP Collision Safety Performance Assessment award with the highest score ever. An amazing achievement underlining the ability to unite driver, passenger and pedestrian protection measures. In Australia and New Zealand, Subaru have scored top safety ratings for the range in the ANCAP Car Safety Assessment Programme carried out by the Australian Automobile Association (AAA), with all models scoring a 5-star rating. In the UK and across Europe, Subaru also leads the way in setting safety standards. Euro NCAP is an independent automobile collision safety test programme carried out in Europe. It evaluates adult and child occupant protection, pedestrian protection, safety assist and how well vehicles automatically detect and prevent collisions across all derivatives of each model. All Subaru SUVs, plus Impreza and Levorg, currently hold the maximum 5-star Euro

L AROUND THE WORLD NCAP safety rating. Earlier this year, Subaru triumphed over 29 other manufacturers to be voted the Best Manufacturer for Safety Features in the UK’s 2019 Driver Power Survey - the UK’s largest car satisfaction survey. Enhancing all around safety Subaru vehicles are fitted with a host of safety technologies that support safe driving, not only in the event of an accident but from the moment the driver sits behind the wheel – giving you the control and confidence to enjoy driving, whatever the weather or road conditions. Passive safety technologies ensure that Subaru’s are designed to give the driver and passengers the best possible protection if an accident or impact is unavoidable. The way we design and build our cars is a major factor behind Subaru’s highly acclaimed and top-rated safety performance. The cabin-protecting layout ensures any impact is absorbed and the engine and gearbox drop safely below the passenger compartment, protecting occupant’s legs. The ring-shaped reinforcement frame is efficient in absorbing energy from impacts in all directions and creates a safe area within the cabin, whilst SRS airbags and whiplash-reducing front seats all provide outstanding protection. Last year, we introduced the new Subaru Global Platform (SGP). This platform underpins current XV and Impreza models and will also underpin the e-BOXER range launching later this year. This manufacturing blueprint also improves energy dispersal in the event of a collision by directing more energy safely beneath the seating compartment and offers greater body strength, improved body rigidity and handling and better ride quality.

Primary safety technologies consider safety from the initial stages of the vehicle’s design as early detection of danger can help avoid accidents. Subaru has maintained a consistent focus on minimising blind spots, optimising the driving position and utilising an intuitive interface to reduce distractions. Subaru’s active safety technologies refine the basic functions of the car – driving, turning and stopping – to deliver exceptional stability and predictable control. Putting control back into the hands of the driver are features such as Subaru’s unique combination of Boxer engine and permanent Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive, as well as other technologies such as Vehicle Dynamics Control and Electric Brake-force Distribution. Preventative safety features are designed to help eliminate accidents and underpin Subaru’s vision to eliminate traffic accident deaths involving our vehicles by 2030. A range of preventative safety technologies – such as EyeSight driver assist, Rear Vehicle Detection, Steering Responsive Headlights and High Beam Assist – are fitted across the Subaru SUV range as standard. EyeSight has been proven to offer excellent accident-prevention performance: a Europe-wide survey of Subaru owners in 2018 found that EyeSight had prevented an accident for over 30% of respondents. Better where it matters is our mantra – and never more so than when it comes to improving safety on our roads. Find out more at subaru.co.uk/safety

FROM OUTBACK COUNTRY… TO COUNTRY LIFE IN THE OUTBACK

The Outback is one of the most versatile cars around and goes just about anywhere. We love it. But would you love it enough to ship it 10,000 miles from Down Under to leafy Cheshire? Brian Nolan did.

Brian’s Subaru in the Australian Outback

Australia is vast. From endless arid plains to high country plateaus bathed in autumnal hues, red sandstone mountain ranges to tropical rainforests, home to an incredible array of plants and animals. It was also home for many years to Liverpool-born Brian Nolan and his family. Living on the edge of the Southern Highlands in New South Wales, Brian had travelled around much of the country. In 2015, Brian bought his first Subaru, an Outback 2.5i SE, and since then has driven thousands of hard kilometres through New South Wales, Queensland, the Victoria and South Australian wine regions and the dry desert landscapes of central Australia. “Tough as old boots” is how Brian describes it, “and the most versatile vehicle I have ever owned.” 30

Across Australia, it had to be. Not just supremely comfortable on the arm-achingly long distances, but a go-anywhere spirit across so many different terrains and diverse landscapes. And it can be oven-hot, upwards of 48°C, which the Outback handled with ‘no sweat’.

that came as standard that convinced Brian to seal the deal.

Effortlessly capable So what made Brian choose an Outback in the first place? “I was looking for a super safe SUV and had test-driven a few before giving Subaru a whirl. Straightaway, I felt right at home in it. It’s built for outdoor life and has top-notch towing ability. In Oz, everyone is pulling a boat or a caravan and the Outback took up the strain with very little effort. The safety features are admirable, too, and the space..well…it swallowed up four large suitcases.”

Subaru enjoys stellar success in Australia, and the Outback is the number-two best selling large SUV. The Forester is also catching on quick as Brian anecdotally recalls, “one of our neighbours was so impressed with our Outback, they bought a Forester!”

Interestingly, it was some of the extras

“Leather seats, sun-roof – these are details that can bump up the cost considerably in other makes. Not Subaru; I got these as part of the package.”

Fast forward to last year and the big move back to England. Wilmslow, in Cheshire, to be precise. No worries “For family reasons, we decided to

return back to England. It was a bit of a wrench after 35 years, but we all wanted to come home. And there are worse places to live than the beautiful countryside surrounding Cheshire!” But it was the decision to ship his Outback home too that raised a few eyebrows. “Basically, I just didn’t want to part with it. I could have sold it like that, but why? It was so reliable and capable over there, I didn’t want to drive anything else over here. Plus I knew how easily it could cope with the freezing conditions we were coming back to. Far more adaptable than me, to be honest.”

the inspection and MOT. No further mods were needed.” After arriving back in the UK, the Outback was due its three-year service, which was undertaken by Brian’s local Subaru dealership who thought it was in outstanding condition considering all the desert sand it had driven through.

Fortunately, he’s still got just the car to do it. He’s already taken the Outback on a mile-munching tour of the Lake District and will be hitting the high roads of Scotland later this year, followed by a drive and a half to sun-drenched Spain. Which, for a car as good and as versatile as his ex-Aussie Outback, will present ’no worries mate’.

Settling well into his new life, Brian has still got that go-anywhere adventurous spirit in his blood.

Brian looked carefully into the logistics and cost of shipping, and felt it was worth every penny. Arriving by boat on the East Coast a few weeks later (after sailing through the Suez Canal), it was transported to the Midlands, where he picked it up. “It was like greeting a long lost pal. An agent had arranged for the speedometer to be changed from kilometres to miles, and all other approvals needed relating to personal imports. It sailed through

SIX SUBARU STARS

6. Leone Estate This little gem is a rarely seen and is a little-known star in Subaru’s rich bloodline. A compact, reliable and versatile commercial vehicle that used AWD in a family car wrapper, the Leone Estate laid down the blueprint for many of its descendants to follow. Small yet spacious, rugged yet light and fleet of foot, it was a huge hit with farmers, countrylifers and, of course, anybody that wanted to get to work during those Baltic 1970’s winters! Creating an army of loyal owners that would stay with the brand for decades, this really was a significant little Subaru.

Always pushing the boundaries of what’s possible, Subaru is well known for creating cars that aren’t afraid to bring something new into the mix. Devoted Subaru fan Paul Cowland picks his six favourite Subarus from over the years… Being one of Japan’s more niche manufacturers, Subaru has enjoyed the enviable position of being able to follow its design and engineering heart. Over the years this has led to some simply wonderful machines: vehicles that either redefine their market sector, or create something new and different altogether. Whether it’s driver enjoyment, amazing grip or incredible dynamics, here are my favourite six stars of the Subaru family.

32

5. Forester Until this shapely carry-all came along in 1997, SUVs had always been practical and spacious, but somewhat lacking power and excitement and bereft of driver enjoyment. Ever one to think outside of the box, Subaru’s talented R&D team decided to simply drop a perfectly proportioned lifestyle body over their rally-proven Impreza chassis. The result? A car that had fabulous ground clearance and genuine mud-plugging credentials, but with the kind of underpinnings that made it a genuine delight to drive on road as well. Often imitated by some brands, but never quite equalled, the Forester remains legendary to this day.

SUBARU MAGAZINE

4. Outback Look out of your window on your next commute and I guarantee that you’ll spot a jacked-up, go-anywhere estate car. The granddaddy of them all, of course, is the Subaru Outback, a car that first burst onto the world stage in 1994. Boasting the good looks and cabin luxury of a Legacy estate, combined with tough bodyside mouldings, Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive and enhanced ground clearance, the Outback could literally go anywhere – and fit in anywhere. A truly classy and timeless car, it’s still an industry benchmark.

3. BRZ This was a shock to many of us Subaru fans. The brand known for the world’s best handling AWD cars snuck up on us all with a rear wheel drive sports car! In typical Subaru fashion though, it was fabulously practical, wonderful to drive and able to go toe-to-toe with much more expensive rivals. Built to be a wonderfully analogue car in an increasingly digital age, the BRZ quickly became the darling of the automotive press, reminding them all just how wonderful a perfectly balanced front engine, Rear Wheel Drive car can be. In fact, I liked this car so much when I drove it, I went out and bought one.

2. Legacy While many remember its younger, more iconic brother, the Impreza, we can’t have this list without tipping our collective hats to the car that spawned that masterpiece: the Legacy. This car, perhaps more than any other, cemented Subaru’s place in the UK’s collective minds as a source of fast, understated and ridiculously grippy saloon cars that you could drive to work in – or attack your local ‘B’ road with equal aplomb. Factor in the car’s dominance in the World Rally Championship – and its glorious association with a certain Mr McRae – and you’ll understand just why this car was so pivotal in its time.

1. MV Pick-Up Proof, if it were needed, that Subaru always likes to offer the market something new, the MV pick-up offered farming, construction and forestry professionals the tenacious AllWheel Drive grip and pick-up body that their jobs had always demanded, only in a much lighter, more handsome and – let’s face it – entertaining package. The MV scored an instant hit in the showrooms, delivering bales of hay, bags of cement and even livestock all over the UK, before some bright spark decided it would also sell well as a ‘lifestyle’ pick up, with a few bull bars and spot lights. Many of these incredibly hardworking machines are still in active duty today, giving the same uncomplicated, reliable service they always did. Their now ‘classic’ status has led to soaring prices for nice examples. Picking an overall winner from Subaru’s enviable family tree is never easy – there are simply too many gems throughout the years to choose from – with each one adding something new or interesting into the mix. I just can’t wait to see what the next six amazing Subarus of the future might be… 33

SUMMER LOVIN’: HOW TO KEEP YOUR ROADTRIP COOL IN THE SUN, WIND AND RAIN

Travelling by car in the summer can be one of the greatest driving pleasures of all when the weather is right, but failing to prepare properly can cause temperatures to rise! Our quick guide to keeping your cool in your Subaru during the summer months should lead to many happy miles in the sunshine…

Tackling the basics Built to handle Middle Eastern heat, your Subaru has everything needed to shrug off even a mercury-boiling day – but even the best needs to be kept in fine fettle. Simple checks on essentials like the coolant levels (to prevent overheating), or the washer fluid level (to clear dust and flies from the screen) become all the more important. To transform your Subaru into a cool, cossetting mobile ice-box for those days when we do get sun, make sure the air conditioning system is in tip-top condition, with the gas fully recharged. The engine may often be under extra load, so check all drive belts. Last but not least, ensuring that both air and cabin filters are flowing freely will let the engine work at optimum capacity. You can keep the windows shut, and any dust, pollen or bugs outside of the cabin. Naturally, your local Subaru dealer will be only too happy to perform a Summer Health Check on your car. Best of all, you can relax with a cool drink while they do all the hard work!

Kit out your car

Cabin service With your Subaru prepped to perfection, you’ll want to think about you and your passengers, particularly if younger or older members of the family are on board. Keeping everyone relaxed, hydrated, cool and occupied means that the miles will soon fly by. Plenty of water and cold drinks will give you that ‘business class’ experience, while a selection of chargers, games and snacks will take care of everything else when the weather takes a turn for the worse. To enjoy fresh music and podcasts on the trip, make use of your Subaru infotainment system by connecting your phone via Apple CarPlay™ or Android Auto™*. If you’re more of a CD-friendly audiophile, ensure you’ve stashed your playlist in the glovebox. Either that, or get your whistling on point before the next big journey…

Although your Subaru truly is an all-weather carry-all, it can still benefit from a few choice upgrades. This season our in-car coat hanger, cargo management box and roof boxes are especially popular. The in-car coat hanger ensures that your clothes remain wrinkle free, even when it’s sweltering outside or they need to dry off. Whether it’s business or social, nobody wants to arrive in sweaty, wet or crumpled apparel. With this handy addition, you’ll always score maximum presentation points - whether you’re trying to impress your client, your hot date, or just your Nan. The cargo-management box is a simple-buteffective device creating instant volume for storage. When not in use, it folds neatly out of the way. Whether it’s your holiday groceries, the beach sports kit or just Friday night’s takeaway, there aren’t many items it can’t make easier, safer and tidier to carry. A true summer travel essential, in other words. You may own a large, family-friendly SUV, but prams, bikes, boogie boards and the dog’s bed can quickly fill your boot, leaving little room for important things, such as clothes. A roof box can solve the problem should you need extra space for your summer expedition necessities. No matter which Subaru model you have, where you’re going, or who you’re taking, pop in to your local Subaru dealer before your next roadtrip and they’ll make sure it’s first class all the way. BETTER-BUILT DESERVES BETTER-MAINTAINED Subaru vehicles are engineered to perform: not just daily, but year after year. In fact, 96% of Subaru vehicles over a decade old are still on the road. Since we build every Subaru for the long haul, quality maintenance matters. Choosing Subaru servicing and original parts guarantees total peace of mind. Keeping your Subaru safe, capable and reliable means fully understanding how each vehicle is designed to operate. Subaru’s advanced safety technologies, for instance, are installed to save lives. Systems like these must be correctly inspected and checked during a service to ensure they remain in full working order. When it comes to quickly spotting and preventing potential issues, noone knows your Subaru better than our manufacturer-trained Service Technicians. Providing specialist knowledge, advanced Subaru diagnostic equipment and original parts, there’s no substitute for visiting a Subaru-approved service centre. Quick Health Checks All Subaru-approved garages offer owners a health check at no charge – all you have to do is arrange a time to drop off your car at your local dealership. If any issues are noted, they will be explained, along with any advice or recommendations. If work is advised, you will receive a clear estimate, and can decide if and when the repairs should be carried out. Is the software up to date? Like most modern vehicles, Subaru models rely on software to control many technical functions. Vehicle software is periodically updated by manufacturers to reflect improvements, fixes or changes. Any service at an approved Subaru garage will ensure the current version is automatically checked and, if necessary, any updates applied. Ensuring you have the latest software is important: new releases can include important safety system or driver assist improvements, enhancements to entertainment and navigation features, improved fuel efficiency, performance and more. 36

Original manufacturer or approved parts? At some point, any vehicle will need parts replaced due to failure or wear. Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) like Subaru provide the same components that were fitted when your car was built at the factory. Extensively tested, these high quality parts are engineered specifically for each model. All Subaru-approved garages use OEM Subaru parts, which means should your vehicle need any parts it will be restored to the as-new condition after repair. All Subaru OEM parts are guaranteed for a minimum of 3 years / 60,000 miles under the Subaru parts and labour warranty. Alternatively, for Subaru vehicles over three years old, owners can select from a range of Subaru-approved parts. Covering items commonly replaced due to routine wear, these rigorously-checked third-party components offer the option to reduce parts costs for older vehicles whilst maintaining complete peace of mind.

Maintaining manufacturer specifications As vehicles become increasingly sophisticated, only manufacturerspecific diagnostic equipment and specialist training can ensure owners enjoy the high standards of maintenance and repair required. Subaru vehicle warranties, for example, require evidence that checks and servicing have been completed to manufacturer specifications – which is guaranteed when visiting an approved Subaru garage. It’s also worth noting that a comprehensive Subaru service history fundamentally impacts a vehicle’s resale value. Choosing to drive a Subaru is a conscious decision. It reflects your desire for safety, reliability and robust engineering performance. Don’t let your choice of vehicle maintenance compromise your enjoyment. An advisor will call promptly to manage the accident process, ensuring you are safe and to arrange collection of your vehicle for repair.

Your repair dashboard Once your vehicle is recovered, you’ll be able to see regular repair updates via the app’s Repair Hub and you can also download your repair guarantee. The repairer may also share updates, information and even pictures of progress.

Accident reporting If you’re unfortunate enough to have a road traffic accident, you’ll want to gather as much information as possible whilst it is still fresh in your mind. You’ll also need to share your name and insurer details with any other parties involved. The Accident Report feature in the app helps you collate all the essential evidence at the scene with a step-by-step guide and checklist. The app offers advice on taking the correct photos for your insurer and your repairer, ensuring they are GPS and date-stamped, and storing them ready to be emailed or shared.

In addition to taking the pain out of accident management, the app also helps by offering handy reminders to renew vehicle insurance, road tax and arrange servicing. Even better, Mi.Subaru can be linked to multiple Subaru vehicles – ideal for companies or multi-car families.

ONFORM. ON A MISSION. Team OnForm is a young, dynamic cycle race squad that is making its mark in the cycling world. All amateur riders, the team provides an incredible opportunity for some of Britain’s most talented young cyclists to compete at national and world-class level. Subaru UK and Perkins Garages Subaru in Rayne (near Braintree, Essex) have supplied the team with an Outback as the primary support vehicle for the cyclists. The OnForm team is on a mission and Subaru will be with them every straight, every bend and every dizzying climb of the way. We chat to Andrew Paine, Director at Perkins Garages and Simon Howes, Team Principal of OnForm about their partnership, the remarkable success of the team, and the sporting passion that drives everyone to participate for free. Simon, an exceptional cycling pro in his time, explains how the two met. “We got to know each other through friends of friends on the cycling circuit. It was quickly clear that we shared the same beliefs, values and vision for the sport, as well as the desire to promote and develop young speed machines in this country. We both saw too much talent fall by the wayside and we wanted to change that. Oh, and we also clicked because both of us talk for England and noone else could hack an hour of our jabbering!” The two friends kept in touch and when Simon put together Team OnForm in 2017, he approached Andrew for much-needed help and support. A perfect partnership Andrew was a little hesitant at first. “Initially I wasn’t too sure how I could help, but as a structure started to emerge I began to realise that our two team’s philosophies lined up perfectly. Simon wanted to create a cycling environment where trust and reliability would be its DNA. Where no promises would be given that couldn’t be delivered. This was everything that we as a Subaru dealer stood for – and continue to.” Perkins Garages has been a Subaru dealer since 2013, specialising in both new and used car sales, aftersales, servicing and MOT work. Excellent service quality has

given them an outstanding reputation in the Essex region, something Andrew is particularly proud of. Simon’s dreams became a reality and the team started to conquer a few years later. The fledgling team were split into Junior Men and Women (aged 16 to 18), Senior Men and Women (over 18) and, then more recently, into Elite Women. Unlike more established teams, the riders are all amateurs, seeking a pathway into the higher levels of world tour cycling and championships. With little funding, the team defied the odds and started to do well. Then very well. Not only did they hold their own against the professional big hitters, but in events where they were allowed to compete together, they chased the pros all the way home. True to form, rising stars started to emerge and the team collected jerseys and laurels, gracing podium after podium. Supported by safety Andrew decided that this was the right time to help, as the team required more support as it went from strength to strength. Andrew enlisted the help of Subaru UK, who equipped Team OnForm with an Outback to use as the team’s primary support vehicle. Perkins Garages committed to looking after the vehicle for the duration of the 2019 race schedule, managing any maintenance required not only in the UK, but also across Europe. “It’s been an absolute blessing”, Simon remarks, “The Outback is the best car for the job without a doubt. With its

impeccable safety credentials and allwheel drive, it’s as reliable as a good friend that can handle any terrain. It’s stable as anything and has the space to carry absolutely everything we need.” Which is a lot. Up to six cycles on the roof rack, every bike part imaginable inside, an overworked mechanic, radio equipment as well as tub-loads of the stuff riders use to prevent chaffing! “You can’t underestimate how important comfort is, too. We spend hour after hour going up and down the country, so it needs to be an R&R ride.” Climbing to the top The results continue to amaze and young riders like 20-year-old Anna Henderson are going to be big stars in the not-so-distant future. Simon knows he has a precocious talent on his hands: “She’s come from nowhere. A British ski champion who decided one day to give cycling a go. She’s whirlwind fast, fearless and her results have been electrifying. So much so, she now competes on an equal footing with the elite WorldTour women riders.” It’s a remarkable climb to the top and, rather like Team OnForm itself, she’s on a mission. And with Andrew, Simon and the Outback behind her, ‘mission impossible’ is now only a few metres up the road. You can keep tabs on Team OnForm at  @cycleteamonform,  @teamonform

K T GREEN SUBARU DEALER OF THE YEAR 2018

Inside and out at K T Green

Simon Green is chuffed, and so he should be. His familyowned dealership K T Green near Leeds, was named Subaru Dealer of the Year 2018 back in January. “We had our own Green party after the award was announced”, Simon explains. “We took the family plus our whole team of 15 out for a day’s off-roading and rallying in an old Impreza.” We shouldn’t have expected anything else. For this is a family, a team, a dealership, that lives and breathes Subaru. As Simon succinctly puts it, “it’s in our blood.” Simon, Dealer Principal, runs the business along with his sister Sally and his parents, Chris and Sue. In fact, the dealership is a third-generation family owned business that was founded in 1952 by his grandfather, Kenneth Talbot Green, who sold used cars from a small showroom on the Otley Road, Shipley. “We moved to our present site about 40 years ago now and have been selling new and used Subarus since 1982.” Simon continues, “Actually, we do sell a few other handpicked, prestige models but it’s Subaru we love and it’s Subaru we’re really passionate about. We drive them, our team drives them, and there’s even a couple of classic models amongst our employee ranks, including a 1994 Subaru SVX.” The dealership itself is based in the scenic village of Pool-in-Wharfedale, some 10 miles north of Leeds and two miles east of Otley. It’s classic Subaru country, full 40

of twists, turns and steep hills that the Tour de Yorkshire serves up to its long-suffering riders. An army of loyal customers “It sounds like a real cliché, but our dealership is successful because our customers are treated like one of the family. We know most of them by name and they get outstanding customer service, countless years of product know-how and absolutely no arm-wrestling pressure from us to buy. We’re honest, transparent and fair.” This is a bit of an understatement from Simon. Their customers don’t just come back year after year, they champion the business, spreading the good word far and wide across Yorkshire. “I guess we have an army of supporters who do a great job of selling us. It must be the best recommend-a-Subaru scheme in the country! Our employees, too, are incredibly loyal to us. Matthew, in Sales, is celebrating 25 years with us and he’s the fourth employee who has stayed with K T for this length of time. Must be the Yorkshire tea and barm cakes we Greens make.” Their showroom is deceptively large, and includes an on-site workshop for all manner of aftersales services as well as a body shop that can deal with everything from tiny scratches to big accident damage repairs. All-round winners K T Green was rightly recognised for its outstanding performance in 2018, triumphing in areas including sales, servicing, parts and customer satisfaction.

The K T Green team celebrate!

Subaru UK Managing Director Chris Graham commented: “I was delighted to present Simon Green with the award for K T Green’s fantastic all-round performance in 2018. This award is based on customer service rating, sales performance and parts sales – and all the results showed us that K T Green really are better where it matters.” But, apart from the Green team smashing targets, we wanted to know from Simon what he thought gave his dealership the edge last year. “I think we’re strong in all areas, but it’s customer satisfaction every time for me. We have a formidable team that bleeds Subaru and our customers know this and know they’ll be looked after brilliantly.” And, as he said at the awards ceremony, “this is a reward for everyone in the business that supports us.” Apart from the rallying day out, the dealership will be celebrating their win with a couple of special events throughout the year. You’ll also find them proudly displaying this prestigious award on their website and in their showroom. But, with typical modesty, Simon likes to keep things quiet and low key. Unlike their customers, who will probably be shouting about it from the rooftops.
