Styling is a reflection of our personality – our tastes, our power of observation, our own cultural upbringing and our talent for originality. Creativity is a fundamental human compulsion to invent or to compose. Take time each week to create your own ideas, however humble you may think they are. Look closely at the details in everything and notice the colours, the shapes and the deep inner feelings you have when you are attracted to something. Creative expression comes from the many objects we have around us in our lives, a bowl of flowers, a favourite teapot on a lovely table, a painting or a garden on a misty day. Creativity is inspired by the wonders of our universe. I believe we are here on this planet to create, to create ideas, create a family, to create a world full of peace and to live in a world of creativity. As babies we respond visually and creatively before we lear n to talk. We are all naturally creative, but sometimes we just forget how to be creative. There is a brilliant blue light, the size of a tiny seed in the centre of our brain, the seed of consciousness where our soul lives and it is known as the Blue Pearl... the rarest of all pearls. It is a metaphor for purity of thought, intuition and divine insight. It is through quietness and meditation that we find our connection to our higher self and here we are able to access the inner world. As I always say on every front cover ‘capturing the beauty within’ When we connect to the blue pearl creativity becomes our world. You cannot touch a blue sky, but you can see it. You cannot touch the blue pearl but you will feel it and it will open your mind to creativity and you will see and experience many wonderful things You will see a lot of blue in this issue, when you do, think of the blue pearl. Styling magazine is excited to share the brilliant work of artist and self taught still life photographer Laziz Hamani. He points us to the beauty in everything ... you will know and recognize his still life masterpieces. He works one on one with the best of the best. His books The Grand Bazaar, Istanbul and Antiquaries published by Assouline are brimming with gorgeous imagery. His photography is beautiful, clever, sharp and always exciting. There is no limit to his imagination and we look forward to seeing his future creations. Styling magazine honors the work of Laziz Hamani, we have picked our favorites to share with you on the following pages and throughout this issue.

Drew Lindsay combines classical French furniture with comfort, style and love. The care taken in the design and decorating of his home along with an intimate understanding of the surroundings brings a certain honesty to his environment. Drew’s approach to his life right now is to be comfortable and relaxed. His home ‘Hawthorne’ in the Southern Highlands of NSW sits quietly and peacefully behind a high hedge, surrounded by mature trees that drip with exotic pine cones and flowers. Is it the garden or is it the house? both work well together. Drew has renovated and opened up this house over the last ten years bringing in much more light. My plan was to bring the outdoor and indoor living together, I built a conservatory at the very front of the house and this means we can be right in the garden on a cold winters day. I have widened all the doorways in this house and opened the spaces, I hate corridors, says Drew. Through spring and summer, I can open up the house from the front entrance through to the dining room onto the back enclosed courtyard and our entertaining area doubles in size. Reflection is very important to me, both in light and in quietness. I love to sit quietly in the rooms and I can hear the sound of the three water fountains echoing through the house on a beautiful day when the doors are open, says Drew.

It is Drew’s distinctive interior design style mixed with a forty year collection of fine European furniture and objects that gives this home a beautiful energy. When I first walked in I felt peaceful, is it the flow of the air that moves through the house or the energy that comes from the much loved sacred objects that welcome you as you arrive. A tall 17th century hand carved fruitwood statue of the Virgin Mary stands on the entrance table. Feel her head and her face, feel how soft she is, said Drew, we think thousands of people have touched her over the centuries. She obviously was much loved and she still holds the loving energy now.

‘Hawthorne’ was originally my mother’s home, it has been a family home and a place for my children and my grandchildren to visit, with five bedrooms and five bathrooms it’s has been a perfect sized home as everyone has their own space. Home and family are what are most important to me. I have been coming to the Southern Highlands since I was a young boy staying with relatives who ran farms in Highlands and I have lived and worked here now permanently for twenty years and have now decided to move to a smaller home. “I love this house, but it is far too big for me now, I will miss it, but I hope to find something just right, I will know when I find it” smiles Drew. The romantically adorned main living room which opens both onto the front garden and to a side enclosed courtyard has a lovely white to grey hazy light. Our Sydney apartment is decorated almost exactly the same, same interior, same style! I love the colour white, this front room is mostly white, with oyster coloured curtains that almost turn white in the light. This room is home to many special pieces that I love, says Drew, as he points to objects and introduces them to me as if they were his children.

I first started collecting when I was 18 years old and I haven’t stopped. I love the European style, partially French. “my taste has never changed”. My home used to be over propped and highly decorated, but I now have a rule that if something new comes in … something must go out, although my partner thinks I should let two things go, he laughs. A large French canvas theatre backdrop hangs on one wall of the living room, which I found at Graham Geddes in Melbourne. Little monkeys and a very proud rooster are painted onto a soft stone coloured background. The tapestry cushions in this room were made from an early handmade French Aubusson rug that was completely ruined and in tatters. I found a wonderful woman in Sydney that carefully cut out the luxuriant hand embroidered scrolls and bouquets of flowers into little cushions squares and finished each one off with French trimmings. I managed to get fourteen cushions from the one rug, says Drew, they have added such a wonderful colour and element to the room.

The 18th century pair of carved mirrors that stand over the fire place were found on a trip to Versailles in the 1980’s. I brought a few beautiful things back to Australia then, I wished I had brought more.

The marble Marie Antoinette bust sits atop an iron Napolean III pedestal, which are incredibly heavy and it takes five people just to move them. I have had Marie Antoinette for a very long time, but the Francis of Assisi bust is only new, my friend and antique collector Lydie du Bray found him for me. I originally had a smaller bust of the Pope sitting on the other pedastal that I felt never really worked well proportionally.

Hawthorne is a very relaxed home with a feeling of being somewhere in the countryside of Europe. In the next issue of Styling magazine we will share Part 2 of Drew Lindsay’s home, featuring the open courtyards and garden and the dining room set for a very elegant dinner party for good friends.

Suzie’s Style

Decorator, stylist, event specialist and mother of three, Suzie Anderson, is living the life that most of us only dream of. Suzie recently moved from her historic home ‘Hopewood’ after many years sharing it on weekends for weddings. Also opening the gates to the public several times a year. She shares with Styling magazine her new home, her memories of ‘Hopewood’ and her love of travelling between Australia and Paris.

I started decorating when I was first married (or does an obsessive desire to restyle my bedroom at age ten count?) as I and my (then) husband bought and sold houses to renovate and sell on as the family grew in size.   Initially, a limited budget meant transforming rooms with paint and soft furnishings. The purchase of a fabulous old mountain weekender meant lots of trips to auction houses and garage sales to furnish it  and that became a passion that turned into a career for me. My first retail venture was a stall at the Sydney Antique Centre and then a terrace house in Paddington, Sydney.   A love of French furniture and fabrics and rustic style lead to many buying trips to France and filling containers with flea market finds to stock my shop and house. When in France, I tend to spend most of my time in Paris and the South of France.  I also enjoy Belgium, as the style is tonal, simple and a little more masculine, which balances the French style.   So much about France inspires me.   My children used to comment that I look so happy and at home when I am in Paris!  I think it is that at every turn my senses are stimulated. The display of fruit at the local markets, the language, the music, the conversations in the cafes and bistros, the architecture, the romance!  

When I travel I manage a balancing act of the best 3 star accommodation I can find (as I'm out all day and don't really get to enjoy the hotel as I should) and then I inject a night or two of hotels with incredible style. I get a lot of my decorating inspiration from places I've stayed.  I have endless photos of wallpapers, bathrooms, carpets, stair rails etc.  Some places I love are:  La Mirande in Avignon, Hotel Jardin le secret in Nimes, L'hotel Particulier in Arles and the list goes on! I also get inspiration from country houses in England and Belgium where they use textiles and decorative antiques so well.  I source from other dealers, flea markets, op shops and second hand stores.  I am finding it harder to come across truly special items within our mass market culture, so when I do it's like "aaaaahhhh". When I do find something beautiful, unique, weathered by time, loved by previous generations and original, it truly touches my soul.  It's my truest aesthetic, so it gives me a natural high.   Generally my eye is caught by original finishes, pale, timeworn and casual.  I love pieces that tell a story.  I love to travel ... I live to travel.  I love being stimulated by a new culture, scents, music, food, people and when there, sourcing pieces that I can bring home to help me relive my adventures and share with  my customers.

The colour palette that I like to decorate with is most often neutrals with contrast of charcoal, sage green or that beautiful French Blue. The colour blue would come through in a stripe on an oatmeal hopsack, a toile du jouy quilt in French blue and white, the blue of summer hydrangeas or a blue hand-blown water glass.  A paler blue that I adore is that French grey blue of faded French shutters or a zinc finial.  

My shop in Paddington was like a little home. It was a tiny space with a lovely courtyard in the rear and to enter the terrace customers had to walk down a cobbled enclosed alleyway, through a French antique door and into 'my home'.   The shop was set up as you would find a house ... kitchen, living, bedroom, sunroom etc and customers would wander through and find furniture, linen, home wares 'in situ'.  This enabled them to see items as they could be used in their own homes.  I opened three days a week so I could manage being a Mum to my three children, Em (19) Jamie, (16) and Will (13) as well as source stock and restyle the shop so it felt new and fresh the next time my customers would visit.  I loved that space, the customers, the village atmosphere and the girls that I had working with me.   The only limitation was the size and the difficulty for moving furniture in

and around. When we moved to Hopewood in Bowral, space was no longer the issue, and deliveries were a dream.   My container could be plonked right in front of the showroom and stock could be unpacked at leisure. Hopewood is a rambling country estate with a 1884 main Dutch colonial style home and the old stables, now the Pavilion building, which was previously home to eighty plus babies and children. Hopewood Children Home, was a unique home operated by Leslie Owen Bailey in the 1940s who gathered babies from unmarried mothers and raised them to adulthood using principles of natural health.   At Hopewood, I was in my element as the building was the perfect setting to create a elegant wedding space to compliment the 11 acres of manicured gardens, and the disused menagerie of rooms at the back of the building, this became the new home to French & Country.   I spent a year renovating, concreting floors, installing old French windows and doors, paneling walls and of course, painting.  I was in heaven!   The renovation allowed me to meet many skilled tradespeople in the area and the wedding and home wares business introduced me to the most wonderful group of suppliers, staff and customers.   I was so happy that many of my customers from Paddington stayed loyal and would make the trip to Bowral for my open days.

When I first saw Hopewood it was in a little ad in the real estate pages of the local press. We thought it was absolutely beautiful but thought it must have been on a busy road or bad location given the budget marketing.   Months later when we were looking at the possibility of a little weekender in the Highlands we came across the property again and made a time to view.  From the moment we entered the sweeping drive and into the grand portico of the house, we were enchanted. The verandahs that surrounded Hopewood were like rooms in themselves!  We were overwhelmed by the sheer proportions, the main staircase, the butlers pantry, the billiard room and adjoining sunroom with the most beautiful stained glass windows. Within moments we knew Hopewood would be our new home.   We soon packed up our three children, enrolled them into new schools, put our little Victorian cottage by the beach on the market and moved to the country full time.   What a whirlwind! After 12 months of renovating we started to hold wedding ceremonies on the weekends in our garden, which helped with the maintenance costs.  After another 12 months we had renovated the old stables and engaged caterers and started holding receptions and events.   I loved decorating the spaces for weddings, opting for white, crystal chandeliers, vintage accessories with a French feel.   We held just one wedding a week so it really allowed us to get to know our brides & grooms and their families extremely well.

Often the planning would start twelve months in advance, so by the time the wedding day would come around, I would be almost as excited as them as if it was one of my children getting married! The thing that I didn't love so much was living and working at the same place. I never really felt like Hopewood was home. Each weekend from Friday through to Sunday there would be people on the property, suppliers on the other days. The driveway would have a constant stream of day trippers wanting to picnic in the gardens, despite the "By Appointment" sign at the front gate!   The door bell would often ring and at the door would be one of many people who had a history with the property keen to revisit their past.  As my husband was still working in the city the commute became extremely taxing for him. Although these were the negatives, the overall experience and the amazing  people we met because of our time there makes it genuinely worthwhile. Moving to the country has been a gift. Our children, particularly our two boys, thrived in the country. Their schooling was heaven for boys with acres to climb trees, camp amongst, ride billycarts and our neighbouring farmland places for them to wander off with their bows and arrows to 'hunt'!   For me personally, to have the opportunity to decorate an historic property like Hopewood was a dream come true. There were 6 bedrooms, 4 bathrooms, and a further two cottages all to be renovated and decorated.   The opportunity to create a fabulous wedding business and to have the space to create the new home for French & Country all culminated in making it a dream come true.  It's just the personal impact to our family life and working 7 days a week that was a negative during our time at Hopewood

Once the wedding business was in full swing, we had weddings every weekend except for certain key weekends where we chose to have our own private events, and during the cooler months of mid June to mid August. This also allowed time to do maintenance on the venue.   About 3 times a year I would have my French & Country Open Weekends where I would throw open the the doors and invite customers to the Pavilion where I would have set up my imported homewares in the series of rooms, open the gardens for the public to enjoy and the cafe would serve lunch and coffee.  There could be well over 1000 people each day on those events.  They were incredible ... such a brilliant atmosphere.  I had the most amazing bunch of people working with me to make that happen, and it was always a buzz to see my customers come back with friends and family to share the days.

Being a historic property with 11 acres of gardens so close to Sydney, we were often approached for television commercials, magazine advertisements and fashion shoots. We enjoyed working with the crew and always looked forward to seeing the finished result on air or in the magazines. It was also advantageous for my home wares business when they would use my props within their shoots!   Our most recent one involved the beautiful Delta Goodrem.  I was out for a large part of that day but was texted a few shots from a crew member telling of my 16 year old son sitting aside Delta playing the piano! Needless to say that was a huge hit on his Facebook page! _____________________________
