Coty Farquhar Photography & Styling

Dearest Readers, It seems like only yesterday that we launched Styling magazine and here we are with our nineteenth issue and at the end of our second year of publishing. It has been a very big year, very rewarding and at times overwhelming.  So much has happened in such a short amount of time.  My dream was to create a magazine that is beautiful for the senses in every way and I know that I have achieved that from all the special mail and comments that I receive from you. I had so many people writing to say that they cried whilst reading the last issue which was dedicated to my Mother. As we approach the time of the year when we all gather together in our own way to celebrate the many different things like Thanksgiving, Hanukkah, Christmas and the holidays, I decided to dedicate the entire issue to table settings. It’s our party issue, and it’s filled with styling ideas and settings from weddings, celebrations and special dinners. Last month I designed and decorated a table for 300 people which ran down the main street of our town in Bowral. The largest table setting event that I created was for two debutante balls for 450 people . With the help of many hands, anything can be achieved. I want to share something with you that’s close to my heart. I am obsessed with tableware and china and all things that glisten when polished. I melt when I see a gorgeous piece of silver or a teapot and I can’t stop collecting decanters and glassware.  My home is filled with lovely accoutrement and I know my husband finds it difficult to find a table with space to put his glass down.   Here within the 200 pages of this issue are my favourite styled table settings. Some that I photographed just last month in my spring garden and many

that you will definitely recognize from previous issues…now all together in one big issue. I love everything to do with the table. I love the table, the chairs, the linen, the porcelain, the glassware, the flatware and the food.  I adore the decorative items that grace the center of a table. I love all the things that you can do with a table setting, I love the flowers, and the arranging of them. I especially love the fact that it is the one place where my f a m i ly a n d f r i e n d s g at h e r together. It is a place where beautiful energy is shared.  Decorating tables is my job!  I am so lucky as I have enjoyed this for such a long time.  With Vogue Entertaining Guide magazine in Sydney my role was to create entertaining ideas and I often had to decorate the Vogue boardroom table. I would have napkins especially made; flower arrangements were always to be both artistic and unique as the senior editors hosted lunches for important guests.   This issue is not just about the dining table, it also about the side tables, the hall tables, the kitchen table and the garden table. My tables are always filled with things; it is where I put everything. In my home a surface area is not free for long. Clear it and an hour later there is something or someone using it. The next time we meet will be in 2015, I am so very excited about a new year ahead. We are moving the magazine into a new space next week and I will tell you more soon. Thank you for reading and sharing Styling magazine. I wish you all a wonderful festive season and may you spend many lovely, long days around your table with your family, friends and loved ones. Xx Coty Farquhar

Styling is a reflection of our personality – our tastes, our power of observation, our own cultural upbringing and our talent for originality. Creativity is a fundamental human compulsion to invent or to compose. Take time each week to create your own ideas, however humble you may think they are. Look closely at the details in everything and notice the colours, the shapes and the deep inner feelings you have when you are attracted to something. Creative expression comes from the many objects we have around us in our lives, a bowl of flowers, a favourite teapot on a lovely table, a painting or a garden on a misty day. Creativity is inspired by the wonders of our universe. When you are in the right state of heart and soul, just like magic you can tap into the endless flow of universal creative energy and resources and inspiration comes straight to you. - Coty Farquhar
