Crafted for Forever: The Sentiment and Sparkle of Jewellery

Looking back on life, there are memories that stand so clear that whether they happened decades ago or just yesterday, each detail is a vivid image. Our memories are laced with meaning and tied to specific senses. The scent of the salt air at the beach, where you and a loved one strolled carelessly. The taste of the perfect pour, in celebration of a milestone. The feeling of your grandmother’s knit cardigan, pressed against your skin in a warm embrace. These sensory moments transport us back to the chapters of our lives, anchoring each memory to a vivid feeling that lingers in the mind. Our most treasured moments are often forever preserved in physical keepsakes – a photograph, a piece of clothing or a piece of timeless jewellery. For us, jewellery holds the story of where we’ve been and who we love. Each ring, necklace and bracelet is a tangible link to the moments that define us.

Across four generations, Laings tell a story of family, heritage and connection

For centuries, jewellery has been passed through generations as symbols of love, meaning and style. Some of the earliest records of man showcase jewellery expression in one form or another. Ancient civilizations adorned themselves with feathers, shells, and vibrant stones—not just as functional charms for protection, but as an early expression of

humanity’s innate desire for beauty and self-expression. The discovery of diamonds and gemstones followed, each a piece of geological wonder that mesmerised with their radiance as well as their ability to endure. Elegant creations would eventually find their way into the jewellery boxes of our ancestors, ready to become heirlooms that would be cherished forevermore.

Today, your jewellery box is not only a collection of pieces but also a storybook of moments. Each design reflects expert craftsmanship, making fine jewellery a gift that endures through time. For many, it has become a tradition to mark life’s most significant milestones with a piece of jewellery or even a

luxury timepiece. From wedding anniversaries and graduations to personal triumphs, these treasures are not just adornments—they are tangible reminders of the chapters that shape our lives, ready to be passed down and celebrated for generations to come.

For over 185 years, luxury jeweller Laings have understood the emotional role that jewellery and watches play in our lives. With the start of a new year, they invite us to reflect on the connections that mean the most. From family traditions to treasured friendships, Generations of Love is their ode to the milestones that are captured in our most beloved keepsakes.

Across four generations, Laings tell a story of family, heritage and connection, revealing the beauty of fine jewellery and the bonds that make it truly meaningful. With a range of metals and gemstones, each piece can emulate individual style and hold the essence of individual personalities that come together to make up a family.

Marketing Director, Sally Pearson shares:

“Generations of Love celebrates what family truly means at Laings. Now in our sixth generation, our family run business holds heritage at its heart as a key pillar of who we are. These images capture the love we share with one another and the enduring bonds that define Laings, passed down through generations.”

With pieces that transcend trends, each jewellery creation at Laings embodies timeless elegance. Classic diamond line necklaces radiate beauty and brilliance, each diamond carefully selected, telling a story that started millions of years ago. Eternity rings continue your love story, beautifully crafted in platinum, white, rose, and yellow gold, with each design symbolising the next chapter of your journey together. Gemstone jewellery becomes more than colour,

representing divine meaning, emotional depth, and stories that go beyond time. Worn with every smile, through every tear and in the silence of everyday moments—timeless jewellery is a reminder of love, captured in a single sparkle.

Mazda UK Sales Director, Laura Brailey receives OEM Leader Award at Motor Trader Women in Motor Industry Awards

It was a successful evening for Mazda at the inaugural Motor Trader Women in Motor Industry Awards, with MMUK Sales Director, Laura Brailey taking the OEM Leader Award and Carina Hall from Mazda Financial Services winning the Financial Services Rising Star Award.

Organised by leading industry title Motor Trader Magazine, this new inspiring awards event was created to spotlight female

talent in the motor industry and honour achievement, innovation and the leadership shaping the future of automotive. Winners were chosen across 40 categories by an independent panel of 28 industry judges.

Laura Brailey

The judges praised Laura for being a strong, people-centric sales director at Mazda UK, commenting: “pioneering

gender diversity across the dealer network and within her team. She is an inspiring female leader, mentoring others and actively working to ensure accessible career pathways in sales.”

Carina Hall

Also claiming an award was Carina Hall, from Mazda Financial Services who took the Financial Services Rising Star Award. Commenting on the awards, Mazda Motors UK,

acknowledged for her work with Mazda Financial Services.”

Pioneering

gender diversity across the dealer network and within her team

Managing Director, Jeremy Thomson, said: “It’s fantastic to see Laura’s leadership recognised at an industry level, especially because the qualities being celebrated are exactly those that make such a difference within Mazda every day. I congratulate and thank her for the example she sets and for the momentum she creates around the business, likewise it’s great to see Carina

After collecting her award last week at an inspiring awards evening held in London, Laura Brailey, said: “I’m immensely proud to have been given this award both personally and as recognition for Mazda. The support and encouragement I have had from my colleagues at Mazda has influenced me hugely and quite simply I owe this award to them. This inaugural event is truly inspiring, highlighting the celebration of many women across the motor industry who are driving positive change and helping create more opportunities for women in the automotive sector”.

"2026. The biggest year for Mazda in the UK since 1969?" says Mazda

Motors UK, Managing Director, Jeremy Thomson

For those that don’t know, after two years as an importer, 1969 saw Mazda officially launched in the UK market at the British Motor Show. I think this year is

just as significant.

This year represents a significant step forward for our brand and sees three models launched in a single calendar year. That’s never happened before.

On the one hand, we’ve got the refresh of an iconic UK model, the CX-5. Having sold over 100,000 units already, it’s going to play a critical role in our range for years to come, cementing our commitment to giving our customers choice over the cars they drive. It’s a model well received by local and new customers alike, and a favourite of our team here in the UK.

On the other, two fully electric launches. The Mazda6e and the Mazda CX-6e. These represent a new era of Mazda as we continue to evolve our brand into the electric era. Both models embody our belief that EVs must remain human centric, combining craftsmanship, driving pleasure, and comfort.

For the average UK customer, electrification is still dawning. These launches represent our broader approach to meeting customer demands over the next few years. Not one solution, but many, guided by what drivers need most.

The Style of the City Awards 2025 dazzled with glitz, glamour, and unforgettable moments as we celebrated Welsh excellence across our vibrant capital and beyond in our second spectacular award ceremony.

AWARDS

The Style of the City Awards returned for another spectacular night of celebration, community, and style. We welcomed over 300 guests to The Coal Exchange Hotel, on Saturday 13th December, to come together, and celebrate not only themselves, but the entire South Wales’ business community.

Each guest was greeted with a luxury goodie bag, filled with products, services and vouchers from a wider range of contributors. From international brands MAC and Jo Malone to small Welsh businesses like Rogue Welsh Cakes and Elevate Clinic. Alongside an evening of celebration, fundraising, and the Laings Hidden Gem Game (yes, one of our guests walked away with a stunning Laings pendant, valued at over £1,000!), live entertainment elevated the night to one of style and class, with The Voice’s Bethzienna, Spotlight Ballet Performers, and Shola Ama, performing throughout the night.

Guests were also given the opportunity to help Style of the City fundraise for charity partner, Voices from Care Cymru. Generous businesses, including Spectrum Collections, Ynys Aroma, Siop Dwt, and more, donated prizes, to raise funds for VFCC who advocate for young people in care both on a day-to-day and legislative level. With the help of our guests, we were able to raise over £1,000!

The night would not have been able to come together without the support from our guests, contributors, team, judging panel, and our incredible lineup of sponsors. We look forward to the Style of the City 2026 Awards!

Why Balance Matters More Than We Think

Style of the City Columnist, Emma Meese delves into why balance in all aspects of life, means more than we think, and how she finds hers.

Life is all about balance. The balance of time: work and rest. Money: income and outgoings. Food: nourishment and treats. It took me until midlife to realise how uneven my own scales had become across all aspects of my life.

For years, I gave more to others than I gave to myself. My comfort zone was showing up, staying late, helping out, being available. I offered my time and energy freely to colleagues, friends and family, yet didn’t show myself the same compassion or gratitude.

I believed this made me a better employee, a better friend, a better person. The narrative in my head was that I was stronger and more resourceful if I gave but didn’t take; that resilience came from pushing through, not pausing. This is often jovially referred to as ‘mum guilt’, when we feel bad for making time for ourselves.

Inevitably, that way of living catches up with you. Burnout and fatigue aren’t dramatic arrivals, they visit quietly.

After an unexpected divorce I questioned the value I’d put on my time, why I’d given it so freely to others before myself.

I learned the hard way that self care isn’t selfish, it’s essential. The saying ‘you can’t pour from an empty cup’ rang loudly in my ears.

Divorce didn’t break me, it introduced me to myself.

The woman I became afterwards was stronger, but also quieter. More intentional.

One of the simplest yet most powerful shifts I made was creating a list of fifty things to do before I turned 50. It sounds small, but it reset something in my brain. It gave me permission to prioritise fun, activities and time for myself over anything else.

If anyone asked “What are you doing this weekend?” my standard response would have been “I have plans but can cancel if you need me,”

COLUMN

With the list it became a definitive “I’m ticking something off my list” No questions. No amendments. No cancellations.

Slowly, the internal narrative changed. I finally realised this was something I needed.

After a year of rebalancing my time, I’ve turned my focus to my body. Working from home had left me static, skipping meals until mid-afternoon then unhealthy snacking the rest of the day. Middle-aged spread had crept in and shifting it felt harder than ever.

So I booked an appointment at the Elevate Clinic in Cardiff and embarked on a journey to a healthier body. Six months on I have dropped two dress sizes and make much healthier food choices. And, more importantly, feel reconnected to my body rather than at war with it.

Balance isn’t about perfection, it’s about noticing when the scales tip too far in one direction taking the time and effort to gently adjust them.

Early February marks end of the Year of the Snake, a time to shed what no longer fits. Old habits, outdated expectations, versions of ourselves that have been stretched too thin. From mid February the Year of the Horse brings a different energy altogether: forward-moving, purposeful, quietly powerful.

As this season invites reflection and renewal, I’m learning that living well isn’t about doing more, it’s about choosing better. Better boundaries. Better nourishment. Better ways of

spending the one thing we never get back: our time.

And that, for me, is what balance finally looks like.

A modern approach to smile refinement.

Composite bonding is a minimally invasive cosmetic treatment used to enhance the shape, symmetry and brightness of teeth. Using advanced materials and a highly detailed, artistic approach, our clinicians carefully sculpt and layer composite to create results that look natural, balanced and entirely bespoke.

It is an ideal option for correcting chips, uneven edges, small gaps and discolouration - often completed in a single visit and without unnecessary removal of tooth structure.

At Absolute Dental, every smile is designed with longevity, function and facial harmony in mind. The aim is never to change who you are - simply to refine what’s already there.

Mor A SawnaWhere Ritual Meets Warmth: A Sanctuary by the Sea

Tucked along the wild coastline of Barry, a quiet revolution in wellbeing is unfolding. This sanctuary isn’t simply a place to unwind—it’s a space where people return to themselves. Through the elemental power of heat, breath, and community, Kathryn has created an experience that feels both ancient and entirely new. At the heart of the offering is the wood fired sauna, a glowing refuge that invites guests to slow down, soften, and reconnect. Sessions are

into the heat. It’s a ritual of renewal—an invitation to begin again with intention, breath, and elemental presence.

A place to breathe deeply, connect honestly, and remember that you, too, are part of nature’s rhythm.

intentionally crafted, weaving together warmth, nature, and gentle guidance. Whether you arrive seeking restoration, clarity, or simply a moment of stillness, the space meets you exactly where you are.

The beloved Sunrise Sauna Sessions have become a signature experience. As the first light spills across the water, guests gather in quiet anticipation. Wrapped in blankets, feet in the sand, they witness the horizon shift from indigo to gold before stepping

Each month, the sanctuary also hosts Full Moon Sauna Ceremonies, where community and lunar rhythm intertwine. These evenings blend reflective journaling, gentle breathwork, and the deep release of sauna rounds. Under the moon’s glow, guests are guided to let go, listen inward, and honour the cyclical nature of their own lives. It’s a rare space where people feel held, seen, and part of something larger than themselves.

Beyond these anchor experiences, the sanctuary offers a growing calendar of wellness events, from seasonal rituals to community gatherings designed to nurture belonging. Every detail—from the scent of essential oils to the cadence of the language used—is crafted with care, inclusivity, and reverence for the land.

This is more than wellness. It’s a return to what matters. A place to breathe deeply, connect honestly, and remember that you, too, are part of nature’s rhythm.

Studio Tarw: Revolutionising the way Cardiff works out.

Studio Tarw wasn’t created to be just another fitness studio. It was created to become a part of Cardiff and its community.

Founder Alex Bull spent over a decade immersed in the London fitness industry, coaching at the highest level, learning her craft. Alex saw in Cardiff, an opportunity to build an elite studio environment, like those she had cultivated in London, but smarter, warmer, and more human.

Alex fundraised and built the studio while pregnant, finally opening the doors in July 2024 with her then 10-month-old on her hip. At the end of Tarw’s first year in business, Alex became a finalist at the Cardiff Business Awards for the Entrepreneur of

the Year accolade, shortly after giving birth to her second child.

In just 18 months, Studio Tarw has woven itself into Cardiff’s sporting and cultural fabric. The team has warmed up thousands at the Cardiff Half Marathon; powered a 24-hour spinathon for Big Moose charity and created moments that live far beyond the studio walls. Tarw doesn’t just host workouts - it shows up for the city.

Inside, the studio is split into three distinct spaces, each with its own energy, purpose, and loyal following.

The Ride Room is electric and high-energy, club-style cycling.

The Bootcamp Room is where strength meets structure. The Heated Room, is a sanctuary designed for those who understand the power of slowing down.

What ties all three rooms together is the same unmistakable atmosphere. The lights are low. The team is warm, knowledgeable, and genuinely invested. The vibes are high but never intimidating. Studio Tarw is for everyone, and everyone is celebrated. Strength looks different on everybody, and that’s what we champion.

“I began attending Studio Tarw while completing my yoga teacher training and quickly fell in love with the atmosphere. The yoga is beautiful, the pilates is challenging but grounding. Everyone is so encouraging and welcoming, it truly feels like a community. After finishing my teacher training, Studio Tarw was the first place I reached out to because I wanted to give back to the warm, supportive environment they have created and be part of helping others experience that same sense of belonging.”

Our Storyhow the So What Era began.

When three women metsomething powerful happened.

The paths they walked to get here were very different, but their values and vision beautifully aligned: they wanted life to be better for people. To help people feel more alive, more confident, more fabulous, and more connected to themselves and others.

Together, they imagined a movement — The So What Era! A living, breathing space where people could learn, laugh, heal, and become the icons we know they are.

Q: My husband of 20 years fears getting a vasectomy, and I would like to come off birth control. Do you have any advice?

A: After many years of marriage, conversations about contraception are best approached as a shared and thoughtful discussion. It can help to begin by explaining how long-term birth control has affected your own health and why you feel it may be time to consider an alternative. You may wish to reassure your husband that a vasectomy is a minor surgical procedure and one of the most reliable methods of male contraception available. It is carried out under local anaesthetic, typically takes less than 20 minutes, and patients are able to return home shortly afterwards with minimal

discomfort. Most men are able to resume normal daily activities within a few days and return to exercise after around 10 days.

It is important to acknowledge that a vasectomy is intended to be a permanent method of contraception. While reversal may be possible in certain circumstances, it cannot be guaranteed and any uncertainty about future family plans would be explored fully during a consultation to ensure an informed decision.

BEAUTY & WELLNESS

" With the right medical and psychological support, many women experience significant improvement and a return to emotional balance and wellbeing"

Q: My mother is currently going through menopause, how can myself and others, help her during this time?

In particular, her periods of depression are debilitating, and myself and my family just want to help.

A: Menopause can be a difficult transition for women experiencing symptoms and for those close to them, and for some women it is associated with periods of low mood or depression. These symptoms are common, real, and treatable and support is available. Other symptoms can include hot flashes, poor sleep, sweats, brain fog, emotional lability and intolerance, joint pain, vaginal dryness, reduction in libido and itchy skin, although this list is not exhaustive.

Encouraging your mother to seek a medical review is an important first step, as hormonal changes can significantly affect mood and may respond well to appropriate treatment. It is also important

to exclude any other cause of these symptoms. Alongside this, psychological support can be extremely helpful, offering a safe space to talk, develop coping strategies and feel understood. Breathwork and improving sleep quality have also been proven to ease many menopausal symptoms. Good nutrition and exercise can also improve both the physical and psychological symptoms of menopause. At Vale Wellness, this forms part of our integrated approach to care, and also provides treatment options and help for those individuals who are unable to take traditional hormone replacement therapy.

Approach the conversation with reassurance and empathy, and let her know she does not need to manage this alone. Offering to attend an appointment together can help make the process feel less overwhelming. With the right medical and psychological support, many women experience significant improvement and a return to emotional balance and wellbeing.

Q: My birth control (Copper IUD) is detrimentally impacting my libido, and I am unable to take hormonal birth control, do you have any recommendations on how to get it back?

A: It’s understandable to be frustrated if your libido has changed since having a copper coil. While it’s non-hormonal, the copper IUD can still affect wellbeing through heavier periods, discomfort, fatigue, or low iron levels — all of which can quietly dampen sexual desire.

The good news is that this is common and very treatable. A simple review of your symptoms, periods, iron and nutrient levels, sleep, and stress can often reveal clear, fixable contributors.

If hormonal contraception is not an option for you, there are still nonhormonal alternatives and supportive strategies to explore, including whether the coil remains the best choice for you.

A low libido is not something you have to accept as permanent. With the right support and a personalised plan, many women regain their energy, confidence, and enjoyment of intimacy.

BEAUTY & WELLNESS

Q: I suffer from seasonal depression, and January is really impacting my mental health. Are there any supplements or things I could be doing to help me?

A: If I could prescribe a winter holiday, I promise I would — January would be a much happier month for everyone. Sadly, sunshine isn’t yet available on the NHS or privately, but I’m working on it!

That said, seasonal low mood is very common at this time of year, and there are practical ways to improve how you feel. I always start with the basics: regular sleep, daily daylight

exposure (a short morning walk REALLY helps), gentle exercise, and balanced meals. These simple habits can have a surprisingly powerful effect on mood.

From a medical perspective, it’s often worth checking blood levels. Low Vitamin D, iron, B12, or a thyroid imbalance can all contribute to fatigue and low mood in winter. Correcting these can make a real difference.

Targeted supplements, taken appropriately, may also help. Vitamin D is particularly important at this time of year, alongside magnesium or omega-3 where indicated. At Vale Wellness, we use carefully

formulated in-house supplements based on individual needs rather than guesswork. Finally, do not underestimate the benefit of psychological support. Talking therapies can be especially helpful during the darker months, providing practical tools and reassurance until spring arrives. January can feel heavy, but it is temporary — and with the right support, most people feel noticeably brighter well before the clocks change.

Love Lagree

Love Lagree is a boutique fitness studio brand based in Wales founded by fitness professional and entrepreneur Lorraine Jenkins. The studios host small group classes specialising in the unique Lagree Method - a core, strength and conditioning full-body workout that utilises the patented M3S Megaformer machine. Originally hailing from California, the Lagree method and megaformer was created by fitness innovator Sebastien Lagree, to deliver a high impact but low intensity workout. With fans including Jennifer Anniston and Meghan the Duchess of Sussex, Lorraine recognised the gap in the UK market for the method, trained as an instructor and obtained her Lagree license, quickly identifying the Vale of Glamorgan as the perfect place to launch the brand in Wales - her homeland.

LoveLagree originally launched in a small Cowbridge studio in 2020, following the global pandemic. Lorraine had a website built, logo designed and named her studio ‘Love Lagree’ - after her fervent passion for the brand, and the typical reaction from ardent fans of the method. A following in Wales soon grew once people witnessed both the health and physical benefits of the workout, with classes quickly becoming booked up - clearly signifying a demand for the brand to grow and the studios to expand. Fast forward to today, there are two studios - Moreover, there are ten instructors hired by Lorraine, and even more Megaformers to facilitate the 250 studio visits per week. Love Lagree has truly signified a fitness milestone for South Wales.

Love Lagree is the only Lagree studio in Wales and was the first to launch in the UK, even before London.. It is a licensed Lagree studio leveraging Lorraine’s 20 years plus in the fitness industry. Unlike Reformer Pilates which it is sometimes compared

STYLE OF THE CITY AWARDS 2025 WINNER

to, the workout uses the patented Megaformer - all purchased by Lorraine for her business. All instructors at Love Lagree have been professionally trained to teach the Lagree Method, with Lorraine herself being trained in Lagree in California.

When Lorraine first purchased her seven Megaformer machines, and created a timetable in a small Cowbridge studio, she had no idea that the brand would evolve and grow as much as it has. Lead by an undeniable market demand and a highly dedicated community of Love Lagree fans and advocates. Whilst

growth has definitely been the most impactful achievement, Lorraine acknowledges her supportive team of ten in helping her grow the brand, but also, her clients. The Love Lagree clients are committed to the workout, are vocal about the benefits and fiercely supportive of the business. They have formed an entire fitness community that did not previously exist in South Wales. A community that has Love Lagree at its core.

Lorraine Jenkins is travelling to LA in February to train as a level 3 Master Trainer.

Cardiff to Creative Haven in Under Three Hours

In less time than it takes to watch a four-part Netflix series, you can leave Cardiff and the Vale and be sitting instead at a writer’s desk overlooking the stunning Tarren mountain range of mid Wales. professional Julia Forster, who runs the retreat, offers week-day guests the optional extra of a one-to-one author coaching session. She says: “The Writers’ Cabin offers everyone an opportunity to recharge their creative batteries and a natural landscape which acts as a balm to soothe the spirits.”

Four Quickfire Questions with Writers’ Cabin host, Julia Forster

Do I need to be a “serious writer” to book?

Not at all! We’ve hosted many non-writers who have come to seek out a quiet corner of Wales, where both beaches and mountains are within a stone’s throw.

How does a typical at the Writers’ Cabin unfold?

Imagine this: slow mornings over strong coffee.

Uninterrupted solo writing or reading time. Leisurely walks. An afternoon shopping in independent shops on Machynlleth high street. All rounded off with a private sauna session.

What do guests say they enjoy about the retreat?

They love prioritising their creativity in the Cabin, connecting with nature and the invitation to tune into their inner lives.

How long can I stay? How do I book?

3 night weekend stays or 4 or 7 night weekday breaks are available. Style and the City readers enjoy a £25 discount off all retreats booked until 31 August 2026 using code STYLE25 (subject to availability).

WEDDING GUIDE

LMB’s Top 10 Tips! Because your dress deserves its own moment…

Let’s be honest: the dress is the moment. Long before the flowers, the seating plan or even the shoes, it’s the dress that most brides dream about first. But finding ‘the one’ isn’t always as effortless as it looks on Instagram. In fact, there’s a lot more to it than simply falling in love at first zip. So, consider this segment your honest guide to navigating your journey.

One

Start looking earlier than you think!

Most dresses take six to nine months to arrive, before the alterations even begin. If you’ve got a set date then the sooner you start, the more relaxed the process will be. But also, be in the right mindset to go to an appointment and find the one.

Two

Keep your audience small

Too many opinions can cloud your instinct. Bring one or two people who truly know you and who won’t project their own wedding dreams onto yours.

Three

You don’t need to try on 100 dresses (Despite what TikTok says)

Just because TikTok may have told you that you need to visit 30 boutiques or try on 100 dresses doesn’t mean this is normal behaviour. Finding a dress isn’t about trying on as many as possible.

Four

Be open-minded

So many brides end up loving a silhouette they never expected. Try a few different shapes, you might surprise yourself.

Five

Alterations are where the magic happens

Your seamstress will transform your dress into the perfect moment. Consider them your very own fairy godmother where they can snatch that waist or create those sleeves. With us focus on shape, fabric and how you feel, the rest will be refined.

Six

More choice doesn’t always mean more clarity

After a while, dresses start to blur into one. Too many fittings can lead to fatigue, secondguessing and confusion- not the dreamy experience you were promised

Seven

It happens very quickly! Bridal stylists will tell you the same thing: many brides find their dress within the first five to eight gowns. That’s not scary, it’s exciting! It happens because we listen to you and know what you’re looking for. Trust that instinct when it arrives.

Eight

You should feel like yourself- just elevated.

If you feel awkward, overdone or like you’re playing dress up, pause. The best bridal look is the one where you feel confident, beautiful and unmistakably you.

Nine

Your reaction doesn’t have to be an Oscar-winning performance

Not every ‘yes’ comes with tears. Sometimes it can be that quiet certainty, a deep breath or simply thinking ‘I don’t want to take this off’. Not everyone cries and that is normal.

Ten

Algorithms don’t know your body

Ultimately, the right dress isn’t the one that trends best online. Trends can inspire, but they can’t tell you how a dress feels when you dance, hug, breathe and smile (and of course practise your best twerk). Trust the feel over the feed. lauramaybridal.co.uk @lauramaybridal

Zoe & Gareth Share their Special Day

Welsh Beauty & make-up

entrepreneur Zoe Trigwell shares all the details on her beautiful wedding at Sant Ffraed House with Style of the City.

How did you first meet?

We already knew of each other through mutual friends but it was Gareth who made the first step and messaged me on Instagram... The rest is history.

How did you propose?

We were in Las Vegas and Gareth proposed in front of the Bellagio fountains. I had a feeling something was going on because he was acting a bit strange! On our second evening, we went for a walk along the strip and he suggested stopping to watch the fountains, that’s when he got down on one knee.

Where did you get married?

Sant Ffraed House

What attracted you to the venue?

It just stood out. There’s nowhere else like it. We only looked at one other venue over the bridge near the Cotswolds, but I’m not really into the country style, I wanted

something modern. I used to be a bridal makeup artist, so I’d seen so many venues before and knew I wanted something that looked different. As soon as we saw Sant Ffraed House, we signed there and then. For me it’s the best venue in the country.

The whole team was super professional, everything ran to plan and on time. Everyone went above and beyond
Lauren Amelia Photography. @LaurenAmeliaPhoto

What was your first dance song?

Benson Boone – Beautiful Things. I’m a massive Benson Boone fan and we both love that song. It quickly became our song.

What made your wedding unique?

Our flowers were next level, absolutely incredible. I wanted to make a statement and the florist completely smashed it. We also set our outdoor ceremony up more like a catwalk rather than the traditional layout, which our guests loved. I surprised Gareth with a tattooist

Any final words about your venue?

Our coordinator Jessica was fab and we specifically requested Greg on the day, we got on so well. The whole team was super professional, everything ran to plan and on time. Everyone went above and beyond, especially with my gramps who’s in his 90s, they were incredible. The venue itself looks amazing, but what truly makes it special is the amazing team behind the scenes.

to get matching tattoos, which he had no idea about! The tattooist also stayed for our guests for two hours, which everyone loved.

What did you wear?

My main dress was from All About Eve in Newport, which I absolutely loved. In the evening, I changed into a mini dress from Eva Ashley in Cardiff, which was perfect for the party.

What advice do you have for others?

Get a wedding planner if you can. The team at Sant Ffraed House were amazing, but having a planner meant I didn’t feel stressed at all. And honestly if you really want something, just do it and worry about the cost after.

Sarah Louise Wedding Planner

Meet Sarah Louise, a leading wedding planner in Wales, known for her meticulous attention to detail and flawlessly executed weddings that capture elegance and style.

It’s nice to meet you! I’m Sarah. A mum, wife, best friend and aesthetic driven wedding planner, dedicated to creating beautifully designed, meticulously planned and flawlessly executed weddings across the UK.

I live in the Vale and work nationwide, supporting couples who value thoughtful detail, calm expertise and a wedding that feels as good as it looks.

My journey into wedding planning has been anything but ordinary. I grew up balancing two very different worlds, training as a British Champion Latin dancer alongside Amy from Strictly Come Dancing, whilst studying law at university. Somewhere between rehearsals, lectures and competitions, I worked at a wedding venue, witnessing hundreds of couples say “I do” and quietly falling in love with the emotion, energy and significance of a wedding day.

After graduating, I spent almost a decade as Head of Legal. A career that gave me a formidable foundation in problem solving, logistics and attention to detail within highly pressurised environments. While the structure and responsibility suited me, what always mattered most was working with people. Managing complex moving parts, thinking on my feet and remaining calm when the pressure was on. Those skills underpin everything I do today.

When my little boy arrived, I made what felt at the time like a slightly mad decision to turn my long standing passion for weddings into a business. I stepped away from the corporate world to create meaningful, beautifully executed celebrations for incredible couples. This does not feel like work. It is a genuine privilege, and one I take very seriously.

I

manage all communication, logistics and administration, offering practical solutions and ensuring nothing is overlooked

I care deeply about the details. I am often described as the calm in the chaos, quietly in control, instinctively organised and completely invested in ensuring you feel relaxed, confident and excited throughout the process. Expect military level planning, intuitive support and just enough personality to make the journey as enjoyable as the day itself.

Planning a wedding can involve hundreds of hours of decision making, coordination and detailed administration. My Full Wedding Planning service removes the pressure, allowing you to enjoy the process with clarity, confidence and ease.

From the outset, I work closely with you to shape and refine your vision, sourcing and curating a trusted team of suppliers aligned to your style, priorities and budget. I manage all communication, logistics and administration, offering practical solutions and ensuring nothing is overlooked, so you can focus on the excitement of what lies ahead.

You will benefit from regular calls and meetings, alongside ongoing WhatsApp support. I keep you informed on key milestones, while quietly managing everything else behind the scenes with care and precision.

I also offer Wedding Management for couples who have already secured the majority of their suppliers and would value expert guidance to bring everything together seamlessly, alongside on the day coordination.

You are my kind of couple if you want a wedding that feels meaningful and emotive, not just visually beautiful. You value how the day flows, how it feels to be in the room and how your guests remember it. You care deeply about considered design, real flowers and beautifully layered tablescapes. You trust direction, appreciate clarity and want to be fully present on your wedding day.

COOKING & TRAVEL

Giovanni’s: Where Film, Food and Community Meet

For more than forty years, Giovanni’s has been woven into the cultural fabric of Cardiff. As the longest-established independent family-run Italian restaurant in Wales, it is known not only for its hospitality but also for its enduring commitment to creativity and community. Founded by Giovanni Malacrino, whose contributions range from pioneering Cardiff’s Café Quarter to preserving the former Arms Park turf, the restaurant has long served as a gathering place for ideas as much as for people.

That spirit was on display recently when Giovanni’s Restaurant in Cardiff Bay hosted the preproduction launch of Iniquity, the debut feature film from Welsh production company Calon Films. The event brought together figures from South Wales’ creative and business communities to mark the start of a project rooted in national history and contemporary relevance.

Iniquity tells the story of Dic Penderyn, the innocent man executed after the Merthyr Rising of 1831. The film explores themes of injustice, resistance and working-class dignity, while aiming to bring an important Welsh story to an international audience. Guests, including Charlotte Church and former Welsh rugby international Scott Quinnell, attended in support, alongside the film’s directors and producers.

Giovanni’s involvement in Iniquity reflects a wider ethos of “Making A Difference” that extends far beyond the restaurant trade. For many years, Giovanni has provided meals for people experiencing homelessness, created a therapeutic mini-farm for children with autism

and Down syndrome, raised funds for local charities, and supported emerging artists and filmmakers by offering his venues as platforms for their work.

This blend of enterprise and social purpose was recognised recently when Giovanni Malacrino was named Entrepreneur of the Year, an award celebrating both his business achievements and his contribution to Cardiff’s civic life.

As Iniquity begins its journey, it does so in surroundings that symbolise more than longevity. Giovanni’s stands as a reminder that food, film and philanthropy can share the same table — and that a restaurant can be both a place of gathering and a force for good in the city it serves.

COOKING & TRAVEL

If

you are feeling the cold

of winter in your bones at the moment, then I have some delicious ideas for warming the soul. Following

the over-indulgence of the

festive season- which I love, I am always in need of a pick me up, but not a Tiramisu! (which translates as just that- pick-me-up).

My palette and appetite is in need of invigorating flavours, but food that is lighter on the calories. I want sustenance, good nutrition, but yummy and satisfying. After all, the idea of eating a salad on a cold winters’ day makes me want to reach for another layer of thermals and dive under a heated blanket!

Spicy food is the answer, and I don’t mean necessarily chilli hot, although they can send your inner-heat levels up. I mean gorgeous aromatic, spiced dishes that smell inviting, get the juices flowing and also offer the promise of deliciousness.

From the fiery food offerings of India, Thailand, Malasia and Mexico, to the gentler sensory teasers of Lebanon, Israel, Syria and Morocco, we as a nation are in love with the cuisines of these countries.

I teach many of these cuisines in my cookery classes, and use the influences of their classic dishes to form the menus for my Supper events and cookery demonstrations. People’s reaction to the aroma of a pan of spices gently roasting is one of pure enjoyment. As the scent fills the air, they instantly inhale deeply, savouring the moment. They get quietly excited, you can see wide smiles form, and then the chatter starts about how amazing it smells, how delicious the dish is going to be, and how they can’t wait to cook and obviously eat what they are going to make.

I consider myself a bit of a spice guru, sharing tips on buying, storing, roasting, blending, and how to use them in seemingly endless ways. One thing is for sure, you can never get bored of spicy food.

If you think about the tropical spice belt, where they grow, and then how they travel the globe peppering the cuisines of the world, their influence is mind blowing. Just think of the rich, dark moles (molays) of Mexico that use about 6 different chillies and various spices, or a skilfully made Mughal biryani consisting of fragrant rice and spice marinated meats, or the gentler classic spice mix of ras el hanout to make a lovely Moroccan tagine. Many of the spices used in these classic dishes are similar, but are utilised in different amounts, and also cooked in different ways to give dishes their unique and complex flavours.

Spices are no stranger to our shores, as a nation, we love a good curry. Even the use of a single spice such as pepper to finish just about any savoury dish, or a simple, but exquisite touch of fresh grated nutmeg on a fab British rice pudding, or a baked custard tart is very hard to beat.

Using spices in every day cooking also has its health benefits, as they are packed with antioxidants and beneficial compounds that support heart health, blood sugar control, and immunity, just what we all need after the Christmas splurge. For instance, spices like turmeric, ginger, cinnamon, and believe it or not, chilli, have anti-inflammatory benefits, brilliant for the digestive system.

We can leave the biology there and concentrate on what to do with these beauties. One of my favourite dishes to wake up to on a day off is breakfast eggs. It lifts the spirits, tastes delish, and fills you up with goodness, tick, tick, tick!

Here’s what you do: put a large frying pan over a medium heat with a couple of tablespoons of rapeseed oil, or butter (yes, its good for you!) add a thinly sliced red onion and sweet pepper, cook until soft with a lid on. Stir in 1 teaspoon of garam masala, 1/2 teaspoon turmeric and 1/4 teaspoon Kashmiri chilli powder, cook for 1 minute. Sprinkle in 1/4 teaspoon sea salt. Using the tip of your spatula, make 4 spaces, 1 for each egg. Crack the eggs in and op the lid back on. Cook until the top f the yolk turns opaque, but there is still a little wobble. Remove the lid, dollop 4 blobs of Greek yoghurt, add some chopped fresh coriander, a fresh chopped chilli if you like it hot, and finish with a sprinkle of garam masala. Yes! its so delicious.

That’s breakfast/brunch done, here are a couple more recipes to warm the cockles of your heart, they will also double up for a spicy Valentine’s supper. I have not gone for the obvious curries, but am leading you into a taste fest, and everything is doable in advance, just a little last minute cooking. Enjoy!

Recipes

Let’s start with your own delicious aromatic home made Garam Masala

• 2 medium bay leaves

• 1 tablespoons green cardamoms

• 1 tablespoons cloves

• 1/2 tablespoon black peppercorns

• 4g cinnamon sticks

• 1/4 small nutmeg

• 2 star anise

• 2 black cardamoms

• 2 strands mace

• 2 tablespoons cumin seeds

• 2.5 tablespoons coriander seeds

• 1/2 tablespoon fennel seeds

What you do

Break down the larger and tougher spicescinnamon, nutmeg, cardamom and mace in a mortar and pestle.

Preheat a frying pan, add all the spices and dry roast over a medium heat for 4 minutes, stirring all the time. Tip into a bowl to cool briefly, then process to a fine powder in a spice grinder. Spoon into a clip/ screw or ziplock bag.

Keep in a cool, dark cupboard for up to 2 months.

Use in curries, but also as a seasoning for finishing curries, rice and vegetable dishes. It is also delicious on your breakfast eggs.

Tomatoes and Paneer Roasted with Garam Masala

• Paneer:- Serves 4

• 350g panner cut into cubes

Marinade:

• 1tablespoon mustard oil

• 1tablespoon lemon juice

• 1teaspoon garlic paste

• 1teaspoon garam masala

• 1/2 teaspoon turmeric

• 1/2 teaspoon Kashmiri chilli powder

• 1/2 teaspoon sea salt

Roasted Tomatoes:

• 500g ripe tomatoes- I use different sizes and colours

• Mustard oil for drizzling

• 1 rounded teaspoon garam masala mixed with 1 flat teaspoon sea salt and

• 1/4 teaspoon sugar + 1/4 teaspoon Kashmiri chilli

• 1 teaspoon fennel seeds

What you do

In a large mixing bowl, put all the ingredients for the marinade and mix together. Add the cubes of paneer and coat well. Cover and set aside to marinade for at least 30 minutes- 2 hours will give a deeper flavour.

Meanwhile prepare and cook the tomatoes: Cut the larger tomatoes so they are a similar size to the smaller ones- they should ideally be halves pr quarters.

Mix together the garam masala with the salt, sugar and chilli powder. Tip the tomatoes onto a line baking sheet, spread out and brush with the mustard oil. Sprinkle liberally with the spice mix, followed by the fennel seeds.

Roast in a low oven at 120c fan/gas2 for an hour until the tomatoes are slightly shrivelled and smell jammy- this may take a little longer depending on the size of the tomatoes.

Add the cubes of marinated paneer, turn the oven up, and roast for 15 minutes until the cheese is golden. Alternatively, you can fry in a little oil until golden on both sides. Serve with naan bread

Indian Style

Battered Fish

• 1 1 teaspoon cumin seeds

• 1 1 teaspoon coriander seeds

• 1 1 teaspoon black peppercorns

• 1 1/4 teaspoon ajwain

• 1 4 x 150-200g fresh fish fillets

• 1 2 tablespoons lemon juice

Batter

• 1 100g chickpea flour

• 1 3 tablespoons rice flour

• 1 1 tablespoon ginger and garlic paste

• 1 1 teaspoon Kashmiri chilli powder

• 1 1/2 teaspoon turmeric

• 1 Chilled sparkling water or Indian lager

• 1 Sea salt flakes to finish

What you do

Place the cumin, coriander, black peppercorns, sea salt and ajwain in a pestle and mortar and pound until you have a course mixture, not a powder.

Place the fish in a large, flat dish and drizzle the lemon juice all over. Pour the ground spice mixture over the fish and press it in so that it adheres to the fish. Set aside for 5 to 10 minutes while you make the batter.

Pre-heat your oil in a deep fat frying or a wok.

Pour the flours into a large mixing bowl and add the chilli powder and turmeric and mix well to combine. Add the garlic and ginger paste and then slowly start pouring in the ice cold lager (water) whisking as you do.

It is important to pour slowly as you want the batter to be like double whipped cream and not at all runny. If you mistakenly add too much lager, you will need to whisk in more gram flour. The batter should be thick enough to adhere to a to the back of a wooden spoon. It needs to adhere to the fish after all!

Dust the fish with the plain (all purpose) flour and shake off any excess flour.

Dip a fish fillet into the batter and then carefully and slowly lower it into the hot oil.

Fry for 4 - 5 minutes or until the fish is crispy brown. Transfer to a hot plate and keep warm while you fry the remaining fish.

Sprinkle with the flaky salt to serve.

Coriander Relish- use this with either dish

• 1 bunch (60g) coriander

• 2 tablespoons ground almonds

• 2 green, finger chillies- seeds left in, super finely chopped

• 2 cloves garlic, peeled and grated

• Juice of 2 limes- about 50ml

• 1/2 tsp sea salt

What you do

Finely chop the coriander, place I a mixing bowl. Add all the other ingredients, leave to mingle for at least an hour.

Indian Butter Sauce

• 2 tablespoon butter

• 130g thinly sliced onions

• 1 tablespoon mixed garlic and ginger paste

• 1-2 green finger chillies, split

• 1-2 teaspoons Kashmiri chilli powder

• 1.5teaspoons garam masala

• 1/2 teaspoon cumin

• 1 teaspoon coriander powder

• 1/2 teaspoon methi leaves

• 1 piece cinnamon stick

• 4 green cardamom pods

• 4 whole cloves

• 600g tomato passata

• 160ml double cream

• 40g plain cashews

What you do

Cook the onion in the butter for about 8 minutes until soft and lightly golden.

Stir in the garlic and ginger paste and toss in the chillies, stir through and cook for 1 minute.

Stir in all the spices to create a masala paste- add a little water if it looks dry, cook for 1 minute. Pour in the pasta and cashews and simmer gently for about 15 minutes, staring occasionally. Blitz to a creamy consistency, pour back into a pan, add the cream and a little water or stock if needed.

Note: This is great with spiced, fried fish, mixed with chicken tikka to make butter chicken, and grilled paneer.

What Happens When You Actually Listen

Listening is often treated as a courtesy: polite, passive, and easy to claim. But real listening is active. It requires sharing power, sitting with discomfort, and acting on what you hear. At Voices from Care Cymru, listening is not a slogan. It is how we work.

For decades, care-experienced children and young people in Wales have been spoken about, designed for, and planned around. Policies have been written without them in the room. Services have been shaped by assumptions rather than lived reality. Too often, this has produced systems that manage risk but fall short on stability, dignity, and belonging.

Listening is not only good practice; it is a rights obligation. Children and young people have the right to be heard in decisions that affect their lives

Our organisation exists because listening was missing, and because children and young people demanded something different.

Listening, for us, does not begin with a survey or a oneoff consultation. It begins with trust: spaces where children and young people are believed, not tested, and where lived experience is treated as expertise. It also

means recognising that those who live inside the care system understand it in ways no framework or inspection ever can.

When listening is genuine, it changes the questions being asked. Instead of “How do we improve outcomes?”, the question becomes “What does a good life look like to the people living it?” That shift turns participation into partnership.

Over time, children and young people with care experience in Wales have repeated the same truths. Instability causes harm. Decisions are too often made far away from the people most affected. And when profit exists within children’s care, it distorts priorities. These are not abstract critiques. They are rooted in real experiences of frequent moves, disrupted relationships, and support shaped around processes rather than people.

Listening meant taking those concerns seriously, even when they challenged longestablished norms.

That approach shows up across our work. Through national and regional participation groups, children and young people shape agendas rather than simply respond to them.

Through summits and direct dialogue with decision-makers, they set priorities and scrutinise progress. Through programmes focused on wellbeing, transition, and corporate parenting, they define what good support looks like in practice, and where systems fall short.

Voices from Care Cymru

In 2026, Wales introduced legislation to end profit in children’s care. This moment did not arrive suddenly, nor was it inevitable. It was shaped by years of representing children and young people whose voices challenged the idea that children’s lives should generate shareholder returns. The legislation is a structural shift, but it also signals what becomes possible when lived experience shapes policy.

For Voices from Care Cymru, this is what we are here for. We do not speak on behalf of children and young people. We create the conditions and platforms that enable them to be heard directly, credibly, and consistently.

What makes this commitment distinctive is that it is built into our governance. Careexperienced trustees hold the majority vote on our Board, meaning lived experience is not advisory but decisive. Children and young people are not consulted at the edges of power. They hold it.

Our work is also explicitly rightsbased. Voices from Care Cymru exists to uphold and promote the rights of children and young people as set out in the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child. Listening is not only good practice; it is a rights obligation. Children and young people have the right to be heard in decisions that affect their lives, and to have their views taken seriously.

This is the kind of style that matters in a city and a nation: how organisations show up, how power is shared, and how consistently children and young people are included in decisions that shape their lives.

At its core, Voices from Care Cymru is about shifting culture: from listening as politeness to listening as responsibility. Because when institutions listen properly, they do not just hear stories. They change structures.
