of a masterful local home renovation by a multiple award-winning contractor. I had the opportunity to walk through this home and marvelled at the scope of the project, the creativity of the design and the superior craftsmanship evident throughout the space. The homeowners were no strangers to renovation and had a clear vision of what they wanted. The results were nothing short of spectacular.

the agenda Welcome to Style’s Winter 2019 edition. We are proud to present Cody Glass as our cover story this issue. In fact, it’s always a pleasure to profile young Manitoba athletes who’ve worked hard and made it to the big leagues! It’s also nice to know that while Cody rises in the NHL ranks playing center for the Las Vegas Golden Knights, his fellow Manitobans are lauding his success. And yes - you can bet no one is prouder than his family. On the home front, this issue is all about renovations. In Beauty Meets Balance, Aileen Goos Berard captures the essence

Also included in this edition is coverage on the grand prize in the 2019 HSC Millionaire Lottery - a fully renovated 1950s home that boasts a Prairie mid-century aesthetic. Renovated by another local award-winning builder, there was no stone left unturned with this remarkable project. Check out Lea Currie’s story A Grand Prize Home Run for more details. Seeking inspiration for the transformation of your own space? We have included a special section on renovations, with a sampling of what consumers can expect from local companies with booths at the upcoming Winnipeg Renovation Show. Held at the RBC Convention Centre from January 10-12, the show provides an excellent opportunity for those considering

a reno to find industry experts and great sources for related products and services. I’ve gone through the renovation process several times now, and have gained valuable personal insight on what projects like these entail. There’s no question about it – the process can be very stressful. No matter how large or small, a remodelling project will have an impact on your family. There will be dust and disorder, along with tradespeople coming and going until the work is complete. However, with solid plans and proper drawings, well considered forward planning, and good communication with the contractor and / or trades involved, you can mitigate the chaos substantially. If you’re not up to the task of managing your own reno, hire a contractor. Clearly, we have excellent well-established renovators in Manitoba. You might find exactly what you’re looking for at the Winnipeg Renovation Show. See you there in January!

here are some homes that take your breath away. This 3,500 square foot multi-level home in St. Vital certainly fits that description. From the moment the glass-paned doors open, guests stop in their tracks to marvel at the view both inside and outside the home. The first impression from the foyer is awe-inspiring.

It’s the finished masterpiece of Hammerdown Home Renovations & General Construction Inc., a Winnipegbased home design-build company that worked with the homeowners on three projects before this one – a rapport that certainly helped turn their dream into reality. “Previous renovations have always had the same quality, but the amount of detail and the size of this renovation required us to call in and collaborate with some of our trusted sub-trades,” says Tyson Hiebert, manager and owner, Hammerdown. “A lot of people poured a lot of effort into this project – there were days that we had 10 or more people working on the home. We kept things running very efficiently.”

A focal point in the kitchen is the large island, covered in crisp white marble and complemented with a warm wood finish.

The perfectly curated kitchen, which features an abundance of sleek, white cabinetry from Western Millwork and brilliant white marble countertops, is a home chef’s dream.

An amazing first impression To call the walk-in closet in the foyer spacious is an understatement – it’s larger than most closets in average homes and features a wall of built-in storage for footwear. It sets the stage for what’s to come throughout the home. The entire main floor is an ample space that features a perfectly curated kitchen, dining and living room. The kitchen is a site in and of itself, featuring a mix of materials that achieves a space that’s crisp and clean, yet warm and welcoming all at the same time. Expansive white marble countertops and white cabinetry are complemented by a backsplash tile made of pearly-white shells. Those cool white

tones are beautifully balanced with warm wood tones and impeccable lighting fixtures from Robinson Lighting that add the perfect finishing touch to the space. The artistic wood pieces are carried through to the dining area, which features a custom-built living edge dining table and bench. Oversized picture windows that beautifully frame a magnificent view of the mighty Red River create an Instagram-worthy backdrop, and provide easy viewing access to the backyard with an in-ground pool that offers hours of enjoyment during warmer months.

Turning a dream into reality The homeowners had been eyeing a space in the area for a while and quickly purchased the Victoria Crescent home when it became available. Although the house had good bones, as they say, it carried with it the style of a home built in the 1960s. As much as the new owners loved the home and the location, they wanted to make it their own and had very definite ideas about how to transform it into the enviable abode guests see today. The homeowners worked closely with Tyson’s team, whom they’d worked with on three other projects and were convinced they could turn their vision into reality. The interior demolition started in October of 2018 while the design process started, and by the following August their vision was complete. It was a massive undertaking that had its share of challenges – the biggest challenge was waiting on permits, says Hiebert. “With this home backing onto the river it then required all permits to be approved by water ways,” he says. “This created several challenges due to the Flood Fringe changes. This home was originally built in 1960, and since the great flood of 1997, the City of Winnipeg has implemented enormous challenges when working with an existing structure.”

Relaxation at its finest One of the biggest transformations of the renovation involved turning this five-bedroom home into a two-bedroom home, all contained on the upper level. Two of the bedrooms were converted into one larger child’s bedroom that is spacious enough to contain a walk-in closet, traditional bedroom furniture, TV and toy area and homework Beautiful vinyl plank flooring from The Floor Show spans most of the main floor, including the spacious living room, which is a welcoming space to cozy up and marvel at the view from the oversized picture windows that beautifully frame the backyard.

station, with an ample amount of space left over to play. Venture further into the upper level to find a sprawling master bedroom that takes over what used to be the space of three bedrooms prior to the renovation. Hiebert and his team reconfigured the entire floor plan to create the new master suite. An enviable walk-in closet complete with plenty of built-in cabinetry to display clothing and accessories takes up the same amount of space as one of the former bedrooms. The custom built-in woodwork continues into the bedroom area, with a custom-made bed frame and velvet-covered headboard that stretches to the ceiling. Pendant lighting adds the right amount of light – and sparkle – to the room. The bedroom area features more oversized windows that highlight the beautiful backyard and river. It also boasts a double-sided fireplace that faces a gorgeous ensuite with a generous sized freestanding tub on one side and a large shower complete with Neolith slabs and rain showerhead on the other from Dynasty Bathrooms.

Of the many eye-catching highlights in the room, one of the most impressive pieces has to be the marble tile columns created by Carrara Tile & Marble, with each of the 1”x1” size tiles painstakingly placed by hand.

Room to play Every square foot of this home was designed to create joy, and that concept certainly carries through to the lower level, which features a walkout patio and large windows to again showcase the view. Even the laundry and storage area are unlike those found in traditional homes – they’re generously sized and meticulously wellappointed spaces. There are two main entertaining areas – one seemingly designed for adults, while there’s no doubt the other was designed with a 10-year-old in mind! The one side features a massive entertainment area with big-screen TV, theatre style seating, fireplace, a built-in bar area with a fridge and sink, and a live-edge wood ledge opposite the bar. When you can tear yourself away from this space, you’re lead to an equally impressive one – every child’s dream play area with a floor-to-

ceiling custom-built peg board that displays a literal arsenal of Nerf guns with a hand-painted target that was created by Western Millwork. A giant Lego table with built-in storage that houses thousands of Lego bricks sits in front of the Nerf gun wall. An oversized comfy couch separates the dedicated play area from the entertainment system that offers hours of Disney+ viewing pleasure. “I think that nothing about this renovation was standard or easy. Yet, after all the hard work, I have clients that are extremely pleased with me and the service that my company has provided,” says Hiebert. “Everyone at Hammerdown appreciated the opportunity and strived for perfection. I feel that is the definition of a successful renovation.”

Hammerdown is known for its award-winning home renovation and design projects – from concept to completion. As a design-build company, they take care of everything from planning, permits and interior design, as well as the actual construction. “The benefit of us taking care of every step of the process, using our own core team and trusted partners, is that there is accountability and a shared goal throughout your project’s planning and construction stages from every person involved,” says Tyson Hiebert, owner and manager. “A home renovation project has hundreds of decisions and timelines to keep on top of. Having a company that handles every step of the process ensures that the best decisions are made, the timelines are kept, and the budget is maintained.” With 15 years of experience in the industry, the company has an impressive trophy case to their credit, including four Gold Renovation of the Year awards, one Silver Renovation of the Year award, and a Consumers Choice award. Hammerdown is also a proud RenoMark Renovator, which means that they are held to a higher standard than the rest. “We have always worked to those standards and we always strive to improve and to learn,” says Hiebert. “We are proud to be part of an organization that encourages its members to constantly raise the bar and set the standard of excellence in our industry. As business has evolved I have always strived for ways to make the renovation experience as fun and easy as possible. We take care of engineering, permits and now have an interior designer on staff.” ‘Quality and integrity are built in’ is more than the company’s tag line; it’s evident in all of their projects, especially the Victoria Crescent home. Hiebert and his company have a long and trusted work relationship with the family who owns the home – this is the fourth project they’re worked on together, but nothing of this magnitude. “This is something that has become normal,” says Hiebert. “We have a long list of clients that we have performed multiple renovations for over the years. We’ve always delivered a quality renovation and have always been honest and fair. Success is not always easy, but it is satisfying.”

A friend at the bank When homebuyers and home renovators are looking for lending solutions, Palmina Thomson has the answers. Palmina is a Scotia Bank Home Finance Advisor and her mission is to make the mortgage and loans process as simple and comfortable as possible for her clients. “We have a wide range of packages designed to fit the lending situation,” says Palmina, pointing to financing products for new home purchase, home renovation and improvement, and refinancing. “My approach is a personal one and I’m available when clients are. This helps makes things easy at a time when a new home purchase or renovation can cause a bit of stress. We understand and work to take out the bumps,” she says, adding that a key to her success is to simply answer the phone. “When you call me, I pick up. I’m available seven days a week and often find myself answering texts at 11:00 PM. I work from home and my underwriter works from home. I know who is handling the file and as such we can keep a tight rein on the approval process so that i’s get dotted and t’s get crossed in a timely, orderly way that meets house deal deadlines.” Palmina starts the ball rolling with a meeting where she can offer advice on down payment, payment schedules, risk avoidance, rates and terms. For example, a couple doing a home renovation and looking for project financing needs

to understand the different pieces in the lending puzzle. Here, she advises getting a solid quote that can establish a budget for the reno. Then, people need to establish the value of the home following construction. “Once the bank can see that the work being performed will increase the value of the home we can get to work on a loan package,” she says, noting that a home renovation loan typically does not go beyond 80% of the property’s value. “All financial institutions are competitive. These days it’s about more than just a great rate. Certainly, we have great rates, but we also have the type of service that can take some of the anxiety out of what can be the biggest purchase a person or couple will make in their lives. For example, I’ll do a family budget to show the level of debt they can afford. It’s important to discover where the comfort level is in a lending package. I’ve been doing this for 10 years and I’ve seen that a well-tailored loan never stretches the client beyond their means. This is where we find solutions,” she adds, inviting people to discover the comfort of casual banking.

Whether you are a first time home buyer or looking to upgrade, I’ll help you find a mortgage solution to meet your unique needs. With over twenty years of experience, I’m committed to providing you with fast service, competitive rates and trusted advice. Call me today and let’s get started on a customized plan that works for you. Palmina Thomson Home Financing Advisor 204-805-5042 palmina.thomson@scotiabank.com

W

olseley is now just a bit more delicious with the opening of Ruby West this past November. Located at the corner of Westminster Ave and Ruby St in the community’s vintage downtown, Ruby West is operated by Laura and Jamie Hilland, and friends Erin and Peter Keating. The group met at Wolseley’s Laura Secord School where they were on the Parent Board. Keating had been running Australia-inspired restaurant Billabong in Osborne Village, and the others could see the need for a new café in the neighbourhood. The group brainstormed and purchased a bookstore / coffee shop that had been on the current site. They then spent almost a year redesigning the space, coming up with the menu and jumping through administrative hoops and hurdles before opening to kudos from the community this past month. Today, the old bookstore is a distant memory with Ruby West sporting a cool, clean, slate grey interior with seating for around 35 patrons. The patio is a work in progress and will take shape as the weather improves after May 2020. Tables are well spaced and the center area is given up to a long sharing surface with a dozen or so high chairs. Windows flood the room with natural light. We dropped in for lunch and found the room busy but calm. The 13-item menu was well considered and nimble. Our choices included the Waffle Flatbread, the Ruby Red Tomato Soup and the Fish Tacos. The waffle was a delight. Savoury and well prepared with just a light crustiness, it delivered on taste and was not overwhelming in terms of size. The Tomato Soup came to the table piping hot. It was garnished with a generous sprinkle of Parmesan cheese and offered a balanced flavour profile that was not overly

tart. The tacos were a mouthful that came as an ample portion. Created using smoked salmon and finished with spicy mayo, maple ponzu and black sesame, these fish tacos are a cut above the usual offerings found across the city. Other items on the opening menu include a Sushi Bowl, Chicken Tacos that feature an interesting avocado basil sauce, Sausage Rolls, and a very nice looking adult-oriented Grilled Cheese that uses Muenster and comes with Chimichurri for dipping. Dessert is covered with a three-item list that includes a mouthwatering Dark Chocolate Lava Cake and a Port Pairing that comes through with blue cheese, gingersnaps and figs alongside a tawny port. The wine list is respectable and on-tap beers are from TransCanada Brewing. Given the fact that Ruby West had only been open for a few days, we were prepared to cut the establishment some slack. Going in we figured there might be issues with some of the basics as the crew gathered experience following opening day. What we found was a restaurant well on its game. The kitchen was quiet and well ordered, and dishes were coming through at a steady rate. Service was professional and welcoming with a ‘glad-to-see-you’ approach that is characteristic of good small neighbourhood cafés everywhere. Dishes run from around $8.00 to $16.00. Closed Mondays.

Creating a new “home” for local artists BY AILEEN GOOS-BERARD PHOTOGRAPHY: JOHN JOHNSTON Paul Toews brings artists and art enthusiasts a new experience with EAGLERIDGE ONE FIVE EXHIBITIONS. The unique residential art gallery set in Toews’ home is an intimate 700 square foot space comprised of two viewing salons which are totally dedicated areas set aside from the residential living quarters. Nestled beside a picturesque lake in Whyteridge in the southwest section of Winnipeg, the setting of the gallery is a scene to behold, in and of itself. It features high gloss marble floors, custom hanging systems, neutral walls and track lighting to best showcase the pieces. The gallery can accommodate as many as 50 medium to large-scale works at any given time. This winter, the gallery is proud to feature the work of Canadian and international artist Lily Lim, whose work has appeared in exhibits in Winnipeg and from Singapore to Mexico. A teacher and professional artist, she continues to create commissioned pieces for international art collectors. (A sample of her work can be seen in the accompanying advertisement on this page as well as in the Gift Guide section of Style.) Toews, owner and curator of the gallery, is an advertising specialist and an accomplished artist in his own right, whose work will also be presented in the gallery this season. His acrylic on canvas pieces are sought after by private collectors around the globe. Everything about EAGLERIDGE ONE FIVE EXHIBITIONS is unique – from the concept and location to the acquisition of artwork. If you’re looking to add a piece to your collection from one of the featured artists, the gallery is offering risk free benefits, which is unheard of in the industry. Any work with a selling price of $500 and over may be returned within 15 days for a refund plus a coupon worth a specified amount off a subsequent purchase. Toews invites any academically trained artists who are looking for a new “home” in which to display and sell their work to apply for an exhibition. (The gallery does not assess a commission on sales but does charge a monthly rental fee. The gallery can provide support advertising materials and media relations at an additional cost.) EAGLERIDGE ONE FIVE EXHIBITIONS is located at 15 Eagleridge Court in the heart of Whyteridge. The gallery is open Saturdays, December 14, 21, and 28, noon until 3 p.m. or by appointment. The gallery is also open during winter 2020 by appointment only. For more information, please call 204.287.8999 or email muzarts@mymts.net

Rising Through the Ranks BY KELLY GRAY PHOTOGRAPHS: VEGAS GOLDEN KNIGHTS

T

he winter sun has just poked over the top of Winnipeg’s elm canopy and you have finished loading the kids into the back of the minivan for a run over to the rink for early morning hockey practice. On the drive, you wonder why you do this every week. Then you turn on the radio and the sports announcer mentions that 20-year-old local boy Cody Glass just got a three-year $1.7 million deal with the Las Vegas Golden Knights. You look at the team in the backseat and wonder what the future holds for these little Gretzkys. Glass was drafted sixth overall by the Las Vegas Golden Knights in 2017. Cody agreed to a three-year, entry-level contract with the team. That first year he was invited to the Golden Knight’s training camp and then sent for further development to the Portland Winterhawks of the Western Hockey League and the Chicago Wolves, the Golden Knight’s AHL farm team. Cody made his debut in the NHL this October when the Knights took on San Jose in the

season opener. At 6’ 2” and 190 lbs, Center Cody Glass is described as a quiet playmaker with strong skill sets. Wearing the #9 jersey he scored his first major league goal that game, which featured a 4-1 takedown of the Sharks. Glass hails from West Kildonan where he grew up alongside older brother Matthew, a top performer in his own right who is now studying medicine at U of M. And, while it is well noted that Cody is a self-starter and hard worker, his dad Jeff can take a fair bit of credit for getting him on the path to hockey stardom. The story goes that Cody was not too thrilled about the ice or skating way back in the early days when he was aged three and four. But Jeff, an athlete and seasoned soccer coach, knew the rink was a good place for a Winnipeg boy. He laced his son’s skates and taught him the basics, and then Cody took it from there. It helped that older brother Matthew was playing, which got Cody feeling a bit easier about the skates, the stick and the ice.

Cody’s abilities with the basics were in evidence the other night when he scored the opening goal against Toronto. Perfectly placed just outside the crease, he took a puck that wobbled off Anderson’s stick and helped it into the net for a power-play goal that set Vegas on the road to victory. Expect to see a lot from this Winnipeg-grown sports talent as he edges into his career. Already, the world’s hockey writers are shining a spotlight on his abilities and thoughtful approach to our national pastime. Overall, it’s been a bit of a ride for Cody from the rinks of north-end Winnipeg to the palmlined streets of Vegas, but it’s a ride gladly shared by the thousands of Winnipeg youth that take on the NHL dream with every drill, every tournament, and every weekend morning that their moms and dads drive them to the rink.

Jeff is quoted as saying, “He doesn’t get handed a lot. I could only put him into certain camps that we could afford. For him to accomplish what he’s accomplished on the means that we had for him - it means a lot and it shows how much he really wanted it. He had his mind set years ago that he was going to be an NHL player. I never said you’re not going to be able to do it. I just said it’s going to take a lot of work to get there and he put his heart into it, so I’m just happy to see how he pushed himself.”

Thoughts My wife and I loved the home featured as the cover story in the Fall 2019 issue of Style Manitoba! Lots of great features loaded into this 1700 + square foot home, which looks and feels spacious. The myriad of beautiful details throughout the home, including that unique and stunning feature wall, add so much to its design impact. The team at Avanti Custom Homes have earned our respect for their excellent design and creative finishing details. Dirk & Jayden Holloway, Winnipeg If you’re looking for an informative and entertaining education on wine and beer in a relaxing environment, check out The Common in the Forks, where tickets can be purchased for Uncommon Pours. (My husband and I read about the event in Style’s Fall 2019 issue). The Common’s internationally acclaimed sommelier Veronique Rivest does not disappoint – Uncommon Pours is well worth the ticket price. Miranda Berard, Winnipeg I love getting Style Manitoba at my home, and always enjoy reading about the locally built quality homes and other lifestyle products we can purchase or access here. In an era where Big Box stores have seemingly taken over the market, it’s great to see Style profile companies like Roger Watson Jewellers, who recently celebrated 40 years of jewellery design in Manitoba. Congratulations to the Watson family – we look forward to seeing more of your ‘timeless treasures’ for years to come! Celeste Atkins, Winnipeg

I’m forever scouring through magazines for decorating and design ideas, so it’s always nice to get a new issue of Style Manitoba each season. My current quest is for landscaping ideas that could work in my own outdoor space, so I was delighted to come across the Outdoor Living section in the last issue–particularly the two-page spread on a job done by Prelude Landscaping. I’m looking forward to Style’s Spring 2020 edition, which will likely have even more creative landscaping ideas. Hopefully I can nail down a design and landscaper by the time summer 2020 rolls around. Naomi Angstrom, Winnipeg

2 large eggs 2 Tbsp (25 mL) sesame oil ½ medium onion, chopped 1-inch (2.5 cm) piece of ginger, finely chopped 1 clove of garlic, minced 3 Tbsp (45 mL) low-sodium soy sauce 4 cups (1L) vegetable broth 2 Tbsp (25 mL) miso paste 2 cups (500 mL) fresh shiitake mushrooms, stems removed and sliced 1 large carrot, thinly sliced 1 sweet pepper, chopped 1 cup (250 mL) baby bok choy, chopped 3 to 4 green onions, sliced diagonally (reserve garnish) 1 3-ounce (100g) packaged ramen noodles Toasted sesame seeds, garnish 1. Place eggs in a single layer in a small pot and cover eggs with cold water. Over high heat, bring eggs to a rolling boil. Turn off heat and cover pot with a lid, let stand in water for 10 minutes for hard-cooked or 6 minutes for softcooked large eggs. Drain water and immediately place eggs into an ice bath. Rapid cooling will prevent a grey-green ring from forming around the yolks. Peel eggs and slice lengthwise in halves. 2. Add oil in a large stockpot over medium-high heat, add onion and ginger and sauté until onions are translucent. 3. Add garlic and stir frequently for 1 minute. Whisk in soy sauce, broth, and miso paste. 4. Add mushrooms and carrots and bring stock liquid to a boil, reduce heat to a simmer. 5. Add peppers, green onion and baby bok choy. Simmer 5-8 minutes until tender. 6. Taste test the broth and add salt to taste if required. (soy sauce, broth and miso paste will add sodium to this stock) 7. Remove soup from the heat and add ramen noodles. Allow to soften. 8. Divide soup into bowls and serve topped with cooked eggs. 9. Garnish with green onion and toasted sesame seeds. BOOKSHELF Five Wives (Harper Avenue) by Joan Thomas

Winner of the Governor General’s Award for English Language Fiction, Five Wives, by Winnipeg’s own Joan Thomas, is a compelling and richly detailed story of faith, grief, colonialism, and doubt. Based on a true story of five missionaries murdered in 1956 in the rainforests of Ecuador by the people they were trying to convert, it’s a nuanced, complex, and absorbing work that delves into the minds of the missionaries and the wives and family they left behind.

One of the most lauded novels of the year, Michael Crummey’s novel of two orphans eking out a living in a remote Newfoundland Cove at the end of the 18th Century is fascinating, surprising, even shocking. After their parents and baby sister die during one terrible winter, Evered and Ada get on with the business of surviving in this tale of hardship, survival, and the human spirit. It’s an utterly believable and beautifully written, one-of-a-kind take on a coming-of-age story.

Lampedusa

(McClelland & Stewart) by Steven Price Steven Price’s latest is a superb novel based on real-life figures. Giuseppe Tomasi, the last prince of Lampedusa, lives in sun-drenched Sicily after the Second World War. Weary after witnessing the destruction of his home during the conflict, he struggles to write a novel to bear witness to the end of the world he knows. Lampedusa is a powerful, emotional story of great need and the sacrifices required to create great art. Published after his premature death, Tomasi’s The Leopard (Il Gattopardo in the original Italian) is one of the greatest works of Italian, and world, literature of the 20th Century.

TUBBY HAYES QUARTET Grits, Beans and Greens – The Lost Fontana Studio Session 1969 (Fontana/Universal) This is a remarkable year for unearthed jazz treasures, with lost albums by John Coltrane and Miles Davis earning considerable posthumous attention. Another artefact may bring greater recognition at last for English saxophonist Tubby (Edward Brian) Hayes, who blew brawny tenor with a deep reservoir of ideas. Grits, Beans and Greens was cut in 1969, following the fantastic Mexican Green, but the tapes languished in archive purgatory, possibly because such tough music had gone out of fashion. Any worry of cobwebbed reverence is blown away quickly by the opening “For Members Only,” where Hayes leads the charge straight from the start and sets the velocity that slows only for the balladry of “You Know I Care.” This was a hot and wily quartet, with pianist Mike Pyne matching the leader for ideas, Ron Matthewson digging in with sinewy bass and drummer Spike Wells in frisky form. Faithful mastering means this music will grab you by the shoulders as well as the ears. (A double-disc version adds a contemporary date with guitarist Louis Stewart, and Universal is also readying a 13-disc box of the complete Fontana recordings).

(Impulse!/Universal) Following the recent Both Directions at Once, John Coltrane’ vaults have released another surprise. Blue World is the soundtrack music from 1964 for Le Chat dans le Sac (Cat in the Bag), by independent Quebec filmmaker Gilles Groulx, for a hitherto unknown chapter in the saxophonist’s great quartet with McCoy Tyner (piano), Jimmy Garrison (bass) and Elvin Jones (drums). There are fewer surprises this time, with two takes of the beautiful “Naima” and three of the easy-loping “Village Blues” among the eight numbers, but the title track entrances with a pulsing keyboard figure and is reason enough to invest, and the seven-minute “Traneing In” seems to be the one chance the band had to stretch out beyond the film’s requirements.

WAYNE SHORTER Five Original Albums (Blue Note/Universal) Wayne Shorter is still going, but this budget-priced package of five albums from 1964-67, overlapping his invaluable time with Miles Davis and ahead of Weather Report, captures a remarkably fertile patch as smallcombo bandleader, composer and tenor player. Shorter arranges as beautifully as he plays, with the jazz waltz of “Lost” setting a graceful tenor solo against a chorus of James Spaulding’s alto saxophone and Freddie Hubbard’s trumpet, and “Oriental Folk Song,” reviving a traditional Chinese melody, confirming his sixth sense for understatement. “The Soothsayer” confirms a heroic hard bop player as well, driven by the unstoppable rhythm section of Ron Carter and Tony Williams. Other great players abound, including Herbie Hancock and tireless drummer Joe Chambers.

BUDAPEST FOR BEGINNERS By Greg Klassen

A

fter a week in hectic Paris, there was relief in taking a two-hour flight to Budapest and landing in a city with a much more laidback vibe. Of course there are tourists in Budapest, too. But they’re more inclined to be sitting in cafes or in steaming water (public baths) than to be standing in line with a list of attractions in their dog-eared Lonely Planet guide. I felt reinvigorated during the first evening. The city invited us to explore. We strolled over the Chain Bridge, from our hotel on the sleepy Buda side to the more café-commercial beat of the Pest side of the river. The Danube glowed golden in the evening light, and as is often the case in European capitals, there seemed to be more walkers than cars. We had an early dinner at an informal restaurant called Hilda, with its dazzling blue tiled walls and tables. There are plenty of gourmet and international-style restaurants in the city, but if you’re a traditionalist, there are some great versions of old favourite Hungarian meals like goulash and chicken paprikash to be found, even in the modern eateries. WINTER 2019 | STYLE MANITOBA | 41

As the sun set over the silhouette of the skyline punctuated with steeples, we headed to the Danube to gaze at the spectacle. Buildings seemed to have enlarged and the Hungarian Parliament Building commanded the view with its neo-Gothic splendour –enormous, luminous and proud. It was almost like the city was holding its breath, unable to process so much beauty. These evening strolls were the best part of our time in Budapest. We looked forward to our nightly promenades. Sometimes we would climb the steep steps up to the Buda Castle or we would just walk by the water and watch the tourist boats (and the tourists) pass by. Budapest is a city legendary for its thermal baths. Taking the waters here is how to feel like a local. It’s where Hungarians meet friends, catch up on gossip and relax. Some of the bathhouses are a legacy of the Turkish occupation while others are more modern. But regardless of when they were built, there’s a commonality to Budapest bathhouses. The indoor portions feature a variety of pools, ranging from warm to hot to scalding hot. You can almost always get a massage. And many also have outdoor pools and saunas. It’s necessary to visit more than one bath to really understand bath culture. And if there’s a must-visit bath, it’s Gellert. It’s the grandest of them all and an art nouveau masterpiece. Gellert features the most beautiful

42 | STYLE MANITOBA | WINTER 2019

indoor swimming pools in the city, where doing laps is somewhat like taking a dip in a cathedral. On a sunny day, you can park yourself outside and there’s even a wave pool. If you love a Turkish vibe, take a walk down the street to Rudas, a bath that’s been around for more than 450 years. A mix of old and new, Rudas seems purposely designed to confound tourists. The place is a maze of rooms, with pools of varying temperatures and saunas so hot you need to keep a towel over your head to survive. The highlight of the old section is a dome with coloured stars over an octagonal pool of hot water. In the swimming pool, I was chastised by a hairy, barrel-chested man, who enforced the mandatory bathing cap regulation with an alarming stoicism. At the entrance, I was given a wristband, which I used frequently to move from room to room. But first you have to get by the grouchy man who rents towels. When I suggested the price was a little steep, I was told that you get most of the money back upon exit.

Buildings (definitely book in advance), walk about the old city or the hills surrounding Budapest. The Castle District is a lot of uphill walking, but it can also be quiet, safe and romantic. The castle itself is teeming with tourists, especially at sundown. But it is worth enduring the crowd as you stare forward to watch the darkness descending as the spectacular lights of the city below ascend. Glorious! Bridge tours are available. Eight bridges span the Danube River in Budapest, linking Buda and Pest, each with a fascinating tale to tell. The oldest is the famous Chain Bridge, which was opened for public traffic in 1849. These bridges represent the history, architecture, commerce, spirit and soul of Budapest. There are also many architectural tours. We took a foot tour of the city’s glorious art nouveau-era edifices. Not only is this a great way to see some of the city’s building gems, it’s wonderful to be with someone who knows the city well so you don’t have to worry about getting lost for several hours.

If you’re unfamiliar with art nouveau, it was a popular style of art and architecture between 1890 and 1910. The style was inspired by natural forms, such as the sinuous curves of plants and flowers. The Hungarians added their own stamp, in a style called Secession. One of the most famous architects was Odon Lechner. His Postal Savings Bank building is an astonishing piece of architecture, with bricks, mosaics and ceramics combining to bring alive his original vision. Budapest is a glorious city for strolling. It invites you to slow down and savour all aspects of this beautiful European city that remains in my imagination as the magical one that unfolded before me during my first night of wandering. Greg Klassen is a travel, gardening and performing arts enthusiast.

I obviously enjoyed myself, since I went back a second time, albeit armed with knowledge from my first visit. This time I kept walking past the swimming pool and more heated pools, up three flights of stairs and found a rooftop bar and huge hot tub overlooking the city. I would spend endless evenings here if I lived in Budapest. The massages are recommended. One more thing: no photos! You won’t just look like a tourist if you try and take some, they will boot you out. There are many tours to take in the city. You can visit the interior of the Parliament WINTER 2019 | STYLE MANITOBA | 43

estled within the popular and growing Northwest Winnipeg neighbourhood of Amber Trails, StreetSide Developments’ have launched their latest townhome community, Amber Grove Condominiums. Amber Grove, located at 388 Pipeline Road, is a unique address that sets itself apart from other multi-family communities in the area based on the sheer number of options available to buyers. Whether purchasers are looking for a bungalow style suite with ease of access, a twostorey unit with room for a large family, or even a suite with an income property on the lower level, Amber Grove has a home for everyone. This is the first time StreetSide has built in the northwest corner of Winnipeg, but after seeing a large demand for both bungalow style and multi-family developments in the area, they jumped at the chance. “We are extremely excited to be building in Amber Trails,” says Kelli Roach, Sales and Marketing Manager with StreetSide Developments. “This is a new area for us, and so far the response has been great with many

people coming for tours of our new display suites.” There are a total of six different floor plan designs to choose from at Amber Grove, ranging from one, two, three and four-bedroom suites in either a townhome or bungalow style. Starting at $237,000, the suites range from 978 square feet up to 1,346 square feet. In addition to the varying floor plans and layouts available to buyers, options also include private, fencedin backyards, decks, basement finishing, attached garages, and more. Amber Grove’s first building release has already seen purchasers moving in, with further possessions taking place in late 2019/early 2020. “Amber Grove designs have an open concept with gorgeous options for interior finishes. The nice thing about purchasing in the early stages of construction is that you can choose your finishes with our design consultant and really make it your own.” says Roach.

Come home to better living BY KELLY GRAY

A

mong Winnipeg’s new home developments, the neighbourhoods of Bridgwater are a big deal. Located in the city’s rapidly expanding south-end off Kenaston Blvd, it is a multifaceted development with Bridgwater Forest, Bridgwater Lakes and Bridgwater Trails offering housing products that include luxury residences to contemporary townhomes and condominiums, as well as everything in between. Services are many. The Town Centre, in the heart of the neighbourhoods, offers a broad range of stores and facilities where big-box retailers join forces with small independent merchants in a powerful mix of commercial attractions. Leasing agents Cushman & Wakefield report Bridgwater Town Centre services all of the Waverley West area with close to 40,000 homes and some 90,000 residents within 5 kms of the commercial site. The vision of the Town Centre is to be a natural gathering place with extra-wide sidewalks along Centre Street and parking located at the rear of businesses to help make the street front more pedestrian-friendly. Envisioned for the future will be sidewalk cafes, restaurants and plaza areas.

With traffic counts beyond 40,000 cars per day, the area has attracted a solid slate of prominent retailers to the shopping district. Anchors such as Save On Foods and Shoppers Drug Mart are prominent, as are MLCC, Tim Hortons, and major financial institutions. There is a medical clinic, dental centre, vet, and physiotherapist, as well as a music school and restaurants - not to mention a huge Co-op gas bar with a car wash and c-store.

Workout wonderland

To keep up with all the shopping opportunities, people have to be in top shape. Helping Winnipeggers meet their wellness targets is Altea Active, a new fitness facility that is now open in Bridgwater Town Centre. Altea Active is an 80,000-square foot, $30 million state-of-the-art fitness centre that is the second-largest facility of its kind in Manitoba. According to Altea Active president, David Wu, the Bridgwater Centre building will feature two 25-metre saltwater swimming pools (one for families and one for women only) as well as five boutique group exercise studios that will deliver more than 180 fitness classes a week, and an enclosed Starbucks café along with a Smoothie Bar.

“Historically, we cater to the suburban community,” says Wu, mentioning their previous company which built and operated 15 Ontariobased Movati Athletic locations for 20 years. Shortly after their exit from Movati in July 2017, they started working on creating the new improved concept. Altea Active in Winnipeg is the group’s flagship concept and the first in Canada. “We toured the city in April of 2018 and realized that the city is missing the type of full-service club and amenities that we envisioned. Then we looked at the demographics in the Bridgwater area and saw the growth rate and saw this area as a perfect fit for our concept. This will be a family destination for fitness. While mom and dad are doing yoga or aquafit, the kids can be involved in supervised rock-climbing or ninja courses. We have long winters and the coming Altea Active site will be a fun and affordable social hub for the community,” he says. Investigate the opportunities for better living. W

hile it can be said that every past era has in some way shaped today’s society, few have had as significant and lasting an impact on contemporary home design as mid-century modern. Clean lines, bright, open spaces and abundant natural light are all cornerstones for contemporary homes and have direct lineage to the mid-century aesthetic.

While 426 Hosmer Avenue in Tuxedo possessed many characteristics typical of a mid-century modern Prairie home, and would have been fine with some fresh paint and minor upgrades, Maric Homes Renovations envisioned more. “We looked at the bones and saw an absolute ton of potential and just kind of went at it. There was real beauty already there, waiting to be uncovered,” says Peri Maric, co-owner of Maric Homes and vice president of architectural design.

Rich window treatments and furniture from Interior Illusions suit the mid-century Prairie style of the home splendidly. Supplied by All Weather Windows, floor to ceiling energy efficient windows with distinct black frames add a dramatic note to the space.

The company followed two main principles for the renovation of the 1956 home: keep the Prairie midcentury aesthetic as the main feature and not significantly alter the home’s place in the neighbourhood.

“We wanted to keep it familiar in the neighbourhood. We wanted to celebrate the beauty that was already there.” While Maric acknowledges that the house was in good shape, it wasn’t consistent with what the public would expect from a home today. So the team stripped it right down to the studs

and trusses to make substantial improvements everywhere. The walls and concrete were reinforced, new insulation and a new HVAC system were installed, and energy-efficient windows, doors, plumbing and lighting were added.

The bamboo deck, available exclusively at Springhill Lumber, features air and water tight planks that make it easy to maintain, do not require paint or stain and stands up to the elements.

Springhill Lumber was brought in to reinforce the roof and floor structure to allow load-bearing walls to be removed. The original layout, congested with hallways and segmented living areas, was transformed into one big, bright living space. To bring in light, floor-to-ceiling

FloForm Countertops provided Corian countertops for the bathrooms and kitchen, including the expansive 18-foot island, while appliances from Coast Appliances offer style and modern convenience at once. Light fixtures from SuperLite hearken back to the ‘50s, adding the perfect finishing touch. windows with distinct black frames from All Weather Windows were installed. The rest, as Maric says, naturally fell into place. Function played a huge role in the renovation plans. “When we build or renovate a space, we not only look to improve the beauty, we look to improve efficiency and utility. Something only pretty that offers no real use isn’t good enough. It has to possess form and function equally.” The 2,280 square foot home previously had four bedrooms, but one bedroom was removed to make room for the master bedroom’s luxurious ensuite. Maric also added a brand-new foyer to the existing structure. Where once there was just a small vestibule, there now is a large, bright receiving area with completely custom-milled built-in storage accented with translucent onyx panels to let in even more natural light. As well, the existing basement was cramped with minimal head clearance, according to Maric. To resolve this, the company completely excavated the basement and dropped the new floor, creating an extra foot of ceiling height. One of the highlights for the team was the fireplace, which is a hallmark of a mid-century home. Within the cavity of the old fireplace, a new wood-burning fireplace from Heat Savers was put in. “We wanted to do something completely new but rooted in a period-authentic detail. We really worked hard structurally and aesthetically to get a wood burning fireplace to work and it did,” says Maric. Interior designer Caroline Maric worked with suppliers to find the perfect materials to fit the mid-century Prairie aesthetic, such as the modern light fixtures that hearkened back to the ‘50s from SuperLite Lighting and the rich window treatments and furniture from Interior Illusions that would look right at home in any modern home, but suited the mid-century Prairie style splendidly. “Any opportunity where we could incorporate a clean, modern take on something from that era, we jumped on it,” says Maric. “We looked for details from that period. Brass, dark marble, lots of built-in millwork. Soft leather couches. We wanted to look for pieces that were thoroughly modern but had classic lines and textures.”

Thanks to these carefully selected details, the home celebrates the era with a modern spin. The maple and walnut panelling and millwork by Grade A Millwork provides ample storage with built-in shelves, including a 15-foot wall

Stylish, durable, virtually seamless

of storage in the bedroom hallway. A black kitchen is softened up with bright fixtures for a throwback to the ‘50s. The hidden bar in the kitchen has a mirror behind it (because what mid-century home didn’t have a bar with a mirror?)

The spacious master bedroom is the perfect retreat for winding down at the end of a busy day.

Outside, the house still fits into the neighbourhood, as Maric originally envisioned. But where once it faded into the background, it now stands out. The stonework exterior uses Tyndall stone sourced locally from Gillis Quarries in Lundar. “Tyndall is something that everyone in Manitoba recognizes. It’s something we’re all familiar with. It’s now shipped all over the world and it’s a very coveted product. But it’s been used in Manitoba homes for decades – go down any street in Winnipeg and you’ll find a home with Tyndall stone,” says Maric. The spectacular bamboo deck, a product available exclusively at Springhill Lumber, is a thoughtful feature that shows the reno team was looking at every detail, inside and out. The house had no deck at all previously, but rather than install typical cedar tone decking, the choice to go with a rich bamboo deck was done for practical and aesthetic purposes. The bamboo planks are air and water tight so the deck is easy to maintain, no paint or stain is needed, and it stands up to the elements.

The master ensuite offers luxury with a retro vibe. Shodor supplied the glass shower doors, as well as mirrors for the his and her vanities, while SuperLite provided the unique lighting fixture suspended between them, along with the mirror-mounted sconces.

“Every single one of us is so proud of this place. This house is special,” says Maric of the final product that took seven months to complete. It was all for a good cause: the house was the grand prize in the 2019 HSC Millionaire Lottery. Valued at more than $1.4 million before taxes, this stunning property drew a lot of attention. “You could kind of sense as you’re working on a design when something is really coalescing. We just knew as we were working on this project that it was going to be a home run. We’re excited about it and the reception has been entirely positive. It’s nice to have confirmation from the public that they loved our vision and final product,” says Maric. This is Maric Homes’ eleventh year partnering with HSC Millionaire Lottery, and the company is proud to be aligned with this admirable organization. Furnishings and accessories from Interior Illusions set the tone for the bright lower level. “We had a very specific vision for the home, but getting to that point required a lot of partnering up. Getting to turn key was collaborative. There were lots of little spots throughout the house where we leaned on our suppliers to really come through and they did,” says Maric, who is quick to give credit to the suppliers, including Advance Electronics, which set up

an automated lighting and electronic system, and FloForm Countertops, which provided the Corian countertops for the bathrooms and kitchen, including the astounding 18-foot island. Appliances from Coast Appliances round out the kitchen, offering a contemporary touch and modern convenience at once.

For one lucky person, Maric Homes created a beautiful home that isn’t an overhaul but rather keeps the comfortable style that suits the home and community. “A renovation should not just be a match and a chainsaw. It should really reinvigorate the familiar.” With one foot in the 20th century and the other firmly in the 21st, this home is certainly a grand prize winner.

Building the builder’s future.

“I’m a big fan of The Winnipeg Renovation Show,” says Baeumler. “For both homeowners and contractors, the show provides an excellent opportunity to see what’s new and exciting in the market, meet local suppliers and vendors, and gives them the chance to meet and hear experts speak on a variety of topics related to home repair, design, maintenance and more. Truly, it’s the best place to get advice and inspiration for your home.” Other features include the Manitoba Home Builders’ Association sponsored ASK A RENOVATOR, where attendees can pose questions to on-site pros who will offer tips and tricks to get those stalled projects and stalled imaginations moving. Experienced leader For more than 40 years, Winnipeg-based SunShade Products Ltd. has been helping homeowners turn exterior spaces into interior spaces with industry leading sunrooms that add value and enhance lifestyle. Simply, SunShade products bring the beauty of the outdoors inside, helping people make the most of our challenging environment. According to SunShade president Steve Sarens, the company has seen tremendous success working with homebuilders to create masterpieces in new residential construction. However, the company cut its teeth working with Winnipeg’s wealth of older homes where renovations can be a challenge. Again this year, SunShade will share this renovation experience from its traditional booth location at the Winnipeg Home Renovation Show (January 10-12/RBC Convention Centre). “Creating the right sunroom for an older home can be a challenge, but we have learned a lot over the decades we have been in business,” says Steve, mentioning that their advantage is that Glastar Sunrooms by SunShade are the result of a custom approach where everything is done in house by craftspeople who understand the renovation market. And, SunShade is the only sunroom manufacturer in North America that can obtain permits to build sunrooms on unpiled decks.

“Our unique flotation system works both seamlessly with older homes and is compatible with new home construction and design,” he says. Planning on attending the Winnipeg Home Renovation Show? Drop by Booth 114 on the

Quality flooring, superior installation Flooring that is waterproof, doesn’t stain and is almost maintenance free? Who’s ready to jump in with both feet? “It’s a waterproof floating floor that is very popular in the industry. It’s kind of taken over the market,” says Ryan Nemis, owner of Ken’s Carpets & Urban Home Style Centre, of Torlys luxury vinyl plank (pictured in Beach House). Because it is water resistant, maintenance friendly and withstands wear, it can be put in any kind of area in the house, including entranceways, living rooms, kitchens and basements. The only question is, what colour to choose? With a range of options, from rustic to contemporary, it’s easy to find the look to suit each corner of your home. Installation is also a breeze with Ken’s Carpets, the exclusive local dealer of Torlys luxury vinyl plank flooring. As Winnipeg’s longest-serving flooring retailer since 1965, the company prides itself on its service, and they back it up with a one-year labour warranty. “We’re not interested in being the biggest. We’re interested in having the best service,”

says Nemis. “Our installation crews are trained properly, and we have three project managers that go on site to make sure the job is going smoothly and clients are getting qualified installation. A lot of our business comes from our service.”

Ken’s Carpets has a large stock of the luxury vinyl planks, for easy, same-day delivery. And the price is just as attractive as the final look. Stop by their booth at the Winnipeg Renovation Show to check out flooring trends for 2020. WINTER 2019 | STYLE MANITOBA | 59

All in a day’s work Whether holding stacks of dirty plates, heaping bowls of food, hot pans or even keys and stacks of mail, in any busy home, the kitchen countertops will see a lot of use. Because a counter is a work surface – and it’s meant to work for you. So while looks are a consideration, countertops must ultimately be prepared to withstand a great deal of wear and tear. For unmatched durability, the Neolith sintered stone is a resilient work surface. Exclusive to Carrara Tile & Marble Ltd., it does not require any special maintenance and can withstand direct heat, which any chef knows is a must. “Function, like aesthetics, is a major determining factor in people’s choice for a counter. The fact that this product is a zero maintenance product other than periodical cleaning goes a long way in making the decision process an easy one when selecting this product over others,” says Matt Vaccaro, Carrara sales associate and grandson of founder Matteo Vaccaro. The Estatuario Silk colour (as seen in the Maric Homes showhome at 643 Bridgewater Lake) has a timeless marbleized effect. “The seamless transition from countertop to backsplash really highlights the visual aspect of this product,” says Vaccaro.

The natural elegance definitely catches the eye, but don’t be fooled – this work surface is ready to work.

Bring Life to Your Rooms

R

emember when living rooms were once treated as museums? You couldn’t step foot in one for fear of ruining the perfectly symmetrical vacuum lines or getting yelled at by mothers everywhere. Thankfully, those days are gone. Now, living rooms are actually for living: where meals are eaten, televisions are fought over and naps are had. “Our product in general is all about function. We don’t produce product that is just pretty to look at and is not functional. This is not going to be that formal living room that every kid had growing up and couldn’t use. Our pieces are meant to be used and enrich the lives of our customers,” says Leanne Ryan, category manager for Ashley HomeStore. Each Ashley store is thoughtfully set up by lifestyle rather than product. With all tastes accounted for, choose the collection that suits

you, from contemporary and vintage casual to grand elegance. The exuberant Urbanology lifestyle is a fun mix of city roots and eclectic living, geared towards creativity. “The Urbanology customer might like more of that mix-and-match feel to their environment,” says Ryan. “They’ll take great basics from the pieces we offer and use their functionality and cater their space to really make it their own.”

BY LEA CURRIE

The Urbanology lifestyle line is meant to be enjoyed and can merge seamlessly with other pieces or be easily modified. Thankfully, with reasonable prices, it’s furniture you can use and not just admire from afar. Vacuum lines and velvet ropes have no place here!

The Neira sectional is a true testament to the flexibility of the Urbanology line. The two individual pieces of this sectional are finished onto themselves, so you can separate into two sofas if the situation or room requires it. The popular Starmore dining room set has become an Ashley staple but was recently redesigned with a fresh look. It flaunts clean lines along with thoughtful details to make life easier, such as drawers for cutlery, napkins – or unwanted broccoli! Beautiful upholstered chairs are available, but with the Urbanology lifestyle, you’re free to mix and match the chairs you love most. When the entertaining is done, the Kisper bedroom set blends contemporary and mid-century styles. A brushed dry-brown wood finish adds dimension to the clean lines and makes it easy to add your own complementary details, whether it be bright pops of colour or calming neutrals.

Primal Appeal

There is a primal pleasure that comes from watching wood burn – the aroma, the dance of the flames, the crackle of the logs. “Wood is wood. You can’t beat wood,” says Helen Peters, owner of Winnipeg’s Classic Fireplaces. In the debate of wood versus electric fireplaces, she insists wood wins, and not just for its ambiance. “It’s the most comfortable heat, no question about it. You get a real fire. This is wood burning. This is the original form of fireplaces.” It’s also a great backup in a power failure. Natural gas and propane fireplaces can also be used as a backup heat source. Electric can be used for ambiance and most have a heater for warmth. The Vision stove from Supreme is the industry’s first and only see-through woodburning stove. Its one-of-a-kind design allows you to enjoy the blaze from both sides, while its freestanding form ensures a continual flow in open concept homes. Boasting up to 2,000 square feet of heat and a built-in grill for indoor grilling when it’s -40, this unique centerpiece is both practical and beautiful. As it’s imperative that a heat source be installed correctly, Classic Fireplaces prides itself on “only the best service” and has been honouring that commitment for over 25 years. The company specializes in complete installations for fireplaces, stoves, outdoor firepits and firetables, as well as BBQs.

Find Your Guiding Light

More than 140 years after the light bulb was invented, this farmhouse-style chandelier would look right at home in Thomas Edison’s laboratory, hanging in a downtown condo or lighting up a house in the country. “The wrap-around style allows flexibility in hanging the individual lights at staggered elevations, and helps create that ‘shabby chic’ homecrafted look,” says Simon Simkin, president of Winnipeg’s Super-Lite Lighting. To achieve this popular rustic style, keep it neutral with black cords, or alternatively, contrast the real-wood beam with red cords for vibrancy that goes beyond the bulbs. Use clear LEDs to achieve the carbon-filament look from days gone by and get the energy savings. And don’t fuss too much over the cord placement – the haphazard quality helps to create that nonchalant elegance. Part of the Farmhouse Collection by Artcraft, a Toronto-based manufacturer, this piece is produced in Canada, which Simkin says is a rarity these days. To shed more light on this distinctive chandelier, visit Super-Lite, Manitoba’s largest lighting showroom with more than 3,000 lighting options. “We have the most diverse range of products displayed to help the consumer visualize these in their own home,” says Simkin. Super-Lite is locally owned and operated, and has been proudly serving Winnipeg for over 65 years. 64 | STYLE MANITOBA | WINTER 2019
