the agenda Welcome to Style’s Winter 2018 edition! We are delighted to present The Celtic Tenors as our cover story this issue, perfectly timed with the holidays ahead when the trio brings the soul of the season to town. Kelly Gray had the opportunity to speak with all three tenors for Songs from the Heart, reflecting on their worldwide success and the influences that shaped their musical repertoire. On the home front, Carly Peters captures the essence of a custom crafted contemporary home in The Rule of Three, while top flooring trends for 2019 are covered in Well Grounded. Along with Style’s regular design and décor columns, we have included a special section on renovations, with a sampling of what consumers can expect from local

companies with booths at the upcoming Winnipeg Renovation Show. Held at the RBC Convention Centre from January 11-13, the show provides an excellent opportunity for those considering a reno to find industry experts and great sources for related products and services. I’ve gone through the renovation process at least four times now, giving me personal insight on what projects like these entail. There’s no question about it – home renovations can be very stressful. No matter how large or small, a reno project will have an impact on your family. There will be dust and disorder, along with tradespeople coming and going until the work is complete. However, with well considered forward planning, and good communication with the contractor and / or trades involved, you can mitigate the chaos substantially. Following are a few solid tips on how to ease the stress throughout the remodelling process: 1) Do Your Homework – Come up with solid plans that include drawings with precise measurements. The drawings will be your most valuable tool for getting the job done right (well worth the money). Research contractors if you want someone else to manage the project, viewing previous work they’ve done and checking their references carefully. The same applies to tradespeople if you’re managing your own reno. You want to hire only those who can execute the work to your standards, within budget and on schedule.

2) Set the Timeline - Before the reno begins, get the schedule in place with your your contractor / tradespeople. A good contractor will establish the order of various aspects of work, schedule the trades and try to minimize the time you are without water or power, etc. Consider your family’s needs when setting timelines to ensure the least disruption possible for your household. With a schedule in place, you will know what to expect and when. 3) Choose Supplies & Finishes – Decisions should be made ahead of time on literally everything (fixtures, fittings, finishes, flooring, etc.) to avoid supply and construction delays, extra expenses and high pressure hasty decisions that you may regret later. 4) Have a contingency budget to cover extra, unexpected costs (there’s always something!) A good rule of thumb is to add 15% to the overall budget. 5) Visit the Winnipeg Renovation Show for expert advice and to find almost everything you need for a reno project!

Schulz Construction crafts a contemporary home with a classic design rule in mind

ur brains just love odd numbers. They challenge us mentally; make things more dynamic and natural to the eye. As you look through 17 Tadman Crescent, you can see how Schulz Construction Inc. has harnessed the power of three – an age-old design tenet – to create a vibrant, bright, modern home that not only has visual appeal but offers up thoughtful amenities and elements that apply to this theory. The idea to create a contemporary exterior set against the natural surroundings of the Crystal Lake neighbourhood in Oakbank came from co-owner Peter Schulz. While scrolling through one of his favourite sources of inspiration, he was inspired to mix angled shapes and natural elements, such as the charcoal brick, with manufactured materials. The cedar-look panels, which are in fact aluminum siding, and acrylic stucco make the exterior virtually maintenancefree for the homeowner, and offer a hint of the interior design found within. The 11-foot ceiling of the home’s entryway is the first indication of this light and bright space. The tiled flooring sprawls out with enough room for a sitting bench and an extra large coat closet, complete with rolling door, before leading up to just a few steps into the main floor’s open areas. The first point of focus is undoubtedly the kitchen’s large island. The three-inch thick quartz counter with waterfall edges was supplied by Ital-Stone Design, adding to the volume and heft of the island, which offers up seating for three on one side, while the other houses soft-closing drawers and hidden appliances, like the dishwasher. The stove hood fan is also conveniently tucked away under the natural cabinetry that harkens back to the exterior wood tone.

The modern exterior features a mix of maintenance-free materials including charcoal brick, acrylic stucco, and aluminum siding that has the look of cedar planks.

The tri-coloured kitchen features clean-lined maple cabinetry, constructed and installed by Silverpine Cabinets, in white, charcoal, and a natural wood.

The thick quartz countertop with waterfall edge was supplied by Ital-Stone Design and ties the island to the kitchen’s back-splash, which also features the light coloured, but hefty stone.

This is just one of three hues (remember that design rule) in the kitchen, which also boasts clean-lined white cabinets surrounding the stunning quartz back-splash and stove, and matte charcoal grey cabinetry from Silverpine Cabinets that help the black stainless steel appliances to blend in. Just off the kitchen, an airy dining space features a bank of horizontal windows and fullglass door leading to the covered deck. Just like the exterior finishes, the deck, which features metal railings with glass inserts, is constructed from maintenance-free materials, including the cedar-look siding. Back inside, the great room’s unique halfvault ceiling soars up to 17 feet at its highest, boasting transom windows in the upper portion allowing light to filter through the entire main living space. Another trio of horizontal windows illuminates the area’s custom details. The linear electric fireplace is set inside a floorto-ceiling stone surround reminiscent of the charcoal bricks on the exterior, and is offset by the custom entertainment wall created from 24 by 12-inch custom wood panels which tie the natural colour from the kitchen into the space. The light, maple entertainment centre cabinetry features closed storage, while three custombuilt shelves offer an opportunity to display key pieces of décor.

Even before Schulz Construction Inc. was formed, Bartel Drywall worked with Peter and David Schulz on all their homes, and continues to do this important work in every one of the homebuilder’s current projects.

The rooms are tied together by the engineered hardwoods that flow throughout the main level, including the master suite, an airy space that continues to use light wood and colour palettes for a bright finish.

The master’s ensuite bathroom features an abundance of amenities to create a comfortable, warm atmosphere. The clean-lined, maple veneer vanity with dual sinks and mirrors matches the trio of large shelves, keeping the

And, when you step out of the custom glass shower with tile surround, your toes will be toasty warm, thanks to the in-floor heated tiles. The master suite is completed with a large walk-in closet featuring custom wood shelving and additional functional storage options. The main floor of the 1,485-squarefoot bungalow also includes another large bedroom and bathroom. The bathroom offers a tub surround, quartz counters, maple cabinetry, and a unique accent piece – hexagonal porcelain tiles alongside the mirror to match the flooring in the space – giving the light coloured room some depth and dimension.

The ensuite features a cool colour palette, heated flooring, and natural wood cabinets, constructed by Silverpine Cabinets.

There’s even more amenities to be had as you wind down the metal and glass staircase to the fully finished lower level. With eight-foot ceilings, the rooms feel vast but are warmed by the ultra-practical heated, coloured concrete floors, a signature Schulz Construction Inc. element. The open room is perfect for an entertainment and games area; a gathering space for the residents of the lower level’s two additional bedrooms. The space also features a three-piece bathroom that includes a five-foot, walk-in shower, and large, quartz-topped vanity. Constructing a home with this level of precision and quality workman-ship requires working with highly skilled tradespeople. Schulz Construction Inc. has forged strong working relationships with some of the best in their field, including Bartel Drywall, a company that participated in all their builds. This home, which has recently sold, truly solidifies Schulz Construction Inc. as a triplethreat builder. Their high level of construction, thoughtful floor plans, and one-of-a-kind elements visually show that the rule of three makes for better home design.

About the Builder Brothers Peter and David launched Schulz Construction Inc. in 2011, but the co-owners have decades of homebuilding experience between them. Their commitment to their customers is unwavering; they are often the first people on the construction site and the last ones off. That’s because Schulz Construction Inc. knows that building a home can be a daunting task, and they are there to walk with homeowners every step of the way.

“I like to meet people in person and will continue to work with them from start to finish. It doesn’t matter that I’m the owner of the company, I want to make sure they are comfortable with everything that’s happening and that they know I’m on site making sure everything they desire in their dream house is becoming reality,” states Peter. Schulz Construction Inc. is also committed to building original custom home designs. Peter states he draws inspiration from all sources – even Pinterest, which he says isn’t just for women – to create homes that pull from contemporary ideas but will always have a classic appeal. The company features many draft plans to customize or can work with clients to design their ideal home from scratch. And, of course, whatever design homeowners dream of, Schulz Construction Inc. can construct it with precision and quality workmanship. The company is committed to a higher level of construction, exceeding residential building codes, using the latest technology, thoughtful plans and design; energy efficiency and attention to function means they always do the best that they can for families. “Building a new home is one of the biggest investments a person will ever make, and that’s why it’s our goal to make it as stress-free and enjoyable as possible,” says Peter.

My wife and I were thrilled to see Daniel Raiskin, the WSO’s new Music Director gracing the cover of Style’s summer edition. We have enjoyed many musical performances by the WSO over the years under the baton of at least two previous directors, and are eager to see what Mr. Raiskin will bring to our 70-yearold orchestra. We are also delighted that he’s not afraid of Winnipeg’s sub-zero winter climate, and have heard rumours that he’s quite the hockey fan. Thank you for the great article!

The home featured on the cover of Style Manitoba’s Fall 2018 issue was super impressive! There are many great design details utilized in this remarkable home. I particularly loved the ‘writing on the wall’ by Winnipeg artist, Kal Barteski, along with other design anchoring points found throughout this spacious home – including the 10-foot island with its stunning engineered quartz countertop featuring deep white veins. All I can say is wow! Maric Homes truly did an outstanding job with this build.

It’s wonderful that Style Manitoba has managed to stay the course over the past 20-something years. I’m always happy to receive my copy in the mailbox. Publishing has never been an industry for the faint at heart, even more so since entering the current era of digital media. While many have ceased producing printed magazines, Style has managed to straddle both worlds with a robust presence online in addition to a healthy distribution of printed copies. Call me a purist, but I still find a well laid out printed magazine chockfull of good ideas, wonderful photography and interesting information far superior to anything one can find online. Please keep the printed copies coming!

What is your time worth?

I

nventor, scientist and diplomat Benjamin Franklin once said, “Lost time is never found again.” Genesis couldn’t agree more. Indeed, the automobile company has identified time as an important luxury and developed an attractive range of services designed to stop wasting this precious and very finite commodity. Genesis, the luxury division of the Hyundai Motor Company, launched the luxury car brand back in 2016. Today there are 21 agencies across Canada that offer three model tiers G70, G80 (+ a sport model) and the exquisite G90. Genesis automobiles offer standard premium comfort, convenience and safety features that other companies typically offer as options – if at all. Designs are highly intuitive, and the sales and ownership experience is uncharacteristic of industry norms and is typically focused on tailoring the experience to meet the high expectations of luxury brand buyers. It all starts with Genesis’ unique customer focused approach. Perhaps you’ve researched online, spoken to a few Genesis owners and now you are ready to get serious about a purchase decision. With Genesis, the days of showroom battles and purchase games with sales associates are over. At Genesis, they understand the value of time. Scheduling a product demonstration is as simple and convenient as placing a call to their Customer Care Line or booking online through their comprehensive website. Then your personal Genesis Experience Manager will have a Genesis model of your choice brought to your home or office for a presentation and test drive. After the test drive, when it comes time to purchase your Genesis, it’s as simple as

clicking a few boxes on their website to build a model of your choice including all accessories. Prices are one single, guaranteed price. Your new Genesis is then delivered directly to you at a time and place that is most convenient for you. There is no need to get into a cold car and fight traffic while you drive to a dealership, no haggling with anxious salespersons, and no disappointments. “The intention is to put the customer in control of the purchase experience at a time that is most convenient for them,” says Richard Eccleston, General Manager of Genesis Winnipeg, the Genesis agency operated by the award-winning Murray Automotive Group. “Genesis has created an automobile purchase experience like no other. It starts with the simple, transparent, all-inclusive price that includes an exceptional suite of ownership benefits. These benefits include five years complimentary scheduled maintenance with at-home or office concierge valet service and the use of a courtesy Genesis, along with five years comprehensive warranty and 24-hour roadside assistance. You can customize and reserve your Genesis model, get your tradein appraised, complete a credit application, schedule at-home delivery all online and in the comfort of your own home.”

B Y K E L LY G R A Y

For owners, Genesis at Home Concierge service is the next step in time saving convenience. Genesis has completely re-engineered the service experience for its owners by providing complimentary concierge ‘valet’ service for 5 years. Rather than driving to a dealership for a service appointment, Genesis owners, via the at-home concierge ‘valet’ service, can choose to have their automobile picked up at a location of their choice. Need a car while your Genesis is being pampered with regular servicing? A Genesis valet will drop off a complimentary Genesis courtesy vehicle when they pick up your vehicle. At Genesis they understand that people need their cars to go about their daily business. So, a loaner vehicle just seemed like a natural fit when developing programs to save people time. When the service is complete, the customer decides the best place to have their automobile brought back to them at, again another Genesis advantage that saves time and makes life a little simpler. Really, who has enough time? A true luxury brand recognizes that it must compete, not with empty material considerations, but with products and services that offer a higher level of meaningfulness. Certainly, with this in mind, Genesis’ service and products seek to save the most valuable luxury item of all – their customers’ time. “Genesis is a market disruptor,” says Eccleston. “We do things differently because luxury owners told us they wanted things this way.” Discover the advantages that come from owning a Genesis. innipeg gets an early Christmas present this year when the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra (WSO), under the baton of guest conductor Martin MacDonald, meets up with The Celtic Tenors for a slate of performances this December 14-16 at the Centennial Concert Hall. Christmas With the Celtic Tenors promises to ring in the season with the trio’s blend of traditional classics, pop standards and works from the Celtic songbook.

The Celtic Tenors have sold millions of recordings and perform upwards of 100 shows a year at locations all over the globe. These Winnipeg dates come at the end of the first part of a Canadian tour that has them packing houses from Halifax to Southern Ontario to Winnipeg. “There will be a little bit of everything for everyone,” says Omagh, Northern Ireland tenor Daryl Simpson, a well-lettered classically trained opera singer who was recently accorded a BEM (British Empire Medal) when Buckingham Palace announced the Queen’s 2018 New Year’s honours list for his work in community relations, and peace and reconciliation In Northern Ireland. “People can expect songs that cross the divide, from classic to opera and a few surprises in between. Our shows bring in all ages. We are

seeing three generations sitting in our audiences and this is something very rare today to find a show that covers so much ground,” he says. Tenor James Nelson adds that they will cover favourites such as the “Wexford Carol” and “Home for Christmas” as well as other tunes such as “Four Strong Winds”- the Ian Tyson penned Canadian classic. Nelson, a singer with some 50 operatic roles and a broad repertoire to his credit, describes himself as a lover of jazz and pop. “Our new album references artists such as Dolly Parton and Bob Dylan,” he says, mentioning that the group has recorded 12 discs over the years since they got together in 2000 and signed with EMI. “There is something very appealing about three male voices reaching up for that high note and finding it,” says James, who characterizes their sound as a blend of vibrato with big octane C’s and quiet moments. Matthew Gilsenan describes himself as the only typical Irish Catholic of the three. ‘Gilly’ is from the south in Kells in County Meath, and is dipped in the full bath of Irish tradition. “A lot of what happens at Christmas takes me right back to when I was just a kid and studying at the Convent of the Sisters of Mercy. In our shows we try to tap into the essence of Christmas and we like to do some of the songs

we grew up with. Yes, we will be doing “Oh, Holy Night” and “Silent Night” but we will look to other areas as well, and will go beyond Christmas.” He remarks that the performance can be very emotional. “But, it’s not saccharine. These songs run deep and there is much for people to feel. We see ourselves as a bridge for the audience and there is a very real emotional back and forth with this music that is so well known and loved.” Matthew mentions here that the show also offers a lot of good humour and lively banter, with the performers showing an easy working relationship on stage that puts audiences in a casual mood. “We’ve been together now for quite some time and we are very comfortable joking about on stage. We really take audiences on a journey that is both familiar and wondrous. We sing the songs that are in your heart and we let the music take audiences away to places like those of Christmas memories.” This December discover the soul of the season with The Celtic Tenors and their blend of Irish roots, classical training, and polished, magnificent music. Destination: Tasty The fall winds blew and the overcast skies suggested more cold rain. This was the backdrop to a night out at Passero / Corto at The Forks Market where the new fall/winter menu has just premiered. The new 25-item menu is replete with dishes that offer comfort in these chilly times. Passero / Corto is a 45-seat (a few more at the tasting bar) adult casual expression of master chef Scott Bagshaw. Bagshaw is well known for local Enoteca, a highly acclaimed small plate restaurant that is among Canada’s top tables. With Passero / Corto, the team has taken much from the style and temper of Enoteca and delivered it with high flair among the other assembled establishments that surround The Forks Market Hall. Meals at Passero / Corto are shared with dishes coming in small plate portion sizes. Here, amid the unique contemporary décor, it’s all about flavours and building on the last dish to a crescendo of ‘Wow!’ Certainly this was our experience. We started with an inspired spritely salad of tomatoes, citrus, plum and buffalo mozzarella with charred bread, basil and Calabrian vinaigrette that was an awesome set-up for the meal in total. The server informed us that the heirloom flavour-bomb tomatoes are from local Greenland Gardens, a supplier that remains in use till winter snows have the kitchen source from BC. Next, we turned to a roasted beet, crème fraiche, quinoa and grapefruit with fennel, beet crumble and dill salad that uses beets three ways, and discovered a dish that screams fall comfort. Presented in a dark grey large serving bowl, the beauty of deep purple veggies was a sight to consider before the delight of citrus and fennel flavours reached the palate.

Passero / Corto offers a wide slate of pasta and even accommodates those who seek gluten-free options. We ordered Gnocchetti - squash and pine nut with brown butter and cheddar - and were impressed with the balance of flavor, as well as the perfectly cooked pasta. The same was true for the vegetable dish we shared. We ordered fried Brussels sprouts, horseradish mascarpone and apple mostarda with hemp hearts, walnut and mint and were simply blown away by flavours that married all the way through each juicy sprout. For entrees, we chose the 24-hour short rib, roasted mushrooms, tallegio with shallot and jus, as well as the lobster, prawns and mussels with saffron, leek, baby potato and aioli. Of the two, the short rib was preferred at our table. A single taste laden cube of boneless perfection, the short rib could well have been the star attraction of the meal. However, like a great sports team, it’s not really about one player. The other dishes compounded their flavours into a tower of performance that had us smiling from behind our after dinner espresso. Great flavour, great atmosphere, great service.

How Clean is Your House?

TATTOOS

Does anyone remember a TV show called How Clean is Your House? with Kim Woodburn and Aggie MacKenzie? It was a BBC production and one of the first reality TV shows. Every episode featured a family who wanted or needed help with household cleaning, organizing, and maintenance. The conditions of the homes were usually severe, and there was always a family story to explain. Kim and Aggie were a huge source of great information about tips and procedures for cleaning and maintaining a home. The most compelling part of each episode was comparing the before and after.

Forbidden from any kind of action by the men in their society, they must sort out what they must do, making for a powerful story full of anger, defiance, and humanity.

Mamaskatch (named for the Cree word used as a response to dreams shared) is a heart-breaking and heart-warming memoir of family stories, residential schools, abuse, alcohol, and growing up in the aftermath of trauma. Honest and thought provoking, it’s a story of the smells of moose stew and wild peppermint tea, deep love of the landscape, and overcoming personal and societal obstacles. DAVID BOWIE Welcome to the Blackout (Live London ’78) (Parlophone/Universal) The posthumous David Bowie industry continues, mainly through pricy box sets (currently, the only way to get live recordings from the Serious Moonlight and Glass Spider tours, which reached Winnipeg). Welcome to the Blackout, released as a stand-alone doubledisc set, makes a lighter demand on the mortgage money, but is also a specialist item, being essentially a mirror of Stage (still available) from the same era. It was a strange time of uneven compromise, when performing the terse songs and abstract instrumentals from the Low and Heroes albums meant pulling out older live favourites as well from as far back as his Ziggy Stardust days. Depending on personal taste, the fast-forward button will come in handy for the brooding synthetic strings of “Warszawa” or the bar room rock of “Suffragette City.” But “Station to Station,” supercharged by Adrian Belew’s wild guitar and Roger Powell’s locomotive synthesizer, could unite both teams.

VAN DER GRAAF GENERATOR Do Not Disturb (Esoteric/Antenna) (Import) This is where progressive rock can go after 50 years. Van der Graaf Generator continues as a trio, and though David Jackson’s commanding saxophones are missed, Hugh Banton (keyboards, bass guitar), Guy Evans (drums) and leader Peter Hammill have honed a tough, inarguable sound, old-fashioned and yet current, where the trickiest passages are harnessed to Hammill’s astute song writing (“So now I’m in a parlous place/Repenting at leisure for what I did in haste”). At 70, Hammill has earned his nostalgia, but he’s not going gently anywhere. “Alfa Berlina” – not a car ad – has a whiff of that, but the music hammers. Sometimes, indeed, the music is surprisingly heavy, but sudden shifts in texture and temperature abound, with hard rock cooling to something close to jazz. Banton’s organ mastery is stirring in this age of digital keyboards, and he surprises further with his turn on accordion for the cinematic instrumental, “Shigata Ga Nai.”

PACO DE LUCIA Five Original Albums (Mercury/Universal) There was always more feel than flash to the late flamenco guitarist Paco de Lucia, though he was never short on the flash. This budget-priced set encloses five astounding albums from the ‘70s and would be a bargain for his tribute to Manuel de Falla alone, with a sizzling take on “Ritual Fire Dance” accelerated by flute and percussion. A live album from 1975 is equally stunning, while the Almoraima album, cut one year later, is a masterclass in pacing, with “Llanos Del Real” a graceful close after several breathtaking performances. A detailed booklet would go nicely with the miniature LP sleeves, but at the retail price of a single CD, this is irresistible. (Universal has stoked temptation by drawing on its Verve and Blue Note riches for similar packets, including a superb Herbie Hancock collection.)

Winter

Get ready, get set, BRRRRR! Are you ready for the icy cold, bundled in layers type of weather? This chilly WINTER-peg inspired look was created by Suzy Sacramento (@hairdidbysuzy) for those blonde beauties who are snow bunnies at heart. The process to achieving this icy blonde begins with a full head of highlights and a technique that involves backcombing and hand painting to create an even blend. Once the hair is lifted to a pale yellow, the toning process begins, which includes two different tones applied to the root and one for the ends. To complete the final look, Suzy used a 1Âź-inch curling iron to create a simple tousled wave. Be sure to call the salon soon for appointments this holiday season. Goo Goo Gaga! Lady Gaga inspired, Stephanie’s dark blonde hair has been pre-lightened to the maximum lightness; then toned with a super silver white. Next, her hair was blown out without volume and flat ironed for a smooth finish. Then a dry cut was executed to achieve this simple blunt, edgy, geometric style. Simply sophisticated and sleek. Head Turning Style Courtney Anderson gave her model a totally new look with this head turning style. Using classic barbering techniques to create this modernized men’s pompadour, and pairing it with a medium tapered fade, she took her client to a whole new level. Adding a little colour with the hottest men’s salon trend - the “brolayage” - she gave Brad a dimensional new look that helps brighten up his face and eyes. Finished off with some straight blade detailing, Brad’s new, nicely kept coif enhances his facial structure. Men’s colour is the most underrated, upcoming service in the industry today. Back in the ‘90s, frosted tips and chunky highlights were all the fad. But today, colour has taken a turn toward a softer, more seamless look - not just for women, but for men as well. Whether to blend, reduce or cover grey hair, or to add fullness, dimension and shine, there’s a place for colouring in every man’s grooming regimen. WELCOME TO THE NEW SINGLETONS The family-owned and operated salon Singletons Hair Care opened their first salon in Winnipeg 37 years ago and have since expanded to 10 salons across the city. resh out of university, Megan McGhie had plans to take her Bachelor’s degree in Clothing and Textiles from the U of M and move to Paris, learn French, and then return to Canada to work in Quebec’s alluring fashion industry. Instead of turning heads in the fashion world, McGhie, the general manager of Singletons Hair Care, is leading a major makeover in the hairstyling biz. And when the Winnipeg-born business owner is done transforming the salon, customers won’t recognize the new Singletons. So it would appear that everything really does happen for a reason, she says. “I saw so much potential in the business,” says McGhie, who started doing payroll in the family-owned business more than 10 years ago. “I think customers are going to be surprised. We still offer incredible value, and you will have an amazing experience.” The perfect mix of business savvy and style (with perfect hair, obviously!), McGhie is the mastermind behind the “reimagining” of the 37-year-old family business; transitioning it from a quick-service shop to a full-service salon, comparable to trendy salons. She co-owns Singletons with her brother, Tyler McGhie, who focuses on the finances. Their grandfather, Adelbert George Singleton McGhie (aka “Kit”), started Singletons in 1981, and although he’s no longer around to see how far his grandchildren have taken the business, there’s no doubt he’d be impressed. Walking through the new flagship location at 139 Market Avenue, which is also the 13th location in Canada, it’s obvious this is no longer McGhie’s grandfather’s salon – it’s spacious, welcoming and chic. She proudly talks about the company’s history as one of the only familyowned salons that’s been in business for multiple generations, and where she hopes to take it. Selecting a spot in Winnipeg’s Exchange District was a very strategic move on their part that sets the tone for what customers can come to expect from the “new” Singletons; it’s a fresh, fashion-forward take on nearly four decades of experience in the industry. It’s a dramatic transformation, but the purpose is simple: to help others feel good about themselves by providing a great experience, the Singletons Way. “In the past, whenever a customer would come in, the stylist would say ‘Oh, just a haircut today?’ and it was never just a haircut,” says McGhie. “A haircut is just a fraction of the experience. A good haircut can transform someone’s day; it can give them the confidence to ask that girl out or raise their hand in class. A good hair day can change someone’s perspective, their mood and have an effect on other people,” she adds.

Major Makeover in the Hairstyling Biz BY AILEEN GOOS-BERARD

“It’s really important to us to build trust and build relationships with our customers, and that starts with empowering our staff and making sure this is a positive environment for them,” notes McGhie. Leaning on her vast retail experience, McGhie wants to provide staff with not just the technical skills, but also the soft skills needed to expand their career. The Market Avenue location is large enough to host professional development events, not just for Singletons staff, but also for any stylists looking to grow and learn new skills. “In Winnipeg, we tend to get passed over and don’t get the big industry events that larger cities do,” she says. “With this new location, we have the space to host events. I want to support stylists to achieve higher levels of success and create a place where stylists want to make a career.”

That includes personal coaching and encouraging stylists to set and achieve their own performance goals so they have control over their own careers. In the long run, McGhie even aspires to open a school that provides more opportunities for stylists who want to be successful in the industry. But for now, the goal is to focus on transitioning the other locations (ten in Winnipeg and two in Edmonton) to create the same experience as the Market Avenue salon, all while building positive customer experiences. “I hope customers feel positive, more positive than when they walked in,” says McGhie. “I hope they find increased confidence, and inspiration to take on a challenge. Because it’s never JUST a haircut!”

The Perfect Touch By Aileen Goos-Berard Photography: Michael Roberts Walking through the large glass doors of Grace and Company on Academy is a shopping experience like no other in Winnipeg. Visitors are immediately greeted with the peaceful aroma of milk-room spray procured from France, alongside tastefully appointed spaces featuring specialty products from around the world. Whether it’s the beautiful paintings created by local artists or the equally eye-pleasing displays of items impeccably curated from Milan, Paris or Barcelona, Grace and Company is reminiscent of quaint shoppes in Europe and Montreal. It was the vision of owner Dorota (Dorothy) Vannan, whose love for entertaining and attention to detail and style is evident in every item she’s selected for the boutique. “When people come here, I want them to feel welcome,” she says. “I pour my heart into this business. Everything in here is something we love.” Grace and Company was named after Vannan’s daughter and her grandmother who share the middle name Grace, but could easily describe the experience in the shop itself – it has all the grace and sophistication discerning shoppers are looking for without the pomp and circumstance that might be intimidating for some. There’s a diverse range of products, from inexpensive yet charming hostess gifts like Paviot napkins and edible treats like hand-crafted bitters and small-batch candies made in British Columbia to treasures for discerning bridesto-be, including pewter trays and champagne buckets handmade in Italy. Visitors will find an eclectic mix of tasteful goods, including tableware, décor, toys, bath and body products, and high-end laundry

accessories. There’s also the meticulously chosen line of Grace & Co. products, including placemats, tea towels and dishcloths, which are locally designed and produced. For little ones, there are truly adorable baby gifts and toys from France, cloth dolls, sewing sets or baking sets, as well as organic baby blankets. Shoppers looking for a little something for themselves will enjoy luxurious candles, soaps, and lotions made in France, and The Laundress cleaning products from New York. Repeat customers will find something new with every visit – products are always changing because Vannan plans at least one shopping trip each year. She’s already planning her next buying trip to New York and Paris, France in the New Year. The staff delight in helping people find the right gift, especially through a unique concierge service for local professionals who are looking to send clients something more meaningful and long lasting. It’s gift-giving made easy: Vannan works with the client, selects gifts for each recipient on the list based on the occasion, and sends pictures of the items to her clients before delivering them to the grateful recipients.

“One client we work with told me he never used to get calls from clients thanking him before, but since we’ve been working with him, his clients tell him how much they appreciate it and refer him to their friends and family,” says Vannan. Grace and Company staff are also incredibly experienced in assisting with bridal or baby registries. And for those who like to handpick their gifts for friends and family, the boutique is open for private shopping parties, which is an experience in and of itself. Groups of six or more can have the shop to themselves and snack on appetizers (supplied by Grace and Company) and shop to their hearts’ content. Vannan and her staff also host workshops to help customers make the most of their pieces, as well as partner with other local shop owners. It’s all about service and detail – from unique items to free gift-wrapping with purchases, everything at Grace and Company creates the perfect touch. “This is a lifestyle concept boutique,” says Vannan. “We have everything you need for curating a graceful life.” Follow Grace and Company on Instagram (graceandcompanyltd) for all the latest finds and information about workshops and special events.

uilder R&B Homes’ new midblock project on Queenston St. in Winnipeg’s River Heights community exemplifies the quality of upscale infill, where new home clients get all the benefits of an insightful modern design as well as the traditions and qualities of a long established neighbourhood. Nadi Design, an award-winning landscape architecture, urban design and planning consultancy selected R&B Homes to custom build this spectacular residence. According to Winnipeg-based architect Emeka Nnadi, principal of Nadi Design, the six-bedroom, four-bath Queenston St. property is one where a number of influences came together. “We resisted the urge to create an ultra modern design. Rather, we sought to create a design that worked with the elements of the other homes in the area while achieving the needs of the client,” says Emeka. He remarks that the design is one where modern meets traditional. For example, Nadi Design went with a more

standard pitched roofline rather a flat roof. They also utilized lap wood siding that is more in keeping with the existing neighbourhood homes. “I looked to the beauty and symmetry of Frank Lloyd Wright’s prairie style architecture and utilized a playfulness in how the boxes and forms work with one another,” he says, mentioning the large roof overhangs that are typical of Wright’s designs. “We had to learn about the family and their requirements. They have young boys and so we made a design with lots of open space for active living. We also noticed our clients were quite tall, so we planned for counters to be slightly higher to make the kitchen a more comfortable work environment. Ceiling heights are also higher. There is a lot of vertical volume in this home.” The features of this property are numerous. For example, there is a wealth of storage options. Indeed, more than $100,000 in custom cabinetry and storage solutions went into the build. Not only does the lower basement level feature two guest rooms, an office, a mechanical room and a three-piece bath, there is also ample storage for a growing family.

The colour palette is calming and materials such as the Tyndall-stone fireplace offer visual warmth. “This is not a ‘spec’ house. This house is designed and built specifically for this family of five,” says Emeka. “This project is the result of two and half years of back and forth with the client to achieve this beautiful design. Infill projects can be a challenge, but together, Nadi Design and builder R&B Homes were able to create a residence that is upscale and very liveable.“

On the second floor, the master bedroom features a massive walk-in closet that juts out beyond the house to maximize the space consideration. Other key features include a breathtaking spa-like ensuite, a commercial grade kitchen built to maximize both day-today living and entertainment options, insulated concrete form foundation walls and very deep pile pinning to set the house on solid ground. Designed to be Neighbourly for All Seasons From the very beginning, the goal for Bridgwater has been to capture the sense of a community where everybody knows one another; an old-fashioned small town nestled within a larger city. As Bridgwater has evolved, that design is becoming a reality for family after family to create a feeling of belonging. And that sense of belonging is what really makes Bridgwater unique. As much as Bridgwater is designed to feel like a community, it’s the friends and family who live there who truly make you feel like a neighbour. Neighbourhood associations are constantly planning family-friendly events from toddler soccer to community garage sales to family fun days – all in addition to the many play structures and green areas throughout the entire community. Bridgwater is indeed designed to be neighbourly, but it’s the people who make that design come alive – and, make it a great place to live. You can explore the neighbourhoods of Bridgwater at bridgwateneighbourhoods.com.

Now’s your chance to live in a community designed to make life easier. Take a look!

Bridgwater is literally a place where people wave back when you say hello, and getting to know your neighbours just feels natural.

StreetSide townhomes satisfy a lock and leave lifestyle

K

nown as an area “designed to be neighbourly,” Bridgwater continues to explode in popularity after a recent announcement of two new schools and a $30 million recreation campus scheduled for construction. With this in mind, StreetSide Development Corporation has taken the initiative to build a new housing option for resident hopefuls with its latest townhome development, 325 Park East Townhomes.

Now pre-selling with construction well underway, StreetSide’s latest 120-unit townhome development has seen an impressive response from buyers. Located at the corner of Centre Street and Park East Drive, the development will be constructed in four phases, the first phase (building 100) starting with 36 units with varying 1, 2 and 3 bedroom floor plan options. “Now more than ever, buyers are looking for a low maintenance lifestyle so they can enjoy life outside of their home,” says Margaux Braund, marketing co-ordinator for StreetSide. “Townhomes are an excellent option for those who want the space of a single home, but are also hoping for the lock and leave lifestyle that a common building space can provide.”

The lock and leave lifestyle trend is very popular among retired couples downsizing, students spending long periods of time away from home, and also for young professionals who embrace remote work or who prioritize travel and experiences. For all age groups, lock and leave living still allows for the comfort of a home to return to after they return from their adventures.

Ranging from 686 to 1,262 square feet, every square foot of 325 Park East has been carefully considered. Featuring eye-catching architecture, elegant interiors and spacious floor plans, there are five different layouts to choose from, including a very affordable garden level suite, two Midtown floor plans, and also the Uptown plan, which offers two floors of living space.

With a prime location in the heart of Bridgwater’s Town Centre, close to all the shops and services, and in close proximity to the soon to be constructed Altea Active Club recreation facility and schools, 325 Park East has become a very popular option for city newcomers, downsizers and first time homebuyers.

325 Park East’s interiors will be outfitted with designer finishes to impress at every step. The townhomes have fresh and airy kitchens that include custom designed cabinets with under cabinet lighting, quartz kitchen countertops, and black stainless steel kitchen appliances. StreetSide Developments, a Qualico company, is a well-trusted condo builder with decades of experience delivering high quality homes in sought after neighbourhoods across Winnipeg. Each community offers its own unique lifestyle, and 325 Park East is no exception. With an attractive pre-sale price point starting at under $200,000, StreetSide has seen a lot of interest from buyers looking to get into this highly sought-after area. Phase 1 of 325 Park East is already 50% sold out with first possessions set for December 2018. To learn more about this exciting development, visit 325parkeast.ca. WINTER 2018 | STYLE MANITOBA | 43

MAGNIFICENT INSIDE AND OUT It’s hard to decide what impresses most about 390 on the River. Is it the awe-inspiring views of the Assiniboine and the city skyline? Or is it the sophisticated interiors, infused with an uncommon degree of upscale style? Either way, one thing is certain: This new luxury condominium at 390 Assiniboine Avenue is sure to impress, from the moment one steps into the lobby. Every detail sets a new standard for the downtown condominium market – from the gourmet kitchens to the cast-in-place concrete construction. With the display suites now completed, the new building is ready to welcome visitors in all its finery.

K say Design Centre was chosen to furnish the three display suites in a range of stylings, from contemporary to transitional. As an added bonus, K say’s specialists will meet with purchasers at no charge to discuss how each space can be adapted to the new owner’s personal design aesthetic.

“It’s unlike anything else in Winnipeg, and now that people are able to see the finished product, they will be blown away by the quality,” – Viktoria Fazekas, Dubienski-Fazekas Group

“We know that many purchasers will be moving into a condominium for the first time, and they’ll have many questions about interior design,” says Michael Dubienski, one of the realtors marketing 390 on the River. “Cindy Guberman and her team at K say can help them envision an unlimited range of possibilities, with the added advantage of knowing what works with these floor plans.” Also ready for viewing is the stunning entertainment area, which includes a 2,364-square foot terrace overlooking the river, and a lounge and dining room with fully equipped kitchen. “This is not the typical ‘party room’ we so often see in other condominiums,” says Viktoria Fazekas, the other half of the marketing team. “One of my favourite touches is the blue tile surrounding the fireplace. It’s a real show-stopper. Anyone would be proud to entertain here.” Suites in the building range from 680 to 1,783 square feet – some with hard-to-find features like oversized terraces and Thermador appliances. The building also has four penthouse spaces measuring 2,098 or 2,295 square feet, waiting to be custom-finished to their new owners’ specifications.

For those looking for something truly unique, the two top floor units can be combined into one sensational 4,393-square-foot suite. As attractive as the building is inside, it’s hard not to be mesmerized by the panorama outside. The River Walk is right next door, and to the west, the Golden Boy holds his torch aloft. At night, the city lights sparkle. “There is plenty of great entertainment nearby,” says Michael. “But the most spectacular show in town is right here.”

uxury lifestyle in Winnipeg’s Tuxedo Point neighborhood is now within reach, with the launch of LXTX, a new apartment residence rising just off Sterling Lyon Parkway. Located across the street from Fort Whyte Nature Centre and just beside The Seasons of Tuxedo Collections outlet mall, LXTX is the latest project being marketed by Your Next Place, a Winnipeg-based leader in apartment rentals whose concept is a curated approach to luxury residences, and whose professionalism aligns with the quality of the apartments they market. “This property offers an elevated apartment lifestyle, thanks to the experience we obtained from the development of the neighbouring property, The Spot at Tuxedo Point,” says William Rossall, Director, Your Next Place. He reports that the amenity package at The Spot really ‘hit it out of the park’ but they have been able to achieve an even higher standard at LXTX by listening to feedback from renters and leaving no trend stone unturned.

designers looked to luxury vinyl plank flooring to further complement the aesthetic. More, the building offers the services of a dedicated concierge, a nice feature when time constraints make restaurant reservations a challenge or there is an important FedEx parcel to be received. “The concierge service helps to take some of the bumps out of the road for people with busy lifestyles. This is a unique offering in Winnipeg, and one which adds significant value for our residents,” Rossall notes. He adds that the building also offers underground heated parking with car and dog wash facilities.

urtis Carpets has been tops in floors for more than 30 years. Located at 1280 Pembina Highway in south Winnipeg, the showroom and service centre continues to be the go-to place for carpet, hardwoods, luxury vinyl and a wealth of other products such as ceramic tiles. The company is a full service operation that offers complete installation and design advice that have earned them the trust of Winnipeggers who have looked to Curtis Carpets as a one-stop flooring shop. According to Francine Curtis, trends come and go, but their level of service and commitment to customers has remained a foundation of their success since opening day in 1980. And today, Curtis Carpets is still focused on leading trends that deliver style and performance to both the new home and renovation markets. Francine reports that there is always a lot of flux in the flooring trade with new styles and materials making a play for the public’s attention. “Right now we are seeing a lot of interest in luxury vinyl plank (LVP) options,” she says, adding that vinyl flooring has undergone considerable change over the years. She

suggests that today luxury vinyl or SPC vinyl flooring is the new market leader. “It’s more durable, water resistant and offers a very visually appealing look. Popular colours now are moving back into the natural palette with wood looks such as white oak and distressed finishes,” she says, mentioning Shaw’s Floorte Pro series as a good example. Floorte uses high-definition printing for a hardwood or tile look that is highly authentic.

It comes as no surprise that Curtis Carpets is also the place for … carpets. Here, Francine notes that products such as LVT have taken away some of the momentum from the carpet side of the trade. “Carpet is still number one in flooring, but there have been many changes over the years.

“Floorte’s waterproof qualities make it ideal for high-moisture areas like basements, bathrooms, and mudrooms,” she notes. While luxury vinyl tile (LVT) flooring is superb, it is a bit softer and more pliable than SPC. This means some locations, such as those where heavy furniture or appliances are positioned, might not be ideal for this flooring choice. Francine points out that this is why it’s so important to have a local firm you can trust. “Curtis Carpets is the place for advice on the right floor solution for your home and lifestyle. We advise, we sell, we install and we stand behind every job and sale.”

WINTER 2018 | STYLE MANITOBA | 51

For example, berbers are not as popular as they once were. Today, we are seeing patterns making a comeback in warm neutral colours. Residentially, we are seeing a greater use of carpet tile, something that was once only popular on the high-end commercial side of things,” she remarks. “Materials such as polypropylene, nylon, and olefin have all undergone tremendous changes in the manufacturing process and deliver better carpet product today than in the past. Buyers have noticed the quality and the environmental benefits of recycled materials in carpet construction. The result is greater confidence,” Francine explains, pointing to Shaw’s Tuftex line. “With many styles to choose from and the best stain-fighting technology in the industry, Shaw carpets such as Tuftex offer a range of texture, loop, pattern and twist options, as well as delivering colour and value to the equation.” Another key trend that is coming forward currently is the large format ceramic tile. “At one time, floor tiles were a standard 12-inch by 12-inch format. Not any longer. Now, we are seeing a huge demand for 24-inch by 24-inch tiles. These offer minimum grout lines and create a strong clean appearance in designs,” she says. According to Francine, orders for marble-look large formats have been growing. “These offer the great appearance of marble without the porous characteristics. They are very realistic.” She suggests that the larger tiles can be tricky to install and often require a skilled hand to get jobs just right. “The substrate has be very level to accommodate the larger surface area of the tiles. We are fortunate to have a group of installers and suppliers that are among the most respected tradespeople in the city. This includes local firms like Ames Tile & Stone, a company that has worked with us for a long time. They make sure we get the very latest in products. This is one reason we have never backed away from a guarantee on our workmanship. Our guys take a lot of pride in every job they do and we back it up with our commitment to each customer,” she says inviting people to drop by the showroom to discover how easy great floors can be. KITCHEN &BATH

Focal Points BY CARLY PETERS

hether you’re entertaining guests or having a family night, everyone inevitably ends up gathering in the kitchen. With this space often being the hub of the home, it needs to stand out aesthetically and functionally. In the case of this award-winning showhome built by Parkhill Homes, the 280-square-foot kitchen certainly does just that. The vast space opens up to the living room and dining area, and serves as an anchor, bringing all the rooms together. The home’s overall dark / light concept is also flowed into the kitchen with Kitchen Craft’s Summit door style in Maple Alabaster (white) combined with Maple Charcoal accents. The cabinetry hardware features an Antique Nickel finish, bringing the charcoal tone into the details throughout.

The obvious gathering place is the kitchen’s eight-by-four-foot island, which features an extended eating bar. A secondary point would be the custom designed side bar area, which is given a moody depth and interest by the open shelving and patterned backsplash.

Kitchen Craft creates expressions for every lifestyle. Learn more about how Kitchen Craft can create a focal point in your home with their latest door styles, cabinet colours, and organizational accessories at this year’s Winnipeg Renovation Show.

While not as overt as the aesthetics, the functional elements are equally as important. The kitchen features ample drawer space with soft close slides, while the cabinet doors boast soft close hinges. For a bit of a contemporary twist, double bi-fold cabinets flank the oven range hood, providing an option for taller storage.

Or visit Kitchen Craft’s website to test out their free Planning Guide to help you kick off your next kitchen, bathroom, home office, or laundry room project. With information on organization solutions, budget assistance and more, the Planning Guide is chock-full of tips and tricks to lead to a smooth and successful new build or renovation.

Modern Contemporary Lighting

End of the Spectrum What side are you on? This season’s lighting is all about polar opposites. Where once transitional pieces brought together the contemporary and classic, current fixtures are choosing to go far right into formal, or the opposite end to modern.

This Artcraft fixture is a good example of lighting that leans further off transitional to a more traditional look. The company’s Harmony Collection features a mix of black and satin brass finishes, along with multiple pendent sizes for different areas of the home. This look is also keeping in line with the current trend of “dressing up” casual spaces and open floor plans, particularly in home layouts that do not have formal dining rooms. On the other side of the spectrum are highly contemporary pieces that border on ultra-modern. Think exposed bulbs, varied shapes, muted finishes, and swirling LED constructs. One finish that transcends all styles is black, which is particularly hot for bathroom lighting fixtures. For fixtures in other areas of the home, black is also being paired with satin brass, satin nickel, or polished chrome for depth. However, soft gold is coming up quickly behind this distinct finish to possibly become next season’s favourite metal. Whether you’re on the formal side, or like it a little more modern, Super-Lite’s showroom offers a wide variety of shapes, models, metals, and finishes to put your space on the right side of the spectrum.

Moving Glass Walls for Seamless Indoor Outdoor Spaces Folding, Sliding & Swinging Door Solutions BY AL DUECK & AYNSLEY DUECK Add a touch of luxury to your space with a movable glass wall that connects the interior to the exterior of your home. Although this concept was born and bred for milder climates, technology and market demand have now made the vision possible in our northern climate. Imagine how the functionality of a room changes when you can open it up to the outdoors with a wide clear opening. Applications range from renovations with some new framing, to custom new homes with full design flexibility. What type of door would suit your project? Following are several options: FOLDING DOORS Folding doors are stackable panels that collapse over to one side of the opening. Often they involve one active door that is used for regular entry / exit, without having to open the entire wall. They are easily sized for any opening and have a remarkable capability to create very large clear openings (9 feet, 12 feet, and larger!). Folding doors typically require an engineering analysis to install a beam to specifications to carry the weight of the panels. Although well designed for the colder climates, there are still some realities that the doors will not seal as well as some other alternatives, and that finding an oversized insect screen also needs to be considered. SLIDING DOORS Sliding doors are simply that – glass panels that slide out of the way. These doors can be very effectively designed for cold climates, with true triple-pane argon low-E glass. Heavy-duty wheels and fiberglass frames allow for larger panels of glass and unobstructed views. We often see Bi-Parting Sliding Doors, typically meaning four panels, with the middle two sliding

away from each other to create the opening. Take advantage of the beautiful height, up to 9 feet tall, with today’s high ceilings. These newer sliding door designs also offer a more contemporary range of handles. SWINGING DOORS Often placed in more traditional designs, or modern designs with grid patterns, swinging doors offer great style and good performance. Typically in a Double Door format, the doors open with no post in between, and you can achieve a 6 to 7-foot clear opening. Alternatively, homeowners can select multiple panels, 3 up to 6, to show off a wider view to the outdoors. Visit Duxton Windows & Doors at the Winnipeg Renovation Show, where professionals will be on hand with expert advice on a wide range of their latest products and innovations.

Art of Imitation Hard surfaces are never truly as they seem. Whether it’s a vinyl plank in a wood grain pattern, or porcelain tile that mimics marble, the look can suit the design while the function suits your purpose. Consider this bathroom, designed by Everitt Design Associates Limited, which utilizes Neolith Calacatta tiles on the walls. While they may look like over-sized marble slabs they are in fact porcelain tiles. Unlike marble, Neolith’s porcelain slabs are stain resistant, versatile, and require less maintenance, making it a good solution for those who want the look of the natural stone but don’t want the work. Neolith is exclusive to Carrara Tile & Marble Ltd. in Manitoba. This third generation family business is passionate about the industry and offer series that are exclusive in order to differentiate themselves from the other flooring stores. The company also stands out with their counter options. With the ability to fabricate marble, granite, and quartz countertops inhouse, Carrara can create options to suit any space and style.

If you’re looking for something specific and Carrara doesn’t have it, they can get it. With over 30 years in the industry, they have relationships with suppliers and factories around the world.

Largest in the Land With Springfield Woodworking being one of the largest cabinet manufacturers in the province, and the third largest supplier, you’d assume with that volume their work would be cookie-cutter; made to fit any home. But that is far from the case. Springfield Woodworking custom measures every kitchen, and all cabinets are made to size to fit your space perfectly up to 1/16 of an inch. Combine that with the best durable UV finish in the industry and the ability to bring some innovative counter options to customers, and you can see why their reach is so vast. The company’s work spans urban to rural projects. In this case, it was a total cottage kitchen renovation. Taking a twist on vintage chic, the knotty alder cabinets feature a specialty milky green paint distressed finish, done with special tools to make the doors appear antiqued. The doors were sanded through the paint on the edges, exposing portions of raw wood to further enhance the antique look, then top-coated to preserve the finished final appearance of the door. The chalkboard finish on the side panel of the tall pantry cabinet adds flair, trend and functionality to meet the homeowners’ lifestyle. By now everyone has heard the virtues of installing vinyl flooring – it can look like real hardwoods, but it’s soft under foot, is water resistant and can be installed anywhere in the home. And now, what’s making it even better is the new trend toward stone plastic composite (SPC) rigid vinyl flooring. SPC flooring offers the same great benefits of standard vinyl options, but has an increased durability against dent impact and can handle extreme temperature changes, making it a great option for unheated cottages or seasonal homes which deal with freeze / thaw cycles. In fact, the line of SPCs at Ken’s Carpets & Urban Home Style Centre is warrantied up to -30 degree weather. Even with such durability, SPC planks are easy to install – no glue, just cut and click into place. And though vinyl is a warmer option than hardwood, when winter comes, it’s still nice to sink your toes into something a little softer and cozier. Ken’s Carpets & Urban Home Style Centre has many new five-by-nine foot area rugs to choose from, or customize your style and size with the store’s wide selection of soft fibre broadloom pattern carpets, which can be

In the Mix

ou’re not one thing, so why should your furniture be? Ashley HomeStore’s Urbanology lifestyle lets homeowners mix up their style. Whether it’s contemporary, industrial or eclectic, your home can be just as dynamic as you are.

The Baylow bedroom features options for ample storage, including a bachelor chest with a large door for mixed storage opportunities, a smooth-gliding six-drawer dresser, and a two-drawer nightstand that hosts an AC power supply with two USB charging outlets.

The Baylow bedroom and dining room collection is the perfect example of pulling design spectrums together. With a blend of Acacia wood solids in a distressed black finish, the entire collection displays a raw and edgy look. But the design - like the square stock legs - reflects a casual farmhouse style. The hardware - an architectural bar pull with an antiqued zinc colour finish - is almost excessive, yet simple.

“I think what’s most special about this series is the depth of the colour and it’s clean palette that can really accommodate any living space,” explains Leanne Ryan, manager of merchandising for Ashley HomeStore. “The wood looks raw but it’s finished so well that it’s smooth to the touch.”

The look, feel, and construction of the Baylow collection can also be flowed into the dining room. Featuring the same distressed black finish and clean lines, the set includes additional pieces, such as a six-drawer storage table, and a server with drawer storage, open shelving, and crate front drawers. Ashley HomeStore offers a wide variety of chair styles and upholstered options to swap into the set for those who’d like to explore an eclectic style. See how you can mix it up with the Baylow series this season at Ashley HomeStore.

The standard headboard for the collection features a wood planked look, but customers also have the option of mixing and matching. Offering versatility with its neutral finish, the Baylow pairs well with upholstered headboards from various other collections.

Functional Art BY CARLY PETERS

our imagination is your only limit when it comes to lightning design. With LED sources being so small and flexible, fixture designers have almost limitless boundaries to create pieces that not just illuminate a space but also create bold, sculptural artistic installations. These examples shown from Blackjack Lighting perfectly express the idea of functional art. Featuring either a linear or square modular system, the Seraph line can be customized for small or large installations that fill a volume while visually enhancing a space. Comprised of two, three, or four Seraph Square or Linear modules, each set featured comes in polished chrome and matte black with all necessary hardware for modular installation. The adjustable 12-foot cords on each pendent also allow for customizable hanging schemes, adding even more dimension to the fixtures. Try a flat lay, stepped layout, pyramid theme, or even a bow shape to create depth and play on light.

Alison Demare, Branch Manager for Robinson Lighting Ltd., suggests homeowners looking to create a large installation enlist the help of a lighting designer to ensure both a well-lit interior, as well as a designed space that evokes the right mood. “When you are planning out pieces like this there are lots of things to consider but scale would be the most important. Don’t just consider how it looks when viewing a set of floor plans consider it within the three dimensional space, think of the site lines within the space and the views outside, and also the scale in the room itself and the activities that are going on in that space,” she states. Demare adds that in a residential project, it would probably be best to place such statement pieces in feature locations like a dining room, foyer, or great room.
