At Huntington Homes, the objective with every home they build is the same: to create an exciting, functional masterpiece. As is the case with every masterpiece – in this instance, their showhome at 130 Lake Bend Road in Bridgwater Lakes – nothing about the design is an accident. From start to finish, the design of the home is ultra-specific from the floor plan to the finishes – a Huntington standard. “When people tour our showhome, you can see their excitement about the functional layout and cutting-edge elements of style. The comment we hear all the time is, ‘I wouldn’t change a thing,’” says Rob Swan. “It’s very rewarding to hear that, as this home is a product of years of research, experience and consumer feedback. It’s a Gold Medal Winner that has been meticulously crafted down to the smallest detail.” This stunning yet practical home is a product of Huntington’s three-part design / building system, one that’s without peer in the homebuilding industry. “First, the unique features, fabulous layout and Huntington’s superior building specifications combine to result in an extraordinary home that will eliminate typical problems that occur as a result of the extremes of Winnipeg’s weather conditions,” Swan explains. “Secondly, we’ve developed design and building systems that guide our clients through the building experience in a positive, rewarding fashion. Our goal is to make the building experience fun, while keeping it on time and on budget.” The third dimension – which is actually the starting point – is leading-edge technology using highly-advanced CAD (Computer Aided Design software) which incorporates CAD libraries containing hundreds of design ideas and features, allowing clients to visualize designs and features that best suit their lifestyles and needs. Many of the latest ideas are showcased in Huntington’s latest showhome. The design of Huntington’s latest showhome offering at 130 Lake Bend Road is brilliant. Lavish and extremely functional, this two-

5Access to the home’s upper level is attained via a magnificent open-riser oak staircase that winds its way upward beneath six lit oak beams (from Winder Woodworks) that mimic it above. The home’s exterior is a magnificent blend of stone accents and clean modern lines. A striking bronze-coloured door from Creative Door sets off the double garage.4 Spring 2015 | STYLE MANITOBA | 7

storey walkout strikes the perfect balance between fashion and function on each of its three levels. “While fashion is undeniably paramount, the first priority is to create a layout where every room and feature of the home satisfies specific client needs and desires,” says Swan. “The overall layouts of the homes we design aren’t general – they are totally customized designs that showcase particular design features in every room, features that go well beyond the floor plan itself,” he explains. “Our homes are true custom designs in every respect - homes that are ultra-specific to the needs of our clients on a room-to-room basis. I think 130 Lake Bend does a great job of showcasing how we balance function and fashion throughout a home.” This home’s spectacular yet practical design is evident the moment you set foot in the extra wide tiled foyer with its 20-foot ceiling. eyes are immediately drawn to a modern oak staircase with open risers that angles upwards in brisk, linear style between glass stairwell inserts and stainless posts. At the same time, the soaring ceiling continues on the other side of a column-like wall featuring three etched glass panels, an artistic yet functional design feature. The staircase that takes you up to the elevated office is also a functional work of art. “The open concept office was space placed by a collection of piano windows beneath a high ceiling, and is highlighted by a series of six gorgeous, open beams above,” says Swan. “It’s an area that was designed to provide a calming, inspirational atmosphere.” Meanwhile, the adjacent great room is a study in aesthetics and ergonomics. The high ceiling and collection of (six) floor-to-ceiling windows is the start of an alluring space that features a breathtaking wetland view. Gorgeous natural engineered oak hardwoods, a taupe tile entertainment unit, a large ribbon-style fireplace and a TV niche complete this voluminous yet intimate area that’s ideal for visiting with company after dinner. Adjacent is the semi-formal dining area, which has a sunroom-like feel with all of the large windows surrounding it; there’s also loads of lebensraum on all three sides.

5Situated on its own pedestal beneath a 20-foot ceiling – adjacent to a column-like wall featuring three etched glass panels (from Fort Rouge Glass) and three oversized piano windows behind – the elevated den was designed to be a calming, inspirational space.

“It’s actually larger than most formal dining rooms,” says Swan. Last but certainly not least is the well-appointed chef ’s kitchen. “It’s a spacious, functional layout that won’t disappoint even the most discriminating buyer – it’s equal parts panache and practicality. Features like a built-in quartz table adjoins the island, and the butler’s pantry that not only is a great prep space, but also allows you to bring groceries directly into the kitchen from the garage. With a wealth of beautiful, striated oak cabinets, and light and dark quartz countertops, it is an elegant, yet functional area,” he states. “Although these living spaces are segmented, they are seamlessly connected. This integrated design creates an area that’s incredibly functional with great flow between rooms, yet spaces that are distinct at the same time,” notes Swan. Upstairs, the focus is one of liveability and luxury. The liveability is delivered in the form of two huge kids’ bedrooms with walk-in closets.

5Gorgeous oak hardwood flooring from Curtis Carpets sets the stage on the main level. Flow from the expansive chef’s kitchen into the family room – which features a light taupe tile entertainment unit with ribbon fireplace and TV niche – is seamless.

6With its earth tone colour palette, elegant lighting from Super-Lite and light filtering in serenely through custom blinds from Superblinds, the master suite is a spacious, yet cozy retreat. Plush carpeting from Curtis Carpets adds luxury underfoot.

5Bright and generous in size, the ensuite is a spa-like space with its stand-alone soaker tub from Robinson Bath, gorgeous striated oak vanity from Visions Kitchen Showcase with dual sinks and mirrors, and an opulent, tempered glass / tile shower. Fort Rouge Glass provided the mirrors and glass shower.

Then there’s the luxury embodied in a secluded master suite, set off down an eight-foot hallway that leads to its own serene world. “We wanted to create a space that made you feel like you were going to the spa for the weekend, only you get to use it every day,” explains Swan. “The wetland view and ribbon fireplace are just the beginning. The ensuite is your own private getaway with its freestanding bubble jet tub, seven-foot tempered glass shower, heated tile floor and floating vanity with huge mirrors for the dual vanity areas.” The open concept, walkout lower level offers another 1,522 square feet of functional elegantly appointed space, including a games area, media area, wet bar, and a sunroom / sitting area which is surrounded by large windows and leads to a covered patio. Completing this area is the large three-piece bath and exercise room. Swan said the reason for being so specific in the design of each space – from the integrated great room to oversized, functional kids’ bedrooms to the spa-like master suite and recreation-focused walkout basement – is simple. “Focusing on each space and how they interact with the other rooms creates areas that are that much more inviting and functional. When a home’s function is optimized throughout, life is so much easier because everything is exactly where you need it to be – the home will function exactly as you need it to.” Ultimately, the result of such a highly detailed design is a logically laid out, richly finished home that’s built to the highest construction standards – a home that will stand the test of time in every area. About the Builder

Simply Elegant

When brothers Rob and Sheldon Swan launched Huntington Homes in 1986, they were determined to inject much needed control and consistency into the custom homebuilding process. Their many years in the corporate world had instilled a deep respect for a customer-driven process.

Visions Kitchen Showcase Innovative Cabinet Designs

Ph: 204-668-9896 visionskitchenshowcase.com

They knew their primary focus had to be communicating with clients. With that in mind, Huntington Homes set out to provide prospective homeowners with all the tools they needed to make informed choices. They also devised a system to keep meticulous records of precisely what homeowners wanted Huntington to do for them. In this way, the builder could consistently deliver exactly what they had promised the customer. It is an approach that has taken Huntington Homes to the forefront of Manitoba’s custom homebuilding industry. The company has won the Gold Award at the Manitoba Home Builders’ Association Parade of Homes many times, including the Gold Award winner featured in this editorial. But even more important is the trust that homeowners have placed in the builder again and again, building Huntington Homes a reputation for excellence that is second to none.

Home Automation

ART One look at the home at 130 Lake Bend Road in Bridgwater Lakes and it’s hard to believe it could be any more fabulous. Built by Huntington Homes and the winner of last year’s Gold Medal at the Parade of Homes, the property offers 2000 sq. ft. over two floors, plus an additional 1522 sq. ft. in the lower level walkout. Inside, it’s a masterpiece of soaring ceilings, stunning wetland views and executive décor that include a spa-like ensuite, floor to ceiling windows and unique design touches such as a ribbon fireplace. Indeed, the property wowed judges during the Parade.

What is also wowing people is the ease of automation that comes with this new property. Here Huntington Homes turned to Advance and their ART (Advance Residential Technologies) Division for equipment that can deliver all the bells and whistles – literally. According to Trevor Siepman, ART’s Department Manager, they worked to prepare 130 Lake Bend for full home automation. “We put in a control processor when the house was under construction. This is the brains of home automation and allows owners to add systems as they need them,” he says. “There is so much that is possible, we wanted to leave this to the purchaser to decide.”

At present, the home is ready with a security setup that features three cameras that are remotely accessible. Advance also prepped the house for full home audio and wireless. “The capability is all there, making it easy to expand to systems such as window blind automation, HVAC control or even interface with smart appliances where you can turn on the oven from your Smartphone,” says Siepman. “We want people to understand that the best time to consider the benefit is when new home plans are in the works. This gives us an opportunity to get in before walls are up and electrical systems are in place. This keeps costs down and gives us a chance to really make these systems as hands off and invisible as possible,” he explains, remarking that this was the idea behind doing an install in Huntington’s fabulous showhome.

Siepman reports that people can now run virtually everything from audio/visual systems to HVAC, to security systems and home lighting from their Smartphone with Wi-Fi. “It’s as simple as one App connectivity. In the past we wired everything and had to hide all the connections. Now devices such as routers, audio video components and controllers can all be located in one spot away from view, and controlled via devices such as a laptop, tablet or Smartphone from anywhere.” Siepman invites people interested in finding out more about home automation to drop by Advance at 1300 Portage Ave. and walk through their new specialized ART showroom. Here customers can see firsthand the ability of systems to talk to one another and take home living to a new more modern level. “We even have a boardroom style meeting facility so that designers and architects can come in and discuss projects with key members of the staff who are schooled in not just new home designs, but the renovation market and commercial applications as well,” he says, concluding that the future has never been more evident than within the automation options at properties such as 130 Lake Bend. hose who thought Mercedes Benz Winnipeg could not get any better are in for a surprise. This coming spring, the dealership will open its new stateof-the-art facility that will blow the doors off anything currently available in the local luxury car market. The new 3.28-acre location at 24 Rothwell Road off Kenaston in the south end of the city will offer more than 55,000 square feet of modern architecture that will house more models and offer more service. “This will be a new flagship store for Canada,” says General Sales Manager Mark Kelly. He reports that inside customers will find much that is different. For starters the décor will sport a new black signature colour key that will extend throughout a facility that is screamingly modern and energy efficient – just like the cars on show. On the ground level 17,000 sq. ft. will provide display room for 18 to 20 new models, including an AMG Performance area. “In the lower level we will have 18,000 sq. ft of additional showroom space for Certified Pre-Owned cars, making us the true one-stop shop for all things Mercedes here in Manitoba,” he says, commenting that Mercedes Benz Winnipeg is yet again the winner of the highly prestigious Star Dealer Award (2015) for service excellence.

There is more. According to Kelly, sales of Mercedes Benz products have been remarkable. In fact, the new GLK and ML series are among the top sellers in luxury class SUV’s. He reports that the dealership has seen one record breaking sales month after another, thanks to the line where drivers can now get into a new Benz for around $34,000. “With more customers, we have ramped up our service offering to make sure that the quality of the Mercedes experience is maintained. To do this we have greatly enlarged the service area to 16,000 sq. ft.,” says Kelly, noting that the area will feature 16 state-of-the-art work bays, including four bays dedicated to the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter vans, as well as an additional three-bay detail centre. In addition, the plans call for a six-vehicle customer drivethru reception area to more efficiently serve the needs of after-sales customers. “We are also increasing the size of our team by 20 percent. This means more support and service personnel, as well as more sales people to make the total experience as effortless and well considered as possible. We want to continue to be a place that is about more than just quality cars. As our 2015 Star Dealer Award shows, Mercedes Benz Winnipeg is about a total package that seeks to takes things to a higher level for our customers.”

While the old location at Portage and Moray has been a modern and comfortable location over the past 14 years, the new site will simply offer more. There will be more cars under the roof, an aspect that means more comfortable shopping. Service customers will find more ways to relax with an even better appointed lounge area with full Internet connectivity and productivity tools. “The location itself will be beneficial to our customers of which the majority live in the south end of the city. The site, just across from Tuxedo Business Park on Kenaston, will also make morning drop-offs to our service department or a quick visit to the dealership much easier for many, many people,” says Kelly, suggesting that those who thought the dealership was the best it could possibly be should think again. The new Mercedes Benz Winnipeg dealership will open spring / summer 2015 at 24 Rothwell Road. Visit www.winnipeg.mercedes-benz.ca for more information.

WHEN IT COMES TO INVESTMENTS, WHAT YOU DON’T KNOW CAN HURT YOU! In 2011, Morningstar Inc. published a report detailing that Canada has, on average, the highest mutual fund fees in the world. In fact, Morningstar gave Canada’s mutual fund industry an F grade in their global ranking for having the highest fees among the 22 countries surveyed in their report. Morningstar reported that Canadian mutual funds routinely charge management expense ratios (MERs) between 2% to 3%. Canada was the only country to receive an F grade. As Rob Carrick, writer for the Globe and Mail, stated in his article of August 22, 2013 entitled Don’t let investment fees ruin your retirement, “The killer argument for paying attention to investing fees: They could mean the difference between having enough for retirement and running out of money.” In 1998, Jonathan Chevreau wrote a book entitled The Wealthy Boomer: Life After Mutual Funds, in which former Mercer actuary Malcolm Hamilton wrote the following in the forward of the book: “American investors can find no-load mutual funds with MERs under 0.25%. Canadian investors can’t. For this, Canadians have only themselves to blame. We aren’t price sensitive. We either don’t know what we’re paying, or we don’t care. If the customer doesn’t care what the product costs, the producer has no reason to economize. High MERs mean better incomes for investment managers. They mean bigger profits for the fund companies. They mean larger trailer fees for brokers. They mean fat advertising budgets. In the long run, everyone is happy - except the customer. Until investors demand a better product by rewarding those who provide it and punish those who don’t, Canadian mutual funds will have high MERs. And as long as MERs stay high, using mutual funds intelligently means using them less.” Although information concerning the affect that fees can ultimately have on an investor’s net returns over time and on their retirement income is readily available on the Internet and from other sources, Canadian investors are slow to change to more cost effective alternative investment solutions. Why might you ask? There currently exists a huge Information Gap in the Financial Services industry. As Robert Mysicka noted in his report for the C. D. Howe Institute Who Watches the Watchmen? – The Role of the Self-Regulator: “Professionals with specialized knowledge have an interest in maintaining or even perpetuating the information imbalance that exists between them and the consumers that they serve. The reason for this is simple: most professionals earn their living by selling some variety of ‘information products.’ These products are governed by the harsh realities of information commodity markets, as explained by Google’s chief economist Hal Varian: In a free

20 | STYLE MANITOBA | Spring 2015

market, once several companies have sunk the costs necessary to create an undifferentiated product, competitive forces will usually move the product’s price toward its marginal cost – the cost of manufacturing an additional copy. And because the marginal cost of reproducing information tends to be very low, the price of an information product, if left to the market place, will tend to be low as well. What makes information products economically attractive – their low reproduction cost – also makes them economically dangerous. (Varian 2000, page 134) We have all heard the saying that talk is cheap. In the world of professional advisory services, at least, advice can be even cheaper, especially if the same knowledge benefits a large number of people. As Varian notes, the attractiveness of information products for consumers also makes them dangerous to professionals, whose earnings potential depends on their ability to bridge an information gap. As the information gap shrinks or is closed entirely, professionals’ earnings potential declines. Therefore, while many professionals have a duty (whether legal or moral) to educate the public and to promote better understanding of issues within the scope of their expertise, professionals always have an incentive to maintain, or in some cases, even to perpetuate information gaps between themselves and their clients.” There’s a distinct advantage to keeping investment costs low: All else being equal, lower-cost investments provide greater net returns than higher-cost investments. This advantage becomes more pronounced over time.

As a wise man once said: “An investment in knowledge pays the best interest!” B enjamin F ranklin . Knowledge is not Power; Applied Knowledge is Power! To know and not to do is worse than not knowing!

INCREASE YOUR RETURNS BY DECREASING THE FEES YOU ARE PAYING! If you are still investing in mutual funds, segregated funds and other types of pooled investments, it may be advantageous for you to consider the advantages of Separately Managed Accounts (SMAs) invested by Portfolio Managers who are bound by a fiduciary duty to always act in the best interest of their clients. This fiduciary duty creates the highest standard for Portfolio Managers who must be independent and unbiased unlike other Financial Advisors who may only be held to a standard of suitability which only requires these advisors to recommend products that are appropriate for an investor, even if there are more appropriate investment alternatives available. One of the major advantages of SMAs can be lower costs. Management fees charged for SMAs are based on the total amount of assets invested. For larger portfolios, the percentage charged is reduced. Fees can be lower than 1% for larger accounts and are generally tax deductible for non registered accounts unlike most mutual funds and all segregated funds issued by life insurance companies. If you do not know exactly how much you are paying in dollars and cents each year in fees to have your investments managed, then you could be paying too much which could lower your net returns. You should receive (or demand, if necessary) a written summary of all fees paid over the course of the year to ensure that you are not overpaying for investment management. Call to arrange for a no cost, no obligation written report comparing what you are currently paying in investment management fees versus how much you could be paying with a Portfolio Manager who is bound by a fiduciary duty to act in your best interest.* A little bit of time and effort could save you thousands per year and could amount to hundreds of thousands of additional dollars for you to enjoy in your retirement. * Minimum household portfolios of $500,000

Flavourful cuisine with flair With its white stucco walls, white table linens, sparkling glasses and discrete lighting, The Mitchell Block in Winnipeg’s Exchange District gives the promise of something to be savoured. Ushered promptly to a table, we are immediately offered herby moist focaccia bread to be lathered with sundried tomato butter and splashed with balsamic. See what we mean? Indeed, the main attraction of The Mitchell Block is nothing but chef/owner Sean McKay’s artful and flavourful cuisine. Bevies included! Brilliantly boozy signature drinks bowl us over. “Prairie Penicillin” is precisely what the doctor ordered - an invigorating honey-lemon blend of whiskey and ginger liqueur. And “Vieux Carre” is a monkish throwback of bourbon, cognac and vermouth mixed with herbal liqueur and bitters. Think Jaggermiester, only quenching! To pair? Bison Carpaccio: one of the most creative starter plates we’ve tried in awhile. Thin tenderized bison is elaborately garnished with tangy capers and shavings of preserved sunny egg yolk and Parmigiano. But the crackers steal the show. Snap crackle popping like Rice Krispies, the server explains that the crowning puffed crackers are flash fried micro-thin slices of beef. Amazing! A small mixed salad adds the necessary green and crunch, harmonizing apple, celery, hemp seeds, candied walnuts and cranberry. For mains, McKay’s pastas get rave reviews, and a bowl of fresh fettuccine is no exception, tangling up spicy dense chorizo and plump prawns with peppers and roasted corn in a creamy saffron sauce. Gourmet home-style cooking then gets plated thanks to Manitoba Chicken Breast on gravy-drenched mash. This traditional meat and potato dish gets a complex accent with fig, chèvre cheese, beet and leafy kale. The Mitchell Block has an excellent wine list with something for everyone: Beringer’s Californian Zinfandel rosé is a happy swirl of strawberry and rhubarb. And crimson Yalumba Y Series Shiraz Viognier strikes with dark cherry and spiced cake. On a roll - time for dessert. Dark Chocolate Cake and Crème Brûlé are big favourites here, but we just can’t say no to New York Cheese Cake, especially Mitchell Block’s unique interpretation. Typical crust gets nixed for a mason jar filled with the heavenly creamy cake. Toppings of lemon curd, almond and spongy meringue makes for a mmmm-mellow finish. Remember to head upstairs to The Mitchell Block lounge for late night bites, sips and stellar downtown view.

Enoteca Wine Bar

A-1670 Corydon Avenue One-time gourmet bad boy Chef Scott Bagshaw finally got a kitchen of his own. Spring is the Time to De-clutter, Reorganize, and Deep Clean The best order of operation is: De-clutter, Reorganize, Spring Clean. For the most efficient way to de-clutter your home, follow each step as listed below: 1. Find 4 boxes and label: a. Toss it - items that are damaged, broken and not worth giving away. b. Sell or Give Away - seldom or never used but often have an emotional attachment; be hard on yourself and ask, “When did I last use it?” This can be the most difficult part of the entire project. c. Store It - useful and needed items but used infrequently.

d. Put Away - used often; must have a designated place. Work your way through each room depositing items appropriately into the boxes. 2. To stay organized, finish one room before starting another. The feeling of accomplishment will energize you to continue on to the next room. 3. Remember to include closets, cabinets, and storage areas. 4. This may take a day or several days, depending on the circumstances. When you’re finished, you can dispose of the Toss it items, and put the Store It and Put Away items in their designated homes. Now…on to the difficult part. 5. It’s best to keep the Sell or Give Away box in the garage or basement for one week, giving you time to accept or reject the idea of being without those “emotional” items. If you just can’t part with an item, then you should retrieve it and find a place for it in your home. But… be hard on yourself. 6. Garage sales or charities are typical ways for dealing with the items in this category. Take Time Home Cleaning & Lifestyle Services offers De-cluttering, Reorganizing and Spring Cleaning by experienced and certified professionals. For more information call 204-770-7103.

FRESH AND

SAUCY

Pork 12 oz / 0.375 kg Canadian pork tenderloin, well-trimmed 1 ½ tsp / 7 mL chopped fresh thyme Salt and pepper to taste 1 Tbsp / 15 mL canola oil

Wild Blueberry Pan Sauce ¾ cup / 175 mL dry red wine 1 cup / 250 mL frozen wild blueberries 1 Tbsp / 15 mL sugar 1 tsp / 5 mL grated lemon rind 1 ½ tsp / 7 mL cornstarch combined with 2 Tbsp / 30 mL water

Pork Medallions with Wild Blueberry Pan Sauce

Cut tenderloin into six equal pieces. With cut side down, pound gently to an even thickness, about ½-inch. Pat medallions dry with paper towels; season with thyme, salt and pepper. Heat oil in skillet over medium-high heat. Brown medallions, about 2 minutes per side. Transfer medallions to a rack on a rimmed baking tray in a 200ºF (93ºC) oven to keep warm while making the pan sauce.

Wild Blueberry Pan Sauce Drain any fat from skillet. Pour in wine; bring to a boil over high heat, stirring to scrape up any brown bits from the bottom of the pan. Reduce heat to medium; boil an additional 3 minutes. Stir in blueberries, sugar and lemon rind; return to a boil. Stir cornstarch mixture into sauce and simmer just until clear. Pool sauce onto warm dinner plates. Top with medallions. Serves 4

Searing the medallions locks in moisture and adds flavour. The secret to not overcooking the medallions is to remove them from the skillet while they still have a rosy centre.

Pairing suggestion: Pairs well with a medium to full-bodied red wine such as a Californian Zinfandel or an Australian Shiraz.

Bookshelf If I Fall, If I Die

(McClelland & Stewart) by Michael Christie It’s just Will and his mother Diane, literally, in their house in Thunder Bay. Diane is severely agoraphobic and has stayed inside for years, with teen-aged Will her only protector. But when Will ventures Outside for the first time on his own, he encounters a world more complex, thrilling, and dangerous in ways he couldn’t imagine. When a local boy goes missing, Will and his new skater friend Jonah discover the dark side of the city. Michael Christie deftly juggles a compelling, suspenseful mystery, a comingof-age story, and a sensitive portrait of a mother and son.

The Sex Life of the Amoeba (MiroLand) by Barry Healey

Want to know what the movie business is really like in Canada? Barry Healey has been writing, directing, and producing films for decades. He’s also published his first novel, a fun romp about what happens when CanLit meets show biz, with an émigré Hungarian producer of soft-core low-budget features (e.g. Sorority Playgirls); a paranoid, delusional character actor who takes method acting to extremes; and our narrator, an idealistic young woman who wants to turn a great Canadian novel into a Quality Movie. The screwball comedy mounts up as the cameras keep rolling.

Put on the Armour of Light (Dundurn) by Catherine Macdonald

Catherine Macdonald worked as a researcher and archivist, and those skills feature in this, her first novel. It’s a Winnipeg summer, June 1899, and Reverend Charles Lauchlan tries some amateur sleuthing to prove his former university roommate is innocent of murder. There’s lots of historical colour, from the city’s old jail to mansions on Broadway, from Colony Creek to the bordellos of Annabella Street, as Charles encounters corruption in high places, backroom deals, and the whisper of big money: seems like nothing ever changes.

(Random House Canada) by Linden MacIntyre From the author of the much-loved The Bishop’s Man comes a novel about justice, judgment and loyalty. A teenaged girl dies and suspicion falls on Dwayne Strickland, an ex-con with a shady past, someone who never quite fit in this clannish, close-knit small town. But then, neither does Tony Breau, a retired prison guard who came home to retire and renew his acquaintanceship with Caddy, his first love, who just happens to have raised the dead girl as her own. Linden MacIntyre’s latest is a page-turner, set in a place where too much memory is toxic.

STEREO Reviewed by Randal McIlroy Pink Floyd The Endless River (Sony) It is what it isn’t – neither a new Pink Floyd album nor a lost one, but reclamation of unused music, mostly from sessions in 1993 for The Division Bell, woven into a 53-minute instrumental suite that saves its sole song until the end. David Gilmour and drummer Nick Mason see The Endless River as farewell to their late keyboard player, Richard Wright, but it’s easier to hear this as a balm for longtime, headphone-wrapped listeners who remember ample space and suggestion in the music before the lyrics intruded. It’s the minted sound, with stately rhythms and rich, buoyant keyboard playing lifting Gilmour’s keening guitar solos. It’s narcotic, too, and even those fans in the headphones may grow restless waiting for something to happen, but deft mixing introduces healthy interruptions – Wright’s beautiful turn at a pipe organ, Mason’s excited percussion flurry. Tunes? “Anisina,” guided warmly by Gilmour on piano and welcoming a saxophone, is a theme waiting for a movie. The closing song, “Louder than Words,” with female backing singers, could have been a legendary excision from The Dark Side of the Moon. Like the studio footage and extra tracks on the DVD with a deluxe version, however, The Endless River is taken best as a bonus coda.

Erasure The Violet Flame (Deluxe Version) (Mute) After recent forays assigning their pop drama to acoustic instruments, Erasure sounds happy reconnected to familiar programming. A wise move, that. Their love songs are swooning, scolding or guilty, but singer Andy Bell stakes his life to them, while Vince Clarke sets the machines to urgent. “Sacred,” with its trumpeted emotion and “Reason,” modulated with softer keyboards compare well to the favourites cut live for the deluxe version’s second disc – pop music at once earthbound and heavenly. Why TV’s current generation of singing hopefuls doesn’t ransack the Clarke/Bell catalogue is a mystery.

The Incredible String Band U (BGO) Long before world music, The Incredible String Band’s Robin Williamson and Mike Heron created their own worlds, with an uncommon armoury of Indian and Middle Eastern instruments tuned to the Scots’ singular poetry. Recorded in 1970, U capped four years of golden (and sometimes gaudy) invention, with close to two hours of music composed for a stage show – this welcome reissue explains all in the expanded notes – and while familiarity with the fast-forward button may be a comfort for initiates, the high points astonish. The unbounded Williamson anticipates Celtic mysticism by decades with the deep echoes of “Invocation” and “Time,” and “Puppet Song” summarizes the show’s theme of the human journey in admirably light form, with snappy guitar. Heron is by now the more earthbound of the two, trusting to piano and electric guitar; “Walking Along with You” celebrates a rare, husky vocal from bassist Rose Simpson, and “Bridge Song” and the 15-minute closer, “Rainbow,” draw the most from all four singers, including soprano Licorice McKechnie.

A Man, A Boat & the Baltic Sea By Quentin Mills-Fenn Kelly Gray has spent decades editing and writing for all manner of magazines (including this one), but this time he has his own story to tell. Style Manitoba caught up with Kelly on a busy weekend at The Forks Market, as he sat at a kiosk and chatted to people about his new book, The Less You Know: The Wolseley Voyager.

120 DONALD STREET DOWNTOWN WINNIPEG 204 947 3766 WWW.SOCIETYTHESALON.COM

“I have sailing and canoeing and kayaking experience, but I had no motor boat experience,” Gray enthusiastically confessed to total strangers. “So I went to The Netherlands, bought a boat for a few thousand dollars, and set off for the Baltic Sea.” He explained to Style why he wanted to cruise the rivers and canals of Europe, despite lacking the necessary knowledge, expertise, and maybe good sense. “I was looking for a way to change things up,” he says. “Something new, something that required learning. Part of the idea behind the whole project was to leave myself open to opportunity. There are always a million reasons not to do something. I wanted to do something completely different.” That brought him to the picturesque town of Delft, where he lodged at the old gaol-house, spending days talking with canal dwellers and checking out boat prospects. Then Djes came into his life, all steel-hulled, 4 1/2 tons of her. A boat with no electricity, no heat, and no water - it was just what Gray needed. “Djes was built in the 1960s as a service boat, to service small fishing boats in The Netherlands,” he says. “The guy who owned it and loved it passed away and left it in the dock with all his stuff in it. They were going to strip it for parts - the engine, everything,” says Gray. “I was supposed to get papers but that wasn’t my style. I was living in the old gaol in Delft and I wanted to get out of jail and on the boat,” he adds. “It had no reverse and it crabbed off to the left but away I went,” he says with a smile. “I thought if it breaks down, I’m going to discover what needs to be done. Whatever transpired, I would find a solution for it.” That was Gray’s mantra for the voyage, and the source of his title: the less you know at the beginning, the more you learn as you go along. The Less You Know is the story of that trip, a tale of solitude, solace, and mechanical misadventures. Gray sets off, seeing the sights and making friends, or at least puzzling and irritating the authorities. “I would get out early in the morning and wander these small towns before dawn with my camera. I was surrounded by natural and manmade beauty,” he says. “The Mosul River is remarkable,” he adds as an example. “So beautiful, so clear. The salmon have come back. Children swim in the river. It’s a wonderland. Vineyards coming down to the water, castles above.” Did he succeed? Did Djes take Kelly Gray to the Baltic? Or might a hole in the hull threaten the whole adventure? Let’s just say the Wolseley Voyager has plans for another book or two...

ith two young children to look after, Ted and Tracy Simmons already have a busy family life. Yet, their extended business family is growing larger every day. The Simmons couldn’t be happier. And their clients are too. The Simmons have recently settled back in their home province to raise their kids, and to open a unique massage clinic that is garnering – quite literally – rave reviews. In March 2014, the Simmons opened Rave Massage, a therapeutic massage clinic located at the Shoppes of St. Vital retail development on St. Mary’s Road. The couple had returned to Manitoba after a 14-year stint in Fort McMurray, Alberta, where they owned and operated a physical therapy/ massage therapy clinic. Ted, a physical therapist, grew up in the St. Vital area, while Tracy, clinic manager, was raised in Beausejour. Now, through Rave Massage, their Winnipeg clients can benefit from the expertise they gained while out west.

Making Massage Matter B y L e i g h Pat t e r s o n Photography: Michael Roberts

“We learned what worked, what didn’t, and what people really wanted from their massage clinic,” says Tracy. With Rave Massage, the couple has also introduced an exciting concept: the first membershipbased massage therapy clinic in Winnipeg. Through the membership model, Rave Massage clients have the option to receive a $20 discount on their massage if they commit to booking a one-hour massage once a month. So far, 500 clients have made this monthly commitment to their health and wellbeing. The Simmons aren’t surprised at the great response to date. “Membership massage clinics are really popular in the U.S. and out east, in places like Toronto,” says Tracy. She notes that the low member rate can be extended to family members in the same household. Unused massages can be rolled over for use in the next month so there are no concerns about missing a treatment. Over and above the financial incentives and health benefits of regular massage gained through membership are perks like the free aromatherapy that comes with each treatment. All Rave Massage clients are treated to therapeutic massage in a soothing, spa-like setting on comfortable massage tables with heating pads tucked under the sheets. Clients appreciate this simple touch of soothing warmth. “I listen to clients in the waiting room who say it’s so nice to have the heat as part of their treatment; they really look forward to it, “ says Tracy. With 19 registered Massage Therapists specializing in therapeutic massage, Rave Massage “offers so many options,” says Ted. “That means there are a lot more options available: early in the day, after work, on weekends. We’re open seven days a week, and we can accommodate walk-ins,” he notes.

“Our online booking service is popular because it gives people flexibility; they can book an appointment when it’s convenient for them, 24/7.” A number of Rave Massage therapists specialize in areas like pregnancy massage and sports injury therapy. The clinic also offers hot stone massage, couples massage and add-on services like foot exfoliation massage and aromatherapy scalp massage.

“People ask if we are a franchise and I say ‘nope, it’s just me and Ted,’” Tracy laughs. However, she thinks their children may already be gearing up to follow in their footsteps. “My youngest says he wants to be a ‘massager.’” Website: www.ravemassage.com

Along with its core of massage therapists, Rave Massage also employs six friendly receptionists to make sure every client gets the right treatment at the best time and at an affordable rate. “We have a great team,” says Tracy. “They all like working in such a nice setting, so much so that our employees have brought their friends and family members here – and they have become our clients.” Rave Massage’s family-friendly atmosphere and client-centered focus is bringing word-of-mouth success to the clinic. Country Chic When a country setting meets chic fashion, something beautiful happens. On this particular day it happened to Brittnay, a talented esthetician from Salon One 11, and her husband Chad. To help produce her glamorous chic look, clip in hair extensions, that were previously coloured to match her hair, were added for length. Hair stylist Kristen then created a soft loose curl that was strategically pinned to the side for a beautiful romantic finish. To match her glamourous styled hair, make-up artist Kaleigh used natural toned eye colours to bring out Brittnay’s gorgeous eyes, and then added black gel eyeliner and lashes for a little more drama. To finish, a pop of red lip colour was added to create that old Hollywood style look and feel. Hair Stylist - Kristen Darroch Make-up Artist - Kaleigh Bartlette Photography – Jensen & Co. If you are planning a wedding, you’ll want to look your best, so it’s important to schedule your salon appointments well in advance. Consider that you have to book hair, make-up, nails, facials, etc., at least six months before the big day. And if you’re planning a destination wedding, it’s best to be well prepared ahead of time. The pros at rituals in hair and skin recommend booking at least three facials prior to going away, one of them being a back facial, especially for those wearing low backed gowns. Take the appropriate facial products with you. Sunscreen is a must, and the Yonka skincare line has the best moisturizer plus tint to protect, while also giving skin that healthy looking glow. While in for your pre-trip facial, have a make-up lesson and a review of your hair regimen, so you can take the right colours and travel size products needed for your trip. (rituals in hair and skin can also make up travel size packages for your bridal party, which can be given as gifts.) Call and book Pearl Angelini Photography ahead of time, and she will travel with your party to make sure your wedding pictures are perfect. says, “This is an exciting and actively visible way that we can create a Centre of Excellence for healthier living for the people of our community.” The project is the largest fundraising endeavour in the Concordia Foundation’s history. Indeed, the effort will surpass the $10 million the group raised over a four-year period to complete the Concordia Hip & Knee Institute. Reports suggest a fundraising effort will seek a $15 million buy-in from the general public in the form of donations that will add to the funds being sought from the Federal and Provincial governments. With fundraising efforts going well, expectations are that the first runners will lace their shoes in 2017. For more information, contact the Concordia Foundation at 204-661-7156.

According to the architects, LM Architectural Group (LM), this facility is being planned as both a rehabilitation centre to support the adjacent Concordia Hip & Knee Institute and its joint replacement program, and as a community health and fitness centre in an underserviced quadrant of north east Winnipeg. Featuring a mixed-use program, the building is conceptually organized with non-active program spaces forming the main floor base of the building with the active spaces on top. Taking its form from the geometry of the running track, this two-storey glass pavilion will house a variety of open and contained activity spaces. The roof of the main floor base will be developed for outdoor fitness activities with direct access from the second floor Spring 2015 | STYLE MANITOBA | 41

A Place to Grow B y K elly G ray Many of us have concerns about our aging relatives. And with more senior Canadians than ever, this concern is a growing fact of life that requires a thoughtful approach. Enter All Seniors Care Living Centres, an organization that offers seven residences in Manitoba where they combine the need for quality lifestyle with the necessary supports to help seniors throughout their senior years. The principal idea at All Seniors Care is to allow every senior to comfortably age in place. “No one likes to move, so we have programs to provide the right residences when people need them, and we do it in a way that meets our residents’ high standards for lifestyle,” says Tricia Charles, Vice-President of Operations, Manitoba, All Seniors Care Living Centres Ltd. Here, she points to Shaftesbury Park Retirement Residence, a 188-suite assisted living facility in the heart of Tuxedo. At Shaftesbury Park, there are two styles of care – one for more independent seniors, and The Boulevard, a section for up to 38 residents who may have symptoms of dementia or other disorders that require a bit more specialized attention. “Our Boulevard section is really luxury secured living,” she says, noting that they utilize a custom approach to each resident where things such as likes and dislikes as well as physical limitations are assessed and then written into a comprehensive personalized overall plan known as a Quality of Life Assessment or QOLA. “There is a lot of communication with family on these matters that can be quite fluid. We stay

on top of concerns by getting to really know our residents as well as their families.” She reports that residents of The Boulevard have the benefit of round the clock health care staff where residents are looked after in their own amenity-rich suites. “Certainly one thing that distinguishes us is the fact that we have a Registered Nurse on staff complimented by our Health Care Aides.” The Boulevard section is secured for safety. Suites themselves offer a variety of enhanced features that allow for 24-hour monitoring of residents where health challenges demand a higher level of vigilance. Alongside aides or with friends or family or even on an independent basis, residents of The Boulevard are still able to access the full facility. This means it’s a simple matter to drop in to the dining room for nutrition-minded menus prepared by the site’s Red Seal Chef or participate in some of the numerous social activities. “We understand that people are all different and part of our approach is to allow independence with supports. The idea is to enhance quality of life at every point. For example, The Boulevard residents receive daily exercise classes and many participate in therapeutic group activities,” explains Charles. A very important benefit of Shaftesbury Park is that couples no longer have to split up because

of age related health decline. Here, residents may live together in one of the assisted living suites till such time that more support may be required and one of the pair is moved over to The Boulevard section. “Couples can still be together, but in a safer more secure setting where our staff can ensure the highest level of comfort,” she notes. For those not requiring the level of care found on The Boulevard side of the assisted living program at Shaftesbury Park, the luxury lifestyle attributes are no less thoughtful. For instance, residents have a choice of well-appointed one and two-bedroom suites that come with kitchenettes, in-suite climate control, balconies or patios and large contemporary bathrooms. The common areas are located throughout the building in a design that is tailored to community. There is even a nondenominational chapel. And when residents have guests from out of town, there is a hospitality suite available to make their stay as comfortable as possible. “We also have a lovely tranquil library complete with fireplace, an Internet lounge as well as our Bistro Coffee Lounge, and there is even a movie theatre,” says the Director of Health and Wellness, mentioning a wealth of services, including health inspired dining room menus that offer real choice, dry cleaning pickup, an in-building Tuck Shop, weekly housekeeping, a billiards /games room and the shuttle bus. “At Shaftesbury Park Retirement Residence, our mindset is first and foremost about creating a caring community that seeks to simplify and take a lot of the bumps out of the road for seniors who want to live life on their terms.“

Easy Living B y K e l ly G r ay

Seniors in southern Manitoba have an opportunity to have it all with Homestead South, a 55 + assisted living facility in Morden that really takes the bumps out of the road. “At Homestead South, residents make all the choices and we do all the work,” says Betty Froese, Manager of the 81-suite residence. She points out that at Homestead South, it’s all about being able to relax and make the most of life in a comfortable environment surrounded by friends and community. What’s on offer is a four-storey facility that features one and two bedroom fully equipped suites in four formats in a setting that makes life easy. For example, residents have the option of cooking meals in-suite or coming down to the dining room where chef Owen Klippenstein prepares a delicious menu of familiar foods that takes health and nutrition to heart. There is also an on-site nurse that comes in once a week. “This is important because in a rural community, doctor visits for things like a blood test can mean significant travel time. By having the nurse we can lessen this and simplify things for our residents,” she says, adding that they also have Sunday worship service, weekly entertainment, regular planned outings and exercise classes, as well as games and coffee

every afternoon in the common area. Homestead South has a library, hair salon and a fully equipped exercise room. The welldesigned facility completes the package with a private dining room for special occasions, and two guest suites to accommodate visiting family. “The atmosphere is amazing and residents are overwhelmingly positive about the experience,” she says, noting that residents have told her that Homestead South is the place to be with a basic monthly rent that takes care of everything from cooking to cleaning. “This is a very straight forward monthly fee structure that includes meals, housekeeping and activities. You can forget the snow shovel or lawnmower. We do it all.”

At Homestead South the focus is on community and offering just the right amount of support. “Our residents are independent and we are here only to facilitate lifestyle and make life a little bit easier for seniors,” says Froese, concluding that there is nothing like their package of easy living options anywhere else in Southern Manitoba. Homestead South is located at 400 Loren Drive in Morden. Visit www.homesteadsouth.ca for more information.

Froese suggests that the staff is like family, a view backed up by residents. “Initially, it was a big decision to leave our own home behind, but it did not take long for us to settle in,” say Homestead South community members Waldy and Patricia Humeniuk. “The staff here is courteous and thoughtful, always sharing a smile. From the housekeeping they provide, and the events and activities they host, the fresh meals they prepare and serve each day, all of the employees are like family in our new home.”

P h o t o gr a p h y: M i c h a e l R o b e rts

Matt Bell wants to make life easier for property owners. Matt is president of Geller’s Year Round Property Service, a local company that handles it all from snow removal and lawn care to tree pruning and power raking, to landscape design and install to full maintenance packages on both commercial and residential properties. Simply, if you want your property to look its best, you better call Geller’s. Bell reports they are a bit different from others in the property care sector. “We got our start in maintenance rather than as a company that works seasonal landscaping and lawn cutting. This has meant that our crews work all year. So, the guys that keep driveways and parking lots free of snow are also the pros you see on your property cutting grass, building a retaining wall or laying the stones for a new sidewalk or patio,” he says, adding that year round work also means their crews stay on and look to Geller’s as a great place for a career. “Our people are also some of the best trained in the industry. We never send a team out to a job without at least one person supervising on the crew who is a fully experienced landscaper. We pride ourselves in our professionalism and our attention to detail.” Geller’s offers a 100 percent satisfaction guarantee, free estimates, and uses equipment with the highest environmental standards. Staff are continually upgrading their skill sets and each

worker comes to the job with a criminal record check. “By having staff with things like certificates in landscape management means our customers get the very best,” he says, adding that Geller’s fully supervised crews come to your site in uniforms with the latest in well serviced company decaled equipment that reflects well on your business or home. “We are also more affordable, because we are not a seasonal fly-by-night operation that has to maximize revenue over a short period. We are here for the long haul and our competitive pricing and willingness to go the extra distance shows this.” The business model at Geller’s has them approaching customers first as a maintenance company where their performance is their resume. “Once we establish trust, we are often the first company a residential or commercial customer will come to if they want a new tree

planted or a diseased tree removed. We are already on site with the skills to get interlocking stones laid and backyards turned into dream spaces. It all starts with trust that we build by walking the talk as the guys who take simple maintenance tasks like sidewalk snow shovelling or spring lawn clean-up to a higher level,” says Bell. “Why have four or five different contractors on your property to get the job done when you can have just one company do it all?” he asks. “Having one company do the snow removal and another the lawn maintenance and another company design and build a backyard space complicates life. Our goal is to simplify so that our clients can just relax and enjoy their exterior spaces. We don’t use subcontractors. At Geller’s we do it all in-house with our trained crews, our specialized equipment and our wellknown detail oriented attitude. And, we do it all with just one phone call and one flat rate for monthly maintenance packages. This is our value equation.” Geller’s Year Round Property Service has been cutting your neighbour’s grass and hauling snow off driveways and parking lots for years. Matt suggests that now is the time to finally take it easy and make the call to a company that does it all. “Life is short. Do you really want to spend it maintaining your property when it’s so easy to let Geller’s get it done?”

There’s no need to start from scratch if the bones are there, but you might need help to realize the full potential of your outdoor living space. Such was the case in this mature Tuxedo backyard. Here, there is a perfectly functional deck leading from the home, as well as an interlocking brick patio closer to the rear of the yard overlooking a retention pond. The homeowners relied on the expertise of 3 Seasons Landscaping to breathe new life into the rest of the property. Their team installed new Tyndall stone pathways, constructed a large pond with a maintenance-free waterfall and added a new cedar bridge with downlighting for evening ambiance. The rest of the yard was gutted to make way for extensive cottage-style gardens. Mature trees were left standing to maintain shade and privacy while adding texture and height to the yard.

Backyard Retreat As the warm weather arrives, Manitobans flock outdoors determined to spend as much time as possible relaxing with family and friends. In fact, an increasing number of savvy homeowners are turning their backyards into urban retreats that can be enjoyed every day, all season long. A strong word-of-mouth reputation has clients relying on Samson Pools to make their dreams a reality. “We offer custom designed backyards that expand indoor entertaining experiences to the outdoors,” says Samson Pools co-owner Jonathan Kreviazuk. “Since we know that our summers are short and that clients want to enjoy their yards quickly, we can professionally design and install a fully landscaped yard including pool in as little as two weeks.” Samson Pools offers complete, convenient, turnkey inground pool packages with everything included. This means that once installed, the pool is ready to use with nothing required on the part of the homeowner – just jump in and enjoy! And contrary to popular belief, there’s very little maintenance required. “I would say that if you spend a half hour a week on maintaining the pool, that’s a lot,”

Kreviazuk notes, adding that Samson Pools sells automatic pool cleaners, as well as a single chemical package that lasts all year. “It takes a lot of the guesswork out of it.” Everything from pools to outdoor patios to landscaping can be handled from start to finish by Samson Pool’s expert team. Striving

to provide the most maintenance and worryfree backyard renovation experience possible to their clients is a commitment that both Kreviazuk and co-owner Blair Irwin have held since Day One. Visit the website at: www.samsonpools.ca

Ah

, the cottage. That wonderful sanctuary unto which we escape for rest and recuperation. That place where clocks run slow and wine runs, well, faster. And that’s just how we like it: Cab Sauv, if you don’t mind, preferably new world Argentinian.

| Photography: Brandon Barre

In our world, with a schedule that propels us between Canada, Britain and, most recently Australia as design experts on lifestyle show The Living Room, we’re always searching for somewhere to catch our breath. That said, we love our job, so you’ll hear no grumbling from us.

Yes indeed, we’re happy with our professional mission: to make ordinary homes extraordinary for style challenged homeowners across three continents. Two years past, however, we met the trickiest clients we’ve ever worked with: ourselves. Having purchased a rundown cottage in Muskoka, the race was on to transform it into a chic bolt hole before our nerves – and our budget - got the better of us. To compound matters, we’d been invited to film the transformation for the Cottage Life television network. And they’d suggested a three month deadline..

The rough-hewn wooden table conjures the spirit of Restoration Hardware, one of our favourite retail destinations. Mixing leather and black wooden chairs elicits the perfect dining scene. A faux antler chandelier, floating above, provides dimmable illumination at the twist of a button. 56 | STYLE MANITOBA | Spring 2015

In the master bedroom (the result of combining two smaller rooms) we created a relaxed atmosphere with a creamy painted scheme to ‘minimize’ the overpowering v groove pine. Benjamin Moore Revere Pewter was our weapon of choice, and paired as it is against the joists (which we left unpainted) the resultant aesthetics are dramatic yet soothing. For the most part pattern was limited, though we conceded a spot of Robert Allen Ikat fabric for drapery (and toss pillows) and geometric weave rugs from the C+J Home collection (find our line in stores like Homesense, Winners and Marshalls). A large custom headboard stretches along one elevation, its soft nickel pins visually balanced by pale lumber nightstands and dressers. Opposite the bed sit two comfy chaise lounges, which we found in Ikea. (Our schemes are peppered with affordable detailing that helps moderate spending. It’s just how we roll…) In the basement, after ‘opening’ the space to make it eminently more livable, we created a large double bedroom and comfy family room, each clad in pine and connected via a large barn door, which slides along a slick black rail. Grey painted cabinetry sets a dramatic tone. Appliances are concealed behind cabinet doors so as not to disturb clean lines.

Yes: three months. To rebuild a collapsing sunroom, refurbish a basement bedroom, tackle a large family room, install a new kitchen, create two new bathrooms and knock together two small bedrooms to create one killer master suite. Aye, it’s fair to say we had our work cut out. The kitchen, updated by Batemans in Oro Medonte, is a hand built triumph finished in rich grey with Caesarstone detailing and nickel lighting. Slick Euro styling is important to us, so we discreetly concealed fridge and freezer separates behind doors: yup, the former in the left tall tower and the latter in the right, effectively sandwiching the built-in stove and cooker.

chandelier floats proudly above providing atmosphere and adjustable illumination at the twist of a button. Upstairs, in the house bathroom, we replaced dated tile with acres of slick Caesarstone wrapped across main wall areas and around a deep soaker tub. Above this, a rain head shower cascades high-pressure jets while fixed glazing protects the room from water splash.

The focal point in the family room is the oil burning stove which sits in front of a granite clad feature zone, while the focal point in the bedroom is the large padded headboard, custom made for the project. Both rooms feature double French doors, dressed with grey plaid drapery that lead to a large sunroom rebuilt in the footprint of its near derelict predecessor. The rebirthed sunroom boasts Weather Master Plus windows with plastic memory glass that’s virtually impervious to scratches or indeed breakage, and bug screens to protect against entomological invasion. Dressed with weatherproof wicker and embellished with Robert Allen toss pillows, the sunroom is a climatic joy (even in cooler climes) thanks to the memory glass which helps insulate proceedings.

Reworking the entire ground floor, to be honest, was simple, being that the biggest job (short of inserting triple French doors to afford better lake sightlines) was removing threadbare carpet and installing a slick wooden floor. Dressed with an outsized sofa and a leather ottoman, the scene is anchored by a large grey rug that seems to float, like an island, in front of the stone built fireplace. To the other side of the room, modern black Windsor and grey leather chairs gather around an outsized wooden table while a faux antler

A whisper of plaid and shots of yellow bring this formerly lack luster space alive.

And finally: the downstairs bathroom. Accessed by another rolling barn door, its primary aesthetic is grey scale via ‘cement’ toned tile and graphite grout which enlivens basic buy subway tile . To add flair, we custom manufactured the outsized trough sink in conjunction with Dare To Be Different, a vibrant young company whose products can be sized to suit your application. The results, we hope, speak for themselves. Looking back, it’s hard to believe we made the changes described in just three short months. Sure, we have a brilliant team, but it was a monolithic transformation nonetheless, given the window of opportunity. As each other’s fussiest clients, we drove one another crazy: on a daily basis, it should be reported, we’d hone ambition… and then start from scratch. To say we were pedantic with each other – and our team, for that matter

Ensuite shower room – the compact shower room boasts a custom concrete sink. Grey slab tile and black grouted subway conspire a fresh ‘wash and go’ environment.

– is an understatement. At all times, however, we had the best interests of the cottage close to our hearts. So would we do it again? In another cottage? Could we actually deal with our ‘most demanding’ clients ever…. in a second location? Well, as a matter of fact, yes. We could. During Season TWO of ‘Colin and Justin’s Cabin Pressure,’ which starts this Spring (March 2015). And this time the drama is even bigger and the makeover even more astonishing.

Yellow accents, played across a predominantly grey scale, max’ up drama. Sectioned discreetly from the TV zone, courtesy of a massive barn door, the space is at once cozy and stylish.

Yup, get ready for our ‘slanty shanty’ in Haliburton: the worst property we have ever corrected. Hey: you’ve been warned – prepare for decorative liftoff as the Cabin Pressure lid finally pops! ‘Colin and Justin’s Cabin Pressure’ Season One, airs on The Cottage Life television network, Thursdays at 10pm. outdoorl i v i n g Not all windows are created equal. This is the message from Accurate Dorwin, a Winnipeg-based world leader in new window design and manufacture, and the originator of the fiberglass window more than 30 years ago. Accurate Dorwin products are manufactured using the brilliant simplicity of pultruded fiberglass, a material created by saturating micro strands of glass fiber with resins to make it so tough and durable that this innovative product is found in modern aircraft design and even bridges. Virtually impervious to moisture, these windows won’t bend, warp, caulk-up, corrode, rust, fade or deteriorate no matter what Mother Nature throws their way. In fact, Accurate Dorwin fiberglass windows are many times stronger than PVC. And because the entire window is made from the same material – glass – there is a consistent and unified expansion and contraction with weather. This means that unlike other materials such as wood, aluminum or PVC, there is a very low risk of seal failure, glass breakage, or frame stress. “Every window we produce is custom made for each application,” says Doug Nowlin, Director of Operations, Fiberglass Division, Accurate Dorwin Fiberglass Windows and Doors. “Unlike ‘cookie cutter’ off-the-shelf products on offer from big box retailers, the windows we make for your home are unique to your home. We measure and install each window with the understanding that a poor fit defeats the purpose of a new window. At Accurate Dorwin, we are all about the details and our performance speaks for itself,” he says, noting that they have not had to replace a single worn out fiberglass window since they invented them many years back.

By Kelly Gray

Best By Design Pultruded fiberglass is the strongest of all window materials. In fact, fiberglass frames are eight times stronger than vinyl, 20 percent stronger than aluminum and 3.5 times stronger than wood composites. These products are also more stable. According to Nowlin, they exhibit only minimal expansion and contraction in extreme temperature changes. “Fiberglass has the same coefficient of expansion as glass, that is 95 percent less than vinyl, 75 percent less than wood, and 65 percent less than aluminum,” he says. Accurate Dorwin is the only local manufacturer that specializes in fiberglass windows for the residential market. They also make them for commercial and institutional projects such as the renovation to Taché Hall at the University of Manitoba and the new Northlands Parkway Collegiate in Winkler. Behind architect and project manager decisions to place fiberglass windows in large commercial projects is their efficiency, durability, and the value equation – the same reasons that have seen homeowners turn to Accurate Dorwin for generations.

Accurate windows are available in just about any colour imaginable because the process is 100 percent custom. If you want it, you get it. Another attribute is the thin profile of fiberglass windows. Available in all formats from sliders to hung windows to casements and awnings, a fiberglass product does the job with less frame and more glass, an attribute that delivers greater view. “Our custom approach is designed for overall quality and this means a tighter fitting window and a lasting satisfaction with a product that saves homeowners money on heating and cooling and creates a more comfortable home environment,” says Nowlin, concluding that people should make the call to Accurate Dorwin to buy their last windows first.

Fiberglass windows also offer superior heat retention. Nowlin reports that Accurate Dorwin fiberglass products are simply better with U values (rate of heat loss) showing they are ahead of PVC, wood or aluminum. “This means you won’t have to retrofit down the road when you want to upgrade for energy efficiency. Also, you don’t have to worry about things like rot. These windows last and they look good doing it,” he says. Spring 2015 | STYLE MANITOBA | 61

outdoorliving Front & Focal The front door of a home has always been the focal point of the exterior. But as more house designs feature prominent garages, their doors are becoming just as important to the facade. The doors featured here for this new custombuilt home showcases this trend perfectly. Designed and installed by Overhead Door of Winnipeg, the garage doors are generously larger than the average height and width, and are made of powder-coated aluminum, custom ordered from the company’s manufacturer, with dual pane solar bronze glass. “The design goal was a uniquely modernstyled door that shines in the daylight from the exterior while lighting up the interior as the garage is used and worked in almost daily,” explains Taylor (TJ) Wallace, Marketing and Operations, Overhead Door. He adds that colour wise, the company went with a matt-black that complemented the exterior colour and didn’t overwhelm it. “It’s a great fit with a beautiful entrance planned for the future.”

Wallace notes that along with highly customized aluminum doors, they are also seeing a lot more wood-grain style steel doors being ordered by homebuilders.

The Neighbourhoods of Bridgwater in southwest Winnipeg are as unique in their settings as they are similar in their purpose. While forests, sparkling lakes and winding trails give each neighbourhood a distinct look, all have the same objective: to embrace nature. Spread out over 125 acres of open space, the Bridgwater development consists of four neighbourhoods – Bridgwater Forest, Bridgwater Lakes, Bridgwater Trails and Bridgwater Centre – all interconnected by a network of pathways and sidewalks.

Neighbourhoods designed to embrace nature B y D onna M inkus

Featuring homes that showcase innovative architecture and traditional styles, the Bridgwater development continues to lead the city in new home construction for the fifth consecutive year. Bridgwater Forest was the first and is the most established of the Bridgwater neighbourhoods. “The homes in Bridgwater Forest are interspersed throughout 25 acres of mature forest, so there is definitely an established feel to the neighbourhood,” says Dwayne Rewniak, Acting Executive Director, Housing Delivery/Land Development, Manitoba Housing. “We tried to maintain and preserve the forest as much as possible and incorporate it into the development,” Rewniak states, adding that a vast network of walkways encourage strolls through the forest. “Envisioning this neighbourhood, we wanted to create an environment where residents can walk, cycle and enjoy nature,” he says. Started in 2007, Bridgwater Forest is now over 90 percent complete, with 1,300 occupied homes – 1,000 single-family homes and 300 multi-family units, which consist of apartments and townhomes. Less than 100 homes remain available for occupancy.

“The majority of our showhomes are in Bridgwater Lakes right now,” he says, “and all of them are featured in the Parade of Homes. So anyone who wants to see the range of homes in this neighbourhood just has to go to the Parade of Homes to check them out.” The newest residential neighbourhood Bridgwater Trails - will offer the largest number of single-family homes and multi-family units In the Bridgwater neighbourhood, with plans calling for 1,040 single-family and over 1,000 multi-family units. Construction of 60 single-family homes started in 2014, and they are scheduled for completion in 2015. “Our first Bridgwater Trails homeowner will be moving in this year,” Rewniak says, adding the first new Bridgwater Trail showhomes will open this fall.

Plans for Bridgwater Trails also include two new pedestrian bridges and a fountain. Progress continues at Bridgwater Centre, the retail and commercial hub of the Bridgwater development. Bridgewater Centre is designed to provide convenient access to shops and services, making the town centre a meeting place where residents can get together and visit over coffee, Rewniak suggests. Red River Co-op, the first commercial venture at Bridgwater Centre, is scheduled to open a gas bar and car wash this spring; and Hilton Homes has started to construct single-attached townhomes, Rewniak explains, adding the long range plan is for 1,000 multi-family units at Bridgwater Centre. “We’re seeing activity on both the commercial and residential front, and that’s exciting,” he

says. “Our intention has always been to start off gradually, and balance the commercial with the residential development.” Future plans for commercial services include a grocer, pharmacy, bank and cafés. Rewniak expects to be in a position to elaborate on those ventures fairly soon. Like the town centre, the Neighbourhoods of Bridgwater will continue to evolve, he says. Plans include expansion of the trail systems and more pathways. When complete, 80 kilometres of walkways will connect all neighbourhoods. “We will be expanding the amenities that are currently available in Bridgwater Forest and Bridgwater Lakes into the newer neighbourhoods,” he points out, adding each neighbourhood will have access to pedestrian pathways that converge at town centre - the heart of the Bridgwater development.

homes and neighbourhoods

Homes in Bridgwater Lakes are built alongside three beautiful lakes. Construction started in 2010, and this neighbourhood has been most active for new home builds, with 700 homes occupied to date. Bridgwater Lakes has the largest complement of single-family homes of all the neighbourhoods of Bridgwater, Rewniak points out.

Design & Detail Whether you have two legs or four, the fetching design of Southwynn Homes’ 41 Deer Pointe Drive, which is replete with innovative detailing, is a prime example of the custom homebuilder’s ability to create exactly what clients want. The owners of the pre-build home are dog lovers, and as such, worked with Southwynn to create elements that fit for them and their furry friends. The five-inch plank laminate flooring is scratch proof, while the dedicated doggie area / mudroom features a vacuum outlet for quick cleanup and a dog shower. And finally, a stylish front courtyard was created as a dog run. Not all the details are for the dogs though. The foyer boasts innovative styling where lofts were constructed between the trusses giving the ceiling depth and contrast - a first for this homebuilder. A custom-built over-sized set of maple barn doors separate the foyer from the living / dining area, which has a lofted ceiling ranging from 10 to 15 feet. The layout offers ample windows and light, and a four-season sunroom that boasts a view of the pond. The kitchen also provides an abundance of light with eye-level five-foot wide and 20-inch high windows, which run between the upper

and lower cabinets. These connect to a larger window to the right of the kitchen, creating an L-shaped effect. Some of the same innovative detailing, such as the foyer ceiling, has been carried over to Southwynn Homes’ Spring Parade of Homes showhome at 22 Tillbrooke Place in Charleswood.

Branching Out Beyond While you can still see some of Discovery Homes’ great houses within city limits, you can now move beyond the Perimeter if you’re looking for their custom designed homes. Recently the company began extending their building offerings to clients who own their own lots. They got their first taste of country building in La Salle with homes in Kingswood South and Prairie View Lakes, which is where one of the company’s showhomes for the Spring Parade of Homes is located. The large bungalow at 44 Fourth Avenue is one of Discovery’s standard models, and offers a traditional, family-friendly design. The 1,996 sq. ft. home features lofty ceilings and ample windows open to the country view. The kitchen boasts a ceramic tile backsplash, a large angled island and maple cabinets, which mirror the wood around the gas fireplace in the living room. The main floor is finished off with a den, two large bedrooms, and the master bedroom, which features an ensuite with tiled tub and shower.

Back within city limits, the company continues to build in Crocus Meadows and Bridgwater Lakes. In Bridgwater Lakes, at 119 Lakebend Road, the mix of traditional style with modern accents makes it a unique showhome. The kitchen cabinetry features classic shaker-style doors in white, in combination with a contemporary

cooking range hood, glossy tiles, and metal light fixtures. Other special features of the home include an under-mount tub with a Caesarstone top, a three-sided fireplace dividing the great room and dining area, and a large, finished lower level.

The Choice is Yours Who would have thought it was possible to live inside the Perimeter, yet pay lower property taxes in East St. Paul? Countryside Crossing has made this a reality, a new home development located just off Henderson Highway close to city conveniences, but located in the quiet of country. “This is a new home development where the choices are all yours,” says Mark Penner of Royal LePage Prime Real Estate. He reports that at Countryside, people select the lot and then select the builder they want. “This differs from other sites where homebuilders purchase the lot themselves and build what they want. Here you can buy your lot from a great selection, get your home drawings together, apply for a permit and start building almost right away,” he says. Penner reports that the project is now complete with all roads and playgrounds in place, and the finishing touches to landscaping coming this spring. He notes that lot sales and home construction have been strong. In fact, of the 154 lots on offer there are less than 60 still available.

“These include pond front lots,” says Penner, adding that properties are all deep estate-sized lots, perfect for larger footprint homes and country-sized garages.

Light & Airy Design It may not be ocean side, but the ambiance of the sea prevails in Warkentin Custom Homes’ spring showhome. Located in Countryside Crossing at 313 Saddleridge Lane, this spring’s offering is set on the creek, and brings together light hues of blue and airy elements for that beach feel. The exterior features a timber framed porch, cultured stone, and sandy-toned acrylic stucco - a more soft, neutral mixture of elements. Inside the 1,917-square-foot bungalow continues to feature soothing hues of ocean blues, light oil-finished, wide-plank engineered oak floors, and large windows. A two-sided fireplace inset in a stacked floor to ceiling stone wall features a walnut barn board mantel reminiscent of an old pier, and separates the great room from a four-season sunroom. From the sunroom garden doors allow access to a large deck, which overlooks the creek. The deck runs the length of the back of the house, and can also be accessed off the master bedroom, which along with a walk-in closet features an ensuite with free standing tub, and a ceramic tile shower with glass door.

The large, galley-style kitchen keeps working with fair-coloured woods boasting maple ecowood cabinets, an island with cream quartz countertops, and cream tiled backsplash. The finished lower level features an additional two bedrooms, wet bar with wine fridge, a

games area, and a family room with a built-in entertainment centre. This bright space can be seen in this year’s spring Parade of Homes, along with Warkentin’s other offering at 5 Campbell Drive in Stonewall.

Built With You in Mind The mark of a true custom homebuilder is taking a homeowner’s ideas and making them reality. No pre-set designs; just dreams. K. Streu Homes did just that with 11 Tielmann Drive in East St. Paul. The homeowner wanted a contemporary space with vast open spaces. Kurt and Heather Streu achieved that by first incorporating 20-foot ceilings, large amounts of windows and glass doors, as well as light woods and walls to reflect light. The kitchen was designed to be the central hub for the family. The multi-level eating island, which seats five, features under cabinet lighting, a wine rack, and a large professional grade sink. The glass and stainless steel backsplash complements the high-gloss white, motorized cabinets, which open at the touch of a finger. Just off the kitchen’s eating area, 12-foot glass doors lead on to a large deck with matte metal railings and glass inserts - the perfect place to lounge and overlook the tall trees. A unique corner wet bar, with inset wave-patterned, ceramic tile, helps visually break the opening dining area from the living room.

Just a few steps up from the living room is the master suite, tucked up on it’s own level. The plush carpeted room features large windows, while smaller ones dot the hallway to the walkin closet. The vast ensuite keeps the open concept flowing with a glass shower featuring a wood-like tile surround, dual sinks, and ample walnut cabinetry.

Three more bedrooms, and two bathrooms can be found on the lower level, a living space for the homeowners’ three children.

Through the company’s 3D rendering technology, homeowners can take a virtual walk through the proposed space so they are secure in knowing what they’ve designed is what they’ll get. The building process can be stressful, and simple things like a visual can lessen the anxiety of choices.

The building experience with Pine Creek is also pleasurable since clients deal with the same person start to finish - just another perk offered by this true custom homebuilder.

K.Streu Homes continues to build dreams this spring with their newest showhome at 13 Willowside Bend in Countryside Crossing.

Diversified Design homes and neighbourhoods

That saying “jack of all trades, master of none” certainly does not apply to Pine Creek Homes. While they are known for their timber-framed homes, the company’s expertise and portfolio is as varied and diversified as their clientele. The family-based company, who boast over 30 years in the custom homebuilding market, offers a wide variety of project styles ranging from rustic to contemporary to ultra modern. They build cottages, new homes, and additions to existing buildings - projects that are more structurally in-depth and require an experienced hand. They also create homes of all sizes, from 1,000 to 10,000 square feet. The reason Pine Creek Homes is so varied is because not every customer is the same. Everyone has a different idea of how they envision their home, and the company works with each individual to achieve their dream. Clients can certainly draw from the company’s expertise when it comes to the look, feel, and style of the home, but they are also encouraged to gather up their own ideas, what inspires them, and bring it to the table.

Sunshine, space and shopping A little bit country, a little bit city, Oak Bluff West is much more than you’d expect B y A dam D ooley

From spacious backyards for children to play in, to stylish homes that catch hours of sunlight, Oak Bluff West offers a feeling of calm you can’t get inside the Perimeter Highway. Located in the town of Oak Bluff just southwest of Winnipeg, Oak Bluff West provides quiet country living less than 10 minutes from Kenaston Common.

Condos with space to spread out In addition to single-family homes, Oak Bluff West features a popular new series of bungalow condos by Randall Homes. The units are being snapped up by buyers, especially people 55+ who enjoy the 1,500-square-foot floor plan, hotel-like bathrooms and choice of finishes. The large lots also give residents a convenient set up for entertaining, both inside and out.

The units are designed to impress with an open concept layout, ninefoot-ceilings and lots of sunlight. “There is nothing on the market like them,” says Viktoria Fazekas, representing Randall Homes with RE/MAX. “Not for the price and not at this quality. If you’re considering this style of condo, you have to look in Oak Bluff West.”

Nature at your doorstep Beyond the beautiful homes, community members can enjoy

carefully planned natural spaces designed to make it easy to enjoy the outdoors. One destination already available is a naturalized wetland area complete with native grasses and walking trails that lead residents on a scenic stroll. A new mini-playground has quickly become a popular destination for young families and there are many more recreational spaces to come. Vogan says Qualico Communities has been purposefully incorporating wetlands into its developments for more than a decade. They serve the dual purpose of handling surges of water from spring melts and rain storms while creating a habitat for birds and animals.

“A walk through a naturalized wetland is more exciting than a walk around a traditional city lake,” says Vogan. You may also be lucky to spot heron, blackbirds or other fowl and wildlife along the trails that run through the community’s established wetlands.

Activities for all ages Along with the many opportunities to get active independently, residents also benefit from a host of organized activities in the established community of Oak Bluff. There are programs for everyone through the Oak Bluff Recreation Centre, including thriving sports programs for kids, adult exercise classes and a very active seniors’ committee. With more than 800 new homes set to be built in the community, and more than 130 lots already sold, Oak Bluff West is growing quickly. Bungalow condos in particular are going fast with few remaining. Participating builders in Oak Bluff West include Artista Homes, Paradigm Custom Homes, Parkhill Homes, Randall Homes, Somerville Design Homes, Sterling Homes and Ventura Custom Homes.

“All the condos have full basements, backyards and decks,” says Michael Dubienski a RE/MAX sales associate representing Randall Spring 2015 | STYLE MANITOBA | 73

homes and neighbourhoods

“Homebuyers in the community run the gamut from young families to empty nesters,” says Eric Vogan, vice-president of community development for Qualico Communities. “Oak Bluff West offers easy access to amenities, but has the big advantage of space.”

Homes. “In most condos in the city you turn off the street into a garage. In Oak Bluff West you have double garages and wide driveways that park up to four cars.”

FLOORING & CARPETS

Designed for Life B y K e l ly G r ay Parkhill Homes is well known as a builder that creates stunning open plan homes that meet the needs of a modern lifestyle. The property at 10 Orchard Gate in Oak Bluff West is a perfect example.

“There is also a fully developed lower level complete with media area,” she says, remarking further

that the lower level sports lots of large windows to deliver a feel that is anything but basement. “People also want to be organized”, she notes. “With 10 Orchard Gate we deliver with a large array of storage solutions throughout the home. People just have more things today and we build new home designs with this in mind. In this home we built walk-in pantries and closets, and lots of cupboards and storage in places where they are most useful. Even the garage is huge, a perfect accompaniment to country-style living where people might want to have an ATV, snow-

mobile or other recreational vehicle at the ready for the trails that are close at hand,” she says, noting that Oak Bluff West is just 10 minutes north-east of Winnipeg close to all the outdoor amenities at Birds Hill Provincial Park. The bottom line is that this Parkhill Home is built for living. Whether it’s the two-sided fireplace, the rich beauty of the hardwoods that extend throughout the space or the sumptuous ensuite, this home is made to help people live life as they like it. Backing onto gorgeous wetlands and green space, the Parkhill Orchard Gate showhome offers nearly 1900 sq. ft. in a three-bedroom bungalow design with a three-car garage, and is sited on an ample 84 ft. by 140 ft. country-sized lot. From the curb, the property shows a blend of stucco and cultured stone. Inside, the design is wide open and airy with lofty ceilings and huge windows. At the back a massive deck overlooks a vista of green.

“This property hits all the right buttons and it does so with tremendous style,” says marketer Lori Thorsteinson, Sales Manager of Parkhill Homes and Owner/Broker of Loren Realty. For example, she points to the quality of the kitchen layout where one long wall offers all the cupboards, the solid surface countertops and the stainless steel appliances. Here, a well-placed island offers a nice break between the living and dining rooms where massive windows open the entire area to the beauty of the outdoor setting.

Sage Creek -

Designed to make the most of home & community

In Sage Creek, every detail counts.

Milne says the builder’s emphasis on thoughtful design ensures homeowners can make the most of their opportunities for outdoor living. “You have to look at how people live today and how they use all their spaces — including outside,” says Milne, adding that homes with smaller yards now have more appeal than ever. “People want to be able to entertain, use their barbecue, and maybe have room for their children to play - or grass for their pet. At the same time they don’t want a lot of property to look after.” All these great features make the new Luxury Laned homes a great choice. They each feature a private, fenced backyard that’s nestled

Sage Creek properties that back onto trails with native grasses and naturalized wetlands are also a great hit, because they offer easy access to public areas. “You can customize your space and enjoy some privacy, but still have the benefit of all those beautiful public areas. It really offers the best of both.” “These past few seasons the wetlands and native grasses have really begun to mature,” notes Vogan of Qualico Communities. “This means that they’re not only more visually appealing, they also are home to a wide array of fowl and wildlife species, and serve as a natural drainage and water filtration system for the area,” he explains.

Since it’s a community with a strong focus on outdoor living, Sage Creek is intentionally designed to be as accessible to pedestrians, as it is to cars. “With the comprehensive trail system that joins all parts of Sage Creek, it’s a community that’s connected in many ways,” says Eric Vogan. “The large network of paths and trails makes getting places on foot not only faster and more convenient, but also creates more opportunities for an active lifestyle.” However, Vogan also keeps a keen eye on the big picture — how the community is forming as a whole. “Sage Creek is really coming into its own,” he adds, pointing out that the residents’ association is already very active. “They’re working with the school board for the 2016 opening of the new

school and are also fundraising for a playground,” says Vogan. “It’s their neighbourhood, and they’re doing a great job of bringing it to life.” According to Vogan, “Sage Creek also has great community spirit. There are many events throughout the year where people can connect and actually get to know each other.” With a wide selection of housing styles — from condos and single-family dwellings, to large custom builds and compact courtyard homes — Sage Creek is a neighbourhood that is deliberately diverse. “That means we can accommodate homeowners at any stage of their lives,” says Vogan. “We have young and growing families, and we also appeal to professionals and retirees. There really are options for everyone.”

Liam Milne of Hearth Homes knows that when home buyers fall in love with a home they don’t always notice the smaller things. It’s the total effect that matters. “Paying attention to all of the little details really adds up,” says Milne, explaining why so much care goes into each element of a home. “We think about how someone might live in each house and start from there. Then we take another look to see how we can take things yet a bit further.” In the end, Milne says this approach results in a unique and distinctive home. “Each home becomes a total package that works together seamlessly.”

Let it Pop When you step into an H. Albers Builders Ltd. showhome, you’re always going to see an impact item - whether it’s as large as a staggered brick accent wall, or something as subtle as rounded, wood brackets, there’s always something to catch the eye. The company’s latest showhome in Sage Creek has those elements that pop. The 1,650-square-foot bungalow’s kitchen is a prime example. With almost a retro vibe, the high-gloss white cabinets, island, and tiled backsplash stand out against the dark granite countertops and walnut trim. But what really makes the mood unique are the two vertical red lights flanking the stovetop for a bright flash of colour, paired perfectly with the crimson pendant lights. The kitchen opens up to the great room, boasting a large window, and custom built walnut cabinets. Ledges run like ribbons through the tiles surrounding the fireplace the same tiles are found on the exterior of the home, making for material continuity.

Along with a large eating area, the main floor also hosts a laundry room with sink and cabinetry, two bedrooms, and a master suite with a walk-in closet and ensuite. Here guests will find dual sinks, granite countertops, and

a custom shower featuring a rain showerhead with slide bar.

Just up off the main floor is a large loft - an ideal flex room that features a large wraparound deck on top of the garage.

The walkout lower level is home to a wet bar, complete with mirror TV, a games area, seating space, fireplace, and an additional bedroom.

The master bedroom features a large ensuite comprised of double vanities with built in mirror TVs, a shower and free standing tub, while two additional bedrooms and a laundry area finish off the main floor.

Along with their offering in South Pointe, Artista Homes boasts seven showhomes at the Spring 2015 Parade of Homes in developments such as Bridgwater Lakes, Bridgwater Forest, Sage Creek, and Oak Bluff.

H. Albers Builders Ltd.’s next showhome is set to be open in mid-2015.

Luxury Life homes and neighbourhoods

The unique use of materials at 11 Trailside Crescent in South Pointe is just one reason why Artista Homes continues to have awardwinning designs. The exterior combination of pine wood siding, commercial cinder blocks and glass doors for the three-car garage sets this home apart. The same material mix flows inside, where visitors will find the paneling stacking its way up the wall and onto the vaulted ceiling in the living room; the cinder blocks make for great pillars throughout the house, as well as a surround for the master bedroom’s three-sided fireplace; and a floor-to-ceiling glass column houses a spinning wine rack in the center of the entertaining area on the main floor. With over 4,000 square feet of living space, the home is bright thanks to high ceilings, light hardwoods, and ample windows. The chef-style kitchen hosts light maple cabinets, a large island, prep sink, and a wall of pantry towers with stainless steel doors. Just off to the side is a secondary sitting area that offers views of the backyard and the lake.

Luxury Lane Quality, not quantity - that seems to be what many homebuyers are looking for when they come to Water Lily Lane in Sage Creek. Developed by Hearth Homes and Qualico, this exclusive streetscape of luxury homes goes small on footprint, but big on quality. Lots are kept to a size that would require little maintenance on the homeowners’ part, but still allows for a three-car garage, and bungalows ranging from 1,400 to 1,600 square feet that feature a minimum of two bedrooms, a large entertaining space, and ample kitchen. Inside you’ll find elements that are usually considered upgrades, but come standard in the luxury lane. Granite countertops, deluxe laminate, vaulted ceilings, and an alfresco terrace in the backyard ensures people will never have to worry about taking their home to the next level of quality - because it’s already there.

The luxury lane is certainly hitting all the right notes with homebuyers. 3 Water Lily Lane is the last home available in that area, and will be open for the spring Parade of Homes to give

people a sense of the partners’ next project Vireo Lane. Much like Water Lily, Vireo will have varied designs from classic two-storeys to

contemporary bungalows, featuring high-quality exterior materials (no vinyl siding here), and the upscale standard features such as three-car garage, landscape packages, granite, and luxury flooring.

Easy Living Excitement B y K elly G ray

“Sales expectations have been continually exceeded, thanks to the demand, the location and the ability of our homebuilders to create a wide variety of wonderful home plans,” says David Borger, Vice President of Land Development with Ladco, the company behind this multi-phase community found between Waverley Street and Kenaston Blvd near the University of Manitoba in the city’s burgeoning south end. South Pointe’s initial phase of some 1,400 lots was started several years back and is now a maturing community filled with model homes, tree lined streets and parklands. “ It has been the full slate of attributes that have attracted residents who are from a wide range of ages,

ethnic mixes and occupations. This has created a fully blended community,” says Borger, pointing out that their plans are to continue this winning formula as they ready the heavy equipment and trades for Phase II.

classroom. The Division suggests that the new school will create an integral hub to the social life of the community, just as schools all over Winnipeg are an important focus for families and students.

Helping to make Phase II an easy choice is the recent completion of road works that provides even better connectivity to the community. Now, with Kenaston completed to the Perimeter the route home from downtown, the University of Manitoba or the shopping districts on Kenaston is fast and effortless. It also opens up the opportunities of about 2,000 new lots coming to the 640 acres of lands to the west of Kenaston in Phase II. Currently, Ladco’s crews are completing the initial infrastructure with new homes expected to start rising towards the end of 2015.

According to Michael Carruthers, Manager Land Development, Ladco, people will also find crews putting the finishing touches on a multi-family offering that will see townhouses rise this summer. “We are also working on the final stages of our park development, a 10-acre site where families will see the completion of about two kilometers of walking trails, a new playground and a recreation field,” says Carruthers.

An important attribute to the neighbourhood will be the new school planned for next year. According to Pembina Trails School Division, the Kindergarten to Grade 8 facility will service up to 800 students and offer 74 preschool spaces in a building that is expected to be almost 8000 sq. meters. As yet unnamed, a call for tenders for the new centre located on an 8.8-acre site at Tim Sale Drive and Waverley St. was released this past October. Inside, families can expect to find facilities for special needs, resource centre and library, music room, Phys Ed and health facility, an outdoor learning area as well as a practical arts

“As well, we are in the preliminary stages of our commercial development,” he adds, commenting that they are in the very early stages of planning and will have more to report as their planning progresses. Here, David Borger concludes that it is the total package that has created the buzz around South Pointe. Now, with Phase II coming on stream, the excitement will continue with location, services, and stunning new home properties that have made South Pointe one of Winnipeg’s most sought after addresses in residential real estate.

The perception of space can be highly affected by something as simple as light. Maric Homes’ 100 Lake Bend in Bridgwater Lakes sought to experiment with the interaction of those two elements, and how it can alter design and experience.

Up that glass staircase you’ll find the master bedroom - a private oasis separated from the

other bedrooms. The master bedroom has an abundance of large windows with double barn door entry into a built-in walk-in closet. The clothing storage is completely custom milled and features a full-size seating area. The space then flows into a spa-like ensuite, which features a double sink vanity with high-gloss cabinets, quartz counter tops, freestanding soaker tub, and custom tile surround shower with exposed shower fixtures.

Rather than keeping the staircase as strictly utilitarian, Maric made it the centerpiece of the home, adjacent to the kitchen where most of the traditional family’s traffic is. The highgloss kitchen features Thermador appliances, pure white quartz countertops with full-quartz backsplash, and white and caramel wood grain cabinets. The two-toned, 16-foot island is partially comprised of a long quartz counter with a built-in 36-inch induction cook top, as well as a six-foot walnut integrated tabletop with walnut waterfall reaching to the marble floor. Maric used bold signifiers to delineate between rooms on the main floor. The dining room and great room are separated by a stunning two-way fireplace that boasts maple detailing and marble-styled tile around both sides. The great room is spacious and houses the

The interior of this two-storey home is a full expression of interaction between light and space. A dazzling custom designed staircase is the fulcrum of this design. Created from steel, glass, and solid maple, it is the anchor that connects the home’s main floor areas. A stunning silhouette of the staircase is visible through three full storeys of glass on the rear wall, creating continuous, unbroken visibility of the giant prairie skies, adjacent lake and walking bridge.

custom-built maple entertainment unit with four freestanding pillar-style cabinets with glass inserts and lighting, along with a TV wallmounted in the center. Off the great room large glass doors take you out to one of two decks off the main level; the other is a secondary space off the kitchen - the perfect area for entertaining or adding a barbecue.

Along with two additional bedrooms, the second level hosts a main bathroom with double-sink vanity, one-piece tub/shower, and the kids’ very own stackable washer/dryer. Family space was a priority in this home, allowing Maric to create functional details like an open loft area next to both kid’s bedrooms on the upper floor, perfect for a games room or study space. The fully finished lower level is an entertainment wonder. A professional-grade, high-definition golf simulator is installed in the lower level, which could also be easily converted to show movies. This feature is adjacent to a giant wet bar, fireplace, large television, and walkout covered deck area. The lower level also has potential for multigenerational use, with an additional bedroom and private four-piece bathroom

Along with many other valued suppliers, Springhill Lumber integrated their high-quality framing package, and various other building materials in order to create the light and space of 100 Lake Bend, aiding Maric’s finished vision. Maric takes great pride in providing clients with an exceptional home building experience and much of that ability is founded on the strength of the partnerships they have formed with both suppliers and clients.

Home Insurance 101 Comprehensive coverage takes care of all risks on building and contents, but often comes with a higher price tag.

While home insurance is one of the most important things you can buy to protect your greatest asset, it can be a very daunting experience. CAA Manitoba Insurance provides an overview of what you can expect when it comes time to obtain or renew your policy. When obtaining home insurance, be prepared for a broker to ask specific questions including: • How old is your home? • Is the wiring and plumbing original or has it been replaced? • How old is your roof? • How old are the furnace and hot water tank? • Do you have a wood or pellet stove? • Do you run a business out of your home? Factors outside of your home can also affect the cost of insurance, such as your distance to the nearest fire hall. On the upside, insurance companies often offer discounts for: • Alarms (fire, burglary) • Sump pump • Being mortgage-free • Being a non-smoker • Being claim-free for a certain amount of time • High credit score

Broad or Comprehensive? The next step is selecting your coverage. There are two main forms of coverage: broad and comprehensive. Broad provides all-risk coverage on your home (building) for loss or damages unless excluded in the policy. It also covers named perils on your contents; only those perils specifically stated in the policy are covered.

A simple life folly can explain the difference between these coverages. You spill red wine on your wall-to-wall carpet. Under both options, you’d be covered because the carpeting is part of the house. But if you spill that same glass of wine on your expensive area rug, which is considered contents, only a comprehensive package would allow you to claim that loss. Homeowners might be inclined to lean towards broad coverage, thinking mishaps rarely happen and the price of a comprehensive package may be too great. But don’t be swayed by cost when looking at insurance; the peace of mind it gives is invaluable. Still, insurance is not designed to cover every possible loss. Talk to your broker and read the policy to understand what you are covered for and what exclusions may apply. Right at home in a scenic neighbourhood Pritchard Farm Southlands Village Condos

Some places just feel right. For Joel Neufeld of Irwin Homes - one of the builders in Pritchard Farm Southlands Village (PFSV) this special community has been one of those places from the very start.

New visitors to the neighbourhood are initially struck by the scenic views and lovely streetscapes in this idyllic community. This may be partly because the overall quality of the custom bungalow style condos brings a strong sense of luxury and balance to the community. It’s also the result of the builders - Arlt and Maric, along with Irwin- who each take a personalized approach to working with their clients to create homes that reflect their owners’ personality and style. “Even though they are all bungalow style condos, you won’t ever see that ‘cookiecutter’ look in this neighbourhood,” says Neufeld. Neufeld describes the process of designing the perfect home as a collaboration between builder and

With decades of experience, each builder in PFSV has a wide variety of successful plans to draw from, they can alter an existing plan to customize it to the buyer’s specifications, or they can help a home buyer create a completely fresh design that’s all their own. “It’s exciting to see what the client wants, and no two are the same,” Neufeld adds. “We make this part easy and fun.”

gardening for 2015, so it’s anticipated that the already lush plantings will make an even bigger splash this summer. “We’ve set the stage, but it’s up to them now to bring it to the next level,” says Vogan. “It will be exciting to see where they take it,” says Vogan. Pritchard Farm Southlands Village is proving popular with many different demographics of homeowners, which is likely why this one-of-a-kind community is nearly 80% sold. Comments Neufeld, “This is a neighbourhood that residents are very proud of.”

While every luxury home built here is custom, there’s one thing all Pritchard Farm Southlands Village residents have in common: they’re ready for the freedom that condo life brings. While this scenic neighbourhood features attractive singlefamily, detached bungalow homes, the year-round yard service provides homeowners with a chance to enjoy freedom from yard work and shoveling. “Many residents come from nearby areas,” says Eric Vogan of Qualico Communities. “Keeping up with a large property can be a lot of Spring 2015 | STYLE MANITOBA | 89

Providing affordable entry into one of Winnipeg’s most popular new neighbourhoods, StreetSide Developments brings the best of location and value to their Bridgwater Forest North Condominiums. Positioned at the gate of the landmark community, the condos at 25 Bridgeland Drive are across the street from forested walking paths leading to the stunning lakes and parks that have attributed to the neighbourhood’s immense popularity. “With Bridgwater Forest Condominiums, we have been able to deliver the excitement of modern interior design alongside the beauty of nature,” says StreetSide’s Manager Marty Maykut. The prime location close to hubs like the University of Manitoba and the Kenaston shopping area have driven the demand for StreetSide to

commence construction and sales on the third and final phase of the 160 unit development. With just a handful of move-in suites remaining, the release of the 63-unit Phase III brings with it new and improved floor plans, as well as previously sold-out favourites from Phase I. “When you purchase a Phase III suite in the presale period, you have the unique opportunity to buy a suite at its base price and meet with our Design Consultant at StreetSide to custom select all of your interior finishes,” Marty says, noting that a full suite of stainless steel appliances is included in the base purchase price. Layouts are spacious and open with design features that have become a hallmark of one of the city’s premier condo developers with a proven track record of success. Building condos for over three

decades in Winnipeg under the Qualico umbrella (first as Qualico multi-family before adopting the StreetSide name), StreetSide Developments takes credit for many of the city’s most groundbreaking condominiums, including a total of four separate developments in Bridgwater Forest alone with more to come in the area. This experience allows StreetSide to offer suites such as those in Phase III at incredible value. Starting at just $240,900 including net GST and heated underground parking for a two-bedroom suite close to 1000 square feet, buyers don’t need to sacrifice their wish list for both location and quality. Of the selection of two and three bedroom condominiums available, all benefit from the environmental features showcased at Bridgwater Forest North. Boasting PowerSmart features such as energy efficient windows and a ground water geothermal system that heats and cools all fresh air in the building, the result is cost savings for owners. The geothermal system consists of an open well system circulating water from the aquifer below site. “This will significantly reduce the costs of heating and cooling for the life of the building,” Marty remarks. Suites themselves will be equipped with their own single package heating and air conditioning units

that are housed in a sound insulated stud-framed closet to keep everything nice and quiet. And when it comes to quiet, residents will find an in-suite calm, thanks to double wood stud wall construction with insulation, and R12 sound batt in stud cavity. Even the floors are quiet with construction that features Engineered Floor Joists R22 batt insulation between floors, gypcrete floor topping, resilient channel, and 5/8” drywall. With framing well underway this winter in a heat controlled environment, construction is on schedule to have Phase III suites ready for possession as early as November this year, a welcome surprise to many buyers used to stories of multi-year waits in the new condo world. The company’s passion for hitting target possession dates and making sure their homeowners get to move in sooner is just one of the many reasons condo buyers choose to buy a StreetSide condo, and Bridgwater Forest North is no different. Sales Agent Cayliegh Onofrychuk of Rancho Realty Services concludes, “It’s never been a better time to get into this amenity rich area.” She invites people to visit www.bridgwatercondos.com for more information on how they can make the move up to a StreetSide condominium in Winnipeg’s most sought after neighbourhood.

Sit on Style B y C arly P eters

Every room needs that one anchor piece from which all other décor is set around or inspired by. Sectionals are quickly becoming that focal point for living rooms, sitting areas and basements, thanks to their versatility in both structure and style. “The great thing about sectionals is that many styles are modular, and you can build them to the size you want,” explains Leilei Li, category manager for Dufresne. “If you have a big home with a large open space, sectionals create a nice frame or break in the room by cornering off that area.” The spacious seating arrangement also offers families ample room to snuggle together in one space, or the perfect setting for multiple guests. On the flip-side, people looking to downsize their living space can also benefit from a sectional, which is easier to incorporate into small or limited space. Seating is about fitting the customer’s lifestyle, so along with in-house sets such as the large casual Pursuit collection, or the more compact warm walnut Jennifer collection, the store can help clients create exactly what they want with the exclusive My Custom program. It all starts with selecting a fit for your space - how many pieces you’d like, what configuration will fit your room - followed by selecting a frame that meets the desired style, along with complementing arm rests, leg styles, and wood finishes. You can even select the comfort level of the seating from plush, medium, or firm. Next pick a fabric that brings your sectional to life. With over 800 fabrics and leathers, ranging from soft textured linen to high-quality leather, creativity is endless. Li states sectionals in neutral tones, such as white or gray, lend themselves to be a platform for accent pieces such as bright pillows, or chic throws which can be changed season to season without much cost. Before creating their own unique pieces, Li says it’s a good idea for clients to come down to the showroom to see and sit on the store’s selection of sectionals before they design. Dufresne’s Ellice showroom hosts over 60 sets of sofas, love seats, chairs and sectionals, and with spring just around the corner, fresh new seating options will add more possibilities. Designing a Solution

The name Mondetta is synonymous with fine material and meticulous design in fashion, so creating an extension of the brand that lends the same ideology to interior design was a natural progression.

Mondetta Interior Solutions (MIS), launched in 2014, has been transforming spaces in retail, commercial, corporate, hospitality, and residential applications in Manitoba and worldwide. Their philosophy is simple - design is a solution to a problem.

“Interior design is based on client’s requirements,” states Roman Rozumnyj, principal, MIS, who has over 26 years of international experience in interior design and project management. “We extrapolate their needs within the planning and design processes, then refine the concepts with meticulous attention to detail. The result is a solution to a comprehensive series of questions.” MIS boasts an efficient team of interior designers and partners that can create a clean, sophisticated, modern space with enduring aesthetic. The company’s experience ensures customers will see their space in a way they never thought possible, and that will continue to impress for years to come. “Trends have a limited timeframe. We like to focus on timeless design,” he explains. This rings true in their residential work, some of which can be seen along Wellington Crescent and in Tuxedo. Rozumnyj muses residential design poses an interesting challenge because one must create a space specific to that person, or family, as they will be residing in it for years to come. “At the end of the day, design is design, whether it’s retail, corporate, or residential. The space has to flow, the design must resonate with the client, and it must accomplish the solution you set out to achieve.” Select MIS projects can be viewed at: www.mondettainteriorsolutions.com

design&decor Contemporary Italian Style

People have always looked to Europe for design inspiration whether it be fashion, or in this case, furniture. Crafted in Italy, the Versilia collection from Alf Italia is set in real Koto grey stained wood veneer with a high-gloss, UV finish. “The grain in this collection has a nice distinct look,” states Riccardo Mandarano of Contessa Home Decor / Contessa Fine Furniture. While the finish may be a bit different, he says the inlay is typical Italian. “Italians like to play with their wood grains. You’ll see the inlay will go one direction on the left side of the dresser, and then it will go the other way on the right,” explains Mandarano. “It gives it that extra detail.” The brushed chrome accents on the dresser, which carries into the legs on the chest and bed frame, offsets the high-gloss material for a contemporary look. Nightstands feature full extension drawers, which allows for complete access to the entire drawer for more usable space, and a seamless front finish. The fashionable bed frame can also be turned functional with add-on under bed storage, or ordered as a European bed system, which doesn’t require a box spring, just the mattress. The double-panel headboard also features an optional lighting track, giving it that extra sense of style. Versilia can be seen at Contessa’s showroom at 103-3000 McGillivray Blvd.

Automated Window Coverings

Home automation is where it’s at, and blinds are certainly connecting to this trend. Operated by either a remote or app downloaded onto a smartphone, users can open and close their blinds with one touch. The app also allows for time controlled sequences, such as having the blinds automatically go up at 7 a.m. and then close again at 9 p.m. By controlling the amount of light (UV rays), it allows greater energy efficiency in your home, keeping outside temperatures out, and inside temperatures in. This can cut your energy bill by 20 percent, as well as keeping damaging UV rays from fading flooring and furniture. Superblinds continues to be the leader in fashion and functionality. With companies like Lutron and Hunter Douglas, they have taken blind automation to the next level. With fullhome automation, you are now able to connect these products into your home security network, allowing peace of mind when out for the day, or on vacation for a month. You can operate your blinds in Winnipeg, or while on a beach in Mexico. With advances in technology, automated blinds are essentially soundless. In what used to be the cost of a room, consumers can now equip their whole home with automated window coverings and light control. design&decor Featured Flames

Nothing says comfort like the warm, dancing flame of a fireplace on a chilly Manitoba day. Dimplex’s Opti-myst® technology offers the look and feel of real without the smoke, wood, or maintenance of a traditional fireplace. The Opti-myst® line of interior fireplaces uses revolutionary ultrasonic technology to create a lifelike flame and smoke effect. The result is an appearance so authentic it will be mistaken for a traditional wood-burning fireplace. The innovative technology uses water to create the illusion of flames and smoke. Each unit comes equipped with an easy-to-fill water tank, which offers 12 to 14 hours of continuous operation before requiring a refill. The company offers traditional looks, which feature patented LED inner glow logs molded from actual hardwood, an authentic metal log grate and glowing ash mat to add a realistic touch, or more modern varieties. The newest model to feature the company’s patented Opti-myst® flame is the Willowridge - a curvaceous design that plays in the light and creates a texture that has a mesmerizing quality. The dancing Opti-myst® flame combines beautifully with the rippled surface of the champagne finish surround in a design that is both architectural and organic offering a Zen-like feel. Along with other indoor fireplaces, Classic Fireplaces’ showroom features the latest in exterior options as well, letting you get a jumpstart on spring outdoor living.

Fresh Fixtures

It’s spring, time to try something new and bold; and we are not talking about your wardrobe, but your light fixtures. The Gaetano family by Eglo Canada features clean, contemporary metal domes in two metal finishes and sizes. The 15 inch and 21 inch diameters are available in either a glossy white or silver exterior with a polished white interior for superb light distribution. Its simple bold shape can look equally as good over a kitchen island or dining room table. Matte and gloss white finishes have reemerged in the lighting industry. “For many years it’s been primarily brushed nickel and bronze but white is again making a comeback,” says Alison Demaré BID, Branch Manager for Robinson Lighting Ltd. “The clean lines of the Gaetano domes are somewhat reminiscent of the 1970s mid-century design which are so popular currently.” This dome has an LED light source, which produces an exceptional amount of energy efficient light, equivalent to that of two 100-watt traditional lamps. Due to the small nature of the LED, it is fully integrated inside the dome, producing a virtually glare-free installation. “LED fixtures have opened up the world of lighting to be more creative in the shapes and sizes of light fixtures while utilizing energy efficient sources,” explains Demaré. Visit Robinson Lighting’s showroom to see how LED technology can brighten your space. Spring 2015 | STYLE MANITOBA | 101

Kitchen&Bath Cutting edge technology

Family-owned, Winnipeg-based Western Marble, Granite & Tile (WMGT) is the most technologically advanced granite, quartz and marble fabrication company in Western Canada. Their laser-precise work has been showcased in spectacular kitchen counters, and now the same slabs can be added to a custom vanity and sink combination. The company’s showroom, located at 1321 Yukon Avenue, recently underwent a re-design and launched a new vanity program. Utilizing leftover granite or quartz slabs from larger projects, the company is able to offer a custom vanity template, which includes seven different in-stock sink models, and install both pieces. Unlike a laminate vanity, these hard surfaces are highly durable, won’t fade, and create a statement piece in any bathroom. The warehouse has also been revamped in order to house more in-stock stone. Over the past year WMGT has increased inventory so they can provide quicker turnaround time for projects, as well as give customers the opportunity to see their product before they purchase. With their recent Spirit of Winnipeg award nomination, WMGT welcomes customers to come down and see the in-house stone, new full granite backsplash display, as well as the choice of vanities that keeps updating every week. WMGT’s cutting edge work will be seen in this year’s spring Parade of Homes in developments such as Sage Creek, Bridgwater Lakes, South Pointe, River Park South and Amber Trails.

European Influence

It may not be in Paris or Prague, but the kitchen in Gino’s Homes latest showhome has its design roots in Europe. Alexander Scheiermann, the design and sales consultant with Kitchen Craft who oversaw the South Pointe project, explains he integrated the European ideals of clean, smooth, and simple into this large, bright North American kitchen. “You’re going to see European influence more and more in homes this year,” he states. “With that style you’ll see things like simple countertops, and floating or raised shelves. You see it a lot already with vanities where they are raised, or floating.” Here white floating shelves flank the large kitchen window, while the dark Thermofoil cabinets in the colour Ore add contrast in the big space. “The simple handles on the doors and fullextension, soft-close drawers also give some depth to the design,” notes Scheiermann. The focal point and epicentre of the kitchen is the 8.5-foot island, which features a full set of drawers on one side, while being completely open on the other. “The house features a glass staircase, so I wanted to reflect that in the island’s design. I wanted something that you could almost look through,” he explains. Kitchen Craft also took this European influence into the adjoining room with a custom built entertainment unit that features the same dark drawers and floating white shelves. Kitchen&Bath Set in Stone

Sometimes a client’s ideas are set in stone. The owners of this new home were asking for a lofty task; a seamless quartz counter for a large oddly shaped island. While a few other companies tried to pitch the pair on a two-piece counter, Dennis Konrad of Creative Granite Design Works was up for the challenge of providing a one-piece. The solution was finding a large enough piece of quartz to cut the entire template on. “We also had to make sure it still fit through the doorway,” laughs Konrad, adding they also provided matching quartz counters for under the kitchen’s cabinetry. In the last year, Konrad’s company has been installing more and more quartz versus granite in condos and homes. While both are highly durable surfaces, quartz is easier to match to décor because of its consistent colour, whereas granite, being a natural stone, has variation in colour and veining make each top unique. Granite is also a green product, making it an eco-friendly choice. Both surfaces offer high-quality, long-lasting countertops, vanities, patios, fireplaces and barbecue stands, and come in a vast range of colours and styles. Creative Granite Design Works’ interactive showroom showcases 400 viewable granite and quartz surfaces in 300 plus colours in high-resolution online photos, as well as a team of experts to create custom design solutions.

Affordable Luxury

When putting together a homeowner’s wants and needs for their shower, the request for the luxury of a rain showerhead and the functionality of a hand shower are increasing. And with the trend of beautiful tile surrounds, a hand shower has become a must for cleaning ease. The exposed shower systems that were first made popular in Europe are now being seen in more Manitoba homes. The Grohe Euphoria Shower System is a great way to incorporate both luxury and functionality, while accomplishing a modern and minimalistic appearance. The rain showerhead features Grohe’s DreamSpray® technology, which allows for a perfect spray pattern, resulting in that relaxing spa feel. The hand shower is equipped with EcoJoy® technology, meaning it uses less water while still performing with perfect flow. This option is no longer limited to just showers either; as of 2014, Grohe released a complementary system with a tub spout as well, giving complete flexibility for both applications. The TurboStat® valve provides full control over the fixture’s water temperature, while the built-in diverter allows the user to easily select between the two shower functions. The entire fixture is completely exposed, so there’s little that has to go behind the wall, saving on installation time. Finished by Grohe’s impressive Starlight Chrome and backed by their lifetime warranty, it is both beautiful and functional at once.
