As we enter another season of change, which usually fills me with so much pleasure, I can’t help but watch the news and be bewildered by what is happening all around us . I know that most people are doing the right thing - and following all the rules on masks and lockdowns - but then there are those who obviously don’t care about their fellow man. It’s not that hard to wear a mask - so why do so many refuse to do it? And, please make sure that you get vaccinated as quickly as possible - we have - and so have our family and friends. It’s the only way that we have a chance of bringing this insidious virus under control. It’s so lucky that we live in a thoughtful community here, that tries hard to respect their fellow neighbours and friends - where we all try to support each other through the Covid madness - the businesses that are struggling to survive, the people who through illness are a bit too nervous to leave their homes, and those on the frontline in the medical system, who look after us when things go wrong - the paramedics, ambulance drivers, doctors and nurses, the community doctors administering the vaccines, and those monitoring the testing facilities. Well done one and all. On a lighter note - we can still look out over the beautiful blue ocean, watch the surfers and swimmers enjoying our natural bounties; the walkers striding along the pathways that wind around the foreshore, and the tracks through the forests; take a picnic up to the mountains or visit a farm gate to learn more about how our food is produced. And, after all that - take the time to enjoy a coffee or meal at one of our fine cafés and restaurants around the region.

This issue is packed full of beautiful images, prestige properties, dazzling interior design features, stunning fashion and accessories, gorgeous cars, stunning jewellery - and a plethora of theatre and arts events. As well as wonderful dining and wines to enjoy this season.

This season we take the opportunity to talk with our favourite Queensland Wimbledon winners, Ash Barty and Evonne Gooligong-Cawley, and find out about a young girl’s dream to emulate her hero. We also catch up with Supercar Blondie - one of the world’s most famous car enthusiast and blogger. It is a ‘rags to riches’ story that takes a young, S.E. Queensland, Scenic Rim girl from Boonah to Dubai to work in radio, and ended up taking over the men’s domain of fast, prestige cars - and along the way proved herself a force to be reckoned with. And, congratulations to our wonderful athletes, who travelled to the 2020 Olympics in Japan - and made all Australians so proud. In particular, local Sunshine Coast girl Kaylee ?? who managed to match the medal tally of Dawn Fraser and Ian Thorpe - at age 20yrs. As you will all know, food, wine and lifestyle are always high on our list of priorities each season, and Spring is one of the most exciting seasons for fabulous, fresh farm to plate dining. We have sourced some great recipes for you to enjoy this season, as the weather heats up and the party season jumps into full swing. Covid Permitting of course! This issue also sees the start to our new Healthy, Eating Feature - where you can learn more about the ideology behind plant-based eating. And, learn about why more and more people are changing their eating habits - to reduce their meat consumption, and practice a new way to increase their healthy life goals. We have also launched our new association with Peter Trainer, a social media guru, who will be running our new social media platforms. His expertise has taken him around the world on assignments, but his home is right here in Noosa. Changes are exciting - so watch out for what comes next!! Please read and enjoy.

or many visitors, that our community is very special is well known, hence joining us to take ‘time out’. COVID brought a new reality. Many have now joined us permanently to either retire early, work from home, or get out from major cities where lock downs do not come with beach time, incredible hikes along the Noosa Trail, or the security that comes from neighborhoods that know and care deeply for each other. With market demand driving prices beyond the capabilities of our much-loved residents and key industry staff, we have the greatest dilemma. How do we house those who provide everything we as residents and visitors need? Whether it is our chefs or child carers, right through to retail and aged care assistants, these workers and volunteers are vital to us and the experience of Noosa. The Mayor and I have now worked together since November 2020 to address the short-, medium- and longer-term response, including emergency housing for families being impacted who have been faced with the very real risk of being labeled ‘homeless’. Affordable Housing is essential for sustainable living which

promotes physical and mental wellbeing. When we lose sight of what ‘to sustain’ means, we lose the ability to rectify. With Australia lagging comparable countries in ensuring that workers and retirees have access to this through community housing models, we have the answer in the ‘how’ but the ‘where’ is problematic in regions that are in demand. The answer? Utilizing our available space better! What had previously gone out of fashion, is very much now trending. Micro apartments, share housing, eco living and ‘villets’ of common interest provide the affordability without the loss of environmental integrity. Small is very much the new ‘big’, and when you live in an incredible community where outdoors is our passion, we can utilize, conceptualize and repurpose spaces in ways that align with our cultural ethos for that laid back lifestyle, whilst retaining our environmental credentials. Sounds easy? On paper yes! The doing however requires a ‘whole of community’ approach, including residents to think of how they can share or repurpose their large houses after family have ‘left the nest’, and investors considering head leasing with our community housing managers, all can be part of the solution. And yes, having the legislation and codes that enable the very desired share houses and community inspired living that our residents have been seeking. We are nearly there, and I thank the State Government and Noosa Council for supporting innovative designs. It takes a village to raise a child. That includes ensuring there is affordable and sustainable living options for them, and their grandparents. Enjoy late winter and spring everyone. May your hearts be warmed by what and who you encounter in your exploring of all things Noosa, and that you are inspired by how we are that village who ‘will’.

Prior to going into photography for a career (it started as a much loved hobby) Peter was a former executive chef for many years in places such as The Radisson Hotel Group in Port Douglas and fine dining in South Perth, as well as cruise boats throughout the Pacific islands - and owned his own restaurant Zeldas in Hastings Street Noosa at the young age of 21. His former passion for food was reignited upon becoming a plant based vegan, as he began using ingredients and designing recipes which introduced fresh flavours he had not combined previously. Apart from the amazing array of flavours Peter says not a single thing is missing from his plant based diet; every meal he previously made is still prepared - however now only plant based products are used.

From the Scenic Rim to the City of Gold, how Alex Hirschi has fuelled her career as the world’s most famous carfluencer.

he cult of the social media influencers is something we’ve become accustomed to over the years – the extroverted, eccentric, preening, polished presenters who fire their own brand of broadcasting bolshiness onto our devices with, often, devastating regularity. For the most part we view these broadcasters with a level of

Alex presenter grew up in Boonah, 60km south-west of Brisbane, where she would move to with her mother Julie at the age of 13, while father Richard stayed behind to tend to the land. Hers was a happy childhood, the middle sister between Kate and Nina; yet perhaps it was the paucity

mild derision – there are a few too many looking to push make-up brands or start a scrap with Floyd Mayweather – but every now and again one comes along who can interact with an audience in way that feels like entertainment, not self-congratulation. The fact Alex Hirschi has grown to become a multimillionaire by virtue of the multimillionaire lives and material possessions she reviews is an accidental side-product, because in almost every other way the 35-year-old carries with her a powerful layer of humility… as you would perhaps expect of someone who hails from the ruggedly rural climes Queensland.

Either way, we were always out and about looking to explore.

“From the early days, it didn’t matter if it was a Fiat or a Ferrari - cars have always thrilled me, and that stepped up a whole level when I got my licence.” Alex notes that Lancer as the first car she had, and still retains a fondness for the Japanese manufacturer. “Driving a Lancer you always felt like you had a level of stylish protection around you. There was something quite Back to the Future about it – a modern car that hid its age. “Perhaps not the most reliable thing you’d find on the road,” she laughs, “but something I wasn’t totally embarrassed to be seen in. And we still have it back in Boonah!” Alex’s career started in earnest having graduated in Journalism & Business from Queensland University of Technology at the age of 21. She quickly progressed into media work and developed a flair for radio, and by 23 the Aussie was looking for the opportunity to venture abroad where she could take her creative aspirations to a new markets. “I think moving to Dubai with my now-husband Nik in 2008 was a big thing for me. It was a place I had always aspired to visit because so much of what it stands for represents the way I see myself – emerging from very little, the ambition and enthusiasm to build and create, and a passion for informing and inspiring people. The United Arab Emirates is famed for that attitude and I could see a lot of myself in that.”

Working on radio station Dubai 103.8 put the talented broadcast journalist on the guest list for a host of major events in the Gulf port. While in one sense she was the girl on the ground for celebrity interviews with the likes of John Travolta, Jake Gyllenhaal and Liam Neeson, her willingness to play the press game meant hooking up with a host of commercial contacts too. “What I love about Dubai is that even though there is vast wealth, there is also every type of character and personality,” she says. “What I’ve found over the years is half those people you meet are very private and want to stay away from microphones and cameras, while the other half love talking about themselves and their achievements.” In nine years at the radio station, Alex’s contacts book and reacquainted passion for fast cars merged into the creation of side project Supercar Blondie, which launched in 2017. Within a year she had made the top 50 list of Most Influential Women in the Arab World, and frequent online and television opportunities have followed, featuring on shows such as Car Crews, Grip and, of course, Top Gear. It all adds up to a Supercar Blondie social media presence that now exceeds over 60 million subscribers, half of which are on Facebook. Her personable approach and ruthless drive for originality in a world that tends to offer so much replication and syndication, mean Alex is perfectly placed. The fact she is a woman, and an attractive one whose looks and mannerisms reflect the style and optimism of the Gold Coast, helps too. “I’ve never used the fact I’m female to get me


any further than I should be; I don’t want to be a number or a quota, I want to produce great, original, worthwhile content. Yet I will say that in a maledominated environment, people obviously want to see something different, and of course I offer that.” It’s all a long way from those uncomplicated days growing up in Boonah – she’s now some 12,000 miles away in the City of Gold, and the distance is, on occasions, telling. “I never dreamed I would move so far away,” she says. “Obviously I wanted to step out in the world and do my own thing, and of course I am proud of where I’m come from, but I do miss home. “Boonah is essentially three roads – it’s very unassuming, very unspectacular; but there’s so much of me and my family there. I’m proud of that fact, and of the people back home.” She continues: “I think that’s probably the most profound thing you realise when you travel the world – you can be surrounded by the most beautiful cars, yachts, hotels and everything else, but really there is no place like home.” So to return back to the start, in this era of social media we live in, which drives young people to embrace celebrity and influencer culture as a vehicle for fame and fortune, Alex is clear in her advice. “No-one ever got anywhere without working hard,” she says. “Even that YouTube star you detest the most has sat up long into the night to put together ideas and edits to entertain people. “Those people, long before they were anywhere close to being famous, had the energy and the ideas to create something different, and that’s what you have to do to be seen.”

ALEX HIRSCHI QUICKFIRE Q&A Q: What’s your dream car? ALEX: It would have to be a Bentley. That’s how it all got started for me – I knew a few of their people in Dubai because I was the radio girl who would go out to these events, and they said I could borrow a car for the weekend. A Bentley was always the true aspirational motorcar for me, and there was me driving one.

I desperately didn’t want to let it go, so that encouraged me to knock on doors so I could get to the point of building up a car channel and, maybe, one day, own one for real! Q: What gives you the most satisfaction? ALEX: I should say the cars, but as much as that it’s the positivity I get from other women in motoring, because it remains a very maleorientated world.

I’m not the person who will shout from the rooftops about equal rights and feminism because I think we all have it in ourselves to create and affect our own futures, but seeing people flourish in industries that haven’t perhaps been fair in the past I think is really encouraging. Q: What do you miss most about home? ALEX: Well I left where we lived in rural Queensland when I was about 13, so it’s a long time ago now, but

going back there a couple of times a year for some downtime takes me back to happy family times. My parents have a simple home full of memories – books, antiques… it’s a treasure trove of memories. What I probably miss most are the sounds – in Dubai, it’s just the city, motorways and main roads. I really miss the countryside – crickets, birds and kookaburras… that gentle hum that reminds me of home.

Gala Fundraiser for Santa’s Classy Helpers... On a night full of sparkling lights, twinkling candles and merriment, guests enjoyed a tantalising three course dinner, prepared by FISH Parkridge Executive Chef and complemented by four exceptional Chateau Tanunda wines from the Barossa Valley. The dinner also included Truffle honey from Hum Honey; a delicious assortment of Kenilworth Cheeses and ginger from Buderim Ginger.

he highlight of the evening was a private performance by an original Ten Tenor, Roger Davy, who had guests swaying in their seats - and some with tears in their eyes, as he showcased songs from Phantom of the Opera, Figaro, and a few Italian classics. Lorraine Kenway founder of Santa’s Classy Helpers, a local charity group that for the past 10 years - has assisted over 300 disadvantaged families, and up to 1,000 children each year, by providing them with fresh fruit and vegetables, pantry staples, chocolates and lollies, cleaning products, pillows and towels, clothing and brandnew toys for the children. SCH know that by assisting them each year, they are ensuring that these families can have a wonderful Christmas with their family - worry free. Santa’s Classy Helpers raise funds all year, by holding various functions, dinners, lunches, golf day, theatre evenings and fashion shows. ho did it? That’s where today’s Sherlock Holmes, Inspector Poirot and Miss Marple need to step in and detect the murderer amongst them. Each passenger will become a character in the drama, and can dress accordingly. Everyone will receive a special name for the journey, along with event money to bribe or blackmail, and an ‘accusation form’ that they will use to smoke out the murderer.The murder most foul will take place at Amamoor Station, and passengers in each carriage will be able to use the return journey to Gympie - to hone their investigative skills for the big reveal over dinner. The clues will be everywhere. A drinks cart will operate on board the Rattler, and a seated dinner in Gympie Station’s Rusty Rails Café will be where the murderer is revealed. There will be prizes for the passenger who solves the murder first, and also for best dressed and richest player- as a result of their wheeling and dealing with the event money. The Murder on the Rattler Express service will depart historic Gympie Station at 6pm in a steam train that was in operation back in the 1920s. The Rattler will travel through to the historic village of Amamoor, where the Rattler is rotated on a restored turntable for its return journey to Gympie. The meticulously hand-crafted carriages and the rolling hills of the Mary Valley will provide an atmospheric backdrop for passengers, as they seek to uncover the murderer within their midst. Tickets are $195 per person, including a set dinner at Rusty Rails Café and all the props required for playing the murder game. Anything else?

Ash y t r a B wins How Noosa resident and tennis icon Evonne Goolagong-Cawley rolled back the years in celebrating Ashleigh Barty’s debut Wimbledon win. Words DANNY BOWMAN It’s strange how sport, perhaps more than anything else, manages to bring about moments that appear simply destined to happen. Those instances where fate, emotion and elation work together to produce a result that might as well be straight out of a movie script.

W

e’re lucky in Australia to have experienced such moments numerous times across all manner of sports - where you sit back and utter those words “it just had to happen”. And as far as tennis goes, the achievements of everyone from Rod Laver to Pat Cash to Margaret Court will always be framed in the very highest regard. And yet, on July 10th, there was perhaps the most perfect synergy of sporting contentment we could have dreamed of, certainly as far as goes the people of Noosa embracing one of their own in a golden moment of glory. That Queensland native Ash Barty clinched a debut Wimbledon title, defeating Czech Karolina Pliskova 6-3, 6-7, 6-3 in the final, was certainly celebration enough – the 25-year-old’s ascent to world number one two years ago with her French Open win had necessitated another Grand Slam win, and it came. Yet to land that next big honour in the very mould of her hero, Evonne Goolagong (Cawley), who strove to similar success in south-west London exactly half a century years ago, is one for the Hollywood producers to get their heads around, perhaps.

Barty said, “I have always played my tennis in awe of Evonne and always regard her as the inspiration and the person I want to emulate“Obviously her Wimbledon title is something that’s always been there as an example of a true champion performance, so it feels so special to me that I am able to pay tribute to her by winning it myself.” The champion, who was born in Ipswich, hasn’t always had an easy ride in the sport. She took an indefinite break from action in 2014 and returned two years later, quickly ascending into the world’s top 100, where she has remained ever since. And yet, when she arrived at the Wimbledon championships at the end of June, there was clearly a Wimbledon star of the past nudging her on to potential greatness. Evonne’s first Wimbledon win, way back in 1971, came against a backdrop of many of the difficulties suffered by indigenous Australians. While born in New South Wales, the icon, who retired in 1983, has committed so much of her life and time – through the Evonne Goolagong Foundation and the support of countless tennis and football initiatives in the area – to Noosa Heads, where she moved at the start of the Nineties after a long spell in Florida with husband Roger Cawley. “Evonne has always been someone who has given back infinitely more than she took from sport, and that’s what inspires me to keep moving forward,” said Barty. Of course, the world no.1 made a not insignificant contribution to this perfect storyline as well – not just in winning Wimbledon, but doing so in a bespoke dress intended to mirror the design of Goolagong’s when she first lifted the crown. While the world’s sports media lapped up the almost perfect 360-

degree story, for the new champion, the win was as much about quiet reflection. “I’m the type of player who loves those big moments, but am just as content with my own thoughts – I think that offers me real perspective and certainly keeps my feet on the ground.” Relying on an inspiration from the past can be dangerous, something Goolagong alluded to after the final. “I’ve told Ash to go out and be her own person, her own star,” she said. “Tennis is a completely different game now to what it was then, and this win makes it very much certain she can stand up entirely as who she is now – a Wimbledon champion. I know how that feels and it is something that never leaves you, never makes you feel anything other than huge pride, yet drives you on to the next challenge.” In every way, Goolagong, 70 at the end of July, is correct. Barty may well be defined as the Wimbledon champ who bridged a 50-year gap in bringing a new Aussie female champion to the table (although Goolagong did grab a second SW19 win in 1980), but the hard work truly begins now. And few would suggest the right-hander cannot use this platform to ascend to the level of greatness that Goolagong was able to achieve – four Australian Open titles, two at Wimbledon and one in Paris, along with a host of doubles honours. It helps that Barty is at the top table of the sport at a time when the women’s game is in real transition. The Williams sisters’ vice-like grip on major honours has been loosened, while potential successors such as Naomi Osaka, Caroline Wozniacki, Simona Halep and Angelique Kerber have all vied for the number one position without being able to truly nail their colours. Success? Yes. Dominance? No. Barty is aware of her own strengths and limitations, and only by perfecting both will see have a chance to elevate her status to a level where she can begin to become regarded as a true generational great, but she is well on her way. “I know how much hard work goes into fulfilling potential, and I know there can be no let-up in what is required,” she said. “I feel time is still very much on my side, and I’m determined to make it.” To start that journey by tapping into the brilliance of Evonne Goolagong Cawley has certainly been an impressive and inspiring place to start. “I’m so proud of how Ash handles herself both on and off the court,” she concluded. “She has a great career to play out, and she will.”

This is a little crash course on plant-based living for those new to the phrase, interested in veganism, or simply looking for different ways we can look after our planet.

Plant-based or vegan? The two terms are often used interchangeably but don’t always mean the same thing. ‘Plant-based’ is just as it sounds – a diet based on plants and avoiding animal products. ‘Veganism’ is more than just a diet, referring to a moral commitment to animals and distaste for animal cruelty. Vegans will not eat, use, wear or promote animal products or byproducts; this includes clothing such as leather and cosmetics that have been tested on animals. Ultimately the choice is yours alone; whether you wish to identify with either of the above terms or label yourself as anything at all. Whatever path you choose, the advantages to reducing animal products in your diet extends well beyond

For your health Growing up, we’re always told to “eat your vegies” but did you ever wonder why? We all know that vegetables and greens are important for growing bodies and if anything, it should become more important to include fresh produce the older we get. The benefits of eating a plant-based diet is well documented. According to multiple studies, vegetarians and vegans can enjoy a longer life expectancy, due to the decreased risk of cardiovascular disease and lower LDL cholesterol levels. A meta-analysis conducted in 2017 found that a vegan diet can reduce the risk of cancer by as much as 15%, which in unsurprising considering the World Health Organisation declared processed meat as a group 1 carcinogen. A diet rich in plants, legumes, nuts and seeds is ideal for optimum health – to ensure you are getting a wide variety of vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and fibre so you can live a long and healthy life.

According to the UN’s Food and Dairy Agricultural Organisation (FAO), the meat and dairy industry accounts of approximately 14.5% of total global greenhouse gas emissions. This is without considering the devastating effects that fishing has our oceans and marine life or the environmental impact that comes from destroying vegetation in order to grow and feed livestock. By consciously reducing your animal consumption, you are helping to reduce the demand for mass-produced meat and dairy and creating a better planet for all.

For the animals Perhaps the most fulfilling reason to consider a plant-based diet is knowing that you are saving lives. As humans it is within

our nature to share empathy with other living creatures. Many of us have pets or animals ourselves and it is heartbreaking to imagine hurting our beloved four-legged friends, let alone killing them for food. Unfortunately, society has conditioned us to consider one species higher than another – while killing dogs is considered inhumane and cruel, killing lambs or baby calves is “simply part of life”. This no longer needs to be the case. With the increase in easily accessible plant-based alternatives in supermarkets and restaurants, there is no need for meat on our plates. Therefore, if you consider yourself an animal lover, you can happily enjoy a delicious and well-rounded diet without unnecessary cruelty.

Asparagus and Goats Cheese Truffle Toasts A tasty treat with lovely texture contrasts for a special snack, starter or light meal. Serves: 4 Cooking time: 15-20mins Ingredients: 2 small fresh beetroot 1 bunch fresh asparagus, woody ends removed 4 slices flatbread or pita 100g spreadable goats cheese 2 tablespoons fresh walnuts, roughly chopped Truffle oil Watercress or seasonal herbs Method: Place the beetroot into a baking paper lined steaming basket, and cook for 15 minutes. Add the asparagus and cook for an extra 2-3 minutes. 1.Spread the flatbread (or pita) with the goats cheese and cook under a hot grill until golden. Top with the prepared sliced beetroot, asparagus and walnuts. 2. Season with salt and pepper, drizzle with truffle oil and sprinkle with fresh herbs. Serve and enjoy.

Whole grains: wheat germ and oats.

“MY JOURNEY TO BECOMING VEGAN WAS ONE OF THE BEST CHOICES I HAVE EVER MADE IN MY LIFE. I HAVE BEEN VEGAN FOR NEARLY A DECADE AND I AM NEVER LOOKING BACK”.

M

y first steps to a vegan lifestyle was almost an intuitive feeling that meat was not healthy. I was never in my life a huge meat eater so it was a easy change for my health. Then after seeing footage of beautiful sentient beings in a slaughter house I couldn't believe I'd been so unaware of the cruel and unnecessary things done to these animals. So then I was vegan for my health and the animals. Years passed and soon many amazing documentaries appeared such as: Conspiracy, What The Health, Dominion, Game Changers and Seaspiracy and WOW, these were all so informative not only about health and the animals but for our precious planet we live on. Since becoming vegan I immediately noticed an abundance of positive changes physically, mentally and emotionally. My energy was through the roof, my skin was glowing, my mental health was stabilising, my menstrual cycle was no longer irregular or painful, my endurance in fitness improved drastically the list goes on! But my greatest achievement and miracle was creating new life in my womb, I gave birth to a big healthy 4 kg baby boy that had been vegan since conception. Piero is now 3 and absolutely thriving on a vegan diet. It is undebatable and undeniable that the vegan lifestyle is the best choice you can make in your life for yourself, your family, the animals and the planet. I have not lost an argument yet about this and hopefully started some important conversations.

Everyone one talks about ways to create a more sustainable future, well I believe one of the most impactful ways we can achieve this by creating a vegan future. There are so many amazing products out there now that literally everything can be veganized. There is no need to exploit animals, we can all live happily and healthily thriving o of plants! It is 100% possible and as I said the way of the future. My partner Gianmarco and I met 5 years ago at a famous pizzeria in Newtown, Sydney called Gigis. Gianmarco was not vegan

when we met but I never forced anything on to him I just showed him and answered any questions he had. Slowly as he saw how I lived my life and how I was thriving on plants, he made the change to a vegan lifestyle not long after we met! He had concerns at the start, worrying about losing muscles and energy levels. But he is now stronger, heavier and full of beans (literally) he is at the top of his cross-fit gym breaking all the stigmas attached to eating only plants. He then also inspired his family in Sicily to go vegan which really benefited his father as he is a diabetic and was on 5 different pills and an injection but now he only takes 1 pill since becoming vegan. Gianmarco and I always wanted to create a business with a vegan future in mind so it was a no brainer to open a plant-based pizza trailer together! We thought about opening a brick and mortar but we are passionate about travelling so making our business mobile was a must. Because we can move around this gives us the opportunity to not only serve pizzas but to talk too many different and diverse people about what we do and why. We are hoping to light a fire in people hearts to be open to making healthy positive changes in their food choices. We have had many customers not realise we are a plant based pizza trailer even after they experience our pizzas. When we tell them the cheese is actually organic sprouted brown rice they can't believe it. We are truly having some thoughtful and meaningful conversations with people and we really hope we can continue to travel around Australia or the world to start these important conversations. “The future is vegan!”


Truffle Time The allure of the black truffles is hard to describe the rich, aromatic, earthy and almost floral nose permeates through the rich soil, tantalising all who find them. The fruiting body of a fungus, truffles grow beneath the soil on the roots of Oak and Hazelnut trees, covered in the fallen leaves of the trees, which give them protection from insects. The season is short which adds to their mystique and heady pricing. They are sought-after and highly-prized by chefs and diners around the world. We attended the iconic Truffle Kerfuffle Festival in June, and had the distinct pleasure of going truffle hunting with the amazing truffle dogs. Forget about the pigs that were traditionally used to sniff out truffles in Europe - pigs eat ‘anything’ - but dogs can be trained with positive reinforcement scent association, and are more interested in their treats than eating the bounty. The dogs don’t only follow their handler - they independently follow their noses and search out the truffles for themselves. Then they sit and stay until the handler arrives - he give the command to ‘show’ and the gentle dog touches the ground where the truffle scent is strongest. The handler then gently pushes the leaves aside, takes a bit of soil in his hand and sniffs it to find the truffle scent, then carefully spreads the soil with his fingers to unearth the precious cargo.

truffletime OUR TRUFFLE HUNTING ADVENTURE... During the Truffle season in Western Australia, highly trained, truffle dogs and their handlers spend their days unearthing fresh Perigord Black Truffles - to be shipped to over 30 countries around the world - all within hours of being harvested. The Southern Forests of Western Australia offer rich, loam soil and plentiful rainfall - which are integral to the bountiful supply of what are now regarded - as the finest truffles in the world.

he truffle orchards of the region of Manjimup, right in the heart of Australian truffle country, have become the success story of the region - with growers committed to producing the highest and most consistent, quality truffles available in the world.

Our beautiful truffle girl was a Hungarian Vizsla, and her daughter was also a truffle hunter. The truffle dogs wear socks on their front feet so that they don’t mark the truffles when they find them - they work hard, sniffing the ground beneath the trees of the picturesque orchards, usually only for an hour or so at a time, so that they don’t get tired; their noses must be in top condition! And, they sit patiently waiting for the truffle to be unearthed so that they receive their doggy treat. There are several different breeds of dogs used, Labradors, Vizslas, Charlie the Wolf Hound-cross etc - all highly-skilled at sniffing out thousands of dollars worth of truffles during their hunts.

King Prawn, cucumber & tropical salad with chilli coconut dressing Serves: 4 as a light meal; 6 as a side salad Prep time: 20 mins Cooking time: 6 mins Ingredients: 2 mangoes 1/2 small ripe pineapple, finely sliced and cut into bite-sized pieces 6 baby cucumbers, quartered lengthways 2 tbs shredded coconut 3 tsp sesame seeds 1 tsp chilli flakes 2 fennel or 4 baby fennel 6 red radishes 24 (500g) medium cooked prawns,

peeled & deveined 1 cup flat leaf parsley leaves Dressing: 1 lemon, juiced 3 tbs extra virgin olive oil 2 tsp castor sugar one long red chilli deseeded and finely chopped (optional) Method: Place coconut into a small frying pan over medium heat. Cook, shaking pan 23 mins until toasted. Transfer to a bowl. Add sesame seeds to the pan, cook, shaking for 2 mins until lightly toasted. Add the chilli, cook a further 30 secs. Add to the coconut. Set aside to cool. Combine the dressing ingredients in a jug, season and whisk until well combined. Pour half into a large bowl. Using a mandolin, thinly slice the fennel and radish. Add to the dressing just before you are ready to serve. Toss gently to coat.

Cut the cheeks from the mangoes, and using a large spoon remove the flesh from the 4 cheeks and slice. Add to the fennel with the cucumbers, pineapple, prawns and parsley. Toss gently to combine. Pile the salad onto serving plates. Sprinkle with coconut chilli mixture. Spoon over the remaining dressing. Season and serve.

Food Glorious Food Frenchies Brasserie... Noosaville’s favourite French restaurant, Frenchies Brasserie is renowned for its authentic French cuisine complemented by its Aussie laidback ambience, recently hosted a special night of wine and food.

T

he David Powell Wine Dinner offered guests a perfectly matched four course dinner, created by executive chef Fabian Oliveau, each matched with a signature Powell & Son wine. Powell & Son wines are handmade by David – a renowned winemaker for over 30 years – and his son Callum, using grapes from some of the region’s oldest Rhone vines. As their philosophy is - that a great wine is made in the vineyard, David and Callum tend the vines personally, pick the fruit, and ferment it using age-old European techniques. Their traditional and minimalist winemaking techniques produce unique and expressive wines - year after year - Shiraz, Grenache, Mataro, Riesling and Roussanne Marsanne - that speak of the terroir where they are grown, South Australia’s stunning Barossa and Eden Valleys. David’s experience producing some of the great wines of the world, and among the best of the Barossa Valley, made the evening a wine and food event to remember. Executive chef Fabian Oliveau's starter was a delicate Tuna Tartare balanced on a tapioca cracker, complemented by a glass of Powell & Son Eden Valley Riesling 2018 and Powell & Son Roussanne Marsanne 2018. An entrée of Duck Rillette, cranberries sauce gastrique, petite salade and brioche followed and was perfectly matched with a glass of Powell & Son GSM 2017 and Powell & Son Barossa and Eden Valleys Shiraz 2017.

The main was a perfectly Braised Beef Cheek Bourguignon, mashed potatoes, bacon and mushrooms that was balanced by glass of Powell & Son Schulz Shiraz 2018 and Powell & Son Loechel Shiraz 2018. To finish the evening, a cheese course of deep-fried Camembert and honey dressing was presented with a glass of Powell & Son Kraehe Shiraz 2016. A dining adventure to tantilise...

W

hat makes the southern region of Western Australia the best culinary adventure for your next post-Covid lockdown experience? Well in my mind - it all has to do with the wonderful Mediterranean climate which is influenced by the Darling Scarp mountain range, that provides almost perfect conditions for the growth in the abundant community of farms. The diverse range of microclimates enhance the raising over 50 varieties of vegetables and fruits, as well as some of the most prestigious vineyards in Australia. I won’t mention the rain - oops I did! They also have a very generous rainfall. There are so many options to choose from but I have selected a few

Truffles Well definitely - when you are in the heart of truffle country - in the right season - every menu will be showcasing the softly perfumed, rich and tantalising truffles in all their glory. We tried them on everything from gently scrambled eggs; grilled mixed mushrooms on toast; a good piece of Wagyu; melted Swiss raclette cheese, potatoes and gherkins - even freshly popped popcorn. Who said that truffles were elitist?! Be sure to take the opportunity to taste them if the occasion raises its head.

Restaurants: What a choice. This region is full of excellent wineries - most with exceptional restaurants on-site. Unfortunately due to the Covid lockdown in Perth while we were in the SW, most restaurants were only able to take fewer bookings to adhere to the rules. So we missed a few that we wanted to visit. Luckily for us some were still open.

Millbrook Winery Restaurant This absolutely fabulous restaurant is under the guidance of Twohatted Executive Chef, Guy Jeffreys and Head Chef Jamie Hembrow. With a focus on sustainable foods - and inspiration from the everchanging seasonal offerings, mostly sourced from their own one acre farm. The fertile property incorporates an active orchard, producing over 100 varieties of heirloom vegetables, as well as fruits, all complemented in their restaurant by produce, fish and meats sourced from local suppliers. The menu we tasted was incredible and matched with premium wines from the Millbrook Winery cellars, made our day a total delight. The menu was bursting with fresh flavours, incredibly fresh produce from the gardens - and I was lucky enough to choose the signature dish - Viognier Braised Rabbit Risotto. What an incredible dish - can’t wait to go back to the region next year for longer - and revisit this restaurant. www.millbrook.wine

Fresh Water Marron These ‘soft’ skinned freshwater crayfish are the largest found in Australia much larger than the Redclaw Crayfish that we are used to on the eastern coast, and offer a sweet, subtle flesh that almost melts in your mouth. When they are in season you will see them gracing all the menus in WA. I even entered the annual Manjimup raffle to win a supply of them. I didn’t win luckily because I wasn’t sure how I’d either cook them or get them home to Noosa.

hat began as a family passion to produce a traditional digestive 19 years ago, quickly grew into a quest to craft local premium spirits and liqueurs for the Australian market. When the Richartz family arrived in Australia, by way of India and New Zealand in 2002, there was no digestive in sight. A little extra originality was called for and small batch processing started in earnest. Those original experiments continued and soon the entire family and some friends became involved.

Herb mixtures and maceration times were varied. However, something was still missing. So, Christoph made contact with a German master distiller, who accepted the family’s invitation to visit Australia. The missing piece in the puzzle was the introduction of a distillation process. In 2007 the distillery was officially incorporated, a manufacturer’s license was obtained, and true to tradition a German-made copper pot still was imported. Fast forward to 2016 - and with growing demand for their product, and to scale production, a new facility to house the distillery was needed. As Victoria's Mornington Peninsula is synonymous with local makers, award-winning

As I’ve wandered around the township talking to the locals, traders and visitors to the area, one thing has become apparent. The people who come to Kenilworth love the true country feel of a warm welcome, helpful and willing service - and the prospect of one-on-one communication, so lacking in big city shops and venues. The region is also a drawcard for those looking for a true country experience, with a good selection of B&B’s in the area, as well as natural wonderlands for campers to explore and enjoy. And, for those looking for a ‘farm to plate’ experience. On the edge of the shopping precinct, sits the iconic Kenilworth Dairy, Established in 1950, as one of the many rural chefs factories owned by the Kraft Corporation, until in the late 80s, when Kraft moved to centralisation and closed regional factories. At that time, two employees and a local businessman decided that perhaps some of the workers could buy the factory. And they did, renaming it to Kenilworth Country Foods, now Kenilworth Dairies. Now, times have changed - new owner but the dairy is still a local attraction for lovers of fine cheeses, yoghurts and the like. With an onsite café serving fresh lunches, morning and afternoon teas in the undercover entertaining area and surrounding gardens.

En Plein Air pondering Smoke and Mirrors... Although i’m not an artist, I’m sitting outside my rooms (Dealers occupy rooms) (Galleriists work from Galleries), at the beautiful Noosa Marina in fresh sea air.

T

his of course is in stark contrast to my five and a half years in Noosa Junction, where bitumen and brake linings filled my lungs more and more each year. Here the toot toot of the ferries replaces the bark of straight through exhausts... When I last wrote in Noosa Style it was only a message that I was moving, as I didn’t know where i was going. Now i can tell you it’s Shop 14a Noosa Marina (next to the Gelati Bar!!). Long has the world’s art market been a World of Smoke and Mirrors, since Covid, however, the Smoke is Thicker and the Mirrors are more Opaque. Pricing in the art dealers world, comes these days mainly in comparison from auction results. These results are supplied to us subscribing to either AASD or Artnet. We then (I do anyway) deduct the iniquitous Auctioneers Commission of around 50% (25% each) buyers and sellers premiums on a $10,000 sale. In pre Covid sales dealers, agents and private

buyers saw who was bidding and the nervousness of those selling, and sales were around 350 lots with up to 300 people in the rooms. Now, during Covid, rooms (the top 4 or 5) have sales with between 1 and 75 lots, with a few current high -roller clients sitting there metres apart, banks of telephones and computers complete the scene -for those unable to attend under these conditions, visibility (ie: transparency) as to what actually happens is NIL. In two major sales in the recent past - Kerry O’Brian senior art writer for the Sydney Morning Herald, was unable to name one buyer of the major lots she reviewed in her article. She did have, however, the name of Arthur Baileau who purchased one in 1914, but was unable to say which branch of Arthurs descendants it belonged to, or indeed whether any other person owned it. As around 60% of the sales are held in Melbourne these days, we can only hope sales revert to the pre Covid conditions - enabling full transparency, since the end of lockdowns. Leigh Murphy

W

hat began in 2001 as a biennial outdoor sculptural program, Australia’s premier art in the environment project now reflects Noosa’s national and international reputation as a community and destination that foregrounds care for and engagement with the natural environment. Throughout its more than two-decade history, Floating Land has maintained a significant presence at the picturesque location of Boreen Point. Installed along the foreshore of Queensland’s largest natural saltwater lake - Lake Cootharaba; multiple standalone installations of quiet and reflective artworks nestle comfortably within the close-knit community that has embraced the event year after year. While the projects presented bear a light touch and fleeting presence in the natural environment, their brief occupation of iconic sites thoughtfully provoke artists and audiences alike. ‘A bank of black swans- their species population stable- swim, feed and nest blissfully close to the lake’s shore. Such a graceful, serene scene on the banks of Lake Cootharaba at first glance inspires awe. However, closer examination of this seemingly delicate scene reveals a dark irony. Fabrizio Biviano’s Black Swan Theory – quintessential Australian garden ornamental swans made from black car tyres- the second largest source of micro-plastics polluting the world’s oceans and waterways. Their presence in the water at first humorous, is followed closely by an awkward numbing.’ After the resounding success in 2019 of Floating Land’s presence at Noosa National Park, the event is poised again to present a unique opportunity for visitors to happen upon art while exploring the stunning beach landscapes viewed from along

Just meters from the bustling luxury of Hastings Street, the Boardwalk offers an opportunity to view works incidentally as part of an established walking route that weaves amongst the trees, often amid their canopies. Collaborating with the natural environment, these works borrow from their location, giving them meaning and presence without leaving any physical trace at the conclusion of the Biennale. ‘A cluster of intricately handwoven pendant bird nests, delicately suspended along Park Road Boardwalk. Mini speakers contained within play pre-recorded bird songs; birds whose native environment is being lost through deforestation at a rate equivalent to a football pitch of primary rainforest every six seconds. Debbie Symons’ Sing evokes the delicate and intricate natural connections found in the remaining ‘wild’ rainforest environments. Exploring emotions of loss and wonder, Sing initiates reflection as we consider the intricate lives of rainforest birds and the rich biodiversity they are part of. For audiences, this years’ 16 day event entices with the delivery of 30 curated projects presented across the two key sites by a variety of artists, many of which are of world renown. Specialising in raising awareness of environmental issues with their work, Floating Land 2021 includes local, national and international artists at varying degrees of their professional careers. Sound artist, composer and researcher Dr. Leah Barclay- President of the Australian Forum for Acoustic Ecology and research fellow at the Queensland Conservatorium Research Centre returns to Boreen Point this October. Working at the intersection of art, science and technology, the Sunshine Coast artist’s compositions using recordings from the environment to create immersive installations and performances are internationally acclaimed. Melbourne artist Natalie Ryan’s practice explores themes that surround the aesthetic representation of the cadaver and natural sciences throughout history and their inclusion in contemporary art. As a means of understanding the things she finds ‘hardest to comprehend’, Ryan is passionate about animal rights and the natural world, utilising her intricate sculptural works as a platform for greater discussion. Floating Land: at the edge of ideas will run from 9th to the 24th October. Featuring an abundance of site-responsive projects, tours, artist-led workshops, symposium, performances and unique opportunities for visitors, Floating Land 2021 will once again provide opportunity for audiences to engage in conversation about art, the environment and the integral role we each play. On the wall Sunshine Coast Art Prize 2021 finalists announced Hundreds of entries poured in from every state across Australia for the prestigious 2021 Sunshine Coast Art Prize.

he 40 finalists were selected from 425 submissions across a range of genres including painting, drawing, photography, printing, textiles and assemblage. Arts Portfolio Councillor Rick Baberowski said the Sunshine Coast Art Prize was an increasingly important regional showcase event and motivational art award. “The calibre of entries continues to be impressive, full of embedded meaning and drama and each year the artworks bring a new perspective on what’s happening,” Cr Baberowski said. Finalist works are available to view online now at: gallery.sunshinecoast.qld.go v.au The Sunshine Coast Art Prize exhibition of all 40 finalists will be on display at the Caloundra Regional Gallery from 27 August to 10 October, 2021.

The lucrative prizes will be awarded to the winning artists at The Winners’ Announcement gala event on 23 September, 2021. Gallery Director Jo Duke said the judged category winners would be selected by Renai Grace, Director/CEO of the Museum of Brisbane, who has more than 25 years’ experience in the arts and cultural sector. The major prize winner will receive $25,000 cash, sponsored by Argon Law Sunshine Coast and Sunshine Coast Council, with the winning artwork acquired into the Sunshine Coast Art Collection. Exhibition visitors are invited to vote for their favourite work to select the People’s Choice Prize winner, which is awarded to the artwork which receives the most votes. BOY SWALLOWS UNIVERSE Queensland Theatre and Brisbane Festival have announced the cast for the world premiere of Trent Dalton’s Boy Swallows Universe, adapted for the stage by Tim McGarry. Described by Trent Dalton himself as “Eli, heart and soul”, Brisbane-born actor Joe Klocek will play the role of Eli Bell in his hometown. Making his start in Queensland Theatre’s Young Artists’ Ensembles, Klocek most recently appeared in Australian feature film The Dry. Vietnamese-Australian actor and playwright Ngoc Phan will fill the shoulder pads of formidable matriarch ‘Back Off’ Bich Dang. A graduate from Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts, Phan has stage and screen credits to her name - and has a long association with Queensland Theatre as a Teaching Artist. Originally from Queensland, Helpmann Award-winning actor Anthony Phelan will tackle the roles of bone-chilling prosthetic limb and drug merchant,Tytus Broz and convicted murdererturned-babysitter Slim Halliday. ost times when a story (or play, as the case may be) starts with a dark and stormy night, there’s horror coming. Not the case here: with Pygmalion, the dark and stormy night ushers in linguistic hijinks and class commentary. It’s BBQ time again… The scent of food cooking on the BBQ is synonymous with summer – and now is the time to ensure that BBQ spaces have both form and function for the warm months ahead. t’s time to consider an upgrade to your outdoor entertaining area, before the hotter seasons are upon us again.Why not give your area a whole new look prior to the party season.

Here are a few great tips from Matt Leacy, Creative director of Landart Landscapes. The all-important BBQ - When choosing your BBQ look at whether you’re going to cook with coals and wood, or gas - and what extraction you may need to keep the space smoke free. Your choice will come down to personal preference, and to a large degree, what and how you like to cook. Give yourself as much space to prep and cook on as you can. If you’re able to, include a fridge and sink in your BBQ area. And also consider things like waste disposal. “Design-wise, everything should be geared around allowing you to BBQ without having to keep running back inside,” says Matt. Placement of the BBQ is often best along a wall – use the back wall of your house if you’re short on room- and can’t create a separate pavilion or outdoor entertaining space. When choosing your BBQ - Leacy recommends looking at the number of people you would usually cook for. You really only need a large 4-6 burner if you regularly cater for big groups. Otherwise, if you don’t do large-scale entertaining consider something smaller - so that it’s not taking up unnecessary space. Finishes are also important to consider. Stainless steel is durable as a hot plate, however cast iron finishes are even more so and provide a more even temperature. Good ventilation or a range hood are also key. Consider how you use the space - Your BBQ should be positioned so that it’s practical for cooking, and so that the person BBQing is still able to be with guests. But the design should also ensure no one is sitting too close to the BBQ on a hot day. Ideally leave around 1.5 metres between seating and the BBQ whether you’ve opted for dining or lounge seating in the space. If room allows, an outdoor bar is another great way to take your BBQ entertaining up a notch. If however this isn’t possible, a good drink tray or trolley can add to the usability of your outdoor space when entertaining at home. Integrate Heating and Cooling - To get the most out of your space all year round, it’s good to consider at the planning stage how you will heat

and cool the area (if needed). Australia’s hot summers, and depending on where you live, cold winters mean cooling and heating the extremes in temperatures should always be considered. If your outdoor space can be closed in sufficiently, a split system is a good option, however if you would prefer a more open outdoor feel, fans and heating from fire places or pits, or built in heaters, are the best options. If you include a roof and enclose the space - you’ll really need to consider smoke extraction. Think about what’s underfoot and overhead - If you have a roof over your BBQ space/outdoor kitchen, you have a little more flexibility with flooring. You won’t have to consider durability in the elements as much, and things like how slippery it is when wet, when you have a covering. Your outdoor space should form a seamless extension of your indoor living, so ensure that flooring has some synergy with what’s indoors. If you’re planning to renovate indoors this isn’t as critical of course. How the sun hits your outdoor space should also be considered when choosing both flooring and roofing. Look at where and when you need the most overhead protection, and whether you should opt for a permanent structure, or a retractable awning. The flooring and bench surfaces you opt for should also be considered with natural light in mind. You don’t want something too dark that will draw the heat in – or alternatively that’s too polished and will reflect too much light into spaces. Sit in your outdoor space at different times of the day - before you make a final commitment to finishes. From garden to hot plate – When integrating plants into your BBQ area look at things you’ll use when cooking. Herbs, salad plants and vegetables are all great options, and if you consider and plan your plantings, they can really add aesthetic appeal to your space. While your first reaction to BBQing may be to think meat, there’s so many things you can do with vegetables on the BBQ. Feed your lawn Give your lawn a helping hand by nourishing its soil. Although grass blades may be growing slowly in winter, the roots are photosynthesising. While the top layer of the lawn can be affected by frost, and cold wind, the temperature in the roots is mild. Feed soil by applying a hose-on seaweed or organically fortified lawn product. This will help build strong grass blades, replace weak or dead roots and help them grow deeper into the soil. BLUE SKIES ABOVE...

S I WRITE this column in mid-July, Noosa is at its resplendent best. It’s an iridescent winter’s day, barely a cloud in the sky, the gentlest of breezes, twenty something degrees of warmth and satisfied smiles on the faces of all in the tourism, retail and property trades. “It’s an ill wind that blows no one any good” wrote John Heywood in 1546 after losing the feather in his quill. And it was the ill wind of Covid-19 which, in the case of Noosa, blew in the good: fugitives from the south teeming into the shire on extended holidays, or to occupy the homes they had just bought on the internet. While other places battled, Noosa thrived.

HEN Ingrid and I left Sydney in 2013 and bought a home in Headlands Estate adjacent to the Noosa Waters canal zone, the Noosa Waters Residents Association made it clear it didn’t want to rub shoulders with their Headlands neighbours. The unwelcome mat was put out. But the NWRA its changed now has constitution to admit “social members who have an interest or affinity to the area”. They won’t have a vote so won’t have to chip in to replace the canal’s 35-year old lock and weir system. The NWRA website reveals “maintenance of the lock in recent years has been extremely poor and not performed in accordance with relevant Australian standards”. Noosa Council reckons the renovation will cost at least $1.2 million, payable by the 471 canalside property owners.

has revealing a written article on mayor Clare Stewart, settling into the role after her shock defeat last year of one-term mayor Tony Wellington. Jackson summarised the style of the first woman mayor since Noosa was created as a shire in 1910 as ‘inclusive and balanced’, writing: “Facing the need to navigate a range of deep-rooted legacy problems as well as emergent issues, Clare Stewart has recognised that contrasting views and styles need to be heard and understood. Over the last 15 months her mission has become evident – to empower the whole community, not just those who govern it.”

HAT SAID $2,500 each is a pittance given that the median price of a Noosa Waters abode in mid-2021 is estimated to be $2.7 million and 5, The Number soaring. Promontory, recently sold for $5.51 million, more than $500,000 over reserve. Indeed, the entire Noosa Shire property market is the most expensive in Queensland. Last year Sunshine Beach houses recorded capital growth of 28% – the highest in Australia. Long a seaside resort mecca with quality wining and dining to match its beaches, pristine environment and stunning hinterland, in the Age of Covid Noosa has a new sanctuary status. People from south have voted with their mortgages to make it a property megabrand.

HERE are few occasions more satisfying than an afternoon concert followed by a riverside chat over a couple of glasses of an elegant Chablis while watching the sun slowly disappear behind the hills of Cooroy. Unfortunately on this occasion this wasn’t me because a common cold (rhinovirus RNA) had

travelled seemed to have no to the chest and end. So Ingrid went unaccompanied to the Concert Spectacular for Flute, Choir and Orchestra performed by the Noosa Orchestra and the Oriana Sunshine Coast Choir. The program was billed as sacred, serene and furious, reminding me of the definition of my favourite instrument, the oboe, as an ill wind that nobody blows good.

OWEVER I had been able to make it to Brisbane to see Robin Nevyn’s awesome one-woman portrayal of Brunhilde Pomsel in A German Life – “an extraordinary solo performance” declared The Australian, accurate for once. Nevin played an unassuming woman with shorthand skills who found herself working in Joseph Goebbels’ Propaganda Ministry as Jews died by the million. Sounds grim; it was breathtaking - as was the queue outside the ladies’ lavatory at the end of the one act play. There is something skewed in the minds of theatre designers around the world who seem to deliberately cater for such inconveniences.
