I

s it 5 o’clock yet? And is anyone going to judge me if I pour myself a drink before then? (Asking for a friend.) But seriously, times are tough, and alcohol—in moderation—is my antidote. Don’t worry, I sip responsibly and have other, healthier hobbies too, but something about a glass of refreshing rosé after a long day of working from home and parenting my all-consuming kid really takes the edge off. Apparently I’m not alone either. According to market research firm Nielsen, alcohol sales were up 55% from the second week of March to the third—and have remained high in the weeks since. If you’re part of the percentage who’s been partaking in happy hour at home, hopefully you’ve been supporting mom-and-pop places by grabbing growlers from local breweries, purchasing curbside cocktails, or buying bottles from one of our area’s 200-plus wineries. Speaking of the latter, in this month’s feature, “A Local Wine Lover’s Guide” (page 57), we take you to a small sampling of our favorites, including ones that boast bocce ball courts (like our cover winery, Andis), plus share drinkable bottles for $25 or less, buzzworthy wine bars, and restaurants with winning wine lists. We also share current trends in the world of wine (spoiler alert: cans are cool…and readily available at places like Wise Villa Winery, Element 79 Vineyards, and E16 Winery!). It’s an ode to oenophiles that will hopefully make you more appreciative of our region’s robust wine region. With drinking comes eating, and—as per usual—we have plenty of content dedicated to dining. From a piece on Palladio at Broadstone’s Iron Horse Tavern (page 72), where writer Lorn Randall highly recommends the beignets (“pyramids of powdered sugar-covered orbs”); to another about Placer County’s first true Fillipino eatery, Kultura Café (page 76), there are a plethora of diverse dishes waiting to be discovered. For people with excess summer produce, turn to page 78 for recipes to make a garden-fresh feast that’s nutritious, delicious, and meat (but not flavor) free. Athome chefs will also be intrigued by this issue’s Editor’s Picks (page 44), where we highlight 14 foodie finds sure to make your kitchen the tastiest one around town. Finally, in Health & Wellness (page 28), we asked area experts—from licensed therapists to a pediatrician—for their top tips when talking to kids about race. As a mom to —Benjamin Franklin a biracial baby who’s already experienced some people’s unfortunate ignorance, this piece touches extra close to home. I hope we all take some of the suggestions to heart and do our part, as parents, in addressing this not-always easy but essential topic—ensuring the next generation values various cultures and sees individuals as opposed to stereotypes. There’s many more uplifting and informative articles in the pages that follow, so pour yourself a beverage and toast to this tumultuous yet historic time with Style by your side. Cheers! — Megan // megan@stylemg.com @meggoeggowaffle

WHAT SHOW(S) ARE YOU CURRENTLY

BINGEWATCHING? “Normal People, Little Fires Everywhere, Billions, and The Politician are all playing on our binge-list this season. Though drastically different genres, each one is keeping us on the edge of our seats!”—Kerrie L. Kelly

“What shows aren’t we bingewatching? Ozark, Goliath, The Five, Animal Kingdom, Sons of Anarchy, Fleabag…the list goes on!”— Wendy Sipple

“I'm a bit late to the game, but I’ve been watching Ozark recently, and it’s the best show I've seen since Breaking Bad!”—Ray Burgess

“Season 4 of Queen of the South on Netflix and The Man in the High Castle on Amazon Prime.” —Debbie Newell-Juhos

“My daughter thinks I’m a complete nerd, but I’m bingewatching the final season of Fuller House. With all the craziness in the world right now, I’m enjoying the corny simplicity of watching a show that came out 30 years ago.”—Jami Areia “Since I'm home with our newborn and not ever sleeping, I just binged all of Dead to Me and am now revisiting the over 1,000 episodes of House Hunters. It’s nice to have the adult company, even if it’s not real!”—Heather L. Nelson

For the 12th year, Style brings you the latest stack of accomplished area authors and their published works. In no particular order…

NONSENSE! The Curious Story of Edward Gorey by Lori Mortensen, Cameron Park Available at Face in a Book, Amazon, Barnes & Noble, and IndieBound Inspired by a podcast about Edward Gorey and a book from her childhood that he’d illustrated, Lori Mortensen would go on to write a memorable picture biography about a whimsical, one-of-a-kind artist. Kids will learn about Gorey, one of literature’s most creepily creative authors and illustrators, and the inspiration behind a generation of creators, from Lemony Snicket to Tim Burton. Lori Mortensen is an award-winning children’s author of more than 100 books—including Cowpoke Clyde & Dirty Dawg, one of Amazon’s best picture books of 2013. Angel’s Gate by L. Becker, Sacramento Available at iBooks and Smashwords Returning home after a decade, A.G. Morris comes face to face with a new reality. The fantasies of her mother’s troubled mind are real. Angels are real. And they are fighting to protect the entrance to heaven. Pulled into a world she was born to save, A.G. is all that stands between humanity and the fallen. Angel’s Gate is the first book in the new ShadowGate series and was inspired by the question: What would you sacrifice in order to do what was right? L. Becker has been writing since childhood. Her first novel, Legend of Cauterhaugh, was published in 2000. She is excited to embark on her new ShadowGate series that chronicles a world of angels and demons and the inevitable war for heaven.

Along Came Ryan…the Little Gosling King, Volume III, Free the Geese by Barbara Klide, Fair Oaks Available at alongcameryan.com This is Barbara Klide’s latest installment in the series Along Came Ryan…the Little Gosling King, a wild goose love story about the mated pair of Canada Geese, Hawkeye, and Mother Goose, who return to their little paradise—a fully enclosed business courtyard with no body of water—for the third year in a row. They’ve survived and thrived after a hawk attack and raised their young gosling Ryan in Zen-like fashion (Volume I). This third edition includes research with references to the National Geographic and National Audubon Society. Barbara Klide is currently working on Volume IV of Along Came Ryan… She’s also published in More Birds of a Feather: An NCPA Anthology, and will be published in Northern California Publishers and Authors’ upcoming travel anthology. Book profits are donated to several organizations dedicated to animals.

And It Took Two Years by Scott Spiess, Lincoln Available at Amazon When new author Scott Spiess discovered he had a life-threatening heart condition, his old life began to crumble, and through that crumbling, Spiess gave himself two years to make some serious changes. His new book chronicles that journey and how he went from a Type A, control freak to a peaceful reiki master, Buddhist, and massage therapist. Scott Spiess formerly worked as a columnist for the regional magazine California Computer News.

Snow Globe Wishes by Erin Dealey, Placerville Available at Face in a Book, Amazon, and Barnes & Noble Snow Globe Wishes is told in rhyme as a family snuggles up in a cozy blanket fort during a snowstorm and a young girl makes a wish on a snow globe. They awake to a magical morning of outdoor fun—“What if, on this snow globe day, everyone comes out to play?” Featured in Kirkus Review, this book was also in The Washington Post’s “10 great holidayseason books to enjoy with your little ones.” Erin Dealey, a former English and theater teacher, is the author of 16 picture books, with more in the works. She is also the "Drama Mama" at Sugarloaf Fine Arts Camp in the summer.

Super Sushi Adventures: Monkey Idol Rescue by Krithi Munagala, El Dorado Hills Available at Amazon and Barnes & Noble In this second book in the Super Sushi Adventures series, a special monkey idol with super powers disappears from the ZZY museum, and Super Sushi, Terrific Trixie, and Kool Krithi are given the responsibility to bring it back. A secret GPS on the idol indicates it’s somewhere deep in the Amazon rainforest. Who stole the idol? Will the team be able to brave the dangers of the jungle and find it? Seventh-grade student Krithi Munagala’s stories draw inspiration from her three-year-old pet brother, Sushi, capturing moments of compassion, friendship, hope, strength, and self-confidence, and spreading the message that one is never too small to make a difference. All funds from book sales go to animal welfare organizations around the world.

Super Agents Safety Squad by Denize Rodrigues, Rancho Cordova Available at Amazon and Barnes & Noble This handy book is a tool for parents to help facilitate the conversation about child sexual abuse with their kids. With illustrations and appropriate language, it partners with parents to create a bond of trust and accountability, bringing safety to families. Children will be taken on a journey to learn and become agents with the “Safety Squad” and be taught what to do when their privacy is violated. On learning about the sexual assault of her young niece, Denize Rodrigues was not only deeply troubled, but as a mother of two young children, she also wondered what resources existed to help kids better protect themselves. Not finding any, she created Super Agents Safety Squad. An entrepreneur and a mother, this is Rodrigues’ first published work.

The Screaming Silence by Lanser Howard, Roseville Available at Amazon, Barnes & Noble, and IndieBound Silence can be as sweet as the most beautiful symphony. Or it can be a scream so terrifying that you’ll be up all night trying to get it out of your head. Lanser Howard examines loss—the most barebones of human emotion—in his poetry. He takes readers on a merciless journey through the depths of agony and grief and into the light of hope in order to have the courage to fight on. Lanser Howard has worked extensively with combat veterans filtering their traumatic experiences in much of his work. He began his career as a journalist and transitioned into film where he wrote and produced an awardwinning documentary, among other screenplays. Lettering from A to Z: 12 Styles & Awesome Projects for a Creative Life by Phawnda Moore, Rocklin Available at Amazon and Barnes & Noble Written for all levels, this book blends traditional design principles, modern tools, and mindful practices, inspiring you to find your own artistic style. The full-color, 250-page book includes 200 images of Moore’s professional work, published articles, and guidance from her class demos to make beautiful projects via uncial, italic, script, brush lettering, faux calligraphy, rainbow lettering, monoline letters, handwriting, and drawn letters. A trained graphic designer, Phawnda Moore’s lettering art has been printed on apparel and home décor. She was the editor and designer for state and county offices of education and received national recognition for her work. Moore has taught calligraphy for 25 years. Finding It: Your One-Week Guide Toward JobSeeking Success by O. Michele Giacomini, Loomis Available at Amazon This guidebook helps young adults and recent graduates navigate the job-seeking world to find their first "real" jobs or careers with the organizational strategies necessary to accomplish that goal faster. Humorist, award-winning educator, keynote speaker, and multiple business owner Michele Giacomini has been writing for over 30 years. She first started out as a reporter and quickly rose to the ranks of magazine editor. Giacomini balances her writing with various DIY adult learner books and her hysterical reflections on life's chaos, as @MissOMG. Sunshine by Jesse Bennett, Roseville Available at Amazon and Barnes & Noble Sunshine inspires children to shine their light and stick to friends who feel like sunshine. The story teaches that it’s also OK to not feel like sunshine every day, explains that it’s normal for children to have cloudy days, and includes a “Feel Better Toolkit” to help on challenging days when it’s hard to find your light. Helping families bring simple mindfulness into their homes, it includes affirmations, meditations, and journal questions. Sunshine is Jesse Bennett’s second children's book. Inspired by her two children, Bennett hopes her books can help children believe in themselves and lead with a kind heart. She travels to local schools reading her books, and 25% of every book sold on a visit goes back to the school.

The Forest in the Trees by Connie McLennan, Rocklin Available at Face in a Book, Amazon, Barnes & Noble, and IndieBound In the branches of California's coastal redwoods, a hidden forest lives hundreds of feet above the ground. Unexplored until the ’90s, this "lost world" is home to various other trees, shrubs, giant ferns, salamanders, insects, and flying squirrels. A "House That Jack Built"-style verse introduces each new image, and sidebar facts explain scenes in reader-friendly scientific terms with vibrant illustrations, which the author hopes encourages continued preservation and study of our irreplaceable natural wonders. This is Connie McLennan’s 14th illustrated book and her first written work. A journalism major, she’s been awarded the California Reading Association’s Eureka! Nonfiction Children’s Book Award, among other accolades.

Steve Jones by HEATHER L. NELSON

Steve “S.R.” Jones often begins his romantic, surrealist-style paintings using photographs taken with a 1940s-era Graflex camera with a Polaroid back. Altering the color and texture using sandpaper or steel wool, he then paints and draws on the altered photo before adding found images or objects. Attracted to strange landscapes and figurative work, the Sacramento-based artist finds inspiration from other art and artists, in addition to walking, biking, kayaking, and fishing on the American River. Invited to show his work at over 20 local galleries (in invitational and group exhibitions) over the

| arts & entertainment | past 40 years, he’s also earned awards in several regional and national competitions, and is currently represented by JAYJAY in East Sacramento. HLN: WHAT’S YOUR EARLIEST ART MEMORY? SJ: I remember painting on easels in kindergarten. Drawing and painting continued to be my first love throughout middle and high school, and then I received my BA in fine art in 1978. After, I evolved to doing a combination of painting on photos and collage. HLN: HOW DID YOU DEVELOP YOUR CURRENT TECHNIQUE? SJ: Formal training in college was like other majors—you take [courses in] a little bit of everything. Instead of approaching a blank sheet of paper or canvas and having at it, I was most fulfilled by the methodology of printmaking (silkscreen, lithography, etching) in which you create images layer by layer. HLN: YOU LIKE TO EVOKE A SENSE OF "MYSTERIOUS NARRATIVE" IN YOUR WORK. CAN YOU ELABORATE? SJ: I’m influenced by the art movements of the surrealists and Pre-Raphaelites. Each of them, as well as other favorite artists, leave the viewer with some mystery or a sense of a story, even if the story isn’t entirely clear. A little mystery goes a long way. HLN: HOW DO YOU OVERCOME ARTIST’S BLOCK? SJ: I get into the studio and keep making stuff. Not everything will be wonderful, yet odds are some might. I just reviewed 75 new pieces with my dealers; we deemed 24 pieces acceptable, 15 maybe with some rework, and 36 not acceptable, which got destroyed.

Clockwise: Everything Inside Screams for Second Life, Jungfrau, Nothing is Right Side Right

HLN: ARE THERE ANY OTHER CHALLENGES YOU’VE HAD TO OVERCOME? SJ: For years, my work has primarily been a mash-up of oil paint and pencil on photographs of female nudes, landscapes, and found images. I think public sentiment such as #MeToo and #WeSaidEnough will lessen the amount of nudes in a lot of art, including mine. HLN: LOOKING BACK, WOULD YOU HAVE DONE ANYTHING DIFFERENTLY IN YOUR CAREER? SJ: I’m not sure I would have. Early on, it became apparent that I wouldn’t be able to support myself, much less a family, as an artist, so I bumped into a different field to earn a living. I have friends who sacrificed everything to be a working artist but that didn’t appeal to me. I still love making art, but it’s relegated to the sideline. Everything happens for a reason. jayjayart.com

Embrace Race A Parent’s Guide to Preventing Prejudice

It’s never too early to teach kids tolerance—especially in regards to race. But many parents don’t know how to address this tough but meaningful topic. According to experts, it comes down to age-appropriate communication, leading by example, and ensuring the conversation is open and ongoing. Keep reading for even more tips on raising race-conscious children. 28

“Before you begin a conversation with your child, think about where you stand on the issue of race. Reflect on any biases you may have and think about the example that you’re setting. Make changes, if needed, and research information about other cultures to educate yourself about the rich history of all the diverse people around you.”— Nkechi Nzerem-Johnson, MD, a pediatrician with Dignity Health Mercy Medical Group “Evaluate your own belief system and mindset. Modeling with your actions is one of the most important aspects of parenting. If you aren’t aware of your blind spots (unintentional or intentional) it will affect the way your children view the world.” —Ashlee Janzen, MS, LMFT, ashleejanzenlmft.com “A wonderful resource and book to share with children is Bread is a Simple Food: Teaching Children about Cultures. The author, Cherry Steinwender, shows children the diversity of bread from cultures around the world, but explains that they are all bread, [which helps children internalize the oneness of the human family].”—Jan Merrill, Vice President, Racial Healing Project, GlobalMarketplace.org “Older children often look to the adults in

their lives to see how race is handled. Do you have friends of different races? Are prejudice statements made in generality about ‘all those people?’ Are the same courtesies extended to all races? Are people looked at as individuals rather than stereotypes? This is where actions speak louder than words. Strike up conversations with people who are different from you, learn their stories, and share them with your kids. Confront a negative racist statement in front of your children and explain why you did it.”—Nancy Ryan, LMFT, therelationshiptherapycenter.com “Teach your children to love and respect others, always be kind, and treat others the way they would like to be treated. Let them know that it’s okay to notice that [people are] different on the outside, but explain that despite our differences we’re all human beings who deserve love and respect. Empower your children to know that they can help change the world by speaking out against racism.”—Nkechi NzeremJohnson, MD, a pediatrician with Dignity Health Mercy Medical Group “Take time as a family to learn something about a different culture or ethnic group. This should be done diligently—watching a TV show with a minority cast or dining out at an ethnic restaurant doesn’t [count]. Instead, find out why they prepare and cook their dishes as they do, which will lead to a conversation about cultural acceptance and talking about race. If you live in a diverse neighborhood, get to know someone different from you by introducing yourself as a family and asking questions.”—Rashad Baadqir, Sacramento State lecturer in the Department of Ethnic Studies; executive director of the Center Pointe Initiative on Race and Culture Dialogue Project “Children learn most when a situation is relatable. Age-appropriate books that address the importance of race, inclusion, and the beauty of diversity can help explain the concepts in language that makes sense to them. Real-life experiences are also a great teaching opportunity.”—Ashlee Janzen, MS, LMFT, ashleejanzenlmft.com “For a child under six years old, when they notice someone with a different skin color, say something like: ‘Yes, we have different skin as people, just like there are different types of flowers. It's nice to have different colors.’ A child between the ages of 7-10 begins to notice similarities and differences, as they learn how to group things in school. Remind them that just because people fit into one group because of one characteristic that they also have similarities with another group. For example, ‘Yes, your friend at school may have a different skin tone, but you both like to run and play sports.’"—Nancy Ryan, LMFT, therelationshiptherapycenter.com “Answer your children’s questions as openly and honestly as possible using age-appropriate language. If they’re not asking questions, you can start a conversation by asking what their thoughts are about what they have seen.”—Nkechi Nzerem-Johnson, MD, a pediactrician with Dignity Health Mercy Medical Group “One of the best experiences of my daughter's life was having a Japanese exchange student. We experienced a different race and culture firsthand, including customs and food. Hate is taught— along with acceptance, love, and belonging. We can all do a better job.”—Nancy Ryan, LMFT, therelationshiptherapycenter.com RESOURCES

to be an advocate for those who cannot advocate for themselves. It is Woman to realize harmony through higher principles and values of integrity, honesty and understanding.

We are a tribe built with the intent to serve and it is our purpose to heal others with the human hand and the human heart. We endeavor to walk alongside our community: To inspire those whose paths we cross, to remind them how precious they are to humanity, to shed light when life feels dark, to hold their hand as they discover their purpose in life, and to always believe in miracles. Through massage therapy and the practice of skin care we facilitate healing on the physical layers of our community. Our Hot Belly Yoga™ and Seven Spiritual Laws of Yoga classes provide our students with the tools to reclaim their individual power. It is Primordial Sound Meditation that expands our students’ awareness and gives them the opportunity to rewrite the story of their own life. We are blessed to be able to celebrate the magic that each one of our community members hold. Forever, we will be humbled by those that walk through our doors to give us the honor of being a part of their journey. It is today and every day that we stand tall together for what is true, for what is pure, for what is honest, and for what is Woman.

M

y name is Jennifer Tommasini, the owner/director of The Gift of Kids Daycare and Preschool. I’ve lived in El Dorado Hills for 18 years and I have kids ages 20, 23, 9 and 10 years of age.

My journey into the childcare field began in 1999 when I was left disappointed in my search for ”the right” childcare for my son. After going through many programs and with my daughter on the way (now attending Chico State), I began to reflect upon my family’s needs. It was then that I changed my career focus and ventured into childcare. My mission is to provide a nurturing, loving, safe and educational environment for every child. On June 10, 2000, I opened my home to three newborns, two 2-year-

SECTION

olds and a 3-year-old. I immediately knew that this was my calling. Everything felt so natural. I went back to school full time for early childhood education and started my own preschool program that incorporated home-cooked meals, planned outings, and practiced an advanced curriculum with structured activities that fostered learning.

In 2007 I opened a small pre-school with 60 families while continuing my in-home daycare. In 2010 I expanded again, bringing my preschool and in home-daycare under one roof - The Gift of Kids Daycare and Preschool. It has been a dream to serve so many children and give families the satisfaction I never felt when my son was in daycare. I pride myself on offering a safe place for families to bring their children. The Gift of Kids currently has 32 wonderful, loving, professional teachers and over 200 children. We provide care for infants, preschoolers, private kindergarten, and school agers. Although the size seems large, the classrooms have a homey feel where the teachers truly care about each child’s development. We work together on communicating with parents and developing each child’s individual needs. It delights me that so many children have the opportunity to experience our program.

Even now during this challenging time we have served our community with cautiion and all safety measures in place. AUGUST 2020 |

She was exposed to critical care, trauma, obstetrics, lots of on call hours and sleepless nights. As she entered her 50's she found her own health starting to decline and sought out a healthy aging physician. After experiencing the benefits she sought out the fellowship of regenerative and healthy aging through the American Academy of Anti-Aging Medicine. She opened an office in 2014 and continues to grow and expand her knowledge into this evolving field of medicine. Rather than prescribing medications and bandaging diseases she looks for the "root causes" and integrates each system in the body together. She also looks at environmental, genetic and lifestyle factors which result in "dis-ease". Her continued and expanding practice utilizes bioidentical hormone replacement, thyroid and adrenal optimization, GI healing, testing for heavy metals and IV nutrition and chelation, advanced lipid testing, and advanced blood sugar testing.

Give us a call, we would love to answer your questions and support you in maintaining a healthy lifestyle.

Eighteen years ago, I never thought the twitching of my thumb or the stiffness of my arm would lead to a diagnosis of Parkinson’s disease. As the lack of my motor control became more obvious, I knew it was time to become educated and look into resources that would help slow the progress of this disease. I learned from my Doctor that Roseville Health and Wellness Center offered an exercise program that was designed specifically for those with Parkinson’s Disease (Parkinson-Wise Exercise Program). This program was exactly what I needed! Men and Women in my age range (60’s-80’s) who are battling Parkinson’s, workout together for an hour, up to three times per week. We work on balance, strength and endurance. The exercises are beneficial and the social aspect with others makes working out that much more enjoyable. For me, the comradely is as important as the exercise! Parkinson’s progression and symptoms vary from person to person. With direction from the Parkinson-Wise Exercise Program, I work diligently to improve my ability to move easier. She recently said she is so thankful her Parkinson’s exercise program is considered essential because most days she forgets she has Parkinson’s disease, without exercise she would most likely be immobile. NOW OFFERING ONLINE VIDEO LESSONS Q: WHERE’S A GOOD PLACE TO START IF I WANT TO UPDATE MY HOME WITH LIGHTING? A: Since we spend most of our time

in the kitchen, it’s a great place to start a lighting update. Replacing the dropdown fluorescent box or PAR (Parabolic Aluminized Reflector) bulb lighting with new LED trims will make a huge impact and update to your home. We recommend a color temperature ranging from 27003000 Kelvin. Next, layer in decorative pendants and add under-cabinet lighting, which places light directly on a work surface. Lastly, utilizing dimmers where you can gives you the most flexibility between task and mood lighting.

Q: DOES WATER FLOSSING REPLACE REGULAR FLOSSING? A: No, because water flossing doesn’t

remove plaque in areas where the teeth have contact (like where you feel the floss snap when pulling it down in between your teeth). Water flossing is great for use along the gum line and in embrasure spaces (the V-shaped spaces between teeth) and should be used in conjunction with regular flossing. —Baban Mahal, DDS 6049 Douglas Boulevard, Suite 9, Granite Bay, 916-791-4133, babanmahaldds.com

SET THE STAGE 5 Curb Appeal Updates

I

t’s always a good idea to step outside on your front lawn and take a good, long look at your home’s exterior. Is it time to touch up the paint, update the patio furniture, and revive its overall appearance? Here are five easy ways to maximize your crib’s curb appeal.

PAINT THE FRONT DOOR

The front door is a direct representation of your home’s interior style and gives you the opportunity to show off your flair for design without breaking your budget. The color you choose can also make or break your home’s overall exterior appearance. Go bold with yellow, turquoise, or even orange to show off your creative style; or, if you’re looking to add sophistication, opt for a clean white, gray, or black. In between bold and toned down? We love the way red doors make an exterior color palette pop!

GET THE LOOK

SWAP OUT THE PATIO FURNITURE

Now that summer’s in full swing, it’s time to dust off the patio furniture or update your look entirely. This year’s trends feature modern chair and table silhouettes, a blue color palette, and plenty of greenery. If you’re deciding on a modern scheme, look toward chairs and ottomans outfitted in contemporary materials like aluminum. This look is perfect for a home that’s either transitional or contemporarily styled because the blocky yet streamlined furniture reflects the house’s unique exterior. Blue and citrus palettes provide a pop of color and can be added via hurricanes, cushions, and throw blankets. Add greenery throughout the space using pots, trellises, garden boxes, and hanging planters.

3

Modern House Numbers makes high-quality, precision-crafted numbers from solid 3/8” recycled aluminum in a variety of finishes, fonts, and heights. Starts at $25.30, modernhousenumbers. com

UPDATE YOUR FENCING

Though often used as an extra layer of security, fences also offer a glimpse into your personal style by the type and colors you select. While backyards require a little extra security for kids and pets, front yard fences can be a little lower to show off your manicured lawn and updated porch accessories. Lower fences also make your front yard look larger and more spacious—perfect for homebuyers on the hunt for the perfect outdoor setting.

4

REVAMP THE GARAGE DOOR

5

ADD IN ACCESSORIES

The Kichler Elias LED Outdoor Wall Light is dimmable, energy-efficient, and perfectly suited to mid-century modern or contemporary home exteriors. $149.99 at Lighting Unlimited, Cameron Park, lightingu.com Modern Masters Front Door Paint is non-fading and quick-drying with a satin finish, ensuring a vibrant door for years to come. $39.99 at Warehouse Paint, locations in Auburn, Citrus Heights, Rancho Cordova, and Sacramento, warehousepaint. com

If your garage is visible from the street, consider revamping it to instantly add curb appeal. Should you just need a fresh coat of paint, you’re totally equipped for the job—though you may want a helping hand or a second opinion. If you’re looking to install a brand new door, however, look into hiring a professional with precise skills. If you’re planning to take this route, there are several materials to consider; wood offers an array of design options but is pretty pricey; steel is a better price point, but it’s prone to rusting should you live in a humid area. Make sure to talk over design options with your garage door installer should you need extra assistance or even a permit. Finish off your exterior’s spruce-up with a few simple accessories. Adding new house numbers in a material like chrome brings extra oomph, while shutters help a traditionally styled home shine. Another must-have is outdoor lighting, which has the ability to highlight your great landscaping and newly painted door or cast unsightly shadows and potentially scare visitors. From sconces to accent lighting, you have many options to choose from. This might be another area where you want to consult a professional before moving forward.

Wine

Lover’s Guide BY EMILY PETER-COREY & MEGAN WISKUS

Our wine region has finally made it on the map. (Cheers to that!) And whether you’re looking to taste award-winning Barberas or juicy Zins amid picture-perfect vineyard views, or journey to a restaurant where you can wine and dine, we have you covered. Keep reading for some of the area’s top tasting rooms, wine trends to watch out for, best bottles for $25 or less, and more.

What’s Trending? Photo ©Evgeniy Kalinovskiy - stock.adobe.com. Other photos courtesy of their respective companies or organizations.

From rosé all day to screw caps, it seems there’s always a wine fad waiting to be discovered. Here are some of the latest buzzwords. Submitted by E16 Winery 8085 Perry Creek Road, Somerset, 530-6206200, e16winery.com Cans. Like 'em or kick 'em, this familiar vessel offers a new drinkability factor and price point for emerging wine enthusiasts. Rhône varietals. With changing climates globally, warm-weather varietals—such as Mourvèdre, Syrah, and Grenache—flourish, creating beautiful, fruit-forward flavors that are vibrant and rich. Sustainability. Aligning with growers and vineyards whose goal is to not only produce great fruit but also keep regenerative soil practices and resource management at topof-mind is paramount.

Lover’s Guide Submitted by Wise Villa Winery 4200 Wise Road, Lincoln, 916543-0323, wisevillawinery.com Home is where the wine is. With everyone sheltering in place and the closure of restaurants and bars, people have turned their kitchens into creative zones! Reports are showing a triple-digit increase in recipe hunting and online wine purchases, as people look to pair their meals with good wines or put wine in their food.

Education. People finally have time to read up on the wines they’re drinking, which lends to delightful conversations about the beverage in their glass and encourages people to explore new varietals. Submitted by Element 79 Vineyards 7350 Fairplay Road, Somerset, 530497-0750, element79vineyards.com Alternative packaging. Whether it's boxed or canned wine—like Element 79's Color Sparkling Rosé—the demand for a more convenient product to bring on adventures is trending. Some wineries are even offering wines "on tap" in their tasting rooms, allowing customers to take them home in crowlers. Orange wine. This ancient winemaking style is becoming more widely available (including Element 79’s 2016 Amber) and gives new-or old-world wine drinkers something to talk about. The beautiful, vibrant aromatics mixed with the luscious tannin provided from skincontact fermentation results in wine that appeals to every palate. Balance. Young winemakers are stepping back from the big, bold, and extracted wines of their parents and working to find balance of acid, fruit, and oak by letting varietal and regional flavors take the spotlight, which allows the unique terroir of California's diversity to shine.

Gifting. With so many people missing out on celebrations, the easiest way to celebrate together is to order wine for yourself and/or a loved one. It makes for a great happy hour on Zoom as well!

Submitted by Miraflores Winery 2120 Four Springs Trail, Placerville, 530-647-8505, mirafloreswinery.com Sustainability. Wines that are crafted using sustainable practices, such as Fish Friendly Farming (a certification program for agricultural properties managed to restore fish and wildlife habitat and improve water quality), continue to trend. Planting cover crops like legumes and rye grass, which add nitrogen and nutrients back into the earth; using drip lines to irrigate; and incorporating fencing in a way that keeps corridors open for wildlife are other ways wineries practice sustainability. Sparkling wines. More wineries in the El Dorado AVA are starting to offer at least one sparkling wine, and the styles they’re being done in are spread across the board.

Bottom left Lone Buffalo photo courtesy of Lone Buffalo. Other threeLone Buffalo photos by Anne Doupnik, Heirloom Photography. Miraflores photos courtesy of Mira Flores.

Rosé. With hot weather upon us, dry styles of rosé are still more popular than off-dry styles, but rosé as a whole continues to trend.

Submitted by Lone Buffalo Vineyards 7505 Wise Road, Auburn, 530-823-1159, lonebuffalovineyards.com Sparkling wines. Not just for special occasions anymore, locally produced sparkling wines have become more popular as everyday wines, especially for hot summer days. A just-right, brut-style bubbly (not too sweet and not too dry) makes every drink a celebration. If you really want to be "on trend" and treat yourself, pop the cork on a light and refreshing sparkling rosé. Nontraditional white wine varietals. Look beyond Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc for white wines that do great in our local climate, like Torrontés, Albariño, Vermentino, and Viongier. Light, crisp, and fruity, they’re perfect for backyard picnics and lounging by the pool. Chilled reds. Traditionalists—please cover your ears and avert your eyes: Red wines can be chilled! Contrary to popular myth, there are plenty of red wines that you can drink slightly chilled in the summer months—a Beaujolais, Gamay, or a light and fruity Grenache can all be experienced in a whole new way with a light chill from your fridge. Local wine tasting. Local wineries have reopened and are offering not only wine tasting but flights and wines by the glass, too—seated alfresco in their airy spaces often overlooking the vineyards. This is a great way to get out of the house in a safe, relaxed environment while still maintaining social distance and supporting your local economy. Find maps of many local wine regions at sacwineandale.com.

Hawaiian Style Ribeye Steak

M Garlic Shrimp Pizza

“THE HAWAIIAN STYLE RIBEYE—A FLAMESEARED HALF-INCH THICK SLAB OF STEAK IN A SOY/GARLIC-BASED SAUCE WITH ENOUGH RED CHILI FLAKES TO MAKE YOUR UPPER LIP SWEAT— WAS BURSTING WITH FLAVOR AND SPICE.”

uch like the Carly Simon lyrics made (in)famous by a ketchup commercial, “Anticipation is making me wait, is keeping me waiting…” In this case, the anticipation of waiting for the restrictions to ease, so I could try the new Iron Horse Tavern. Fortunately, the sun came out, the rain subsided, and—best of all—restaurants began to open. I took this opportunity to venture to the Palladio and try the Folsom edition of Iron Horse Tavern: the sister restaurant to its popular Sacramento namesake. The gastropub has a steakhouse feel to it with dark button-tuck, leather-upholstered booths and burnished red paint trimmed in black reclaimed wood. But thankfully, Iron Horse is not another stuffy steakhouse, as evidenced by my appetizer: tuna poke nachos. Their most popular app is a highly engineered structure of wonton chips, Sriracha mayo, spicy soy, wasabi cream, sweet onions, nori, tomatoes, avocado, and chopped ahi tuna. It was so good I considered ending the review right there and going home completely satisfied. Next from the kitchen came the garlic shrimp pizza—a hand-crafted pie that unfortunately lacked seasoning and possibly a squeeze of lemon for some acid balance against the richness of the fontina cheese and parmesan cheese sauce. This was possibly due to the new COVID-19 rules, i.e., no condiments at the table, so I won’t judge too harshly, (I would order it again with those options available). So, do you order a steak at a place that looks like a steakhouse, but isn’t? Yes, although with one caveat: You have to like heat! The Hawaiian style ribeye—a flame-seared half-inch thick slab of steak in a soy/garlic-based sauce with enough red chili flakes to make your upper lip sweat— was bursting with flavor and spice. The entrée also came with green beans, red bell peppers, and roasted fingerling potatoes, and the sauce had just enough sweetness to leave me craving another bite. If you’re considering dessert, no doubt you’ll witness the pyramids of powdered sugarcovered orbs ferried from the kitchen to the dining room. The beignets here have attained a cultlike following; likely the first words mentioned after saying, “I ate at Iron Horse Tavern!” are “Did you have the beignets? OMG!” True story. My theory is they’re made from pâte à choux dough, which explains their size and airiness. Whatever they’re made from, they’re delicious—and served with a trio of sauces: vanilla bean crème anglaise, berry compote, and chocolate ganache. Iron Horse Tavern would be a fun date night option, happy hour spot, or casual place to drop-in for a beverage and a bite. HOURS: 10 a.m.-8:30 p.m. (Sunday);

FOODIE FIND

DID YOU KNOW? Cooking and eating in the Philippines has traditionally been an informal, communal affair; meals tend to be served all at once and not in courses. The cuisine centers around rice and the combination of sweet, sour, and salty flavors. Due to Western influence, food is often eaten using a spoon and fork—but no knife! Many Filipinos eat with a fork in their left hand and a spoon in their right, pushing food onto the back of the spoon with the fork. Filipino cuisine is complex and has been influenced by many countries, including Spain, China, Malaysia, Japan, India, and the U.S. Source: Wikipedia

Kultura Café // With the surplus of dining establishments dotting the local landscape, one cuisine has been curiously underrepresented: Filipino food. Enter owners RJ and Karla and their first foray into the restaurant scene: Kultura Café. Kudos to the hardworking pair, as their soft opening was two weeks before the shelter-in-place order was mandated. They have, like many other businesses, managed to adapt through a faithful following and curbside takeout. I stopped in for my first real experience with Filipino foods that weren’t named lumpia or chicken adobo (both of which I’m a big fan of!). Karla recommended I try the Lechón Plate with pork belly. (Thank you Karla—it was excellent.) Crispy cuts of pork belly with very little fat, most of it rendered off in the cooking process, allowed the natural pork flavor to shine. Served with a heaping helping of white rice and Mang Tomas dipping sauce, it was more than plenty. I also treated myself to a Lychee Iced Tea with boba and lychee jelly pearls. Excuse me for being a boba neophyte, but I’m on board the boba express now! Soon, you'll be able to enjoy your food in their modern, sleek space, but in the meantime, you can order takeout or delivery via DoorDash. 2164 Sunset Boulevard, Suite 206, Rocklin, 916-918-8600, kulturacafe.squarespace.com —Lorn Randall Photo by Dante Fontana

PRO TIP

When building a wellbalanced summer salad, layer greens, add a fruit, a healthy fat such as avocado, and a protein like meat, nuts, or seeds.

Photos courtesy of their respective companies or organizations.

Fresh produce is one of the highlights of summer, [but did you know] eating locally can actually build your immunity, prevent allergies, and strengthen your connection to the cycles of nature? Freshly harvested food is also easier to digest—it contains more prana or "life force." In fact, the older the food, the less prana and the more strain it places on your digestion. So, whenever possible, eat food that’s been harvested moments before or the day-of consuming. Then, slow down and tune into your appreciation for the Earth, the elements, and the farmers that grew your food.”—Brigette Faieta, The Argonaut Farm to Fork Café

Fried Green Tomatoes with Pickled Onion

Submitted by Courtney McDonald of Four Tines Farm, 9140 Mount Vernon Road, Auburn, 530-392-2649, fourtinesfarm.com • 3/4 cup apple cider vinegar

• Vegetable oil for frying

• 3/4 cup sugar

• 6 medium, firm (unripe) tomatoes, sliced ¼ inch thick

• 3/4 cup water

• 1 red onion, thinly sliced into • 1 tsp. Dijon mustard rounds • 4 oz. baby arugula • 1 cup all-purpose flour • 1 tsp. Old Bay seasoning • Pinch cayenne • 2 eggs, lightly beaten • 1/4 cup buttermilk • 2 cups fine yellow cornmeal

• 6 slices cooked bacon (reserve bacon fat for the vinaigrette) • 1 basket mixed cherry tomatoes, halved • Salt and pepper, to taste

Heat vinegar, sugar, and water in a small saucepot. Bring to a simmer and remove from heat. Add the sliced red onion and set aside to pickle for about 10 minutes. Drain the onion and set aside, reserve the pickling liquid for the vinaigrette. Pickled onions can be made up to three days ahead. Set up three rimmed plates or wide bowls for breading the tomatoes. In the first plate, mix the flour with the Old Bay seasoning, cayenne, and a generous pinch of salt and pepper. In the second bowl, mix the eggs and buttermilk. In the third bowl, mix the cornmeal with a generous pinch of salt and pepper. Heat a large cast-iron skillet over medium-high heat. Add enough oil to cover the bottom of the pan about 1/8

inch. Toss the tomatoes first in the flour mixture, then coat in the egg mixture, then in the cornmeal. As you bread the tomatoes, place them in the heated oil and fry to a golden-brown color, flipping over to brown evenly. Drain on paper towels. Make the vinaigrette with 2 tbsp. pickling liquid, Dijon mustard, and ¼ cup bacon grease. Season with salt and pepper. To serve, line a large platter with the baby arugula, saving a few leaves as garnish. Drizzle some of the vinaigrette over arugula, then top with fried tomatoes, cherry tomatoes, pickled onion and cooked bacon. Garnish with more arugula, then drizzle remaining vinaigrette over the top. Serve immediately.

Get a harvest box of summer produce every week through October. Pick-up sites include Roseville, Rocklin, and Auburn. 916-409-9440, naturaltradingco.com
