#holidaymadness Y

ou know those people. The ones obsessed with everything Christmas. They’re fanatics for twinkle lights and festive décor as far as the eye can see. They begin playing Christmas music on their way to buy Halloween candy. They have stockings for their goldfish. They have a special stash of candles and the latest DVDs just in case they forget someone on their list; oh, and they have enough wrapping paper to rival any hoarder. Did I mention they have no less than five perfectly decorated and differently themed Christmas trees throughout the house? You will receive cookies from them soon, just because. These folks both exhaust and amaze me. Admittedly, I might be a little jealous—but mostly annoyed. Before you banish me as the Grinch’s spawn, let me explain. Over the years, I’ve often caught myself saying, “bah, humbug” at any utterance of, “It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas!” However, my somewhat party-pooper sentiments are not because I don’t love the holidays, because I do! I love the “reasons for the season”…you know, the spiritual aspects as well as the notion of giving to others without expecting anything in return. I love the togetherness we embrace as we gather to celebrate. I love the smell in the air outdoors and the aromas wafting inside. I love the emotions and energy of it all. But why do I have to buy tchotchkes for everyone at the office and send cards to people I never talk to…or want to, for that matter? Perhaps it’s just my personality. I’m well-intended always, but have little patience for doing just for the sake of doing. This notion got me thinking…since I already know what personality type I am, I wonder what kind of “gifter” I tend to be? And wouldn’t you know, there’s a quiz to determine this! Yep, just Google it. Apparently, there’s a unique way everyone goes about gift-giving, from a useful orientation to dramatically lavish. Upon careful consideration of each question, it (unsurprisingly) turns out I’m the following: practical, realistic, no-nonsense. My gifts are useful, appropriate and custom-tailored to each person. In my opinion, the best gifts are ones that someone will actually use and that won’t break the bank. If your gifting style doesn’t fall under the category of one who finishes six months in advance—like those mentioned in my first paragraph—you will be relieved to find our annual gift guide, “50+ Fab Finds For All,” with ideas for just about every personality. For even more seasonal madness, don’t miss “10 Holiday Cocktails” in The 10-Spot, “3 DIY Gifts For Teachers” in Our Kids, a bounty of area holiday happenings in the Calendar, and the perfect hue for your Christmas décor in Home Design (I, on the other hand, will be lucky to get my tree up before the man in red arrives, ha!). In all seriousness, this month we hope to satisfy your every celebration craving. Until the ball drops, cheers to a stress-free and FOLLOW US ONLINE: meaning–filled holiday. Enjoy! — Desiree

Q&A

gettoknow

Q: What advice would you give to your younger self? A: Don’t worry about doing all the fun stuff. Focus on your education and work hard now; you can have fun later. Q: What comes to you naturally? A: My sense of humor. I like to think I’m funny, and I like to make people laugh. Q: What’s your biggest pet peeve? A: Salt on the counter. When people cook and they use salt, sometimes it sprinkles all over the counter. I always have to go back and wipe up any salt they left behind. Like my mom says, “A good cook is a clean cook.” Q: Are you high or low maintenance? A: Low. A good time to me is spending the day with my family, watching a good movie and having a good meal; it doesn’t take much to make me happy.

ina Younan always loved to cook, but after her father’s sudden death from a heart attack when she was 14 years old, she decided to work hard and focus on her education and becoming a chef. Her love of cooking came from cooking with her family—especially with her father on weekends. As a way to cherish her father’s memory, she began preparing his favorite meals. She had to convince her mother to allow her to get her culinary arts certificate instead of a bachelor’s degree—but these days, her mother couldn’t be more proud. At just 24 years old, “Chef Rina” is the executive chef at Oakmont of Roseville, a luxury retirement community that boasts farm-to-fork fine dining. season’s eatings

PlacerGROWN and Foothill Farmers’ Market

What’s in Season: Meyer Lemons You’ve likely heard the proverbial phrase, “When life gives you lemons, make lemonade,” but what if you want your lemons to do something more daring? Well, with a bag or two of Meyer lemons, you can! Thanks to Martha Stewart and other famous chefs, Meyer lemons have gained popularity in recent years.

SELECTION AND STORAGE Experts recommend looking for ripe Meyer lemons that are heavy for their size, have a dull finish and a slight give when gently probed. A ripe Meyer lemon has a fragrant aroma when you gently rub its skin and won’t show any signs of green. In general, small- to mediumsized Meyer lemons have a stronger flavor than larger ones, which tend to have thicker skin and less juice. Meyer lemons keep well at room temperature for up to two weeks, but will last even longer if stored in a plastic bag in the refrigerator. FOR THE RECIPE TO MAKE PRESERVED MEYER LEMONS, VISIT STYLERGBR.COM. — Susan Belknap For details on how to pair with wine and where to buy Placer County farm-fresh produce, wine, meat and other local products, visit placergrown.org. 12 stylergbr.com - December 2014

ask the expert

Q: How do I ensure pool water is safe for swimming after finding a dead animal in it?

A: Begin by removing and disposing of the dead animal. Chlorine is a very effective sanitizer. Typical chlorine levels—between 1.0 and 3.0 in a standard pool—with balanced water chemistry will eliminate unwanted pathogens. Your pool-filtration system is designed to trap organic materials, but as a precaution, you may choose to run your filter for a slightly longer time than the normal run. If you still have concerns, consult your pool professional about super-chlorinating your pool, which will raise the standard levels over a short period of time—24 to 48 hours. Although inconvenient and sometimes gross, there is no need to drain the pool. —Josh Pappas, Service Manager Aquatique Pool Service 6049 Douglas Boulevard, Suite 27 Granite Bay 916-797-1700 aquatiquepoolservice.net

DID YOU KNOW? Meyer lemons were first identified in 1908 by Frank N. Meyer, who collected a sample of the plant that was primarily used as a decorative houseplant in China. The Meyer lemon, a cross between a lemon and a mandarin orange, tends to be sweeter and less acidic than regular lemons, allowing it to be versatile and used in dishes that call for lemon fruit and not just lemon juice. Meyer lemon’s fruit is yellow and tends to be a bit rounder in appearance than an ordinary lemon. The thin skin is one of the fruit’s most appealing aspects, as the zest can be used over vegetables, in salad dressings, for marmalades, and even lemonade. Meyer lemons add a pop of flavor to an array of cocktails and desserts and can also be roasted with root vegetables, chicken or fish (by removing the seeds and cutting into thin slices). An adventurous contributor for the explorative palate, Meyer lemons are especially delicious in this month’s Preserved Meyer Lemons recipe, which can be found at stylergbr.com.

rocklin parks and recreation Season of Fun

C

elebrate the holiday season with your family and friends at Rocklin’s Tree Lighting on Saturday, December 6, from 4-7:30 p.m. at Heritage Park (next to Old Saint Mary’s Chapel in downtown Rocklin). Enjoy food, hot chocolate, cookies, crafts, horse-drawn wagon and train rides, local school and church choirs and jazz bands. The best part? It’s free! Parking will be available at the Rocklin Train Station lot and elsewhere. With Christmas right around the corner, don’t forget to purchase your tickets for Breakfast with Santa—an event geared toward preschool-aged children and their families—on December 20. A tasty breakfast, provided by local Boy Scout Troop 29, allows your family to dine together and share your experience with Santa. After breakfast, attendees are treated to a visit at King Kandy’s Workshop where they’ll engage in a variety of activities hosted by local businesses and organizations. This annual affair has sold out the previous three years so don’t wait to purchase your tickets. Concerned about keeping the pounds off during the holidays? How about trying Clogging on Thursday mornings with Janice Hanzel, a certified clogging instructor with over 30 years of experience teaching American folk dance. The little ones (and their caregivers) can join instructor Alycia Tonna for Pre-Preschool or an Itty Bitty Workshop where they’ll learn, socialize and meet other local parents. Have fun creating and playing together at these parent-participation playgroups, workshops and activities. — Tracie Colamartino

Lolli and Pops

M

ove over Sweet Factory, there’s a new candy store in town! Underneath the enchanting façade of a London sweet shoppe (think Harry Potter meets Willy Wonka), Lolli and Pops offers every kind of candy you could possibly imagine. Its four themed rooms—Gummies and Sours, Chocolate Library, Wonka Room, and Gumball Room—offer only a fraction of the shop’s 8,000 varieties of sweets. From jelly babies (for you Doctor Who fans) and chocolate-covered potato chips (aka “Chocolate Chips”) to the strangely delicious gummy chicken feet and gumballs galore, Lolli and Pops quite literally has it all—even a wall of giant candies with half-pound Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups and Crunch bars as big as iPads. The only things missing are a chocolate river and some Oompa Loompas! On my last visit, I sampled the Dark Chocolate Sea Salt Caramels and am officially hooked on the beautiful consistency between chewy and soft and salty dark chocolate. I also took home Japanese Pudding Kit Kats, which bake in the oven and taste like creamy, crispy crème brûlée. Their incredible handmade Truffles and cloud-like Rice Krispy Treats are also worth trying. If your day at the mall has turned into a bit of a drag, stop in and grab a pail full of pick-me-ups at Lolli and Pops, 1151 Galleria Boulevard, Roseville. 916-783-0180, lolliandpops.com. — Adrianna Valencia December 2014 - stylergbr.com 13

ecember 13 marks the inaugural year of Run for Compassion, a fund-raiser to support the Placer Food Bank— which works with various local organizations dedicated to helping those vulnerable in the community such as veterans, the homeless, seniors and foster youth—and its partners. Event organizers hope to raise at least $20,000 —money that will go back into Placer County communities. An additional effort to assist locals in need will be the “blanket drive,” where runners are asked to bring a new or gently used blanket to donate to those who need a little extra warmth this winter. Attendees can choose to walk or run a 5K or 12K, and kids can even participate in their own quarter-mile dash or one-mile run. Adult entry fees are $35 for the 5K until December 7 and $40 from December 8-13, $40 for the 12K until December 7 and $45 from December 8-13; youth fees (17 and younger) are $20 for the 5K and $25 for the 12K; the kids’ quarter-mile dash and one-mile run are free. After the Sunset City plan was shuttered, the photographs were gifted to the Crocker Art Museum in 1965 where they remained lost in storage until 2002.

Number of Whitney family members and close friends buried in the famed Whitney pyramid-shaped tomb on Whitney Oaks Golf Course, including George and Sophia, and son Joel Parker, who expanded the Whitney Ranch and built the Whitney Oaks mansion. Interestingly, a small plaque inside the tomb indicates that the family gardener, Sam Edwards, is buried nearby in an unmarked grave.

and everyone was making lots of swirls. I created a picture and my friend did hers, and our teacher made the biggest deal out of my friend’s but not mine. Ever since, I’ve often worked with swirls; I guess in a way I’m still trying to make that picture better. HLB: What made you gravitate toward glass and stone? CB: I like glass because it’s reflective and illuminated. You can see many different things, depending on how you look at it and from what angle. I also like stone and found items because you can mold them, making them into whatever you’d like. HLB: How have your mosaics evolved over the years? CB: I started 10 years ago by tiling my house, my walls and my floors. I graduated from that to doing small wall hangings with backer board, broken plates and glass. Now the majority of my work is with glasson-glass or glass-on-Plexiglas. HLB: What words do you live by? CB: My motto is to, “love art in pieces,” and what is a mosaic but pieces of art that make a whole? Really, you can draw inspiration from anything and make it beautiful. HLB: Have you ever had difficulty finding inspiration? CB: When I’m stuck, I stop doing art and just go out and enjoy the sunshine. I do something totally different and somehow get new inspiration by seeing things in a different light. HLB: What’s in store for the future? CB: I’d like to possibly open a storefront called Mosaics and More. I’m also toying with the idea of starting a pop-up art truck. While watching a TV program about pop-up clothing boutiques, I thought, “Why not have a truck that could showcase my mosaics?” I would visit different areas of the city for a few hours, get people involved in DIY art activities and share what mosaics are all about.

fter retiring as recreation supervisor from the City of Roseville in 2009, Celeste Budd initially found her well-deserved freedom difficult. Like so many of us, she identified herself by what she did, and it took time to reestablish what her post-retirement passion would be. Eventually, the lifelong artist harnessed her love of teaching, and blended it with her skill of creating mosaics— from found materials like recycled glass, stone and pebbles—into her two workshops at Roseville’s Utility Exploration Center: Introduction to Mosaics, and Mosaics with Stained Glass. Budd also showcases her work on consignment at local craft shows as well as at the current exhibition, 30 x 30, at Blue Line Arts. “I teach...to hopefully develop in my students an appreciation for the care it takes to create them.” HLB: As a young artist, what was your biggest influence? handmade holiday 3 DIY Gifts for Teachers by Adrianna Valencia

F

3 / CHRISTMAS PEN MUG (AGES 9-10)

inding the right gift for your kid’s teacher shouldn’t be difficult, but rather express how much all of their hard work and dedication means to you and your little one. Most importantly, it should be fun! Ditch the gift cards for one of these quick and easy crafts that the kids—and their teachers—will love.

Materials: • 1 solid-colored mug (any Christmas color, but white works best) • Rubbing alcohol • Metallic, Christmas-colored Sharpie permanent pens/paint pens • Stencil cutouts or Christmas-shaped templates • Scotch tape • Q-tips

Materials: • 1 large pinecone • Gold acrylic paint or gold spray paint • Ribbon • Christmas-colored pens • Blank gift tags • Scotch tape • 1 box of See’s Candies Little Pops 1. With parental help, paint the pinecone gold and let dry for 15-20 minutes. 2. Have your little one write a nice message on the gift tag for their teacher. 3. Attach the tag to a pretty ribbon and bow tie it to the stem. 4. Put loops of tape on the ends of the candies and stick them inside the pinecone’s holes. 5. Once filled, hold it up to the light and watch it shine!

26 stylergbr.com - December 2014

2 / HAND “SANTA”-TIZER (AGES 7-8) Materials: • 1 mini bottle of hand sanitizer • White, red and black construction paper • Red and metallic gold Sharpie permanent pens/paint pens • Ruler • Scotch tape • Glue stick • Colorful Christmas ribbon (skinny) 1. Measure the length of the hand sanitizer bottle and cut the red construction paper into a strip to cover the whole label. Tape it, making sure the tape is at the back-center. 2. Cut a strip of white paper into a 1 X 2-1/2 inch strip and the black into a 1/4 X 5 inch strip. Glue the white strip down the center of the front of the bottle, and the black strip around the middle (Santa’s belt). 3. Draw a gold square (Santa’s belt buckle) around the middle of the black strip of paper. 4. Cut a rectangular piece of white paper. Write “Hand Santa-tizer,” decorate it, and tape it to the back of the bottle. 5. Cut out a piece of ribbon and tie it into a bow at the bottom of the cap.

1. Wipe the outside of the mug with rubbing alcohol to clean it, and stick the stencils or templates to the mug, pressing down firmly. 2. Cover the outside with whatever designs and patterns you want, making it look festive. 3. Peel off the stencils or templates and fix any mistakes with a Q-tip and some rubbing alcohol. 4. Bake your mug in the oven on a middle rack at 425-degrees (let the oven preheat with the mug inside to avoid cracking) for 30 minutes.

ith her children nearing school age amid the financial crisis of 2008, Donna Sangwin was disheartened to see art programs in her community on the chopping block. Thanks to her corporate background, she knew usable materials were thrown out by businesses every day, so when a friend introduced her to the concept of creative reuse, Sangwin saw an opportunity to affect change. That same year, she founded ReCreate, a Roseville-based program dedicated to reducing waste through art and education. “I think one of the most important things we are doing is sparking the imagination and creativity of children,” shares Sangwin, ReCreate’s executive director. “Our materials are not traditional art supplies. We encourage kids to make animals, robots, vehicles, costumes and more with these items.” ReCreate’s 3,300-square-foot space houses the ReUse Store—a pay-what-youcan resource for local educators, crafters, and kids of all ages—and EcoArt Studio, where participants in classes, camps and birthday parties fashion works of art from clean, usable materials donated by businesses throughout the region. “For kids and adults, ReCreate provides the chance to see new possibilities in things we think of as trash,” shares ReCreate Board Member Vicki Mongan. “Since every invention is really making something new out of things that already exist, ReCreate is a fun way to teach the next generations of inventors to think creatively.”

ReCreate’s most popular program, More Art! Less Waste!, focuses on waste reduction education and equips 15,000 students

annually with information that ranges from the amount of trash generated daily in California (on average, more than four pounds per person) to the simple changes they can make in their daily lives to reduce and reuse waste. Colene Jenkins, a third grade teacher at Maidu Elementary, has hosted ReCreate in her classroom for the past four years and says she’s seen a positive impact—not only in her students, but her own family. “It is amazing to see the creativity that goes into each project and the excitement the kids experience when their product is complete,” she shares. “Personally, I also love [it] for my own children. My daughter was so proud one year when she made all her Christmas gifts at ReCreate.” In total, ReCreate’s of programs, including the Rolling ReCreate truck, which makes appearances at local fairs and festivals, prevent an estimated 65 tons of usable materials from entering the waste stream each year. As she looks to the future, Sangwin hopes to bring the STEAM Train, a mobile unit focused on providing science, technology, engineering, art and math education to upper elementary and middle school students, to life. “For me, it is all about the earth my kids are going to inherit from our generation. I want the world to be clean… and vibrant with creativity,” she says. “I want them to know I am doing all I can to help make sure that happens.”

What Hue Are You? by Kerrie L. Kelly, ASID

W

hen it comes to hauling out holiday décor, it might seem untraditional to opt for blue rather than green, or brown instead of red, but if you want to change things up this season, try experimenting with one of these color add-ins.

BROWN If you love a traditional, classic take, add brown accents to your natural green décor. The earthy color brings an elegant look to seasonal decorations, blending especially well with wood and neutral tones for a sophisticated look.

PINK Get the little ones excited about decorating with a pink palette; thanks to its explosion of color, this kid-approved combination is an unexpected treat when paired with green, silver or blue. Alternatively, keep it subtle with a softer shade of pink or pair with silver for a vintage-inspired look.

with orange or yellow details. Use round, citrus-toned ornaments to fill a glass jar, or oranges with clove for a centerpiece.

YELLOW Bright and cheerful, yellow can serve as a youthful addition to a white holiday interior or a flocked tree. The golden glow from holiday lights may be just enough for you; or, for some extra flair, add yellow tinsel.

Purple has long been known as the color of royalty, so bring a regal touch to your holiday décor by mixing it with red, white or chocolate brown. Dark purple makes the red stand out and is an especially great option in a room full of wood.

GOLD This rich, elegant color brings sparkle to any room, and especially shines when you include lights.

SILVER Avoid an over-stimulating holiday season by opting for the clean, fresh look of white and silver. Liven up this light pair with texture from glittery accessories and mercury glass.

LIME GREEN For those who just can’t seem to kick red and green—which is understandable— use lime for a contemporary twist. The zingy hue can provide just the right amount of lift for the holiday season.

ROYAL BLUE

Let your tropical vacationing vibe inspire this palette. If you’re not excited about adding fruit to your tree, get the same feel

Add some character to your December designs by bringing in royal blue. This bright, vibrant color complements the red details you may already have and gives holiday decorations a fresh, playful feel

home for the holidays

Regardless of the time of year, navy is practically a neutral and goes well with anything, including holiday decorations. Mix it with a bit of silver or gold sparkle and white accents for a clean, crisp look. For a more casual look, use a dark denim tablecloth for the holiday dinner, navy ribbon to tie up birch branches or evergreen boughs to welcome guests.

dmittedly, a small shopping center just off of Douglas Boulevard and Interstate 80 isn’t the first place I’d think to find sushi, but seeing the Umi Sushi sign was a pleasant surprise. One of the first things I noticed upon sliding into a sleek white leather booth and resting my forearms on the chocolate-rich wooden table was pop music playing—loud enough to notice, but not loud enough to feel compelled to sing along. The vibe was decidedly casual and the décor was sparingly hip, in a chic minimalist kind of way. As we settled in with some hot tea, our first dish came out: Ganja. I know what you’re thinking, but Umi is not that kind of friend. Ganja in this context was spicy tuna wrapped in Japanese mint leaves, tempura battered, fried, and served with a ponzu

dipping sauce. The aromatic mint, earthy tuna and sharper notes of ponzu made for a lovely meander through flavor town. Next up was an offering from the “Gigantic Rolls” section, and the description is not a marketing ploy. These rolls are definitely best cut into several bites. We really enjoyed the balance of the 49er, which boasted spicy tuna, crab salad, cucumber and avocado, plus tuna, salmon, roe and thinly sliced lemon atop. One of the more inventive combinations was the Snow White roll, which featured supple white tuna, verdant Japanese bean sprouts, crunchy deepfried garlic (of course the Italian in me orders garlicky sushi) and ponzu sauce. We were also impressed with the entire section of vegetarian rolls; all too often vegetarians are relegated to the scant offering of “hand rolls” that are heavy on the seaweed and 48 stylergbr.com - December 2014

Dessert offerings included the go-to strawberry and mango mochi (always a favorite with the toothsome layer of pounded rice giving way to the sweet ice-cream center), but next time I’m trying the tempura banana with mango ice cream. Between the inventive appetizer and intriguing desserts, Umi Sushi has me taking a second look at strip-mall shopping centers. • Umi Sushi, 107 South Harding Boulevard, Suite A, Roseville, 916-788-8333, umiumiumi.com.

SPAGHETTI WITH TOMATO AND SHRIMP Downtown Italian: Recipes Inspired by Italy, Created in New York’s West Village by Joe Campanale, Gabriel Thompson and Katherine Thompson (Andrews McMeel Publishing, 2014, $35) • 1/2 cup panko (Japanese breadcrumbs) • 2 tbsp. freshly grated Parmesan cheese • 1 tbsp. finely chopped fresh flat-leaf parsley • 1/8 tsp. kosher salt, plus more for seasoning • 1/4 cup extra virgin olive oil • 8 garlic cloves, thinly sliced • 1 tbsp. fresh oregano leaves • 2 cups canned, crushed Italian tomatoes, with juice • 1/4 tsp. red chili flakes, plus more as needed • 12 oz. dried spaghetti • Shrimp (16/20 count), peeled, deveined, halved from head to tail, then halved crosswise Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Spread the panko on a baking sheet or in an ovenproof skillet. Place in the oven to toast

for about 4 minutes. Stir and continue baking until golden brown, about 4 minutes more. Transfer the hot breadcrumbs to a bowl. Stir in the Parmesan, parsley, and the 1/8-teaspoon salt. The Parmesan will melt slightly and coat the breadcrumbs. Set the breadcrumbs aside and let cool to room temperature. Store in an airtight container at room temperature. The breadcrumbs can be prepared several days in advance. Place 2 tablespoons of the olive oil, the garlic, oregano leaves, and a generous pinch of salt in a large sauté pan or Dutch oven. Cook over medium-high heat, stirring frequently, until the edges of the garlic start to turn golden brown, about 2 minutes. Immediately add the tomatoes, chili flakes, and another generous pinch of salt. Decrease the heat to medium-low and simmer for 8-10 minutes. Taste the sauce and add more salt or chili flakes if necessary. The sauce should be slightly spicy. Keep the sauce warm over low heat. Meanwhile, bring a large pot of water to a boil. Season generously with salt. Add the spaghetti and cook until just al dente, slightly less than the suggested cooking time on the package. Reserve the pasta water. Meanwhile, a minute before the pasta is done, add the shrimp to the tomato sauce, season with a pinch of salt, and stir to combine. Using a slotted spoon or tongs, add the pasta and the remaining 2 tablespoons olive oil. Simmer over medium-low heat until the shrimp is cooked through, about 1-2 minutes, thinning the sauce with pasta water as needed. Taste and adjust the seasoning. Serve in warm bowls and garnish with a generous sprinkle of the toasted Parmesan panko crumbs. Serves 4.

KNEE DEEP BREWING COMPANY HOP SHORTAGE IMPERIAL TRIPLE IPA Knee Deep Brewing Company’s two owners, Jeremy Warren and Jerry Moore, decided to take their love of brewing and make it a reality; in 2010, they opened in Lincoln, California, to rave reviews. Since its inception, their brews—known for being full-flavored, uniquely blended and packing quite a punch—have received several awards. The brewery’s new location in Auburn boasts a huge space, plus a state-of-the-art tasting room and oftentimes, food trucks. Clocking in at 11.3-percent ABV, Hop Shortage Imperial Triple IPA delivers quite a bitter, hoppy zing. This month’s Spaghetti with Tomato and Shrimp recipe is a perfect companion; despite the beer’s high alcohol content, it’s nicely mellowed out by the dish’s sweet, savory flavors, while a pleasant malty finish brings out the sweetness of the tomatoes and plays well against the salty shrimp. —Heather Zamarripa, Executive Chef, 36 Handles Pub & Eatery

NOW PERFORMANCE Rocklin 916-303-0587 nowperformance.com nikedmondson.com

Describe your business. Did you find it, or did it find you? I provide a weekly medication management, assessment and monitoring service for seniors to help them safely “age in place” and remain independent in the home of their choice. I was a supervisor when I worked in skilled nursing, but I wanted to get back to working one-on-one with patients. During that time, I saw many seniors recovering from falls due to being overmedicated. I determined that families needed a medical professional in their corner, so I started PMM. How are you involved with both the community and your customer? I provide free public service talks about “basic medication management for seniors” at independent communities and various other places. Many seniors are on a fixed income and cannot afford outside help, so getting some additional information on how to be safe and stay out of the emergency room is especially critical for them. What life accomplishments are you most proud of? It’s an amazing feeling to see a senior get that look of “ah-ha” during one of my talks when I know they finally get it and understand something about their meds they didn’t before; or seeing a family member’s face when they let out a deep breath of relief because there’s an RN watching over their loved one every week, and the senior is no longer over-medicated and groggy. Where do you go when the going gets tough? I’ll play my guitar, read, watch a movie or take a long walk. What’s your hidden talent? Playing guitar and singing. What’s your biggest job perk? Seniors are near and dear to my heart, and I love knowing that I make a difference in their quality of life. What is your favorite local business other than your own? Trader Joe’s, hands down. I love their variety and great customer service.

Describe your business. Did you find it, or did it find you? Now Performance is a multimedia publishing company that focuses on mental and physical training for baseball players and coaches. We have three books in print and on Kindle, as well as an interactive website featuring coaching certification and over 150 videos. I also teach, coach and speak to players of all ages on mental and physical performance. As a high school and junior college baseball player, one day I’d be very good and the next day awful. I knew I could play physically, but it was being mentally consistent that was tough to do on a daily basis. I decided to see a sports psychologist, which in turn changed my life. By learning to be relaxed, present in the moment, confident and stable—on and off the field—I improved my consistency, performance and abilities. With these tools I was able to land a Division I scholarship and went on to play professionally. I knew when I was done playing that I wanted to teach players what I had learned—how to achieve our personal best. With my background in the game, I can weave the mental, physical and mechanical training together to teach a performance approach that benefits players of all levels. Who is your role model in business or in life, and why? My parents—they’re steady, positive and upbeat in every facet of life. As a player chasing the dream of being a major leaguer, they were always the most encouraging and supportive; now, as an entrepreneur, they continue giving me unconditional love. What’s your favorite place to eat out locally? I love the farm-to-fork revolution in the area and enjoy places like Source Global Tapas and The Chef’s Table. I also love Thai Basil, Ruen Thai and Thai Chili. Fat’s Asia Bistro is also a special place to me. What’s your favorite local event that you go to? I’m a sucker for the local farmers’ markets, especially the one at Whole Foods Market at the Fountains on Tuesdays.

dear santa… All I Want for Christmas by Tom Mailey

I

66 stylergbr.com - December 2014

I don’t want novelty gifts. Whoopee cushions and fake dog poop are funny, yes, always, but no. I don’t want toys or tools. No fishing rods or a new tackle box. (Even though I need one. And no, that’s not a hint.) N othing from B rookstone —no p o l i s h e d - s te e l p n e u m a ti c to e n a i l clippers, motorized grill cleaning brushes or ceiling projection alarm clocks. I don’t want a drone. I swear to all things holly and jolly: There isn’t a single material thing under the dim winter sun that I want—not one gift I could unwrap that would have me regretting anything I just typed. But that doesn’t mean I don’t want anything for Christmas. I do. One thing. My family. I want to be with them, laugh with them, argue with them, eat-untileveryone’s-drowsy with them. I want to sit at the kitchen table and play a game of Monopoly that takes way too long. I want us all lolling on the couch watching A Christmas Story and It’s a Wonderful Life and then maybe The Hangover or

Superbad. I want us to go for a hike or a bike ride or up to Homewood and ski until our legs are wobbly. I want my daughter visiting from L.A. to hang with her mom, and I want them to hit the mall, grab coffee—or a drink (she’s 22 now)—and come home with armfuls of oversized retail bags. I want my boys to flop down in the back room and play Call of Duty until they can’t blow up another zombie. I want a ragged game of touch football in our cul-de-sac. I want the house so loud I’m longing for quiet. I want us all together—in the house we raised our kids—for just a little while again. The presents under the tree can be for them or their mom, because if we’re together, as trite as it may sound, I already have everything I need. Although, OK, an In-N-Out Burger gift card would be nice. If you insist.

don’t want a tie for Christmas; or a coat or a shirt or pants or socks, or especially underwear; I don’t want a gift card to Home Depot, Sportsman’s Warehouse, Cheesecake Factory or InN-Out Burger. I definitely don’t want gadgets or things that take batteries. I don’t want stuff I have to put together or take apart, or anything that comes in that damned bulletproof packaging that requires a chainsaw to open. I don’t want a chainsaw. I don’t want a weekend getaway or a round of golf. I don’t want cologne named after athletes, rappers or thickshouldered animals with horns. I’ll skip on magazine subscriptions and the complete first season of anything on DVD. Like Clark Griswold, I am vehemently opposed to membership in the Jelly of the Month Club. I don’t want electronics—no iPhones, Androids, pads or tablets. No smart watches either, and I definitely don’t want Google Glass, if it’s even available, which I hope it isn’t, and never is. I don’t want books—although I love them. I don’t even want beer—though I love that, too. I don’t want gear from my favorite spor t s teams— no je rseys , jacket s , hats, commemorative balls, bats or bobbleheads. I don’t want anything autographed , framed or limited edition-ed. No tickets to a game, either (have you seen what they want for parking?). I don’t want an espresso maker, a French press or that thing that makes soda when I can get it at the store, already bottled and ready to drink. I don’t want anything that comes with the words “As Seen on TV” or has “Chia,” “Sham” or “O-Matic” in its name.
