my first date dress - 24 years later
I wore this dress on my first date with the manfriend on July 6th, 2001. I'm so glad I kept it (and the man!) for all these years.
Adele Simpson
1960s maxi dress
Adele Simpson (1903–1995) helped define mid‑century American fashion with beautifully tailored, practical, yet stylish pieces that empowered everyday women—and earned a permanent place in fashion history. A favorite of the first ladies of the time, she was also instrumental in the founding of the Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA).

Summer is all about letting go & having fun, and that's exactly what I'm doing with this magazine.
Welcome to the first Summer issue of VINTAGE! When I started this magazine as a way to showcase pieces from my Shop Stylaphile vintage store, the plan was to do just two issues a year...Spring and Fall. But the response has been so great (thank you!) that it is now a quarterly publication.
Will it eventually become a monthly? Not anytime soon. With the exception of an occasional intern, this is a one-woman production. I do all of the writing, editing, graphic design, and most of the photography. (I get a lot of help from my Adobe Creative Cloud and Stock subscriptions!)
I do all of this because it's fun! It's my passion project and my creative outlet. I love vintage. I love writing. I love graphic design. It's a labor of love. I do make a little money from this magazine, for example, if someone buys a vintage piece or through affiliate links. And I plan to keep it free for all subscribers. But, for now, it will stay a quarterly publication.
This inaugural Summer issue is all about the dress. I'm a dresses girl...always have been and always will be. There's just

something so easy about throwing on a gorgeous dress with a pair of sandals and heading out the door. They provide instant style, and in this issue, there are decades of dresses, decades of style.
Also, if you happen to be visiting New York City this summer, I've provided a few suggestions for a little "vintage" summer culture. Hope you enjoy!

vintage summer in the city

It's hot...sometimes insufferably so. But it's also magical. Carrie Bradshaw-walking-down-thestreet-kind-of-magical. So many New York minutes waiting to be had. And so much history. If you're visiting New York City this summer, here are a few recommendations for a little vintage culture.

BRUNCH AT THE ODEON
The perennial hot spot where Warhol and Basquiat were once regulars
If you're a fan of 80s pop culture, you'll know why this sign looks so familiar. The exterior was featured on the cover of Jay McInerney's 1984 novel Bright Lights, Big City. I go here not only for the food or the atmosphere, but also the history. My two favorite artists of all time - Andy Warhol and Jean-Michel Basquiat - were regulars here back in the day. And the vibe here is still very hip...very cool...and very French! Definitely try the Odeon Cosmopolitan and the French onion soup. And definitely make a reservation.
145 West Broadway @ Thomas Street

THE OUTSIDERS ON BROADWAY
Completely deserving of its Tony, even though I cried all the way through
I booked front-row seats because the book and movie were an integral part of my childhood. It's one of the best shows I've seen, but I cried the whole time. Sometimes silent sobbing...mostly full-on ugly cries. A few laughterthough-the-tears moments for which I was grateful. I found out right before the show that a dear friend from high school had just died, and the circumstances were painfully close to the plot of the play. It was by far the most cathartic way I've ever processed this type of grief. (P.S. Stay gold, Aerial.)
Jacobs Theatre - 242 West 45th Street

THE ORIGINS OF PRIDE
It all started right here on Christoper Street
The first official gay pride parade was held in New York City on June 28th, 1970. It was a celebration of the one year anniversary of the Stonewall Riots...a police raid on the Stonewall Inn in Greenwich Village that turned into a riot, then a resistance. That resistance became the foundation for gay rights in America and across the world. You can visit the first national monument dedicated to the LGBTQ+ movement right across the street from The Stonewall Inn, and the 2025 NYC Pride Parade will be held on Sunday, June 29th starting at 11 a.m.

MAXIMIZING SUMMER
Maxi dresses are the perfect summer staple because they provide the maximum (see what I did there?) amount of style with the least amount of effort. Don't have time to put together an outfit? Didn't get that spray tan in? Forgot to shave your legs? No worries! The maxi dress has got you. Here are three of my favorite vintage maxis from the shop that can make your summer a little easier...a little breezier.

I The First Date Dress...24 Years Later
wore this dress on my very first date with the manfriend. It was on Friday, July 6th, 2001.
We'd met three nights earlier at Jake's Dilemma on the Upper West Side of Manhattan.
I saw this dress in the window of a store in the Chanin Building on 42nd Street and Lexington Avenue. I'd walked by it a couple of times on my way to work. I thought it was pretty, with its bubble hem and beaded detail, but I didn't really want to spend the money on it at the time.
On Thursday, Carlos called and asked me out. I bought the dress on my lunch hour. It worked. We've been together ever since our first date at Moonlighting, which is now e'S Bar on Amsterdam.
I haven't worn this dress in many years, but I'm so glad I saved it. It's a little tighter than I remember it being back then, but that's okay.

I may not have the same body I had twenty-four years ago, but I've still got the dress. And, more importantly, I've still got the man.
Check out our "meet cute" video on Jake's Dilemma's Instagram page.
