Dear St. Vincent-St. Mary High School Community, Our students and faculty have had a busy year. Our Model United Nations Team has traveled to many cities across the country competing against other high schools and has continually finished at or near the top of every competition. Thank you, Ruby Kofsky, for all the time and passion you give to this program.

Our Rocket Team continues to do remarkable things as well. We were again invited to participate in the NASA Student Launch Program competition in Alabama. In fact, our students were so impressive that NASA recommended that they patent their findings related to three dimensional control of a magnetically levitated object. Simply amazing! Thank you, Bob Engels, one of our distinguished teachers, for all the time you give to our Rocket Team.

Our athletic teams had a great Winter Season! Our boys and girls basketball teams, cheerleading team and wrestling team qualified for state tournaments. Congratulations to all of our teams. Most notably impressive is the fact that STVM student-athletes have an average GPA of 3.4! This is due to their commitment to education and to the wonderful faculty here at St. Vincent-St. Mary.

As always, we thank you for all your support as we continue to provide our students with a solid academic and faith-filled foundation. This is the foundation upon which St. Vincent-St. Mary High School students have built their lives.

Leave a legacy at St. Vincent-St. Mary St. Vincent-St. Mary is blessed with a history of generous, unwavering support from alumni and friends. Gifts of all amounts are important in our efforts to fulfill our educational mission rooted in the Gospel “to enlighten and inspire through Catholic education.”

There are many ways to make a gift in support of Catholic education at St. Vincent-St. Mary High School. As you consider a gift, you may hear the term “planned giving” used. But what is Planned Giving, really? Aren’t all gifts “planned”? No one makes a gift accidentally. Do they? Planned Gifts are, however, different from an annual, outright gift. As the name implies, a good amount of thought and consideration precedes a Planned Gift. It may seem overwhelming but it does not have to be. Generous donors consult attorneys, accountants and professional advisors to construct a gift that, when properly structured, is mutually beneficial for both the donor and St. Vincent-St. Mary High School.

Planned Gifts may be outright gifts during the donor’s lifetime and can be funded with cash, appreciated securities, real estate and other personal property, and can accomplish a donor’s charitable goals, and can also have positive financial and tax implications for the donor, with the additional benefit of the donor being able to witness the positive effects of the gift at work. Often, Planned Gifts are deferred, or made upon the donor’s death via a will, trust or other estate planning vehicle and can be funded with cash, life insurance, IRA’s or other individual retirement vehicle. Such gifts can provide the added benefit of reducing estate tax and the ability to make a larger gift upon your death that might have been possible during your lifetime. It is wise to make us aware of an estate commitment, or other deferred gift, to ensure that your intentions for your gift can be met to the fullest extent possible.

Dear STVM Community,

Thank you so much for all your support of St. Vincent-St. Mary High School. It is a delight and privilege to work at this fine institution and to call this place my home and my alma mater. This is in no small part due to the dedication of people like yourselves who support our school, attend our events, and promote all the good that STVM has to offer. I am sincerely grateful for this.

This will be my last letter to our community as Principal, as beginning with the 2019-20 school year, I will be returning to the teaching faculty as a full-time teacher.

I have truly enjoyed this opportunity to lead our school and have loved being Principal, but my passion is working with our students in the classroom. I am very eager to enter this next chapter in my career here at STVM. I am also eager for Mrs. Kim Gorr to assume the role of Principal. Kim has worked closely with me for two years as our Dean of Curriculum, and I believe that she is incredibly well prepared and well equipped to seamlessly take over our school’s leadership and make our school even stronger. She has my full support, and I ask that you show her the same kindness and welcome that you did for me when I became our Principal. Great things are in store for our future!

Please know that in my new role as classroom teacher, I will still be eager to support our school and interact with all of our community members and supporters. Please don’t hesitate to say hi when you see me at school events and activities. My role may be changing, but my support for the STVM Fighting Irish will never waver! Many blessings to all of you - be assured of my continued prayers for the STVM community.

Academics Dear STVM Community,

It is with great excitement and pride that I write this letter of introduction to you as the newly appointed Principal of St. Vincent-St. Mary High School. I am honored to have the opportunity to lead a school with such strong traditions and a history of excellence. I have been dedicated to the field of education for more than twenty years, most recently serving as Dean of Curriculum at STVM for the past two years. Before moving to Ohio in 2017, I was fortunate to hold many teaching and leadership positions in the Diocese of Greensburg where I discovered that Catholic education is where I belong. My diverse experience also includes a variety of administrative and teaching positions in several Pennsylvania Public School Districts. I am eager to continue to utilize my skills as an instructional leader at STVM. My husband, Chris, our two youngest sons, and I live in Canton. Our oldest son, Alex, will begin graduate school at the University of Arizona this fall while Andy will begin his sophomore year at the University of Utah. Aidan will be a sophomore at STVM and Aaron will be an eighth grader this fall.

As Principal, I will make every effort to maintain and enhance the legacy of success established at STVM. I will continue to build my strong relationships with teachers, parents, students, and community partners. This summer I will work closely with Mr. Brownfield to ensure a seamless and productive transition. I will collaborate with teachers to ensure that our students are exposed to curriculum and instruction that is both engaging and challenging. We will continue to provide academic experiences for our students that are rigorous, relevant, and within the scope of a true Marianist education.

I believe that every student deserves a quality, faith-based education and that can only happen when the school and our families work together towards the best interests of our children. I look forward to working with you as a team to help each student at St. Vincent-St. Mary High School achieve success. I have an open door policy and welcome your input and ideas.

Dear STVM Alumni, Family, and Friends, St. Vincent - St. Mary is my home away from home! As many of you know, I have just completed my first semester as Campus Minister and honestly can’t wait for the 2019-2020 school year to begin. Last year I joined the STVM teaching staff after spending 14 years as a junior high teacher at St. Hilary School and another 10 years in the Parma City Schools.

However, I first became part of the STVM family back in 2009 when my oldest son chose to spend his four years of high school as a member of the “Fighting Irish.” The STVM tradition was new to me at this time since I grew up in the Cleveland area, attending Parma City Schools, and marrying my high school sweetheart, Stephen. Today our family bleeds “green and gold” since we now have three STVM alumni in the family--Bailey STVM ‘13, Griffin STVM ‘16, and Hope STVM ‘18. Yes, we are now empty nesters but have three dogs in our home and nearly 700 students to keep me very busy.

What I love most about St. Vincent-St. Mary is how we are blessed daily with the opportunity to follow our Catholic faith in every aspect of our lives, whether it is academics, athletics, or any other extracurricular activity. In addition, our students can impact the lives of others within the school community, as well as outside of it, through our retreat programs and local outreach. These varied and amazing opportunities give each student at STVM the unique chance to grow and share in his or her faith each day.

As a newly sponsored Marianist school, it is an exciting and busy time in STVM Campus Ministry. As part of the Marianist Family, we live by the Marianist charism--to be formed by Mary for the mission of Christ and by living by her words, “Do whatever He tells you.” Specifically, we live these words through our newly formed “Marianist Ministries.” Marianist Ministries and our Marianist LIFE (Living in Faith Experience) teams both work to build Christian communities by leading the following activities: Liturgies; Prayer Services; Big/Little Sibs for our incoming freshmen, Christmas Adopt-A-Family; Meal Ministry (making brown bag lunches for those in need); Tutoring Ministry (after school programs at local elementary schools); Pennies for Patients (Leukemia and Lymphoma Foundation); Rice Bowl (Catholic Relief Services); and numerous retreat opportunities.

Speaking of our retreats, at STVM we offer Days of Reflection for all grade levels, two overnight retreats for Juniors, and, of course, our senior retreat experience called Kairos. Many of our seniors will tell you the Kairos Retreat is the highlight of his or her four years at STVM. The retreat is an experience of Christian community, with a series of talks given by peers and adults. God's love is truly visible and enfleshed during these special days together. The ultimate mission of the Kairos Retreat experience is to create an environment away, a moment in "God's time", in which each participant is awakened to the ever-present love of God and comes to an awareness of "God in all things."

My dream as Campus Minister is for every STVM senior to attend the Kairos Retreat. Unfortunately, the four-day experience is costly for some of our students and I am saddened when a student must miss this life-changing opportunity purely for financial reasons. So, with this in mind, I am kindly asking if you are interested in sponsoring one of our students, or wish to help with monthly Marianist LIFE events, to please contact me at cspinner@stvm.com. Over 160 students were selected as Student Ambassadors this year. These students gave hundreds of hours of service to the school. They volunteered at Open Houses, Showcase, Grandparents Day, the President’s Reception and many other events held throughout the year. Greeting guests and being advocates for the school, they share their experiences at STVM with our community and visitors. We cannot thank them enough for all they do to help with events and to be positive role models for STVM!

HOW DOES MODEL UN BENEFIT EDUCATION? Model UN has a wide range of educational benefits for students. More so than many other extra-curricular activities, Model UN strengthens 21st Century Learning Skills, educational hard skills, and emotional soft skills. Rocket Team

STVM's NASA Student Launch Team traveled to Alabama at the beginning of April to compete against various student launch teams around the nation. At the end of the week, STVM was awarded the "STEM Engagement Award" for their diligence in informing others about rocketry and other space-related topics.

The process for selection to the NASA Student Launch program is highly competitive. In order to have an opportunity to submit a proposal, our school had to have a TARC (Team America Rocketry Challenge) national qualifying team and then have that team place in the top twenty at the national competition. STVM has competed in TARC National Finals for 11 consecutive years. This last year, STVM placed 13th in the nation, allowing us to submit a proposal to NASA. In response to NASA’s request for proposal, we submitted a detailed proposal indicating the rocket design and its intended engineering payloads that adhered to NASA’s published statement of work. The STVM proposal was approved by NASA and is one of only seven high schools accepted into this national collegiate level competition. This project is a massive team effort and takes hundreds to thousands of man hours and dedication from all members of the team.

Band &IrishDancers St. Patrick's Day Parade in Chicago March 16, 2019

Ninety-five students, 23 Irish Dancers and 72 Marching Band members, traveled to Chicago to participate in the city's annual St. Patrick's Day parade. During their weekend in Chicago, they enjoyed some of the city's most famous tourist attractions. They rode the ferris wheel at Navy Pier, visited the 360 Observatory on the 94th floor of the John Hancock building, and attended mass at St. Norbert Catholic Church, which houses a St. Patrick relic. And of course, they were able to witness the Chicago River being dyed green. The Marching Band and Irish Dancers travel every other year to participate in a parade outside of Akron. In the past, they have gone to Disney World over Spring Break and to other St. Patrick's Day parades, including New York City and Cincinnati.

Highlights of the trip included seeing the Broadway production of Hamilton, and an exclusive "meet and greet" with VM03 alumnus Patrick Vassel, associate director of Hamilton.

Marianist LIFE Marianist LIFE (Living In Faith Experience) is a national faith-formation program rooted in Catholic and Marianist tradition and targeted to the needs of high school students. LIFE offers students an opportunity for fellowship and fun in a caring, upbeat context.

LIFE is based on Fr. William Joseph Chaminade’s vision for building a community of communities to change the world. Marianist LIFE provides students at Marianist and non-Marianist institutions opportunities to share faith, to learn from each other, and to become instruments of peace.

The Marianist LIFE summer programs are a faith formation experience for high school students and their moderators. Students enjoy a week-long experience of small faith communities, sacraments, prayer, leadership development, social justice education and fun!

Moderators, who include campus ministers, youth ministers, teachers and adult volunteers, arrive before the students to prepare, as well as to build their own communities of faith.

Students Kairos is a four day retreat for our seniors. The mission of the Kairos Retreat experience is to create an environment away, a moment in "God's time", in which participants may be awakened to the ever-present love of God and come to an awareness of "God in all things."

Sierra Spoerndle

Abby May, sophomore at St. Vincent-St. Mary High School, has been selected to attend the Intel International Science Fair (Intel ISEF) in Phoenix, Arizona. Over 1800 students, from more than 75 countries, will be intvited to the fair this year. In order to be invited, students must attend a sponsored science fair and be selected as a grand prize winner. Abby was chosen as the grand prize winner while attending the Northeast Ohio Science and Engineering Fair at Cleveland State the week of March 11. At this fair, Abby also won first place in the biological science category and the Cleveland Clinic - Dept of Biomedical Engineering Award.

Congratulations to STVM Junior Sierra Spoerndle who has been selected to participate in the 2019 U.S. Youth Ambassadors Program in Ecuador.

Sierra competed in the Global Youth Ambassador Scholarship competition this past fall and was recently notified that she was selected as one of only 120 American students to receive this prestigious award. She will be traveling this summer to Ecuador through the U.S. Department of State's Global Youth Ambassador Program to stay with a host family and engage in community service from June 17-July 10

Junior

Abby has spent her childhood on her family farm in Portage County. Using her experiences on the farm, she developed her project to test how different types of fertilizers containing different levels of nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium would affect different types of plants. Abby’s enthusiasm about her project was the key to her success.

She explained the importance of this project to a group of biomedical professionals and pharmacists and convinced them that her work was worth top honors beating out juniors and seniors with in depth biomedical projects. Abby’s future plans are to study agricultural engineering in college.

Students Eagle Scouts

Since 1912, the Eagle Scout rank has represented a milestone of accomplishment—perhaps without equal—that is recognized across the country and even the world. “Eagle Scout” is not just an award; it is a state of being. Those who earn it as youth continue to earn it every day as adults.

An Eagle Scout IS an Eagle Scout in perpetuity.

Congratulations to three members of the STVM Class of 2019 who have achieved this prestigious rank- Andrew Ewald, Jacob Kulig and Matthew Takacs. As part of the requirements for Eagle Scout, each of them had to develop and lead an Eagle Scout Project. Andrew directed the creation of new shelving in the STVM band room. Jacob organized the building of six benches for the Portage Park Districts' Hike and Bike Trail. And Matthew managed the construction of 12 sanctuary tables for his church.

The Akron-Summit Holocaust Art and Writing Contest We are excited to announce that senior Deviana Lal was been awarded first place in the Akron-Summit Holocaust Arts and Writing Contest!

The annual Holocaust Art and Writing Contest provides an opportunity for young men and women to examine the history of the Holocaust and to creatively express their reaction to man’s inhumanity to man, while engaging in high-quality learning. Deviana and her STVM English teacher, Ms. Bradley, have been awarded a trip to Washington DC. Also, Deviana and STVM will each receive $100 in honor of a first place win.

The 2019 theme was "Lessons of the Holocaust: Opposing Hatred and Discrimination 'It Started With Words.'" Congratulations to these STVM students who received honors for their work: Art Division

On Friday, December 28, 2018, STVM alumni baseball players gathered for a reunion in the Costigan Baseball Facility.

Wrestling Reunion On Wednesday, Feb. 13, 2019, alumni wrestlers gathered for a reunion in the Cosgrove Wrestling Room before heading over to the LBJ Arena to cheer on our Irish wrestlers vs. Hoban. Alumni enjoyed light refreshments, catching up with former wrestlers, and getting a look at the new State Champions, Placers, and Qualifiers board.

Cameos of Caring Recipient Troy Portis VM 06 and his wife Dana Portis at the Cameo of Caring Gala November 10th. Troy was one of the Cameos of Caring Recipients, recognizing his contributions to healthcare in Akron.

Future Medics Lieutenant Brent Scarbrough VM02 of both the Akron Police and Fire Departments came in to speak with Merrylou Windhorst's Future Medics Club students. He informed the students on what it is like to work in a few different medical fields and what he sees in each about a daily basis.

Missionary Stephen Dages VM14 spoke to Freshman classes in November.

He shared about the challenges he will face in his missionary trip to Tanzania, Africa for two years (i.e. how he will miss family and friends and the "comforts" of America). He talked about how he wanted to challenge himself to grow, expanding his "comfort zone", and how he felt God was calling him to do this work. He then answered any questions the students had.

We wish Stephen the best during his mission trip.

Melanie is currently living in Spain teaching English and Budapest was one of the cities she was visiting during her spring break. Mrs. Drumm was on an Easter trip to Budapest.

Speaker Series

In October, Mayor Dan Horrigan VM81 visited STVM and shared his insights on the City of Akron and answered questions from community members in attendance as part of our Irish Speaker Series. The Senior class at STVM were also in attendance and were able to ask Mayor Horrigan questions as well. Thank you for stopping by and meeting with our community!

Our February speaker series featured STVM graduate and retired police office Michael Hutson VM77. Lieutenant Mike Hutson gave an overview of the police training program, "Building Mutual Respect and Community Trust". Thank you Mike for sharing this very interesting and relevant topic to our community!

Fr. Jacob Bearer from St. Francis de Sales parish will speak to our students and community on Thursday, September 19.

Men's Night Out 2nd Annual

The second annual Men's Night Out event was held on Thursday, February 21 at the Costigan Baseball and Softball Training Facility. Andre Knott VM96, sideline reporter for the Cleveland Indians, was our guest speaker. Over 65 guests attended the event. All proceeds from Men's Night Out went to Showcase 2019 and helped purchase items for the Live Auction. Thank you, Andre, for once again making Men's Night Out a fun and successful evening!

How did your experience at STVM help you in your college and work career?

Brian Windhorst VM96

NBA Reporter and New York Times Best Seller Brian has been at ESPN as an NBA reporter since 2010, where he appears on television, radio, podcasts and writes for ESPN.com. Before that, he worked for two years at the Cleveland Plain Dealer covering the Cleveland Cavaliers. He started his journalism career in 1994 at the age of 16 when he began working for the Akron Beacon Journal. He worked there for 16 years, eventually becoming the youngest traveling beat writer in the NBA at age 25 in 2003. He graduated from Kent State University in 2000 with a degree in Journalism.

Brian has also had a very successful writing career as he has written four books and is New York Times Best Seller.

"While at STVM my experience working on the school newspaper, the Leprechaun Gold, was invaluable. It came at the start of the digital revolution and we were doing more advanced things putting that paper together than I was seeing at night when I worked at the Beacon Journal. My close association with the school, created by my mother Merrylou’s nearly five-decade career, also helped me get a jump on the entire world when I met a lanky 14-year-old freshman in 1999 named LeBron James."

Shannon Houser VM05

Cleveland 19 News, Reporter and Anchor Shannon is currently a reporter and fill-in anchor at Cleveland 19 News.

Following graduation from The University of Akron, Shannon spent time at TV stations in West Virginia and Indiana. In August, Shannon moved back to Northeast Ohio and is thrilled to tell stories important to her hometown.

Nominated for numerous regional Emmy Awards and as an Associated Press award-winning journalist, Shannon credits much of her success to her faith-centered education at St. Vincent-St. Mary High School.

While attending STVM, you could often see Shannon on stage, participating in many plays, musicals, and choir concerts. Shannon was also president of the International Thespian Society, on the student discipline appeal panel, and a member of the Russian Club, to name a few.

“With an education centered around faith, values, and morals, STVM helped me develop into a successful student and motivated professional.

Looking back on some of my fondest memories, it was my friends, teachers, and staff that molded and shaped my life in many positive ways.”

Alumni Kelly Bennett VM07

Andre Knott VM96

After graduating from St. Vincent-St. Mary High School in 2007, Kelly studied communications and marketing at Miami University in Oxford, OH. During college, she studied abroad in Luxembourg, joined Alpha Omicron Pi sorority, was involved in Campus Crusades for Christ, took photos for the college newspaper, and hosted a radio show.

Kelly graduated in 2011 and accepted a position to launch the first social media strategy at Miami University, which has since been recognized with national awards. Kelly has spoken at numerous conferences as a digital thought leader in higher education. In 2014, Kelly was promoted to Manager of Social Media and Marketing Strategy at Miami University. In her role, she has worked on branding projects, advertising campaigns, and even helped produce a T.V. commercial that appeared on ESPN. One of the best things about her job is that it's constantly changing with new technology.

Andre graduated from Kent State University in 2001. After graduation, he began working at 850 WKNR for three years.

Then he was hired at Newsradio WTAM 1100 where he is still employed and has done everything from hosting shows, being the Browns beat reporter, as well as the team’s Sideline reporter for six seasons. He also began working at SportsTime Ohio back in 2005 and has been employed with them since. He has hosted talk shows and has been the in-game reporter for Cleveland Indians games for the past five seasons. For the last six years, Andre has also hosted his own podcast, A-Z Podcast with Andre Knott and Zac Jackson. In 2018, Andre received a regional Emmy award for his reporting for the Indians live pre-game program.

Nick Shook VM10

David has undergraduate degrees in English and Mass Media/Communications, and an M.A. in English/ Creative Writing, all three from The University of Akron. He was an editor, reporter, and columnist at the Medina County Gazette from 1990-1994. He was a columnist, feature writer, and reporter at the Akron Beacon Journal from 1994-2008. He joined the creative writing faculty at The University of Akron in 2009, specializing in creative nonfiction. His rank is professor of English; he also teaches in the Northeast Ohio Master of Fine Arts (NEOMFA) program in creative writing.

Nick graduated from Kent State University in 2014, Cum Laude with a degree in Bachelor of Science in Multimedia News Journalism. During his college years, Nick had several internships in his field with the following businesses: the Youngstown Vindicator, the Akron Beacon Journal, 92.3 The Fan, and NFL Films. He has a very extensive employment history working as a Digital Content Producer and Around the NFL writer for NFL.com and the NFL Network. He was also a copy editor, reporter, and columnist at the Akron Beacon Journal and a digital producer at Cleveland 19 News. Currently, Nick is a Staff Writer and Digital Content Coordinator for the Cleveland Browns.

Author and Professor

David is the author of three books of creative nonfiction and coauthor of two others. As a freelancer, he has written for The New York Times Magazine, the Atlantic, Parade, The Wall Street Journal, Esquire, Grantland.com, Redbook, and many other publications.

His journalism awards include a general excellence award from the National Society of Newspaper Columnists, the Casey Medal for Meritorious Journalism, the Associated Press "Best News Writer in Ohio" award, as well as numerous state and regional awards. Literary honors include two books named "Editors' Choice" selections by the New York Times Book Review, the Ohioana Book Award, finalist for the PEN/Diamonstein-Spielvogel Award for the Art of the Essay, and the Cleveland Arts Prize for literature.

“I wanted to be a writer ever since I learned how to read, and St.Vincent-St. Mary is where I really came to understand the possibilities of that bewildering, mystical notion. My teachers challenged and encouraged me, from Sister Benita, who instilled in her students the rigors of grammar and precision, to Mrs. Witt, who (aptly named) taught us the art of humor, to Mrs. Harrigal, who inspired us with a passion for literature, to Sister Noel, my creative writing teacher, who allowed me to be weird. There were others, too. Mr. Cardone helped us understand literature in the world around us, offering Bruce Springsteen's lyrics as poetry. My Spanish teachers, Mrs. Valle and Mrs. Gorman, enriched my use of language. But most important is how the school modeled values of empathy and humility, perhaps the two most important elements for any journalist. I wouldn't fully understand that part till much later, but when I did, I knew where it came from.”

Cleveland Browns - Staff Writer and Digital Content Coordinator

“My experiences at STVM directly shaped my life for the next decade-plus. While I fully enjoyed the life, pace, work, and dedication required of the life of a studentathlete (football, baseball), it was in my freshman Honors English class with the since-retired Mrs. Harrigal that changed my future. I despised writing. I enjoyed reading, but not Shakespeare, or really anything assigned for that matter. It wasn't until Mrs. Harrigal handed out a carte blanche assignment -- a ballad about a topic, of our choosing -- that I found I might have a knack for it.

From there, I added to an earlier interest in sports broadcasting by deciding to work toward becoming a sports writer. I took journalism as an elective in my final two years, a class that was also taught by Mrs. Harrigal.

When LeBron James won his first Most Valuable Player Award, he held the ceremony at STVM, and ESPN enlisted me to cover the event. I was hooked and ended up becoming co-editor in chief of the student paper, The Leprechaun Gold, during my senior year. I knew this was it.

In the years since, in my travels to Cleveland, Philadelphia, Indianapolis, southern New Jersey, Los Angeles, Phoenix and everywhere in between, I've always found myself falling back on the foundation built for me at STVM. Getting a faith-based education in a disciplined, yet welcoming environment is invaluable, and truly affects students positively for the rest of their lives. You'll see it in their grades, their test scores and their admissions letters of acceptance, but where it'll shine brightest is in their character. And that is truly priceless.”

Alumni / Students Joe Burdon VM96 Podcast Co-Host

Joe graduated from John Carroll University in 2001 with a BA in Communications. From 2003-2016 he worked in Akron at InfoCision Management Corporation and currently Joe works in Downtown Cleveland at Asurint.

He is the co-host of The Guiltless Podcast, a Cleveland based comedy podcast with rotating topics and guests. They have interviewed several Cleveland based personalities such as Andre Knott, Cleveland sportscaster, and fellow alumnus; performed live shows at Cleveland Breweries and formed a network of several podcasts in The Guiltless Network, found at http://theguiltlessnetwork.com.

“My time at St. Vincent-St. Mary was very helpful to me for my college and professional career by preparing me on many fronts. Obviously, I was ready for my future from an intellectual standpoint.

My education at STVM was well rounded and challenging, which made me prepared for other challenges. The variety of people I met during my time there formed personal and professional relationships that have helped me throughout my entire life.”

Students in Media Broadcast Media

During a visit to Lake Catholic High School last August, Tom McKrill, Dean of Students at STVM, discovered a great opportunity to collaborate. The Director of Technology at Lake Catholic would bring his digital media class to STVM in the Spring to live stream their morning announcements from STVM. While here, he would also learn about the STEM certification process from faculty at STVM, as we are one of the only STEM certified Catholic high schools in Ohio.

Tom McKrill chose a group of STVM students to meet with the Lake Catholic students. They spent time learning scriptwriting, story identification, and graphics production. After this two hour lesson, the STVM students were able to broadcast their own news show.

This Fall a Broadcasting class will be added to the STVM curriculum. Students will be able to sign up for this elective.

This class will take students through the responsibility that is involved with a social media and digital presence in today’s society. We will learn how to develop content for broadcasting, blogging, vlogging, website development, social media, and more! We will explore what is meant by being a good digital ambassador throughout each unit of the course. We will be housing all of this information in a digital portfolio. Some of the items students will explore are the responsibility of digital media, video production, web development, vlogging and social media.

We are looking for STVM alumni or friends who can be a resource of knowledge or advice for this new class or who would be wlling to skype in during the class period to share their experiences. Film Analysis Is a semester course designed to allow students to develop their knowledge and understanding of the world of film, while also improving their ability to express themselves critically and analytically through writing. We cover a range of films from different time periods, and a range of methods used by directors to connect to audiences, such as camera techniques, sound, and color. Students watch films as a class, and also on their own, with regular journal writing about what they see, and seminar discussions about their responses. Each year, we take a field trip to the Film Slam, which is part of the International Film Festival in Cleveland. The class culminates in a final project which requires students to collaborate with peers to create a film of their own.

Babies!

Becky Petrilli

STVM Social Studies Teacher My identical twin girls, Mary Joan (MJ) and Grace, were born on June 4, 2018. They arrived about 7 weeks early, right at the end of the school year. Both spent about 3 weeks in the NICU to help them gain weight and learn to drink from a bottle.

Since then we have never looked back. Both girls have reached milestones and continue to grow and develop. They are full of personality and are constantly moving. A few weeks ago they learned to crawl and are of course moving in opposite directions! They love to play with and be around one another.

Though twins are difficult, it is a unique experience I would never give up. My husband, Mike, and I love watching and playing with them.

The STVM community has been so kind and caring since I announced last year we were expecting. Many faculty members, students, and parents have asked about the girls and some have even volunteered to babysit! It is tough being a parent, even more so when its two at once. I would never work full time without such a school supportive community.

Sadie Isabelle Boarman - Sadie was born on May 4th, 2018 to the proud parents of Emily and Anthony Boarman. She has been on the move since day one, and she started walking before her big 1st birthday. She hopes to be on the famous STVM Cross Country and Track team and run for Coach Lancianese like her mom did in high school. She loves attending STVM baseball games, and clapping for the Irish!

Amy Bisesi Barcelo VM06 STVM Director of Admissions

Kevin and Amy (Bisesi) Barcelo became proud parents to son Kaden Gabriel Barcelo on December 20, 2018 at 8:20 a.m.

Kaden surprised his parents by arriving 6.5 weeks early (he was due on February 3, 2019)! Despite his prematurity, Kaden weighed in at a considerably healthy 4 lbs 10 oz and measured 17 inches long. Due to some digestive issues, Kaden spent 4 weeks at Akron Children’s Hospital NICU. He is now doing well and enjoys smiling, eating, reading, bath time, and watching his dogs play. Kevin and Amy are extremely grateful for the prayers, support, and encouragement of the STVM community!

Lillian Rose Wilsterman, STVM Class of 2036, was born on Friday July 13, 2018 weighing 7 pounds 5 ounces, 19.5 inches long. She is the daughter of Dale Wilsterman and Nicole (Carone) Wilsterman VM02, niece of Heather Carone VM06, and granddaughter of STVM President, Tom VM77 and Darla Carone.

Lillian prefers to feed herself, has 8 teeth, loves dancing with her Papa and giving her Mimi kisses. She is always on the go pulling herself up and walking around furniture as well as making a beeline for any stairs. Lilly has quite the arm already and is in training for the STVM Bowling Team!

Dale and Nicole appreciate all the love and support they received from the STVM family upon Lilly’s arrival. They feel so blessed to be able to raise their daughter as part of such a deep rooted, faith-filled community and ongoing legacy.

Bishop Perez On Tuesday, February 5, our St. Vincent-St. Mary community had the opportunity to celebrate Mass with Bishop Nelson Perez presiding.

During his homily, Bishop Perez queried our students about why they love STVM. As students referenced traditions and family, Bishop Perez mentioned LeBron James’ quote “Never forget where you came from.”

He spoke to our students of all the gifts they have received and the sacrifices people make on their behalf. Bishop Perez reminded them that they may not understand how much others have sacrificed for them until much later in their lives but they should be thankful for those sacrifices. They helped them get to where they are today.

After Mass, Bishop Perez shared lunch with our students in the Jack and Ann Haag Student Center. Students had the opportunity to chat with him and ask him any questions they wanted.
