Your Grade Point Average (GPA)

These are the standard level courses and are suitable for most students. You can expect to get 20–30 minutes homework each night per elective.

Each of your courses will be given a grade point average (GPA) and this is the calculated average of the grades you receive from your courses. The U.S. GPA is on a 4-point-scale, with 4.0 being the equivalent of an ‘A’.

Honors courses Honors courses offer highly motivated students an opportunity to study a specific course in greater depth and at a faster pace. These are aimed at higher ability students and you can expect to get 30–40 minutes homework each night per elective.

Advanced Placement (AP) Advanced Placement courses are college level courses that prepare students to take College Board exams to establish advanced placement in college courses or credit toward a college degree. On these courses you can expect to get 60 minutes of homework each night per elective. They have always been really helpful telling us what classes we should take based on what we think our major will be, what electives and how our grades should look.”

We also aim to guide you and your parents through the unpredictable and complicated U.S. admissions process. We work with you to make sure you find the right degree program at the right university or college — and then devise a strategy for gaining admission. We arrange college visits throughout the year, numerous workshops, and one-to-one counseling sessions.

“CATS helped me with choosing my subjects and the college counselling at CATS is the best place ever. You can talk about a lot of things with the counsellor. They’re very friendly and they’re very helpful. Overall it’s just the best experience.” An Truong Nguyen — Vietnamese; 12th Grade

Unlike many other countries where admission is based primarily on standardized test scores, U.S. universities and colleges take into account everything about a student, not just academics. Colleges want to build talented and diverse student communities filled with well-rounded students. Our program reflects this and focuses as much on developing well-rounded individuals as it does on grades and exams.
