YOUR PATHWAYS. At Northern College, we’ve got a lot to brag about. Small class sizes, great learning facilities and fantastic faculty, warm, welcoming campus communities and that doesn’t even include the wonderful backdrop of Northern Ontario. Our programs are employment focused; you have access to direct learning opportunities. Sure, we’ll teach you the concepts behind the work you’ll be doing in your chosen field, but we’d much rather give you the tools, the project and let you put those concepts to the test as soon as we can. For us, this mantra is at the heart of everything that makes a College education a fantastic option. But what if you could take the College foundation, and turn it into a University Degree? We call it an academic pathway, but you’ll call it a fantastic opportunity! Northern College has a number of these academic pathways with dozens of Universities in Canada and overseas, specifically tailored to give you a world of options on your educational journey. Here’s one way it could work: Let’s say you enroll in our two-year Mining Engineering Technician program and complete your two years at Northern. Once you’ve received your diploma, worn your cap and gown, you can head straight out into the working world no problem, you’ve got the training you need to succeed in the modern world of mining and mine engineering.

11

However, let’s say you’re not ready to do the 9-5, or you’d feel a lot better with a degree backing you. You can seamlessly transition to Queen’s University’s Bachelor of Engineering Technology and end up with a degree in two years. It’s the perfect balance, you get two years of practical, hands on training and another two years of the kind of University level education that will help give you that leg up as you enter the working world. Sound like an awesome opportunity? We feel the same way, which is why Engineering Technology isn’t the only University ‘pathway’ we’ve got on offer, check out all of the ways you can upgrade your education, without losing credit for the work you’ve put in. AFTER GRAD WHY NOT CHOOSE TO LIVE HERE.

We’re proud Northerners.

Frankly, we can’t think of anywhere else in the world more perfect to set some roots down, build a life and share experiences. Whether you’re working for the weekend, or looking to gain experience and find opportunity, what better place to call home than northern Ontario? If the lush, boundless beauty of the boreal forests aren’t enough to stir some passion in your blood, the endless line of wonderful, friendly faces waiting to welcome you to your new home should. We know why we love the north, but here are a few reasons we think you’ll come to love the north too.

45

THE NORTH: LAND OF OPPORTUNITY.

Northern Ontario is changing and growing, so it’s the perfect time for you to join us. Long time workers are retiring and the labour market is expanding. All of this is good news for you. You’re at the start of your academic journey, perfectly positioned to receive the education you’ll need to take on your roll in filling the North’s employment gap. The Far Northeast Training Board conducted an expansive study of the labour market in northeastern Ontario in 2015, projecting an annual employment gap of over 5,000 workers annually, with the majority of those job openings requiring a college level education.

LIVE THE LIFE OF YOUR DREAMS HERE. Northern College not only offers you the highest quality of education, but it also helps to establish your foot hold in the north, creating tangible pathways to meaningful employment within a region with a low cost of living and high quality of life. But what does that mean? Let us show you...

Now, while you try and sort out how best to park your three Lamborghinis, you might be interested to know that housing isn’t the only affordable aspect to live in northern Ontario. You can also drive easily and safely through town with enough time to get to your friend’s home for dinner. And find parking close to where you need to be for a fraction or none of the cost paid elsewhere. There are more perks to life in the north than just the beauty and vastness of the Northern Experience. 48

PLAY.

LIVE MUSIC Each of our campus communities hosts live music throughout the year, with larger scale festivals happening over the summer months. Whether it’s Rock on the River in Timmins in July or Kirkland Lake’s Homecoming festival over the last week of June, these music festivals feature a little something for everyone. If you’re interested in taking in some local talent, Timmins hosts a free summer concert series which features a variety of local bands and musicians in beautiful McIntyre Park.

COMMUNITY FESTIVALS Whatever your interests, northeastern Ontario has an event for you. The Great Canadian Kayak Challenge is a weekend long celebration of all things kayaking and canoeing in Timmins at the end of August. Featuring live music, local vendors and dozens of kayak races, the event has quickly grown to become one of the largest of its kind in the country. If horsepower and tire smoke are more your speed, check out Notre Dame du Nord’s annual Truck Rodeo just a few minutes over the Quebec border near our Haileybury Campus, or travel a little further afield to take in Smooth Rock Falls’ annual Truck Fest for a symphony of speed, sound and 18 wheeled fury. If a more relaxed celebration of the season sharpens your skates, be sure to check out Kirkland Lake’s annual Winter Carnival, a weeklong event featuring all of the staples of winter. Ice fishing derbies, snow mobile drag racing, skating, hockey, the list goes on.

GET OUTSIDE.

Ah, the great outdoors. As Canadians, we pride ourselves in the vast beauty that is the Canadian experience, with endless kilometres of fresh-water lakes, rivers, forests and mountains. We love the idea of a life lived in postcard perfect nature. Well, consider this your ‘greetings from northeastern Ontario’ moment because there are literally hundreds of reasons to get outside and get moving at Northern College. Besides being steps away from endless raw wilderness and beauty, our catchment region is home to 12 provincial parks, countless private campgrounds, abundant free crown land camping opportunities and millions of reasons to explore them all. Lakes and rivers are a common sight throughout and between our towns and catchment region, providing plenty of opportunities for canoeing, kayaking and of course fishing. So grab a friend and whatever floatation device you’ve got handy and hit the pristine water! Regardless of the season, northeastern Ontario has something exhilarating for you to experience, including skiing, hiking, four-wheeling, skidooing (even in town). The list goes on – but it’s a lot easier for us to show you. .
