The most dominant religion in Morocco is Islam. It is the faith of all Moroccans except a decreasing Jewish community and a small European colony. It also has the highest number of followers in most parts of the country. Practices from earlier religions still exist, even if they have taken a Muslim cloak. In fact, this is an age-old Islamic practice in Morocco, indicating the notion of a holy man, popularly called a “Marabout”.

The constitution of Morocco guarantees freedom of religion, describes the nation as Muslim and the king as the “Amir El Mouminin”, or commander of the faithful. The government especially the ministry of religions foundations (Habus) and Islamic affairs acts to strengthen and support Islam.
