Creating a home for faith & learning at the University of Virginia

Annual Fund | 2022-2023
Spreading the gospel to the UVA community and beyond since 1976

The Study Center has been a home for the gospel at the University of Virginia for over 45 years. And like any good home, everyone is welcome inside. Our ministry stretches across the UVA community, engaging the head and the heart together and bringing the good news of Jesus Christ to our corner of the world here in Charlottesville.

But you don’t have to take my word for it. We’re delighted to introduce you to the faces of the Study Center here on Grounds and beyond. Thank you for your prayers and support for our ministry!

UNDERGRADUATE MINISTRIES

The Study Center’s ministry has been a meaningful community and home to me during my time as an undergraduate student. It’s such a warm and inviting place and I often see Christ-like love through hospitality and small group conversations. I feel cared for by the staff and guided by their wisdom.

LIFE IN COMMUNITY

The Residential Program emphasizes three components: character, consistency, and community. Students live together (at the Study Center and in the Yellow House next door), meet weekly for dinners, participate in a Bible study, and are paired with an older Christian mentor throughout their time in the program.

Interns keep the Study Center running — literally! They keep the coffee fresh, take out the trash, prepare meals for hospitality events, and so much more. Interns also meet for a weekly dinner and Bible study.

ENGAGING THE HEART

Small groups are weekly gatherings where students can bring their questions about the faith, dive deeper into scripture and literature, and build community with fellow believers. Homemade snacks are prepared by our interns and enjoyed by all!

Lectures are hosted several times a semester in our building and on Grounds. We bring in Christian authors, philosophers, counselors, academics, city leaders, and more to engage our students’ hearts and minds. All of our lectures are available for download through our new podcast Conversations from Chancellor Street.

NEW BUT NOT ALONE

Foundations Week is a four-day retreat designed for incoming first-year students to build Christian community on Grounds before classes even begin. They prepare meals together, participate in Bible studies, and do a scavenger hunt around Charlottesville!

Move-In Day Lunch is another Study Center favorite for first-year students and their families. Parents and students have the opportunity to meet each other and connect with a variety of Grounds ministries.

GRADUATE MINISTRIES

My first experience with the Study Center was as an undergraduate student at Morehouse College. I was working at UVA for the summer and was having difficulty connecting with peers who were distant after learning I was a Christian.

One day, I was walking around town and noticed a building marked “The Center for Christian Study” on Chancellor Street. Intrigued, I walked inside and stumbled upon a summer Chi Alpha meeting. After spending more time at the Study Center, I realized that this is a place where devotion meets intellectuality and where inquiry is constantly encouraged.

Returning to UVA as a doctoral student, I have been blessed by the community here and encouraged by the growing presence of graduate students. This is a place for learning and meaningful connection.

PURSUING CHRIST IN ALL OF LIFE

Through Graduate Christian Fellowship, Law Christian Fellowship, and Darden Christian Fellowship, students are encouraged to incorporate their faith into all aspects of life, including their professional careers.

Each of our graduate ministries participate in weekly Bible studies, regular social activites, retreats, and more.

GROUNDS MINISTRIES

PARTNERS IN MINISTRY

We are thankful for the capacity to offer office and meeting space in our building to several Grounds ministries. More space will be available once our new building is complete, allowing more Grounds ministers to work and minister directly from the Study Center.

Monthly Grounds Ministry

Meetings offer an opportunity for ministers across denominations to gather at the Study Center for prayer and encouragment.

The Study Center is a hub of relational connection! Because of the Study Center, I am connected to students, parents, and other ministries and their staff. This work of connection is invaluable for ministry and for the practice of Gospel unity at UVA, that we might live out Jesus’ call to ‘become perfectly one, so that the world may know....’ (John 17:23).

FACULTY MINISTRIES

BEYOND THE CLASSROOM

L’Abri Tea with faculty, the University Faculty Lecture Series, and the Faculty Christian Forum create avenues for partnership and conversation between the Study Center, students, and UVA faculty.

The Christian Study Center has been a tremendous blessing. After working at another college for nearly twenty years which had nothing like this, it has been such a joy to be in a place where there is a vibrant ministry that puts me into relationship with Christian faculty and students. From brunches, book events, and research presentations with other faculty to dinners and prayer time before final exams with students, the Study Center provides a space that cultivates Christian community and nurtures friendship and the intellectual life.

PARENT & COMMUNITY MINISTRIES

Coming from out-of-state, the Study Center was a rock to my son and our family during his time at UVA. It gave him a sense of place with a community of like-minded people. I have such fond memories of FaceTiming with my son as he stopped by the Study Center for a cup of coffee on his walk to class each day and seeing that it was like a second home to him.

As a member of the Parents Council, I hope to help other families find a place of rest and spiritual growth at the Center for Christian Study, no matter where they are coming from.

During my second year at UVA, the Study Center became my home away from home. It provided a welcoming and Christ-centered space to study and enjoy fellowship.

When I joined the residential program, I was welcomed by a community of residents and staff who truly love me and help me to grow as a man of God.
