This sports performance center on the campus of Great Park in Irvine, CA puts a focus on not only athlete competition, but overall athlete health and performance. Configured specifically on a north-south axis to optimize play time during the afternoon hours, this track and field stadium is sunken one level below ground and opens up to the surrounding Great Park area at concourse level to engage with the community.

Equipped with track and field-specific equipment and field markings, it is an exciting and lively place to be both on game day and off. This stadium doubles as a training facility for local residents and nationally ranked athletes. The underground performance center features home and away locker rooms, athlete lounges, physical therapy rooms, and multipurpose fitness rooms.

WALL SECTION

Precast concrete is utilized to form the bleacher-style seating in the stadium, including the individual terrace units and step blocks. Precast raker beams uphold the bleachers and reach deep into the ground for structural support.

Poured concrete with steel reinforcement forms the concourse floor and divides the public program from the private, with insulation being introduced at basement level to create more temperate indoor conditions for the performance level. A similar concrete floor blankets the ground within, while a concrete retaining wall resists the force of the earth to create the subterranean space.

The stadium roof is a tensile structure comprised of ETFE ribbons that wrap around the tension ring structure to form a tartan-like pattern. Rooted in thick concrete footings, which also manage crowdflow, this roofing system allows various levels of shade and sun to be cast on the playing field.

Following this pattern, audience seating on the western, eastern, and southern sides are protected from the elements at various degrees while the center of the stadium receives the most sunlight.

Levels of transluscency are strategically determined by the tartan pattern of the ETFE: lighter coverage on the northernmost side of the stadium, more coverage toward the middle and heavier on the southern side where the sun beats down in the afternoon.

The Simone Biles Orthopedic Surgery Center aims to take a welcoming, non-intimidating approach to orthopedic surgery and wellness. Located in Beaverton, Oregon on the grounds of a fictional sports corporation headquarters, this surgical center is open to both employees of the company in addition to the athletes whom it supports.

This surgery center puts emphasis on balance as a guiding concept, not only in its physical shape, resembling gymnastic balance beams, but in the services it offers, ranging from mental health recovery to physical therapy, pharmaceutical services to elective orthopedic surgerical procedures.

/HYHO

The building’s shape is loosely inspired by gymnastics, the sport of Olympic athlete Simone Biles after whom this project is named. Gymnastics is a sport requiring balance, strength, and flexibility, three qualities that are embodied in the project.

The massing strategy of the building is as follows:

BALANCE BEAM

The initial form of the building mimics the long rectangular shape of a gymnastic balance beam.

BACK HANDSPRING

Drawing inspiration from the bending motions of a gymnast, the two adjacent rectangular forms bend and curve around a pressure point applied to the center of each beam, both forms being manipulated in tandem with one another to maintain a balanced shape.

SPLIT LEAP

Like the leap of a gymnast whose two feet leave the ground and whose body is suspended in the aid, the outer two masses increase in height, leaving a void in the center for air to flow through.

ENDING POSE

The final form is established, debuting two curved beams balancing upon a central mass and resulting in elongated negative space, with potential for a roof garden or walkable green space.

This proposal for a mixed-use multifamily development stakes its claim on the corner of Effie and Occidental in Silverlake, Los Angeles, California. With ground floor retail, a mix of twelve dwelling units, and underground on-site parking, this Silverlake Mixed-Use development brings new life to the neighborhood by providing housing as well as an exciting new social center for shopping and dining.

At the top of Vetter Mountain in the San Gabriel Mountains of Los Angeles sits a small research center for geologists and astrologists. Fitted with an outdoor meeting deck for events and symposiums, a small office, and private dwellings for resident researchers, the Vetter Mountain Research Center is both a scenic corner office and an attractive hike destination.

At an elevation of 5,911 feet, this facility’s primary purpose is to serve as a place of research, where knowledge can be obtained, documented, studied, and shared.
