VOLTA NY VOLTA NY

is an invitational show of emerging solo artists’ projects and the American incarnation of the successful young fair founded in Basel in 2005. VOLTA NY was conceived in 2008 by Artistic Director Amanda Coulson as a tightly-focused, boutique event that is a place for discovery, a showcase for relevant art contemporary positions regardless of the artist’s or gallery’s age.

By refocusing the fair-going experience to solo-artist projects, VOLTA’s New York edition promotes a deep exploration of the work of its invited participants and offers the opportunity for new discoveries. VOLTA showcases galleries — whether young or mature — that choose to work with the most exciting emerging artists. These galleries must maintain deeply meaningful connections with their artists and follow them throughout their careers. In turn, select galleries exhibit in the airy loft surroundings of VOLTA NY’s SoHo venue, elevating their respective platforms for an experience mutually beneficial to fair visitors and the galleries alike.

Satoru Tamura Born 1972 in Tochigi, Japan Satoru Tamura is a multimedia artist who creates sculptures, kinetic art, video art, and installations.

His artwork is based on the theme ‘destruction of meaning’. He seeks to create a pure, white concept with no background. He tries to stay liberated from the meaning, origin and purpose of the chosen material and form. When these are ignored or lost, the object will only be “the object”. This is often meant to evoke laughter, as the viewer realizes that ‘it is what it is’. www.tamurasatoru.com

Gerard Ellis Born 1976 in Dominican Republic A painter and draftsman by calling and choice, Gerard Ellis establishes an interesting dichotomy between the practice of painting and social critique. His pictorial work is highly expressive and vigorous for those who directly or indirectly participate in the multiple strata of the contexts of which this artist speaks. The violence, corruption and lack of willpower characteristic of our times are central topics of his meticulous work. hat is left behind when we leave? Who will

remember us when we’re gone? How will those we leave behind remember us? How will they deal with Bench / 2013 / 60”x14”x18.5” / Sapele

our passing? Will it be easy for them or have a lasting impact that takes years to overcome? And how will they work through this.

These are universal questions that one ponders when confronted with our own mortality. Cliché at times–yet the loss of another human we care about deeply has an incomprehensible effect upon each and every one of us. It took Jae Hyung Lee over 8 years to come to terms with the loss of his father. The process was riddled with the usual emotions: sadness, anger, guilt and grief– escalating to the point of trauma.

Instead of wallowing, Mr. Lee turned to creation and design as a means of finding his way through these feelings and in turn was able to immortalize the small routine aspects of his father’s life in a stool, bench, coat rack, and sculpture. These four objects represent the individual gestures and habits of a single individual that no longer graces this planet.

Though I never had the opportunity to meet Mr. Lee’s father, one begins to understand the habits and posture of this individual through the design, functionality and aesthetics of these objects. Be it the worn coat that he donned and hung up on his arrival home from work every day, or the manner in which he sat down to put on his shoes in the morning before departing for the day. When studying this body of work one subtly becomes closer to the individual that once was.

Out of 6 locations throughout the city, the one in Chelsea is by far the coziest.

It is a perfect spot to meet up with friends or to read books. With their outdoor patio in the back and benches by the front door you can also enjoy your coffee outside on a warm day. Note that they have a no-laptop policy here, in order to make sure you focus on your coffee and real-time socializing. Their flat white and latte are superb. They also have a great selection of pour-overs from all over the world. For those of you who had too much caffeine already, they also have interesting tea selections and baked goods from their own bakery. You just can’t go wrong.

Eataly

Coffee section is only a small part of this vast everything-Italian super mart, and at some point of almost every day it turns into a madhouse with bustling crowds.

It’s not a relaxing atmosphere like the other spots introduced in this article, but the coffee is worth it. They have two espresso bars- First being the Lavazza bar with variety of mixed Italian espresso drinks. The Torinese (espresso+ hot chocolate+ steamed milk) is perfectly strong and chocolate-y to refresh your afternoon, and it is indeed a regional specialty of Turin, Italy. The other bar is solely dedicated to espresso & macchiato with its own beautifully crafted machine and you can pick among different selection of coffee beans. While you’re at it, you can also enjoy the gelato and mouth-watering Italian desserts.

Blue Bottle Coffee

Another infamous coffee company, Blue Bottle also serves all the espresso drinks as we know them, and variety of pour-overs. New Orleans style iced coffee is very popular and apparently addictive. They also have a few locations throughout the city, but particularly only in Williamsburg they have the SG-120, which is essentially a small latte, made with a single origin Bosco machine. Espresso is made with single origin coffee beans and a small amount of milk is carefully added, then presented in a delicate 4oz glass. The balance of coffee and milk is just perfect.

Cafeteria la Mejor

Let’s heat things up a little bit. A true Miami-style Cuban café, located in Bushwick, Brooklyn, welcomes you with bright bouncy Caribbean colors. You must try their signature Café con Leche, which is a sweet latte added with butter and a pinch of salt. It’s different in a very good way. Another noteworthy coffee here is espresso soda, sugar added espresso dropped in a tall glass of seltzer- made for your perfect summer boost. They also serve a few sandwiches and toasts made with Cuban bread that fill you up with satisfaction. The Meridian, ham and cheese sandwich with spicy guava jelly is great with sweet, tangy and spicy flavors jamming together. Free wi-fi for you laptop users.

Kave

In another side of Bushwick, Kávé has the most beautiful interior with gorgeous chairs. It is sitting deep inside of a building so you won’t see it from the outsidebut there lies a pleasant surprise. With outdoor patio and free wi-fi, it is a good setting for getting your work done and hanging out. They give you many options with their coffee here- in addition to the usual milk and soy milk, they have home made nut milks to add to your lactose-intolerant coffee. And yes they actually taste great. Love the idea of coffee but can’t stomach the caffeine? Kave gives you an alternative with chicory-root blend ‘100% coffee-free coffee’! Gotta love their creativity, and attention to detail.
