The expressive power of the art of ideographic writing is something that the Western world does not understand well. We are too tight in our alphabet.

Although it’s precious and sharp it has now forgotten the artistic nuances that imposes the ideogram. With Ping He we are ahead of a rebirth and reworking of the same concept of ideogram that becomes a chromatic interpreter of itself. An art that fascinates us, because it is veiled by an intriguing mystery, capable to enclose the meanders of human thought and soul sensations in powerful signs in their color, in their thickness and conformation.

With Ping He opens a new world, a window on the far east, where humanity has started an alternative path to western civilisation, equally valid and worthy of study and deepening to better understand the multiple capabilities of human thought.

La potenza espressiva dell’arte della scrittura ideografica è qualcosa che il mondo occidentale non comprende bene. Siamo troppo stretti nel nostro alfabeto. Benché prezioso e preciso ha ormai dimenticato le sfumature artistiche che impone l’ideogramma. Con Ping He ci troviamo davanti ad una rinascita e rielaborazione del concetto stesso di ideogramma che diventa interprete cromatico di se stesso. Un’arte che ci affascina, perché velata da intrigante mistero, capace di racchiudere i meandri del pensiero umano e delle sensazioni dell’anima in segni poderosi nel loro colore, nel loro spessore e conformazione. Con Ping He si apre un mondo nuovo, una finestra sul lontano oriente, il luogo dove l’umanità ha intrapreso una via alternativa alla civiltà occidentale, altrettanto valida e degna di studio e approfondimento per meglio comprendere le molteplici capacità del pensiero umano.

HE PING Three Perfect Things

Calligraphy, the art of beautiful writing, is a fundamental element of Chinese culture and tradition. From an early period, Calligraphy was revered as a Fine Art above all others in ancient China and valued together with poetry, as a supreme form of self-expression and cultivation. Starting from the Song dynasty, in the late 10th century, and up till the early 20th century, the practice of calligraphy became intertwined with poetry and ink painting. The combination of this trinity of expression became known as ‘san jue’ or the ‘Three Perfect Things’.

Born in Shanghai - China, He Ping was nourished by Chinese Culture and grew up under its influence. His paintings reveal an impulse towards writing and an embedded reference towards Chinese calligraphy. Yet, He Ping deliberately breaks the rules and frameworks of this strictly disciplined mode of expression and instead reconsiders aspects and elements of traditional calligraphy to communicate thoughts on contemporary society.

Emblematic of authority and power, ancient calligraphy has been described as a ‘culture devoted to the power of the word.’ Under He Ping’s treatment, it is appropriated and extrapolated of its power of communicating words, becoming illegible and meaningless from a traditionalist perspective. As the connotations and knowledge customary associated with the calligraphic symbols are lost and the purpose transformed, He Ping’s marks become subversive and radical. His new symbols shift the balance between the recognizable and unidentified, the familiar and unfamiliar.

He Ping’s works present a Derridean deconstruction, not only of perceived notions but also of aesthetic structures and forms. The rigid formal systems of calligraphy are done away with through a performative method of painting that focuses on the spontaneous, instinctive and automatic. From the abstract skeletons with light lines to the sumptuous layers of glazes and pulpy forms or the laboured compositions of thick ink and heavy colours, He Ping’s paintings find affinity with action painting and gestural abstraction with references to western Modernist idioms. His combinations of intersecting lines and thick curves propose a new balance characterised by flow and dynamic movement that captures the essence, the spirit, the soul.

Similar to ancient calligraphy, Ping’s new forms reveal a concentration of the vitality of nature and the essential energy of the human body. In fact, Ping confesses that when painting, he feels “as though life and the cosmos move in synchrony” . His compositions transcend form and become Icons. Each gestural line transformed into a sign that simplifies the complex layering of life experiences and memory in an urbanized world.

He Ping with his combination of painting, post-structuralist calligraphy and poetic tinge, re-contextualizes the Three Perfect Things in a contemporary environment and fuses a global contemporary practice with ancient traditions. He is representative of a contemporary movement of Chinese artists who in response to the overwhelming complexities of contemporary society, revert to traditional forms but with a capacity to interiorize, simplify and make personal and with a drive to subvert our expectations and perceptions.

HE PING “Le tre cose perfette”

La calligrafia, l'arte della bella scrittura, è un elemento fondamentale della cultura e della tradizione cinese. Da tempi lontani, la calligrafia era apprezzata come arte superiore a tutte le altre belle arti nell'antica Cina e apprezzata insieme alla poesia, come forma suprema di auto-espressione e cultura. A partire dalla dinastia Song, nel tardo X secolo e fino all'inizio del XX secolo, la pratica della calligrafia si è intrecciata con la poesia e la pittura a inchiostro. La combinazione di questa trinità di espressione divenne nota come “san jue” o “Le tre cose perfette”.

Nato a Shanghai, in Cina, He Ping è stato nutrito dalla cultura cinese e cresciuto sotto la sua influenza. I suoi dipinti rivelano un impulso verso la scrittura e un riferimento alla calligrafia cinese. Tuttavia, He Ping ha deliberatamente infranto le regole e le strutture di questa modalità di espressione rigorosamente disciplinata e invece riconsidera aspetti e elementi della calligrafia tradizionale per comunicare pensieri sulla società contemporanea.

Emblematica di autorità e potere, l'antica calligrafia è stata descritta come una “cultura votata al potere della parola”. Con il trattamento di He Ping, è privata dal suo potere di comunicare parole, diventando illeggibile e priva di significato vista da una prospettiva tradizionalista. Man mano che le connotazioni e le conoscenze abituali associate ai simboli calligrafici vengono perse e il fine della calligrafia è cambiato, i segni di He Ping diventano sovversivi e radicali. I suoi nuovi simboli spostano l'equilibrio tra il riconoscibile e il non identificato, il familiare e il non familiare.

Le opere di He Ping presentano una decostruzione derridiana, non solo delle nozioni percepite, ma anche delle strutture e delle forme estetiche. I rigidi sistemi formali di calligrafia vengono eliminati attraverso un metodo performante di pittura che si concentra sullo spontaneo, istintivo e automatico. Dagli scheletri astratti con linee leggere ai sontuosi strati di velature e forme polpose o alle laboriose composizioni di inchiostro denso e colori pesanti, i dipinti di He Ping trovano affinità con la pittura d'azione e l'astrazione gestuale con riferimenti agli idiomi modernisti occidentali. Le sue combinazioni di linee intersecanti e curve spesse propongono un nuovo equilibrio caratterizzato da flusso e movimento dinamico che cattura l'essenza, lo spirito, l'anima.

Simile alla calligrafia antica, le nuove forme di Ping rivelano una concentrazione della vitalità della natura e dell'energia essenziale del corpo umano. Infatti, Ping confessa che quando dipinge, si sente “come se la vita e il cosmo si muovessero in sincronia”. Le sue composizioni trascendono la forma e diventano icone. Ogni linea gestuale si trasforma in un segno che semplifica la complessa stratificazione delle esperienze di vita e della memoria in un mondo urbanizzato.

He Ping con la sua combinazione di pittura, calligrafia post-strutturalista e sfumatura poetica, ricontestualizza “Le Tre cose perfette” in un ambiente contemporaneo e fonde una pratica contemporanea globale con tradizioni antiche. È rappresentante di un movimento contemporaneo di artisti cinesi che, in risposta alle travolgenti complessità della società contemporanea, ritorna a forme tradizionali ma con una capacità di interiorizzare, semplificare e rendere personale e con una spinta a sovvertire le nostre aspettative e percezioni.
