Josh Bailey

This portfolio showcases a curated selection of my architectural studies and professional experiences

My name is Josh Bailey, and I am an Architecture student at Griffith University. With over 14 years of experience in the construction industry, beginning in civil construction and progressing to commercial building and shopfitting, I discovered my passion for architecture. I believe that thoughtful architecture has a profound impact on our lives, both directly and indirectly.

As I advance through my education, my style and taste continue to evolve, and I am committed to pushing my career forward while embracing continuous learning. I am always seeking opportunities to grow, both professionally and personally, by exploring new ideas, innovative building materials, and learning from others.

Beyond architecture, I have a deep passion for working with native hardwoods, off-form concrete, and other raw materials. In my free time, I enjoy running, reading, and swimming, which help me stay balanced and inspired.

education

Griffith university 2022 - Currently - Batchelor of architectural design (gpa 6.2)

Studying architecture has transformed my initial interest into what will be a lifelong passion. From the beginning of the course, I immersed myself in studio work and mastering software to enhance my time management. My early designs were heavily influenced by my background in engineering and construction, resulting in practical, buildable solutions. However, as I progressed into my second year, I began to explore more conceptual ideas, allowing my creativity to flourish.

As I approach the end of my degree, my ability to showcase architecture has significantly evolved. I now strive to push the boundaries with imaginative design solutions while maintaining a strong understanding of the fundamental principles of construction.

Experience

Civil contractor - Jade Plumbing & civil - cert 4 plumbing - cert 3 civil 2008 -2016

I have developed a strong understanding of structural and hydraulic services through my extensive contracting experience. Over the years, I have constructed large bio-retention basins, both concrete and natural, as well as roads, stormwater culverts, large inground water tanks, sewer and water mains, and handled bulk earthworks and site preparation. My work in formwork, structural concrete, and slabs, along with engineered footings and foundations, has given me a deep insight into soil conditions and the importance of Geotechnical egineering.

Additionally, I have collaborated closely with local councils, government planners, on-site surveyors, and environmental consultants. My experience in bringing large commercial projects out of the ground has reinforced the importance of solid engineering fundamentals and the critical role that foundations play in the longevity of any building or structure.

building/shop fitting - studio Build - cert 4 constuction - 2016 currently

Successfully completed over 60 commercial shop fit-outs, working closely with architects, clients, certifiers, and town planners. This experience has given me a strong understanding of building codes and regulations necessary for project completion. Collaborating with various trades on-site has honed my problem-solving skills and project management principles, ensuring that teams work efficiently to deliver projects on time and within budget.

My role as a builder has deepened my interest in architecture, influencing my decision to transition fully into an architectural career. I am committed to continuing my growth as a designer and further developing my expertise in the field.

southport community center

Studio 2 - 2022

The Southport Community Center project centers on converting an existing residential dwelling into a dynamic public space through a proposed addition. The site presents challenges related to circulation and space, which were addressed by elevating the addition, creating a more open ground plane for visitors. Atriums were incorporated to seamlessly blend the outdoor landscape with the interior, enhancing the connection between nature and the built environment

Murwillumbah commons

Studio 4 - 2023

Murwillumbah Commons stands as an innovative precinct aimed at dismantling the stigma often linked to mental health facilities. It achieves this by removing physical obstacles such as thresholds and doors, prioritizing natural light and ventilation, and fostering an environment where the community can interact comfortably with the architecture. Inspired by the town's existing architectural character and enhanced by an eclectic artistic touch prevalent in the local culture, the design aspires to establish an all-encompassing and inviting space that champions mental well-being, free from preconceptions and bias.

currumbin womens transition facility

Studio 5 - 2024

The Currumbin Creek Women's Transitional Facility proposal prioritizes the well being of its residents while maintaining a sustainable footprint, particularly given its proximity to Currumbin Creek. The proposal aims to provide efficient circulation to open grasslands that aid in rainwater treatment and retention, reducing the site's impact on localized flooding. Strategically designed social areas are implemented throughout the facility to promote various forms of interactions. The project emphasizes on creating key connections and influence found throughout the local and broader area.
