An intention to integrate homeless individuals back into the community

Our initiative idea is to bring the existing community more life and economic growth to the site by designing a local farmers market. From viewing the existing community, we noticed that the upbringing of urban expansion relocates the homeless through a social force. With the concern of bringing more movement to the area and how it can impact the homeless, we would like to include them in this new development. A portion of the site will be signi cant to aiding those with no residency or unemployment. They will be housed on the secondary level of the farmers market to give the inhabitants a private space. Housing will be organized into comfortable living spaces, a small living room, a kitchen, and a bathroom. The application would be through a questionnaire and proof of the individual’s situation. To achieve the mental and physical growth of habitants we provide services such as nancial advisory, nutrition, physical therapy, and counseling. After making a certain amount of income from the market and services we help the individuals transition to better opportunities.

Designing a farmers market brings the existing, and new communities into the site. The farmers market will provide the habitants with skills and employment to succeed in a thriving community. Gardening programs would consist of, harvesting bread, owers, honey, and a variation of produce. Then they can sell what they produce and present the goods to the consumers by sampling and marketing. To promote sustainability, green roofs and vegitation are integrated.

The market will be placed throughout the site to provide an interactive scape where guests can roam and create new connections. Our spatial organization encourages a welcoming environment with inclusivity and equality. With the development of a farmers market, we will partner with neighboring organizations to give habitants opportunities and resources.

Giving these communities accessibility, local goods, and prices encourages regular cutomers. When the market is not active, the habitants of the market can promote workshops on gardening, beekeeping, sustainability, market tours, and hold music events to interconnect the habitants more with the midtown community. We can provide a donation area in our community center for generous visitors to give. Other ways we can connect habitants with the existing community, is by partnering with local restaurants for food discounts, and local farmers for education and job opportunities.

To ensure even lighting, equal gardening area, and enough courtyards for the habitants, rearranging of units takes part. Breaking of form to smaller pieces will enable exibility and create more possible variations.

Through the exploration of form, from the inspiration of Herman Hertsberger’s usage of form creating space, form aggregations are explored and arranged to form residential groups with courtyards.

With the continuation of the aggregation, size, and spacial variation are explored. This aggregation gives habitants a more clear and equal amount of area for per-unit gardening. Due to the orientation of the clusters not all will have an equal amount of lighting for their vegetation.

With the consideration of previous aggregations, the amount of units, and achieving equal lighting throughout the site, this variation becomes one of the nal aggregations of the site.

The grid system displays an axis of the main circulation, which connects three major nodes. These nodes comprise of two market clusters and the community center on the right.

The axis allows the nodes to be visually connected and encourages guests to navigate easily through each. These nodes encourage courtyards and since the market program invites exterior economic movement.

The orientation of the housing groups not only promotes maximum lighting for vegetation and creates safety among each. This residential organization encourages community behavior. (looking out for each other)

The market and the storage are located on the ground oor. With this proximity, storage is accessible for the market and transport unloading for residents. To promote habitants” privacy, the housing program is placed above the market and storage. Accessibility to residential units has been considered where the transition between the perimeter and the interior of the site becomes more enclosed creating privacy for the habitants.

To accommodate the guidelines of residential quantity, the accessibility to housing units is modi ed.
