MISSION

Studio Elementals’ projects are site specific and consider the connection to the urban or rural surrounding, often drawing inspiration from nature and taking existing elements as planning basis.

With our head office in Africa’s biggest and fastest growing city we are interested in the placemaking of African cities and in the creation of unique and exciting spaces. We navigate the challenges of the Nigerian economy such as inflation, non-availability of many building materials and fixtures, little automation, and the lack of skilled labor for construction. Although most high-tech solutions for manufacturing are not locally available, we still try our best to push the boundaries of architecture in West-Africa.

07

THE FORTE

Design for a Mixed-Use Industrial/Office/Hospitality Building

The logistics Headquarter is the logistic center of the clients food production and trade network in Lagos, Nigeria. It is situated on an over 10,000 m2 piece of flat, sandy land directly facing the Lagos lagoon in the South. The structure houses a warehouses, offices, a hotel, two penthouses, a restaurant, cafeteria, staff and service spaces such as kitchen, and a break room, as well as a parking garage.

With a building footprint of around 8,000m2 the project is carefully planned to house the different space programs without disadvantages to users.

Green building measures:

The project is planned as a green building and will be EDGE certified when completed.

Climate Design:

The building skin has been designed as a ventilated parametric fiber cement façade taking solar radiation and material optimization into account- both the off-cut panels and main panels’ dimensions are optimized to match each other modularly.

The vertical façade strips break up the horizontal layout of the building and create a smooth transition to the landscape in the pavement pattern and the arrangement of the planting beds. Horizontal wooden panels are provide optimized shading for the interior as well as match with the adjacent building. Green wall vines create mutual transition in between landscape and facade and enrich visual experience along the landscape.

Landscaping Concept:

As a distribution center, all product lines come together at the logistics headquarter. This defines the park layout on a conceptual level. The logic of the building‘s facade continues in the pavement strips through the park and even crosses the road. The surrounding road surfaces along the main car access is planned as a shared space. Shared spaces are pedestrian-friendly low traffic areas suitable for inclusive urban roads and plazas. Instead of curb-stones, design elements such as street furniture and trees guide the traffic.

LANDMARK BEACH RESORT

The proposed beach estate comprises of public amenities, such as a club house, a pool with changing rooms, as well as 30 guest rooms in different accommodation structures such as chalets and beach houses.

A fluid spatial concept ensures a beach view for all estate users. In addition the buildings don’t follow a strict urban grid, but are positioned in a more free flowing and organic way that is very suitable for a beach and holiday estate. Arriving visitors can be welcomes at the clubhouse reception. The clubhouse also includes a small restaurant with a sitting platform over-viewing the estate. Guest chalets are arranged close to the main pool, which is also accompanied by little cabanas for day guests. The two beach houses close to the beach front include 5 guest rooms each with a living room and kitchen on the ground floor. The beach houses also function together as one unit with a panorama sitting platform connecting the two structures and providing privacy for a private garden with pool and serene sitting areas.

PRODUCTION CAMPUS

The initial building phase consists of a production area of approximately 36 000 m2 for 200 workers with a rice mill, a potato curing facility, beans and sesame processing, French Fries production, an office, a cafeteria, changing rooms and a technical workshop.

Studio Elementals is in charge of the architectural planning decisions and landscape design. With this part of the project we are interested in introducing a wholistic and sustainable approach to the project on all levels: minimal sealed surfaces, protection of existing trees, a climatically intelligent landscape design with focus on autochthonous plants mentioned on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. Studio Elementals seeks to continue this approach dealing with required natural resources for the production, especially water, rainwater management and the handling of waste.

A Sustainable Role model for a Palm Plantation

An area of 2000 ha was assumed in an undetermined location in Edo State.

Although Nigeria was the biggest palm producer in the world in the seventies, it is currently the 5th largestpalm producer and only covers 2/3 of the local market needs, while spending 1⁄2 billion $ in imports of palm production yearly. The client is aware of the environmental and social issues around palm plantations, such as deforestation, decreasing habitat for animals and plant species, poor working conditions, etcetera. With this knowledge, the client was seeking to develop a sustainable palm plantation with a strong social impact focus.

The following program elements were considered: Palm trees- arranged in 35 ha fields with access roads around, a palm oil refinery for processing, a research lab with offices and a tree nursery, eco tourism infrastructure such as chalets and a restaurant for overnight visitors and conferences.

Strategies like the creation of high conservation value areas (HCV), high carbon stock approach (HCS), landscape heterogeneity, enhanced understory complexity and intercropping have been used as basis for the design of the role model, which can be applied to any other similar test area.

12-Story Mixed-Use Building

This 12-story proposed mixed-use building is situated on Gracefield Island in Lagos on a 3,500m2 plot along the lagoon front. It features commercial spaces such as shops, a restaurant, offices, urban farming and research facilities, a 65-room boutique hotel, apartments, and penthouse apartments. The building is set along the Lagos lagoon, which used to be a natural habitat for mangroves. This has been used as inspiration for the initial architectural concept. Transitions of green spaces through the building play an important role for the sun protection and cooling of façade surfaces.

Each terrace features a living and dining area with kitchen and staff room on the ground floor, two bedrooms and a living area on the first floor, and two bedrooms on the second floor.

Overhanging balconies and slabs provide shading for exposed windows, stairway facades are covered with façade slats for privacy and additional sun protection. Landscaped areas at the building entrances provide a privacy screen from neighboring terraces and improved views from within the living areas.
