FOOD FOR THOUGHT THOUGHT FOR FOOD In order to provide sufficient and healthy

food for all people in the world with respect for our environment, different strategies are explored to

improve food production in the future. When dealing with complex issues of this kind we need to bridge social and technical sciences as well as

science and society.

The sub-department Communication, Philosophy and Technology of Wageningen University aims for an integrated approach to both policy and

technology development, related to the future production of food.

COMMUNICATION The Strategic Communication Group studies the

dynamics and consequences of strategic communication related to life science issues.

Such studies involve both the deliberate use of communication strategies by organizations that wish to connect to certain audiences, and the everyday communication strategies that people employ to

achieve their own ends, often in response to governmental agencies, commercial companies, scientific communities, NGOs or managers in organizations.

The Strategic Communication Group is chaired by prof. Peter Feindt.

IN STRATEGIC COMMUNICATION The research of the Strategic Communication group contributes to insights in the inter-human

processes through which public images, opinions and risk perceptions come about (e.g. around new technological opportunities), the role of

persuasion and other communicative strategies in fostering individual and collective behavioral change, the interaction between planned and self-organized processes of change, and the way in which interpretative communities create, maintain and manage their viewpoints, frames and

discourses.

Peter Feindt

is Professor of Strategic Communication. He has a broad interest in the social and political aspects of agriculture, food, environment, biodiversity and public health. His research is often inter- and transdisciplinary and focuses on sustainability transitions, political communication, public participation and conflict resolution.

is associated professor Strategic Communication Strategies in Wageningen, and endowed professor Strategic Communication in Amsterdam (UvA). Her focus is on inter-human processes and communication with an emphasis on the significance of conversations and stories in change processes.

Severine van Bommel

is assistant professor and interested in the interpretive analysis of environmental problems. Theoretically she focusses on the construction of meaning in interaction, specifically in relation to knowledge production and use. Methodologically she is interested in organisational ethnography and other interpretive approaches.

Gert Jan Hiddink

is professor Nutrition Communication through Health Professionals at Strategic Communication. Keywords for his research & education: nutrition guidance by GPs and PNs, nutrition education, nutrition communication and health promotion. |

Anne Marike Lokhorst

focuses on the social psychological underpinnings of environmentally significant behaviors, and in designing interventions that tap into these underpinnings. Specifically she is interested in processes related to social influence, such as norms, commitment making and group discussions.

She does quantitative research, using multiple methods: (field) experiments, scenario studies and survey studies. |

Hedwig te Molder

is associate professor at Strategic Communication and full professor Science and Technology Communication at the University of Twente. Her research is concerned with the analysis of social interaction (discursive psychology), with a special interest in ‘expert-lay’ interaction on contested scientific and technological developments such as vaccination, genomics and nanotechnology. |

Mieke Muijres

is education coordinator and lecturer at Strategic Communication and Knowledge, Technology and Innovation. She is contact person for all students with educational questions. As lecturer, she supervises BSc-thesis projects and is involved in several courses. |

Marijn Poortvliet

is assistant professor at Strategic Communication. His research focuses on the individual psychological processes that affect risk communication. Furthermore, he is interested in how humans react to new technologies, practices, and hazards, in particular in uncertain contexts. |

Reint Jan Renes

is associate professor Health Communication. His main interest is understanding human’s motivation to process health information and their willingness to act upon it, isolating fundamental social psychological processes and testing their application to a variety of health-related behaviours.

Emely de Vet

is associate professor Health Communication. She focuses on understanding and changing health-related behaviors, such as diet and physical activity. Her work addresses the psychological processes driving unhealthy practices, but also the development and evaluation of health behavior change interventions. | |

Margit van Wessel

studies questions around communication and public and private organisations. A main interest is the role of communication in the shaping of relations between government and citizens. Another interest is that of (external and internal) organisational communication. Margit studies these themes from a primarily sociological and interpretive angle. | |

PHILOSOPHY The Philosophy Group studies ethical and

philosophical issues in relation to the Wageningen domains. The group reflects on

normative assumptions and implications of research and social practices concerning food production and consumption, public health, animal welfare and the environment, and thereby aims to contributing to

responsible practices and policies in these fields.

The Philosophy Group is chaired by prof. Marcel Verweij.

RESEARCH IN PHILOSOPHY

Our research projects focus on core concepts and principles that are often taken for granted in research, policy and practice. For example: How should we understand risk, health and safety in various policy contexts, e.g. food production and public health?

Is it possible to develop a coherent understanding of what is natural, e.g. in relation to food production, agriculture, or nature development? How to evaluate the debates on intensive versus extensive livestock farming from an ethical perspective? What are the moral limits and justifications of patent regulation in the life sciences?

Research and teaching activities involve ethical

reflection on practical problems and analysis of the role and status of scientific knowledge in our modern globalised world.

Marcel Verweij

is professor of Philosophy. He is specialised in normative analysis of ethical issues in public health. As member of the Health Council and editor of the journal Public Health Ethics he is in involved in research and policy making on, for example, health promotion, infectious disease control and resource allocation. He leads the chair group Philosophy since May 2013.

Henk van den Belt

is assistant professor in Applied Philosophy. His expertise includes science and technology studies, the ethics and politics of science and innovation, and the role of intellectual property in the life sciences.

TECHNOLOGY AND INNOVATION The Knowledge, Technology and Innovation (KTI) group studies processes of social and technical

innovation and transformation, with special

attention to the communicative and socio-political dynamics involved in the production, exchange, integration and use of scientific and other knowledge.

This involves studying technology’s impact on

society and the social shaping of technology as

two sides of a co-production process, and the analysis of interactions, interventions, design approaches and institutional set-ups relevant to enhancing and supporting innovation processes in society.

The first step in creating an improved extension service in Indonesia The Science Field Shops are a new approach in creating an improved agricultural extension service in Indonesia, using participatory learning methods to increase adaptive capacity of the smallholder farmers and increase the efficacy of the applied research by scientists. This study aims to understand how both scientists and farmers are participating in co-production of knowledge.

Effect of international and national regulations on illegal e-waste trade to and processing in Guiyu, China Guiyu in China is one of the largest illegal electronic waste processing areas in the world. This has off course major health and environmental consequences. The research focuses on the effects of international and national regulations on the local level and concludes that they sometimes even have a reverse effect. u Celine Janse van Rensburg

The System of Rice Intensification (SRI) is a rice cultivation method that uses fewer inputs and produces greater yield. SRI is promised to be an unique opportunity for small farmers to engage in a global value chain. This thesis critically investigates the opportunities and barriers for small farmers in Tripura (India) to enhance their position.

IN KNOWLEDGE, TECHNOLOGY AND INNOVATION The application of knowledge and technology in society often has a bright and a dark side, which deserves thorough scrutiny. Scientific knowledge can help solve problems, but it may also reinforce existing inequalities or trigger new tensions in social

systems.

Our research aims to reply to questions such as: How do knowledge and technology influence social relations, and vice versa? What kind of knowledge, technology and innovation do different groups in society need? What social innovations are required to redress

poverty, disease and environmental degradation? What communicative, socio-political and bio-material processes influence the uptake and scaling of technologies and ideas? And how can science become more democratic?

is professor of Knowledge, Technology and Innovation. He is interested in societal domains: agriculture, natural resource management, health and international development. His research focuses on approaches to developing effective socio-technical innovations; collaboration between different disciplines; social learning and conflict management in networks; and the functioning of innovation support systems and the role of research, extension and brokers therein.

works on political ecology and agricultural and food technology in relation to international development (with emphasis on Latin America). He studies social justice and risk perspectives.
