1969-2019 DEMOLITION SPECIALISTS 2019 is S Evans & Sons Ltd’s 50th year.

From humble beginnings as a scrap metal merchant in 1969, our founder Sam Evans and his family have built one of the UK’s best known demolition businesses.

First moving into ship breaking and heavy industrial demolition, Sam later broadened the firm’s expertise to span demolition of all kinds and across all sectors – including infrastructure, industrial, manufacturing, municipal and residential.

In the years that followed, we established long-standing relationships with local authorities, secured repeat contracts with high-profile businesses such as TATA Steel, Network Rail and the Highways Agency, and developed a strong commercial aptitude for difficult sites.

Now, with an enviable reputation in our field, particularly as a specialist in infrastructure demolition, we are proud of our history and many of our first clients are still within our client portfolio today.

More recently, we have invested heavily in safeguarding the safety and wellbeing of staff, customers and subcontractors with the launch of Think Safe Be Safe – an innovative campaign that forms the basis of the safety culture at S Evans & Sons.

As one of the longest serving members of the National Federation of Demolition Contractors (NFDC), we are committed to industry best practice and were delighted to win the 2019 World Demolition Award for Explosive Demolition for our work with British Steel in Scunthorpe – the perfect recognition in our 50th year.

OUR TEAM & EQUIPMENT. Our demolition team comprises highly-trained, experienced, qualified, and well-equipped professionals with extensive demolition expertise.

We work closely with the National Demolition Training Group (NDTG) to provide a continual programme of skills development and ensure that our team’s competence exceeds industry standards.

All our operators hold CCDO cards as a minimum, and many hold other specialist qualifications such as IPAF, PTS and CPCS in addition.

Clients often comment on our team’s ability to work quickly, safely and with tenacity whatever the task, and we firmly believe it is our commitment to our people that sets us apart from the competition.

As well as regularly investing in training, we also know the importance of providing the best tools, plant equipment and machinery.

That’s why we have made a seven-figure investment in new demolition plant equipment, including 7 to 90 tonne excavators and 50 tonne mobile crushers, as well as sheers, breakers, selector grabs, pulverisers and buckets, ranging from 1 to 12 tonnes.

We also own and operate a fleet with capacity from 32 to 150 tonnes, which includes tipper wagons, low loaders, forklift trucks, vans and pick-ups.

Led by our dedicated in-house health and safety officers, we audit our integrated management system, safety performance and demolition sites on a regular basis and have created a culture where positive health and safety behaviours are second nature to our team.

We achieve this through continually monitoring our environmental performance and compliance with our Environmental Management System (EMS), which is registered to ISO 14001.

Our innovative Think Safe Be Safe campaign works in tandem with the hazard card system and encourages employees and the supply chain to report concerns, share best practice and foster responsible attitudes in the workplace.

Case Study

BRITISH STEEL Scunthorpe EXPLOSIVE DEMOLITION The team safely dismantled, decommissioned and demolished Dawes Lane Coke Ovens for British Steel in Scunthorpe without any disruption to a fully-operational site.

Two 300 tonne mobile cranes were required to dismantle the 65m high coal hopper and adjoining conveyor system. Particular attention was given to the conveyor system, which was being retained for the client’s future use and was attached to live plant throughout the works.

Once the conveyor sections were dismantled, S Evans & Son’s structural and explosive engineers carried out detailed analysis of the coal hopper ready for its demolition using two separate blow-downs. A design and cutting sequence was created and highly trained and experienced top-men burners prepared and preweakened the structure to ready it for the explosives.

On the day of the blow-down, British Steel staff and neighbouring businesses were evacuated within a 500m radius which involved the movement of more than 200 people and the assistance of the local Police and Humberside Fire and Rescue.

Crewe DEMOLITION AND SITE CLEARANCE Clearance of the former Bombardier site in Crewe required S Evans & Sons’ demolition expertise in order to make way for Countryside Properties to build 263 new homes.

The brief was to clear the site fully, removing 17 acres of buildings down to slab level including the West Street wall which was 250 metres and 12 metres high. A full monoflex scaffolding structure was erected to tackle this part of the project, which used a combination of hand and mechanical demolition to avoid the wall falling onto a busy road which neighboured the site.

7 to 60 tonne excavators with grab breakers and shears were used to complete the work. The team also paid special attention to minimising site waste and reclaimed as many of the site materials as possible – including more than one million bricks, 20,000 slates and 10 tonnes of timber.

What Study Case we do

HOCHTIEF, HIGHBURY CORNER London CHRISTMAS DAY DEMOLITION Two bridges spanning underground and overround railway lines in central London were safely demolished on Christmas Day 2017, thanks to the expertise of our team.

Using four 50ft excavators in tandem, the team worked day and night on alternating shifts to compete the work on time and without damage to the Network Rail’s infrastructure.

The project was not without its challenges, which included just 24 hours to complete the work and the need to navigate heavy plant and equipment into central London, as well as to remove more than two thousand tonnes of demolition arisings one the work was complete. The high-profile project was delivered on time and without accident or injury.

FLYOVERS Liverpool, City Centre COMPLEX CITY-CENTRE DEMOLITION When Liverpool City Council’s inspection of two 50-year old flyovers found they were structurally unsound – the S Evans & Sons team was called on to plan a highly-complex and sensitive demolition within a busy city centre environment.

At 240 metres in length, each flyover consisted of ten spans which had been cast and post-tensioned in situ. Thanks to the team’s specialist expertise and careful planning, individual spans of the flyovers, each weighing 400-550 tonnes, were removed in a pre-determined sequence using various techniques with full consideration to the local surroundings.

Firstly, the adjoining footbridge was demolished using traditional techniques to pave the way for the removal of the main structure.

Twelve of the flyovers’ spans were removed by wire saw cutting in situ, supported by selfpropelled modular transporter (SPMTs). Once free, the spans were transported at height to a jacking bay, before being carefully lowered onto a bespoke grillage system for further processing and eventual lifting in 40-70 tonne sections.

A bespoke temporary works scheme was designed and installed, which included propping to mitigate the risk of premature collapse due to the unknown condition of post tensioning within the structure.

A clamping system was also designed and installed on each supporting column to counteract the structures’ ability to move during the removal process.

FLYOVERS Liverpool - Continued Bridging three of the city centre’s busiest roads Hunter Street, Byrom Street & Dale Street - special consideration was given to minimise disruption to motorists throughout, as well as to the wide array of neighbours, including Liverpool John Moore’s University, nearby galleries and Grade II listed building, the Liverpool World Museum.

Major road closures and 24 hour working were put in place to meet the city’s needs.

As a result of Onsite Trail’s work, our engineers plotted an adapted method to safely demolish the remaining eight sections using mechanical methods over a weekend closure. This ensured that the residents of Liverpool could freely use the local road network without disruption during the busy month of December.

Materials from the flyovers have been recycled at a native site to be used on other city centre schemes.

Case Study

NORTHERN HUB Manchester MAJOR RAIL UPGRADES As part of Network Rail’s £1bn rail upgrade in the North of England, we were tasked with clearing a number of Manchester city centre sites to make way for faster and more frequent rail services.

The team demolished multiple warehouses, buildings and structures to the north of Piccadilly Station, which included licensed asbestos removal, rail bridge demolition using high-reach machinery, the removal of a steel bridge over water using 100 tonne lifts, managing listed structure protections and abutment demolition. In addition, the site was fully remediated and all materials were recycled and processed on site.

Careful planning and consideration underpinned this project, which was carried out in a busy city environment and adjacent to active construction sites, live rail infrastructure, main carriageways, commercial businesses and a residential area. We worked closely with Skanska BAM throughout this two-year project.

HANSON CEMENT Clitheroe FACTORY PLANT DEMOLITION Demolition of Hanson Cement’s redundant heavy plant machinery at the Ribblesdale Cement Works in Clitheroe, required an exacting approach from our team.

With machinery reaching a height of more than 40 meters, the project required extensive planning and called on techniques such as hot works, mechanical high-reach demolition, heavy crane lifts and critical working-at-height safety monitoring.

The project was carried out safely, efficiently and ahead of schedule. Our experience in this field shone through and we have been recommended for work at other Hanson Cement plants.

Case Study

UNIFRAX Widnes EMERGENCY FIRE-DAMAGED BUILDING DEMOLITION When a large brick and steel framed building with a fibreglass roof caught fire in Widnes, we were on site quickly to assist the Fire Brigade, begin the removal of fire damaged waste, support the fire investigation team and plan for the required demolition.

While the team was busy with the early stages of site clean-up, the project management team compiled a detailed plan including 3D CAD sequencing of how to demolish the structure, building slab and adjoining building in a safe and economical manner. Special consideration was also given to high-value plant equipment located beneath the building, which had to be protected throughout the works.

Using specialist high-reach demolition machinery, an experienced team and technical hot works, the building was safely and methodically demolished, processed and removed from site for recycling.

Much of the building’s ducting was safely dismantled and protected ready for re-use. The team was also commissioned to grub up and expose the foundations ready to make way for the new building.

This highly technical project was carried out with care, precision and zero accidents, which resulted in a highly satisfied client.

LIME ST EMERGENCY WORKS Liverpool City Centre EMERGENCY WORKS WALL COLLAPSE AND SITE CLEARANCE In less than 24 hours, our emergency response team made a collapsed track-side wall safe and saw train services reinstated at Liverpool Lime Street station.

The wall caused significant disruption to rail services in and out of Liverpool when it collapsed.

From receiving the initial call at 11:30 am, we designed and delivered a method statement which enabled a team of people and plant equipment to clear the site, shore up the remaining wall and hand the site back to the client by 7am the following day.

Despite the challenges of restricted access and tight timescales, we were able to minimise disruption for Liverpool Lime Street’s railway operators and the 55,000 passengers that use it every day.

Naas, Ireland BRIDGE DEMOLITION Demolishing a bridge over Ireland’s busiest road as part of a motorway upgrade, required exacting attention to detail and careful planning from the S Evans & Sons team.

Using ten demolition specification excavators working in tandem, the Osberstown Bridge deck, abutment walls and piers over the M7 were demolished in just 24 hours and 36 hours ahead of schedule.

Eight wheel tipper wagons collected the concrete arisings and took them to an off-site compound ready for crushing to type 6f2 during normal working hours. Finally, a street sweeper cleared the remaining debris from the carriageway, before the motorway reopened.

Completed to the highest professional standards, the project was delivered safely and with minimal disruption to the 80,000 cars that use M7 between Limerick and Dublin each day.

FILTON BANK PACKAGE/

STAPLETON VIADUCT Bristol MAJOR RAIL UPGRADE Replacement of the Stapleton Road viaduct, the last of its kind in the UK and the work of engineer Brunel, formed a crucial part of a project to double the number of railway lines between Bristol Temple Meads and Filton Abbey Wood station.

Working for Taylor Woodrow and Vinci, we managed the demolition of the bridge and clearance of the site over a two-week period. Using a variety of demolition specification machinery in tandem, the team brought the large structure down in a safe and efficient manner and worked around the clock to clear hundreds of tonnes of steel, brick, concrete and timber from the site. Work was completed ahead of schedule.

This project was one of numerous demolition projects we managed in the Bristol area, including works on the Filton Bank Upgrade Scheme and Narroways Hill’s footbridges and abutments.

What Study Case we do

TEA POT LANE M20 FOOT BRIDGE DEMOLITION The removal of the Teapot Lane footbridge was an integral part of the M20 Smart Motorway Upgrade program and, thanks to our team, was completed within a restricted time frame and with minimal disruption for motorists.

The work required numerous complex lifts using a 450 tonne crane and specialist concrete cutting, as well as mechanical demolition techniques to reduce sensitive parts of the structure and the use of dust suppression systems. A temporary works design was issued for each stage of the demolition, which also required particular elements of the structures to remain intact ready for reuse when building the new bridge.

A50 A50 ROAD BRIDGE DEMOLITION Demolition of the 25ft high single carriageway A522 bridge, which crossed the A50, was safely carried out within a weekend closure by our team.

Due to the bridge’s construction, a temporary works design was developed to mitigate the risk of any premature collapse, prevent damage to the carriageway and ensure the safety of the onsite team. Scaled CAD drawings were produced to allow careful demolition sequencing.

Once the bridge deck was demolished using 45 tonne and 50 tonne demolition specification excavators, the arisings were cleared away to allow the central support and side walls to be demolished. Dust suppression was used throughout and hardwood timber matting was installed for road protection. Once complete, the embankments were graded to leave the site in a safe and clear manner.
