NEED TO KNOW BEFORE CHOSING YOUR PROGRAM 1 Before you make a decision What you need to know before you decide on a volunteer project: • All programs are real! This means, that also the fates and the living conditions of the locals are. Please be aware of, how sensitive you are to these social unspoken topics and more important if you can handle these situations once you are in a different environment. • Some of the projects are located in remote places, mostly hours from a bigger city. But it will not be as lonely as you might think. If you are sociable and take the initiative

2

Before you get to know the project, get to know yourself! Think thoroughly, what motivation you bring on your trip, how much power and strength you have, what you want to accomplish and how much you want to be involved in the voluntary work. After this start looking for the project, which is consistent with your goals. We also provide you assistance finding the most suitable project. If you are not sure, please do not hesitate to give us a call. Over the years we got to know many volunteers and we have developed a good knowledge of who is suitable for which project. We will be happy to help you make the right decision. Tip: Do not just settle for one particular project. It is already enough to know in which country you would like to go and in what field of social work you would like to engage yourself.

3

to talk to people, you will easily make friends. • Take your time! Being a volunteer means to not rush through daily life. You will need

some voluntary works, you should keep in mind that this does not give you enough time to make remarkable changes.

Costs of living • Voluntary work is without any financial compensation! • What budget did you set for yourself during your travels? • Shortly list all the costs, which you might occur during your travels. We regularly try to update our list of worldwide cost of livings. • How much time do I want to spend on voluntary work and how much on leisure time? Your expenses will adjust to your desired lifestyle. • Check out our tips for financing! You might find a few ideas, which you have not thought of yet, on how to finance your travels.

4

Your program confirmation

After your registration you will directly be contacted by your future local program coordinator by email. In some cases there will also be a skype interview. Below you will find all important information. Our tip: use the following points as a checklist for your interview with your program coordinator or check, if you have been informed sufficiently by email and information sheets about all listed points. Eligibility for the project | Time of arrival | Starting date of the program | Do’s and Dont’s | Accommodation | Transportation abroad | Visa | Vaccinations and insurance | Medical care abroad | Fellow travelers

SGA 2018 VOLUNTEER ABROAD

5 Book your flight Flight booking Only after your program coordinator has been in contact with you and approved your arrival date, you should book your flight. The reasons for this are pointed out in section 3. All volunteer projects are coordinated by our local program coordinators and not by our customer service. So please be certain all is approved before you book your flight. You want to avoid having to wait one week for your project to start due to national or school holidays, don´t you? Confirmation Please send your flight details directly after your booking to Studentsgoabroad.org and/or to your local program coordinator, so we can arrange your airport pick-up and arrange the accommodation for you.

8 Changing your project It may be that your project does not meet your expectations and you would like to help even more. Show your commitment and talk with someone from the project or with our coordinator about your satisfaction in your program. A lot of times you have the possibility to help in additional project or even change projects, if you have plausible reasons. After you return home, we cannot change the situation anymore and there is hardly a chance of refunding.

9 Extending the project/ stay Commited volunteers are welcome to extend their project. Please consult your local program coordinator for this, as he knows the capacity of the projects and accommodation and can plan you in accordingly

7 Change of accommodation Even though our program coordinators try to inform you well enough our types of accommodation, your expectations might not be met and you are not content with it. Our tip: Before you decide to move by yourself, get in touch with the coordinator and talk about possible other accommodations. Volunteers, who decide to move independently, need to cover the additional costs by themselves.

Overall, it was always great to talk to the people who were very friendly and open. I was able to learn a lot about working in the hospital in Ghana, but people also told me about their culture and their lives. There were no problems with the language as everyone in Ghana speaks English. Generally, your activities include homework support and games, singing, dancing and handicraft work. Also, some work in the kitchen and at

VISION AND GOALS The organization was founded in 2008 with the overall goal of improving the quality of life of children and other community members living in very vulnerable conditions in Namibia’s townships. In 2011, the first building of the organization was built in Otjomuise, a township northwest of Windhoek. Here the children get nutritious meals, adequate daily care and they receive education. In 2014, the center has been expanded with two more classrooms - providing more children with care and participation in English, Computer or Physical Education classes. At the end of 2017, further funding initiatives will be used to finance further expansion of the center.

All those activities and programs will boost the townships. You can engage in all of the initiative’s current programs and also learn how a non-profit organization is run.

Surf project This project in Muizenberg is run under the motto: “the way out”. The means of implementation: surfing! Sport helps children in the townships to look at life from a much friendlier perspective. What is more is that they can build a healthy relationship with the ocean and find new hope and inspiration. Your task is to learn a

bit of surfing and then support the team during the surf lessons. Anyhow, this activity includes more than just the surf itself: You must help with the preparation of the equipment, warm up the children in the water and also clean the equipment after the surf. At the office you’ll be involved in social media marketing, fundraising activities, and special events with kids, like beach clean-ups or small competitions.

Penguin Conservation Program In this South African penguin conservation project, you will work side by side with experienced animal keepers in a veterinary and rehabilitation center, assisting with the rescue and care of seabirds in the area. The work with the animals is very “hands-on”. You will learn how to safely catch, hold and feed injured or endangered birds. Moreover, you are responsible for the preparation of the food and the cleaning of the enclosure. It is also your task to keep the pool and the mats clean and you will learn how to sterilize the food syringes. These tasks are relatively simple and you will quickly develop a routine.

Cheetah project Here you work in a game reserve where seven cheetahs and other species of wildcats take refuge. Visitors to the park are made aware of the plight of the endangered species and a consciousness to protect the wildcats is created. During this program, you will get to know the entire daily routine of the reserve - from cleaning the grounds and feeding the animals to guiding guests to the closure of the park in the evenings.

It has shaped me as a person very much and I realized once again that we are doing very well in Germany. Some of the kids live in townships and life is far from easy there. There is a lot of poverty and everyday life is dominated by crime. Therefore, I hope that I could contribute to bring more sun and happiness to the difficult life of the children. However, when the first child came through the door and asked me what my name was and said that she was glad to meet a new person, I started to feel comfortable and enjoyed the first lesson. I became accustomed to the everyday life of the school and learned the new teaching methods quickly. Also, I quickly internalized the Montessori concept

As a volunteer you will be active in the care of these animals, but also participate in dog training. Several schools in these regions offer public workshops where the children are shown how to treat animals in a way that is appropriate. It is important to know how the problem can be solved in the long term. Again, you will accompany and support the team. This project is particularly interesting for prospective veterinarians or biology students as it is an enriching practical experience. Reef Restauration In addition to targeted fish farming, monitoring harmful, invasive fish species is part of restoring and maintaining a healthy ecosystem. The lionfish is one of the species whose increasing existence is a major threat to the coral reefs. As they feed on smaller fish and crabs that are important to the coral reef ecosystem, their stock needs to be controlled. Even without any diving experience, you can support the team of researchers in their daily tasks. In addition to various diving courses, you will learn

which scientific approaches are behind the restoration work on the reef and what tasks it requires of the team. The program is set to 12 weeks. All in all, this project is a very special experience for future researchers or those who would like to work for the marine conservation.

Environmental Conservation This program includes various activities that promote eco-friendly and sustainable tourism. A key activity here is the educational work of the local population, hotels and landowners. One of your tasks is to plan and carry out campaigns together with the team. Please note that advanced Spanish skills are a must in order to participate in this program because you will communicate with the locals quite a lot.

RECYLING PROJECT IN SAMANA’S SCHOOLS Rubbish in Samaná is a major problem. Unfortunately, this is pretty easy to notice when you spend some time in the city. Four of the volunteers have started a new project together to find a solution to this problem. As they determine the future of Samaná, the children in particular became a target group of this project. Speeches about the consequences of the rubbish and about recycling were held in the schools. This should sensitize the children. Afterwards, a game was played so that the children could learn how recycling works. Also, they did several craft activities which showed them how empty toilet paper rolls and bottles can be reused. Eventually, the rubbish on the beaches was cleared away.

PROJECT LOCATION SINGBURI
