Good gawd, is it really April already?

Yep it is, time flies when you’re having fun right? Chances are, if you’re reading this; you still haven’t sorted yourself out a house for next year.

But fear not, dear student friend, the trusty Student Housing Guide (rebooted) is still here to help.

It is pretty stressful when it seems everyone else sorted themselves out ages ago, but chill out; there’s still plenty of homes to go round.

In fact, Sheffield actually has a surplus of student housing so don’t worry yourself, there’s still properties available.

The site of a renowned former nightclub in Sheffield is soon set to open its doors to hundreds of students in the heart of the city centre.

Gatecrasher Apartments will be a top quality accommodation for more than 240 students and is to open in September on the location of the famous former Gatecrasher nightclub at the corner of Arundel Street and Matilda Street.

Communal features include a gym, cinema room, a lounge and an internal courtyard landscaped as a record turntable to reflect the previous use of the land, which is on the doorstep of Sheffield Hallam University.

The nightclub was totally destroyed by fire in June 2007. Soon to be a six-storey complex providing two, three, four and five bedroom apartments, all en-suite with a good sized living space, fully equipped kitchen including dish washer, along with 90 one-bed studios each with a kitchen including full-size oven & appliances, breakfast bar, large fitted wardrobe, settee, double bed and wall mounted 40 inch Smart TV & includes 50GB broadband.

The £11 million Gatecrasher complex will also have leisure and retail at ground level, a ‘green’ environmentally-friendly roof and be part of the Community Heat and Power scheme that is linked to the Bernard Road incinerator.

Gatecrasher Apartments will be part of the West One Student accommodation portfolio that already embraces student flats in the award-winning Sellers Wheel in Arundel Street, Huttons Buildings in West Street and at Broomgrove Apartments on Broomgrove Road, as well as the West One development in Fitzwilliam Street.

Prices for the apartments from £110 with the studios from £135 per person per week including bills Now letting from plan with tenancies starting 1st Sept 2016 for either 10, 11 or 12 months. A show apartment is due to open from July 1.

PLAY A GAME Board games aren’t just monopoly and scrabble.

Nowadays, there are loads of games that are bloody hilarious. Popular game at the moment is ‘Cards Against Humanity’, described as ‘a party game for horrible people’. The aim of the game is to fill in the blanks with mature content phrases, hoping to achieve the most offensive statement. Gather your housemates and a couple of bevvies and find out who’s the most horrible.

THROW A HOUSE PARTY No money to go out? No problem. Save yourself the hassle of paying club entry by rustling up as many inventive cocktails as you like with your leftover booze in the cupboard, rather than paying £9 a pop. Plus no queuing for the bar, a taxi, the loo or being squashed in the smoking area. Winning.

CHECK YOUR CITY’S OFFICIAL WEBSITE Sounds a little boring, but checking your city’s website is a great way to find out what’s going on. There are often tons of free events at the weekend that you can call by, such as fashion fairs and food and drink festivals.

G is for green space.

A third of the city lies in the Peak District, the only UK city to include a national park within its boundary.

H is for Henderson’s Relish.

The Spicy Yorkshire Sauce, made in Sheffield since the 1880s. Sheffield folk are fiercely proud of the product – as displayed when Labour MP Jim Dowd unwittingly suggested the sauce was an imitation of Lea & Perrins, leading to a swift retracting and apology to the people of Sheffield.

I is for Independent.

The indie scene in the city has thrived over the last decade or so; home-grown shops, cafés and bars are in abundance around the city centre, with many more to be found on Abbeydale Road and Ecclesall Road respectively.

A is for Ale. You, dear student, have arrived in the ale capital of the UK. Yes, it’s all hail the ale around Sheffield – just ask the New York Times, who listed Kelham Island, the popular real ale area of the city, above The Vatican in the publication’s ‘52 places to go in 2014’ feature- impressive.

B is for Bessemer.

The chap responsible for Sheffield’s worldwide reputation as a manufacturing city. In 1856 Henry Bessemer invented the Bessemer process – a method of converting iron into steel – which saw steel production soar to an output of 10,000 tonnes a week by the 1880s.

C is for Crucible.

The home of world snooker since 1977, the Crucible Theatre brings tens of thousands of visitors to the city each year, many of which arriving between April and May to soak up the snooker-loopy atmosphere.

D is for Division Street.

Situated in the heart of the Devonshire quarter, this lively street boasts a mix of small independent shops, bars, pubs and restaurants.

J is for Joe and Jarv.

Two legendary Cockers hail from this city: The late Joe Cocker (RIP) and PULP lead singer Jarvis Cocker.

K is for knives.

Aye, Sheffield built up quite the international repute for quality cutlery making, going all the way back to the 14th century when Geoffrey Chaucer referenced a Sheffield ‘Thwitel’ (knife) in The Canterbury Tales.

L is for the Leadmill.

This venue is known throughout the UK for its championing of live music. None other than Ringo Starr wrote to the owners in 1992 to thank them for the support offered to young musicians, while Franz Ferdinand have described playing the venue as a ‘rite of passage for UK bands worth their salt’.

M is for Moonshine.

Brewed locally by Abbyedale Brewery, Moonshine is an award-winning 4.3% beer available at most selfrespecting ale joints .

N is for niche.

The ‘new wave’ era of the 1980s was born in Sheffield, with the likes of Cabaret Voltaire, Human League, Heaven 17 and ABC all hailing from the Steel City.

Never mind guitar bands, this city was bouncing to the sound of bassline during the early to mid-noughties. The infamous Niche nightclub gave birth to Sheffield’s own interpretation of the genre and the likes of Jamie Duggan, DJ Q and Shaun ‘Banger’ Scott would often grace the decks before the venues closure in 2005.

F is for football.

O is for Olympians.

As the home of Sheffield FC, the world’s oldest association football club; Hallam FC’s Sandygate, the world’s oldest football ground; and Bramall Lane, the world’s oldest professional football stadium.

Gold medallist Jessica Ennis-Hill hails from Sheffield, and IAAF president Seb Coe found his knack for Track & Field while attending high school there.

E is for electronic music.

P is for Park Hill Flats.

U is for Uke.

Built between 1957 and 1961, this Grade II listed building – the largest of its kind in Europe. The 1,000-flat structure, built to rehouse the local community from a back-toback housing slum, was originally seen as a success and a beacon of community spirit; however as local industry suffered, unemployment rose and crime and drugs became rife on the estate, Park Hill swiftly became a ‘no go area’.

Yup, Sheffield have their very own ukulele-toting Sheffield cover band, The Everly Pregnant Brothers.

V is for Varsity.

Beginning back in 1997, the Sheffield Varsity tournament Hallam University and University of Sheffield is one of the biggest of its kind in the country. With 1,500 students playing 35 sports in 20 different locations, it’s bloody huge and there’s plenty of pride at stake for both sides.

Q is for quarters.

W is for Warp.

Since 1994 the city centre has been divided into 11 quarters – Kelham Island Quarter, Riverside, Castlegate, Sheaf Valley, Cultural Industries Quarter, The Moor Quarter, Devonshire Quarter, St Georges Quarter, St Vincent Quarter, Cathedral Quarter and Heart of the City.

Warp Records was founded here in 1989, and went on to become one of the most influential labels in electronic music. Warp Films has produced the likes of Dead Man’s Shoes, This Is England and Four Lions, among many other highly rated British films.

R is for Republic.

X is for Xylophone.

During the 1980s the left-wing policies of the Sheffield Council led by David Blunkett – many made deliberately to show opposition to Margaret Thatcher’s government of the day – earnt the city the title of ‘The People’s Republic of South Yorkshire’.

The earliest known example of a modern Xylophone was discovered, dug up decades ago when workers were fitting the first tram tracks in front of the Cathedral. Nah, not really, but you try coming up with something for X. Go on…

S is for Stones.

Y is for Yellow Arch Studios.

In 1868 William Stones purchased the famous Cannon Brewery on Rutland Road, Neepsend, and worked brewing beer for the good folk of Sheffield until his death in 1894. William Stones LTD started brewing Stones Bitter in 1948, which quickly became a huge hit with the steelworkers of the city.

Today the UK’s first fully-licensed recording studios, this recently refurbed venue in Neepsend has provided rehearsal space to some of the city’s finest musical exports, with the likes of Arctic Monkeys, Tony Christie, Richard Hawley and Bring Me The Horizon all treading the boards there.

T is for Tramlines.

Z is for Zambian Sister City.

Sheffield’s very own Glasto! The first festival in 2009 attracted 35,000 visitors with the likes of Toddla T, Reverend & The Makers, The XX and Example on the bill.

Since then the event has gone from strength to strength, swiftly becoming a Sheffield institution and attracting hundreds of thousands of festival-goers.

Sheffield has a friendship agreement with Kitwe, the second largest city in Zambia, known for its mining heritage. So… well… now you know.

9 difficult housemate types and how to deal with them It’s been a few weeks since you moved in, and after a few exciting nights out you’re pretty certain you’re all going to be best friends forever. Pretty soon, you’ll take off the Jäger-tinted glasses and discover a whole other level of annoying housemate you didn’t even know existed before. Difficult housemates come in all forms, each possessing a different set of annoying characteristics. To help you with your plight, we’ve categorised all the different types of annoying housemate and how to deal with them effectively.

1) THE SLOB Probably the most complained about variety of annoying housemate. It’s only two weeks in, their dishes have grown mould and take up that much room in the sink you can’t even wash your own. The flat smells but they’re too busy to care as they’re scoffing last night’s takeaway playing Xbox in their pants.

How to deal with them: The best way to get through to ‘the slob’ is to publicly shame them. Put together a cleaning rota to make it clear who isn’t pulling their weight. Failing that – nag them.

2) THE THIEF You’ve just splashed your cash on a jumbo-pack of Walkers crisps, go to grab a bag, and what’s this? No cheese and onion left. Travesty. Someone’s been at your goods and it’s not cool. Then you realise your pasta disappearing, your milk’s empty already. All the mischievous workings of ‘The Thief’.

How to deal with them: Accusing someone of being a thief can be pretty delicate territory, so tact is key. Gather all your housemates and casually mention you’ve noticed your stuff going missing, that way it seems less of an intervention.

If they’re a decent human-being, the stealing should stop. If not, keep your stuff in your room.

3) THE PASSIVEAGGRESSIVE They’re usually all smiles at the beginning of your tenancy. Hey, they even do loads of washing up and usually clean the bathroom. However before you know it they’re leaving angry messages on the house Whatsapp group, and those dirty

6) THE LOVER Your housemate is proper sound, but unfortunately they come with extra baggage: a boyfriend or girlfriend. You might like their other half, but having an unplanned extra housemate can be a bit irritating. Especially when they’re helping themselves to your pack of Rich Tea, using your shampoo, and you’re 90% sure they got jiggy in the kitchen last night.

How to deal with them: Dealing with people’s partners is a tricky one, but you never signed up to live with them. Suggest they chip in for weekly essentials, water bills or lending a hand tidying up.

7) THE GHOST Or, The Invisible Man. You saw ‘The Ghost’ once during the first week you moved in, but haven’t heard a peep from them since. It could be a significant other, demanding course, or they go home all the time. Who knows?

How to deal with them: No dealing needed! Just be grateful they pay rent and don’t nick your food.

How to deal with them: We all come from different walks of life, and what may seem like nothing to some is a big deal to others. ‘The Passive-Aggressive ‘often leaves issues until they get to boiling point before exploding, so chances are you’ve been irritating them for some time. Try being more considerate, find out what’s irritating them and try to help.

4) THE PRETENTIOUS BELLEND Usually southern, usually wealthy, usually just come back from a ‘gap yarrrrr’.

Although ‘The Pretentious Bellend’ is more commonly found at your Russell Group universities, they lurk in your polytechnics too. They’ve never had a job, but insist on belittling your money troubles. Sigh.

How to deal with them: Don’t be scared to explain to them that the rest of you can’t afford to have the heating on all day,

or to leave the landing light on 24/7. ‘The Pretentious Bellend’ isn’t a bad person, just ignorant.

5) THE PARTY PERSON ‘The Party Person’ is the one who really hasn’t got their life together at all. They haven’t attended a lecture all term, they make the house smell of smoke and booze and you’ll often find them ringing you at 4am because they need money to pay for a taxi. Their frivolous lifestyle leaves them skint, resulting in you buying them drinks on nights out and covering them for bills. Not cool.

How to deal with them: Be irritatingly upbeat when they’re monging on the sofa recovering from yet another sesh. Work on your assignments and constantly talk about your job or uni to remind them that whilst they’re ruining their life, you’re getting on with yours. Hey, even go really hard-arse and threaten to ring their mum.

Works a charm.

8) THE SELFPROCLAIMED DJ It’s 4am, you’ve got a 9am lecture in the morning, and ‘The Self-Proclaimed DJ’ won’t stop blasting out drum’n’bass next door. It’s understandably irritating, and can be a real pain during exam periods.

How to deal with them: If you can’t just come out and confront them, try an approach with a little more tact. Loudly proclaiming “I’m going to bed now” can really make a difference. Failing that, it’s a pair of headphones for Christmas.

9) THE SEXER Awkward one. ‘The Sexer’ is the flatmate who often brings home strangers from nights out and then proceeds to fill your head with awkward thoughts from the sounds going off in the next room.

How to deal with them: Try a playful but serious next day conversation; “Hey, sounded like you were having fun last night, but ya know, can you keep it down a bit?” Or, next time your flatmate is getting it on, make your own sex-noises and try and drown them out. It will be really off-putting.

10 Things To Make You Smarter Read a variety of news sources

It’s to no surprise that all varieties of news publications have some kind of bias involved in them, and can often be very persuasive and influence your opinions. In terms of politics, different newspapers have their own political stance and agenda, so it can be difficult to form your own opinion on matters when only ingesting information from one. Try reading news from a variety of sources; this will help you form your own opinion on matters.

Having a bit of alone time with your thoughts is always a good thing. It works similarly to having a nap, except you can do it anytime anywhere. Modern day life is full of bustle and distractions, so sometimes we forget to have a time-out and actually spend some thinking time.

It’ll help your brain to relax and improve its creative thinking and problem-solving.

Question everything you read, yes, everything Following that, make sure you question everything you read. Finding new information is exciting, but make sure you always check the source. Who wrote it? Who published it? Are they stating opinions or facts? The more you question things, the more you’ll know.

Watch documentaries Documentaries don’t have to be boring. There are documentaries about pretty much everything that are engaging and informative. Netflix have a huge range of critically-acclaimed documentaries, including many of Louis Theroux’s documentary series’. Watching documentaries on sites such as 4OD and BBC iPlayer is also helpful, as they cover a range of current social issues that are likely more regional than that on Netflix.

Follow inspiring people on social media We’re probably all guilty of spending more time on social media than we perhaps should. But, just because we’re spending a lot of time browsing Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and YouTube doesn’t mean it has to be a waste of time. Try following a range of people you find inspiring; it could be people in the media, informative YouTube channels, or trivia-style Twitter accounts. Receiving information in an engaging way means you’re more likely to retain it, hurrah!

Play more board games Board games seem to have gone a bit out of style, but anything that uses creative thinking, puzzle solving, and uses parts of your brain you may neglect on a day-to-day basis is certainly helpful in improving brain power. They’re also pretty fun! Meaning you can have a good time while increasing your intelligence.

Make practical goals Everyone gets stressed sometimes. It’s a natural part of life. Most of our stress comes from worrying about pressures, whether that is work or studying. Many of us are guilty of putting things off and then rushing to get them finished; especially where assignments are involved. Instead of doing this or feeling intimidated by the word count, calculate how many words you need to do each day until deadline. You’ll actually find it’s a very small amount. Try and stick to it best you can and your stress-levels will be drastically reduced.

Listen to more music There is quite a bit of science behind the benefits of listening to music to improve intelligence. The enjoyment of music elicits dopamine release, which increases enjoyment and motivation. Enjoyment and motivation is implicated in learning and memory; making the ability to retain information a lot easier.

Meaning, listening to music whilst studying or writing essays can be really helpful, whether it’s assisting in the retention of information or to keep you motivated through heavy loads of writing.

Drink more water Obviously drinking water has a ton of health benefits, but a lot of them are actually beneficial to making you smarter. Consider taking a water bottle to your next exam, as water hydrates the brain, is a method for easing anxiety and aids concentration. In a study presented at the British Psychological Society meeting, undergrads that brought water with them to exams outperformed those who didn’t.

Give yourself downtime Don’t overwork yourself. Being constantly tired will result in burning out, and everyone needs time to themselves in order to relax. Do something you enjoy, and take the time to relax.
